Simultaneous observations using a long-duration balloon and the PANSY radar, a large-scale atmospheric radar, were performed at Syowa Station in the Antarctic, from January to February 2022. They captured near-inertial frequency gravity waves (NIGWs) in the lower stratosphere. The analysis using both datasets and the latest reanalysis ERA5 revealed that two NIGW packets with an upward group velocity and short vertical wavelengths of less than 3 km propagated northeastward and eastward above Syowa Station. Although the NIGWs over Syowa Station were qualitatively represented by ERA5, their amplitudes were underestimated. In addition, the latter NIGW packet was observed by the long-duration balloon, but not represented by ERA5. It could be because the vertical wavelength of NIGW became shorter than the lower limit of vertical wavelength explicitly represented in ERA5 by entering the high static stability region around the balloon, or due to explicit and implicit diffusion and/or misrepresentation of the position of the NIGW packet in the model. Abstract Imaging observations of OH airglow were performed at Meiji University, Japan (35.6° N, 139.5° E), from May 2018 to December 2019. Mountainous areas are located to the west of the imager, and westerly winds are dominant in the lower atmosphere throughout the year. Mountain waves (MWs) are generated and occasionally propagate to the upper atmosphere. However, only four likely MW events were identified, which are considerably fewer than expected. There are two possible reasons for the low incidence: (1) MWs do not propagate easily to the upper mesosphere due to background wind conditions, and/or (2) the frequency of MW excitation was low around the observation site. Former possibility is found not to be a main reason to explain the frequency by assuming typical wind profiles in troposphere and upper mesosphere over Japan. Thus, frequency and spatial distribution of orographic wavy clouds were investigated by analyzing images taken by the Himawari-8 geostationary meteorological satellite in 2018. The number of days when wavy clouds were detected in the troposphere around the observation site (Kanto area) was about a quarter of that around the Tohoku area. This result indicates that frequency of over-mountain flow which is thought to be a source of excitation of MWs is low in Kanto area. We also found that the angle between the horizontal wind direction in troposphere and the orientation of the mountain ridge is a good proxy for the occurrence of orographic wavy clouds, i.e., excitation of MWs. We applied this proxy to the topography around the world to investigate regions where MWs are likely to be excited frequently throughout the year to discuss the likelihood of "MW hotspots" at various spatial scale. Abstract While knowledge of the energy inputs from the Sun (as it is the primary energy source) is important for understanding the solar-terrestrial system, of equal importance is the manner in which the terrestrial part of the system organizes itself in a quasi-equilibrium state to accommodate and re-emit this energy. The ROSMIC project (2014–2018 inclusive) was the component of SCOSTEP’s Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact (VarSITI) program which supported research into the terrestrial component of this system. The four themes supported under ROSMIC are solar influence on climate, coupling by dynamics, trends in the mesosphere lower thermosphere, and trends and solar influence in the thermosphere. Over the course of the VarSITI program, scientific advances were made in all four themes. This included improvements in understanding (1) the transport of photochemically produced species from the thermosphere into the lower atmosphere; (2) the manner in which waves produced in the lower atmosphere propagate upward and influence the winds, dynamical variability, and transport of constituents in the mesosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere; (3) the character of the long-term trends in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere; and (4) the trends and structural changes taking place in the thermosphere. This paper reviews the progress made in these four areas over the past 5 years and summarizes the anticipated research directions in these areas in the future. It also provides a physical context of the elements which maintain the structure of the terrestrial component of this system. The effects that changes to the atmosphere (such as those currently occurring as a result of anthropogenic influences) as well as plausible variations in solar activity may have on the solar terrestrial system need to be understood to support and guide future human activities on Earth.

Abstract Transient mesospheric echo in the VHF range was detected at an altitude of 65–70 km during the auroral breakup that occurred from 2220 to 2226 UT on June 30, 2017. During this event, the footprint of the Arase satellite was located within the field of view of the all-sky imagers at Syowa Station in the Antarctic. Auroral observations at Syowa Station revealed the dominant precipitation of relatively soft electrons during the auroral breakup. A corresponding spike in cosmic noise absorption was also observed at Syowa Station, while the Arase satellite observed a flux enhancement of > 100 keV electrons and a broadband noise without detecting chorus waves or electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport simulation code was used to quantitatively evaluate the ionization in the middle atmosphere. Results of this study indicate that the precipitation of energetic electrons of > 100 keV, rather than X-rays from the auroral electrons, played a dominant role in the transient and deep (65–70 km) mesospheric ionization during the observed auroral breakup.

The 44th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-44) performed intensive ozonesonde observations at Syowa Station (69.0゜S, 39.6゜E) from June 2003 through January 2004 to clarify the time evolution and mechanism of the Antarctic ozone hole dissipation as well as its formation. From analysis of the ozonesonde and satellite observational data, it was found that ozone concentration inside the Antarctic ozone hole began to increase due to the Brewer-Dobson circulation and the lateral mixing between inside and outside the polar vortex even before its breakup. In addition, the ozone increase was dependent on longitude because of the zonal wavenumber 1 quasi-stationary planetary waves. It is also reported that the ozone enhanced layers frequently observed inside the Antarctic ozone hole mostly originated from the vortex boundary region.

An intensive balloon-borne observation was performed at Syowa Station in the Antarctic (69.0°S, 39.6°E) in July 2016 using Cryogenic Frostpoint Hygrometers (CFH) and Electrochemical Concentration Cell (ECC) ozonesondes. High water vapor concentration was observed in the upper troposphere in two out of five observations. Trajectory analysis and atmospheric reanalysis data showed that moist air was transported into the upper troposphere due to the upwelling in front of a trough. While only isentropic transport was dominant in one case, both the isentropic transport and diabatic heating contributed to the upward transport in the other case. In another case where the air parcels came over the Antarctic continent, the water vapor concentration in the upper troposphere was lower than in the other cases. These results suggest that transport of air parcels with different origins by synoptic-scale disturbances controls water vapor concentration in the Antarctic upper troposphere. We applied a novel three-dimensional spectral analysis method to GPS-TEC perturbation (GPSTECP) maps to study the propagation direction of daytime and nighttime medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) over North America. By this method, we can automatically calculate the phase velocity spectrum and directionality of MSTIDs. We focused on the periods of high MSTIDs occurrence, namely, June-July 2006 and November-December 2006, to study nighttime and daytime MSTIDs. We divided North America into the west (100°-130°W, 25°-55°N) and east (70°-100°W, 25°-55°N) parts. Our results show that both daytime and nighttime MSTID propagations exhibit strong longitudinal variations as a function of local time and day-to-day variations. The power peaks of daytime MSTIDs are from 10:00-16:00 LT in the west part and 10:00-14:00 LT in the east part. The predominant propagation directions of daytime MSTIDs are southward (southeastward) in the west (east). The daytime local time variations demonstrate that the MSTIDs display directional change in the west part; however, a similar directional change is not very pronounced in the east part. The local time variations of nighttime MSTIDs shows the power peaks from 22:00-02:00 LT in the west and 20:00-00:00 LT in the east. We found that the predominant propagation direction in the west part is westward with a wider azimuthal band (~210°-300°) than the east part (~210°-240°). By comparing nighttime propagation directions between the western and eastern parts, we reached the conclusion that the magnetic declination angle affects the propagation direction. We retrieved lower stratospheric vertical profiles of O3, HNO3, and HCl from solar spectra taken with a ground-based Fourier-Transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) installed at Syowa Station, Antarctica (69.0° S, 39.6° E) from March to December 2007 and September to November 2011. This was the first continuous measurements of chlorine species throughout the ozone hole period from the ground in Antarctica. We analyzed temporal variation of these species combined with ClO, HCl, and HNO3 data taken with the Aura/MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) satellite sensor, and ClONO2 data taken with the Envisat/MIPAS (The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding) satellite sensor at 18 and 22 km over Syowa Station. HCl and ClONO2 decrease occurred at both 18 and 22 km, and soon ClONO2 was almost depleted in early winter. When the sun returned to Antarctica in spring, enhancement of ClO and gradual O3 destruction were observed. During the ClO enhanced period, negative correlation between ClO and ClONO2 was observed in the time-series of the data at Syowa Station. This negative correlation was associated with the distance between Syowa Station and the inner edge of the polar vortex. We used MIROC3.2 Chemistry-Climate Model (CCM) results to see the comprehensive behavior of chlorine and related species inside the polar vortex and the edge region in more detail. From CCM model results, rapid conversion of chlorine reservoir species (HCl and ClONO2) into Cl2, gradual conversion of Cl2 into Cl2O2, increase of ClO when sunlight became available, and conversion of ClO into HCl, was successfully reproduced. HCl decrease in the winter polar vortex core continued to occur due to the transport of ClONO2 from the subpolar region to higher latitudes, providing a flux of ClONO2 from more sunlit latitudes into the polar vortex. Temporal variation of chlorine species over Syowa Station was affected by both heterogeneous chemistry related to Polar Stratospheric Cloud (PSC) occurrence deep inside the polar vortex, and transport of an NOx-rich airmass from lower latitudinal polar vortex boundary region which can produce additional ClONO2 by reaction of ClO with NO2. The deactivation pathways from active chlorine into reservoir species (HCl and/or ClONO2) were found to be highly dependent on the availability of ambient O3. At an altitude where most ozone was depleted in Antarctica (18 km), most ClO was converted to HCl. To understand and project future ozone recovery, understanding of mechanisms related to polar ozone destruction is crucial. For polar stratospheric ozone destruction, chlorine species play an important role, but detailed temporal evolution of chlorine species in the Antarctic winter is not well understood. When the sun returned to Antarctica in spring, enhancement of ClO and gradual O3 destruction were observed. The first observations made by a complete PANSY radar system (Program of the Antarctic Syowa MST/IS Radar) installed at Syowa Station (39.6° E, 69.0° S) were successfully performed from 16 to 24 March 2015. Over this period, quasi-half-day period (12 h) disturbances in the lower mesosphere at heights of 70 to 80 km were observed. Estimated vertical wavelengths, wave periods and vertical phase velocities of the disturbances were approximately 13.7 km, 12.3 h and -0.3ms-1, respectively. Under the working hypothesis that such disturbances are attributable to inertia-gravity waves, wave parameters are estimated using a hodograph analysis. The estimated horizontal wavelengths are longer than 1100 km, and the wavenumber vectors tend to point northeastward or southwestward. Using the nonhydrostatic numerical model with a model top of 87 km, quasi-12 h disturbances in the mesosphere were successfully simulated. We show that quasi-12 h disturbances are due to wavelike disturbances with horizontal wavelengths longer than 1400 km and are not due to semidiurnal migrating tides. Wave parameters, such as horizontal wavelengths, vertical wavelengths and wave periods, simulated by the model agree well with those estimated by the PANSY radar observations under the abovementioned assumption. The parameters of the simulated waves are consistent with the dispersion relationship of the inertia-gravity wave. These results indicate that the quasi-12 h disturbances observed by the PANSY radar are attributable to large-scale inertia-gravity waves. By examining a residual of the nonlinear balance equation, it is inferred that the inertia-gravity waves are likely generated by the spontaneous radiation mechanism of two different jet streams. One is the midlatitude tropospheric jet around the tropopause while the other is the polar night jet. Large vertical fluxes of zonal and meridional momentum associated with large-scale inertia-gravity waves are distributed across a slanted region from the midlatitude lower stratosphere to the polar mesosphere in the meridional cross section. Moreover, the vertical flux of the zonal momentum has a strong negative peak in the mesosphere, suggesting that some large-scale inertia-gravity waves originate in the upper stratosphere. Research on the effects of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) on earth's atmosphere is rapidly growing. However, these effects have not been well distinguished from those of other climate forcings. This study extracts EPP effects on the middle atmosphere in the southern hemisphere from the latest reanalysis datasets using multiple regression analysis and composite analysis. Statistically significant temperature anomalies in the winter polar upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere are found, but a simple dynamical signature explaining the anomalies is not evident. On the other hand, it is found that a negative temperature anomaly extending from the polar lower mesosphere to the midlatitude upper stratosphere in July is driven by anomalous Eliassen-Palm flux divergence in the midlatitude lower mesosphere. Over this period, quasi-half-day period (12 h) disturbances in the lower mesosphere at heights of 70 km to 80 km were observed. Estimated vertical wavelengths, wave periods and vertical phase velocities of the disturbances were approximately 13.7 km, 12.3 h and -0.3 m s-1, respectively. Under the working hypothesis that such disturbances are attributable to inertia-gravity waves, wave parameters are estimated using a hodograph analysis. The estimated horizontal wavelengths are longer than 1100 km, and the wavenumber vectors tend to point northeastward or southwestward. Using the non-hydrostatic numerical model with a model top of 87 km, quasi 12 h disturbances in the mesosphere were successfully simulated. We show that quasi 12 h disturbances are due to wave-like disturbances with horizontal wavelengths longer than 1400 km and are not due to semi-diurnal migrating tides. Wave parameters, such as horizontal wavelengths, vertical wavelengths and wave periods, simulated by the model agree well with those estimated by the PANSY radar observations under the above-mentioned assumption. The parameters of the simulated waves are consistent with the dispersion relationship of the inertia-gravity wave.
