The present study focuses on the assessment of the performance of a finite volume method based, particle-resolved simulation approach to predict the flow through a model packed-bed consisting of 21 layers of spheres arranged in the body centered cubic packing. The unsteady flow developing in the freeboard is also considered. Two highly resolved large eddy simulation were preformed, for two Reynolds numbers, 300 and 500, based on the particle diameter, employing a polyhedral, boundary-conforming mesh. The geometry and the flow conditions are set to reproduce the flow conditions investigated in the experiment carried out by Velten and Zähringer ["Flow field characterisation of gaseous flow in a packed bed by particle image velocimetry," Transp. Porous Media 150, 307 (2023)] using particle image velocimetry. The numerical results compare favorably with the measurements both inside and above the bed. The effect of differences arising between the physical and numerical configurations is thoroughly discussed alongside the impact of meshing strategy on the accuracy of the predictions. Evaluation of the relative rates of the cobalt‐catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling between the neopentylglycol ester of 4‐fluorophenylboronic acid and N‐Boc‐4‐bromopiperidine established that smaller N‐alkyl substituents on the phenoxyimine (FI) supporting ligand accelerated the overall rate of the reaction. This trend inspired the design of optimal cobalt catalysts with phenoxyoxazoline (FOx) and phenoxythiazoline (FTz) ligands. An air‐stable cobalt(II) precatalyst, (FTz)CoBr(py)3 was synthesized and applied to the cross‐coupling of an indole‐5‐boronic ester nucleophile with a piperidine‐4‐bromide electrophile that is relevant to the synthesis of reported toll‐like receptor (TLR) 7/8 antagonist molecules including afimetoran. Addition of excess KOMe⋅B(OiPr)3 improved catalyst lifetime due to attenuation of alkoxide basicity that otherwise resulted in demetallation of the FI chelate. A first‐order dependence on the cobalt precatalyst and a saturation regime in nucleophile were observed, supporting turnover‐limiting transmetalation and the origin of the observed trends in N‐imine substitution. This work applies Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to the combustion process within a CAI engine. The chemical reaction is treated with a pre-tabulation approach based on homogeneous reactor simulations. At this juncture, a five-dimensional chemistry database is employed where the thermo-chemical properties are a function of the unburnt gas temperature, the air–fuel ratio, the exhaust gas ratio, the pressure, and the reaction progress variable. Statistical quantities are gathered for 20 simulated cycles and the averaged pressure curves get compared to measurements. The simulation data are then used to provide further insight into the auto-ignition process. It will be shown how thermo-chemical states are distributed within the cylinder and how the ignition quality depends on them. A statistical analysis is conducted to identify manifolds in the multi-dimensional scalar space along which the conditions leading to ignition evolve. Furthermore the strong influence in between consecutive cycles caused by the exhaust gas is investigated to identify the mechanism of cycle-to-cycle variations.

We investigate the nature of small‐scale irregularities observed in the cusp by the Twin Rockets to Investigate Cusp Electrodynamics‐2 (TRICE‐2) in regions of enhanced phase scintillations and high‐frequency coherent radar backscatter. We take advantage of the fact that the irregularities were detected by spatially separated probes, and present an interferometric analysis of both the observed electron density and electric field fluctuations. We provide evidence that fluctuations spanning a few decameters to about a meter have low phase velocity in the plasma reference frame and are nondispersive, confirming that decameter‐scale irregularities follow the E × B velocity. Furthermore, we show that these "spatial" structures are intermittent and prominent outside of regions with strongest precipitation. The observations are then discussed in the context of possible mechanisms for irregularity creation. Plain Language Summary: Ionospheric plasma are known to be highly irregular, with fluctuations evolving both in space and time. Irregular structures can reach hundreds of kilometers to a few meters and, despite being common and having space weather impacts, the details of their source(s) and behavior are still unclear, especially at smaller scales. In this work, we investigate small‐scale plasma density and electric field fluctuations observed by a sounding rocket where ground‐based instruments also detected irregularities. To circumvent ambiguities of interpreting measurements made by single probes, we take advantage of the fact that the fluctuations were detected by spatially separated probes and use multi‐point analysis techniques to separate the spatial and temporal scales of the observed structures. The analysis allows to estimate the phase velocities and wavelengths of the fluctuations and reveals spatial irregularities from tens of meters to a meter, that is, irregularities that are slow in the plasma frame. Additionally, we show that these small‐scale structures are concentrated outside of regions where most electrons are precipitating downward along the Earth's magnetic field and discuss the observations in the context of irregularity creation. Altogether, this study provides new insights into the sources and behavior of high‐latitude ionospheric irregularities. The VISIONS-2 35.039 sounding rocket was launched from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, on 7 December 2018 at 11:06 UT, and traveled overhead of the cusp aurora. The payload reached an apogee of 806.6 km and provided measurements of the electric field (E) and electron density (Ne) with a high sampling rate of 6,250 Hz. The high-sampling-data make it possible to estimate the horizontal structure of E and Ne on scales ranging from meters to kilometers scale. The horizontal variation in the electron density and electric field (Ne/Ne and E) and integrated power of Ne and E (SPNe and SPE) for 1-10, 10-100, and 100-1,000 Hz range were derived. The derived values were compared with the 557.7 and 630.0 nm emission intensities obtained from an all-sky camera installed in Ny-Ålesund projected at the footprint of the rocket, which was calculated by tracing the Earth's magnetic field line from the rocket altitude to the emission layer. Ne/Ne, E, SPNe, and SPE increased with the 630.0 nm emission intensity. Of particular interest is the lower level irregularity was observed when the 557.7 nm emission intensity exceeded 4.5 kR compared with other time interval. This may suggest that particle impact ionization created sufficient Pedersen conductance in the E-region to short the F-region current. This short-circuit seemed to cause the suppression of the irregularities in the F-region and lower level irregularities were also observed in the rocket altitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides a summarizing account of the results obtained in the current collaborative work of four research institutes concerning near-wall flow in turbomachinery. Specific questions regarding the influences of boundary layer development on blades and endwalls as well as loss mechanisms due to secondary flow are investigated. These address skewness, periodical distortion, wake interaction and heat transfer, among others. Several test rigs with modifiable configurations are used for the experimental investigations including an axial low speed compressor, an axial high-speed wind tunnel, and an axial low-speed turbine. Approved stationary and time resolving measurements techniques are applied in combination with custom hot-film sensor-arrays. The experiments are complemented by URANS simulations, and one group focusses on turbulence-resolving simulations to elucidate the specific impact of rotation. Juxtaposing and interlacing their results the four groups provide a broad picture of the underlying phenomena, ranging from compressors to turbines, from isothermal to non-adiabatic, and from incompressible to compressible flows. The ignition and combustion of coal particle groups are investigated numerically in a laminar flow reactor. The Flamelet Generated Manifold method is extended to account for the complex mixture of gases being released during devolatilization, which is calculated with a competing two-step model. A second mixture fraction is introduced to include the mixing with the second methane fuel stream. The interactions of the gas phase with particles are modeled within a fully coupled Euler-Lagrange framework. To investigate the influence of particle groups on ignition and combustion, successively increasing densities of particle streams have been analyzed. The ignition delay time is increased significantly by higher particle densities. This delay is validated successfully with the available measurements. Moreover, the shape of the volatile flame was found to be strongly influenced by the particle number density inside the flame. A transition from spherical flames around single particles to a conical flame around the particle cloud could be found in numerical results as well as in experiments. As the primary mechanism for the substantial ignition delay and the formation of the flame, the increased heat transfer from the gas-phase to the particle group, resulting in lower gas-phase temperatures, was identified. A novel, efficient method to account for multivariate probability density functions (PDFs) in the context of the flamelet generated manifolds (FGM) approach in a large eddy simulation (LES) framework is presented and discussed. It consists of applying the 'Correlation Set by Simulated Annealing (CSSA)' algorithm on univariate samples of each control variable to recombine them into multivariate samples in joint space, while accounting for the needed covariances. This is done on the fly and on a cell-by-cell basis. Thereby, the assumption of statistical independence of the control variables has been relaxed. The PDF is represented in a discrete manner and the integration is replaced through ensemble averaging. Consequently, the shape of the PDF no longer appears in the look-up table. The algorithm has been validated in the context of LES calculations of two configurations. Compared to a conventional pre-integrated FGM approach, the required CPU time has increased only modestly. Hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial aircraft is currently a key industry interest. Consequently, publications on its design and performance estimation are manifold. However, models addressing characteristics of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) are virtually unavailable--even though direct maintenance costs (DMC) represent a significant part of direct operating costs (DOC) in commercial aviation. Detailed analysis of hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion degradation and maintenance scenarios must integrate both methods of sizing and design as well as operational factors for conventional and electric subsystems, as operator-specific utilization strongly influences MRO. Accordingly, a holistic engine analysis model is currently being developed using the example of an Airbus A320 aircraft, taking into account flight mission, engine performance, degradation, and MRO. This paper presents an implementation of hybridization into the gas turbine thermodynamic cycle calculation for parallel hybrid-electric (PHE) engine architectures with 2 and 5 MW electric motors, and the approach necessary for resizing hybridized gas turbine components. Turbomachinery loading throughout representative short-haul missions is analyzed for conventional and hybrid-electric configurations based on the V2500 high-bypass turbofan engine, whereby unknown or uncertain boundary conditions are considered in a probabilistic sensitivity study. As a result, MRO-driving quantities such as engine performance parameters, atmospheric conditions, and ingested aerosols can be compared. The findings suggest that DMC related to the gas turbine may be considerably lowered through hybridization, as it allows for reduced peak temperatures and more uniform gas turbine operation. However, these gains are at least partially offset by additional components' DMC. For electrical machines, bearings and the stator winding insulation are life-limiting, where the latter becomes increasingly dominant for higher power densities associated with high current densities and copper losses. Thermo-mechanical stresses are considered as driving mechanisms in power electronic systems degradation. This work shows experiments and simulations of the fired operation of a spark ignition engine with port-fuelled injection. The test rig considered is an optically accessible single cylinder engine specifically designed at TU Darmstadt for the detailed investigation of in-cylinder processes and model validation. The engine was operated under lean conditions using iso-octane as a substitute for gasoline. Experiments have been conducted to provide a sound database of the combustion process. A planar flame imaging technique has been applied within the swirl- and tumble-planes to provide statistical information on the combustion process to complement a pressure-based comparison between simulation and experiments. This data is then analysed and used to assess the large eddy simulation performed within this work. For the simulation, the engine code KIVA has been extended by the dynamically thickened flame model combined with chemistry reduction by means of pressure dependent tabulation. Sixty cycles have been simulated to perform a statistical evaluation. The effects of combustion and SubGrid Scale (SGS) modelling on the overall flame characteristics of a turbulent premixed flame are investigated. This is achieved in terms of mean flow statistics, variances and flame surfaces. In particular, the chemical flame structure is analysed and compared. The Artificially Thickened Flame (ATF) approach coupled with the Flamelet Generated Manifolds (FGMs) and Filtered TAbulated Chemistry for LES (F-TACLES) approaches are used for this investigation. A Germano like procedure for dynamical calculation of SGS wrinkling is used which ensures the conservation of the total flame surface for both models. It turns out that using the dynamic SGS wrinkling model improves the results. Although the results of both combustion models in terms of statistics, mean and variances show very good agreement, the resolved flame surfaces hide different dynamic behaviour. Photospheric motions are believed to be the source of coronal heating and of velocity fluctuations detected in the solar corona. A numerical model, based on the shell technique applied on reduced magnetohydrodynamics equations, is used to represent energy injection due to footpoint motions, storage and dissipation of energy in a coronal loop. Motions at the loop bases are simulated by random signals whose frequency-wavenumber spectrum reproduces features of photospheric motions: the p-mode peak and the low-frequency continuum. Results indicate that a turbulent state develops, dominated by magnetic energy, where dissipation takes place in an intermittent fashion. The nonlinear cascade is mainly controlled by velocity fluctuations, where resonant modes are dominant at high frequencies. Low frequency fluctuations present a power-law spectra and a bump at p-mode frequency; similar features are observed in velocity spectra detected in the corona. For typical loop parameters the energy input flux is comparable with that necessary to heat the quiet-Sun corona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics occurring at the terrestrial magnetopause are investigated by using Geotail and THEMIS spacecraft data of magnetopause crossings during ongoing Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. Properties of plasma turbulence and intermittency are presented, with the aim of understanding the evolution of the turbulence as a result of the development of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The data have been tested against standard diagnostics for intermittent turbulence, such as the autocorrelation function, the spectral analysis and the scale-dependent statistics of the magnetic field increments. A quasi-periodic modulation of different scaling exponents may exist along the direction of propagation of the Kelvin–Helmholtz waves along the Geocentric Solar Magnetosphere coordinate system (GSM), and it is visible as a quasi-periodic modulation of the scaling exponents we have studied. The wave period associated with such oscillation was estimated to be approximately 6.4 Earth Radii ( R E ). Furthermore, the amplitude of such modulation seems to decrease as the measurements are taken further away from the Earth along the magnetopause, in particular after X (G S M) ≲ − 15 R E . The observed modulation seems to persist for most of the parameters considered in this analysis. This suggests that a kind of signature related to the development of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities could be present in the statistical properties of the magnetic turbulence. The influence of turbulence modeling approach by means of (U)RANS and large eddy simulation (LES) on the overall modeling of turbulent condensing wet steam flows is investigated using the example of a low-pressure steam turbine cascade. For an accurate numerical treatment of turbulence in the presence of shock waves, necessary for predictive scale-resolving computations, a hybrid flux treatment switches between a baseline nondissipative central flux in energy consistent split form and a shock-capturing upwind flux in shocked regions based on a shock sensor. Condensation is realized by a monodispersed Euler-Euler source term model, the equation of state by the highly efficient and accurate spline based table lookup method (SBTL). The numerical treatment is validated with a decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence test case containing eddy shocklets. The measurement results of the condensing wet steam cascade are overall much better matched by LES compared to RANS and URANS. Analysis shows that the LES is much better able to account for the inherently unsteady nature of the spontaneous condensation process and its interaction with the trailing edge shock wave structure. Synthetic turbulence models are useful tools that provide realistic representations of turbulence, necessary to test theoretical results, to serve as background fields in some numerical simulations, and to test analysis tools. Models of one-dimensional (1D) and 3D synthetic turbulence previously developed still required large computational resources. A "wavelet-based" model of synthetic turbulence, able to produce a field with tunable spectral law, intermittency, and anisotropy, is presented here. The rapid algorithm introduced, based on the classic p-model of intermittent turbulence, allows us to reach a broad spectral range using a modest computational effort. The model has been tested against the standard diagnostics for intermittent turbulence, i.e., the spectral analysis, the scale-dependent statistics of the field increments, and the multifractal analysis, all showing an excellent response. This work presents an approach to the contextual integration of fluid selection and compressor design for the cycle design of efficient industrial heat pumps. The vapor-compression cycle of an air-water heat pump operated at 42 °C source and 82 °C target temperature is investigated as a theoretical case study. An optimization study is performed, which includes the assessment of suitable refrigerants. Besides well-known single-component refrigerants, various binary mixtures are considered. The cycle optimization aims at simultaneously providing high cycle coefficient of performance and volumetric heating capacity. Cycle operation with the mixtures R-41/trans-2-butene (10, 90 mol. %) and CO2/R-161 (40, 60 mol. %) yields the highest values of these parameters, respectively. For further evaluation, centrifugal compressors operated with each of the two promising mixtures are designed with an in-house meanline program. In addition, the compressor design for the hydrofluoro-olefin refrigerant R-1234ze(Z) is considered as a reference. All designs are reviewed with respect to cycle as well as compressor design criteria and the applied methodology will assist designers in identifying key decision variables. The comprehensive design assessment suggests that CO2/R-161 (40, 60 mol. %) provides the best overall solution for an efficient cycle with a compact compressor design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The description of the local turbulent energy transfer and the high-resolution ion distributions measured by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission together provide a formidable tool to explore the cross-scale connection between the fluid-scale energy cascade and plasma processes at subion scales. When the small-scale energy transfer is dominated by Alfvénic, correlated velocity, and magnetic field fluctuations, beams of accelerated particles are more likely observed. Here, for the first time, we report observations suggesting the nonlinear wave-particle interaction as one possible mechanism for the energy dissipation in space plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
