Abstract Clinical endometritis (CE) is common in post-partum dairy cows and is associated with impaired reproductive performance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of subclinical endometritis (SE) in cows clinically cured of CE on their fertility. The study was performed on 215 Holstein Friesian cows with CE diagnosed by vaginoscopy and ultrasound between 21 and 28 days after parturition. All cows were clinically examined three times at an interval of 2 weeks. Cows without signs of CE were considered cured, and endometrial samples from the uteri were collected by cytobrush to diagnose SE using cytological evaluation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) percentage. The threshold for SE was set at ≥ 5% PMNs. Intervals calving to oestrus and calving to conception, first AI pregnancy rate, pregnancy rate 200 days after artificial insemination (AI), the number of AI per pregnancy (AI/P), pregnancy loss, and culling rate were calculated. Purpose of research: The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the diagnosis and management of atypical ectopic pregnancy, with particular reference to pregnancy in the cesarean scar. The importance of early detection and medical intervention will be described, as well as the impact of advanced diagnostic techniques and modern treatments on the curability of patients.This article aims to provide valuable insights into the development of effective strategies for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of ectopic pregnancy. State of knowledge: Ectopic pregnancies account for 1-2% of all pregnancies, with the majority (90%) occurring in the fallopian tube. Less commonly, they present as ovarian, cervical or abdominal pregnancies. Advances in diagnosis and treatment have made it possible to identify rare forms such as cesarean scar pregnancy (0.15% of all pregnancies), interstitial pregnancy and recurrent ectopic pregnancy on tubal remnants. Techniques such as transvaginal ultrasound (TVS), MRI and laparoscopy have the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes. Modern interventions such as transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) and methotrexate have shown promise in terms of safety and efficacy. Conclusions: Ectopic pregnancy and its complications have a significant impact on the psycho-physical health of patients, requiring ongoing research to improve diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Future studies should focus on long-term outcomes and the coordination of multidisciplinary medical care to further improve diagnosis and treatment.

Despite its widespread use, the effects of alcohol on muscle recovery and hypertrophy are not well understood by the general public. Emerging research suggests that alcohol may have negative health effects on these factors. Understanding the interaction between alcohol consumption and resistance training is crucial for athletes and individuals aiming to optimize their fitness outcomes. The main aim of this article is to show clinicians, patients and, above all, athletes, the negative effects of alcohol on training and leading a healthy lifestyle. Abbreviated Description of the State of Knowledge: Resistance training is a proven method for increasing muscle mass and strength through the process of hypertrophy, where muscle protein synthesis (MPS) exceeds muscle protein breakdown (MPB). The mechanistic/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway plays a key role in regulating MPS and hypertrophy. Summary: Alcohol has been shown to impair muscle protein synthesis, primarily through its negative effects on the mTOR signaling pathway, which is crucial for muscle growth. Additionally, alcohol disrupts sleep quality, further hindering recovery and performance.

Introduction and Objective: Obesity represents a significant public health concern in the 21st century, with a substantial burden of disease attributable to its complications, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The objective of this review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, in the treatment of obesity and its impact on cardiometabolic risk factors. The Review and Methods: This review is based on an analysis of the scientific literature, including meta-analyses and clinical trials. The PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched for publications up to 2023. Abridged Description of the State of Knowledge: The efficacy of semaglutide in reducing body weight in patients with obesity is supported by evidence from clinical trials. Its mechanism of action includes the delay of gastric emptying and the reduction of hunger. The drug has been demonstrated to exert a beneficial effect on the lipid profile and blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The adverse effects, which are primarily gastrointestinal in nature, are typically mild and resolve with treatment. Summary: Semaglutide represents a promising therapeutic option for obese patients, offering an effective means of reducing body weight and improving cardiometabolic parameters. However, further studies are required to evaluate the long-term effects of this therapy and its application in different patient populations. Introduction and Objective: Sleep disturbances are increasingly common in the general population, posing significant public health challenges and economic burdens. Traditional treatments frequently fall short, leading to increased interest in physical activity as an alternative approach. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of exercise in improving sleep quality across various conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, Parkinson’s Disease (PD), depression and the perimenopausal period. Review and Methods: The review draws from studies, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, sourced via Google Scholar and PubMed. State of Knowledge: Research highlights the significant public health impact of sleep disturbances. Studies suggest that regular exercise can improve sleep quality across conditions like OSA, PD, depression, and menopause. Traditional treatments, such as CPAP, psychotherapy, and medications, often have limitations. As a result, there is growing interest in using physical activity as alternative therapy or a complementary approach to enhance these existing options. Conclusions: Exercise shows promise as a non-pharmacological intervention for sleep disorders, offering potential benefits for various conditions. Further research is needed to refine exercise protocols and understand its mechanisms. Integrating physical activity into treatment plans could enhance sleep quality and health outcomes alongside existing therapies.

Introduction and Objective: Physical activity is any movement using skeletal muscles. It can be classified into four main categories: occupational, household, transport and recreational. These activities can also vary in intensity. This article aims to describe how physical activity affects cancer prevention, survival rates and recovery. Review and Methods: Review and summary of studies and meta-analysis of studies available in open-source format on Google Scholar and PubMed. State of Knowledge: Extensive research shows that regular physical activity reduces the risk of several cancers, particularly breast, colon, and endometrial cancers. Epidemiological studies consistently find that more active individuals have a lower incidence of certain cancers. Physical activity is also a useful adjunct to treatment, alleviating its negative effects. The protective effect of physical activity is believed to be dose-dependent, with greater benefits from higher frequencies, durations, and intensities. Recent studies suggest that physical activity may also improve survival rates in cancer patients, particularly for prostate, colorectal, and breast cancers. Conclusions: The current data strongly supports the inclusion of regular physical activity as a key component of cancer prevention strategies. It may also be beneficial for cancer patients to enhance their chances of survival. Public health guidelines stress the importance of exercise to lower cancer risk and improve overall health.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting between 6% and 26% of women. More than 50% of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome are obese, which contributes to the development of insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia and other disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. These disorders in turn lead to weight gain and hormonal imbalance, creating a 'vicious circle' between the causes and effects of the disease. Therefore, preventing and treating obesity itself is extremely important in PCOS. A balanced diet and regular exercise will help to reduce fat. Adopting healthy eating habits and increasing physical activity has a positive effect on hormone management, improving fertility and reducing hirsutism or acne. It also helps to improve wellbeing and reduce symptoms of mental health problems. The most effective methods of treating and alleviating the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome are the implementation of a balanced diet and increased physical activity.

Introduction and Objective: There is no doubt that engaging in regular physical activity is beneficial for individuals of all ages. Pregnancy is a special time of life for most women. This period presents a unique opportunity for them to improve their lifestyle choices and adopt healthier habits such as exercise. The aim of this article is to find out if regular physical activity during pregnancy has a positive impact for both the mother and the baby. Review and Methods: Review and summary of available studies and meta-analyses found in open-access formats on Google Scholar and PubMed. State of Knowledge: The WHO defines physical activity as any bodily movement requiring energy expenditure, including during leisure, transport, work, and domestic activities. Regular exercise reduces the risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and poor health outcomes, while sedentary behavior contributes to this and burdens healthcare systems. For pregnant and postpartum women, physical movement decreases the risk of various complications, with no negative effects on birthweight or stillbirth risk. Conclusions: Studies show that physical activity decreased risk of pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, excessive gestational weight gain, delivery complications, postpartum depression and newborn complications.

The aim of this article is to review and analyze what is known about the effects of physical activity on the physical and mental health of menopausal women, and to summarize general recommendations for women at this time. Studies show that physical activity can lead to a reduction in the severity of symptoms associated with menopause. The enhanced quality of life is also due to the beneficial effects of physical activity on a woman's metabolism. Regular exercise leads to a normalization of lipid metabolism, a reduction in body fat, an improvement in bone density and, therefore, the avoidance of osteoporosis.

Introduction and Objective: Thyroid diseases constitute a significant health challenge of the 21st century. Due to the growing awareness of the accompanying symptoms and the impact of the proper functioning of the thyroid gland on the overall condition of the body, patients show increasing interest in therapeutic methods. The main aim of the article is to present the impact of physical activity and proper diet on the management of patients with hypothyroidism. Review and Methods: Review and summary of studies and meta-analysis of studies available in open-source format on Google Scholar, Web of Science and PubMed. Abbreviated Description of the State of Knowledge: Hypothyroidism is a clinical condition characterized by the insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. This hormonal deficiency leads to a generalized decrease in metabolic processes. Clinically, hypothyroidism is diagnosed based on elevated serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and decreased levels of free thyroxine (T4). Prevalent symptoms include fatigue, constipation, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression and dry skin. Effective management typically involves hormone replacement therapy with synthetic thyroxine. Summary: Hypothyroidism is a complex disease influenced by many factors. A multidisciplinary approach is recommended in its treatment, including pharmacological treatment, diet and appropriately selected physical activity. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to improve the physical and mental condition of patients.

W artykule omówione zostały wyniki badań, których celem było określenie poziomu wypalenia akademickiego wśród studentów kierunków pedagogicznych oraz dokonanie charakterystyki zjawiska i poznanie czynników, które przyczyniają się do jego rozwoju. Badania przeprowadzone zostały w strategii badań ilościowych metodą sondażu diagnostycznego na reprezentatywnej grupie 261 studentów. Wyniki badań nie wykazały wysokiego poziomu wypalenia akademickiego studentów, jednak poszczególne zmienne różnicowały grupy badanych pod względem wypalenia. Nadmierne obciążenie, duże wyczerpanie i silne napięcie okazały się czynnikami, które w największym stopniu przyczyniają się do rozwoju wypalenia akademickiego badanej populacji, a kobiety i studenci trzeciego roku studiów licencjackich byli nim najbardziej zagrożeni. Kobiety, studenci trzeciego roku oraz osoby pracujące wyjątkowo często miały poczucie obniżonej wartości studiów i cyniczny ich odbiór. Jednocześnie ocena jakości studiów była uzależniona od poziomu napięcia odczuwanego przez studentów oraz wartości, jakie przypisywali przekazywanej im wiedzy. Wyniki badań mogą stanowić źródło wiedzy i inspiracji dla nauczycieli akademickich oraz osób zarządzających kształceniem na poziomie wyższym.

This study aimed to determine the effect of wet ageing time (4, 14 and 21 days) on the quality of sous-vide cooked beef products. The research material consisted of longissimus lumborum muscles obtained from the carcasses of Polish Holstein-Friesian bulls (n = 9, average age at slaughter 22 months). The meat was wet-aged at 4 ± 1 °C for 4, 14 and 21 days post-mortem. The analyses were conducted on uncooked samples (colour and pH) and after the sous-vide cooking (60 °C, 4 h) (colour, cooking loss, Warner–Bratzler shear force, texture profile analysis and sensory assessment). It was found that ageing decreased redness, yellowness and chroma (p < 0.05) in the cross-section area of sous-vide cooked beef. The values of shear force, hardness, springiness and chewiness decreased during ageing (p < 0.05). The samples were scored similarly in sensory assessment, except for tenderness which was scored higher (p < 0.01) in the products obtained from 14 and 21 d aged beef compared to 4 d aged samples. Overall, the findings highlighted that, also in the production of sous-vide cooked beef, longissimus lumborum muscles should be aged for at least 14 days.

During storage, raw meat is exposed to many external factors, which cause visible changes on the surface of the meat and which affect its water-holding capacity. This study aimed to determine the effect of oxygen content in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) used for storing fresh pork on the colour, pH, value and water-holding capacity during refrigerated storage. The study also analysed the dynamics of changes in colour using the colour difference (ΔE) coefficient and sensory quality. In the study, slices of pork loin were packed in MAP using the following gas compositions: 55% O2/40% CO2/5% N2 and 75% O2/20%, CO2/5% N2; they were then stored for 15 days at a temperature of 4 °C. The colour of pork stored in MAP was significantly affected by time, but not by the proportion of oxygen. During storage, the meat’s lightness (L*), yellowness (b*), chroma, and hue angle increased, whereas its redness index (a*/b*) decreased. Significant differences in colour between freshly packed and stored samples were noted after days 7 and 9 in MAP containing 55% and 75% oxygen, respectively. The values of pH, free water, and purge and cooking loss were not affected by gas concentration but changed over time. Lowering the oxygen content from 75% to 55% in MAP opens the possibility of reducing the oxygen demand from the meat industry without compromising the quality of the meat.

Introduction and objective A neurodegenerative disease, which is primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) through damage of the optic nerve, leads to irreversible loss of vision. Sirtuins are responsible for regulating the metabolism involved in brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Previous studies revealed that upregulation of SIRT1 has an important protective effect against various ocular diseases, such as cataract, retinal degeneration, optic neuritis and uveitis. Moreover, some experimental studies in animal models demonstrated a neuroprotective effect of SIRT1 against retinal and optic nerve damage. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore, for the first time, rs7895833 polymorphism of SIRT1 gene and its influence on the risk occurrence and progression of POAG in the Polish population. Material and methods The study included 187 glaucoma patients and 171 controls.DNA was isolated from peripheral blood. Gene polymorphism was analyzed by restriction of the fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (RFLP-PCR). Results A statistically significant correlation was observed between the AG variant of the rs7895833 polymorphism of the SIRT1, and the occurrence of POAG. Moreover, a statistically significant correlation was observed between the rs7895833 polymorphism of the SIRT1, depending on the nerve fibre layer analyzer (GDx) (p = 0.034). Conclusions Analysis of the rs7895833 polymorphism SIRT1 gene in the Polish population with POAG shows a higher prevalence of heterozygote A/G polymorphism than the control group, and the correlation between the nerve fibre layer analyzer (GDx) and SIRT1 gene polymorphism, which suggest that variant A / G polymorphism rs7895833 of the SIRT1 gene may have a protective effect on the occurrence of JPOK in the Polish population.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and biomarkers of lipid and protein peroxidation in the blood serum of dogs with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The study was conducted on 36 intact male dogs of various breeds. The dogs were assigned to two groups: BPH group (n = 18) and non-affected group (n = 18). Blood samples were collected from the cephalic vein. The antioxidant status of the serum was assessed using TAC. The levels of bityrosine, formylkynurenine and SH-groups were used as protein peroxidation biomarkers and the level of radical cations of N,N-diethyl-paraphenylene diamine (RC-DEPPD) was used as a marker for lipid peroxidation. TAC and the concentrations of SH-groups and RC-DEPPD in the serum were determined spectrophotometrically, the concentrations of bityrosine and formylokynurenine, were determined using spectrofluorimetric methods. Results The mean value of TAC in the serum was significantly lower (P = 0.01) in BPH dogs than in non-affected dogs (3.10 ± 0.56 vs 4.20 ± 1.60 μmol/g protein). Mean levels of protein and lipid oxidation biomarkers showed a trend towards oxidative imbalance, but there were no statistically significant differences between dogs with BPH and controls (P > 0.05). Conclusion In conclusion, significantly lower serum TAC in dogs with BPH compared to non-affected dogs suggests a potential involvement of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of BPH in dogs. More studies are needed to clarify the role of oxidative stress in the development of BPH in dogs.

This study investigated the effects of dietary replacement of soybean meal (SBM) with graded levels of pea seeds (PS) on the gastrointestinal function of turkeys. Seeds of 2 pea varieties, a colored-flowered variety and a white-flowered variety (CFP and WFP, respectively) were fed to 56-d-old birds for 8 wk. A total of 539 female Hybrid turkeys were allocated to 7 groups, each group consisted of 7 pens with 11 birds per pen. The experiment had a 2-factorial design, with 3 dietary inclusion levels of PS (100, 200 and 300 g/kg) and 2 pea varieties (CFP and WFP). The control group (diets without PS) was compared with CFP and WFP treatments by simple contrast analysis. In comparison with CFP seeds, WFP seeds contained 7-fold less tannins (0.67 vs. 4.66 g/kg) and less non-starch polysaccharides (NSP, 117.8 vs. 132.7 g/kg), but more trypsin inhibitors (1.34 vs. 0.98 g/kg) and starch (489 vs. 455 g/kg). A rise in the PS content of diets from 100 to 200 and 300 g/kg increased the weight of the small intestine (P = 0.031) and the dry matter (DM) content of intestinal digesta (P = 0.001), but it had no effect on the pH of digesta. Only the highest PS content differentiated the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the small intestinal digesta (WFP > CFP, P = 0.008), whereas PS did not cause any changes in the morphological parameters of the small intestinal mucosa. The dietary inclusion of PS had no influence on the levels of acetate, butyrate, putrefactive SCFAs or total SCFAs in the cecal contents. Apart from increasing the activities of β-glucosidase (P = 0.017) and β-galactosidase (P = 0.025), pea varieties did not affect the activities of the analyzed cecal microbial enzymes. However, CFP seeds decreased the DM content (P = 0.041) and increased the pH of cecal digesta, compared with WFP seeds (P = 0.013). The results of this study, pointing to a few differences in the functional parameters of the small intestine and cecum, indicate that tannins are not a factor differentiating the suitability of CFP and WFP seeds in the nutrition of finisher turkeys. The inclusion of PS at 200 and 300 g/kg of the diet reduces the content of SBM and wheat in turkey diets, which has a positive effect on gastrointestinal function.

Abstract Background Ketoconazole, an antifungal agent, adversely affects spermatogenesis in rodents, but knowledge on adverse effects of prolonged administration of ketoconazole on the fertility of male dogs is lacking. A case of reversible infertility with azoospermia in a male American Staffordshire terrier treated with ketoconazole is reported here. Case presentation A seven-year old male American Staffordshire terrier treated for 3 months with ketoconazole for a persistent Malassezia dermatitis displayed reduced libido and mating of 3 bitches had been unsuccessful. The dog was presented at the clinic 40 days after the treatment had been stopped. At first presentation, low libido and complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia) associated with low testosterone level were found. Repeated examinations revealed that sperm quality and testosterone level had restored 100 days after ketoconazole had been withdrawn. Thereafter, the dog successfully mated 2 bitches. Conclusion The treatment with ketoconazole for 3 months may have led to reversible infertility characterized by azoospermia. Therefore, owners of stud dogs should be informed of this risk prior to initiating such treatment and in case of infertility, previous treatment with ketoconazole should be considered as a possible cause.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effects of early and short-term administration of an antibiotic or feeding a diet containing a coccidiostat on gastrointestinal function and the blood levels of selected hormones in young turkeys. A total of 1540 Hybrid Converter turkeys were allocated to 4 groups on the day of hatch. Each group consisted of 7 pens with 55 birds per pen. Group ENR was treated with enrofloxacin for the first 5 d of life, group DOX received doxycycline for 5 d and group MON was administered monensin for 84 d. CON birds served as a control group without any antibiotic treatment or MON administration. An analysis of the activity of bacterial enzymes revealed that the cecal microbiota of turkeys were less sensitive to MON than to the other 2 antibiotics. Turkeys subjected to ENR and DOX treatments were characterized by lower (P < 0.05) extracellular activity of cecal bacterial β-glucosidase, compared with groups CON and MON. The extracellular activity of cecal bacterial α-galactosidase and β-galactosidase decreased significantly in response to the experimental treatment with DOX (P < 0.05 vs. CON). Turkeys treated with ENR had higher total activity of bacterial β-galactosidase than those administered DOX or MON. Despite the differences in the enzymatic activity of microbiota, the use of antibiotics did not affect the concentrations of total short-chain fatty acids or ammonia in the cecal digesta of turkeys. A diet containing MON and the early administration of ENR or DOX induced an increase in blood noradrenaline levels (P = 0.004) in 56-day-old turkeys. Early DOX use increased plasma cortisol concentrations (P < 0.001) and decreased plasma serotonin levels (P = 0.006) in 56-day-old turkeys. Over the entire experiment (up to 12 wk of age), the use of MON improved the BW gain of turkeys (P = 0.055) and feed conversion (P = 0.016), compared with the DOX treatment.

During meat storage, changes in the meat colour occur, making it less intensive and red. The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of oregano EO applied directly on the surface of fresh pork on its quality, with a special emphasis on the colour. In the study, an oregano essential oil in concentrations of 0.5% and 1.0% (v/v) was used on the surface of pork loins (1.5% v/w) packed in a modified atmosphere during 15-d storage at 4 °C. The application of oregano EO in the concentration of 1.0% increased lightness and hue and decreased redness compared to the control, whereas the concentration of 0.5% did not affect the pork colour. EO did not affect pH, free water content, purge and cooking losses, cooked meat juiciness and tenderness; however, it gave the meat a distinctive herbal aroma and taste. The antimicrobial effect of 1% EO was noted only on the 15th day. Therefore, the application of oregano essential oil is not recommended to protect the colour of raw pork nor to prolong its shelf-life; however, it might be used to obtain a new product with a specific herbal aroma and taste, with modifications in water-holding capacity of the meat.

Abstract Background Fruit pomaces are by-products rich in polyphenol compounds and dietary fiber. They seem to play an important role in regulating the gut microbiota, morphology and physiology. The aim of this study was to assess whether apple (A), blackurrant (B) or strawberry (S) pomaces could be suitable ingredients in broiler diets and their effect on gut health. A total of 480 male broilers were randomly allotted to 8 dietary treatments with lower (3%-L) or higher (6%-H) dietary fiber content: two control groups (CL/CH), two A diets (AL/AH), two B diets (BL/BH), two S diets (SL/SH). Diet and fruit pomaces were chemically analyzed to assess polyphenol concentration and fibre fraction content. After the evaluation of growth performance, 6 birds/group were slaughtered at 35 days of age. Morphometric and histopathological investigations were performed on duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Excreta were collected to perform microbiota evaluation by 16S DNA sequencing. Weight, viscosity, enzymatic activity, short chain fatty acid (SCFAs) and ammonia concentration were determined in ileum and/or ceca content. Results A pomace and A diets showed the lowest polyphenol content and the highest content of soluble fibre fraction. No significant differences were observed for growth performance, gut morphometry and histopathology (P > 0.05). Dietary fruit pomace inclusion increased the weight of ileum and ceca and the ileum digesta viscosity (P 0.05). The research hypothesis postulated that the optimal dietary inclusion levels and ratios of lysine (Lys), arginine (Arg), and methionine (Met) can increase the growth potential of hybrid turkeys and limit metabolic disorders that weaken immune function. The experiment was carried out in a full rearing cycle, from 1 to 16 wk of age, in a two-factorial randomized design with 3 levels of Arg and 2 levels of Met (90, 100 and 110% of Arg, and 30 or 45% of Met, relative to the content of dietary Lys), with 6 groups of 8 replicates per group and 18 turkeys per replicate. In the first and second month of rearing, a significant dietary Arg-by-Met interaction was noted for daily feed intake and body weight gain, and a more beneficial effect was exerted by higher Met content and medium Arg content. Throughout the experiment, the higher dietary Met level increased the final body weight (BW) of turkeys (P = 0.001). Different dietary Arg levels had no influence on the growth performance of turkeys, but the lowest level decreased dressing yield (P = 0.001), and the highest level increased the percentage of breast muscles in the final BW of turkeys (P = 0.003). The lowest Arg level (90% of Lys content) undesirably increased the concentration of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 (P = 0.028) and decreased globulin concentration (P = 0.001) in the blood plasma of turkeys. The higher dietary Met level (45% of Lys content) increased plasma albumin concentration (P = 0.016). It can be concluded that higher dietary levels of Met (45 vs. 30% of Lys content) and Arg (100 and 110 vs. 90% of Lys content) have a more beneficial effect on the growth performance and immune status of turkeys.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of Listeria monocytogenes growth in cooked sausages produced in the same meat processing plant without or with a direct nitrite addition (alternatively cured, AC, and nitrite cured, control). The AC and control sausages were inoculated with a mix of three L. monocytogenes strains. Products (n = 24 sausages for each product type) were vacuum-packed and stored for 10 days at 6 °C. Residual nitrite and salt contents, water activity and the number of L. monocytogenes were determined in products. A higher nitrite content was found in the control (44.9 mg/kg) compared with AC (12.1 mg/kg). Significantly higher L. monocytogenes counts at the 6th and the 8th day were noted in AC sausages, however at the 10th day they did not differ significantly between the treatments (2.96 and 3.27 log10 CFU/g in the control and AC, respectively). AC sausages showed a growth potential value of 0.64, which indicates the possibility of L. monocytogenes growth on the surface of alternatively cured products. In contrast, a growth potential value of 0.21 was found in control sausages, which indicates that nitrite cured sausages did not support the pathogen growth at 6 °C.

Introduction The Global Platform for the Prevention of Autoimmune Diabetes-SINT1A Study is designed as a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicentre, multinational, primary prevention study aiming to assess whether daily administration of Bifidobacterium infantis from age 7 days to 6 weeks until age 12 months to children with elevated genetic risk for type 1 diabetes reduces the cumulative incidence of beta-cell autoantibodies in childhood.Methods and analysis Infants aged 7 days to 6 weeks from Germany, Poland, Belgium, UK and Sweden are eligible for study participation if they have a >10.0% expected risk for developing multiple beta-cell autoantibodies by age 6 years as determined by genetic risk score or family history and HLA genotype. Infants are randomised 1:1 to daily administration of B. infantis EVC001 or placebo until age 12 months and followed for a maximum of 5.5 years thereafter. The primary outcome is the development of persistent confirmed multiple beta-cell autoantibodies. Secondary outcomes are (1) Any persistent confirmed beta-cell autoantibody, defined as at least one confirmed autoantibody in two consecutive samples, including insulin autoantibodies, glutamic acid decarboxylase, islet tyrosine phosphatase 2 or zinc transporter 8, (2) Diabetes, (3) Transglutaminase autoantibodies associated with coeliac disease, (4) Respiratory infection rate in first year of life during supplementation and (5) Safety. Exploratory outcomes include allergy, antibody response to vaccines, alterations of the gut microbiome or blood metabolome, stool pH and calprotectin.Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the local ethical committees of the Technical University Munich, Medical Faculty, the Technische Universität Dresden, the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, the Medical University of Warsaw, EC Research UZ Leuven and the Swedish ethical review authority. The pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in dogs is still not fully understood. Some studies suggest that oxidative stress may have a potential role in the pathogenesis of BPH in dogs. Age‐related hormonal changes may activate a chronic inflammatory response in the prostate. This causes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and results in oxidative stress. Excessive production of ROS results in DNA damage and hyperplastic transformation of prostatic cells. The use of antioxidants for improvement of treatment outcomes for canine PBH has been discussed. Further research is needed on the importance of oxidative stress in the development of BPH in dogs and the usefulness of antioxidants in the supportive treatment of this condition. During storage, raw meat is exposed to many external factors, which cause visible changes on the surface of the meat and which affect its water-holding capacity. This study aimed to determine the effect of oxygen content in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) used for storing fresh pork on the colour, pH, value and water-holding capacity during refrigerated storage. The study also analysed the dynamics of changes in colour using the colour difference (ΔE) coefficient and sensory quality. In the study, slices of pork loin were packed in MAP using the following gas compositions: 55% O2/40% CO2/5% N2 and 75% O2/20%, CO2/5% N2; they were then stored for 15 days at a temperature of 4 °C. The colour of pork stored in MAP was significantly affected by time, but not by the proportion of oxygen. During storage, the meat's lightness (L*), yellowness (b*), chroma, and hue angle increased, whereas its redness index (a*/b*) decreased. Significant differences in colour between freshly packed and stored samples were noted after days 7 and 9 in MAP containing 55% and 75% oxygen, respectively. The values of pH, free water, and purge and cooking loss were not affected by gas concentration but changed over time. Lowering the oxygen content from 75% to 55% in MAP opens the possibility of reducing the oxygen demand from the meat industry without compromising the quality of the meat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Haemorrhagic enteritis (HE) of turkeys was first described in 1937 in the USA, while in Poland it was first diagnosed in 1987. Polish haemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV) isolates are usually low pathogenic and trigger a subclinical disease. Unfortunately, even the low- pathogenic HEV strains cause severe immunosuppression leading to secondary bacterial infections and huge economic losses. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the influence of Met on HEV infected turkeys immune response can be differentiated by both its level and source. Met is one of the amino acids that not only play a nutritional role but also participate in and regulate key metabolic pathways and immune response. In our study, the birds were assigned to 4 dietary treatments which differed in Met levels (0.55 and 0.78% in weeks 1–4 of age and 0.45 and 0.65% in weeks 5–8 of age, respectively) and sources (DL-methionine (DLM) or DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (MHA)). Results The HEV added the percentage of CD4+ cells and decreased the percentage of IgM+ cells in the blood, spleen and caecal tonsils (CTs) of turkeys. In addition, it increased the percentage of CD4+CD25+ cells in blood, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) level in plasma. The higher dose of Met led to a significant decrease in the percentages of CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+IL-6+ cell subpopulations in the blood of HEV-infected and uninfected turkeys and to an increase in the percentage of IgM+ B cells in CTs. Turkeys administered feeds with an increased Met content displayed a decrease in plasma IL-6 levels and an increase in plasma IgA levels. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that HEV infection impairs the immune function in turkeys. Met content in the feed has a moderate effect on the immune response in HEV-infected turkeys. The source of this amino acid appears not be as important as its dose, because value of the analysed parameters did not differ significantly between turkeys receiving feeds with DLM or MHA. In the uninfected turkeys, the higher by 40% (than recommended by NRC) level of Met in the feeds had a positive effect on humoral immunity parameters.

Introduction: Significant improvement of sperm motility within one month effected by oral supplementation of selenium and vitamin E was described in four infertile male dogs which failed to conceive in their last three matings with different bitches. Material and Methods: The dogs (a Golden Retriever, an English Cocker Spaniel, and two Tibetan Mastiffs) were supplemented daily with selenium (Se) (0.6 mg/kg organic Se yeast) and vitamin E (vit. E) (5 mg/kg) per os for 60 days. Semen was collected on days 0, 30, 60, and 90. The sperm concentration and motility parameters were evaluated by the CASA system, sperm morphology was explored by Diff-Quick staining, and live and dead spermatozoa were differentiated by eosin/nigrosin staining. The concentrations of Se and vit. E were measured in peripheral blood serum on semen collection days. Results: Before administration, the concentrations of Se in blood plasma were low (86.0–165.0 µg/L). After 30 days of treatment there was an observable improvement in total and progressive sperm motility and kinematic parameters (VAP, VSK, VCL, ALH, BCF, and RAPID). The percentages of live and normal morphology sperm cells were also higher. There was also an observable increase in Se and vitamin E concentrations in blood serum. Bitches were successfully mated and delivered four to six puppies. Conclusion: Supplementation with Se and vit. E improved rapid sperm motility and restored fertility in infertile dogs with low Se status.

INTRODUCTION: A pain response is an inevitable symptom in trauma patients and requires to undertake a medical intervention in pre-hospital conditions. In the Polish system of medical rescue, there are teams including a doctor or without one where a paramedic is the main person to make decisions. Due to lack of standard procedures and a pain rating scale attached to the documents of medical rescue teams, the authors of the research attempted to analyse the administration of analgesics in trauma patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research was conducted on 266 trauma patients selected from 2307 interventions of Emergency Medical Service in Łęczyca in 2016. ANOVA, one-way analysis of variance, and T-tests for unpaired samples were applied. All the results were found significant at p < 0,05. RESULTS: The study was carried out on 150 males and 100 females. The average age of the the trauma patients was 77 (SD ± 38). Rescue teams were sent to trauma patients at 71-80 and 51-60 age groups. In 64,7 % (n=172) of the cases, help was provided in rural areas, whereas in 35,3 % (n=94) cases - urban areas. Most frequently, the patients were injured as a result of traffic accidents, activities while carrying out farm work as well as cut wounds and self-mutilation. Anaesthesia was applied in 120 cases (45,11%), mostly in patients between the age of 81 and 90 and most rarely in children. A total number of painkiller administration was higher in basic Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) than in specialized ones (S-EMS) (84 vs. 55). No statistically significant relation between the choice of the medicine and the injury type was discovered (Kruskal-Wallis; p=0,82). The drug used most often was Ketoprofenum (n=87) and Fentanylum (n=35). There was significant difference in the administration of analgesic drugs between BEMS and S-EMS teams (χ2; p=0,042). CONCLUSIONS: Over half of the trauma patients was not secured by administering analgesic drugs in pre-hospital conditions. The number of analgesic drugs used in B-EMS and S-EMS teams was diverse. Patients were given nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) more often than opioids.

The hypothesis of the research was the assumption, that manganese nanoparticles can affect the body in the same way as macromolecules. Their smaller size and greater biological reactivity will potentially allow the Mn addition to the diet to be reduced and, consequently, less excretion of this element into the environment. The aim of the study was to determine whether the use of Mn nanoparticles would make it possible to reduce the level of this micronutrient added to turkey diets without adversely affecting redox reactions in cells and epigenetic changes. The experiment was conducted on six groups with 10 replications, in a two-factor design with three dosages of manganese: 100, 50 and 10 mg/kg, and two sources: manganese oxide (MnO) and manganese nanoparticles (NP-Mn2O3). Markers of oxidative stress determined in the blood, that is, the concentration of lipid hydroperoxides, malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl derivatives, 3-nitrotyrosine, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, ceruloplasmin, total antioxidant status, albumin and vitamin C content. The level of epigenetic changes in the blood was determined by analysing global DNA methylation. In the experiment, in which the diet of turkeys was supplemented with two forms of Mn (MnO or NP-Mn2O3) at three dosages: 100, 50 and 10 mg/kg, the 10 mg/kg dose, especially in the form of NP-Mn2O3, induced lipid oxidation reactions to the greatest extent. Irrespective of the dosage of Mn in the turkey diet, Mn in the form of NP-Mn2O3 was found to reduce protein nitration more than Mn in the form of MnO. Reducing the Mn dosage in the diet from 100 to 50 mg/kg and then to 10 mg/kg is unfavourable because proportionally increases protein and DNA oxidation in cells, decreases the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and increases the level of glutathione. Reducing the dosage from 100 to 10 mg/kg increases global DNA methylation. The reduction of the Mn level, regardless of the form used, is disadvantageous, because it weakens the defense of the antioxidant system, which consequently can induce oxidative processes in the cells. Although Mn in the form of NP-Mn2O3 reduce protein nitration better than in MnO form, the use of manganese nanoparticles in turkey feeding (even in lower doses) requires further study.

Abstract Background The results of experiments involving broiler chickens and turkeys indicate that increased dietary methionine (Met) levels may improve the antioxidant protection of tissues in fast-growing birds. This is an important consideration since viral infections induce oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that turkey diets with increased Met content can suppress oxidation processes induced by infection caused by the haemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV), and that the noted effect is determined by the chemical form of this amino acid: DL-methionine (DLM) or DL-hydroxy analogue of Met (MHA). Results Dietary Met content above 40% higher than the level recommended by the NRC (1994) intensified lipid peroxidation in the small intestine, leading to an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid peroxide (LOOH) levels, but it also stimulated antioxidant mechanisms in the blood and liver of turkeys infected with HEV. In comparison with DLM, MHA contributed to more severe symptoms of oxidative stress, such as elevated MDA levels in the intestines, and a decrease in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity and ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). Conclusions In HEV-infected turkeys, diets with increased Met content did not exert a clear antioxidant effect, which was noted in uninfected birds. The prooxidant activity of Met observed in the small intestinal wall was suppressed in the blood and liver of turkeys, most likely due to intensified synthesis of uric acid and glutathione. In comparison with MHA, DLM had a more beneficial influence on the analysed parameters of the redox status in the small intestine, blood and liver of turkeys.

The effects of acid whey concentrates after nano- or ultrafiltration on the nutritional and physiological indices of rats were analysed. The ultrafiltration concentrate was characterized by a higher protein and lactoferrin content, and lower lactose content compared to the nanofiltration concentrate. In vivo, a diet incorporating the ultrafiltration concentrate instead of the nanofiltration concentrate seemed to be more beneficial to rats in terms of a good growth rate and utilization of the diet, higher concentration of butyric acid and lower concentration of putrefactive short chain fatty acids in the caecum, increased bacterial enzyme activities in the caecum, lower blood glucose levels and reduced levels of triglycerides, and greater antioxidant capacity of blood serum. Both acid whey concentrates fulfilled the recommendations for powder intended for direct consumption or further processing in food production and showed potential health benefits.

As a new experience in their biography, emigration and return migration became a source of formal, non-formal and often informal learning which provided the respondents with new skills and knowledge, allowed them to develop certain characteristics of their personality and change the way in which they perceive reality, which inspired them to reconsider their philosophy of life, occupation, education and redefine their values and beliefs.The article is based on my research on the process of acquisition and capitalisation of educational and professional experience by Polish migrants and returnees. The aim of the study was to describe and further explore the process and to attempt to understand the motives behind educational and professional activity, both abroad and after the return to Poland, as well as their significance for returnees.

Official analysis describes Polish society as passive, having low levels of civic awareness and social trust, with lack of wide civic education and small openness of institutions to citizens. This diagnosis forces one to think about the conditions of civic education in Poland. This paper contains an analysis of main institutions of formal adult education. An attempt will be made to answer the question to what extent and what kind of civic education related information is transmitted in main institutions of formal adult education.
