1. Early Solar System Turbulence Constrained by High Oxidation States of the Oldest Non-Carbonaceous Planetesimals

Abstract

Early Solar System (SS) planetesimals constitute the parent bodies of most meteorites investigated today. Nucleosynthetic isotope anomalies of bulk meteorites have revealed a dichotomy between non-carbonaceous (NC) and carbonaceous (CC) groups. Planetesimals sampling NC and CC isotopic signatures are conventionally thought to originate from the "dry" inner disk, and volatile-rich outer disk, respectively, with their segregation enforced by a pressure bump close to the water-ice sublimation line, possibly tied to Jupiter's formation. This framework is challenged by emerging evidence that the oldest NC planetesimals (i.e., the iron meteorites parent bodies; IMPBs) were characterized by far higher oxidation states than previously imagined, suggesting abundant ($\gtrsim$ few wt.%) liquid water in their interiors prior to core differentiation. In this paper, we employ a model for a degassing icy planetesimal (heated by $^{26}$Al decay) to map the conditions for liquid water production therein. Our work culminates in threshold characteristic sizes for pebbles composing the said planetesimal, under which water-ice melting occurs. Adopting a model for a disk evolving under both turbulence and magnetohydrodynamic disk winds, and assuming pebble growth is fragmentation-limited, we self-consistently translate the threshold pebble size to lower limits on early SS turbulence. We find that if NC IMPBs were "wet," their constituent pebbles must have been smaller than a few centimeters, corresponding to typical values of the Shakura-Sunyaev $\alpha_{\nu}$ turbulence parameter in excess of $10^{-3}$. These findings argue against a quiescent SS disk (for <10 AU), are concordant with astronomical constraints on protoplanetary disk turbulence, and suggest pebble accretion played a secondary role in building our rocky planets.

Abstract

As the field of Zr stable isotopes is rapidly expanding from the study of mass-independent to that of mass-dependent isotope effects, a variety of Zr standards have appeared in the literature. While several of these standards have been proposed as the ideal isotope reference material (iRM) against which all data should be reported, none of them have been shown to meet the compositional and/or conflict-of-interest-free distribution requirements put forth by the community. To remedy this situation, we report on a community-led effort to develop and calibrate a scale defining iRM for Zr isotopes: NIST RM 8299. Developed in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from the widely used SRM 3169 Zr Standard Solution, the candidate RM 8299 was calibrated through an inter-laboratory study involving three laboratories. Our data show that RM 8299 meets all requirements of an ideal iRM. It is an isotopically homogeneous, high-purity reference material, that is free of isotope anomalies, and whose composition is identical to that of a major geological reservoir (Ocean Island Basalts). Furthermore, RM 8299 will be curated and distributed by NIST, a neutral, conflict-of-interest free organization, and was produced in sufficient quantities to last multiple decades. We recommend that all Zr isotope data to be reported against RM 8299. Our results also show that SRM 3169 lots #130920 and #071226 have identical composition to RM 8299. Therefore, using RM 8299 as the scale defining iRM will enable direct comparison of all future data with the vast majority of the existing literature data, both for mass-independent and mass-dependent isotope effects. To facilitate conversion of d94/90Zr values reported against other Zr standards, we provide high-precision conversion factors to the RM 8299 scale obtained using the double-spike method.

Abstract

Abstract Background Father involvement, defined in terms of both the quantity and quality of ways in which fathers may be involved, affects the child’s development. How specifically father involvement links to emotion regulation during early childhood (0–5 years) is, however, less clear. Methods This literature review synthesizes research on the links between father involvement and emotion regulation during early childhood, as well as the measurement methods used to assess them. Ten relevant studies were identified via four databases (up to August 2023). Results Results showed no significant direct links, but significant links appeared between high father involvement and more adaptive emotion regulation when moderated by variables related to the assessment of father involvement and emotion regulation, as well as the characteristics of the father and the child. Conclusions Future research should continue to use observational measures of father behaviors and child emotion regulation, increase the use of physiological measures of emotion regulation, and consider the influence of maternal and family variables.

A projeção para o ano de 2050 indica que o número de pessoas com mais de 60 anos aumentará para aproximadamente 2 bilhões, posicionando o Brasil em 6° lugar no ranking de países com maior população idosa. O envelhecimento pode acarretar significativas mudanças físicas e cognitivas ao longo da vida e com isso surge a necessidade de uma nova visão acerca dos ambientes de moradia. A criação de moradias adaptadas para a vida toda possibilita que as pessoas mantenham condições de vida independentes em suas próprias residências ou no ambiente que escolherem. Nesse sentido, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo apresentar um protocolo para ambientes seguros para a pessoa idosa, com estratégias projetuais que deem suporte ao aging in place. A partir de uma abordagem multimétodos, os resultados indicaram que o projeto desses ambientes deve considerar o princípio de flexibilidade e priorizar o estilo de vida dos usuários. Além disso, o projeto arquitetônico deve levar em conta as futuras necessidades dos usuários. Dessa forma, mudanças podem ser realizadas sem grandes alterações estruturais no espaço. Conclui-se que o conceito de aging in place pode contribuir para a formulação de políticas públicas voltadas à criação de moradias seguras de pessoas idosas no Brasil.

Abstract

The Caribbean Examinations Council data from 2011 to 2021 for the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) Council (2011–2021) shows many Jamaican secondary students failing to pass the Mathematics and English examinations. Discussions on the failings have focused on adults’ views, excluding student’s voices. This study sampled twelve 15–16-year-old rural Jamaican secondary students to hear their understanding and interpretation of academic performance and success and how these terms should be defined. A convenience sample and an interpretivist paradigm within a social constructionism framework were applied. Data was collected using photovoice, audio journaling, one-on-one interviews, and focus group discussion; a focus coding technique was used to find themes and present the findings. The data showed participants understood the definitions of the terms but interpreted them as stereotyping labels that adversely impacted many students’ performance and post-secondary success. The findings underscore the importance of hearing students’ voices to better understand academic outcomes.

Abstract

The study of beach morphology holds significant importance in coastal management, offering insights into coastal and environmental processes. It involves analyzing physical characteristics and beach features such as profile shape, slope, sediment composition, and grain size, as well as changes in elevation due to both erosion and accretion over time. Furthermore, studying changes in beach morphology is essential in predicting and monitoring coastal inundation events, especially in the context of rising sea levels and subsidence in some areas. However, having access to high-frequency oblique imagery and beach elevation datasets to document and confirm coastal forcing events and understand their impact on beach morphology is a notable challenge. This paper describes a one-year dataset comprising bi-monthly topographic surveys and imagery collected daily at 30 min increments at the beach adjacent to Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas, Texas. The data collection started in February 2023 and ended in January 2024. The dataset includes 18 topographic surveys, 6879 beach images, and ocean/wave videos that can be combined with colocated National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration metocean measurements. The one-year temporal span of the dataset allows for the observation and analysis of seasonal variations, contributing to a deeper understanding of coastal dynamics in the study area. Furthermore, a study that combines survey measurements with camera imagery is rare and provides valuable information on conditions before, after, and between surveys and periods of inundation. The imagery enables monitoring of inundation events, while the topographic surveys facilitate the analysis of their impact on beach morphology, including beach erosion and accretion. Various products, including beach profiles, contours, slope maps, triangular irregular networks, and digital elevation models, were derived from the topographic dataset, allowing in depth analysis of beach morphology. Additionally, the dataset contains a time series of four wet/dry shoreline delineations per day and their corresponding elevation extracted by combining the imagery with the digital elevation models. Thus, this paper provides a high-frequency morphological dataset and a machine learning-ready dataset suitable for predicting coastal inundation.

We present our work from the NSF AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography (AI2ES), where we are taking a convergence research approach. Our work deeply integrates across AI, environmental, and risk communication sciences. This involves collaboration with professional end-users to investigate how they assess the trustworthiness and usefulness of AI methods for forecasting natural hazards. In turn, we use this knowledge to develop AI that is more trustworthy. We discuss how and why end-users may trust or distrust AI methods for multiple natural hazards, including winter weather, tropical cyclones, severe storms, and coastal oceanography.

Abstract

In this article we study quantitative rigidity properties for the compatible and incompatible two-state problems for suitable classes of $\mathcal{A}$-free operators and for a singularly perturbed $T_3$-structure for the divergence operator. In particular, in the compatible setting of the two-state problem we prove that all homogeneous, first order, linear operators with affine boundary data which enforce oscillations yield the typical $\epsilon^{\frac{2}{3}}$-lower scaling bounds. As observed in \cite{CC15} for higher order operators this may no longer be the case. Revisiting the example from \cite{CC15}, we show that this is reflected in the structure of the associated symbols and that this can be exploited for a new Fourier based proof of the lower scaling bound. Moreover, building on \cite{RT22, GN04, PP04}, we discuss the scaling behaviour of a $T_3$ structure for the divergence operator. Abstract

Introduction Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) simplification strategies are needed for treatment-experienced people with HIV (PWH) and multidrug-resistant viruses. These individuals are commonly treated with boosted ART regimens and are thereby at risk for harmful drug-drug interactions (DDI). In this trial, we aim to assess the efficacy of the combination doravirine, dolutegravir and lamivudine (DOR/DTG/3TC) among people with a history of virological failure who receive boosted ART.Methods and analysis B-Free is a multistage, randomised, multicentre, open-label, non-inferiority trial, embedded within the Swiss HIV Cohort Study and conducted in collaboration with cohorts of PWH in the Netherlands and France. Cohort participants with a history of ART change due to virologic failure and who maintain HIV virologic suppression with an ART regimen consisting of a pharmacological booster and at least two drugs from classes other than nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are included. Patients with major drug resistance mutations against DTG or DOR and individuals with chronic hepatitis B virus infection are not eligible for the study. Individuals are randomised 1:1 to either receiving co-formulated DTG/3TC and DOR once daily or continuing their boosted ART regimen. The primary outcome is the proportion of individuals lacking virologic control (HIV-RNA ≥50 cp/mL) at 48 weeks, according to the Food and Drug Administration snapshot algorithm. Changes in DDI burden (assessed using a DDI score), treatment satisfaction (assessed using the HIV Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire), quality of life and mental health represent key secondary outcomes. Additional secondary outcomes include the proportion of individuals developing new resistance-associated mutations and changes in quality of life and mental health. In a qualitative substudy, we will conduct semistructured interviews with a subset of participants to assess their expectations and experiences towards HIV treatment and clinical research in general. Enrolling 210 individuals will provide 80% power to demonstrate non-inferiority, defined as less than 8% absolute increase in loss of viral suppression in individuals randomised to DOR/DTG/3TC (one-sided type I error rate of 0.025).Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the competent ethics committees (reference number BASEC 2023–01060) and the regulatory authority Swissmedic (reference number 701655) in Switzerland before the enrolment of the first participant. Approval by the European Medicines Agency and local ethical committees in the Netherlands and France will be obtained prior to including participants in these countries. Participant’s written informed consent is obtained by the investigators before enrolment. Abstract

Summary: Background: Blood-based disease staging across the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum holds the promise to identify individuals that profit from disease-modifying therapies. We set out to identify Braak V+ (Braak V and/or VI) tau PET-positive individuals within amyloid-β (Aβ)-positive individuals using plasma biomarkers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed 289 individuals from the TRIAD cohort and 306 individuals from the WRAP study across the AD continuum. The participants were evaluated by amyloid-PET with [18F]AZD4694 or [11C]PiB and tau-PET with [18F]MK6240 and measured plasma levels included total tau, phospho-tau isoforms (pTau) pTau-181, pTau-217, pTau-231, and N-terminal tau (NTA-tau). We evaluated the performances of plasma biomarkers using different analytic platforms to predict Braak V+ positivity in Aβ+ individuals. Findings: Highest associations with Braak V+ tau positivity in Aβ+ individuals were found for plasma pTau-217+Janssen (AUC [CI95%] = 0.97 [0.94, 1.0]) and ALZpath pTau-217 (AUC [CI95%] = 0.93 [0.86, 1.0]) in TRIAD. Plasma ALZpath pTau-217 separated Braak V+ tau PET-positive individuals in the WRAP longitudinal study (AUC [CI95%] = 0.97 [0.94, 1.0]). Interpretation: Thus, we demonstrate that using adjusted cut-offs, plasma pTau-217 identifies individuals with later Braak stage tau accumulation which will be helpful to stratify patients for treatments and clinical studies. Abstract

We report increased 18F-FDG uptake in the right posterior mediastinal region in a 70-year-old woman following the discovery of a mass in the aftermath of a bronchitis episode. We also report increased 18F-Choline uptake in the right posterior mediastinal region in a 66-year-old man with newly discovered prostate cancer, which may indicate the presence of mediastinal metastases. Both patients had a thoracic MRI showing an intense gadolinium enhancement in the same region, consistent with thoracic schwannomas, which were subsequently proven histologically. This case highlights that schwannoma is a diagnostic pitfall in both 18F-FDG and 18F-Choline PET/CT.

Abstract

Physical attacks, and among them fault injection attacks, are a significant threat to the security of embedded systems. Among the means of fault injection, laser has the significant advantage of being extremely spatially accurate. Numerous state-of-the-art studies have investigated the use of lasers to inject faults into a target at run-time. However, the high precision of laser fault injection comes with requirements on the knowledge of the implementation and exact execution time of the victim code. The main contribution of this work is the demonstration on experimental basis that it is also possible to perform laser fault injection on an unpowered device. Specifically, we targeted the Flash non-volatile memory of a 32-bit microcontroller. The advantage of this new attack path is that it does not require any synchronisation between the victim and the attacker. We provide an experimental characterization of this phenomenon with a description of the fault model from the physical level up to the software level. Finally, we applied these results to carry out a persistent fault analysis on a 128-bit AES with a particularly realistic attacker model which reinforces the interest of the PFA.

Abstract

The global winegrowing sector is under pressure due to the effects of global climate change. This is particularly true for New Zealand, where the wine industry is limited to a few regions. This study focuses on the South Island of New Zealand. It uses the Multi-objective Optimisation for Agrosystems (MOA) model to (i) investigate how potential exposure to climate risks and phenological stages will evolve under climate change, (ii) assess the suitability of current vineyards for viticulture in the future, and (iii) investigate potential emerging areas favourable for viticulture. The results show that a significant shift in the phenological stages of veraison and ripeness can be expected in the future due to the warming of the South Island of New Zealand. The projected phenological stages advancement is around one week in the near term for both Shared-Socioeconomic Pathways studied (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) and is more than three weeks and one month in long-term for SSP2–4.5 and SSP5-8.5 respectively. A regional to local increase in frost risk (Canterbury, Otago, and Southland) and a slight increase in disease risk (especially on the coast) are also projected in the future, while the South Island of New Zealand is not expected to be affected by heatwaves. The results show that Marlborough, New Zealand's most important winegrowing region, will continue to be one of the best areas for viticulture in the 21st century. On the other hand, new winegrowing opportunities are expected to emerge inland and southwards. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of the impact of climate change on the New Zealand wine industry and emphasises the need to adapt to changing climate conditions. It also provides insights into the future suitability of vineyards and identifies potential expansion areas for the New Zealand viticulture sector.

Despite a large amount of work being devoted to study the phase separation in solids, the underlying physical mechanism responsible for such diffusive first-order phase transitions remains difficult to model outside the spinodal regime, i.e., in the nucleation and growth regime. This work presents an alternative of the classical nucleation theory for modeling phase separation in this regime, even for systems far from the solubility limit, i.e., for high degree of meta-stability where the classical nucleation theory does not hold.
