School administrators contribute to the macro and micro environmental factors that challenge the sustainability of African American teachers. Retaining African American teachers is a particular challenge for schools that serve high proportions of students of color living in households with low-income. Although some research focuses on the attrition of teachers of color due to poor work environments, these conditions are most common in schools that enroll socio-economically disenfranchised students. However, literary reviews point to strategies that can work in such settings and more. Thus, this literature review examines effective strategies used by principals to sustain African American teachers in diverse schools. Critical Learning Theory framed the categories for this research. Critical Learning Theory explains the process of education and racial dignity. The longevity of African American teachers is dependent on the layers of support provided by principals. From the eleven different categories examined, the researchers of this study reflected and shared the research as a path towards sustainability for African American teachers. Overall, three categories emerged from this literature review within the 10-year span, 2011-2020: Black Teacher Retention, Mentorship, and Grow-Your-Own. Missing practices surrounding social justice such as incorporating ethnicity, culture, societal norms, and equity require further investigation as tools for principals to retain teachers of color.

The researchers examined the relationship between informal digital gameplay and learner profiles in two Japanese private universities. Seventy-eight participants responded to 59 items on a digital questionnaire that consisted of four sections: 1) Learner Profiles, 2) Digital Game Usage, 3) Open-Responses, and 4) Demographics. The results of the study demonstrated that students positively identified with the learner profiles featured on the questionnaire (M = 3.80). The highest mean values were associated with the profiles of Digital Citizen (M = 4.30) and Knowledge Constructor (M = 4.15). It was discovered that participants engaged in digital gameplay most often with smartphones (M = 3.64) and game consoles (M = 2.79). Simulation (M = 2.81) and real-time strategy (M = 2.66) games were the most frequently played. The results of a Pearson Product Moment Correlation showed that there was no significant relationship between informal digital gameplay and learner profiles. Furthermore, self-identified gamers and non-gamers did not significantly differ on the Learner Profile Total Scale or subscales.

Background: Physical activity is beneficial to physical, social, and emotional well-being, and schools are required to provide opportunities to engage in physical activity. While physical education and school sport have been extensively researched, little is known about the value of informal, unstructured, exercise opportunities. Methods: This study involved interviews with 19 adolescent girls who attended "extra" exercise opportunities provided by their school. The 3 opportunities were: (1) informal before-school exercise sessions at school, (2) before-school sport training, and (3) externally provided exercise sessions in a community setting during school hours. Results: Students perceived all opportunities as valuable with benefits to confidence, social well-being, and emotional well-being. The informal exercise sessions held greater benefits to confidence as confidence transferred from the physical activity context into the academic classroom more so than for those participating in sport. Social benefits were greater for those exercising before school as this opportunity created new relationships with teachers and with students from other classes and year groups. Conclusions: The opportunity to engage in informal exercise with peers before school widened social networks, increased confidence, changed the overall school climate, and increased attendance.

Career change teachers (CCTs) are heralded in international education policies as key to addressing teacher shortages and increasing quality and diversity in the profession. Using a qualitative approach inspired by Ball's discursive facet of policy enactment, interview responses from 23 Australian teacher educators were examined. The aim was to determine how these teacher educators spoke and thought about CCTs as well as how they discursively positioned this cohort in the profession. Findings revealed teacher educators described CCTs in multiple ways and discursively positioned them as complex. While the policies may be well intended, the authors point to three possible "perverse effects" of CCTs as a policy solution to teacher shortages: (1) the attrition rather than the retention of CCTs; (2) the valorising of personal and professional qualities over quality teachers and teaching; and (3) the further homogenisation rather than diversification of the teaching profession. Recommendations are suggested for mitigating these possible effects.

Solving chemical problems entails content knowledge and mastery of problem-solving processes. However, students sometimes lack metacognitive processes required for problem solving in chemistry. This study investigated how first-year chemistry students engaged with the metacognitive problem-solving scaffold Goldilocks Help. Data was collected from an activity, which involved students reflectively comparing their problem-solving attempts to an expert solution. These comparative reflections (N = 373) were thematically analysed to investigate scaffold engagement in three dimensions: cognitive, emotional, and behavioural. Findings showed that scaffold use, coupled with self-reflection, allowed students to identify flaws in their solutions that were either problem specific or related to their problem-solving skills. Students were able to propose improvement strategies, such as posing prompting questions to themselves and finding multiple alternatives for evaluating an answer. Students, who initially lacked structured problem-solving skills, found that scaffolding helped them to slow down metacognitive processes that would otherwise be rushed through or engaged with on a surface level. Students' resistance to the scaffold was due to fear of making a mistake or viewing the scaffold as requiring extra time and effort. Within a semester, many students demonstrated an improvement in successful and structured problem solving but some required more practice to internalise the scaffold. Our findings also indicated that students' reflections on problem solving became more sophisticated as a result of continued exposure to the scaffold and iterative opportunities to compare their work to expert solutions, to self-assess, and to reflect. Further research on reflective writing in chemistry education should focus on the ipsative nature of such assessments, i.e. processes focusing on students' own progress, growth, and improvement, compared to their previous performance, while recognising the power relations operationalised in course-embedded reflections. From the teaching practice perspective, having an awareness of students' thoughts, emotions, and actions can help instructors differentiate between levels of student capabilities, mindsets, and needs for extra support, allowing teaching efforts to be directed at promoting metacognitive and structured problem solving.

Climate change (CC) is the most significant global issue facing humanity, yet research addressing the perspectives of the key players influential in developing and implementing school-based CC curricula at a cross-country national level is scarce. This study examined the perceptions of policymakers, teacher professional development providers and CCE teachers in relation to: CC knowledge, representation in the curriculum, content and pedagogy, and support for teaching. The voices of these educators were gathered across five countries (Australia, England, Finland, Indonesia, and Israel) through semi-structured interviews. Analysis revealed much commonality across the countries and across role types. Although participants agreed that CCE is multidisciplinary and expressed widespread support for including CC in the curriculum through a cross-curriculum approach, their conceptualisations of CC knowledge were inconsistent. Participants recognised the importance of a science basis in CCE, and of student action, with some participants also emphasising emotional, ethical and value-based inclusions. Most suggested active learning focused pedagogies. Variations in approaches to CC implementation between countries suggest that CCE is in a transitional phase. In all five countries, the interviewees called for the curriculum to make more explicit connections to CC and for governmental leadership in supporting CCE, professional development and provision of resources.

Today's data-driven world requires earth and environmental scientists to have skills at the intersection of domain and data science. These skills are imperative to harness information contained in a growing volume of complex data to solve the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Despite the importance of these skills, Earth and Environmental Data Science (EDS) training is not equally accessible, contributing to a lack of diversity in the field. This creates a critical need for EDS training opportunities designed specifically for underrepresented groups. In response, we developed the Earth Data Science Corps (EDSC) which couples a paid internship for undergraduate students with faculty training to build capacity to teach and learn EDS using Python at smaller Minority Serving Institutions. EDSC faculty participants are further empowered to teach these skills at their home institutions which scales the program beyond the training lead by our team. Using a Rasch modeling approach, we found that participating in the EDSC program had a significant impact on undergraduate learners' comfort and confidence with technical and nontechnical data science skills, as well as their science identity and sense of belonging in science, two critical aspects of recruiting and retaining members of underrepresented groups in STEM. The past two decades have seen an overall increase in the number of students pursuing a graduate degree in the United States. Gaining a more nuanced understanding of how graduate students navigate the academic, personal, and professional challenges of post baccalaureate education will help programs better support them and ensure student success. With validation theory serving as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this study was to explore the graduate student experience within a college of agriculture at a southwestern university. This study focused on three aspects: resources students use, challenges they have experienced, and additional needs for support. Data for this phenomenological study were collected using focus groups with 24 students. Analysis of the data found students utilized a variety of resources including online content and peers. Another emergent theme recognized the significant role communication plays between faculty members and students. The final theme focused on solutions to support better communication and collaboration efforts. Several specific recommendations are provided to improve how validated graduate students feel in their academic pursuits. Future research should gather faculty perspectives to help shape professional development opportunities that would create enhanced graduate student mentoring.

Students with autism are enrolling in college more frequently, yet graduation rates for these students remain low. One reason posited is a lack of self-determination (SD) skills, which help students communicate with faculty and staff and act on goals. This study investigated how faculty at a community college support students in developing these skills, the nature of their communication with disability resource professionals and site directors, and the experiences of faculty and disability resource professionals with accommodations. The study employed basic qualitative methods, specifically semi-structured interviews with 31 faculty, disability resource professionals, and site directors. Findings show that faculty use specific strategies to communicate with students yet struggle with helping them to regulate behaviors and giving them autonomy. Faculty, disability resource professionals, and site directors indicate that rapport and trust are important in communications between all three groups about how to help students with autism. Yet when these qualities are not present, faculty find safe spaces to access the help they need through informal supports. All groups of participants indicated that while accommodation letters are a good place to start when supporting students with autism, they provide little help in reinforcing SD skills. Thus, accommodations are supplemented by faculty being willing to work with students beyond the accommodation letter.

Prior research on college choice indicates parents are the preferred source of information about college, yet little research exists from the viewpoint of parents, and even less research from the viewpoint of rural and minoritized parents. Using Q methodology, this study explored rural parent viewpoints of what makes college possible. The study was framed in social capital, community cultural wealth, and Perna's conceptual model of college choice. Factor analysis showed five distinct viewpoints and three consensus viewpoints among the parents. The five distinct factor viewpoints focused on academic achievement, college costs, the influence of family and friends, hard work, and staying close to home. Most notably, three consensus statements across all five factors indicated parents did not view teacher or school counselor expectations as important for making college possible. Findings can inform college access program planning and school outreach to parents and offer direction for future research on parent and community capital in college access.

Through a multistakeholder partnership, this research aims to catalyze the development of a blue economy corridor (BEC) through community-based asset mapping in the eastern portion of the Tar-Pamlico River Basin in North Carolina, a geographic area predominated by physically and culturally rural landscapes. Underpinned by appreciative inquiry, this project aims to counter a deficit model of community development in this portion of eastern North Carolina by increasing awareness of quality of life assets that communities currently possess and may leverage for sustainable economic, environmental, and social development through their inclusion in a digital interactive map freely available to the public.

There is a need to develop an anatomy course with contemporary pedagogy that is consistent with the core of the occupational therapy profession. The purpose of this study was to examine students' perception of a blended learning pedagogy applied to an occupation-based anatomy course compared to a traditionally delivered anatomy course using cadaver lab for entry-level doctoral occupational therapy students at a private university in the Pacific Northwest region. A retrospective, nonrandomized, twogroup, post-test only design with data gathered at the completion of each course was used. One student cohort received the occupation-based anatomy course with a traditional in-person learning format and the other received the course guided by the universal design, blended learning format. The primary outcomes were students' course performance and perception of the course. At the completion of the course, both student cohorts had equivalent course performance. Compared to those who received the traditional format, the blended learning format cohort yielded significantly higher scores in 3 out of 5 categories of the course evaluation, including syllabus design, contribution of course content to their needs as a professional, and assessment methods that reflected their learning. The study results suggest that the occupation-based anatomy course guided by a contemporary pedagogical approach is equal to traditional methods in anatomical knowledge acquisition but statistically superior in meeting students' perceived needs as professionals and reflecting their learning.

Academic literacies (AL) research has made significant contributions to understandings of student writing and literacy across higher education and particularly learning development. However, researchers and practitioners both within and external to the AL movement have struggled to clarify the relationship between AL and pedagogy. English for Academic Purposes researchers have highlighted the lack of a workable AL pedagogy, whilst AL researchers maintain that the model represents a design space or heuristic for thinking about practice in context, rather than a source of pedagogic prescriptions. This theoretical discussion elaborates concerns with the structural coherence of the AL model, its broadly social constructivist underpinnings and evidence base, and the impact of its ideological orientation on the pedagogy we derive from it. Underpinning these critiques is a suspicion that the interpretation of social constructivist epistemology on which AL relies to pinpoint weaknesses in the models of literacy/writing which it subsumes cannot generate a practical pedagogy. We argue that these structural and ideological tensions in the AL model help to explain confusion over its interpretation and implementation. We speculate that this singular focus on social constructivist-derived theory, though well-intentioned, does more to reinforce a particular ideological commitment than to enhance student learning.

There is a growing need for pre-health professional students to understand how the social determinants of health (SDOH) affect population health. The goal of this project was to evaluate the impact of a modified "Privilege Walk" (MPW) activity on students' awareness of personal privilege as a SDOH. Undergraduate students engaged in a MPW activity received a privilege score that could total 36 points (a higher score indicates more privilege). Students also completed a pre- and post-MPW survey to evaluate the impact of the activity on privilege awareness. Nonparametric tests were used to determine the effect of the MPW assignment on privilege outcomes. Twenty-one students completed the pre- and post-surveys. The majority of respondents were White (85.7%), non-Hispanic (90.5%), or female (81.0%). Ethnicity (1.14 points, p=0.052), race (0.71 points, p=0.0078), and current housing conditions (0.70 points, p=0.0273) were the top characteristics students felt gave them significantly more privilege. We demonstrated that an interactive approach in the classroom could increase students' awareness about privilege as a SDOH. These are promising findings as academic centers seek to evaluate and develop promising and evidence-based approaches to train healthcare students about the SDOH as they treat diverse and vulnerable patients.

This transformative autoethnography focuses on the authors' learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a result of their participation in university diversity-related book clubs and subsequent extensive dialogue with one another. The paper features three implementation vignettes where the authors engage in critical self-reflection and self-critique as they (re)consider ways to improve their educational practice as it pertains to DEI. The paper ends with implications for educators to consider as they engage in critical self-reflection/self-critique around DEI in their work.

In 2017 Purdue evGrand Prix hired a K-12 Indiana public educator (the author) to write instructional material that could be implemented into participating teams' high school science and engineering classrooms. The goal was to create science-based integrated STEM learning experiences that complement the construction and racing of a 48-volt electric go-kart. Over the next four years, the instructional designer learned how to implement instructional design techniques and theories while navigating the changing dynamics of a fledgling educational program. Personal experience with woodworking, classroom instruction, and classroom curriculum development played a huge role in instructional design decisions. Early decision-making processes were rooted in making slight modifications to existing educational resources. Here, minor edits were made for application to motorsports generally, and go-kart racing specifically. When specific go-kart educational materials were not available, educational and classroom best practices became the raw material for creating new and innovative instructional material. Collaboration with peers, professionals, and subject matter experts became the norm, while feedback from participating schools helped develop a single-minded focus to meet both teacher and student needs. Formalized training within an instructional design and technology course provided much-needed organizational and methodological skills associated with the transition from a teacher designing classroom resources to an instructional design professional.

Where should academic advising be housed within a college or university organizational structure? To assure that the academic is emphasized in academic advising, the most logical and appropriate location is within the academic structure of the institution, which means being placed as close as possible to the faculty and the curriculum. This approach allows academic advisors to engage in teaching, research, and community service just as their faculty colleagues do. Having academic advisors teach (in their offices and in classrooms), engage in research advancing the literature of academic advising, work with faculty to enhance curriculum when necessary, and develop policies and procedures that might enhance student success will move forward the professionalization of the field.

In April 2023, a group of 1 administrator, 5 faculty, and 20 students from the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) traveled to the Dominican Republic to participate in an interdisciplinary service-learning project lasting six days. Disciplines involved included pharmacy (2 faculty members and 9 students), physical therapy/kinesiology (1 faculty member and 5 students), social work (1 faculty member and 4 students), and political science (1 faculty member and 2 students). The home base for the group while in the Dominican Republic was Abba's House Children's Center, a nonprofit Christian organization tasked with feeding, educating, and providing limited medical care to approximately 125 children living in the barrio of Cienfuegos. During the service-learning experience, ULM students engaged in various service and learning activities tied to their programs of study. Students and faculty completed the "Community Service Attitude Scale" (CSAS) before and after the service-learning experience (Schwartz & Howard, 1977). A total of 14 students (70%) submitted both a pre- and post-trip CSAS survey. There was a significant improvement in scores for 21 out of 25 items on the CSAS. This international interdisciplinary service-learning program positively impacted students' attitudes toward community service including awareness of global needs.

Individuals from diverse minority backgrounds in the United States represent a one-of-its-kind collaboration in understanding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) challenges in workforce staffing and representation per Equal Opportunity norms. This study involved primary and secondary research in the realm of DEI to develop an implementable model from lessons gleaned from the findings of the research and gaps found in contemporary hiring and staffing practices. The study and model development are grounded in Rawls's 1971 theory of justice and predicated on the premise that opportunities are usually based on merit, and are generally well-intended, although often constrained by the frailties of human nature. The United States is in dire need of practical solutions, for despite well-intended U.S. laws and mandates on employment, equitable hiring practices are far from satisfactory. In a changing world order, many employers in the United States, and even to some extent globally, acknowledge they are duty-bound to ensure a harmonious, equitable, and safe work environment, devoid of any form of discrimination, harassment, or intimidation. Although easier said than done, achieving this equality requires a systematic approach to investigative organizational/institutional auditing, mapping, and diagnosing the ills that constrain collaboration and reduce productivity. The model is based on research and strategic practitioner design in its orientation, with practical implementation utility, flexible and customizable specifically for DEIB initiatives change, and suitable for educational and other industry settings. A skilled and scientific approach is needed to ensure equitable practices in professional and academic spheres.

Innovative teaching approaches are changing traditional approaches by using a variety of teaching and learning methods to allow learners to succeed. This paper describes a new instructional model for healthcare education based on the science of learning, educational theories, and best practices in lesson design. The Visualize Whole-Self (VW) Model was designed to provide a learning structure for faculty as they guide the instruction of students in health professions. From the beginning of the program, students visualize themselves as professionals while working with faculty to learn content. The Visualize Whole-Self Model requires students to continually assess their strengths and weaknesses to achieve the course expectations and objectives. The VW Model allows faculty to plan lessons for students using the four quadrants of "Prepare Some, Practice Some, See Some," and "Prove Some." The quadrants within the model are flexible to ensure lesson designs are focused on the specific objectives or skills to be mastered. This structured approach to learning places the demonstration of mastery on the students and the development of background understanding, practice activities, and ongoing coaching on the faculty. Initially designed for occupational therapy (OT) education, the VW Model can be used by faculty in any healthcare profession that focuses on both cognitive and psychomotor knowledge and skill development. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the model is effective and further qualitative and quantitative studies are needed.

Experiential learning and reflective dialogue are essential components of leadership learning. When leadership educators incorporate these practices into leadership training, they provide opportunities for leadership learners to develop foundational knowledge and skills for engaging in the leadership process. To effectively facilitate leadership trainings, educators should practice approaches to reflection, consider their identities, become comfortable with holding space, and engage in metacognitive reflection.

Universal screening to predict students' risk for reading problems is a foundational component of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework and is required by law in many US states. School or district administrators are tasked with selecting screening assessments that are both technically adequate and feasible given the resources of their local context. One common recommendation is that educational screening assessments should have at least a sensitivity of 0.9 and a specificity of 0.8. The two studies presented here used simulation methodology to identify the screener-outcome correlation(s) needed to achieve these recommended levels of sensitivity and sensitivity with a one-indicator (study 1) or two-indicator (study 2) screening battery. In both studies, the base rates of non-proficiency were manipulated. Results showed that the minimum correlations needed to achieve this recommendation were higher than what is typically observed in practice, and also varied across samples with differing base rates. Furthermore, screening assessments with the recommended levels of sensitivity and specificity had high rates of false positive classifications that depended on the base rate, cut-point, and method of assigning risk. These results suggest that the practice of issuing specific criteria for the sensitivity and specificity of screeners may be misguided. Implications for the evaluation of the technical adequacy of screening assessments and recommendations for practitioners are discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic initially placed college and university instruction into an emergency remote mode. The subsequent periods of the pandemic presented new challenges. This paper examines changes in faculty work lives in the immediate aftermath of the onset of the pandemic and reports on results from surveys of faculty at three selective liberal arts colleges in 2020 and again in 2021. Specifically, we investigate faculty experiences with work strain. Drawing on job demands-resources theory, we develop an analytic framework that examines the effects of status resources (gender, race, and tenure), work domain demands and resources (teaching and research resources, student demands, emotional labor demands, and scholarship demands), and home and family demands (caregiving). Our findings suggest that work strain was elevated in both periods and that only tenure among the status resources predicted less strain. We show that the sources of elevated strain shifted from teaching and research demands in the initial phase of the pandemic to emotional labor demands during the first full academic year of it.

This study examined whether autistic people with siblings score higher on measures of empathy than those without siblings. Cohorts of autistic children (n = 939; mean age = 7.35 years (SD = 2.15)) and autistic adults (n = 736; mean age = 37 years (SD = 12.39)) from the Cambridge Autism Research Database (CARD) were each divided into two groups: with or without siblings. Empathy was measured using the children version of the Empathy Quotient (EQ) (parent-report) for children. For adults, the EQ (self-report version) and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) were used. Contrary to the hypothesis, autistic children without siblings scored higher on EQ than those with siblings (t[subscript (283.70)] = 4.20, p < 0.001; d = 0.50). In adults, there was no difference between autistic adults with and without siblings on both measures, but there was an interaction effect between sex and group on the RMET (f[subscript (1732)] = 4.10, p = 0.04): whilst autistic males without siblings on average scored lower than females, autistic males with siblings on average performed similarly to females. Future research should investigate the possible effect of siblings on autistic males' empathy performance in a larger cohort of autistic individuals. Children's empathic abilities may be underestimated by their parents when they have siblings due to a contrast effect.

The goal of this study was to translate and adapt the original 9-item of the Contextual Assessment of Social Skills (CASS) to a Dutch version and assess its psychometric qualities. Autistic adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (n = 99) took part in a randomized controlled trial. In this study, pre-intervention data were utilized. The original CASS was adapted to ensure cultural relevance and the content validity was assessed. Data was used to assess reliability and structural validity, using confirmatory factor analysis. 4-item were added to the CASS during the adaptation to better align with the objectives of the experimental intervention. The original 9-item had inter-item correlations between 0.01 and 0.70. The Cronbach's alpha for the original 4-item total score was moderate ([alpha] = 0.69), while for a 7-item total score, it was high ([alpha] = 0.86). This 7-item total score had a sufficient model fit (Comparative Fit Index = 0.90). This total score had a significant correlation with the Assertion subscale of the Social Skills Improvement System-Adolescent (SSIS-A) (r = 0.26, p < 0.01), and the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2) total score (r = - 0.21, p = 0.04) indicating sufficient convergent validity. The CASS total score was not correlated with the Repetitive and Restricted Behavior scale of the SRS-2 (r = - 0.08, p = 0.43), indicating sufficient divergent validity. The Dutch CASS can be considered a conceptually sound and reliable observational instrument for assessing social conversational skills in Dutch autistic youth. Further evaluation of its feasibility when implemented in practice, outside of clinical research, is needed.

The purpose of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the Family Involvement Questionnaire-Short Form (FIQ-SF) for use with Spanish-speaking families of children enrolled in early childhood education programs. This study examined the factor structure of the FIQ-SF and established criterion validity for the resulting FIQ-SF dimension scores. Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses replicated the three dimensions of the English FIQ: Home Engagement, School Engagement, and home-school Conferencing. Mean differences across family demographics were examined. Criterion-related validity for the three FIQ-SF dimensions was established by examining correlations with scores on measures of parent-reported satisfaction with educational experiences, program records of family engagement, direct assessments of child language skills and teacher-reported approaches to learning. Future directions and practice implications for the use of the Spanish FIQ-SF to inform program policy and interventions are discussed.

Scores from observational measures of teaching have recently been put to many uses within school systems, including communicating a standard of practice and providing teacher feedback, identifying teachers for professional development, monitoring system equity, and making employment decisions. In each of these uses, observation scores are interpreted as representing some aspect of the enacted instruction or teachers' capacity to enact instruction, as seen through the observation systems lens for understanding teaching quality. The quality of these interpretations, or the extent to which observation scores are composed of a signal that accurately reflects the interpretation, has important implications for the overall validity of uses of observation systems. Starting from an explicit conceptualization of instruction, this paper combines generalizability theory and hierarchical linear modelling approaches to decompose observation scores to explore the extent to which scores from observation systems are composed of signal, error, and bias across four different uses (i.e., teacher feedback, professional development, monitoring system equity, and employment decisions) of scores. We show that the quality of observation scores may depend more on what scores are interpreted as representing (i.e., the proposed use) than on the specific observation rubric being used. Further, we show that rater errors and biases are a major threat to any attempt to interpret observation scores as capturing the observation system's understanding of teaching quality. We discuss implications for using scores from observation systems.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the essential experiences and skills required for successful and effective leadership at Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) in the United States. Utilizing Weick's seven properties of sensemaking as a framework, this study examines how participants developed their sensemaking abilities regarding their presidencies at TCUs. To conduct this research, a phenomenological qualitative research method was utilized, analysing 11 interviews with TCU presidents. The themes identified in this study included developing a vision plan that the Tribal community supports; learning to communicate with diverse stakeholders; understanding Tribal and non-Tribal politics for fundraising and accreditations; and eliciting mentors from Tribal leaders and other TCU presidents. These findings have vital implications for individuals interested in pursuing leadership positions at TCUs, as they highlight emic perspectives on the skills and experiences necessary for success in these roles.

Contribution: This article provides an examination of changes in first-year engineering students' perceptions of the role of an engineer after completing the Engineers Without Borders Challenge. Background: Essential pre- and post-comparisons missing in existing studies on the Challenge are provided, as well as comparison to other first-year project types across two universities. Research Question: Do students who participate in service-learning versus traditional project-based learning gain different understandings of the role of an engineer? Methodology: This work implements the questionnaire variant of convergent mixed methods design. A survey containing a mix of Likert-scale, open-ended short answer, and closed card sorting questions was administered to students enrolled in first-year engineering (FYE) courses across two institutions. Limitations of this work include potential bias due to the pre/post survey design and participant course self-selection. Findings: Students' perceptions of the roles of engineers did not significantly differ by project type. However, changes in their perceptions of technical skills as important to the role of engineers did indicate the beginning of a transition from discipline level thinking to process level thinking. Additionally, course learning objectives influenced students' perceptions of the role of engineers--with an increase in awareness of the importance of problem solving, communication, design process, and teamwork and a decreasing sense of importance of items missing from course objectives, such as creativity and helping people. Engineers' professional responsibility to diversity, equity, and inclusion were absent from both the course syllabi and student perceptions of the role of an engineer.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can prevent 90% of cancers caused by HPV. Health care provider recommendations affect vaccine uptake, yet there are a lack of studies examining the impact of the school nurse (SN) in vaccine recommendations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of adding a SN HPV recommendation to the standard vaccination letter sent to parents/guardians. The rate of vaccination between the intervention and control schools was not statistically significant (Estimate (Std. Error) = -0.3066 (0.2151), p = 0.154). After controlling for age, sex, race, insurance type, and medical practice type, there was no significant difference in the likelihood to receive the HPV vaccine (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 0.563-4.19 in 2018; OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.124-14.54 in 2019. Further work is needed to clarify how school nurses can better promote HPV vaccine, and which adolescent demographic groups (e.g., race, insurance type, provider type) face barriers to HPV vaccine uptake.

This article examines teacher self-efficacy in social and emotional learning (SEL), particularly by teachers of color, and the conditions that shaped their efficacy beliefs. Data are drawn from surveys with two teacher groups, one comprised of teachers of color and a comparative group that was predominantly white. Surveys were followed by interviews and observations with teachers in each group. Findings showed that teachers of color reported stronger efficacy beliefs in SEL and described practices that centered racial justice. Differences in efficacy are attributed to a social justice learning community that provided efficacy-forming experiences for teachers of color to enact equity-based SEL practices.
