Abstract Background This study addresses the scarcity of research on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) in China. It aims to explore the current NVP status in the country using validated questionnaires, analyze associated factors, and provide a useful reference for future research. The study also compares results from different assessment tools. Methods Online questionnaires were utilized to gather data from 535 pregnant women across 24 provinces. Demographic, pregnancy, and NVP-related information were collected. NVP severity was assessed using Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE) and the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (RINVR) scales. Ordinal logistic regression identified factors linked to NVP severity. Differences between PUQE and RINVR assessments were compared. Results NVP prevalence exceeded 90%, with 96.1% assessed by PUQE and 90.8% by RINVR. Incidence decreased from nausea to retching and vomiting. Abstract Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)‐related dry eye disease (DED) is a significant subtype of DED. In this research, we investigate the effectiveness of far infrared (FIR) functional glasses in the treatment of MGD‐related DED. According to the TFO DEWS II diagnostic criteria, 61 eyes with MGD‐related DED were included. All participants wore functional FIR glasses throughout the day for a period of 4 weeks and were followed up three times during the treatment. Abstract Background To investigate the validation of phenol red thread (PRT) test in a Chinese population by evaluating the intraobserver repeatability and interobserver reproducibility, determining correlations between the PRT test and other dry eye disease (DED) parameters including tear meniscus height (TMH) and Schirmer I test, and testing the accuracy of diagnosing DED when using the PRT test alone. AbstractBlueberries are rich in anthocyanins, which are plant-specific secondary metabolites that are a good source of plant nutrients. Although anthocyanins have been investigated, there is a lack of comprehensive detailed research that includes large numbers of blueberry cultivars, and the anthocyanin compositions of some cultivars are still unknown. Consequently, we determined the anthocyanin compositions of 62 cultivars using ultra-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS). In total, we identified 30 anthocyanins derived from five kinds of anthocyanidin. We also identified four glycosides having three kinds of modifications. Among the tested cultivars, ‘Rubel’ contained the highest anthocyanin content, at 534.158 mg/100 g fresh weight (FW), whereas ‘Puru’ contained the lowest anthocyanin content at 71.734 mg/100 g FW. ‘Malvidin-gal’ had the highest average content among all the anthocyanin monomers, at 48.95 mg/100 g FW. ‘HL9’ had the greatest methylation degree, at 79.39%, and ‘HL2’ had the greatest acetylation degree, at 25.14%. This study provides detailed anthocyanin compositions and modifications of different blueberry cultivars. These data will aid in breeding high-quality blueberry cultivars and in developing related healthy functional foods.

Abstract Tumor cells often overexpress immune checkpoint proteins, including CD47, for immune evasion. However, whether or how oncogenic activation of receptor tyrosine kinases, which are crucial drivers in tumor development, regulates CD47 expression is unknown. Here, it is demonstrated that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation induces CD47 expression by increasing the binding of c‐Src to CD47, leading to c‐Src‐mediated CD47 Y288 phosphorylation. This phosphorylation inhibits the interaction between the ubiquitin E3 ligase TRIM21 and CD47, thereby abrogating TRIM21‐mediated CD47 K99/102 polyubiquitylation and CD47 degradation. Knock‐in expression of CD47 Y288F reduces CD47 expression, increases macrophage phagocytosis of tumor cells, and inhibits brain tumor growth in mice. In contrast, knock‐in expression of CD47 K99/102R elicits the opposite effects compared to CD47 Y288F expression. Importantly, CD47‐SIRPα blockade with an anti‐CD47 antibody treatment significantly enhances EGFR‐targeted cancer therapy. In addition, CD47 expression levels in human glioblastoma (GBM) specimens correlate with EGFR and c‐Src activation and aggravation of human GBM. These findings elucidate a novel mechanism underlying CD47 upregulation in EGFR‐activated tumor cells and underscore the role of the EGFR‐c‐Src‐TRIM21‐CD47 signaling axis in tumor evasion and the potential to improve the current cancer therapy with a combination of CD47 blockade with EGFR‐targeted remedy.

Abstract Social interactions can drive distinct gene expression profiles which may vary by social context. Here we use female sailfin molly fish (Poecilia latipinna) to identify genomic profiles associated with preference behavior in distinct social contexts: male interactions (mate choice) versus female interactions (shoaling partner preference). We measured the behavior of 15 females interacting in a non‐contact environment with either two males or two females for 30 min followed by whole‐brain transcriptomic profiling by RNA sequencing. We profiled females that exhibited high levels of social affiliation and great variation in preference behavior to identify an order of magnitude more differentially expressed genes associated with behavioral variation than by differences in social context. Using a linear model (limma), we took advantage of the individual variation in preference behavior to identify unique gene sets that exhibited distinct correlational patterns of expression with preference behavior in each social context. By combining limma and weighted gene co‐expression network analyses (WGCNA) approaches we identified a refined set of 401 genes robustly associated with mate preference that is independent of shoaling partner preference or general social affiliation. While our refined gene set confirmed neural plasticity pathways involvement in moderating female preference behavior, we also identified a significant proportion of discovered that our preference‐associated genes were enriched for ‘immune system’ gene ontology categories. We hypothesize that the association between mate preference and transcriptomic immune function is driven by the less well‐known role of these genes in neural plasticity which is likely involved in higher‐order learning and processing during mate choice decisions.

Native animals are facing long-term coexistence with invasive plants worldwide, the impacts of which on animal behavior remain poorly known. Potential ecological traps could threaten native birds breeding in invasive plant habitats, but behavioral strategies for birds to avoid such risks are few concerned. The invasion of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) has seriously varied the vegetation landscape in the coastal wetlands of eastern China, and affected the habitat selection of native birds. Here, we investigated the nesting and breeding characteristics of a common native passerine, the Vinous-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora webbiana), in habitats dominated by native Common Reed (Phragmites australis) and exotic cordgrass. We found that parrotbills could complete their breeding cycle in cordgrass habitat. Most nest failure was attributed to predation in native habitat but tide inundation in cordgrass habitat. However, the nest success rate and daily survival rate (DSR) in cordgrass habitat were higher. Moreover, nest height was markedly higher in cordgrass habitat and was the most important influencing variable (positively correlated with the DSR). These results suggest that cordgrass habitat is a potential ecological trap due to the tide inundation, but some parrotbills seem to effectively avoid this risk by increasing nest height. Our study reveals that a native passerine changes its nesting behavior to accommodate invasive plant habitat and highlights that habitat changes caused by invasive plants may drive the adaptive evolution of native animal behavior. The limitation of these results must be acknowledged for the small sample size, and there is a need for a larger sample and long-term data for further verification.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dried blueberry pomace (BP) and pineapple pomace (PP) on the growth performance and meat quality of broiler chickens. A total of 240 1-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were randomly divided into 3 groups, with 10 replicates per treatment group and 8 birds per replicate (4 males and 4 females). The three groups were the control (CON) group, the 3% BP group, and 3% PP group. The entire trial period lasted 42 days. The results show that the average daily feed intake, average daily gain, and feed-to-gain ratio of the BP group and the PP group were not significantly different from those in the CON group (p > 0.05). Adding BP to the diet significantly reduced the proportion of liver and giblets (p < 0.05). Adding PP to the diet significantly reduced the proportion of liver, while the proportion of gizzard significantly increased (p < 0.05). The pH24h and L* of breast muscles were significantly lower in the PP group than in the CON group (p < 0.05). The water-holding capacity of the leg muscles in the BP group and the PP group was significantly lower than that in the CON group (p < 0.05). The crude protein content of breast muscle and the ether extract content of leg muscle in the BP group were significantly lower than those in the CON group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the addition of 3% BP and PP to broiler chickens’ diets had no adverse effects on growth performance or meat quality.

Gut microbiota depletion may result in cognitive impairment and emotional disorder. This study aimed to determine the possible association between host gut microbiota, cognitive function, and emotion in various life stages and its related underlying mechanisms. Seventy-five neonatal mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 15 per group). Mice in the vehicle group were administered distilled water from birth to death, and those in the last four groups were administered antibiotic cocktail from birth to death, from birth to postnatal day (PND) 21 (infancy), from PND 21 to 56 (adolescence), and from PND 57 to 84 (adulthood), respectively. Antibiotic exposure consistently altered the gut microbiota composition and decreased the diversity of gut microbiota. Proteobacteria were the predominant bacteria instead of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes after antibiotic exposure in different life stages. Long-term and infant gut microbiota depletion resulted in anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, memory impairments, and increased expression of γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptor α1 of adult mice. Long-term antibiotic exposure also significantly decreased serum interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, and corticosterone of adult mice. Gut microbiota depletion in adolescence resulted in anxiety-like behaviors, short-term memory decline, decreased serum interferon-γ (IFN-γ), mRNA expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A, and neuropeptide Y receptor Y2 in the prefrontal cortex of adult mice. Antibiotic exposure in adulthood damaged short-term memory and decreased serum IL-10, IFN-γ, and increased γ-aminobutyric acid type B receptor 1 mRNA expression of adult mice. These results suggest that antibiotic-induced gut microbiota depletion in the long term and infancy resulted in the most severe cognitive and emotional disorders followed by depletion in adolescence and adulthood. These results also suggest that gut microbes could influence host cognitive function and emotion in a life stage-dependent manner by affecting the function of the immune system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the expression of neurochemicals in the brain.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disease characterized by microbiota disturbance and intestinal mucosal damage. The current study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of Bifidobacterium bifidum BD-1 (BD-1) against long-term IBD and possible mechanism by which it alters the gut microbiota, immune response, and mucosal barrier. Our study found that early treatment of BD-1 + Ceftri (ceftriaxone followed by BD-1) and BD-1 confers a certain protective effect against the occurrence of long-term Dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis, which manifests as a decrease in inflammation scores and MPO activity levels, as well as a relatively intact intestinal epithelial structure. Moreover, compared to BD-1, Ceftri, and NS, early treatment with BD-1 + Ceftri promoted greater expression levels of mucosal barrier-related proteins [KI67, MUC2, ZO-1, secretory immunoglobulin A (slgA), Clauding-1, and Occludin], better local immune responses activation, and moderately better modulation of systemic immune responses during long-term colitis. This may be due to the fact that BD-1 + Ceftri can deliberately prolong the colonization time of some beneficial microbiota (e.g., Bifidobacterium) and reduce the relative abundance of inflammation-related microbiota (e.g., Escherichia/Shigella and Ruminococcus). Interestingly, we found that the changes in the gut barrier and immunity were already present immediately after early intervention with BD-1 + Ceftri, implying that early effects can persist with appropriate intervention. Furthermore, intervention with BD-1 alone in early life confers an anti-inflammatory effect to a certain degree in the long-term, which may be due to the interaction between BD-1 and the host’s native gut microbiota affecting intestinal metabolites. In conclusion, BD-1 was not as effective as BD-1 + Ceftri in early life, perhaps due to its failure to fully play the role of the strain itself under the influence of the host’s complex microbiota. Therefore, further research is needed to explore specific mechanisms for single strain and native microbiota or the combination between probiotics and antibiotics.

Brusatol (Bru), a Chinese herbal extract, has a variety of anti-tumor effects. However, little is known regarding its role and underlying mechanism in glioblastoma cells. Here, we found that Bru could inhibit the proliferation of glioblastoma cells in vivo and in vitro. Besides, it also had an inhibitory effect on human primary glioblastoma cells. RNA-seq analysis indicated that Bru possibly achieved these effects through inhibiting the expression of extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1). Down-regulating the expression of ECM1 via transfecting siRNA could weaken the proliferation and invasion of glioblastoma cells and promote the inhibitory effect of Bru treatment. Lentivirus-mediated overexpression of ECM1 could effectively reverse this weakening effect. Our findings indicated that Bru could inhibit the proliferation and invasion of glioblastoma cells by suppressing the expression of ECM1, and Bru might be a novel effective anticancer drug for glioblastoma cells.

Background: There is limited evidence on the use of video laryngoscopy (VL) in neonatal tracheal intubation (NTI) during neonatal resuscitation. In this study, we aimed to compare the difference between direct laryngoscopy (DL) and VL in NTI of trainees during neonatal resuscitation training.Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted during a neonatal resuscitation training course to examine three circumstances: NTI by experienced medical staff (EMS) and less-experienced medical staff (LEMS) in a neonatal resuscitation scenario; NTI by EMS and LEMS with an ongoing chest compression; and NTI by midwives who were novices in the procedure. The trainees were given scenarios or were shown demonstrations on newborn simulation manikins and were required to perform an NTI on a simulation manikin using DL and/or VL. The mean intubation time and success rate of intubation were measured.Results: The mean NTI time for EMS using VL (24.1 ± 7.2 s) was significantly longer than that using DL intubation (18.1 ± 6.9 s, P < 0.001), whereas there was no significant difference between using VL and DL for LEMS. EMS spent slightly less time on NTI than did LEMS using both VL and DL, but there were no statistically significant differences (both p > 0.05). The NTI success rate for EMS using VL (48.0%, 12/25) was significantly lower than that using DL (88.0%, 22/25, P = 0.004), while the NTI success rate for LEMS using VL (68.2%, 15/22 vs. 40.9%, 9/22) was higher than that using DL, but there was no statistical significance. When NTI was required with ongoing chest compressions, there was no significant difference in the mean NTI time and success rate between using VL and DL for EMS or LEMS. In the group of midwives who were novices in NTI, after they watched a demonstration teaching NTI, the intubation time using VL (19.6 ± 9.0 s) was significantly shorter than that using DL (28.0 ± 6.7 s, P < 0.001). The success rate of NTI using VL was significantly higher (96.2%; 25/26) than that using DL (69.2%; 18/26).Conclusion: The video laryngoscopy could be an effective training tool for inexperienced staff in developing the skill of tracheal intubation.

The aroma fingerprints and discrimination analysis of shiitake mushrooms under different drying conditions were performed by GC-IMS, GC-MS, and descriptive sensory analysis (DSA) with advanced chemometric methods. Three samples (A, B, and C) were treated with varied drying degree and rate. The sample A and C were at the same drying degree and the sample B and C were at the same drying rate. The GC-IMS volatile fingerprints, including the three-dimensional topographic map, topographic map, and gallery plot, showed that 29 compounds showed higher signal intensities in sample B. Moreover, 28 volatile compounds were identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS and only 8 compounds were ever detected by GC-IMS. The sample B not only had more varieties of volatile compounds, but also showed significant higher contents than sample A and C, especially C8 compounds (p < 0.05). Additionally, sample B showed the highest intensity in mushroom-like, chocolate-like, caramel, sweat, seasoning-like, and cooked potato-like odors by DSA. PCA, fingerprint similarity analysis (FSA) and PLSR further demonstrated that the sample B was different from sample A and C. These results revealed that samples with different drying degree were different and drying degree exerted more influence on the volatile flavor quality than the drying rate. This study will provide a foundation and establish a set of comprehensive and objective methods for further flavor analysis.

A pleiotropic gene governs multiple traits, which might constrain the evolution of complexity due to conflicting selection on these traits. However, if the pleiotropic effect is modular, then this can facilitate synergistic responses to selection on functionally related traits, thereby leveraging the evolution of complexity. To understand the evolutionary consequence of pleiotropy, the relation among functionally different traits governed by the same gene is key. We examined a pleiotropic function of the foraging (for) gene with its rover and sitter allelic variants in fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. We measured for's effect on adult male aggressive behaviours and whether this effect was shaped by for's known role in food-related traits. Rover exhibited higher levels of offensive behaviour than sitters and s2, a sitter-like mutant on rover genetic background. With a Markov chain model, we estimated the rate of aggression escalation, and found that the rover pattern of aggressive escalation more rapidly intensified fights. Subsequent analysis revealed that this was not caused by for's effect on food-related traits, suggesting that for might directly regulate aggressive behaviours. Food deprivation did not elevate aggression, but reduced intermediate-level aggressive behaviours. Aggression and other foraging-related behaviour might comprise a synergistic trait module underlaid by this pleiotropic gene.

Objective. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, and insulin therapy has many side effects in the treatment of DN. Islet transplantation has emerged as a promising therapy for diabetic patients. This study was established to investigate its advantageous effects in a rat model of early DN. Methods. Streptozotocin was administered to the rats to induce diabetes. Twelve weeks later, the diabetic rats were divided into 3 groups: the islet-transplanted group (IT group), the insulin-treated group (IN group), and the untreated group (DN group). Renal injury and kidney structure were assessed by urinalysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) detection. Immunohistochemical staining and western blotting were performed to assess renal fibrosis levels. Results. The early DN features were reversed and the glomerular filtration barrier and basement membrane structures were improved at 4 weeks after islet transplantation. The urine microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), protein-to-creatinine ratio, and mean thickness of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) were significantly decreased in the IT group. The expression of renal fibrotic factors was also significantly decreased. Conclusions. These data suggest that early DN can be reversed after islet transplantation, and they may facilitate the development of a clinical therapeutic strategy for human diabetes mellitus.

Objective. Revascularization of aortorenal bypass is a preferred technique for renal artery stenosis (RAS) in diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients. Restenosis of graft vessels also should be considered in patients lacking good control of blood glucose. In this study, we explored a combined strategy to prevent the recurrence of RAS in the DN rat model. Methods. A model of DN was established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Rats were divided into 4 groups: SR group, MIT group, Com group, and the untreated group. The levels of blood glucose and urine protein were measured, and changes in renal pathology were observed. The expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in graft vessels was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. Histopathological staining was performed to assess the pathological changes of glomeruli and tubules. Results. The levels of urine protein and the expression of MCP-1 in graft vessels were decreased after islet transplantation. The injury of glomerular basement membrane and podocytes was significantly ameliorated. Conclusions. The combined strategy of revascularization and microencapsulated islet transplantation had multiple protective effects on diabetic nephropathy, including preventing atherosclerosis in the graft vessels and alleviating injury to the glomerular filtration barrier. This combined strategy may be helpful for DN patients with RAS.

As an important hub on the East Asian-Australian Flyway (EAAF), Hongze Lake is an important migratory stopover and wintering site for hundreds of thousands of birds. However, research on bird community diversity in this area is still lacking. We conducted a bird survey from July 2020 to June 2021 using the line transect method on the terrestrial habitat, as well as the fixed-point method in the lake wetland at the Sihong Hongze Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve located in northwestern Hongze Lake, and analyzed the temporal-spatial variation in the bird community. The results showed that a total of 170432 detections of 215 bird species belonging to 18 orders and 55 families were recorded. In terms of species composition, the proportion of terrestrial birds was relatively high, followed by waterfowl richness, with high numbers of Anatidae species and shorebirds. For bird species abundance, waterfowl had the highest abundance of common coot (Fulica atra), belonging to the Rallidae family, followed by Anatidae and Ardeidae species. The abundance of shorebirds was extremely low, and that of non-waterfowl was also low. In terms of temporal patterns, the number of bird species and richness index were higher in spring and autumn but lower in winter and summer. The bird abundance was the highest in winter, and the remaining three seasons were similar in terms of bird abundance. The diversity index and evenness index were higher in spring, summer and autumn, and lowest in winter. For the spatial pattern, the open water in the western part of the reserve included the most densely distributed areas for birds, and the number of bird species and their abundance were both the highest in that part. There were significant differences in the bird community structures among the four habitats. The species number and richness index of birds in the reed habitat were the highest, and the bird abundance was also high, but the diversity index and evenness index were low. Although the bird abundance in the lake habitat was much higher than in the other habitats, the diversity index, evenness index and richness index were the lowest. The numbers of bird species and individuals in tourist attraction land and farmland were low, but the diversity index, evenness index and richness index were high. Our results reveal the spatial and temporal patterns of bird species diversity and abundance in Sihong Hongze Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve, and reflect the effects of different habitat types on bird diversity. Obstructive renal injury is a common disease that leads to progressive glomerulosclerosis, tubulointerstitial fibrosis and loss of renal function. MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) are small non-coding molecules that may be involved in the progression of many renal diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the roles of miRNAs, including miR-125b, miR-326 and miR-324p, in obstructive renal injury. Blood samples were collected from 91 patients with ureteral obstruction and 76 controls to examine renal function. In addition, the levels of miR-125b, miR-326 and miR-324p in patients with ureteral obstruction and controls were determined by the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, the relationship between miRNA levels and renal function was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U test. Upregulated levels of serum creatinine (SCr) in patients with ureteral obstruction were observed, identifying the injury of renal function. Although the expression levels of miR-324-5p [1.003 (0.391-2.279) vs. 0.934 (0.579-1.539), P=0.300] and miR-326 [0.840 (0.180-2.020) vs. 0.949 (0.507-1.702), P=0.050] presented no significant difference, the levels of miR-125b-5p [0.755 (0.210-2.110) vs. 0.960 (0.390-1.770), P=0.002] in patients with ureteral obstruction were significantly lower than those in controls. These results indicated that there is a stronger correlation of miR-125b-5p with the occurrence of ureteral obstruction, especially for the female (P=0.0171) and elderly (P=0.0142). Furthermore, the levels of miR-125b-5p (r=-0.175, P=0.038) were closely associated with the serum levels of SCr, suggesting a key role of miR-125b-5p in renal dysfunction. Thus, these findings suggested that miR-125b-5p in patients with ureteral obstruction correlated with renal function, and may be a potential biomarker for obstructive renal injury. The liquid-liquid equilibria of ionic liquid-based systems with water and/or acetic acid have been studied at 293.15 K and atmospheric pressure. One hydrophilic ionic liquid and a series of hydrophobic ionic liquids were investigated in order to examine their effect on the separation of water and acetic acid mixtures. The ionic liquids studied were [P666,14]Cl, [P666,14][NTf2], [C4mmim][NTf2], [Cnmim][NTf2] (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10), [C4mpyrr][NTf2], [N1114][NTf2], and [C2mim][EtSO4]. [C2mim][EtSO4] is totally miscible with water and acetic acid in all compositions. Comparing [P666,14]Cl with [P666,14][NTf2], the former showed higher extraction selectivities; however, due to the larger viscosity of [P666,14]Cl, the [NTf2]- based ionic liquids offer a better solvent choice for the liquid extraction processes. As expected, as the solubility of water decreases with increasing the chain length of ionic liquids, this in turn leads to [C10mim][NTf2] showing greater acetic efficiency than [C2mim][NTf2] for the separation of water and acetic acid. The experimental data obtained for ternary systems containing the [C4mmim][NTf2] demonstrated that the modification of the C(2) position on the imidazolium ring does not significantly affect the selectivity compared with [C4mim][NTf2]. Tetraalkyl ammonium and N-alkyl pyrrolidinium based ionic liquids were also studied with the [NTf2]- anion with the results for the system containing the [C4mpyrr][NTf2] demonstrating a higher selectivity for the separation of water and acetic acid than the other [NTf2]- based systems studied. All experimental data were then correlated using the UNIQUAC model within an accuracy close to 1.6%. Finally, the ionic liquids were also compared with standard molecular extraction solvent, for example, methyl tert-butyl ether and methyl isobutyl ketone. The organic solvents showed an advantage over the [Cnmim][NTf2]-based ionic liquids but only over a narrow composition range. In all ionic liquid systems, the selectivity remains high at low acetic acid concentration compared with that found in the organic solvents, which is important for practical operation and demonstrates the advantages of using an ionic liquid for the extraction. Coerced copulations cause sexual conflict: they enhance male fitness at a potential cost to female fitness. In contrast, male display allows female mate choice and stimulates cooperation, and so is thought to be an alternative to coercion. Here, we investigate the evolutionary relationship between coercion and display in Gambusia, a genus of poeciliid fish. We used a novel Markov chain method to quantify the transition rate from a male display to a copulatory thrust (the display-to-thrust [DT] rate), which we use to measure the importance of male display to copulation. We assess the potential for male coercion and the female response to coercion based on morphology. We found positive relationships between DT rate and 2 morphologies that are indicative of coercion: male gonopodium shape and the male morphological mating advantage (the ratio of gonopodium shape to female papilla size scores). We suggest that male display can cause the evolution of traits involved in sexually antagonistic coevolution, or conversely that display can evolve as a byproduct of sexual antagonism.
