The new species of tephritid flies Terellia arailerica sp. n. is described from Armenia (Arailer Mt.). A comparison of phalli of six similar species (T. virens (Loew, 1846), T. uncinata White, 1989, T. zerovae Korneyev, 1985, T. freidbergi V. Korneyev, 2013, T. ivannikovi V. Korneyev et Evstigneev, 2013 и T. odontolophi Korneyev, 1993) is given. These six species have (as well as the new one) entirely hyaline wings and they are associated with plants of the genera Centaurea Linnaeus, 1753 and Psephellus Cassini, 1826. The new species differs from mentioned above taxa in the extremely long tubular extension of glans of the phallus with filaments separating at the apex. The larvae of the new species feed on tissues of the capitula of Centaurea spectabilis (Fisch. & C.A. Mey.) Sch. Bip. and migrate into stem to pupate after feeding process. The migration from the capitulum into the stem depends on the rate of the capitulum drying process. When the capitulum is completely dry, larvae can be observed in the upper part of the stem. If the capitulum is not completely dry yet, larvae are located still inside it

Terellia ptilostemi sp. n., a previously unknown peculiar species of the genus Terellia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is described based on the holotype and a large series of paratypes reared from Ptilostemon rhiphaeus (Pau & Font Quer) Greuter (Asteraceae, Cardueae) in Tétouan and Chefchaouen Provinces of Western Morocco. The new species has the phallus glans typical for species of the Terellia serratulae group, but has an extremely uncommon wing pattern of four black crossbands, whereas the other species of the group have entirely hyaline or slightly infuscated wings. Genus Terellia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 includes approximately 60 species throughout the Palearctic region. Larvae of Terellia develop in the flowerheads of the family Asteraceae. In this study, the authors collected species of Terellia from possible host plants in the summer of 2009 and 2017 in northeastern Turkey using an insect net. Collected materials were pinned and deposited in the Gaziantep University Entomology Laboratory. Upon identification, Terellia (Cerajocera) akguli sp. nov. has been described as a new species and placed in the subgenus Cerajocera. Also, T. (C.) armeniaca Korneyev, 1985 has been recorded for the first time in Turkey with this study. The paper describes new species and presents morphological characteristic figures of the new species. Additionally, the key for the subgenus Cerajocera distributed in Turkey is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is based on the Terellia species collected from 27 provinces of Turkey during 1999-2006. The locality, host plants (including new records), and figures of the wing pattern of each species are given. Allozyme frequencies of 15 enzyme loci, 14 of which were polymorphic, were used to characterize seven Terellia virens populations originating from three allopatrically distributed Centaurea species. The two populations whose origins were geographically furthest apart, from Israel (on C. iberica) and from Switzerland (on C. vallesiaca), showed relatively high values of genetic distance from the 5 populations sampled in Austria and Hungary (on C. maculosa) (Nei's D>0.07). The latter five displayed a high degree of genetic similarity. No diagnostic (fixed) allelic differences were observed between these three groups of T. virens populations, but they could be well characterized by significant differences in allelic frequencies at 9 enzyme loci. Independently of this study, the populations from Switzerland ( C. vallesiaca) and eastern Austria ( C. maculosa) were selected as potential source populations for future introductions into North America for the biological control of introduced C. maculosa and C. diffusa. Based on the observed genetic differences and results from field experiments on the host specificity of these two potential source populations, it is argued that host specificity screening tests should be conducted separately for local (host plant) populations, as such populations might accept a different set of hosts.
