Objective: To determine the overall survival of patients on hemodialysis and prognostic factors associated. Methods: A retrospective cohort of patients who entered a chronic hemodialysis program at the Centro Nacional de Salud Renal of EsSALUD from 1994 and 2014. A total of 1789 patients were included, and data was gathered from the SIG version 2.0, which stores charts since 1994. The survival of the cohort and prognostic factors were evaluated. Results: Mean age was 49.7 ± 17.4 years; 779 (43.5%) were females; 393 (22%) were diabetics, and 592 (33.2%) had blood hypertension; 1408 (83%) had an arterio-venous fistula; 147 (8.16%) had positive serology for hepatitis C; 999 (55.84%) were admitted from 1994 to 2003 and 790 (44,16%) from 2003 to 2014. Survival of the cohort did not change by sex, presence of hypertension, serology at admission, or decade of admission. Multivariate analysis identified the age group above 50 years [HR: 3.72 (IC95%: 3.07 -- 4.50) p = 0.000] and use of catheters at admission to the chronic dialysis program [HR: 1.37 (IC95%: 1.07 -- 1.76): p = 0.010] as independent factors for lower survival. Conclusions: The survival was not affected by the decade of admission but by advanced age and use of catheters in the 20-year follow-up period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a narrative of our experience in analyzing and merging data files provided to us by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). In the paper, we propose a scheme of merging data files by means of Structured Query Language (SQL, pronounced as "sequel"). Although, the narrative of our experiences using this merging scheme could have been extended to any number of data files, the aim of this work was to merge only three EQAO data files. Via this merge process, we were able to gain meaningful information and facilitate the analysis of EQAO data to answer our research questions. By using SQL queries, our approach was not only to analyze the available data files but also to construct a narrative about viewing and handling data contained in the files.

Background: Wizards of Motion is a program of curriculum delivery through which experts in Kinesiology introduce grade 7 students to applications of physics for human movement. The program is linked closely to Ministry of Education curriculum requirements but includes human movement applications and data analysis experiences. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' head safety knowledge and attitudes toward helmet use after participating in the program. Methods: Data were collected from five grade 7 classrooms. Two classrooms (n = 37) receiving the program, while three classrooms, (n = 37) formed the control group (no intervention). Results on the Knowledge Test, and the Student Helmet Use Questionnaire were compared between intervention and control students. Results: A significant pre-post change in level of knowledge scores was observed in the intervention group. Likewise, intervention group students showed a significant increase in their intention to wear a helmet in future. Discussion: The successful program delivery illustrated the usefulness of linking public health promotion to standard classroom curriculum. Translation to Health Education Practice: This program exemplified the fundamental elements of knowledge translation and knowledge development, and is therefore recommended as a positive approach to delivering the public health message of helmet use for head safety. This study evaluated the level of change in students' knowledge of and attitudes toward healthy lifestyle behaviors and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) following implementation of a Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Module in Grade 5 science classes. Two classes of students (n[subscript 1] = 39) were identified as the intervention group and two classes (n[subscript 2] = 31) were designated as controls. The intervention group participated in the module initially, whereas the control groups participated after the data collection was completed. A two-group, pre-post comparison design was used to evaluate results on both a knowledge test and an attitude questionnaire. The results indicated that although both the intervention and the control groups began with similar knowledge and attitudes toward CVD and healthy behaviors, the intervention group demonstrated an improved level of knowledge and attitudes. Further research is needed to determine whether this CVD module could provide a sustained impact on adoption of healthy behaviors among adolescents.

This chapter reports a study that examines the differential effects of gender in teacher quality evaluations among Colombian students. Men and women rated teacher performance differently. Gender can be a moderating variable that better predicts the outcomes of such evaluations compared to commitment or academic performance.

This study explored the effects of no braces, softshell (AE), and semi-rigid (T1) ankle braces on time to complete a modified agility task, as well as lower extremity muscle activity and impulse during the change of direction component of the task. Thirty-nine healthy, active individuals completed a modified agility task under the three brace conditions. Time to complete the modified agility task, along with mean surface electromyographic activity (sEMG) and impulse during the deceleration and propulsive phases of the task were measured. There were no significant differences across conditions with respect to sEMG or impulse measures during the deceleration or propulsive phases. There was a significant change in time to complete the modified agility task, F(2,76) = 17.242, p< 0.001, ηp2 = 0.312. Post-hoc analysis revealed a significant increase in time to complete the modified agility task when wearing the AE (0.16 (95% CI, 0.062 to 0.265) seconds, p< 0.001) and T1 (0.20 (95% CI, 0.113 to 0.286) seconds, p< 0.001) ankle braces compared to no braces. It appears that performance on a modified agility task may be diminished when wearing ankle braces, although sEMG activity and impulse are unaffected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to evaluate the preliminary psychometric properties of four instruments related to the measures of "Determinants of Success in Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) in Institutions of Higher Education (HEI´s)". The sample was N = 150 participants, made up of academics, administrators, and researchers from Latin American HEIs. The factorial composition was estimated using unweighted ordinal least squares extraction with direct oblimin rotation and reliability estimation. It was found that the instruments have a structure consistent with the theory (α> 0,90), concluding about their usability and applicability to collect data regarding the determinants of success in KMS in HEI´s. As a result, four valid and reliable instruments were obtained, whose components represent the proposed constructs and have high internal consistency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural design of flexible footbridges requires a thorough understanding of pedestrian-induced vibration such that their dynamic behavior is accurately predicted. Human-induced vibration creates complicated ground reaction forces that contribute to human–structure interaction in the footbridges. It, therefore, becomes a significant challenge to the bridge designers to accurately estimate the moving pedestrian load on the footbridges during the design phase. This article examines the issues of human–structure interaction in slender pedestrian bridges and aims to analyze the walking pattern of the pedestrian from human-induced vibration data of the bridge. A wavelet-based time–frequency decomposition technique is adopted to extract the walking pattern of the pedestrian followed by time-series analysis of the walking pattern to develop a statistical model of pedestrian-induced vibration. Full-scale testing is conducted on a footbridge to validate the proposed technique under a wide range of pedestrian excitation. An experimental study is conducted to demonstrate the proposed method using the pedestrian's walking on a force plate monitored by video cameras and vibration sensors. This study examined the effect of isometric cervical strength and impact location of the hockey helmet in mitigating the risk of concussions for two different mechanisms of injury from a fall during head impact simulation testing. Isometric cervical strength was measured on 25 female hockey players to compute and model neck strength on a mechanical neckform. A dual-rail vertical drop system with a helmet mounted on a surrogate headform simulated the mechanisms of injury causing concussions on female ice hockey players. Measures of peak linear acceleration and risk of injury due to a head collision (GSI) were used to assess the magnitude of the head impact due to a fall across three neck strength measures (weak, average, strong), three helmet locations (front, rear, side), and two mechanisms of injury (direct, whiplash+impact). A three-way ANOVA revealed a significant main effect for impact mechanism on the magnitude of peak linear acceleration and GSI, with the whiplash+impact mechanism generating significantly greater peak linear acceleration and GSI than the direct impact mechanism. A significant two-way interaction effect was found between impact location and mechanism of injury on peak linear acceleration measures, with the direct impact on the side location generating significantly greater peak linear acceleration than the frontal location. On the contrary, the whiplash+impact mechanism revealed that the frontal impact location produced significantly greater peak linear acceleration than the side location. Many individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) do not participate in regular physical activity and exhibit a sedentary lifestyle leading to obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and muscular atrophy, among others. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a 6-week progressive and combined training program on muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance of young adults with moderate global delay. Three, one-hour sessions per week, for 6 weeks, involved full body resistance and cardiorespiratory training. A 10 maximum-repetition (RM) seated chest and leg press performance, as well as Legers 20m shuttle run were administered at the pre-, mid- and post- times. The progressive training principle was applied after the mid-test. The results showed significant improvements in muscular strength and cardiorespiratory endurance confirming that combined and progressive training protocol resulted in faster gains as compared to past approaches that involved programs that were less intense but longer in duration. Primary objective: Recent findings suggest breathing may negatively affect performance after concussion. The aim of the study was to examine group differences between individuals with and without post-concussion syndrome (PCS) in end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) and respiratory rate (RR) during neurocognitive and physical tasks. Hypothesis: Individuals in the PCS group will have elevated ETCO2 and lower RR compared to the control group. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was used in which a capnography unit collected ETCO2 and RR breathing data from 22 participants (control = 17; PCS = 5) during rest, the completion of the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (ImPACT) battery and while slow and fast walking. Four repeated measures mixed factorial ANOVAs, with an alpha level set at p ≤ 0.05, were used to examine group and task differences. Results: Both groups displayed similar breathing responses to cognitive and physical stress; however, PCS participants had significantly elevated ETCO2 throughout the study (during rest, the ImPACT and while walking) compared to the control. Conversely, no significant group differences were found in RR. Conclusion: Cerebral physiological alterations and deficits in the autonomic nervous system may cause abnormal ETCO2 in individuals after concussion. Primary objective: Persistent concussion symptoms (PCS) affect 10-30% of individuals after sports-related concussion. This study evaluated the effect of exercise-based rehabilitation on symptom scores, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cognitive functions and static balance in a sample of participants with PCS. Research design: One group pre-test post-test pilot study. Methods and procedure: Nine participants with PCS received a structured exercise-based rehabilitation program. Changes in symptom scores, BDNF, cognitive functions and measures of static balance were used to evaluate the utility of the exercise program. Main outcome and results: The results of this pilot study indicate a significant improvement in symptom scores following treatment, as well as some associated benefits in regards to cognitive function and static balance. BDNF levels in the participants with PCS within this study are notably lower than in a previous study on healthy controls. Conclusions: The preliminary evidence reported in the current pilot study is clinically relevant as our findings suggest exercise-based treatments may improve PCS outcomes in a more favourable manner than rest-based treatment. This study examined the effect of a spring-loaded cane stiffness reduction on upper and lower extremity ground reaction forces in time and frequency domain during cane-aided walking. Twenty-nine participants walked five times over two force plates with a spring-loaded cane set at four different stiffnesses and T-scope knee brace set at 30° of knee flexion to simulate a foot injury. Time-frequency domain analyses revealed an increase in ground reaction forces at the simulated injured foot and a decrease in ground reaction forces at the hand via the shaft of the cane for each spring loaded-cane stiffness reduction during walking. The results build on existing literature and highlight the use of spring-loaded canes, braking and propulsive ground reaction force measures, and frequency domain analysis to more accurately assess and monitor the rehabilitation and prevention of upper and lower extremity injuries during cane-aided walking. The aim of the present study was to assess the predictive power of personality traits and perceived social support on homesickness in college students. The study would be characterized as non-experimental, transactional, fieldwork and transversal correlational-causal. A total of 228 college students aged 16 to 25 years, in their first academic period in public and private universities of Caracas, Venezuela participated. Measurements included the Homesickness Scale by Archer et al., Goldberg's Personality Inventory and the Perceived Social Support Inventory by Dunn et al. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression. Results indicate that homesickness can be inversely predicted by friends support, neuroticism and religious support variables; attachment to home, by neuroticism and religious support variables. Nordic walking (NW) may represent a nonpharmacological treatment for individuals with osteoarthritis who refrain from exercise due to physical stress and coinciding feeling of exhaustion. This study examined if NW has a positive effect on aerobic capacity (VO2max) and intensity (time to completion) of exercise, rate of perceived exertion (Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale) and pain (Visual Analog Pain Scale) in elderly adults with osteoarthritis. Six females and four males (Mage = 62.8 years, SD = 4.6 months) engaged in one session comprised of a regular walking and one involving NW. The variables derived at the end of each session showed that NW led to significant increase in VO2max and intensity as compared to regular walking. No significant differences were evident in the rate of perceived exertion (RPE), but more pain was perceived when walking without the poles. Overall, the addition of poles while walking had a positive effect on exercise capacity and intensity, without negative impact on perception of exertion and pain. Thus, NW may be recommended to older adults with osteoarthritis, of either gender, for its favorable physiological and psychological effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a gap in the literature in regard to analysis of intralimb coordination exhibited by children with (n= 10) and without developmental coordination disorder (DCD;n= 9) in 1-handed catching. The functional data showed that children without DCD (Mage = 10.6 years,SD= 1.08 years) were nearly perfect. Children with DCD (Mage = 11.0 years,SD= 1.16 years) caught significantly fewer balls, and this was despite the fact that not all of them had difficulties organizing their actions at intralimb level of coordination. The analysis of the coinciding actions revealed differences at the distal (elbow-wrist relations), but not at the proximal joints where both groups exhibited decoupling between the shoulder and elbow joints. Large variability within the groups also suggested that the notion of universal coordinative tendencies at intralimb level of coordination has to be treated with caution. In an overview of the disciplinary and professional field of Psychology, the two positions, one that stands up for the unification of Psychology, and the other that assumes that its specialization is an inevitable outcome are critically analyzed. The work studied the effect of a program of comprehension of texts with a moral content in the structures of moral reasoning of students of the first year of the Diversified Cycle at a private school in Caracas. The working hypothesis arose from a reading of Kohlberg's model of moral development (1992) and sought relationships between this and the models of development of the structures of thought through the analysis of text structure, presupposed in the findings following Narvaez (1999) on the conditional relation between the levels of cognitive development and the structures of moral reasoning that are activated by a reading of a text high on moral content. A quasi-experimental design of a non-equivalent control group was applied that included an experimental group and a control group selected non-randomly. The sample was made up of 86 participants of both sexes with an average age of 16.5 years. The program that the experimental group received was structured on the basis of cognitive and metacognitive strategies of identification of the macro-structure of the text, the recognition of main ideas, the following of thematic progression, the graphic representation of the text and the reading plan, taught through direct methods of instruction. This set of strategies was used not only to enhance comprehension but also to create a climate of analysis and discussion of the most important aspects of text content. A pre-test and post-test on reading comprehension were carried out using non-standardized instruments and the development of moral judgment was made applying the DIT (Defining Issues Test). The results of the post-test showed significant differences in text comprehension in favor of the experimental group but the levels of moral judgment showed minimal differences between the pre- and the post-text, both for the experimental and the control group. Such findings suggest that the aims of improving text comprehension are pertinent also for moral education but to enhance the development of a hierarchy of levels of moral judgment as described by Kohlberg, cognitive and metacognitive strategies of reading comprehension are not sufficient. Woman, 14 year old from San Martin (Peru), was admitted to hospital with a history of three months of dyspnea, pallor and hyporexia, and decreased urine volume in the last month. Two weeks before his admission presented overall headache, nausea and vomiting. She went to his local hospital where indicated treatment with ampicillin and gentamicin, on suspicion of acute pyelonephritis; but not observe improvement was transferred to our hospital. There were no important personal or family history, except her parents were consanguineous. On physical examination we found pallor, bilateral opacities in the lens, bilateral hearing loss and flapping. Laboratory tests showed anemia and azotemia (creatinine 15 mg/dL and urea 233 mg/dL). Urianalysis revealed tubular abnormalities, proteinuria and hematuria. Renal ultrasonography showed small kidneys. Ocular examination revealed nuclear polar cataract in her right eye and total cataract in the left eye. Audiometry revealed bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The level of moral development in a sampled of convicts from West Venezuela is presented. The study was carried out by means of Defining Issues Test (DIT) evaluation. The sample includes 50 persons between 19 and 55 years old (M = 34,33 y DT = 8,76), out of them 39 were males (average age 33,74), DT=8,24) an 11 were females (average age 35,91, DT=10,67). All of them were beneficiaries of alternatives formulas of their respective sentences such as social work, parole or conditional suspension of sentences and following the corresponding process or rehabilitation out of prisons. This sample registered a moral principles index of 19,67 and a non-relevant answers index of 12,07 as well as fourth moral developmental stage of 41,3 which are unusually high. The results suggest that there is not a statistically significant difference in the pattern of moral development depending on sex, age, or institution for sentenced fulfillment. However, the unusual high pattern of answers and the inverse correspondence between the duration of sentences and the resulting level of moral principles suggest that the sample behaves in a way, which is different from what is expected in no-out-law samples.
