The data produced by the scientific community impacts on academia, clinicians, and the general public; therefore, the scientific community and other regulatory bodies have been focussing on ethical codes of conduct. Despite the measures taken by several research councils, unethical research, publishing and/or reviewing behaviours still take place. This exploratory study considers some of the current unethical practices and the reasons behind them and explores the ways to discourage these within research and other professional disciplinary bodies. These interviews/discussions with PhD students, technicians, and academics/principal investigators (PIs) (N=110) were conducted mostly in European higher education institutions including UK, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic and Netherlands. Through collegiate discussions, sharing experiences and by examining previously published/reported information, authors have identified several less reported behaviours. Some of these practices are mainly influenced either by the undue institutional expectations of research esteem or by changes in the journal review process. These malpractices can be divided in two categories relating to (a) methodological malpractices including data management, and (b) those that contravene publishing ethics. The former is mostly related to "committed bias", by which the author selectively uses the data to suit their own hypothesis, methodological malpractice relates to selection of outdated protocols that are not suited to the intended work. Although these are usually unintentional, incidences of intentional manipulations have been reported to authors of this study. For example, carrying out investigations without positive (or negative) controls; but including these from a previous study. Other methodological malpractices include unfair repetitions to gain statistical significance, or retrospective ethical approvals. In contrast, the publication related malpractices such as authorship malpractices, ethical clearance irregularities have also been reported. The findings also suggest a globalised approach with clear punitive measures for offenders is needed to tackle this problem.

Tongue image analysis is an efficient and non-invasive technique to determine the internal organ condition of a patient in oriental medicine, for example, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Japanese traditional herbal medicine, and traditional Korean medicine (TKM). The diagnosis procedure is mainly based on the expert's knowledge depending upon the visual inspection comprising color, substance, coating, form, and motion of the tongue. But conventional tongue diagnosis has limitations since the procedure is inconsistent and subjective. Therefore, computer-aided tongue analyses have a greater potential to present objective and more consistent health assessments. This manuscript introduces a novel Simulated Annealing with Transfer Learning based Tongue Image Analysis for Disease Diagnosis (SADTL-TIADD) model. The presented SADTL-TIADD model initially pre-processes the tongue image to improve the quality. Next, the presented SADTL-TIADD technique employed an Efficient Net-based feature extractor to generate useful feature vectors. In turn, the SA with the ELM model enhances classification efficiency for disease detection and classification. The design of SA-based parameter tuning for heart disease diagnosis shows the novelty of the work. A wide-ranging set of simulations was performed to ensure the improved performance of the SADTL-TIADD algorithm. The experimental outcomes highlighted the superior of the presented SADTL-TIADD system over the compared methods with maximum accuracy of 99.30%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is an effective treatment for arresting progression in keratoconus cases. It is considered safe despite a few complications that have been recorded earlier. In this case series, we report a rare and late complication caused due to severe stromal thinning up to Descemet's membrane in three patients who underwent CXL 3 to 6 years back for keratoconus. Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) was then done for the affected eye with good outcomes. This case series highlights the possible late effects of UVA irradiation post CXL. Purpose: Poverty can be a cause and consequence of blindness. Some causes only affect the poorest communities (e.g. trachoma), and poor individuals are less likely to access services. In low income countries, cataract blind adults have been shown to be less economically active, indicating that blindness can exacerbate poverty. This study aims to explore associations between poverty and blindness using national survey data from Nigeria. Methods: Participants ≥40 years were examined in 305 clusters (2005–2007). Sociodemographic information, including literacy and occupation, was obtained by interview. Presenting visual acuity (PVA) was assessed using a reduced tumbling E LogMAR chart. Full ocular examination was undertaken by experienced ophthalmologists on all with PVA <6/12 in either eye. Causes of vision loss were determined using World Health Organization guidelines. Households were categorized into three levels of poverty based on literacy and occupation at household level. Results: A total of 569/13,591 participants were blind (PVA <3/60, better eye; prevalence 4.2%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.8–4.6%). Prevalences of blindness were 8.5% (95% CI 7.7–9.5%), 2.5% (95% CI 2.0–3.1%), and 1.5% (95% CI 1.2–2.0%) in poorest, medium and affluent households, respectively (p = 0.001). Cause-specific prevalences of blindness from cataract, glaucoma, uncorrected aphakia and corneal opacities were significantly higher in poorer households. Cataract surgical coverage was low (37.2%), being lowest in females in poor households (25.3%). Spectacle coverage was 3 times lower in poor than affluent households (2.4% vs. 7.5%). Conclusion: In Nigeria, blindness is associated with poverty, in part reflecting lower access to services. Vibratory feeders are commonly used in industries for part feeding. There are several factors that affect the conveying velocity of parts on the vibratory feeder. Among these, the critical factors such as excitation frequency, amplitude of vibration, mass of part, co-efficient of friction and Length-towidth (L/W) ratio of the part were considered for experimental studies. The percentage of influence of each factor on conveying velocity was determined through ANOVA. Regression and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were developed to predict the velocity of prismatic parts on vibratory feeder. Seed grading is an important practice for better crop establishment and to improve efficiency of planting ratio in field and also useful in separation of quality seed in a seed lot. The influence of seed size on physiological and biochemical seed quality characters were evaluated in Tephrosia seeds using seeds retained on 5.5/64", 6/64" and 7/64" sieves along with control. The estimations revealed that larger size seeds retained on 7/64" sieves recorded the maximum recovery (64 %), 100 seed weight (2.0 g), speed of germination (14.1) germination ( 86 %), root length (8.5 cm), shoot length (11.0 cm), dry matter production (15.92 mg seedlings-10), vigour index (1677) and protein (10.56 %) compared to BSS 5.5 / 64'', BSS 6 / 64'' and ungraded seeds. Purpose: Couching is an ancient treatment for cataract which is still practiced in some of the poorer developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study is to describe risk factors for couching and visual acuity outcomes in a nationally representative sample of adults aged 40 years and above in Nigeria. Methods: Probability in proportion size methods were used to identify a representative sample. Of the 15,375 adults enumerated, 13,582 were interviewed and examined. Examination included logMar acuities, slit lamp examination and dilated fundoscopy with digital fundus imaging. Results: Almost half of the 583 eyes undergoing a procedure for cataract had been couched (249 eyes, 42.7%). Individuals living in rural areas ( P = 0.033) and in the two underserved northern administrative zones ( P = 0.33; P = 0.002) were more likely to have been couched. Visual outcomes were poor according to World Health Organization categories, with 55.8% of people and 73.1% of eyes having a presenting visual acuity of less than 3/60 and only 9.7% and 2.4% of people and eyes respectively having a good outcome (6/18 or better). None were wearing an aphakic correction, and with correction acuities improved but 42.6% of eyes were still blind (< 3/60). Conclusions: Couching is still widely practiced in Nigeria and visual outcomes are very poor. The population needs to be made aware of the risks associated with the procedure, and services for high quality, affordable cataract surgery need to be expanded, particularly in rural areas and in the north of the country. Laboratory classes form an important aspect of bioscience education. However, this environment is challenging for students due to cognitive load and lack of confidence. Familiarising students with aspects of their laboratory classes prior to the session can improve this. This study compares the pre-laboratory scaffolding that bioscience and chemistry students experience across UK HE institutions. Typically, bioscience modules used fewer types of activities than chemistry although reading the protocol was the most common activity for both disciplines. Within bioscience, pre-laboratory activities differed by level: first year undergraduates were more likely to be asked to read the protocol, watch videos or do calculation practice in their modules whereas final year undergraduates were more likely to experience experimental design or contextualised activities. Alongside this, this paper discusses an institutional case study of the development and evaluation of technical laboratory videos as pre-laboratory scaffolding for first year students. These were found to benefit both student focus and enhance confidence: implying that using the videos impacted on cognitive load and hence learning. Exploring barriers to the uptake of these resources identified a lack of awareness of them as a major factor, suggesting that greater integration of such resources would enhance engagement and impact.
