In this article, we examine the role financial slack plays in a particularly hostile environment: economic recession. We employ competing theoretical views on the function of financial slack to examine its relationship to firm performance in a population of firms facing extreme resource scarcity. Using econometric data from 450 software firms from 2001 to 2003, we find that higher levels of financial slack are detrimental at the onset of a recession but can accelerate recovery. However, the arrival of the internet resulted in the entry of&nabs;both&nabs;enterprise and mass market software&nabs;vendors into computer services. The shift from conventional software products towards web services is examined.

The software industry has been experiencing a software crisis, a difficulty of delivering software within budget, on time, and of good quality. This may happen due to number of defects present in the different modules of the project that may require maintenance. This necessitates the need of predicting maintenance urgency of the particular module in the software. In this paper, we have applied the different predictor models to NASA five public domain defect datasets coded in C, C++, Java and Perl programming languages. Twenty one software metrics of different datasets and Java Classes of thirty five algorithms belonging to the different learner categories of the WEKA project have been evaluated for the prediction of maintenance severity. The results of ten fold cross validation are recorded in terms of Accuracy, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) for different project datasets. The results show that logistic model Trees (LMT) and Complimentary Naive Bayes (CNB) based Model provide a relatively better prediction consistency compared to other models and hence, can be used for the maintenance severity prediction of the software. The developed system can also be used for analysis and to evaluate the influence of different factors on the maintenance severity of different software project modules. Innovation in information technology and the use of the Internet have enabled electronic marketplaces to become an important mechanism for linking suppliers and customers in a cost-efficient fashion. Previous research has generally focused on the benefits of electronic marketplaces from transaction cost economics and strategic perspectives. Yet very little academic research has addressed how to actually operate such a marketplace. In this paper, after reviewing the status of electronic marketplaces research, we focus on an operational perspective. A model of an electronic marketplace linking customers and suppliers either directly or via an intermediary is given and solved under various scenarios. This model uses a single cost-minimizing objective and the extensions address issues such as (1) a physical presence for the electronic marketplace, which can provide value-added services and preserve anonymity; and (2) sole sourcing or dual sourcing. An additional model explicitly represents the diverse objectives of the multiple players in the market using goal programming. The contribution of this research to practitioners is to offer a cost-effective alternative to current forms of allocating supply and demand. The cost-minimizing and multiple criteria models and extensions in this study make a contribution to research by expanding the horizons of previous studies on the operation of electronic marketplaces. The evolution of the Indian software sector is explained by the larger context of uneven and combined development. The imperatives of a market-driven global order suggest an open-ended process of development, making some economic and technological convergence realizable but also generating contradictions at various levels. This paper focuses on differential innovative capability, the uneven diffusion of technical education in India, and the increasing economic integration of the software industry as sources of uneven development. The combined nature of the development process is reflected in the coexistence of the successful software sector with several lagging sectors with all of them being functionally integrated as part of Indian social formation. To cope with the contradictions of such change a balanced development will be critical. To make development more inclusive deep structural problems that plague those outside the orbit of the successful software industry must be resolved.
