IntroductionThe Lower Jurassic Beipiao Formation in the western Liaoning of northeast China represents a significant case study for understanding the interplay between volcanic activity, sedimentary processes, and organic matter enrichment.MethodsThis study aims to investigate the lithofacies, depositional environments, and hydrocarbon potential of the Beipiao Formation, using core, outcrop, thin-section, and geochemical data.ResultsThirteen lithofacies types were identified, which reflect a complex depositional history influenced by volcanic processes and gravity flows. The sedimentary facies analysis revealed three key depositional environments: shallow lake, semi-deep to deep lacustrine, and fan delta. The basin evolution suggests a transition from fan delta deposits to deep lake deposits and then back to fan delta, with volcanic and gravity flow deposits interbedded. Volcanic activity not only provided nutrient-rich environments conducive to biological productivity but also helped create conditions favorable for organic matter preservation. The earthquake, flooding or stormed events induced gravity flow, which favored plant fragments dispersal to the deep-lake and formed type III kerogen in the deep-lake developed area.DiscussionThese findings suggest that the Jurassic Beipiao Formation in western Liaoning Province, exhibit significant hydrocarbon potential. This challenges previous assumptions regarding the dominance of shallow water environments and limited exploration prospects within the Yanshan Orogenic Belt. Furthermore, this study highlights the crucial role of volcanic activity and gravity flow in organic matter enrichment, transportation, and preservation within a volcanic-rift basin, with potential applicability to similar basins worldwide.

Multi-material additive manufacturing holds immense potential for performance and functionality enhancement. Past research efforts primarily focused on the horizontal interface (perpendicular to the sample build direction) during the laser-powder bed fusion (LPBF) of multi-materials, whereas a few studies demonstrated that the vertical interface (parallel to the sample build direction) is in fact the main obstacle towards high-integrity multi-material fabrication in a three-dimensional space. In this work, facilitated by our own patented powder spreading device, we explored the mechanisms behind defect formation along both the horizontal and vertical interfaces during the LPBF production of 316L stainless steel and K220 copper multi-materials. High-fidelity fluid dynamics simulations were also conducted to rationalise the experimental observations. A practical process parameter optimisation approach is also proposed at the end, with the aim of mitigating those large defects currently occurring near the vertical interface.

Abstract Background With the development and utilization of three-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanning (IOS) technology, the morphological characteristics of teeth were quantitatively assessed. In this research, we aimed to explore the prevalence of dental caries in relation to each measurable morphological indicator of the tooth body via 3D intraoral scanning techniques. Methods A hospital-based single-centre study was conducted at our hospital from Dec. 2021 to Apr. 2023. A total of 53 patients were involved in the study, providing complete morphological data for 79 teeth. Each patient completed an oral hygiene routine questionnaire and underwent examination by an experienced dentist to evaluate caries conditions before undergoing 3D intraoral scanning to obtain a digital dental model. Geomagic Studio 2014 was used to extract oral morphological data from the models. The acquired data were entered, cleaned and edited using Excel 2016 and subsequently exported to SPSS version 25.0 for analysis. Chi-square analysis and logistic regression analyses were employed to test the associations. Results Among the participants, 33 (61.1%) were female, with a mean age of 26.52 ± 10.83 years. Significant associations were found between dental caries and the vertical distance between the distal tip and the gum (OR 14.02; 95% CI 1.80-109.07; P = 0.012), the distal lateral horizontal distance of occlusion (OR 0.40; 95% CI 0.18–0.90; P = 0.026), and the mesial horizontal distance of occlusion (OR 2.20; 95% CI 1.12–4.31; P = 0.021). The Hosmer–Lemeshow test indicated a P value of 0.33. Conclusions The vertical distance between the distal tip and the gum, the distal lateral horizontal distance of the occlusion and the mesial horizontal distance of the occlusion were the influencing factors for dental caries (identified as independent risk factors). We hypothesize that these factors may be associated with the physiological curvature of teeth and the role of chewing grooves in plaque formation over time. However, further studies involving larger population samples and more detailed age stratification are still needed.

Background Gastric intestinal metaplasia(GIM) is an independent risk factor for GC, however, its pathogenesis is still unclear. Ferroptosis is a new type of programmed cell death, which may be involved in the process of GIM. The purpose of this study was to analyze the expression of ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) in GIM tissues and to explore the relationship between ferroptosis and GIM. Method The results of GIM tissue full transcriptome sequencing were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO) database. R software (V4.2.0) and R packages were used for screening and enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes(DEGs). The key genes were screened by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO) and support vector machine-recursive feature elimination(SVM-RFE) algorithm. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of key genes in GIM. Clinical samples were used to further validate hub genes. Results A total of 12 differentially expressed ferroptosis-related genes (DEFRGs) were identified. Using two machine learning algorithms, GOT1, ALDH3A2, ACSF2 and SESN2 were identified as key genes. The area under ROC curve (AUC) of GOT1, ALDH3A2, ACSF2 and SESN2 in the training set were 0.906, 0.955, 0.899 and 0.962 respectively, and the AUC in the verification set were 0.776, 0.676, 0.773 and 0.880, respectively. Clinical samples verified the differential expression of GOT1, ACSF2, and SESN2 in GIM. Conclusion We found that there was a significant correlation between ferroptosis and GIM. GOT1, ACSF2 and SESN2 can be used as diagnostic markers to effectively identify GIM.

The vibration waves generated by pressure fluctuations can substantially impair and jeopardize the structural integrity of roadway anchorage within adjacent rock formations, thereby presenting a significant risk to the safety and operational efficiency of mining activities. In order to address this issue and elucidate the response characteristics of roadway-anchored surrounding rock subjected to P-wave and S-wave influences, this study employs a roadway that is experiencing actual impact instability within a mine situated in Xinjiang as the engineering context. The synchrosqueezing wavelet transform, enhanced by a Butterworth filter, is utilized to isolate and filter seismic wave data, thereby facilitating the extraction of time-frequency signals corresponding to both P-waves and S-waves. Subsequently, a dynamic numerical model is developed to simulate the propagation of these vibration waves. An analysis of the dynamic behavior and response characteristics of P-waves and S-waves is performed, focusing on their interaction with roadway anchoring within the surrounding rock at various stages of propagation. The results indicate that weak rock and plastic zones can absorb vibrational waves, with S-waves exhibiting a stronger absorption effect than P-waves. S-waves contribute to increased stress and displacement in the surrounding rock, leading to the accumulation of elastic energy and an expansion of the plastic zone. The rapid fluctuations in the axial force of bolts along the roadway, caused by S-waves, can result in instability within the roadway. The research findings possess considerable reference value and practical applicability for the design of anti-scour support systems in roadways.

Plant-parasitic nematodes constrain global food security. During parasitism, they secrete effectors into the host plant from two types of pharyngeal gland cells. These effectors elicit profound changes in host biology to suppress immunity and establish a unique feeding organ from which the nematode draws nutrition. Despite the importance of effectors in nematode parasitism, there has been no comprehensive identification and characterisation of the effector repertoire of any plant-parasitic nematode. To address this, we advance techniques for gland cell isolation and transcriptional analysis to define a stringent annotation of putative effectors for the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii at three key life-stages. We define 717 effector gene loci: 269 "known" high-confidence homologs of plant-parasitic nematode effectors, and 448 "novel" effectors with high gland cell expression. In doing so we define the most comprehensive "effectorome" of a plant-parasitic nematode to date. Using this effector definition, we provide the first systems-level understanding of the origin, deployment and evolution of a plant-parasitic nematode effectorome. The robust identification of the effector repertoire of a plant-parasitic nematode will underpin our understanding of nematode pathology, and hence, inform strategies for crop protection.

Macrophages, known for their phenotypic plasticity, play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis and inflammation-related pathogenesis. Although identifying diverse macrophage phenotypes holds promise for enhancing diagnoses and treatments of diseases mediated by macrophages, existing methodologies for differentiating macrophages often lack precision. They are limited by the cumbersome procedures that require large-scale equipment, such as flow cytometry and transcriptomic analysis. In this context, we have engineered fluorescent polyadenine (polyA)-mediated sticky flares that enable practical visualization of macrophages. This technology facilitates the highly sensitive detection of macrophage phenotypes through the specific recognition of intracellular mRNAs, permitting in situ imaging. Our approach demonstrates the potential for determining macrophage polarization status at the single-cell level within dynamic immune microenvironments, thereby providing crucial diagnostic and prognostic information that could guide the development of tailored treatments for macrophage-related diseases in personalized medicine.

Abstract Background Cyst nematodes are one of the major groups of plant-parasitic nematode, responsible for considerable crop losses worldwide. Improving genetic resources, and therefore resistant cultivars, is an ongoing focus of many pest management strategies. One of the major bottlenecks in identifying the plant genes that impact the infection, and thus the yield, is phenotyping. The current available screening method is slow, has unidimensional quantification of infection limiting the range of scorable parameters, and does not account for phenotypic variation of the host. The ever-evolving field of computer vision may be the solution for both the above-mentioned issues. To utilise these tools, a specialised imaging platform is required to take consistent images of nematode infection in quick succession. Results Here, we describe an open-source, easy to adopt, imaging hardware and trait analysis software method based on a pre-existing nematode infection screening method in axenic culture. A cost-effective, easy-to-build and -use, 3D-printed imaging device was developed to acquire images of the root system of Arabidopsis thaliana infected with the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii, replacing costly microscopy equipment. Coupling the output of this device to simple analysis scripts allowed the measurement of some key traits such as nematode number and size from collected images, in a semi-automated manner. Additionally, we used this combined solution to quantify an additional trait, root area before infection, and showed both the confounding relationship of this trait on nematode infection and a method to account for it. Conclusion Taken together, this manuscript provides a low-cost and open-source method for nematode phenotyping that includes the biologically relevant nematode size as a scorable parameter, and a method to account for phenotypic variation of the host. Together these tools highlight great potential in aiding our understanding of nematode parasitism.

It is of great significance to explore the chemical compositions, which have not been hitherto examined for their suitability for additive manufacturing (AM), so as to broaden AM’s material library. Since solidification cracking is a major impediment in AM of alloys, especially high entropy alloys (HEAs), a detailed study on the cracking issue during AM is imperative. Keeping this in mind, a customized laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) setup is utilized to fabricate a compositionally graded AlxCoCrFeNi (x = 0.04–0.75) HEA, using the equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi and CoCrFeNi powders as feedstock, to examine the compositional range that enables crack-free fabrication. Experimental results show that when x ≤ 0.7, crack-free fabrication is possible. This compositional range exceeds the threshold reported in the recent literature. Microstructural characterization reveals a constant dual phase structure throughout the gradient, which is induced by the chemical segregation. Further analysis shows that both utilizing AlCoCrFeNi powder as Al source and the segregation contribute to the enhanced printability. The results suggest that the dual phase structure introduced by chemical segregation can effectively inhibit the initiation and propagation of hot tearing problem in metal additive manufacturing.

Abstract Retrograde tracers based on viral vectors are powerful tools for the imaging and manipulation of upstream neural networks projecting to a specific brain region, and they play important roles in structural and functional studies of neural circuits. However, currently reported retrograde viral tracers have many limitations, such as brain area selectivity or the inability to retrograde label genetically defined brain-wide projection neurons. To overcome these limitations, a new retrograde tracing method, AAV-PHP.eB assisted retrograde tracing systems (PARTS) based on rabies virus, was established through brain-wide TVA-dependent targeting using an AAV-PHP.eB that efficiently crosses the blood–brain barrier in C57BL/6 J mice, and complementation of EnvA-pseudotyped defective rabies virus that specifically recognizes the TVA receptor. Furthermore, combined with Cre transgenic mice, cell-type-specific PARTS (cPARTS) was developed, which can retrograde label genetically defined brain-wide projection neurons. Our research provides new tools and technical support for the analysis of neural circuits.

Plastic deformation and fracture behavior of Cu/V nanoscale metallic multilayers (NMMs) were systematically investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy testing. Two different types of interfaces: sharp interfaces and interfacial transition zones (ITZs), formed in the as-fabricated Cu/V NMMs. Upon deformation, sharp interfaces and ITZs exert distinct influences on the fracture behavior of Cu/V NMMs. Sharp interfaces can impede the crack propagation by deflecting the crack propagation and blunting the crack tip, while the ITZs can induce microcracks and facilitate the fracture process. These findings shed light on the important roles of interface structures in the deformation of a broad class of NMMs.

The competition between dislocation slip and deformation twinning in body-centered cubic (BCC) nanocrystals can be strongly influenced by the deformation conditions. In this study, we investigate the deformation of [112]-oriented BCC tungsten nanowires under different loading modes. It shows that dislocation plasticity is a predominant deformation mode under uniaxial tension, while deformation twinning prevails when non-uniaxial stress is applied. The interfaces of bending-induced twinning are composed of numerous stepwise {112} twin boundaries. These findings shed light on the deformation mechanism of BCC nanocrystals under complex loading conditions.

This paper aims to find a forecasting model based on the comparative study of wavelet- ARIMA and EMD-ARIMA models and residual-based model selection technique for temperature time series. Time series analysis is essential in studying temperature data for investigating the variation and predicting the future trend, in which we can control the changes and make good decisions. And most important is to understand the trend in the series with time. This study applied hybridized models of wavelet transform and empirical mode decomposition with seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA), which combines two models to get better accuracy, for forecasting daily average temperature time series data in the central region of Eritrea, Asmara. Daily data was collected for 30 years, from January 1, 1991, to December 31, 2020. The study compares WT-SARIMA and EMD-SARIMA models to find a well fit and better forecasting model. Model selection techniques are essential for time series analysis to determine which model best fits our data. AIC and BIC are the most used methods in model selection. This paper uses an additional method based on the residual series. In estimating accurate parameters, the structure of the residual sequence had a lot of connection, in which a stationary residual depict an accurate estimation. From this perspective, a nonstationarity measurement of the residual series is used for model selection. The relative performance is based on the predictive capability of sample forecasts assessed. The results indicate that the hybridized wavelet-SARIMA model is more effective than the other models, and MATLAB soft-wire is used for this analysis.

Objective - This paper aims to analyse the impact of the China-Laos railway on export trade from China to Thailand. The paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the new route and other routes base on driven factors, identifies what trade industry is suitable for this new route and provides some reference for Thai trade exporters. This will enable Thai export traders to understand the new transportation route formed by the railway and improve the trade volume and competitiveness of Thai products through this route. Methodology/Technique - Literature review method, secondary data method, in-depth interview method. Findings - It is found that the new route formed after the completion of the China-Laos railway has many advantages base on driven factors and many industries are suitable for the use of this new route. Novelty - Few people know much about the China-Laos railway, and even less about the analysis of its impact on Thailand's trade. According to basic theories of sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy and the previous research, using cores, seismic data and logging data, the sequence of Shahezi Formation is divided. Shahezi Formation is a second-order sequence, which can be divided into four third-order sequences and nine fourth-order sequences. After sequence division, the stratigraphy framework of Shanhezi Formation is established. Three main sedimentary facies are identified, namely braided delta, fan delta and lacustrine facies. According to the tectonic evolution of the faulted basin, the favorable reservoir zones are predicted. It can be concluded that braided delta plain is the favorable reservoir zone laterally, and third-order sequence SQ4 has a good exploration potential vertically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
