Abstract

The use of high energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as probes of the distant universe relies on the close collaboration between space and ground facilities. In this context, the Sino-French mission SVOM has been designed to combine a space and a ground segment and to make the most of their synergy. On the ground, the 1.3 meter robotic telescope COLIBRI, jointly developed by France and Mexico, will quickly point the sources detected by the space hard X-ray imager ECLAIRs, in order to detect and localise their visible/NIR counterpart and alert large telescopes in minutes. COLIBRI is equipped with two visible cameras, called DDRAGO-blue and DDRAGO-red, and an infrared camera, called CAGIRE, designed for the study of high redshift GRBs candidates. Being a low-noise NIR camera mounted at the focus of an alt-azimutal robotic telescope imposes specific requirements on CAGIRE. We describe here the main characteristics of the camera: its optical, mechanical and electronics architecture, the ALFA detector, and the operation of the camera on the telescope. The instrument description is completed by three sections presenting the calibration strategy, an image simulator incorporating known detector effects, and the automatic reduction software for the ramps acquired by the detector. We briefly review sources of cosmic rays, their composition and spectra as well as their propagation in the galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields, both regular and fluctuating. A special attention is paid to the recent results of the X-ray and gamma-ray observations that shed light on the origin of the galactic cosmic rays and the challenging results of Pierre Auger Observatory on the ultra high energy cosmic rays. Abstract

The Fermi /GBM instrument is a vital source of detections of gamma-ray bursts and has an increasingly important role to play in understanding gravitational-wave transients. In both cases, its impact is increased by accurate positions with reliable uncertainties. We evaluate the RoboBA and BALROG algorithms for determining the position of gamma-ray bursts detected by the Fermi /GBM instrument. We construct a sample of 54 bursts with detections both by Swift /BAT and by Fermi /GBM. We then compare the positions predicted by RoboBA and BALROG with the positions measured by BAT, which we can assume to be the true position. We find that RoboBA and BALROG are similarly precise for bright bursts whose uncertainties are dominated by systematic errors, but RoboBA performs better for faint bursts whose uncertainties are dominated by statistical noise. We further find that the uncertainties in the positions predicted by RoboBA are consistent with the distribution of position errors, whereas BALROG seems to be underestimating the uncertainties by a factor of about 2. Additionally, we consider the implications of these results for the follow-up of the optical afterglows of Fermi /GBM bursts. In particular, for the DDOTI wide-field imager we conclude that a single pointing is best. Our sample would allow a similar study to be carried out for other telescopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recent advances in high-power applications employing voltage source converters have been primarily fuelled by the emergence of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) and its derivatives. Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as an effective way of controlling these converters because of its high response. However, the practical implementation of MPC encounters hurdles, particularly in MMCs featuring many sub-modules per arm. This research introduces an approach termed folding model predictive control (FMPC), coupled with a pre-processing sorting algorithm, tailored for modular multilevel converters. The objective is to alleviate a significant part of the computational burden associated with the control of these converters. The FMPC framework combines multiple control objectives, encompassing AC current, DC current, circulating current, arm energy, and leg energy, within a unified cost function. Both simulation studies and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing are conducted to verify the efficacy of the proposed FMPC. The findings underscore the FMPC's ability to deliver fast response and robust performance under both steady-state and dynamic operating conditions. Moreover, the FMPC adeptly mitigates circulating currents, reduces total harmonic distortion (THD%), and upholds capacitor voltage stability within acceptable thresholds, even in the presence of harmonic distortions in the AC grid. The practical applicability of MMCs, notwithstanding the presence of a large number of sub-modules (SMs) per arm, is facilitated by the significant reduction in switching states and computational overhead achieved through the FMPC approach. Abstract

We present analytical and numerical models of the bright long GRB 210822A at z  = 1.736. The intrinsic extreme brightness exhibited in the optical, which is very similar to other bright GRBs (e.g. GRBs 080319B, 130427A, 160625A 190114C, and 221009A), makes GRB 210822A an ideal case for studying the evolution of this particular kind of GRB. We use optical data from the RATIR instrument starting at T + 315.9 s, with publicly available optical data from other ground-based observatories, as well as Swift /UVOT, and X-ray data from the Swift /XRT instrument. The temporal profiles and spectral properties during the late stages align consistently with the conventional forward shock model, complemented by a reverse shock element that dominates optical emissions during the initial phases (T < 300 s). Furthermore, we observe a break at T  = 80 000 s that we interpreted as evidence of a jet break, which constrains the opening angle to be about θj = (3–5) degrees. Finally, we apply a machine-learning technique to model the multiwavelength light curve of GRB 210822A using the afterglowpy library. We estimate the angle of sight θobs = (6.4 ± 0.1) × 10−1 degrees, the energy E 0 = (7.9 ± 1.6) × 1053 erg, the electron index p  = 2.54 ± 0.10, the thermal energy fraction in electrons ϵe = (4.63 ± 0.91) × 10−5 and in the magnetic field ϵB = (8.66 ± 1.01) × 10−6, the efficiency χ = 0.89 ± 0.01, and the density of the surrounding medium n 0 = 0.85 ± 0.01 cm−3.
