8. The Unearned Privilege of Charity Law: How the Law Maintains Elite Education

Abstract

In England and Wales, fee-charging independent schools can be legally classified as charities and, therefore, receive associated benefits, the most obvious being taxation advantages. The high fees charged by many of these schools create financial exclusivity, which, it will be seen, confers significant social and cultural capital to those who can meet the economic barrier to entry. High fees lead to increased wealth for the schools, which is augmented by their charitable fiscal benefits. In exchange for receiving these charitable benefits, one might expect charity law to place significant social contribution requirements on these schools. However, this paper will argue that this is not the case: the law, in fact, requires very little from charitable independent schools. In practice, charity law cannot mitigate inequalities within elite education nor justify their taxation advantages.

10. The Perspectives of People with Intellectual Disabilities on Their Experience of Voting in UK General Elections

Abstract

Background: People with intellectual disabilities' voting rate within the United Kingdom remains significantly below the population average despite government enacted voting promotion measures. No published academic literature directly involves people with intellectual disabilities when considering their UK general election experiences -- this study aims to address this omission. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with people with intellectual disabilities (N = 20) about their election experiences during the 2017 (n = 18) and 2019 (n = 8) general elections. Six participants were interviewed around both elections. Data was analysed with template analysis. Results: Eight themes were produced -- election information, political knowledge, political opinions, voting choice process, polling station experience, voting outcome, capacity and support. Theme interactions impacted on election experiences. Conclusions: While acknowledging diverse experiences, voting outcomes and experiences were particularly impacted by factor interactions concerning election information and/or polling station accessibility, capacity and support. Voting promotion interventions and future research should consider these areas.

20. Incentivizing the Production and Use of Open Educational Resources in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

Substituting open educational resources (OER) for commercially-produced textbooks results in demonstrable cost savings for students in most higher education institutions. Yet OER are still not widely used, and progress toward large-scale adoption in most colleges and universities has been slow. This article reviews the literature informing financial and other issues that affect OER adoption. It describes the outcome of an ongoing, financially self-sustaining project at Athabasca University that has produced significant cost savings for the institution, maintained equivalent student learning outcomes and persistence rates, and enhanced aspects of the student learning experience. Based on the success of the project to date, broadly-applicable recommendations are suggested to reduce organizational impediments to the adoption of OER in higher education institutions.

24. Healthy and unhealthy plant-based diets and the risk of cardiovascular diseases: The Rotterdam study and updated meta-analysis.

Abstract

Consumption of more plant-based foods is gaining popularity, but the role of healthy versus unhealthy plant-based diets in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains inconclusive. We investigated associations of plant-based diet indices (PDIs) with incident CVDs in a prospective cohort study and conducted an updated meta-analysis. We included 3507 men and 5345 women of the population-based Rotterdam Study. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke per SD increment of an overall PDI, healthy PDI (hPDI) and unhealthy PDI (uPDI), among men and women separately. We combined our findings with previously published effect estimates in an updated meta-analysis. We documented 2015 CVD cases (1231 CHD and 952 stroke) during 107,290 person-years follow-up. Among men, the PDI and hPDI were associated with a 7 % (HR 0.93, 95 % CI 0.87–0.99) and 8 % (HR 0.92, 95 % CI 0.86–0.98) lower CVD risk. Among women, there was evidence suggesting a U-shaped association of the PDI with stroke (p non-linearity < 0.01). In meta-analyses including up to 43,067 incident CVD cases among 359,740 participants from nine studies, the PDI and hPDI, were associated with a lower CVD riskand the uPDI with a higher CVD risk (pooled HRs [95 % CI], per SD, PDI: 0.94 [0.91–0.97], I2 = 50.4 %; hPDI: 0.94 [0.91–0.98], I2 = 74.7 %; uPDI: 1.03 [1.01–1.06], I2 = 49.0 %). Our findings support recommendations to consume relatively more healthy plant-based foods for CVD prevention. Potential differences by sex and non-linear associations warrant further investigation. 33. Getting Involved in the Community--What Stops Us? Findings from an Inclusive Research Project

Abstract

Background: Social isolation is an issue that affects many people and especially people with a learning disability. There is an association between social exclusion and feeling lonely, an issue currently highlighted as a growing concern which needs to be addressed both in the media and by the government. Methods: The Building Bridges Research Group do inclusive research projects about the issues that are important to them. Over the summer of 2018, the research group undertook an inclusive research project to identify some of the specific barriers that prevent community inclusion and the opportunity to develop friends. The people involved mainly lived independently and did not use learning disability services, with the exception of evening clubs, so needed to use universal services. Results: Pictorial cards, made by one of the group, using photographs were used to organise the data into themes. These included transport, fear and anxiety, limits on choice and control, risks and personal safety. Conclusion: The inclusive research design enabled people with a learning disability to contribute to all stages of the research project, from identifying the issue, gathering data, the analysis and writing up. They also made suggestions of ways to increase social networks, friendships and well-being and so decrease loneliness. These include more access to easy read information, more support and advocacy and measures to address community safety including a wider roll-out of the Safe Places scheme. There also needs to be further research undertaken with other people with a learning disability in different areas to widen the understanding of the impact of these barriers on people's lives.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: We investigated the potential impact of antihypertensive drugs for atrial fibrillation (AF) prevention through a drug target Mendelian randomization study to avoid the potential limitations of clinical studies. METHODS: Validated published single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that mimic the action of 12 antihypertensive drug classes, including alpha-adrenoceptor blockers, adrenergic neuron blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor blockers, beta-adrenoceptor blockers, centrally acting antihypertensive drugs, calcium channel blockers, loop diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, renin inhibitors, thiazides and related diuretic agents, and vasodilators were used. We estimated, via their corresponding gene and protein targets, the downstream effect of these drug classes to prevent AF via systolic blood pressure using 2-sample Mendelian randomization analyses. The SNPs were extracted from 2 European genome-wide association studies for the drug classes (n=317 754; n=757 601) and 1 European genome-wide association study for AF (n=1 030 836). RESULTS: Drug target Mendelian randomization analyses supported the significant preventive causal effects of lowering systolic blood pressure per 10 mm Hg via alpha-adrenoceptor blockers (n=11 SNPs; odds ratio [OR], 0.34 [95% CI, 0.21-0.56]; P=2.74×10-05), beta-adrenoceptor blockers (n=17 SNPs; OR, 0.52 [95% CI, 0.35-0.78]; P=1.62×10-03), calcium channel blockers (n=49 SNPs; OR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.36-0.70]; P=4.51×10-05), vasodilators (n=19 SNPs; OR, 0.53 [95% CI, 0.34-0.84]; P=7.03×10-03), and all 12 antihypertensive drug classes combined (n=158 SNPs; OR, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.54-0.77]; P=8.50×10-07) on AF risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that lowering systolic blood pressure via protein targets of various antihypertensive drugs seems promising for AF prevention. 37. Using Machinima as Teaching and Learning Materials: A Nepalese Case Study

Abstract

Machinima, screencast animated videos made in a virtual world, are still not a very well-known phenomenon, and there has been little reseach in relation to their use as a teaching material in English language classrooms. This study aimed to investigate the potential for and challenges in using machinima in the pre-intermediate English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Bespoke machinima were created for three classes in Nepal, and the lessons using them were observed. Two teachers and four students were given semi-structued interviews, and 20 students were asked to write a reflective note on their impression of the use of machinima. The findings of the study indicate that machinima are distinct from other materials in that they can be contextualized to address the needs, interests, and values of the learners. Student engagement is thus found to have been significantly higher.

42. Dosimetric validation of the couch and coil model for high-field MR-linac treatment planning.

Abstract

The precision of the dose delivery in radiation therapy with high-field MR-linacs is challenging due to the substantial variation in the beam attenuation of the patient positioning system (PPS) (the couch and coils) as a function of the gantry angle. This work aimed to compare the attenuation of two PPSs located at two different MR-linac sites through measurements and calculations in the treatment planning system (TPS). Attenuation measurements were performed at every 1° gantry angle at the two sites with a cylindrical water phantom with a Farmer chamber inserted along the rotational axis of the phantom. The phantom was positioned with the chamber reference point (CRP) at the MR-linac isocentre. A compensation strategy was applied to minimise sinusoidal measurement errors due to, e.g. air cavity or setup. A series of tests were performed to assess the sensitivity to measurement uncertainties. The dose to a model of the cylindrical water phantom with the PPS added was calculated in the TPS (Monaco v5.4 as well as in a development version Dev of an upcoming release), for the same gantry angles as for the measurements. The TPS PPS model dependency of the dose calculation voxelisation resolution was also investigated. A comparison of the measured attenuation of the two PPSs yielded differences of less than 0.5% for most gantry angles. The maximum deviation between the attenuation measurements for the two different PPSs exceeded ±1% at two specific gantry angles 115° and 245°, where the beam traverses the most complex PPS structures. The attenuation increases from 0% to 25% in 15° intervals around these angles. The measured and calculated attenuation, as calculated in v5.4, was generally within 1-2% with a systematic overestimation of the attenuation for gantry angles around 180°, as well as a maximum error of 4-5% for a few discrete angles in 10° gantry angle intervals around the complex PPS structures. The PPS modelling was improved compared to v5.4 in Dev, especially around 180°, and the results of those calculations were within ±1%, but with a similar 4% maximum deviation for the most complex PPS structures. Generally, the two tested PPS structures exhibit very similar attenuation as a function of the gantry angle, including the angles with a steep change in attenuation. Both TPS versions, v5.4 and Dev delivered clinically acceptable accuracy of the calculated dose, as the differences in the measurements were overall better than ±2%. 43. The Influence of Working Memory on Reading Comprehension in Vowelized versus Non-Vowelized Arabic

Abstract

Unlike English, short vowel sounds in Arabic are represented by diacritics rather than letters. According to the presence and absence of these vowel diacritics, the Arabic script can be considered more or less transparent in comparison with other orthographies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of working memory to vowelized and non-vowelized reading comprehension and determine whether working memory is more involved in non-vowelized than vowelized reading comprehension. Forty-nine Arabic speaking children from grade six (age 11) undertook two measures of reading comprehension (one vowelized and one non-vowelized). They were also given measures of word reading fluency, vocabulary, phonological awareness, rapid naming and listening span as a measure of working memory. The results indicated that both vowelized and non-vowelized texts were associated with the measure of working memory after controlling for vocabulary, word reading and phonological processing. Although the results are more consistent with common influences of working memory across the two orthographies, slightly larger effects of working memory on non-vowelized reading comprehension suggest that further research, potentially with younger cohorts of Arabic readers would be appropriate. The findings are discussed and future directions for research are suggested.

44. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Reforms 2014: SENCos' Perspectives of the First Six Months

Abstract

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) reforms have been reported as the most significant reforms of their kind for over 30 years. Through the Children and Families Act 2014 the Government is seeking to effect cultural change regarding SEND. The SENCo is responsible for the operational and strategic aspects related to SEND provision within the school and as such could be considered a key implementer of the reforms. This article forms part of a PhD research project which is developing research within the area of SEND policy reform, through exploring and analysing the in-depth experience of the SENCo as a policy implementer during the first academic year post-reform. This article discusses the emerging themes from one of the wider data sets which sought to gather the views of SENCos six months after the introduction of SEND reforms and the SEND Code of Practice.
