Sweetpotato is a resilient food crop with great potential to contribute to reduced hunger in the world. Sweetpotato shows significant potential to contribute to reducing the Global Hunger Index, which reflects deficiencies in calories and micronutrients based on the components of hunger, undernourishment, under-five mortality rate, stunting and wasting. Its genetic diversity has been harnessed through breeding to increase vitamin A, iron, and zinc content, virus resistance and climate resilience for the world's food needs. Africa and India are the most food-insecure regions. The main objectives of this research were to: provide information and a knowledge base on sweetpotato breeding in Africa for biofortification of vitamin A, iron, and zinc, drought tolerance and virus resistance; recommend procedures for generating new breeding populations and varieties; and develop new tools, technologies and methods for sweetpotato improvement. The research was implemented between 2009 and 2020 in 14 collaborating African countries using introduced and local genotypes. The redesigned accelerated breeding scheme resulted in increased genetic gains for vitamin A, iron, zinc contents and virus resistance, and the release by sub-Saharan African countries of 158 varieties; 98 of them orange-fleshed; 55 varieties bred by an accelerated breeding scheme; 27 drought-tolerant and two with enhanced iron and zinc content. Our experience has demonstrated that through the use of more optimized, standardized and collaborative breeding procedures by breeding programs across Africa, it is possible to speed official sweetpotato variety release and contribute to reducing the severe micronutrient deficiencies on the continent.

Purple sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas (L.) genotype) in Southern Africa have a phytonutritional composition and antioxidant properties that can increase incomes and improve nutrition. This study compared the phytonutrient composition and antioxidant properties of four purple-colour sweet potato genotypes (local Purple-purple, '2019-1-1', and USA genotypes, '08-21P' and '16-283P'). These purple sweet potato genotypes were characterised by UPLC/QTOF/MS and 16 phenolic compounds were identified. Purple-purple (very dark purple) showed the highest concentration of cyanidins and peonidin derivatives. Chlorogenic acid derivatives were highest in the genotype '16-283P'. 'Puple-purple' and '16-283P' displayed the strongest antioxidant power and scavenging activities. Diaffeoylquinic acid isomer 1 was identified as the marker candidate for distinguishing the four purple sweet potato genotypes. Southern Africa's highest-protein sweet potato genotypes are Purple-purple (28.81 g/100 g) and '08-21 P' (24.31 g/100 g). A 13.65 g portion of '2019-1-1′ would meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iron for men, while 25.59 g would meet the RDA for children, and 30.72 g would meet the RDA for women. The sweet potato root of genotype '2019-1-1′ provides 31.43 g of Zn per day for children and 22.86 g for adults. The roots of local cultivar Purple-purple can be used as functional food ingredients. Summary: This study investigated the effect of fermentation by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 75 (L75) on the physicochemical properties, survival of L75, sensory, antioxidants and their activities in leaf smoothies of six sweet potato cultivars [Orange‐fleshed (OFSP): 'Bophelo', and 'Beauregard'; cream‐fleshed (CFSP): 'Blesbok' and 'Ndou'; and purple‐fleshed (PFSP): '08.21p' and 'Purple‐purple']. Fermentation significantly affected the physiochemical properties. Fermentation for 24 h improved the carotenoid (TCC), ascorbic acid (AA) (6.8, 6.0 mg 100 g−1) and total phenolic (4435 mg 100 g−1) significantly in, 'Bophelo' smoothies. Whilst 48 h fermentation significantly increased the TCC, AA, organic acids, valine and alanine levels in 'Blesbok' smoothies'. Principal component analysis separated the unfermented 'Bophelo' and Purple‐purple' leaf smoothies from fermented leaf smoothies of OFSP, CSFP, and PFSP. DPPH scavenging activity and alpha‐carotene were effective markers for separating fermented from unfermented leaf smoothies in the variable importance study. Survival of L75 was influenced by fermentation duration and cultivar type. Fermented and unfermented smoothies were equally acceptable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
