Abstract Objective To analyze the risk factors associated with colorectal adenoma and to investigate the associations of metabolism-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD) with obesity, colorectal adenoma and high-risk adenoma. Methods A total of 1395 subjects were enrolled and divided into a colorectal adenoma group (593 subjects) and a control group (802 subjects) according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The characteristics of patients in the colorectal adenoma group and the control group were compared by the chi-square test. Univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were used to analyze independent risk factors and associations with different MAFLD subtypes. Colorectal adenoma characteristics and the proportion of patients with high-risk colorectal adenoma were also compared. Abstract Space‐time adaptive processing (STAP) array has found extensive use in the global navigation satellite system for interference suppression. Nevertheless, the conventional space‐time array necessitates multiple antennas and time delay taps, resulting in a heavy burden on both hardware and computation resources. Thus, lowering the cost and complexity of STAP becomes a considerable problem demanding prompt solutions. This work designs a space‐time array reconfiguration scheme based on the joint selection strategy of the antenna and delay tap to address this problem. The reconstructed array can induce a high signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) when using fewer antennas and delay taps. The space‐time correlation coefficient (STCC) is first presented to manifest the influence of reconfiguration on output SINR. Then, we formulate the space‐time array reconfiguration mathematical model, aiming to minimise STCC. Two reconfiguration methods are provided to solve the optimal array configuration of antennas and delay taps that can reach the minimum STCC and maximum SINR. The optimal antenna‐delay tap pairs are finally selected to comprise the reconstructed array. Substantial simulation experiments verify that the presented scheme and strategy are effective and reliable in space‐time array reconfiguration.

Abstract To present our experience with laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy with bladder flap (LUCBF) for treating benign ureteral stenosis and evaluate its feasibility and efficacy. The clinical data of 27 patients with benign ureteral stenosis who underwent LUCBF were retrospectively analyzed. After identification and excision of the ureteral stenosis segment, the healthy ureteral stump was dissected and incised longitudinally. A U-shaped or spiral bladder flap was harvested from the anterolateral bladder wall for ureteroplasty. All patients underwent LUCBF successfully, including 14 patients were combined with psoas hitch technique, between 90 and 220 min (median, 155 min). The median length of ureteral defect was 6 cm (range, 5–17 cm). The median blood loss was 40 ml (20–150 ml). The median indwelling time of double-J stent was 8 weeks (range, 4–8 weeks). Five patients (10.6%) suffered postoperative complications during the follow-up period (range, 12–48 months), including fever, hematuria, urinary tract infection and recurrent stenosis. The success rate was 96.3% (26/27). Patients with long ureter defects had longer operative time and more blood loss than short ureter defects. LUCBF was a safe and feasible technique for benign ureteral stenosis. Long ureter defect was related to longer operative time and more blood loss.

Bayberry pomace, a nutrient-rich material abundant in dietary fiber (DF), has historically been underutilized due to a lack of thorough research. This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical and functional properties of the DF. Ultrasonic enzymatic treatment was performed to extract the total DF, which was then optimized to produce modified soluble dietary fiber (MSDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (MIDF). The optimized conditions yielded 15.14% of MSDF with a water-holding capacity (WHC) of 54.13 g/g. The DFs were evaluated for their structural, physicochemical, and functional properties. The MSDF showed a higher (p < 0.05) WHC, oil-holding capacity (OHC), swelling capacity (SC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and glucose adsorption capacity (GAC) (about 14.15, 0.88, 1.23, 1.22, and 0.34 times) compared to the DF. Additionally, the MSDF showed strong, superior radical scavenging and blood sugar-lowering capabilities, with a more porous surface morphology. A Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis indicated that enzymatic modification degraded the cellulose and hemicellulose, reducing the DF crystallinity. Overall, the results demonstrated that cellulase hydrolysis could effectively improve the physicochemical and functional properties of DF, thereby paving the way for its development into functional food products.

ObjectivesWe aimed to probe the safety and effectiveness of flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy (FURL) with a suctioning ureteral access sheath (S-UAS) for removing upper urinary calculi under local anesthesia (LA).Materials and methodsThe clinical data of 56 patients with upper urinary calculi treated by FURL with an S-UAS under LA during the period between September 2019 and November 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. For LA, intramuscular pethidine (1.0–2.0 mg/kg) and phenergan (25 mg) were administered 30 min prior to surgery, and oxybuprocaine hydrochloride gel was administered through the urethra at the start of the surgery. The S-UAS and flexible ureteroscope were used for FURL. Demographic characteristics, stone-related parameters, and clinical outcomes were analyzed.ResultA total of 66 procedures were performed successfully on 46 patients (Group A), who underwent unilateral surgeries, and on 10 patients (Group B) who underwent same-session bilateral surgeries. All 56 patients were operated upon without altering the anesthesia strategy, and none required additional analgesia. The mean stone sizes of the Group A and Group B patients were 20.24 ± 5.45 mm and 29.40 ± 3.89 mm, respectively. The mean operative times of the two groups were 53.04 ± 13.35 min and 90.00 ± 15.81 min, respectively. In Group A, the stone-free rates (SFRs) were 76.1% (35/46) and 85.1% (40/46) at postoperative day 1 and day 30, respectively. In Group B, the SFRs were 80.0% (16/20) and 85.0% (17/20), respectively. Four (8.7%) patients in Group A suffered complications such as fever, stent pain, urosepsis, and steinstrasse. In Group B, one (10%) patient suffered from fever.ConclusionFURL, combined with an S-UAS under LA, is a feasible option and provides satisfactory clinical outcomes for appropriately selected patients.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal interstitial lung disease characterized by myofibroblast accumulation and extracellular matrix deposition, which lead to irreversible damage of the lung’s architecture and the formation of fibrotic lesions. IPF is also a sequela in serious patients with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The molecular mechanisms under pulmonary fibrosis remain unclear, and there is no satisfactory treatment currently available. Piceatannol (PIC) is a naturally occurring resveratrol analog found in a variety of dietary sources such as grapes, passion fruit, and white tea. It has been reported to inhibit liver fibroblast growth and exhibited various antitumor activities, although its role in pulmonary fibrosis has not been established yet. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-fibrotic role of PIC in bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice.Methods: Mice with BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis were treated with PIC, and fibrotic changes were measured by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and hydroxyproline assay. Luciferase assay, Western blot assay, histological analysis, and immunofluorescence staining were used to evaluate the effect of PIC on fibroblast activation and autophagy in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH-3T3) and human lung fibroblast cells (HFL1). The anti-fibrotic mechanisms of PIC were either confirmed in vivo.Results: Our results showed that PIC significantly alleviated the bleomycin-induced collagen deposition and myofibroblast accumulation. In vitro and in vivo studies indicated that PIC plays a role in activating autophagy in the process of anti-fibroblast activation. Further mechanism studies demonstrated that PIC can promote autophagy via inhibiting the TGF-β1-Smad3/ERK/P38 signaling pathway, which leads to a decreased number of activated myofibroblasts.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated for the first time that PIC possesses the protective effects against bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis due to the direct pulmonary protective effects which enhance the effect of autophagy in vitro and in vivo and finally leads to the decreased number of activated myofibroblasts. PIC may serve as a candidate compound for pulmonary fibrosis therapy and attenuates the sequelae of SARS-COV-2 pulmonary fibrosis.

A hierarchical iterative algorithm for the canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of tensors is proposed by improving the traditional conjugate gradient least squares (CGLS) method. Methods based on algebraic operations are investigated with the objective of estimating the direction of arrival (DoA) and polarization parameters of signals impinging on an array with electromagnetic (EM) vector‐sensors. The proposed algorithm adopts a hierarchical iterative strategy, which enables the algorithm to obtain a fast recovery for the highly collinear factor matrix. Moreover, considering the same accuracy threshold, the proposed algorithm can achieve faster convergence compared with the alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm wherein the highly collinear factor matrix is absent. The results reveal that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance under the condition of fewer snapshots, compared with the ALS‐based algorithm and the algorithm based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD). Furthermore, with regard to an array with a small number of sensors, the observed advantage in estimating the DoA and polarization parameters of the signal is notable.

Directional modulation (DM) technique based on artificial noise (AN) enables the physical layer security (PLS) for wireless communications in free space. However, on one hand, the introduction of AN results in less power efficient for a DM system; on the other hand, the AN-aided DM technique is strongly dependent on the channel state information (CSI) of transceivers, which greatly limits its practical application. What is more, when the eavesdropper (EVE) is slowly approaching the legitimate user (LU) or the EVE and the LU are in the same direction, the transmission security cannot be guaranteed. To circumvent these problems, DM technique with multiple parameters weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (MP-WFRFT) and chaotic scrambling (CS) aided is proposed in this paper to realize the power-efficient and security-enhanced wireless transmissions. Then, the symbol error rate (SER), secrecy rate, robustness, and anti-interception performance of the proposed method are analyzed and simulated. The simulation results are presented to verify that the proposed method is more power-efficient than the traditional AN-aided DM schemes, and the PLS is guaranteed due to the proposed approach, albeit knowing the intended direction for an EVE.

Nur77 is an orphan nuclear receptor that participates in the occurrence and development of a variety of tumors. Many agonists of Nur77 have been reported to have significant anticancer effects. Our previous studies have found that the introduction of bicyclic aromatic rings, such as naphthalyl and quinoline groups, into the N′-methylene position of indoles’ Nur77 modulators can effectively improve the anti-tumor activity of the target compounds. Following our previous studies, a series of novel 1-(2-(6-methoxynaphthalen-2-yl)-6-methylnicotinoyl)-4-substituted semicarbazide/thiosemicarbazide derivatives 9a–9w were designed and synthesized in four steps from 6-methoxy-2-acetonaphthone and N-dimethylformamide dimethylacetal. All compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HRMS, and their anti-tumor activity on various cancer cell lines such as A549, HepG2, HGC-27, MCF-7 and HeLa are also evaluated. From the series of compounds, 9h exhibited the most potent anti-proliferative activity against several cancer cells. Colony formation and cell cycle experiments showed that compound 9h inhibited cell growth and arrested the cell cycle. Additionally, 9h leads to the cleavage of PARP. We initially explored the mechanism of 9h-induced apoptosis and found that compound 9h can upregulate Nur77 expression and triggered Nur77 nuclear export, indicating the occurrence of Nur77-mediated apoptosis. These results suggested that 9h may be a promising anti-tumor leading compound for the further research.

Considering the diversity of uniform distribution for the solutions of multi-objective optimization problems, we propose the multi-objective genetic algorithm based on fitting (MOGA/F) and interpolation (MOGA/I). The selected operator is based on the optimal reference points uniformly distributed in the objective space, which is calculated by applying a fitting function or interpolation method from a finite set of objective values. After sorting the ranks of the population, the objective space for the last front can be easily calculated by using fitting and interpolation functions, and the uniformly distributed points can be obtained without parameter setting. The individuals with the shortest Euclidean distance to the reference points are chosen according to the error matrix. This method can maintain the diversity and spread of the solutions without destroying the convergence. In this paper, MOGA/F and MOGA/I are compared with the traditional methods, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II and multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition, by optimizing the mathematical problems. The numerical examples show that MOGA/F and MOGA/I have a much higher performance in terms of diversity and convergence of the final solutions.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) of hepatocellular carcinoma is a serious problem. Although CD13 is a biomarker in human liver cancer stem cells, the relationship between CD13 and MDR remains uncertain. This study uses liver cancer cell model to understand the role of CD13 in enhancing the cytotoxic effect of chemotherapy agents. Cytotoxic agents can induce CD13 expression. CD13 inhibitor, bestatin, enhances the antitumor effect of cytotoxic agents. Meanwhile, CD13-targeting siRNA and neutralizing antibody can enhance the cytotoxic effect of 5-fluorouracil (5FU). CD13 overexpression increases cell survival upon cytotoxic agents treatment, while the knockdown of CD13 causes hypersensitivity of cells to cytotoxic agents treatment. Mechanistically, the inhibition of CD13 leads to the increase of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). BC-02 is a novel mutual prodrug (hybrid drug) of bestatin and 5FU. Notably, BC-02 can inhibit cellular activity in both parental and drug-resistant cells, accompanied with significantly increased ROS level. Moreover, the survival time of Kunming mice bearing H22 cells under BC-02 treatment is comparable to the capecitabine treatment at maximum dosage. These data implicate a therapeutic method to reverse MDR by targeting CD13, and indicate that BC-02 is a potent antitumor compound.

Wireless ad hoc networks can experience extreme fluctuations in transmission traffic in the Internet of Things, which is widely used today. Currently, the most crucial issues requiring attention for wireless ad hoc networks are making the best use of low traffic periods, reducing congestion during high traffic periods, and improving transmission performance. To solve these problems, the present paper proposes a novel cross-layer transmission model based on decentralized coded caching in the physical layer and a content division multiplexing scheme in the media access control layer. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model effectively addresses these issues by substantially increasing the throughput and successful transmission rate compared to existing protocols without a negative influence on delay, particularly for large scale networks under conditions of highly contrasting high and low traffic periods.

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver is vulnerable to active jamming, which results in imprecise positioning. Therefore, antijamming performance of the receiver is always the key to studies of satellite navigation system. In antijamming application of satellite navigation system, if active jamming is received from array antenna main-lobe, main-lobe distortion happens when the adaptive filtering algorithm forms main-lobe nulling. A robust method to suppress jamming for satellite navigation by reconstructing sample covariance matrix without main-lobe nulling is proposed in this paper. No nulling is formed while suppressing the main-lobe jamming, which avoids main-lobe direction distortion. Meanwhile, along with adaptive pattern control (APC), the adaptive pattern of array antenna approaches the pattern without jamming so as to receive the matching navigation signal. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation prove that this method suppresses jamming without main-beam distortion. Furthermore, the output SINR will not decrease with the main-lobe distortion by this method, which improves the antijamming performance.

Background/Aim: High-fat diets induce shifts in the gut microbial community structure in patients or animals with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of metformin (MET) and berberine (BER) on the intestinal microbiota of rats with NASH. Materials and Methods: Forty specific pathogen-free male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into 4 groups. Model rats were fed high-fat diets to create NASH models. MET or BER rats were administrated MET or BER, respectively, at the onset of induction of NASH. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol, and triglycerides were examined. Plasma endotoxin levels were measured using the turbidimetric endotoxin assay. The incidence of bacterial translocation describes the passage of bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract through the intestinal mucosa barrier to mesenteric lymph nodes and other organs. Hematoxylin and eosin and oil red O staining were used for histopathological analysis. High throughput 16S rRNA sequencing was carried out for analyzing the composition of intestinal microbiota. Results: High-fat diets caused NASH after 16-week induction. Administration of MET and BER ameliorated NASH by attenuating hepatic steatosis and inflammation and decreasing the plasma levels of endotoxin. MET and BER restored the composition of the intestinal microbiota disrupted by NASH. Both MET and BER altered the abundance of Atopobiaceae, Brevibacterium, Christensenellaceae, Coriobacteriales, Papillibacter, Pygmaiobacter, and Rikenellaceae RC9 in rats with NASH. The screened intestinal microbiota may be responsible for the improvement in fat accumulation and glucose metabolism. Conclusion: MET and BER demonstrated beneficial effects on the intestinal microbiota, which was disturbed in NASH. This finding may explain the functional mechanism of MET and BER in NASH. To ascertain the possibility of using branchwood, trunkwood, and rootwood of Betula platyphylla Roth. in papermaking, this study investigated tissue proportion, fiber features, and major chemical components in whole-tree wood of the tree species. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the rootwood had a significantly lower density and vessel proportion, higher ray proportion, wider lumen, and thicker wall of fiber than the trunkwood and branchwood (p <0.05). The branchwood had a significantly shorter fiber and smaller length/width than the trunkwood and rootwood (p <0.05). The trunkwood had significantly longer and narrower fibers with thinner wall and higher cellulose, but lower hemicelluloses than the branchwood and rootwood (p <0.05). The study concluded that the trunkwood of B. platyphylla was suitable for producing good paper, while the branchwood and rootwood met the basic requirements of papermaking and could be used to produce low-grade paper. To enhance effective wood utilization, knowledge of the anatomical features that impact its service behavior is indispensable. The anatomical features of branchwood and stemwood of Betula costata Trautv. from natural secondary forests in central (Muzhaling mountain) and northeast (Maoershan mountain) China were studied to provide adequate information to enhance their efficient utilization, especially branchwood, whose use could widen the raw material base of the timber industry. Microtomed sections were employed to determine the tissue dimensions and proportions. Analyses of variance were used to test the anatomical feature differences between the two different sites, between the stemwood and branchwood, and between the heartwood and sapwood. The results showed that B. costata wood is diffuse-porous with more but narrower vessels located in the branch than in the stem. The branchwood also had a significantly higher fiber proportion than the stemwood. The sapwood exhibited significantly longer fibers than the heartwood. B. costata from Maoershan had significantly longer fibers, lower fiber proportions, larger fiber lumen diameter, and higher vessel density than that from Muzhaling. The results suggested that B. costata branchwood from Maoershan is suitable for papermaking and glued plates, while stemwood can be used for light construction purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes two types of defected ground structures (DGSs) for achieving the mutual coupling (MC) reduction and the antenna cross-polarization (XP) suppression respectively in a MIMO (multiple input multiple output) wireless communication system. The novel periodic fractal DGS (PFDGS) are presented to reduce the MC between antenna elements. About 20 dB MC reduction is achieved, which contributes to improve the antenna efficiency and increases the MIMO system channel capacity. However, the method of using DGS or other decoupling structures for MC reduction will degrade the antenna XP level unnecessarily. For solving this problem, another arc-shaped DGS is etched under each patch to suppress the antenna XP level. In this way, the XP level is suppressed from -10 dB to -34.6 dB in the boresight direction. Moreover, the arc-shaped DGS will not degrade the MC reduction performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to determine the possibility of whole-tree wood utilization of a native tree species in Northeast China (P. ussuriensis), this study investigated the air-dried wood density and fiber dimensions for each ring in the branch, stem, and root wood of the tree species. The results showed significant differences in wood densities and fiber dimensions among tree positions (p <0.05). The root had the highest average density (0.596 g/cm3), and branch had the lowest average density (0.506 g/cm3). The root and branch wood exhibited larger fibers than that of the stem wood. The root wood had the highest average fiber wall (6.038 μm). The fiber wall of branch wood appeared thinner than the stem wood, although the difference was not statistically significant. The radial pattern of wood density and fiber dimensions indicated that branches and roots did not have juvenile wood such as was found in the stems. The study concludes that the use of branch or root wood of P. ussuriensis would be favorable for papermaking or wood-based panels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using uniform linear array (ULA), a passive localization algorithm is presented for mixed far-field (FF) and near-field (NF) signals scenarios. Based on the high-order cumulant (HOC) technique, a special Hermite matrix is constructed by three fourth-order cumulant matrices, which are calculated by dividing the ULA into two sub-arrays. Then, the special matrix of signals is decomposed to obtain the source subspace. According to ESPRIT algorithm, two transformation matrices of all sub-arrays can be obtained. Meanwhile, the two transformation matrixes could be used to calculate the range and angles of arrival (AOA) of NF sources, as well as AOAs of FF sources. Moreover, compared with two-stage MUSIC (TSMUSIC) and four-order cumulant MUSIC method, the proposed algorithm has higher accuracy for localisation of both FF and NF sources without any spectral search. In this paper, we propose an improved nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II with scope constrained (INSGA-II/SC) with three modifications, which are dynamic nondomination strategy, scope-constrained strategy, and front uniformly distributed strategy. Here, the metric for multiobjective optimization mainly focuses on the computation complexity, convergence, and diversity of the final solutions. For a large search space in the initial process and a fast convergence in the last process, dynamic nondomination factor is considered in the rank operator. We can find a manageable number of Pareto solutions that are in the constrained scope instead of the entire Pareto front (PF) to reduce the computation complexity by scope-constrained strategy. In order to obtain a high performance for good representatives of the entire PF, the solutions closer to the uniformly distributed points on the current front will be chosen. In this paper, the proposed methods and two efficient multiobjective optimization methods are used for the optimization of mathematical problems and array pattern synthesis with lower side lobe level (SLL) and null. Numerical examples show that INSGA-II/SC has a high performance of diversity and convergence for the final solutions when compared with the other techniques published in the literature. C-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CCR7) has been implicated in lymph node metastasis of various cancers. Previous studies have revealed that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is involved in the chemotactic process mediated by CCR7 and its ligands in various types of carcinoma. However, the underlying mechanism of this process remains to be fully elucidated. The present study investigated whether chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 21 (CCL21)/CCR7 may activate EMT of lung cancer cells and their associated signaling pathways. A549 and H520 lung cancer cell lines were examined in vitro in the present study. The results indicated that A549 and H520 expressed CCR7, but reduced levels of CCL21. Following stimulation of lung cancer cell lines with CCL21, the expression of the epithelial marker E-cadherin was downregulated, and the mesenchymal markers Vimentin/Slug and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) were upregulated. In addition, the ERK inhibitor PD98059 may inhibit EMT caused by CCL21, and decreased cell migration and invasion initiated by CCL21. Furthermore, lung adenocarcinoma tissues from 50 patients who underwent lung cancer operations were investigated by immunohistochemistry. The findings revealed that CCR7, Slug and Vimentin were highly expressed in lung carcinoma tissues, and were significantly associated with lymph node metastasis and clinical pathological stages, respectively. CCR7 expression was correlated positively with expression levels of Slug and Vimentin. CCL21 was expressed positively in the endothelium of lymphatic vessels adjacent to cancer cells, and weakly in lung cancer cells. Collectively, these results demonstrated that CCL21/CCR7 may activate EMT in lung cancer cells via the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. The current study provides evidence that a close interaction exists between CCL21/CCR7chemotaxis and EMT procedures in lung cancer metastasis, providing a basis for the development of therapeutic targets. Metamorphosis in insects is regulated by juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroids. The mechanism of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), but not of JH action, is well understood. A basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)-Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) family member, methoprene tolerant (Met), plays an important role in JH action. Microarray analysis and RNA interference (RNAi) were used to identify 69 genes that require Met for their hydroprene-regulated expression in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. Quantitative real time PCR analysis confirmed microarray data for 13 of the 16 hydroprene-response genes tested. The members of the bHLH-PAS family often function as heterodimers to regulate gene expression and Met is a member of this family. To determine whether other members of the bHLH-PAS family are required for the expression of JH-response genes, we employed RNAi to knockdown the expression of all 11 members of the bHLH-PAS family and studied the expression of JH-response genes in RNAi insects. These studies showed that besides Met, another member of this family, steroid receptor co-activator (SRC) is required for the expression of 15 JH-response genes tested. Moreover, studies in JH responsive Aag-2 cells revealed that Aedes aegypti homologues of both Met and SRC are required for the expression of the JH-response gene, kr-h1, and SRC is required for expression of ecdysone-response genes. These data suggest the steroid receptor co-activator plays key roles in both JH and 20E action suggesting that this may be an important molecule that mediates cross-talk between JH and 20E to prevent metamorphosis. Juvenile hormones (JH) regulate a wide variety of developmental and physiological processes in insects. Comparison of microarray data on JH-induced genes in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, L57 cells and in the honey bee, Apis mellifera, identified 16 genes that are induced in both species. Analysis of promoter regions of these 16 D. melanogaster genes identified DmJHRE1 (D. melanogaster JH response element 1). In L57 cells, the reporter gene regulated by DmJHRE1 was induced by JH III. Two proteins (FKBP39 and Chd64) that bind to DmJHRE1 were identified. FKBP39 and Chd64 double-stranded RNA inhibited JH Ill induction of a reporter gene regulated by DmJHRE1. FKBP39 and Chd64 proteins expressed in yeast bound to DmJHRE1. Two-hybrid and pull-down assays showed that these two proteins interact with each other as well as with ecdysone receptor, ultraspiracle, and methoprene-tolerant protein. Developmental expression profiles and JH induction of mRNA for FKBP39 and Chd64 proteins and their interaction with proteins known to be involved in both JH (methoprene-tolerant protein) and ecdysteroid action (ecdysone receptor and ultraspiracle) suggest that these proteins probably play important roles in cross-talk between JH and ecdysteroids.
