Considering that some researchers point to a possible influence of air pollution on COVID-19 transmission, severity, and death rate, the aim of our in silico study was to determine the relationship between the key air pollutants [sulphur dioxide (SO), carbon monoxide (CO), 2particulate matter (PMx), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3)] and COVID-19 complications using the publicly available toxicogenomic analytical and prediction tools: (i) Comparative Toxicogenomic Database (CTD) to identify genes common to air pollutants and COVID-19 complications; (ii) GeneMANIA to construct a network of these common and related genes; (iii) ToppGene Suite to extract the most important biological processes and molecular pathways; and (iv) DisGeNET to search for the top gene-disease pairs. SO2, CO, PMx, NO2, and O3 interacted with 6, 6, 18, 9, and 12 COVID-19-related genes, respectively. Four of these are common for all pollutants (IL10, IL6, IL1B, and TNF) and participate in most (77.64 %) physical interactions. Further analysis pointed to cytokine binding and cytokine-mediated signalling pathway as the most important molecular function and biological process, respectively. Other molecular functions and biological processes are mostly related to cytokine activity and inflammation, which might be connected to the cytokine storm and resulting COVID-19 complications. The final step singled out the link between the CEBPA gene and acute myelocytic leukaemia and between TNFRSF1A and TNF receptor-associated periodic fever syndrome. This indicates possible complications in COVID-19 patients suffering from these diseases, especially those living in urban areas with poor air quality.

V Ljubljani je glavni vir onesnaževanja zraka z NO2 promet, zato se prispevek osredotoča na prometno obremenjevanje zraka v treh različnih tipih mestnega prostora: urbanem ozadju, na odprtem prostoru ob cestah in v cestnih koridorjih. Predstavljene so tudi meritve koncentracij prečno na glavno cesto. Prispevek primerja rezultate meritev NO2 v Ljubljani v merilnih obdobjih poleti 2005 in 2013 ter skuša pojasniti vzroke za razlike v obsegu onesnaženosti različnih tipov mestnega prostora in pomemben upad koncentracij v vseh obravnavanih tipih.

Cestni promet povzroča emisije izpušnih plinov in delcev, ki nastanejo kot posledica izgorevanja goriv v motorjih z notranjim izgorevanjem pogonskih goriv in nekaterih drugih procesov. Zrak ob cestah je zato obremenjen z onesnaževali kot so dušikovi oksidi, ogljikov monoksid, lahko hlapni ogljikovodiki, delci in še nekateri drugi. Spremljanje stanja kakovosti ozračja ob cestah je z vidika proučevanja vplivov prometa na kakovost zraka ključno pri ocenjevanju okoljskih vplivov prometne dejavnosti. Prispevek govori o uporabi difuzivnih vzorčevalnikov pri merjenju onesnaženosti ozračja z dušikovim dioksidom ob večjih in manjših cestah na območju Mestne občine Ljubljana (MOL).

The aim of this study was to investigate whether nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and certain meteorological conditions had an impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related emergency department (ED) visits in the metropolitan area of Zagreb. This retrospective, ecological study included 20,228 patients with a cardiovascular disease as their primary diagnosis who were examined in the EDs of two Croatian University Hospitals, Sisters of Charity and Holy Spirit, in the study period July 2008-June 2010. The median of daily CVD-related ED visits during the study period was 28 and was the highest during winter. A significant negative correlation was found between CVD-related emergency visits and air temperature measured no more than three days prior to the visit, and the highest negative correlation coefficient was measured two days earlier (R=-0.266, p≤0.001). The number of CVD-related emergency visits significantly correlated with the average NO2 concentration on the same day (R=0.191, p<0.001). The results of multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the number of CVD-related emergency visits depended on air temperature, and NO2 and O3 concentrations. The higher the air temperatures, the lower the number of daily CVD-related emergency visits (p<0.001). An increase in NO2 concentrations (p=0.005) and a decrease in O3 concentrations of two days earlier (p=0.006) led to an increase in CVD-related ED visits. In conclusion, the decrease in O3 concentrations and the increase in NO2, even if below the legally binding thresholds, could be associated with an increase in CVD-related emergency visits and a similar effect was observed with lower temperature measured no more than three days prior to the visit. Ozone concentrations were measured at three sites in Zagreb (Croatia) in the summer of 2005. Two measuring sites were in urban areas, while the third site was in a rural area about 30 km to the south from the centre of Zagreb. Hourly ozone averages varied between 1 µg m-3 and 209 µg m-3. Average concentrations were the lowest in the rural area, even though elevated concentrations were recorded occasionally. However, the weather conditions during measurements were untypical for that time of the year; over the summer of 2005 there were many rainy and cloudy days. Ozone concentrations at all three sites were the highest on Saturdays and Sundays, and the lowest on Thursdays.
