Digital archiving technology for conserving cultural heritage is an important subject nowadays. The Taiwanese Ministry of Culture continues to try to converge the concept and technology of conservation towards international conventions. However, the products from these different technologies are not yet integrated due to the lack of research and development in this field. There is currently no effective schema in HBIM for Taiwanese cultural heritage. The aim of this research is to establish an HBIM schema for Chinese built heritage in Taiwan. The proposed method starts from the perspective of the components of built heritage buildings, up to the investigation of the important properties of the components through important international charters and Taiwanese laws of cultural heritage conservation. Afterwards, object-oriented class diagram and ontology from the scale of components were defined to clarify the concept and increase the interoperability. A historical database was then established for the historical information of components and to bring it into the concept of BIM in order to build a 3D model of heritage objects which can be used for visualization. An integration platform was developed for the users to browse and manipulate the database and 3D model simultaneously. In addition, this research also evaluated the feasibility of this method using the study case at the Huangxi academy located in Taiwan. The conclusion showed that class diagram could help the establishment of database and even its application for different Chinese built heritage objects. The establishment of ontology helped to convey knowledge and increase interoperability. Data from P-waves and from S-waves generated by P-S conversion on reflection from airgun shots recorded along four lines of ocean bottom seismometers were used to construct 2-D velocity sections near the Yuan-An Ridge, off southwest Taiwan. The locations of the ocean bottom seismometers were determined to high accuracy by an inversion based on the shot traveltimes. Traveltime inversion and forward modeling of multicomponent wide-angle seismic data result in detailed P-wave (Vp) and S-wave (Vs) velocities of hydrate-bearing sediment layers. The inversion indicates a relatively high P-wave velocity beneath topographic ridges which represent a series of thrust-cored anticlines develop in the accretionary wedge. S-wave velocities of the sediments over the entire section, down to 400m below seafloor, range from 320 to 570ms−1. We suggested the lateral variation in Vp/Vs profiles in the hydrate-affected zones may be related to the migration conduit of gas-rich fluid and a characteristic of hydrate content. We model Vp using equations based on a modification of Wood's equation to estimate the gas hydrate saturation. The hydrate saturation varies from 5% at the top ~200m below the seafloor to 10-15% of pore space close to the bottom simulating reflector (BSR) in the survey area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of high-risk sexual behaviours and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and associated risk factors in Taiwanese high school students. Students in grades 10 and 11 (mean age: 15.9 ± 0.9; range: 13-20 years) at two schools were recruited. An anonymous online real-time computer-assisted self-interviewing questionnaire was designed to assess demographic factors and sexual behaviours. Urine specimens were tested for genital chlamydial and gonococcal infections. The same survey and screening was conducted one year later on the same group of students. Overall, 670 individual students (993 visits) were enrolled with 323 students in both surveys. Twenty-seven percent had had sexual intercourse, and more than three quarters (79%) of them had engaged in high-risk sexual behaviours. Having friends using drugs increased the odds of practicing high-risk sexual behaviours (odds ratio [OR] 1.99, 95% CI: 1.13 to 3.50). Among 182 sexually active students, 8.8% had chlamydial (female: 12.5%; male: 5.3%) and 1.1% had gonococcal infections. Having sex with someone met on the Internet was the most significant risk factor for acquiring chlamydia (OR 8.14, 95% CI: 2.82 to 23.51). In conclusion, this adolescent population reported high prevalence of high-risk sexual behaviours and had a high prevalence of chlamydia supportive of a potential epidemic of STIs and HIV. Primary palmar hyperhidrosis often starts in childhood. It usually causes academic and social disabling at the age children begin primary school. This study included 65 children (44 girls and 21 boys, mean age 13.5 years) who underwent one-stage bilateral transthoracic endoscopic sympathectomy. The proper sympathetic segment was visualized in almost all cases and electrocautery ablation was performed. The immediate postoperative course was uneventful in all cases and no major morbidity was encountered. Horner's syndrome did not occur in any case. All patients were discharged the day of surgery or after an overnight stay. The duration of follow-up was from 6 months to 3 years. Although compensatory sweating was found in 40% of the patients, long-term satisfaction was reported in 63 cases (96%). This procedure is effective, simple, and is recommended as the method of choice for surgical treatment of severe upper extremity hyperhidrosis in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting. We report a 4-month-old female with this complication who was successfully treat ed by computed tomography-guided percutaneous transhepatic catheter drainage, shunt externalization, and parenteral antibiotics. Liver abscess is a possible intra-abdominal complication of VP shunting, and imaging studies are good adjuncts in making the clinical diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
