Azobenzenes are a class of compounds presenting photoisomerization capabilities that allow the writing and erasure of birefringence along a desired direction. This feature enables applications requiring polarization control, which although have been extensively investigated in the visible light spectrum, poor emphasis has been paid to the infrared region. In this paper, a systematic characterization of induced birefringence creation and relaxation dynamics has been carried out in azopolymers thin films in the infrared telecommunications region of 1550 nm. This study covers both birefringence characterization in terms of wavelength and irradiance of birefringence writing beams. Preliminary results revealed remarkable maximum birefringence values as high as 0.0465 attained during the recording phase, that stabilized at 0.0424 during the relaxation phase, which is quite promising for many applications.

Bioradar systems, in general, refer to radar systems used for the detection of vital signs. These systems hold significant importance across various sectors, particularly in healthcare and surveillance, due to their capacity to provide contactless solutions for monitoring physiological functions. In these applications, the primary challenge lies in the presence of random body movements (BMs), which can significantly hinder the accurate detection of vital signs. To compensate the affected signal in a timely manner, portions of BM must be correctly identified. To address this challenge, this work proposes a solution based on the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBScan) algorithm to detect the occurrence of BM in radar signals. The main idea of this algorithm is to cluster the radar samples, aiming to differentiate between segments in which the subject is stable and segments in which the subject is moving. Using a dataset involving eight subjects, the proposed method successfully detects three types of body movements: chest movement, body rotation, and arm movement. Background: Ischemic preconditioning (IP) is a powerful cellular protection mechanism. The cellular pathways underlying IP are extremely complex and involve the participation of cell triggers, intracellular signaling pathways, and end-effectors. Experimental studies have shown that sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors promote activation of 5′-adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the main regulator of adenosine 5′-triphosphate homeostasis and energy metabolism in the body. Despite its cardioprotective profile demonstrated by numerous clinical trials, the results of studies on the action of SGLT2 inhibitors in IP are scarce. This study will investigate the effects of dapagliflozin on IP in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: The study will include 50 patients with multivessel CAD, ischemia documented by stress testing, and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Patients will undergo four exercise tests, the first two with a time interval of 30 min between them after washout of cardiovascular or hypoglycemic medications and the last two after 7 days of dapagliflozin 10 mg once a day, also with a time interval of 30 min between them. Discussion: The role of SGLT2 inhibitors on IP is not clearly established. Several clinical trials have shown that SGLT2 inhibitors reduce the occurrence cardiovascular events, notably heart failure. However, such studies have not shown beneficial metabolic effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, such as reducing myocardial infarction or stroke. On the other hand, experimental studies with animal models have shown the beneficial effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on IP, a mechanism that confers cardiac and vascular protection from subsequent ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury. The scientific community has been exploring new concepts as a result of the usage of optical fibers as absolute measurement sensors. While cross-sensitivity is a common issue with optical fiber sensors, this issue has been mitigated by simultaneous measurement techniques. But when it comes to absolute measurements, these methods have some limitations. The white light interferometer, which offers a superb solution for a range of applications, especially for absolute temperature measurement, is one of the most often used methods for absolute measurements.

The United Nations (UN) has considered water a human right since 1977. However, freshwater available for consumption represents less than 1% of all water on Earth. Groundwater represents one of the largest reserves of drinking water and is susceptible to chemical contamination, especially from pollutants that seep into the soil, such as atrazine, bisphenol A, and tetracycline. These substances, along with Escherichia coli, were selected to simulate contamination in groundwater samples and evaluate the efficiency of electrochemical oxidation using boron‐doped diamond anodes and four different anion salts to analyze their impact on the treatment process. After electrolysis, the degradation of tetracycline, bisphenol A and atrazine was found to increase with decreasing current density, with average values of 77%, 96% and 100% at 15 mA cm−2 and 68%, 83% and 99% at 35 mA cm−2, respectively. Moreover, the mineralization of these substances showed the same behavior, decreasing from 67%, 64%, and 54% at 15 mA cm−2 to 52%, 35%, and 49% at 35 mA cm−2. The analysis of the results showed that the ions present in the solution significantly affect the degradation process and that they interact with the impurities used. For atrazine and tetracycline, the degradation efficiency followed the same pattern, PO43− ${{\mathrm{PO}}_{4}}^{3-}$ < SO42− ${{\mathrm{SO}}_{4}}^{2-}$ < NO3− ${{\mathrm{NO}}_{3}}^{-}$ < Cl− ${\mathrm{Cl}}^{-}$. However, in the case of bisphenol A and E. coli, phosphate showed better results, similar to nitrate. The high efficiency in eliminating bacteria, even at high concentrations, shows that the electrochemical treatment system has a strong bactericidal effect, eliminating bacterial colonies with up to 5 min of treatment. In this paper we describe the implementation of a secure key distribution system based on an ultra-long fiber laser with a bi-directional erbium doped fiber amplifier. The resilience of the system was tested against passive attacks from an eavesdropper, having been observed a similarity in spectrum for both secure configurations of the system.

The Bio-Radar is herein presented as a non-contact radar system able to capture vital signs remotely without requiring any physical contact with the subject. In this work, the ability to use the proposed system for emotion recognition is verified by comparing its performance on identifying fear, happiness and a neutral condition, with certified measuring equipment. For this purpose, machine learning algorithms were applied to the respiratory and cardiac signals captured simultaneously by the radar and the referenced contact-based system. Following a multiclass identification strategy, one could conclude that both systems present a comparable performance, where the radar might even outperform under specific conditions. Emotion recognition is possible using a radar system, with an accuracy equal to 99.7% and an F1-score of 99.9%. Thus, we demonstrated that it is perfectly possible to use the Bio-Radar system for this purpose, which is able to be operated remotely, avoiding the subject awareness of being monitored and thus providing more authentic reactions. The Bio-Radar system, useful for monitoring patients with infectious diseases and detecting driver drowsiness, has gained popularity in the literature. However, its efficiency across diverse populations considering physiological and body stature variations needs further exploration. This work addresses this gap by applying machine learning (ML) algorithms—Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Random Forest—to classify subjects based on gender, age, Body Mass Index (BMI), and Chest Wall Perimeter (CWP). Vital signs were collected from 92 subjects using a Continuous Wave (CW) radar operating at 5.8 GHz. The results showed that the Random Forest algorithm was the most accurate, achieving accuracies of 76.66% for gender, 71.13% for age, 72.52% for BMI, and 74.61% for CWP. Objective: To analyze the feasibility, safety, and acceptability of immersive virtual tasks. Methods: The authors recruited 11 young adults and 10 older adults. The participants performed three virtual reaching tasks while walking on a virtual path. The descriptive analysis and comparison between participants were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test and chi-square test for nonparametric and nominal variables, respectively. The authors also used analysis of variance for a between-groups comparison for normal variables. Results: Twenty percent of older adults and 81.8% of young adults completed all three tasks (chi-square test; p =.005). Both groups reported minor symptoms, with no significant differences. The older adults were more motivated to practice the tasks (Mann–Whitney U test; p =.015) and would be more likely to suggest them to others (chi-square test; p =.034). Conclusion: All three tasks were feasible for young adults. All participants, except for one, had cybersickness. The symptoms were mostly mild and subsided once the interaction was complete. INTRODUCTION: Hemophilic arthropathy affects people with hemophilia (PwH) and causes joint dysfunction and disability. Brazil has a unique situation and implemented policies to improve health care for PwH. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia (FISH), Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS), and associated factors among adult PwH attending a Hemophilia Comprehensive Care Center in Brazil. METHODS: A post hoc analysis was conducted, including 31 patients who had submitted to a physical evaluation during a previously published cross-sectional study performed from June 2015 to May 2016 at the Brasília Blood Center Foundation, Brazil. RESULTS: The mean age was 30.8±9.4 years, and 80.6% had severe hemophilia. FISH was 27.0±3.8, and HJHS 18.0±10.8. The ankle was the most often affected joint (25/31, 80.6%). There were significant correlations between FISH and HJHS scores and the Hemophilia Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adults. Patients with severe hemophilia (P = 0.029) and PwH aged = 30 years (P = 0.049) had lower FISH scores. Monthly household income > 2 Brazilian minimum wages was independently associated with improved HJHS (P = 0.033). The factors simultaneously associated with better HJHS and FISH were age < 30 years (P = 0.021) and monthly household income < 2 minimum wages (P = 0.013). CONCLUSION: FISH and HJHS showed favorable scores despite being performed in a country with unfavorable socioeconomic conditions. In addition to hemophilia severity and age, monthly household income was independently associated with functional and articular state of PwH. Aims High precordial leads (HPL) on the resting electrocardiogram (ECG) are widely used to improve diagnostic detection of type 1 Brugada ECG pattern (Br1ECGp). A parasympathetic activation marks the initial recovery phase of treadmill stress testing (TET), and this can be useful for detecting the typical ECG pattern. Our study aimed to evaluate the role of a new HPL-treadmill exercise testing (TET) protocol in detecting Br1ECGp fluctuation compared to resting HPL-ECG. Methods and results 74 out of 163 patients of a Brugada syndrome (BrS) Brazilian cohort (GenBra Registry) underwent exercise testing with HPL-TET protocol. Precordial leads were displayed in strategic positions in the right and left parasternal spaces. The step-by-step analysis included ECG classification (as presence or absence of Br1ECGp) in standard vs. HPL leads placement in the following sequences: resting phase, maximal exercise, and the passive recovery phase (including 'quick lay down'). For heart rate recovery (HRR) measurements and comparisons, a Student's t-test was applied. McNemar tests compared the detection of Br1ECGp. The significance level was defined as P < 0.05. Fifty-seven patients (57/74; 77%) were male, the mean age was 49.0 ± 14, 78.4% had spontaneous BrS, and the mean Shanghai score was 4.5. The HPL-TET protocol increased Br1ECGp detection by 32.4% against resting HPL-ECG (52.7% vs. 20.3%, P = 0.001) alone. Conclusion Stress testing using HPL with the passive recovery phase in the supine position offers an opportunity to unmask the type 1 Br1ECGp, which could increase the diagnostic yield in this population. In this paper, a different Fiber Loop Mirror (FLM) configuration with two circulators is presented. This configuration is demonstrated and characterized for sensing applications. This new design concept was used for strain and torsion discrimination. For strain measurement, the interference fringe displacement has a sensitivity of (0.576 ± 0.009) pm‧με−1. When the FFT (Fast Fourier Transformer) is calculated and the frequency shift and signal amplitude are monitored, the sensitivities are (−2.1 ± 0.3) × 10−4 nm−1 με−1 and (4.9 ± 0.3) × 10−7 με−1, respectively. For the characterization in torsion, an FFT peaks variation of (−2.177 ± 0.002) × 10−12 nm−1/° and an amplitude variation of (1.02 ± 0.06) × 10−3/° are achieved. This configuration allows the use of a wide range of fiber lengths and with different refractive indices for controlling the free spectral range (FSR) and achieving refractive index differences, i.e., birefringence, higher than 10−2, which is essential for the development of high sensitivity physical parameter sensors, such as operating on the Vernier effect. Thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of waste expanded polystyrene (WEPS) was studied to obtain mainly styrene monomer, which can be recycled in the polystyrene industry. Initially, preliminary experiments were carried out in a static semi-batch glass reactor with basic catalysts and without catalysts, using toluene as solvent at 250 °C, determining their styrene yields to select the best catalyst. MgO turned out to be the best catalyst due to its stability and cost. This catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET area, SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, UV–VIS, and TGA. The kinetic equation for WEPS pyrolysis in the glass reactor was determined as a first-order reaction. The heat of reaction, the Gibbs free energy change, and the entropy change were calculated. Finally, WEPS pyrolysis experiments were carried out using a rotating semi-batch steel reactor, at higher temperatures and without using solvents, evaluating the styrene yield and its performance for its possible industrial application. In this reaction, the activity remained almost constant after four catalyst regenerations. The best styrene yield was 94 wt%, which could be one of the highest reported in the literature. This result may be associated with the back-mixing obtained in the rotary reactor, in contrast to the performance observed in the static glass reactor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The World Health Organization has recommended social isolation to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. Thus, feelings of loneliness, sedentary behavior, and predisposition to falls have been reported more often due to the adoption of social isolation, especially for older adults. The objective of this study was to compare older adults' loneliness, sedentary behavior, and occurrence of falls before and during social isolation due to the pandemic as well as to analyze the association of loneliness with sedentary lifestyle and falls in older adults. Retrospective analytical study conducted through an online survey with older adults from Brazilian states in social isolation, approved by the Research Ethics Committee (number 32168920.0.0000.0068). There was a significant increase in loneliness and sedentary behavior during social isolation (p-value < 0.05 for both), but no increase was observed for falls (p-value = 0.615). There was no correlation between the outcomes, nor was there a correlation between the outcomes and the number of days in social isolation. The results of this research show that adoption of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic brought an increase in sedentary behavior and loneliness for older adults but had no effect on the number of falls. In this article, we reflect on essential aspects of the exercise of the economic and urban centrality assumed by the city of Balsas in the regional scenario Sulmaranhense. This analysis took into consideration the study on the historical on the historical and social determinants that are understood as essential for a coherent reading of the socioeconomic dynamism assumed by this city in the regional scenario. Thus, we had to understand the particularities related to the genesis and diffusion of the processes of specialization of the tertiary activities, in particular, the commercial activity and its links to the development of the modern agriculture. From the methodological point of view, this analysis was based on the adoption of bibliographic studies related to the thematic area investigated, above all, the studies that involve the processes of space production in cerrado areas that have experienced an intense agricultural modernization since 1980. Associated to these aspects, we also carry out the treatment of statistical and demographic data organized by official bodies. Introdução: A espiritualidade é um aspecto inerente à humanidade, cuja relação com o processo de saúde e adoecimento tem sido demonstrada na literatura. O termo "coping" (enfrentamento) religioso foi apregoado em 2000 e designa como a espiritualidade pode aliviar o processo de adoecimento. Tal conceito consolida-se por meio de evidências científicas como instrumento de minoração de estresse e melhora de desfechos em saúde. Objetivo: Descrever como as crenças e redes de apoio permeiam as etapas do transplante renal em pacientes do Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto (HUPE). Metodologia: Aplicação de anamneses espirituais com oito pacientes transplantados renais do HUPE, no primeiro semestre de 2024, compostas por história clínica, fontes de apoio, e na aplicação do questionário HOPE. Realizadas análises epidemiológicas e qualitativas acerca do perfil religioso, espiritual, interpessoal e médico e análise das manifestações positivas e negativas do "coping" espiritual. Resultados: A etiologia da DRC foi HAS (25%), DM e HAS (25%), causas congênitas (37,5%) e indeterminada (12,5%), com faixa etária de 35,3. A Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia publicou em 2016 que 34% dos transplantados renais possuem Hipertensão (HAS) e 30% Diabetes (DM) como causa da Doença Renal Crônica (DRC), sendo a média etária de 50,2. O IBGE de 2022 evidencia que 50% da população é católica, 31% evangélica, 10% indeterminados e 0,3% judeus. Esta amostra é formada por 37,5% pacientes sem religião, 37,5% católicos, 12,5% evangélicos e 12,5% judeus. De acordo com as entrevistas, a família e Deus são as principais fontes de apoio, correspondendo a 75% e 25%, respectivamente. Metade dos pacientes relata que as demais relações tornaram-se mais frágeis no processo pré e pós-transplante. Deus é citado como fonte de enfrentamento por 75% dos pacientes. Premissas da fé cristã são citadas como fontes de força, tais como fé, alegria e propósito. Dicotomicamente, sinais de "coping" negativo são percebidos em 62,5% dos pacientes, sendo o principal a culpa. Conclusões: Em resumo, observamos que o perfil epidemiológico e etário da DRC da amostra caracteriza pacientes jovens e predomínio de doenças congênitas, o que reflete o nível quaternário. Tratando-se de religiosidade, foi detectado retrato religioso distinto, em virtude do tamanho da amostra. Destacam-se Deus, a fé e a família como principais meios de apoio em todo permeio do transplante e a culpa como potencial fragilidade da espiritualidade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is characterized by the inability to concentrate urine that results in polyuria and polydipsia, despite having normal or elevated plasma concentrations of arginine vasopressin (AVP). In this study, we review the clinical aspects and diagnosis of NDI, the various etiologies, current treatment options and potential future developments. NDI has different clinical manifestations and approaches according to the etiology. Hereditary forms of NDI are mainly caused by mutations in the genes that encode key proteins in the AVP signaling pathway, while acquired causes are normally associated with specific drug exposure, especially lithium, and hydroelectrolytic disorders. Clinical manifestations of the disease vary according to the degree of dehydration and hyperosmolality, being worse when renal water losses cannot be properly compensated by fluid intake. Regarding the diagnosis of NDI, it is important to consider the symptoms of the patient and the diagnostic tests, including the water deprivation test and the baseline plasma copeptin measurement, a stable surrogate biomarker of AVP release. Without proper treatment, patients may developcomplications leading to high morbidity and mortality, such as severe dehydration and hypernatremia. In that sense, the treatment of NDI consists in decreasing the urine output, while allowing appropriate fluid balance, normonatremia, and ensuring an acceptable quality of life. Therefore, therapeutic options include nonpharmacological interventions, including sufficient water intake and a low-sodium diet, and pharmacological treatment. We report a case of an infant with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) diagnosed by the measurement of serum copeptin. There is only one study that previously evaluated the use of copeptin measurement in a pediatric patient. We present a 10-month-old child with polyuria–polydipsia syndrome (PPS) and hypernatremia that could not support water restriction due to increased risk of dehydration and worsening of his condition. Therefore, plasma measurement of copeptin allowed the diagnosis of NDI. The water deprivation test (WDT) is considered the gold standard for diagnosis in PPS. However, WDT has serious limitations regarding its interpretation. Furthermore, the WDT can cause dehydration and hypernatremia, especially in young children. Therefore, the measurement of plasma copeptin seems to be a promising method to perform an earlier, safer, and accurate investigation of PPS. Context: Soluble alpha klotho (sαKL) has been linked to growth hormone (GH) action, but systematic evaluation and comparisons with traditional biomarkers in acromegaly are lacking.Objective: To evaluate the potential of sαKL to aid classification of disease activity.Methods: This retrospective study at 2 academic centers included acromegaly patients before surgery (A, n = 29); after surgery (controlled, discordant, or uncontrolled) without (B1, B2, B3, n = 28, 11, 8); or with somatostatin analogue treatment (C1, C2, C3, n = 17, 11, 5); nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (n = 20); and healthy controls (n = 31). sαKL was measured by immunoassay and compared with traditional biomarkers (random and nadir GH, insulin-like growth factor I [IGF-I], IGF binding protein 3). Associations with disease activity were assessed.Results: sαKL was correlated to traditional biomarkers, particularly IGF-I (rs=0.80, P <0.0001). High concentrations before treatment (A, median, interquartile range: 4.04 × upper limit of normal [2.26-8.08]) dropped to normal after treatment in controlled and in most discordant patients. A cutoff of 1548 pg/mL for sαKL discriminated controlled (B1, C1) and uncontrolled (B3, C3) patients with 97.8% (88.4%-99.9%) sensitivity and 100% (77.1%-100%) specificity. sαKL was below the cutoff in 84% of the discordant subjects. In the remaining 16%, elevated sαKL and IGF-I persisted, despite normal random GH. Sex, age, body mass index, and markers of bone and calcium metabolism did not significantly affect sαKL concentrations.Conclusion: Our data support sαKL as a biomarker to assess disease activity in acromegaly. sαKL exhibits close association with GH secretory status, large dynamic range, and robustness toward biological confounders. Introduction: Arthropathy is the main morbidity of haemophilia. Periodic joint health assessment enables a better understanding of the limitations of these patients. Objective: To evaluate the functional and joint performance in patients with haemophilia at one‐year follow‐up, as well as its association with prophylactic treatment and attendance at scheduled consultations at a haemophilia treatment centre. Methods: This prospective cohort study included patients with severe haemophilia aged 7 years or more and treated at Fundação Hemocentro de Brasília, Brazil, from January 2014 to December 2018. The Hemophilia Joint Health Score and Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia were assessed at the first consultation and after a one‐year follow‐up. Results: The study included 69 patients. The mean age at study recruitment was 22.5 ± 4.5 years, 62.3% of patients aged 18 years or older, and 29 patients were receiving primary prophylaxis (38.0%). There was a positive correlation between HJHS and age and a negative correlation between FISH and age. The worsening HJHS was associated with non‐primary prophylaxis and non‐attendance at scheduled multidisciplinary consultations. The worsening FISH was associated with non‐primary prophylaxis. The correlation between FISH and treatment adherence was significant for the delta. Conclusion: The older the patient with haemophilia, the higher the probability of a worsening of the HJHS. In the presence of more arthropathies, the older the patient, the worse the FISH. Patients receiving primary prophylaxis show better results in the HJHS and FISH when compared to patients receiving secondary prophylaxis and/or on‐demand treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

aims to identify compliance with a treatment protocol in adult patients with hemophilia and to evaluate the factors associated with and the impact on mortality of noncompliance with a hemophilia treatment protocol. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that was performed between June 2015 and May 2016, followed by a cohort to evaluate mortality until July 2019 that included all adult patients with hemophilia registered in the Federal District, Brazil. Results: Among 138 patients enrolled in the study, 35 patients were compliant with all items of the treatment protocol (25.4%). Regarding each item, compliance with the medical consultations was 71.0% (98/138); the clotting factor regimen was 65.9% (91/138); and the serological tests were 51.4% (71/138). The mortality was 7.2% (10/138). Noncompliance with any aspect of the protocol was associated with mortality: medical consultations (p< 0.001), clotting factor regimen (p=0.013), and serological tests (p=0.006). All deaths occurred in those who did not comply with the protocol, and the majority were due to bleeding. Patients who were noncompliant with all protocol items showed the highest mortality (50.0%, 5/10). Treatment at the hemophilia treatment center (OR: 2.388; 95% CI: 1.052– 5.418, p=0.037) was positively and independently associated with compliance with the protocol in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Noncompliance with the treatment protocol was high. Treatment at a hemophilia treatment center was positively and independently associated with compliance with the protocol, which reinforces the importance of comprehensive care by a multidisciplinary team. O tema-problema da pesquisa que se pretende desenvolver é a desigualdade, invisibilidade e constate violação dos direitos fundamentais das mulheres no sistema carcerário brasileiro. A reflexão acerca do tema inicia a partir da análise do caos instaurado nas penitenciárias femininas ao longo de todo território brasileiro e do que o Estado prevê como garantias para o seu povo. Em primeiro plano, pode-se afirmar, que essas infrações ocorrem, levando em conta que achar fezes de rato na comida ou pegar uma micose extensa da genitália até o meio da coxa, e não conseguir tratala pela junção da proliferação de micróbios nas celas e falta de produto de higiene pessoal não conferem com a garantia constitucional de não submissão a tortura, nem ao tratamento desumano ou degradante. O abandono sofrido pelas presidiárias, destacando seus familiares, é essencialmente gerado pela instaurada sociedade patriarcal que não reconhece como iguais homens e mulheres, especialmente em situação de cárcere. Diferente da maioria da população masculina, as mães, avós e principalmente namoradas ou esposas dos presos não costumam abandonar seus cônjuges. Muitos casos de depressão se iniciam com esse desamparo, e se estendem por tempo prolongado, o que torna ainda mais enigmática a falta de zelo com elas, visto que o maior número de prisões é derivado do tráfico de drogas, e essa parcela representativa, em sua grande maioria vem do envolvimento com o crime através do companheiro, em apreensões nas visitas, que são verdadeiramente constantes. Nesses casos também são formados maiores e mais complexos obstáculos para sua ressocialização, gerando o esquecimento dessas cidadãs e a debilitação da implantação de normas especificas tão necessitadas no complexo feminino. A maternidade nesse âmbito é um assunto delicado, apesar da lei prever o contato do bebê com a mãe nos primeiros 6 meses de vida, seu cumprimento é limitado, principalmente em cadeias superlotadas. Os abusos e maus-tratos para com as detentas grávidas existem e não podem continuar sendo velados. Somente o fato de adaptarem presídios destinados a homens para o uso de mulheres já deixa evidente a existência de um déficit social naquela localidade. Dos tijolos às escovas de dente, esse tipo de instalação não é propícia para a sobrevivência digna de pessoas que precisam de absorventes, sutiãs, calcinhas, itens não cogitados pela massa carcerária masculina. O problema objeto da investigação científica proposta é: quais as dificuldades encontradas pelas mulheres do sistema carcerário brasileiro? A partir das reflexões preliminares sobre o tema, é possível afirmar inicialmente que a falta de voz e constantes violações de direitos básicos, das mulheres no sistema carcerário brasileiro, desencadeiam um ciclo de violência e desigualdade que prejudica a população como um todo. O objetivo geral do trabalho é identificar, examinar e comparar as dificuldades encontradas pelas mulheres pertencentes ao sistema prisional em Belo Horizonte, para constatar quais os reflexos da precariedade do sistema como um todo são encontrados, evidenciando a necessidade de uma maior visibilidade para essa parcela. A pesquisa que se propõe pertence à vertente metodológica jurídico-sociológica. No tocante ao tipo de investigação, foi escolhido, na classificação de Witker (1985) e Gustin (2010), o tipo jurídico-projetivo. O raciocínio desenvolvido na pesquisa será predominantemente dialético. De acordo com a técnica de análise de conteúdo, afirma-se que se trata de uma pesquisa teórica, o que será possível a partir da análise de conteúdo das entrevistas, dos textos doutrinários, normas e demais dados colhidos na pesquisa. A partir do exposto conclui-se que a violação dos direitos das mulheres em situação de cárcere é reflexo da ineficiência da ação estatal, bem como de uma escolha política de tratamento desumano para com as encarceradas.
