Abstract: Commonly optical high voltage sensors employ the Pockels effect in a bulk electro-optic crystal such as Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO). Typically, the maximum crystal length is 100-200mm and determined by the limits of the conventional growth technique (Czochralski). In this paper we report on the growth by a micro-pulling down technique of long single crystalline BGO fibers as an alternative to bulk crystals and their characterization for voltage sensing. The fiber thickness may range from a few 100μm to a few mm. The parameters needed for stable growth over the entire length of the crystal were analyzed and optimized. Thin rods with a length of up to 850mm were grown. Samples were characterized with respect to homogeneity of growth, residual birefringence (BGO is free of natural birefringence), crystal orientation, and performance under voltage. To assess the prevalence and morphological characteristics of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) with CT coronary angiography (CTCA) in comparison to conventional catheterangiography (CCA). Dual-source CTCA examinations from 677 consecutive patients (223 women; median age 57 years) were retrospectively evaluated by two blinded observers for the presence of CAE defined as a diameter enlargement > or = 1.5 times the diameter of adjacent normal coronary segments. Vessel diameters and contrast attenuation within and proximal to ectatic segments were measured. CCA was used to compare measurements obtained from CTCA with the coronary flow velocity by using the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) frame count. CTCA identified CAE in 20 of 677 (3%) patients. CCA was performed in ten of these patients. CAE diameter measurements with CTCA (10.0 +/- 5.4 mm) correlated significantly (r = 0.92, p < 0.001) with the CCA measurements (8.8 +/- 4.9 mm), but had higher diameters (levels of agreement: -1.0 to 3.4 mm). Contrast attenuation was significantly lower in the ectatic (343 +/- 63 HU) than in the proximal (394 +/- 60 HU) segments (p < 0.01). The attenuation difference significantly correlated with the CAE ratio (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) and the TIMI frame count (r = 0.58, p < 0.05). The prevalence of CAE in a population examined by CTCA is around 3%. Contrast attenuation measurements with CTCA correlate well with the flow alterations assessed with CCA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of low kilovoltage dual-source computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) on qualitative and quantitative image quality parameters and radiation dose. Dual-source CTCA with retrospective ECG gating was performed in 80 consecutive patients of normal weight. Forty were examined with a standard protocol (120 kV/330mAs), 20 were examined at 100 kV/330mAs, and 20 at 100 kV/220mAs. Two blinded observers independently assessed image quality of each coronary segment and measured the image parameters noise, attenuation, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). The effective radiation dose was calculated using CT dose volume index and the dose-length product. Diagnostic image quality was obtained in 99% of all coronary segments (1,127/1,140) without significant differences among the protocols. Image noise, attenuation, and CNR were significantly higher for 100 kV/330mAs (26 +/- 3 HU, 549 +/- 62 HU, 25.5 +/- 3.2; each P < 0.01) and 100 kV/220mAs (27 +/- 2 HU, 560 +/- 43 HU, 25.0 +/- 2.2; each P < 0.01) when compared to the 120-kV protocol (21 +/- 2 HU, 317 +/- 28 HU, 20.6 +/- 1.7). There was no significant difference between the two 100-kV protocols. Estimated effective radiation dose of the 120-kV protocol (8.9 +/- 1.2 mSv) was significantly higher than the 100 kV/330mAs (6.7 +/- 0.8 mSv, P < 0.01) or 100 kV/220mAs (4.4 +/- 0.6 mSv, P < 0.001) protocols. Dual-source CTCA with 100 kV is feasible in patients of normal weight, results in a diagnostic image quality with a higher CNR, and at the same time significantly reduces the radiation dose. Matter-wave interference experiments enable us to study matter at its most basic, quantum level and form the basis of high-precision sensors for applications such as inertial and gravitational field sensing. Success in both of these pursuits requires the development of atom-optical elements that can manipulate matter waves at the same time as preserving their coherence and phase. Here, we present an integrated interferometer based on a simple, coherent matter-wave beam splitter constructed on an atom chip. Through the use of radio-frequency-induced adiabatic double-well potentials, we demonstrate the splitting of Bose–Einstein condensates into two clouds separated by distances ranging from 3 to 80 μm, enabling access to both tunnelling and isolated regimes. Moreover, by analysing the interference patterns formed by combining two clouds of ultracold atoms originating from a single condensate, we measure the deterministic phase evolution throughout the splitting process. We show that we can control the relative phase between the two fully separated samples and that our beam splitter is phase-preserving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided percutaneous vascular interventions have evolved to a practical possibility with the advent of open-configuration MR systems and real-time tracking techniques. The purpose of this study was to assess an MR-tracking percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) catheter with regard to its safety profile and functionality.Methods: Real-time, biplanar tracking of the PTA catheter was made possible by incorporating a small radiofrequency (RF) coil in the catheter tip and connecting it to a coaxial cable embedded in the catheter wall. To evaluate potentially hazardous thermal effects due to the incorporation of the coil, temperature measurements were performed within and around the coil under various scanning and tracking conditions at 1.5 Tesla (T). Catheter force transmission and balloon-burst pressure of the MR-tracking PTA catheter were compared with those of a standard PTA catheter. The dilatative capability of the angioplasty balloon was assessed in vitro as well as in vivo, in an isolated femoral artery segment in a swine.Results: The degree of heating at the RF coil was directly proportional to the power of the RF pulses. Heating was negligible with MR tracking, conventional spin-echo and low-flip gradient-echo sequences. Sequences with higher duty cycles, such as fast spin echo, produced harmful heating effects. Force transmission of the MR-tracking PTA catheter was slightly inferior to that of the standard PTA catheter, while balloon-burst pressures were similar to those of conventional catheters. The MR-tracking PTA catheter functioned well both in vitro and in vivo.Conclusion: The in vivo use of an MR-tracking PTA catheter is safe under most scanning conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic resonance (MR) angiography is emerging as an increasingly useful tool for the noninvasive evaluation of the cardiovascular system. Ultrafast echoplanar imaging (EPI) data acquisition strategies are becoming more widely available. When applied to MR angiography, the associated reduction in data collection time allows breathheld acquisitions of entire vascular territories, as well as the exploitation of short-lived flow-enhancing measures. This paper describes technical aspects of EPI, its implementation into vascular imaging sequences, and associated artifacts. This is followed by a discussion of potential EPI MRA applications in the carotid and renal arteries, the portal venous system, and arteries and veins of the lower leg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We experimentally demonstrate that one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates brought close to microfabricated wires on an atom chip are a very sensitive sensor for magnetic and electric fields reaching a sensitivity to potential variations of ∼10-14 eV at 3 μm spatial resolution. We measure a two-dimensional magnetic field map 10 μm above a 100-μm-wide wire and show how the transverse current-density component inside the wire can be reconstructed. The relation between the field sensitivity and the spatial resolution is discussed and further improvements utilizing Feshbach-resonances are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutral atoms can be trapped and manipulated with surface mounted microscopic current carrying and charged structures. We present a lithographic fabrication process for such atom chips based on evaporated metal films. The size limit of this process is below 1 μm. At room temperature, thin wires can carry current densities of more than 107 A/cm2 and voltages of more than 500 V. Extensive test measurements for different substrates and metal thicknesses (up to 5 μm) are compared to models for the heating characteristics of the microscopic wires. The number of CT images increased significantly when 16-row multi-detector CT scanners (MDCT) were introduced. The purpose of this study is to quantify the total data management cost of MDCT and to identify cost drivers. An activity-based costing (ABC) method was used to analyze cost drivers in MDCT data management. Changing from 4-row to 16-row CT, mean image count per exam was increased from 699 to 1465 images per exam, reaching up to 18,000 images per exam. Cost analysis was implemented in four steps: (1) identify activities; (2) assign direct costs to activities; (3) define bases for indirect costs; (4) assign indirect cost to the activities. Four major activities were identified in MDCT data management: PACS check-in, data handling during digital reporting, storage, and hospital-wide digital image distribution. Total direct and indirect costs were $49 per mean exam. With $15.27 per exam, storage turned out to be the main cost driver. Therefore, two scenarios for selective storage are discussed. When 50% of the images are deleted before long-term storage, savings of $7.63 per exam are achieved, while additional labor cost for data selection is only $4.55 per exam. When 80% of the images are deleted in a labor-intensive process, savings of $9.11 per exam will result. A what-if-analysis shows that long-term storage of MDCT data is cost-effective below a storage cost of $8.40 per exam. Given the actual total cost of ownership (TCO) of $53 per GB, high performance storage is not cost-effective for long-term storage of high volume MDCT data. If the storage price decay of annually 45% continues, the break-even cost of $8.40 per exam will be reached in the next 1–2 years. In the meantime, only the most relevant parts of MDCT exams should be kept, or low cost mass storage media should be used to optimize the cost–value relation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
