Alternative hypotheses have been proposed regarding how the hormone corticosterone (CORT) mediates energy expenditure during reproduction. Elevated baseline CORT (CORTb) could support daily energy expenditure (DEE), promoting reproductive effort or downregulate costly behaviours in low quality individuals facing allostatic overload.We investigated relationships between CORTb, time activity budgets (TABs), DEE and diving behaviour across 2 years and colonies of little auk (Alle alle), an Arctic seabird in which elevating DEE may support reproduction in the face of climate change.We also explored whether mercury (Hg) contamination might suppress DEE by affecting the hypothalamus‐pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and CORT production.Furthermore, we performed phylogenetically controlled analysis across breeding seabird species to build broader understanding of CORT‐DEE relationships.CORTb positively correlated with little auk activity, DEE and dive duration during a cold year in East Greenland, when CORTb was elevated in the population, but not during a warmer year, or at Svalbard. CORTb did not predict chick provisioning nor did Hg suppress CORTb.Across breeding seabird species, CORTb and DEE were uncorrelated. Rather, contrary to predictions, CORTb was higher in species breeding at lower latitudes.Intraspecific results suggest environment‐dependent relationships between CORTb, behaviour and DEE, with implications for understanding CORTb's role in climate change resiliency.Interspecific analyses suggest absence of correlational selection between CORTb and DEE during reproduction, and that DEE thresholds that induce changes in CORTb might differ between species. Background The aim of this study is to investigate the different approaches to thermal challenges, both cold and warm, used in dynamic infrared thermography for reconstructive surgery, and explore whether it affects the success of preoperative perforator mapping. Methods Literature was collected from Ovid Medline, Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane. The references of the full-text articles located from the original search were also appraised. Thirteen articles were extracted for the final qualitative analysis. A systematic review was then conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Results Thirteen articles looked at a cold challenge, which included airflow cooling, direct contact cooling, and evaporation-based cooling. Two articles investigated warm challenges. One paper used no challenge, suggesting it unnecessary with a highly sensitive camera. All cold challenges were positively supported by a high level of flap perfusion success and/or a high level of correlation with other forms of investigation. Conclusion Cold challenges were overall superior to no challenge and warm challenges; however, this conclusion is limited by the small participant size, the possibility of detection bias, and poor methodology detailing. Airflow cooling—specifically, using a desktop fan to blow air for 2 minutes—was noted to likely cause the least discomfort due to a low cooling capacity yet simultaneously maintain effectiveness and allow for a uniform cooling application. Warm challenges showed less conclusive results and were restricted by lack of studies. Increasing ocean temperatures are causing dysbiosis between coral hosts and their symbionts. Previous work suggests that coral host gene expression responds more strongly to environmental stress compared to their intracellular symbionts; however, the causes and consequences of this phenomenon remain untested. We hypothesized that symbionts are less responsive because hosts modulate symbiont environments to buffer stress. To test this hypothesis, we leveraged the facultative symbiosis between the scleractinian coral Oculina arbuscula and its symbiont Breviolum psygmophilum to characterize gene expression responses of both symbiotic partners in and ex hospite under thermal challenges. To characterize host and in hospite symbiont responses, symbiotic and aposymbiotic O. arbuscula were exposed to three treatments: (1) control (18°C), (2) heat (32°C), and (3) cold (6°C). This experiment was replicated with B. psygmophilum cultured from O. arbuscula to characterize ex hospite symbiont responses. Both thermal challenges elicited classic environmental stress responses (ESRs) in O. arbuscula regardless of symbiotic state, with hosts responding more strongly to cold challenge. Hosts also exhibited stronger responses than in hospite symbionts. In and ex hospite B. psygmophilum both down‐regulated gene ontology pathways associated with photosynthesis under thermal challenge; however, ex hospite symbionts exhibited greater gene expression plasticity and differential expression of genes associated with ESRs. Taken together, these findings suggest that O. arbuscula hosts may buffer environments of B. psygmophilum symbionts; however, we outline the future work needed to confirm this hypothesis. Recently, we found that in ovo feeding of l-leucine (l-Leu) afforded thermotolerance, stimulated lipid metabolism and modified amino acid metabolism in male broiler chicks. However, the effects of in ovo feeding of l-Leu on thermoregulation and growth performance until marketing age of broilers are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of in ovo feeding of l-Leu on body weight (BW) gain under control thermoneutral temperature or chronic heat stress. We measured changes of body temperature and food intake, organ weight, as well as amino acid metabolism and plasma metabolites under acute and chronic heat stress in broilers. A total of 168 fertilized Chunky broiler eggs were randomly divided into 2 treatment groups in experiments. The eggs were in ovo fed with l-Leu (34.5 µmol/500 µl per egg) or sterile water (500 µl/egg) during incubation. After hatching, male broilers were selected and assigned seven to nine replicates (one bird/replicate) in each group for heat challenge experiments. Broilers (29- or 30-day-old) were exposed to acute heat stress (30 ± 1°C) for 120 min or a chronic heat cyclic and continued heat stress (over 30 ± 1°C; ages, 15 to 44 days). In ovo feeding of l-Leu caused a significant suppression of enhanced body temperature without affecting food intake, plasma triacylglycerol, non-esterified fatty acids, ketone bodies, glucose, lactic acid or thyroid hormones under acute heat stress. Daily body temperature was significantly increased by l-Leu in ovo feeding under chronic heat stress. Interestingly, in ovo feeding of l-Leu caused a significantly higher daily BW gain compared with that of the control group under chronic heat stress. Moreover, some essential amino acids, including Leu and isoleucine, were significantly increased in the liver and decreased in the plasma by l-Leu in ovo feeding under acute heat stress. These results suggested that l-Leu in ovo feeding afforded thermotolerance to broilers under acute heat stress mainly through changing amino acid metabolism until marketing age.

Objectives: Skin blood flow is rapidly altered during circulatory shock and may remain altered despite apparent systemic hemodynamic stabilization. We evaluated whether changes in skin blood flow during circulatory shock were related to survival.Design: Prospective study.Setting: Thirty-five-bed medical-surgical university hospital department of intensive care.Subjects: Twenty healthy volunteers and 70 patients with circulatory shock (< 12 hr duration), defined as the need for vasopressors to maintain mean arterial pressure greater than or equal to 65 mm Hg and signs of altered tissue perfusion.Interventions: We assessed skin blood flow using skin laser Doppler on the fingertip for 3 minutes at basal temperature (SBFBT) and at 37°C (SBF37) (thermal challenge test) once in volunteers and at the time of inclusion and after 6, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours in patients with shock. Capillary refill time and peripheral perfusion index were measured at the same time points on the contralateral hand.Measurements and Main Results: The thermal challenge response (ΔSBF/ΔT) was calculated using the following formula: (SBF37-SBFBT)/(37-basal temperature). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated to evaluate variables predictive of ICU mortality. At inclusion, skin blood flow and ΔSBF/ΔT were lower in patients than in volunteers. Baseline skin blood flow (31 [17-113] vs 16 [9-32] arbitrary perfusion units; p = 0.01) and ΔSBF/ΔT (4.3 [1.7-10.9] vs 0.9 [0.4-2.9] arbitrary perfusion unit/s) were greater in survivors than in nonsurvivors. Capillary refill time was shorter in survivors than in nonsurvivors; peripheral perfusion index was similar in the two groups. ΔSBF/ΔT (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.94 [0.88-0.99]) and SBFBT (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.83 [0.73-0.93]) had the best predictive value for ICU mortality with cutoff values less than or equal to 1.25 arbitrary perfusion unit/°C (sensitivity 88%, specificity 89%) and less than or equal to 21 arbitrary perfusion unit (sensitivity 84%, specificity 81%), respectively.Conclusions: Alterations in fingertip skin blood flow can be evaluated using a laser Doppler thermal challenge technique in patients with circulatory shock and are directly related to outcome. Extremes in temperature represent environmental stressors that impact the well-being and economic value of poultry. As homeotherms, young poultry with immature thermoregulatory systems are especially susceptible to thermal extremes. Genetic variation and differences in gene expression resulting from selection for production traits, likely contribute to thermal stress response. This study was designed to investigate in vivo transcriptional changes in the breast muscle of young turkey poults from an unselected randombred line and one selected for 16 wk body weight under hot and cold thermal challenge. Newly hatched turkey poults were brooded for 3 d at one of 3 temperatures: control (35°C), cold (31°C), or hot (39°C). Samples of the pectoralis major were harvested and subjected to deep RNA sequencing. Significant differential gene expression was observed in both growth-selected and randombred birds at both temperature extremes when compared to control-brooded poults. Growth-selected birds responded to thermal stress through changes in genes predicted to have downstream transcriptional effects and that would result in reduced muscle growth. Slower growing randombred birds responded to thermal stress through modulation of lipid-related genes, suggesting reduction in lipid storage, transport, and synthesis, consistent with changes in energy metabolism required to maintain body temperature. It is known that thermal conditioning at an early age results in improved heat tolerance, and reduces mortality when re-exposed to heat in later life in chickens. However, the mechanism of thermal conditioning is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of early thermal conditioning on physiological and behavioral responses in acute heat-exposed chicks. Six-day-old chicks (White Plymouth Rock) were exposed to high temperature at 40°C for 3 h while control chicks were kept at 30°C. Four days after treatment, both groups were challenged to high temperature at 40°C for 15 min. We found that the initiation times for behavioral responses (panting and wing-droop posture) in experienced chicks were later than those in control. At the end of heat-exposure treatment, the rectal temperature in experienced chicks was lower than that in control while there was no difference in respiration rate between the groups. Compared with control, experienced chicks had a lower level of plasma corticosterone. Gene expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, interleukin-6 and lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor were significantly lower in the brain of experienced chicks than in the control chicks. These results suggest that thermal conditioning may change response to subsequent heat exposure by altering the central thermoregulation system, resulting in an alleviation of heat stress.

The current study aimed to investigate whether embryonic temperature manipulation may alter thermal preference throughout the rearing phase of broiler chickens and how this manipulation may affect response to thermal challenge, metabolism, growth rate and feed intake rate. Eggs were exposed to a constant incubation temperature [machine temperatures: 36°C (Low), 37.5°C (Control), and 39°C (High); eggshell temperature of 37.4 ± 0.08°C, 37.8 ± 0.15°C, and 38.8 ± 0.33°C, respectively] from d 13 till hatching. Low treatment chickens showed lower plasma T3 and GH levels at d 1 of age and lower T3 level at d 42 of age compared to the Control treatment. Preferred ambient, rectal temperature, T4 level, growth rate, food intake rate, and response to thermal challenge were not altered in these chickens. On the other hand, High-treatment chickens exhibited high preferred ambient temperature and rectal temperature during the first 2 wk post-hatch, lower plasma T3 level at d 21 and 42 and a delayed increase in respiratory movement in response to thermal challenge compared to the Control treatment. However, chickens subjected to the Control and High treatments did not differ in T4 and GH level and performance. We conclude that exposure to high temperature during late embryonic development has long-lasting effects on the thermoregulatory system of broiler chickens by affecting the heat tolerance of these chickens. Moreover, the preferred ambient temperature of the chickens from heat-treated eggs correspond to those recommended for the strain under study, whereas for the cold-treated and control-chickens it was 1°C below, indicating that incubation temperature might have consequences on the ambient temperature chickens require during the rearing phase. It is broadly accepted that continued global warming will pose a major threat to biodiversity in the 21st century. But how reliable are current projections regarding consequences of future climate change for biodiversity? To address this issue, we review the methodological approaches in published studies of how life in marine and freshwater environments responds to temperature shifts. We analyze and compare observational field surveys and experiments performed either in the laboratory or under natural conditions in the wild, the type of response variables considered, the number of species investigated, study duration, and the nature and magnitude of experimental temperature manipulations. The observed patterns indicate that, due to limitations of study design, ecological and evolutionary responses of individuals, populations, species, and ecosystems to temperature change were in many cases difficult to establish, and causal mechanism(s) often remained ambiguous. We also discovered that the thermal challenge in experimental studies was 10,000 times more severe than reconstructed estimates of past and projections of future warming of the oceans, and that temperature manipulations also tended to increase in magnitude in more recent studies. These findings raise some concerns regarding the extent to which existing research can increase our understanding of how higher temperatures associated with climate change will affect life in aquatic environments. In view of our review findings, we discuss the trade-off between realism and methodological tractability. We also propose a series of suggestions and directions towards developing a scientific agenda for improving the validity and inference space of future research efforts.

The current study investigated the effects of temperature manipulation (TM) during late embryogenesis on temperature preference, response to high environmental temperature, behavior, and performance in young layer chicks. Control (CC) embryos (n =96) were incubated at 37.8°C eggshell temperature throughout incubation. Thermally manipulated embryos (n = 96) were incubated at 37.8°C eggshell temperature throughout incubation and were exposed to 40°C for 4 h/d from embryonic d 14 to 18 (TM chicks). After hatch, chicks from each treatment were divided into 3 subgroups (n = 32 per group) and were subjected to a temperature preference test at d 1, 7, or 33. One day after the temperature preference test, each subgroup was exposed to 1 thermal challenge for 4 h (d 2, 40°C; d 8, 40°C; or d 34, 35°C). Effects of TM on (fearfulness) behavior of chicks were investigated in a tonic immobility test and during home pen observations. Temperature manipulation decreased incubation time with 7 h (P < 0.0001) and body temperature at hatch with 0. °C (P = 0.002). The TM chicks preferred a lower ambient temperature in the temperature preference test (P < 0.05) and showed a higher body temperature response than CC chicks to the thermal challenge at d 2 and 8 (P < 0.05). No effects of TM on behavior and performance were observed. Because most TM studies are conducted in broilers, this study is the first attempt to unravel the effects of TM during late embryogenesis on posthatch environmental adaptation in layer chicks. The results demonstrated that effects of our TM on postnatal temperature preference and response to high environmental temperatures are only found until d 8 of age. This may suggest 1 of 3 options: a) the timing or the level, or both, of TM and duration were not at the sensitive period of embryogenesis or not sufficient, or both, respectively; b) the level of the postnatal thermal challenge was not strong enough to induce a hyper- thermic response; and c) the postnatal effects of TM in layers are limited in time. Abstract: [·] Juvenile Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha survival and behaviour were evaluated during a temperature increase from 8.8 to 23.2°C. [·] Relatively little mortality (12%) occurred, which was unexpected. [·] The percent of fish with an active swimming behaviour increased from 26% to 93% and opercular beat rates increased from 76 to 159 beats per minute. [·] Although sublethal in the laboratory, thermal stress was likely incurred by juvenile salmon in this study and the associated behavioural changes may increase predation potential in the wild. Genetically selecting animals that are heat tolerant can help to maintain production efficiency of the dairy industry under thermal challenges. During the summer months in Canada, dairy cows could be under thermal stress. For instance, in Ontario, cows are expected to be 105 days under thermal stress. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for milk production traits under heat stress in Canadian Holstein cows. A total of 604,050 test-day records for milk, fat, and protein yields from 78,516 first-lactation Holstein cows were used in this study. The production data was combined with daily maximum temperature-humidity index (THI; ranging from 30 to 83) calculated based on meteorological records from public weather stations. In total, 58 weather stations were located within a maximum distance of 20 km from each of the 1,284 herds included in this study. Single-trait random regressions on THI, fitting linear splines to describe the random additive genetic and permanent environmental effects, were used in the genetic analyses. Based on preliminary analyses, the knots of the spline functions were set to THI = 70, 57, and 58 for milk, fat, and protein yields, respectively. Therefore, the models assumed a linear effect of heat stress beyond the THI threshold, allowing to estimate the additive genetic effect under thermal comfort and at different levels of heat stress. The genetic correlations estimated between thermal comfort and heat stress were -0.09, -0.33, and -0.21 for milk, fat, and protein yields, respectively. This indicates an antagonistic relationship between level of production and heat tolerance. However, small differences in heritability estimates were observed above the THI thresholds (they ranged from 0.20 to 0.22 for milk, 0.18 to 0.15 for fat, and 0.14 to 0.15 for protein yields). Abstract: We report a novel observation about breast cancer. We imaged 6 fresh pathological specimens of breast cancer (1 mastectomy and 5 lumpectomies) with a sensitive infrared camera. We found that, following exposure to hot air for 1min, the cancers warmed up much less than the surrounding normal breast with a difference ranging from 12 to 20°C. We believe that this physical property of cancer should be explored and may give us better insight into the nature of cancer, its diagnosis (including intraoperative diagnosis) and targeted treatment.
