Summary: Background: Prior studies have reported lower effectiveness of XBB.1.5-adapted vaccines against hospitalization related to the Omicron JN.1 variant than the XBB variant. This study evaluated the effectiveness and durability of the BNT162b2 XBB.1.5-adapted vaccine against JN.1-related hospitalization during the 2023–2024 season in Europe. Methods: A test-negative case–control study was carried out in adults (≥18 y) hospitalized between 2 October 2023 and 2 April 2024 with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) within the id.DRIVE partnership. This study included nine sites across Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Cases had a laboratory-confirmed JN.1 infection or a positive SARS-CoV-2 test with symptom onset during JN.1 predominance; controls had a negative SARS-CoV-2 test and symptom onset during JN.1 predominance. The primary objective was to estimate BNT162b2 XBB.1.5-adapted vaccine effectiveness (VE) against COVID-19 hospitalization. One case was matched with up to four controls, according to symptom onset date and site. Multivariable analyses were adjusted for symptom onset date, age, sex, and number of chronic conditions. Findings: Among 308 test-positive cases and 1117 test-negative controls, BNT162b2 XBB.1.5-adapted VE against hospitalization compared to no vaccination this season was 53.8% (95% CI 38.4–65.4) after a median of 63 days following vaccination. Abstract When the Indian government declared the first lockdown on 25 March 2020 to control the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, people were forced to stay and work from home. The aim of this study is to quantify the impact of stay-at-home orders on residential Air Conditioning (AC) energy and household electricity consumption (excluding AC energy). This was done using monitored data from 380 homes in a group of five buildings in Hyderabad, India. We gathered AC energy and household electricity consumption data at a 30-min interval for each home individually in April 2019 and April 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was done on this data. To offset the difference in temperatures for the month of April in 2019 and 2020, only those weekdays were selected where the average temperature in 2019 was same as the average temperature in 2020. The study establishes that the average number of hours the AC was used per day in each home increased in the range 4.90–7.45% depending on the temperature for the year 2020. Correspondingly, the overall AC consumption increased in the range 3.60–4.5%, however the daytime (8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) AC energy consumption increased in the range 22–26% and nighttime (8:00 PM to 8:00 AM) AC energy consumption decreased by 5–7% in the year 2020. The study showed a rise in household electricity consumption of about 15% for the entire day in the year 2020. The household electricity consumption increased during daytime by 22- 27.50% and 1.90- 6.6% during the nighttime. It was observed that the morning household electricity peak demand shifted from 7:00 AM in 2019 to 9:00 AM in 2020. Conversely, the evening peak demand shifted from 9:00 PM in 2019 to 7:00 PM in 2020. An additional peak was observed during afternoon hours in the lockdown.

Summary: Background: The emergence of COVID-19 and public health measures implemented to reduce SARS-CoV-2 infections have both affected acute lower respiratory tract disease (aLRTD) epidemiology and incidence trends. The severity of COVID-19 and non-SARS-CoV-2 aLRTD during this period have not been compared in detail. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of adults age ≥18 years admitted to either of two acute care hospitals in Bristol, UK, from August 2020 to November 2021. Patients were included if they presented with signs or symptoms of aLRTD (e.g., cough, pleurisy), or a clinical or radiological aLRTD diagnosis. Findings: 12,557 adult aLRTD hospitalisations occurred: 10,087 were associated with infection (pneumonia or non-pneumonic lower respiratory tract infection [NP-LRTI]), 2161 with no infective cause, with 306 providing a minimal surveillance dataset. Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection accounted for 32% (3178/10,087) of respiratory infections. Annual incidences of overall, COVID-19, and non- SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia were 714.1, 264.2, and 449.9, and NP-LRTI were 346.2, 43.8, and 302.4 per 100,000 adults, respectively. Weekly incidence trends in COVID-19 aLRTD showed large surges (median 6.5 [IQR 0.7–10.2] admissions per 100,000 adults per week), while other infective aLRTD events were more stable (median 14.3 [IQR 12.8–16.4] admissions per 100,000 adults per week) as were non-infective aLRTD events (median 4.4 [IQR 3.5–5.5] admissions per 100,000 adults per week). Interpretation: While COVID-19 disease was a large component of total aLRTD during this pandemic period, non- SARS-CoV-2 infection still caused the majority of respiratory infection hospitalisations. COVID-19 disease showed significant temporal fluctuations in frequency, which were less apparent in non-SARS-CoV-2 infection. ContextHypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor related to increased mortality in acromegaly. Surgical cure of acromegaly is associated with improvement in blood pressure levels, however little is known about the effect of pegvisomant (PEGV) treatment in patients with hypertension. This analysis evaluates outcomes in patients with hypertension and acromegaly included in ACROSTUDY.MethodsACROSTUDY is a global non-interventional surveillance study of long-term treatment with PEGV, monitoring its safety and efficacy. The cohort was retrospectively divided in two subgroups: patients with and without hypertension. Stepwise logistic regression and Kaplan-Meyer analyses were performed for testing predictors of mortality.ResultsThe total cohort included 2,090 patients with acromegaly treated with PEGV who were followed for a median of 6.8 years (range up to 12.1 years). In ACROSTUDY there were 1,344 patients with hypertension (52.3% males). This subgroup was older, had a higher BMI, and higher prevalence of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) when compared to patients without hypertension.
