Innovative and renewable polymers and additives are the focus of increased research due to public and environmental pressure. There has been a recent uptick in interest from scientists in biobased 'green' plasticizers that can be covalently bonded to replace harmful and migratory phthalate-based plasticizers. Vegetable oils (VOs) are one of the biosources, as they are both plentiful and sustainable. This review aims to highlight the synthesis methods for soy-based polyesters. Therefore, the chemistry of soybean oil as a polymeric material and its role in the synthesis of polyesters derived from soybeans are the primary topics of this review. This review covers the many ways in which soybean oil and its derivatives can be used to synthesize polyester, either directly or indirectly. Given the narrow genetic base of North American soybean germplasm, which originates from approximately 35 ancestral lines, discovering and introducing useful diversity for key traits in exotic germplasm could potentially enhance diversity in the current elite gene pool. This study explores the potential of exotic germplasm to enhance yield and agronomic traits in the University of Guelph soybean germplasm. We utilized a nested association mapping (NAM) design to develop a population (n = 294) composed of crosses of high-yielding Canadian elite cultivar, OAC Bruton, with four high-yielding exotic lines developed at USDA (Urbana, IL), and we mapped the genetic architecture of agronomic and seed composition traits using association mapping methods. The analysis across three Southwestern Ontario environments revealed seven unique genomic regions underlying agronomic traits and four for seed composition traits, with both desirable and undesirable alleles from the exotic parents. Notably, a region on chromosome 10, co-locating to the E2 maturity locus, was found to be associated with seed yield and maturity. The allele that increased yield by 166 kg/ha was contributed by all exotic parents and was absent in the Canadian-adapted parent. The study underscores the potential of using exotic germplasm to introduce novel genetic diversity into the Canadian elite soybean breeding pool. Background: Under global warming, high temperature (HT) has become a major meteorological factor affecting soybean production. To explore the candidate genes and regulatory mechanism of the soybean bud response to HT stress, previously identified as HT-tolerant ('Handou14'; HD14) and HT-sensitive ('Jiadou36'; JD36) were treated for 5 days in an artificial climate incubator either with HT (43 °C (day)/ 33 °C (night), 16 h light/8 h darkness) or the non-stress growth condition (25 °C, 16 h light/8 h darkness) as the control at the bud stage were used as experimental materials in this study. After HT treatment, changes in physiological indicators including hypocotyl length, enzyme activity and hormone content were detected; at the same time, the cotyledons, hypocotyls, and main roots were collected for transcriptome sequencing analysis. Analyzing the mechanisms of HT stress response in the bud stage of HD14 and JD36 at physiological and transcription levels. Results: Analysis of physiological indicator showed that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly increased 47.4% and 41.2% in the cotyledon of HD14 and the main root of JD36, and the contents of peroxidase (POD) were significantly increased 61.5% and 125% in the hypocotyl of HD14 and JD36; the contents of malonaldehyde (MDA) were significantly increased 44.8% and 22.2% in the main root of HD14 and JD36 after HT treatment. The content of abscisic acid (ABA) were significantly increased 1.9 fold and 1.2 fold in the root of HD14 and JD36 in response to HT treatment, whereas the content of gibberellin (GA) were decreased 2.2 fold and 1.3 fold in the cotyledon and root, and increased 1.6 fold in the hypocotyl in HD14 (P < 0.05). Thus, higher SOD and POD activities, higher ABA content, and a smaller increase in MDA content may improve tolerance to HT stress. The HT-tolerant cultivar may have stronger GA signal transduction in the hypocotyl to combat the negative effects of HT. RNA-sequencing was performed to analyze the differential expression of genes in buds of the two cultivars under the HT treatment and control condition. In total, 3,633, 1,964, 9,934, and 3,036 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the CH (control group of HD14) vs. TH (HT-treatment group of HD14), CJ (control group of JD36) vs. TJ (HT-treatment group of JD36), TJ vs. TH, and CJ vs. CH comparison groups, respectively. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that most DEGs were mainly involved in metabolic processes, catalytic activity, carbohydrate, energy transduction, and signaling pathways. The results of qRT-PCR validation (86.67%) and changes in physiological indicators were consistent with the RNA-sequencing data. Five DEGs were selected as candidate genes in the response to HT stress at the bud stage. Conclusion: In summary, soybean cells are protected from oxidative damage by an increase in antioxidant enzyme activities and accumulation of hormone content under HT stress. Concomitantly, changes in the expression of crucial genes and signal transmission processes are induced, thus initiating adaptive and protective mechanisms. Background: Flavonoids are a structurally diverse group of secondary metabolites, predominantly produced by plants, which include a range of compounds with pharmacological importance. Pinocembrin is a key branch point intermediate in the biosynthesis of a wide range of flavonoid subclasses. However, replicating the biosynthesis of these structurally diverse molecules in heterologous microbial cell factories has encountered challenges, in particular the modest pinocembrin titres achieved to date. In this study, we combined genome engineering and enzyme candidate screening to significantly enhance the production of pinocembrin and its derivatives, including chrysin, pinostrobin, pinobanksin, and galangin, in Escherichia coli. Results: By implementing a combination of established strain engineering strategies aimed at enhancing the supply of the building blocks phenylalanine and malonyl-CoA, we constructed an E. coli chassis capable of accumulating 353 ± 19 mg/L pinocembrin from glycerol, without the need for precursor supplementation or the fatty acid biosynthesis inhibitor cerulenin. This chassis was subsequently employed for the production of chrysin, pinostrobin, pinobanksin, and galangin. Through an enzyme candidate screening process involving eight type-1 and five type-2 flavone synthases (FNS), we identified Petroselinum crispum FNSI as the top candidate, producing 82 ± 5 mg/L chrysin. Similarly, from a panel of five flavonoid 7-O-methyltransferases (7-OMT), we found pinocembrin 7-OMT from Eucalyptus nitida to yield 153 ± 10 mg/L pinostrobin. To produce pinobanksin, we screened seven enzyme candidates exhibiting flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) or F3H/flavonol synthase (FLS) activity, with the bifunctional F3H/FLS enzyme from Glycine max being the top performer, achieving a pinobanksin titre of 12.6 ± 1.8 mg/L. Lastly, by utilising a combinatorial library of plasmids encoding G. max F3H and Citrus unshiu FLS, we obtained a maximum galangin titre of 18.2 ± 5.3 mg/L. Conclusion: Through the integration of microbial chassis engineering and screening of enzyme candidates, we considerably increased the production levels of microbially synthesised pinocembrin, chrysin, pinostrobin, pinobanksin, and galangin. With the introduction of additional chassis modifications geared towards improving cofactor supply and regeneration, as well as alleviating potential toxic effects of intermediates and end products, we anticipate further enhancements in the yields of these pinocembrin derivatives, potentially enabling greater diversification in microbial hosts. The review delves into the climatic suitability of Egypt for soybean cultivation, identifying favorable temperature ranges, sunlight exposure, and strategic irrigation practices. It also examines the challenges faced by Egyptian soybean farmers, including water scarcity, pest infestations, and competition from other crops. Strategies to enhance Egypt's soybean agriculture are proposed, emphasizing breeding programs focused on high yields, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. The pivotal role of genetic diversity in sustainable agriculture is underscored, and the strategic introduction of soybean varieties through international collaborations is advocated. It is useful to analyze volatile flavor compounds and identify characteristic fingerprints for improving the aroma of vegetable soybean in the vegetable soybean breeding program. In this study, headspace‐gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry was applied to evaluate the volatile compounds of four vegetable soybean cultivars with different preservation processes. The results revealed that aldehydes, alcohols, and esters determined the basic volatile flavor of the vegetable soybean seeds. The peak intensities of most of the volatile compounds varied significantly between both cultivars and preservation methods. Compared with the preservation processes, the differences between cultivars would contribute more to the flavor. The characteristic fingerprints were further identified in the four cultivars, including Xiang Dou, Changxing Qingdou, Wu Pi Qing Ren, and Zhe Xian No. 84, with different preservation processes. Although the flavor could be affected by the preservation processing, the cultivar Zhe Xian No. 84 was the least affected among these cultivars and had great value in both promotion and application in vegetable soybean production. Vegetative soybean (maodou or edamame) serves as a nutrient-rich food source with significant potential for mitigating global nutritional deficiencies. This study undertook a thorough examination of the nutritional profiles and transcriptomic landscapes of six soybean cultivars, including three common cultivars (Heinong551, Heinong562, and Heinong63) and three fresh maodou cultivars (Heinong527, HeinongXS4, and HeinongXS5). Nutrient analysis of the seeds disclosed notable differences in the levels of protein, fat, soluble sugars, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, and zinc across the cultivars. Through comparative transcriptome profiling and RNA sequencing, distinct variations in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between fresh and traditional maodou cultivars. Functional enrichment analyses underscored the involvement of DEGs in critical biological processes, such as nutrient biosynthesis, seed development, and stress responses. Additionally, association studies demonstrated robust correlations between specific DEG expression patterns and seed nutrient compositions across the different cultivars. Sankey diagrams illustrated that DEGs are strongly linked with seed quality traits, revealing potential molecular determinants that govern variations in nutritional content. The identified DEGs and their relationships with nutritional profiles offer valuable insights for breeding programs focused on developing cultivars with improved nutritional quality, tailored to specific dietary needs or industrial applications. Considering the importance of nickel and iron nutrition for the soybean crop, their deficiency inhibits the yield drastically specially in the area where soybean crop is dominant. To encounter this problem, a pot experiment was conducted in glass house on low nickel and iron soil in Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, during 2019–20 and 2021–22. The study was carried out to investigate the effect of Ni (nickel) and Fe (iron) on the post-harvest soil parameters, growth, yield, nutrient uptake and nutrient content of soybean crop. There were 10 treatments with two levels of Ni (5 and 10 mg kg −1) and Fe (10 and 20 mg kg−1) with recommended dosage of fertilizers nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (8.93, 35.71, and 17.86 mg kg−1) applied to all treatments except control. The result of the experiment revealed that the co-application of nickel and iron@10 mg kg−1 and 20 mg kg−1 (RDF + Ni10Fe20), resulted in the increase in plant height, greeness index, no of seed per pod, no of pod per plant, seed yield, and stover yield. Similar, findings for the post- harvest soil parameter indicated that there was increase in pH, electrical conductivity, and organic carbon content of soil. DTPA (Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) extractable Ni, Fe, Zn, and Cu, also found highest in treatment where nickel and iron@10 mg kg−1 and 20 mg kg−1 (RDF + Ni10Fe20) were applied in soil, but in case of DTPA extractable Mn, the highest amount was found in treatment where nickel and iron@10 mg kg−1 and 10 mg kg−1 (RDF + Ni10Fe10) was applied in soil. The soil microbial biomass carbon and urease activity was also found highest in the treatment where nickel and iron@10 and 20 mg kg−1 was applied in soil. The minimum plant height, greeness index, no of seed per pod, no of pod per plant, seed, and stover yield was recorded in treatment where only RDF(T1) was applied. Similar, result recorded for the post-harvest soil parameters. Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is a versatile crop that holds a high level of protein and fatty acid-rich oil. It plays a vital role in global exchange and the demand for soybean is increasing globally owing to its multiple uses, especially for de-oiled cakes. Therefore, improving the soybean crop productivity helps to acquire additional revenue for the nation. This review highlights the significant role of macro and micro-nutrients in soybean crop. Using different components of crop nutrient inputs like inorganic fertilizers, organic manures and biofertilizers in an integrated manner paves the way for proper utilization of applied nutrients by soybean leading to higher yield. Additionally, it offers soil fertility enhancement by creating positive effects on soil profile compared to the use of synthetic fertilizers alone. Summary Soybean, a staple crop on a global scale, frequently encounters challenges due to lodging under high planting densities, which results in significant yield losses. Despite extensive research, the fundamental genetic mechanisms governing lodging resistance in soybeans remain elusive. In this study, we identify and characterize the Creeping Stem 1 (CS1) gene, which plays a crucial role in conferring lodging resistance in soybeans. The CS1 gene encodes a HEAT‐repeat protein that modulates hypocotyl gravitropism by regulating amyloplast sedimentation. Functional analysis reveals that the loss of CS1 activity disrupts polar auxin transport, vascular bundle development and the biosynthesis of cellulose and lignin, ultimately leading to premature lodging and aberrant root development. Conversely, increasing CS1 expression significantly enhances lodging resistance and improves yield under conditions of high planting density. Our findings shed light on the genetic mechanisms that underlie lodging resistance in soybeans and highlight the potential of CS1 as a valuable target for genetic engineering to improve crop lodging resistance and yield. Glyphosate (GLY) is widely applied in agriculture and horticulture as a herbicide. The development of genetically modified plants has caused abuse of GLY, with excessive residues potentially causing harm to human health. Consequently, a novel method needs to be built to detect GLY in soybeans and corn. Computer simulation was used to design an excellent hapten which was used to produce an anti-GLY monoclonal antibody (mAb) with outstanding sensitivity and affinity, and its 50%-inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 128.59 ng mL−1. Afterwards, an immunochromatographic assay strip was developed based on the mAb. In soybeans and corn, the visual detection limits were 1 mg kg−1 and 0.2 mg kg−1, while the cut-off values were 50 mg kg−1 and 5 mg kg−1, respectively. Shade has a direct impact on photosynthesis and production of plants. Exposure to shade significantly reduces crops yields. Identifying shade-tolerant genomic loci and soybean varieties is crucial for improving soybean yields. In this study, we applied a shade treatment (30% light reduction) to a natural soybean population consisting of 264 accessions, and measured several traits, including the first pod height, plant height, pod number per plant, grain weight per plant, branch number, and main stem node number. Additionally, we performed GWAS on these six traits with and without shade treatment, as well as on the shade tolerance coefficients (STCs) of the six traits. As a result, we identified five shade-tolerance varieties, 733 SNPs and four candidate genes over two years. Furthermore, we developed four kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) makers for the STC of S18_1766721, S09_48870909, S19_49517336, S18_3429732. Intercropping can improve light interception and crop yield on limited farmlands. The light interception rate in intercropping is determined by row configuration. Quantifying the spatio-temporal light interception of intercrops is very important for improving crop yields by optimizing the row configuration. A two-year field experiment was conducted at two sites to quantify the responses of the light interception rate of intercrops to five treatments: two rows of maize alternated with three rows of soybean (2M3S), two rows of maize alternated four rows of soybean (2M4S), two rows of maize alternated five rows of soybean (2M5S), sole soybean (SS), and sole maize (SM). We developed a multiple regression model based on the sine of the solar elevation angle (sin(h)) and crop leaf area density (LAD) to quantify the spatio-temporal light interception of intercrops. The predicted light interception rate was positively correlated with the measured values of photosynthetically active radiation (R2 > 0.814) and dry matter (R2 > 0.830). Increasing soybean rows led to an increase in light interception of both soybean and the lower layer of maize. However, this also resulted in a decrease in light interception in the upper layer of maize. At the two sites, compared to 2M3S, the annual average cumulative light interception of soybean in 2M5S increased by 44.73% and 47.18%, that of the lower layer of maize in 2M5S increased by 9.25% and 8.04%, and that of whole canopy of maize decreased by 13.77% and 17.74% respectively. The changes in dry matter and yield of intercrops were consistent with the change in light interception, which further verified the high accuracy of the light interception model. The annual average maize yield of 2M5S was 6.03% and 6.16% lower but the soybean yield was 23.69% and 28.52% higher than that of 2M3S. On the basis of system yield, the best performance was recorded in 2M4S at the two sites. In summary, the newly created light interception model performs well in the quantification of the temporal and spatial changes in crop light interception in strip intercropping and has potential applications in other configurations. Drought, a prevalent environmental stressor, has had significant consequences on soybean (Glycine max L.), notably impeding its growth and production. Therefore, it is crucial to gain insight into the regulatory responses of soybean plants exposed to drought stress during soybean flowering in the field. In this study, the cultivar 'Liaodou 15' was performed light drought (LD, 24.3% soil moisture content), moderate drought (MD, 20.6% soil moisture content) and severe drought (SD, 16.9% soil moisture content) treatments at flowering stages of soybean and then rehydrated (30% soil moisture content) until harvest. The yield-related indicators were measured and revealed that MD and SD treatments significantly reduced 6.3% and 10.8% of the 100-grain weight. Soybean plants subjected to three drought stresses showed that net photosynthetic rates were 20.8%, 51.5% and 71.8% lower in LD, MD and SD than that of CK. The WUE increased by 31.8%, 31.5% and 18.8% under three drought stress treatments compared to CK. In addition, proline content was 25.94%, 41.01% and 65.43% greater than that of CK under three drought stress treatments. The trend of the MDA content was consistent with that of the proline content. SOD activity was significantly increasing by 10.86%, 46.73% and 14.54% under three drought stress treatments. The activity of CAT in the SD treatment increased by 49.28%. All the indices recovered after rehydration. Furthermore, 54,78 and 51 different expressed metabolomics (DEMs) were identified in the LDCK/LD, MDCK/MD and SDCK/SD groups, respectively. There were 1,211, 1,265 and 1,288 different expressed genes (DEGs) were upregulated and 1,003, 1,819 and 1,747 DEGs were downregulated. Finally, combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis suggested that 437 DEGs and 24 DEMs of LDCK/LD group, 741 DEGs and 35 DEMs of MDCK/MD group, 633 DEGs and 23 DEMs of SDCK/SD group, were highly positively correlated in soybean plants under drought stress. Drought stress induced the expression of the PAO1, PAO4, PAO5 and P5CS genes to promote the accumulation of spermidine and proline. Parental environments have profound consequences for offspring fitness through transgenerational transmission of resources and epigenetic factors. Locomotor activity is a functional trait of considerable ecological importance, as it determines the ability of animals to find food and mates and to disperse to more favourable environments. Although there have been studies demonstrating that animals can plastically increase their locomotor capacity in response to nutritionally stressful environments, it remains largely unexplored whether and how parental diet can adjust offspring locomotor capacity and its related traits. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the parental intake of a nutritionally suboptimal diet would induce hyperactivity in the offspring and that this transgenerational effect could lead to improved offspring performance in an insect herbivore, the bean bug (Riptortus pedestris Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae). We compared the locomotor activity, metabolic phenotype and performance traits of two groups of R. pedestris nymphs born to parents raised on soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr, Fabaceae; standard diet] or peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L., Fabaceae; high‐fat diet). Despite being smaller at birth, the offspring of peanut‐fed parents moved faster and more frequently than those of soybean‐fed parents during their early development. The newly hatched offspring born to peanut‐fed parents had higher relative energy reserves in somatic tissues than those born to soybean‐fed parents, indicating that differential parental provisioning could underpin this parental effect on offspring locomotor activity. Possibly through increased foraging activity, the hyperactive offspring of peanut‐fed parents grew faster into heavier adults than the offspring of soybean‐fed parents, implying that parentally induced increase in offspring locomotor activity is adaptive. This study provides experimental evidence for diet‐mediated transgenerational plasticity of locomotor activity in invertebrates and sheds novel insights into the role of parental diet history in shaping offspring phenotype. Breeders successfully increased US soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yields over the past nearly 100 years and altered various plant characteristics underpinning the yield gains. However, the impact of breeding on plant‐level water‐use efficiency (WUEp) has not been examined yet. This study, conducted across eight environments using maturity group IV cultivars released between 1930 and 2005, aimed to (1) determine if soybean WUEp, assessed using C isotope composition (δ13C) measurements on shoot biomass sampled at early seed filling (R5), has changed with cultivar year of release (YoR), and (2) assess how canopy temperature (CT) and WUEp relate to each other and to seed yield. Across environments and cultivars, δ13C ranged from −27.52‰ to −28.24‰ and the correlation between cultivar YoR and WUEp was positive in four individual environments (p ≤ 0.07), as well as across the eight environments (p = 0.0083), with an average increase of shoot δ13C of 0.004‰ per year of soybean breeding. Lower average δ13C values for specific environments were associated with higher precipitation prior to biomass sampling, which is consistent with a lower WUEp when more water was available. Interestingly, across environments, midday CT at early seed filling was negatively correlated with YoR and WUEp, suggesting that intrinsic WUE of more recently released cultivars was lower during high demand periods. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these relationships between WUEp and CT and to identify physiological mechanisms that can be targeted for breeding high‐yielding cultivars while increasing or maintaining WUEp. The review highlights the different roles and possible anticancer activities of phenolic compounds, phytic acid, protease inhibitors, lignans, and saponins, among other bioactive components. It also addresses the benefits of dietary fiber and oligosaccharides derived from soybeans for intestinal health, as well as the impact of soy protein on diabetes, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular health. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has anticancer and cholesterol-lowering properties; its involvement in promoting metabolic processes is also examined. Pinitol is highlighted in the study as a blood sugar regulator with promise for controlling insulin signaling. In this review, we aim to affirm soybeans' potential as a high-functional, well-being food by examining their recently discovered therapeutic and pharmacological capabilities, rather than to improve upon the previous studies on the reported nutritional advantages of soybeans. Water-soluble protein is an important component of soybean seeds and is usually used as an indicator of soybean quality, especially in soybean food processing. Compared with studies on seed protein or oil content, genetic studies on water-soluble protein content (WSPC) in soybean have lagged. Therefore, to identify genes associated with WSPC in soybean seeds, we systematically performed a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping study based on a recombinant inbred line population consisting of 237 lines derived from Zheng 92116 and Williams 82 and SNP or InDel markers from a genotyping-by-sequencing protocol. As a result, the WSPC at 3 locations from 2016 to 2017 ranged from 26.69 to 40.35% and was normally distributed in each environment. A genetic map consisting of 6,597 markers distributed in 20 linkage groups was constructed. By using the iciMapping and QTL.gCIMapping programs, a total of 20 QTLs with a PVE (proportion of phenotypic variance explained) ranging from 1.86 to 30.03%, distributed throughout 9 chromosomes, were detected, including 2 major QTLs. Among the 20 QTLs, 9 were stable; these QTLs were detected by both programs and/or in two or more datasets and usually presented relatively high LOD and PVE values. Compared with previous studies, 8 of the 20 QTLs above were newly identified, and the other 12 QTLs were the same or identical to the WSPC QTLs reported previously. To identify potential genes underlying WSPC, the QTL with the largest effect, i.e., qWSPC5-3, was selected for further analysis on the basis of the RNA-seq datasets, and the expression profiles of the 27 genes within this interval were analyzed. These results shed new light on the genetics of WSPC in soybean and may also provide important information for improving the functional quality of soybean varieties for breeders. Background/Objectives: osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability. With an aging population and rising obesity rates, OA presents a growing challenge to health systems worldwide. Current OA treatments involve a mix of pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid (HA) has proven effective, especially in knee OA, leading to its recommendation in international guidelines. This study investigates the sustained benefits of a single intra-articular HA injection beyond one year in patients coming from the SOYA trial, considering the EU MDR 2017/745 emphasis on post-market follow-up. Methods: A prospective, observational, open, post-marketing study in a cohort of patients that participated in the SOYA trial. Follow-up was carried out by means of a telephone survey, and the data were anonymized and coded so that patients could not be identified. The study was approved by the Alcorcón Hospital Institutional Review Board (Alcorcón, Madrid, Spain). Results: In the follow-up of the SOYA trial, 81.5% of patients sustained positive effects for over 6 months after the trial ended. This correlated with improved daily functioning, enhanced mood, and high patient satisfaction. Younger age and milder OA grades were associated with prolonged treatment effects. Notably, 82% of patients with >6 months of improvement did not require additional medication. Conclusions: the results of this study support the safety and performance of Adant® Plus as a treatment for patients with mild and moderate knee OA, with results lasting more than one year. Quantifying seedling emergence pressure or forces (soil impedance to seedling) during the process of plant emergence is difficult in a practical setting. In this study, a mechanical seedling testing device was designed and calibrated to measure seedling emergence pressures experienced by conical or spherical mechanical seedling in soil with varying compaction levels. The data were analysed to generate regression models for predicting seedling emergence forces. Results showed a high correlation between the seedling emergence pressure and soil resistance. The resultant regression model produced a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.99. After incorporating the morphological characteristics of soybean cotyledon and maize coleoptile into the model, the predicted seedling emergence forces increased with the soil compaction level. During the emergence process, average emergence force of the soybean seedlings was 11.8 N for the lowest compaction level and 28.5 N for the highest compaction level, and the corresponding values of the maize seedlings were 0.2 N and 0.6 N. In a non-compacted field plot, maize crop had a 95.4% emergence rate and soybean crop had 97.2%, whereas for a compacted plot, the corresponding emergence rates were decreased to 19.1% and 60.5%. Chromosome numbers and morphology are important characteristics of a species and its evolution. Root tips are the most commonly used tissue as a source of actively dividing cells for chromosome visualization in plants. Previously, rapidly growing root tips were collected from germinating kernels or from seedlings growing in pots or fields. However, the use of adventitious roots (ARs) derived from aerial tissue as meristems for chromosome visualization has always been overlooked. Here, we successfully induced ARs in 12 materials that were investigated, with the exception of Sorghum nitidum. Using ARs meristem we obtained high-quality chromosome spreads for Morus alba, Broussonetia papyrifera, Lolium multiflorum, Sorghum sudanense, S. propinquum, S. bicolor × S. sudanense, Zea mays, Z. mexicana, Glycine max, Medicago sativa, and Brassica napus. The results reported here demonstrate that layering is an alternative and effective method for producing meristematic cells for high-quality chromosome preparation in plant species producing ARs. We aimed to evaluate the effect of black soybean extract cream (BSEC) on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced dermatitis in murine models mimicking inflammatory dermatitis observed in humans. In this DNCB-induced model, BALB/c mice were spread with 100 μL of 2% DNCB twice a week for two weeks to induce skin inflammation on the shaved back skin; then, a placebo or BSEC that consisted of the volatile fraction derived from the seeds of Glycine max (L.) Merr. was applied to the DNCB-sensitized mice for 7 days. Gross visual analysis was conducted to assess the impact of BSEC on dermatitis, and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was subsequently performed to detect inflammatory cytokines in the presence or absence of BSEC after DNCB sensitization. Lastly, the possible mechanisms responsible for the effects of BSEC on inflammatory dermatitis were investigated in a human leukemia monocytic cell line, THP-1. Our study showed that BSEC displayed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. BSEC has the ability to diminish dermatitis, and all three experiments demonstrated that BSEC effectively reduced the progression of dermatitis while significantly suppressing inflammatory responses in the preclinical models. Chalcones, including 4′-hydroxychalcones, have garnered significant attention in the area of drug discovery due to their diverse pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticancer effects. However, their low water solubility and bioavailability limit their efficacy in vivo. Glycosylation presents a promising approach to enhance the water solubility, stability, and metabolic properties of chalcones. This study investigates the enzymatic glycosylation of eight chemically synthesized 4′-hydroxychalcones using a diverse set of sugar glucosyltransferases from bacterial, plant, and fungal sources, alongside Glycine max sucrose synthase (GmSuSy) in a cascade reaction. Among the tested enzymes, five exhibited a remarkable versatility for glycoside production, and for large-scale biotransformation, flavonoid 7-O-glucosyltransferase Sbaic7OGT from Scutellaria baicalensis was selected as the most effective. As a result of the experiments conducted, eight trans-chalcone glycosides were obtained. During the purification of the reaction products, we also observed the isomerization of the products by simple sunlight exposure, which resulted in eight additional cis-chalcone glycosides. This study highlights the novel use of a cascade reaction involving Glycine max sucrose synthase (GmSuSy) for the efficient glycosylation of trans-4′-hydroxychalcones, alongside the unexpected discovery of cis-chalcone glycosides during the purification process. Genes involved in iron deficiency responses have been well characterized in Arabidopsis thaliana, but their roles in crop species have not been well explored. Reliance on model species may fail to identify novel iron stress mechanisms present within crop species, likely selected by hundreds of years of selection. Fiskeby III (PI 438471) is a soybean line from Sweden that demonstrates high levels of resilience to numerous stresses. Earlier Fiskeby III studies have identified a suite of genes responding to iron deficiency stress in Fiskeby III that are also associated with Arabidopsis iron deficiency responses. We were interested in determining how canonical iron genes function in Fiskeby III under normal and iron stress conditions. To investigate this, we used virus-induced gene silencing to knock down gene expression of three iron deficiency response genes (FER-like iron deficiency induced transcription factor (FIT), elongated hypocotyl 5 (HY5) and popeye (PYE)) in Fiskeby III. Analyses of RNAseq data generated from silenced plants in iron-sufficient and -deficient conditions found silencing FIT and HY5 altered general stress responses but did not impact iron deficiency tolerance, confirming Fiskeby III utilizes novel mechanisms to tolerate iron deficiency stress. Technological advances have dramatically improved precision agriculture, and accurate crop classification is a key aspect of precision agriculture (PA). The flexibility and real-time nature of UAVs have led them to become an important tool for acquiring agricultural data and enabling precise crop classification. Currently, crop identification relies heavily on complex high-precision models that often struggle to provide real-time performance. Research on lightweight models specifically for crop classification is also limited. In this paper, we propose a crop classification method based on UAV visible-light images based on PP-LiteSeg, a lightweight model proposed by Baidu. To improve the accuracy, a pyramid pooling module is designed in this paper, which integrates adaptive mean pooling and CSPC (Convolutional Spatial Pyramid Pooling) techniques to handle high-resolution features. In addition, a sparse self-attention mechanism is employed to help the model pay more attention to locally important semantic regions in the image. The combination of adaptive average pooling and the sparse self-attention mechanism can better handle different levels of contextual information. To train the model, a new dataset based on UAV visible-light images including nine categories such as rice, soybean, red bean, wheat, corn, poplar, etc., with a time span of two years was created for accurate crop classification. The experimental results show that the improved model outperforms other models in terms of accuracy and prediction performance, with a MIoU (mean intersection ratio joint) of 94.79%, which is 2.79% better than the original model. Based on the UAV RGB images demonstrated in this paper, the improved model achieves a better balance between real-time performance and accuracy. In conclusion, the method effectively utilizes UAV RGB data and lightweight deep semantic segmentation models to provide valuable insights for crop classification and UAV field monitoring. Context. Black soldier fly larvae are a promising alternative ingredient in poultry feed. They might be able to replace soybean and fishmeal because the have high concentrations of protein and fat, and are also rich in vitamins and minerals, and because partial replacement of soybean and total replacement of fishmeal produce no adverse effect on the growth performance of village chickens. Therefore, they are a suitable replacement for these traditional ingredients in poultry feed. Aims. This study determines the nutritive values of black soldier fly larvae and evaluates the effects of feeding diets containing black soldier fly larvae on the growth performance of village chickens. Methods. Samples of black soldier fly larvae were subjected to proximate analysis before a total of 280 1-day-old village chicks were randomly divided into four groups. All groups were fed a basal diet with partial replacements of corn and soybean with black soldier fly larvae at 0% (Control), 5% (T1), 10% (T2) and 15% (T3) for 70 days. Each treatment group consisted of seven replicates, with 10 birds per replicate. The bodyweights, bodyweight gains and feed conversion rates were determined. Key results. Dry rendered black soldier fly larvae contained 773.0 ± 0.08 g/kg dry matter, 36.1 ± 0.09 g/kg ash, 408.8 ± 0.28 g/kg crude protein, 283.0 ± 0.16 g/kg ether extract and 40.9 ± 0.44 g/kg crude fibre. The larvae also contained 2.041 MJ/kg of metabolisable energy, 20.4 g/kg of calcium and adequate concentrations of vitamins. The feeding trial showed an average bodyweight gain of 1231.45 ± 23.37 g and feed conversion ratio of 2.03 ± 0.15, which were most efficient with Diet T3. Conclusions. Inclusion of 15% black soldier fly larvae in diets can enhance the growth performance of village chickens without adverse effects. Implications. Partial replacement of soybean and total replacement of fishmeal in the diet of chickens by black soldier fly larvae are not affecting the growth performance of village chickens but might reduce the feed cost. The existence of sufficient genetic variability and knowing the suitable selection criterion ranges are indispensable requirements of breeding studies. This study aimed to explore genetic diversity in ten F 2 populations (heterozygous–heterogeneous), five parents, and three commercial check cultivars by multivariate methods and to predict useful selection ranges using a decision tree model for further breeding studies. Hybridizations were made in 2019, F 1 populations were grown, and F 2 seeds were obtained in 2020. Genotypes were grown according to an Augmented Randomized Complete-Block Design in 2021 at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Agriculture. Results revealed considerable genetic diversity and transgressive segregation in key characteristics across the F 2 populations. Seed yields of F 2 plants are higher than those of the parents. The seed protein and oil content of the F 2 plants were not different from the parents and commercial checks. Higher phenotypic than genotypic variance indicated a high influence of environment on the inheritance of all studied characteristics. The highest broad heritability was observed in the number of shattered pods per plant (94.81 %) and the lowest in infertile pods per plant (2.16 %). Seed yield showed a significant and positive genotypic correlation with the number of fertile pods per plant (0.61**) and a significant negative association with the number of fertile branches per plant (−0.53**). Principal component analysis (PCA) of 14 quantitative characteristics showed that soybean genotypes separated by the first four components contributed 71.12 % of total genetic variation, with important yield-attributing characteristics present in PC1 and PC3, while important seed quality characteristics were noted in PC2. The decision tree model indicated that genotypes with high yield and optimum quality could be obtained by selecting the number of fertile pods 87–119 per plant and a hundred-seed weight greater than 14.55 g. This study determined the allelopathic potential of Rhododendron arboreum Sm. on the germination and growth of 4-crops (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn., Echinochloa frumentacea Link, Glycine max (L.) Merr. and Vigna umbellata (Thunb.) Ohwi & H. Ohashi) of Garhwal Himalaya. Both in-vitro and pot culture bioassays were conducted to evaluate the impact of leaf and bark aqueous extracts (2 %, 5 % and 10 %) on germination (%), mean germination time (MGT), germination index (GI), and root and shoot growth of test crops. The crop species had significant and variable impacts on germination and growth parameters in both in-vitro and pot-culture bioassays. In contrast, extract types greatly influenced these parameters under in-vitro conditions than in pot culture. Under in-vitro conditions, leaf extracts significantly inhibited the germination and seedling development of Eleusine coracana and Glycine max, with reductions in radicle and plumule length. Bark extracts exhibited both inhibitory as well as stimulatory effect on germination and growth. In pot culture, both extract types elicited variable germination responses in all crops. Stimulatory effects on root and shoot growth were observed in V. umbellata and E. frumentacea. E. coracana showed inhibition in shoot growth but stimulation in root growth, while in G. max root and shoot development was inhibited. The allelopathic effects of R. arboreum extracts both inhibited and stimulated crop growth depending on extract concentration and crop type. R. arboreum longer-term interactions enhanced the growth of V. umbellata and E. frumentacea. Further research is needed to identify the specific allelochemicals involved and their mechanisms of action and to explore the broader ecological and agricultural implications of these interactions. Soybean (Glycine max) is the world's most cultivated legume; currently, most of its varieties are Bt. Spodoptera spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are important pests of soybean. An artificial neural network (ANN) is an artificial intelligence tool that can be used in the study of spatiotemporal dynamics of pest populations. Thus, this work aims to determine ANN to identify population regulation factors of Spodoptera spp. and predict its density in Bt soybean. For two years, the density of Spodoptera spp. caterpillars, predators, and parasitoids, climate data, and plant age was evaluated in commercial soybean fields. The selected ANN was the one with the weather data from 25 days before the pest's density evaluation. ANN forecasting and pest densities in soybean fields presented a correlation of 0.863. It was found that higher densities of the pest occurred in dry seasons, with less wind, higher atmospheric pressure and with increasing plant age. Pest density increased with the increase in temperature until this curve reached its maximum value. ANN forecasting and pest densities in soybean fields in different years, seasons, and stages of plant development were similar. Therefore, this ANN is promising to be implemented into integrated pest management programs in soybean fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: Desiccation-stage transcription factors perform similar functions, with early ones focused on desiccation tolerance and later ones on development. Gene networks governing late embryo development diverge between soybean and Arabidopsis. To understand gene activities programming seed embryo development, we profiled the soybean embryo transcriptome across embryonic morphogenesis through post-germination. Transcriptomic landscapes across embryo development feature highly prevalent transcripts, categorized into early and late groups, with shared and distinct functions. During the mid-storage reserve accumulation stage, the upregulated genes are enriched with regulatory tasks at both the transcriptional and chromatin levels, including DNA methylation and chromatin remodeling. The epigenetic-related functions also dominate in the upregulated genes during germination, involving core histone variants and histone chaperones. Gene network analysis reveals both stage-specific modules and modules active across multiple stages. The desiccation-associated gene module integrates diverse transcription factors (TFs) that are sequentially active during different desiccation stages, transitioning from abiotic stress functions early on to developmental functions later. Two TFs, active during the early and mid-desiccation stages were functionally assessed in Arabidopsis overexpression lines to uncover their potential roles in desiccation processes. Interestingly, nearly half of the Arabidopsis orthologs of soybean TFs active in the desiccation-associated module are inactive during Arabidopsis desiccation. Our results reveal that chromatin and transcriptional regulation coordinate during mid-storage reserve accumulation, while distinct epigenetic mechanisms drive germination. Additionally, gene modules either perform stage-specific functions or are required across multiple stages, and gene networks during late embryogenesis diverge between soybean and Arabidopsis. Plant‐based meat is projected to address world‐wide meat shortage and supply–demand imbalances, potentially promoting the growth of sustainable diet choices. Soybean is a key ingredient to produce this alternative food, but the off‐flavours that naturally occur in soy can hinder its widespread acceptance among consumers. This review extensively elaborates on the primary compounds responsible for off‐flavours, their formation mechanisms, and removal techniques. Lipoxygenase oxidation–reduction, oleosins removal, adjustment extrusion conditions, and β‐cyclodextrin treatment were discussed. Fermentation mechanisms, solvent extraction, enzymes hydrolysis, flavouring, and controlling storage conditions were summarised. The most crucial, safe, and effective techniques were enzyme restriction, β‐cyclodextrin treatment in conjugation with phospholipase A2, and modification of the extrusion condition. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), identified as an invasive pest worldwide, has severely threatened agricultural production and food security in India. To formulate eco‐friendly integrated pest management strategies for S. frugiperda in its new invasive habitat, the basic knowledge about demographic parameters and damage potential of this pest is crucial. The effects of five host crops viz. maize (Zea mays L.), popcorn (Zea mays everta Sturt), sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.)) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) on the development and food consumption of S. frugiperda were examined. Population projection curves based on life table and consumption rates were drawn on different hosts using computer simulation.The pre‐adult development of S. frugiperda was fastest on popcorn (28.02 days), maize (28.04 days) and sweet corn (28.31 days) but slowest on soybean (34.83 days). The highest net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were observed on maize. The feeding potential of S. frugiperda was also highest on maize. The maximum consumption of the sixth larval instar was observed on maize (19470.47 mm2) while lowest on soybean (9033.67 mm2). In the simulation period of 90 days, the fastest growth of S. frugiperda was expected on maize, popcorn and sweet corn while the slowest on soybean.High larval and pupal survival recorded on the non‐maize hosts (sorghum and soybean) reflects that fall armyworm could be an obstacle in their production as well as in the success of maize‐soybean intercropping system. Simulations based on age‐stage, two‐sex life table could be helpful in predicting the most appropriate time for the pesticide application as well as augmentative releases of egg and larval parasitoids for the control of fall armyworm. Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.), one of the top 10 crops produced worldwide, is a significant dietary source of isoflavones. Understanding the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of soy isoflavones (SIs) is important fgor comprehending their various bioactivities in the human body. In vitro approaches can provide valuable insights into the bioavailability of SIs across food matrices and their step-by-step digestive mechanisms. This review focused on evaluating reports that employ invitro methods to study the bioavailability of SIs, using human-simulated gastrointestinal digestive system models and the Transwell system with Caco-2 cell monolayers. Specifically, this review discusses how the molecular structures of SIs influence their bioaccessibility and bioavailability. The differences in bioaccessibility and bioavailability of SI aglycones and their conjugated SIs indicate that the molecular structure is a critical factor influencing the bioactivities of SIs. Efficient soybean mapping is critical for agricultural production and yield prediction. However, current sample-driven soybean mapping methods heavily rely on large representative sample datasets, limiting the interpretability of physical mechanisms. Besides, sample-free methods failed to exploit key features that differentiate soybean from other crops, especially Chlorophyll content. Misclassification errors persist and spatiotemporal generalization remains limited. Therefore, this study develops a novel Soybean Mapping Composite Index (SMCI) within a precise Global Optimal Time Window (GOTW). It integrates unique features of soybean Chlorophyll content, canopy water content, and canopy greenness by coupling three red-edge bands (RE2, RE3, and RE4), one near-infrared band, one shortwave infrared band, and two feature indices (Enhanced Vegetation Index and Green Chlorophyll Vegetation Index). The novel index was applied to soybean mapping at six sites in four major soybean producing countries (China, Argentina, Brazil, and the United States) from 2019 to 2021, using an optimal threshold of 3.25. Within the GOTW, the index responds better to spectral features and improves soybean separability. The average overall accuracy (OA: 91%) and average Kappa coefficient (Kappa: 0.83) for the novel index at all sites outperformed the traditional sample-driven Random Forest (RF) method (OA: 84%, Kappa: 0.70) and the existing sample-free index-based Greenness and Water Content Composite Index (GWCCI) (OA: 81%, Kappa: 0.64). Furthermore, interannual transfer experiments consistently showed high accuracy, demonstrating robust spatiotemporal transferability. Though corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are widely grown and readily accepted into commodity markets and biofuel facilities, heavy reliance on seeds of those two crops for bioenergy production has been linked to environmental degradation, including nutrient discharge to water, and to constraints on food production. Alternative biofuel feedstock systems might better address this "food–energy–environment trilemma." Using data from a 9‐ha field experiment in Iowa, we evaluated yields from a 14‐year period for four bioenergy feedstock systems: stover harvested from corn grown with and without an unharvested rye cover crop, and prairie vegetation grown with and without fertilizer. We also assessed sub‐surface drainage flows and NO3‐N concentrations and discharges in leachate from those cropping systems. The continuous corn systems produced mean grain yields of 11.0–11.5 Mg ha−1 year−1, while also yielding about 4 Mg ha−1 year−1 of stover. Mean harvested biomass from the fertilized prairie was 83% greater than from the unfertilized prairie and was superior to stover production in the two corn treatments in 11 out of 14 years. Nitrate‐N losses in drainage water from the corn systems averaged 12–14 kg NO3‐N ha−1 year−1, whereas both the fertilized and unfertilized prairie systems almost eliminated NO3‐N loss. Cover cropping with rye reduced NO3‐N loss in only one out of 13 years and had variable effects on corn yield. Adoption of prairie‐based biofuel systems might be driven by placing perennial feedstocks on environmentally sensitive sub‐field areas and by government policies that favor perennial feedstocks over annual crops like corn. This manuscript is a follow‐up of previously published results that presented findings on pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) establishment and agronomics in response to previous corn (Zea mays L.) relative maturity (CRM) hybrids grown for grain and silage in the corn–pennycress–soybean [Glycine max (L.)] rotations. In this manuscript, we compared the economics of grain corn–pennycress–soybean rotations (grain rotation) with silage corn–pennycress–soybean rotations (silage rotation). The treatments were CRM hybrids ranging from 76 to 95 days (full season) at northern sites (Morris and Rosemount, MN) and 95 to 113 days (full season) at southern sites (Lexington, IL, and Custar, OH). Full‐season corn harvested for silage was included as a control treatment representing optimum conditions for sowing pennycress. A partial budget procedure was used for economic analysis. The results showed that the annualized net benefits (ANBs) ranged from $315 to $945 ha−1. The silage rotation produced greater ANBs than the grain rotation at all sites due to increased pennycress seed yield. In the grain rotation, the 105 days in the south, 95 days corn at Morris, and 86 days corn at Rosemount resulted in minimal ANB losses compared with silage rotation. Among grain corn treatments, some of the early CRM hybrids resulted in greater ANBs (up to 40%) than the full season hybrid. Results demonstrate potential to integrate pennycress into a grain rotation using early CRM hybrids. In addition, valuing the diverse ecosystem benefits that pennycress offers as a cash cover crop during the offseason between corn and soybean rotation may help to attract growers. Diversified crop rotations with no‐till management are considered fundamental to sustainable agroecosystems; however, associated uncertainty in economic returns may hinder farmers' decisions to adopt these practices. The objectives of this study were to compare economic performance (gross revenue, net revenue, and production cost) among various low‐input diversified versus conventional crop rotations. The experiment was initiated in the fall of 2000 with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) planting and planting of remaining crops in the spring of 2001 near Brookings, SD. Economic analysis was performed from data collected during the fifth complete 4‐year crop rotational cycle (2017–2020) of six crop rotations: (1) 4‐year corn (Zea mays L.)‐soybean [Glycine max L. (Merr.)]‐spring wheat‐sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) (CSSwSf), (2) 4 year corn‐soybean‐spring wheat‐pea (Pisum sativum L.) (CSSwP), (3) 4‐year corn‐pea‐winter wheat‐soybean (CPWwS), (4) 4‐year corn‐oat (Avena sativa L.)‐winter wheat‐soybean (COWwS), (5) 2‐year corn‐soybean (CS), and (6) continuous corn (CCC, treatment initiated in 2017). Corn yield in CSSwP rotation, where corn followed peas, was higher (p < 0.05) by 20%, 25%, 45%, and 89%, compared to CPWwS, CSSwSf, CS, and CCC rotations, respectively. Similarly, soybean yield following winter wheat was significantly higher by 16%–38% in COWwS and 13%–38% in CPWwS compared to CSSwP, CSSwSf, and CS. Overall, diversified crop rotations improved both corn and soybean yield and net revenue compared to 2‐year CS and monoculture CCC rotations. Moreover, 4‐year diversified systems, specifically COWwS, CPWwS, and CSSwP, demonstrated economic resilience by maintaining stable production costs. Preharvest yield estimates can be used for harvest planning, marketing, and prescribing in‐season fertilizer and pesticide applications. One approach that is being widely tested is the use of machine learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to estimate yields. However, one barrier to the adoption of this approach is that ML/AI algorithms behave as a black block. An alternative approach is to create an algorithm using Bayesian statistics. In Bayesian statistics, prior information is used to help create the algorithm. However, algorithms based on Bayesian statistics are not often computationally efficient. The objective of the current study was to compare the accuracy and computational efficiency of four Bayesian models that used different assumptions to reduce the execution time. In this paper, the Bayesian multiple linear regression (BLR), Bayesian spatial, Bayesian skewed spatial regression, and the Bayesian nearest neighbor Gaussian process (NNGP) models were compared with ML non‐Bayesian random forest model. In this analysis, soybean (Glycine max) yields were the response variable (y), and spaced‐based blue, green, red, and near‐infrared reflectance that was measured with the PlanetScope satellite were the predictor (x). Among the models tested, the Bayesian (NNGP; R2‐testing = 0.485) model, which captures the short‐range correlation, outperformed the (BLR; R2‐testing = 0.02), Bayesian spatial regression (SRM; R2‐testing = 0.087), and Bayesian skewed spatial regression (sSRM; R2‐testing = 0.236) models. However, associated with improved accuracy was an increase in run time from 534 s for the BLR model to 2047 s for the NNGP model. These data show that relatively accurate within‐field yield estimates can be obtained without sacrificing computational efficiency and that the coefficients have biological meaning. However, all Bayesian models had lower R2 values and higher execution times than the random forest model. Cellulosic biomass‐to‐bioenergy systems provide fuel, reduce emissions, and offer economic benefits. Corn (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) residues could be used as feedstocks for biofuel production. However, the impact of residue removal on crop productivity in the Mid‐Atlantic region has not been thoroughly assessed. A trial was conducted to assess crop yield and quality response to different biomass retention rates in grain cropping systems during 2015–2017. Various combinations of corn stover (0–10 Mg ha−1) and wheat straw (0–3 Mg ha−1) were applied in a corn–wheat/soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation in New Kent, VA. In Blacksburg, VA, corn stover (0–20 Mg ha−1) was applied in the continuous corn system. Residues were applied after grain harvest over two production cycles for each system. Residue retention showed no significant impact on grain or crop residue yields or nutrient uptake in either system. Treatment minimally impacted feedstock quality, except wheat straw's sulfur (S) concentration, optimized at around 70% retention in New Kent. Theoretical ethanol potential (TEP) and yield remained unaffected by total residue rates in New Kent. In Blacksburg, over 2 years, a minimum TEP for corn stover corresponded to a retention rate of approximately 30%. A retention rate of more than 30% increased TEP, likely due to improved feedstock quality. Nutrient replacement costs for primary macronutrients and S uptake ranged from $18.3 to $36.9 ha−1 for corn stover and $6.1 to $11.8 ha−1 for wheat straw. Residue harvest or addition did not harm short‐term biomass yield in Virginia's grain‐based cropping systems. The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors play crucial roles in plant resistance to environmental challenges, but the biological functions of soybean bZIP members are still unclear. In this study, a drought-related soybean bZIP gene, GmTRAB1, was analyzed. The transcript of GmTRAB1 was upregulated under drought, ABA, and oxidative stresses. Overexpression of GmTRAB1 improved the osmotic stress tolerance of transgenic Arabidopsis and soybean hairy roots associated with increased proline content and activity of antioxidant enzymes and reduced accumulations of malonaldehyde and reactive oxide species. However, RNA interference silencing of GmTRAB1 in the soybean hairy roots improved drought sensitivity. Furthermore, GmTRAB1 increased the sensitivity of transgenic plants to ABA and participated in modulating ABA-regulated stomatal closure upon drought stress. In addition, GmTRAB1 stimulated the transcript accumulation of drought-, ABA-, and antioxidant-related genes to respond to drought. The soybean (Glycine max) is a globally important crop due to its high protein and oil content, which serves as a key resource for human and animal nutrition, as well as bioenergy production. This review assesses recent advancements in soybean genetic improvement by conducting an extensive literature analysis focusing on enhancing resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, improving nutritional profiles, and optimizing yield. We also describe the progress in breeding techniques, including traditional approaches, marker-assisted selection, and biotechnological innovations such as genetic engineering and genome editing. The development of transgenic soybean cultivars through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and biolistic methods aims to introduce traits such as herbicide resistance, pest tolerance, and improved oil composition. However, challenges remain, particularly with respect to genotype recalcitrance to transformation, plant regeneration, and regulatory hurdles. In addition, we examined how wild soybean germplasm and polyploidy contribute to expanding genetic diversity as well as the influence of epigenetic processes and microbiome on stress tolerance. These genetic innovations are crucial for addressing the increasing global demand for soybeans, while mitigating the effects of climate change and environmental stressors. The integration of molecular breeding strategies with sustainable agricultural practices offers a pathway for developing more resilient and productive soybean varieties, thereby contributing to global food security and agricultural sustainability. Soybean, an important cash crop, is often affected by soil salinity, which is one of the important types of abiotic stress that affects its growth. Poly (acrylic) acid coated Mn3O4 (PMO) has been reported to play a vital role in defending against a variety of abiotic stresses in plants. To date, the effects of PMOs on soybean have not been reported; this study explored the mechanism of PMO-enhanced soybean germination under salt stress. In this experiment, 100 mg/L PMO was used as an immersion agent with a salt treatment of 150 mM NaCl. The results showed that when compared with the PMO treatment, salt stress significantly decreased the germination rate, fresh weight, carbohydrate content, and antioxidant enzyme activity of soybean and significantly increased the contents of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and osmoregulatory substances. However, PMO treatment enhanced the antioxidant defense system and significantly reduced the malondialdehyde content of soybean. Moreover, the activities of H+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase were significantly higher in treated soybean than in the control, and the content of ATP was also higher in treated soybean than in the control. Generally, PMO regulates the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species and reduces ATP consumption, thereby improving the ability of soybeans to germinate under salt stress. Main conclusion: Despite modulating senescence and drought responses, the GmERD15-like subfamily members are differentially induced by multiple stresses and diverge partially in stress signaling functions. The PAM2 motif represents a binding site for poly (A)-binding proteins (PABPs), often associated with RNA metabolism regulation. The PAM2-containing protein ERD15 stands out as a critical regulator of diverse stress responses in plants. Despite the relevance of the PAM2 motif, a comprehensive analysis of the PAM2 superfamily and ERD15-like subfamily in the plant kingdom is lacking. Here, we provide an extensive in silico analysis of the PAM2 superfamily and the ERD15-like subfamily in soybean, using Arabidopsis and rice sequences as prototypes. The Glycine max ERD15-like subfamily members were clustered in pairs, likely originating from DNA-based gene duplication, as the paralogs display high sequence conservation, similar exon/intron genome organization, and are undergoing purifying selection. Complementation analyses of an aterd15 mutant demonstrated that the plant ERD15-like subfamily members are functionally redundant in response to drought, osmotic stress, and dark-induced senescence. Nevertheless, the soybean members displayed differential expression profiles, biochemical activity, and subcellular localization, consistent with functional diversification. The expression profiles of Glyma04G138600 under salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments differed oppositely from those of the other GmERD15-like genes. Abiotic stress-induced coexpression analysis with soybean PABPs showed that Glyma04G138600 was clustered separately from other GmERD15s. In contrast to the AtERD15 stress-induced nuclear redistribution, Glyma04G138600 and Glyma02G260800 localized to the cytoplasm, while Glyma03G131900 fractionated between the cytoplasm and nucleus under normal and stress conditions. These data collectively indicate that despite modulating senescence and drought responses, the GmERD15-like subfamily members are differentially induced by multiple stresses and may diverge partially in stress signaling functions. Introduction: Plants are inherently connected with the microbiome, which plays a crucial role in regulating various host plant biological processes, including immunity, nutrient acquisition, and resistance against abiotic and biotic stresses. Many factors affect the interaction between plants and microbiome. Methods and results: In this study, microbiome samples were collected from five niches (bulk soil, rhizoplane, root endosphere, phylloplane, and leaf endosphere) across four developmental stages (seedling, flowering, podding, and maturity) of various soybean varieties. Composition and structure of bacterial and fungal communities were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene and ITS (Internally Transcribed Spacer) region amplicon sequencing. It was observed that both niches and developmental stages significantly impact on the assembly and composition of soybean microbiome. However, variety, presence of a transgene, and glyphosate application had minimal effects on microbial communities. The dominant microbiome varied across the five niches, with most containing beneficial microbial communities capable of promoting plant growth or increasing disease resistance. Types and abundance of the dominant microbes affected network stability, potentially resulting in functional changes in different ecological niches. Conclusion: This study provides theoretical evidence for microbial protection of plants against diseases and demonstrates that systematic analysis of the composition and diversity of soybean microbiomes can contribute to the development of biological control technologies.
