This research investigates the integration of Urban Environmental Quality, Materials and Resource Management, and Green and Sustainable Environment within the international maritime education framework at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran (STIP Jakarta/ Maritime Institute of Jakarta). The study explores cadet experiences in Nautical, Technical, and Port and Shipping Management Majors, analysing theoretical foundations, curriculum satisfaction, practical training, and the incorporation of Environmental Science elements. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data is gathered through document analysis and self-reported reflections from 100 randomly selected cadets. The findings reveal distinct dynamics across majors, indicating a strong alignment between theoretical foundations and curriculum satisfaction. However, variations exist in the emphasis on practical training and the integration of Environmental Science elements. Port and Shipping Management Majors stand out with a notable commitment to sustainability principles, while Nautical and Technical Majors show potential areas for enhancement. The implications for future research underscore the need for ongoing refinements in curricula to address the evolving demands of the maritime industry. The study contributes to the scholarly discourse on international maritime education, providing insights for academic institutions to foster environmentally conscious and globally competent maritime professionals.

National identity is an important national conscience and plays a key spiritual role in maintaining national unity, stability and promoting the healthy and rapid development of the country. As an essential driver of education, the discipline must assume a major responsibility for national identity education. This study integrates national identity education into high school geography teaching, combines the latest geography teaching theory system with literature research method, text analysis method to analyze the components and specific content of national identity in high school geography teaching, and establishes a new teaching model. Simultaneously, the theme of "maritime rights and interests and ocean development strategy" was selected for teaching experiment, and the impact of the teaching mode proposed in this paper on the students' learning efficiency in geography is investigated by questionnaire. The results of the teaching experiment show that the proposed teaching model can improve students' awareness of national identity and serve as a reference for the teaching of national identity in subject subjects.

Storytelling via digital media can effectively spotlight pressing societal and environmental concerns. In Hawai'i, these issues encompass addressing climate change impacts and amplifying Indigenous viewpoints within academic contexts. This report discusses "Communicating Creativity," a course offered by the School of Communication and Information at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. This four-week summer intensive course was part of Na Ko'oko'o, a Hawaiian leadership program for Native Hawaiian students and other students with strong commitments to Native Hawaiian communities. Students enrolled in the course spent one week at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) on Moku o Lo'e, Kane'ohe Bay, O'ahu. The course aimed to guide students in creating media content (filmmaking) rooted in Hawaiian epistemologies and praxis, bridging Indigenous knowledge with Western scientific perspectives through art, creativity, and visual communication in order to promote interdisciplinary dialogue. Additionally, it featured "talk story" sessions with Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners and HIMB faculty and students, exploring the interface between traditional knowledge and conventional science. This report reflects on lessons learned during the course and underscores the potential of experiential learning to drive socio-ecological change.

This study investigates the innovative work behavior (IWB) of marine lecturers, considering work motivation (WM), organizational culture (OC), and soft skill competence (SSC). Data from 145 respondents representing ten higher education polytechnics in Indonesia were analyzed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Respondents answered 54 Likert-scale questions, revealing that SSC significantly shapes IWB (estimated value: 0.504), primarily through problem-solving ability. However, WM showed no significant impact on IWB, possibly due to non-influential dimensions like science, technology, environment, and society. Incorporating technological developments as moderating variables could enhance this relationship. Notably, SSC and OC exhibit crucial relationships with IWB, highlighting their importance over WM. These findings shed light on the complex dynamics influencing IWB among marine lecturers, emphasizing the significance of SSC and OC in fostering innovation in the maritime education sector.

This research investigates the post-internship phase for cadets at the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran Jakarta with a focus on curriculum effectiveness, vocational training impact, language proficiency challenges, technology integration preferences, and the intricate influence of geographical diversity. Results reveal the integrative curriculum's success in transitioning theoretical knowledge to practical application, emphasizing the critical role of vocational training. Language proficiency nuances and a desire for balanced technology integration emerge, while geographical diversity affects cultural adaptation. Implications include refining maritime education, fostering inclusivity, and aligning educational practices with industry demands. Recognizing limitations, the study advocates for broader institutional research and targeted language proficiency investigations in future studies.

This research investigates the integration of environmental science education within maritime curricula at the Maritime Institute Jakarta. Focusing on 70 cadets across Nautical, Technical, and Port and Shipping Management majors, a qualitative descriptive approach is employed. Results reveal varying levels of environmental awareness, integration perception, and challenges. Nautical Major demonstrates high awareness and positivity but faces time constraints. Technical Major shows a mixed perception with resistance to change. Port and Shipping Management Major lags behind, identifying a lack of clear guidelines. The research aligns with theoretical frameworks, emphasising tailored approaches to curriculum development. Implications include curriculum adjustments, targeted interventions, and strategic communication. The results contribute to the goal of producing "eco-navigators" -- maritime professionals adept at both technical proficiency and environmental consciousness. As the maritime industry navigates sustainability challenges, this research provides valuable insights for refining environmental science education, fostering a new generation of maritime professionals aligned with global sustainability imperatives.

Mathematics learning using high-order thinking skills is crucial for students. High-order thinking skills can be developed through learning materials with contexts relevant to the student's environment. This research aims to: produce maritime context mathematics teaching materials for higher-order thinking in Junior High Schools that are valid, practical, and have a potential effect on analytical and evaluation skills. The subjects of this study were 7th-grade students at SMP Tamansiswa Palembang, SMP Tamansiswa Mariana, and SMP Tamansiswa Sungai Buah. Data collection techniques include walkthroughs, interviews, observations, documentation, and tests. Data analysis is conducted qualitatively through descriptive methods. The research development of maritime context mathematics teaching materials for higher-order thinking at Junior High Schools has been validated based on content, construct, and language by expert reviews. During one-to-one interactions, students demonstrated their comprehension of the teaching materials and their ability to analyze and evaluate the student worksheets (SW) and questions. Practicality was observed during small group interactions, as students encountered no difficulties in solving problems on the SW and questions using analytical and evaluative skills. Furthermore, the field test demonstrated that the maritime context mathematics teaching materials have the potential to enhance students' analytical and evaluative abilities. In conclusion, this research has produced valid, practical, and potentially effective maritime context mathematics teaching materials for higher-order thinking at Junior High Schools, which can enhance students' analytical and evaluative abilities.

This study connects to an ongoing discussion about the limits and affordances of simulators as realistic and relevant contexts for professional learning, in this case in the development of visual expertise. Earlier studies of simulator-based maritime pilot training conclude that there are risks associated with so-called negative skills transfer due to a lack of photorealism in simulator environments. The aim of this study is to carefully examine how visual expertise develops in and through training in a simulated environment. Through a practice-based approach to the development of visual expertise, and by using qualitative interaction analysis of video recorded training sessions, the analytical focus is directed towards maritime pilot trainees' talk about imperfections and inconsistencies in the virtual environment during exercises in a high-fidelity bridge simulator. Considering the multi-layered nature of the maritime pilot's visual expertise, findings show that the maritime pilots in training noticed and adapted to the specific methodological and technological challenges when manoeuvring a simulated vessel. During such reflection-in-action, they also commented on and explored the differences between, navigating in a simulator, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, navigating on board a ship. Instead of concluding that there is a risk for negative skills transfer that follows from the differences between the two contexts of navigating, we argue that the challenges introduced by representations encountered when training in a virtual environment may add to the expertise of the trainees and lead to enriched conceptual, methodological, and technical knowledge regarding the specificities of visually demanding and ambiguous navigation situations. In this way, this study contributes to advance our understanding of learning in virtual environments to the frontline of learning research.

To establish good maritime governance, the Indonesian government must pay attention to maritime security aspects in every maritime policy and integrate maritime security education into the national education curriculum. However, implementing the World Maritime Axis concept, the Indonesian government still needs to consider the maritime security perspective as a top priority. The ultimate goal of good maritime governance development should include the strength of the Navy as the most important supporting element and the implementation of maritime security training and education for Indonesian maritime society. This study aims to analyze the efforts of the Joko Widodo (Jokowi) administration in addressing maritime security issues through the implemented maritime security training and education programs. The research method used is qualitative descriptive by using secondary data from a literature review and interpretation found in previous journal articles, with data collection techniques through literature study. The study results indicate that addressing maritime security issues requires hard and soft efforts from the government, including implementing maritime security training and education programs for Indonesian maritime society and integrating maritime security education into the national education curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceived sense of comfort and belonging of girl participants, aged 15-16, engaged within a school-based offering of the Marine Education Advanced Education (MATE) underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) program (MATE-ROV). MATE-ROV is a competition-based educational robotics (ER) program that can offer experiences in the design, fabrication, and testing of an original ROV similar to what one would experience in relevant sectors of the marine industry. A qualitative case study design was selected to document and analyze participant narratives and explore their sense of belonging within the intragroup and intergroup contexts. With a purposeful sample of 5 (N=5), the study gathered data using a three-phased approach with data collected through the use of questionnaires, interviews and observations. The study sought to answer the overarching research question: How do experiences in educational robotics impact feelings of comfort and belonging for girl participants? Three primary findings emerged from this qualitative study. First, intragroup relationships foster a connected social identity that can support comfort and belonging. Second, a connected social identity does not automatically build a perceived expansiveness in comparable groups. Third, successful domain performance or effectiveness does not compensate for the potential impact of stereotype threat.

Many education and learning experts currently recommend the flipped classroom model as an alternative to learning after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to explore the impact of the flipped classroom model on social skills and problem-solving skills for cadets. This research used a sequential mix method involving 50 maritime students in semester 7 of the Engineering Study Program at the Maritime Sciences Polytechnic Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Researchers used two main instruments, namely problem-solving skill tests and interviews. Furthermore, in the quantitative analysis, the researcher ran paired sample t-tests and one-way Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) using the SPSS 25.00 program. In addition, researchers also analysed qualitative data from interviews using thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that the flipped classroom model proved to have a positive effect on the problem-solving skills of maritime students. Other findings state that the cadets also respond positively to the flipped classroom model. Researchers recommend that teachers use the flipped classroom model, especially in dealing with learning in the post-pandemic era, like today.

How well do we know how non-humans experience environmental stressors and how do we communicate that knowledge as educators? This paper addresses these questions by way of an auto-ethnographic account of the author's experience of attempting to listen to the Great Barrier Reef, off the Queensland coast. Through a series of methodological failures and roadblocks, this paper discusses the difficulties in understanding non-human sensory worlds. Following the auto-ethnographic account, the paper explores how anthropological pedagogies can contribute to environmental education of non-human experiences more broadly. The paper uses anthropological pedagogy to draw an analogy between ethnocentrism/cultural relativism and anthropocentrism/ecocentrism. Utilising practices of "third place" then demonstrates how the latter terms of these relationships are correctives to the former terms rather than oppositions. This paper concludes by suggesting ways in which the lessons learned can be applied to environmental education. It recommends creating a third space environmental curriculum which defamiliarises human experience and creates a zone of contact between humans and non-humans. The use of mediating technologies and artistic practice in conjunction with scientific education is recommended to maintain a critical perspective of human knowledge and biological limitations in creating experiential relationships with the environment.

The study aimed to analyze lexical items underpinned in the textbooks used in the current teaching of ESP and GE. Using content analysis, a systematic evaluation of texts to examine nuances to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative data. This was such of importance, however, difficult to study due to issues of interest like in the study, frequency of lexical items in ESP, and GE textbooks. Results found 13,713 lexical items in Hospitality Management, 17,561 in Criminology, 4576 in Tourism, 7167 in Marine Engineering, and 512 in Information Technology. Furthermore, the overall percentage of ESP lexical items fell in Tier 2 (with multiple-meaning while the least was in Tier 3, specifically on context-specific vocabulary. It is the core of vocabulary learning to ensure English language teaching. It is its goal to help learners better understand language, allowing them to understand others as they want to express themselves as well. This applies not only in speaking but also in writing and reading. Wilkins (1972, p. 111-112) stated that without grammar very little understanding can be acquired and without vocabulary there can be no learning at all. Thus, even without good grammar, so long as you equipped with useful words and expression, one can still manage to communicate. Lewis (1993) argued that "lexis is the heart of language" and that it develops a better fluency and expression in English. He also added the significance to the learners of acquiring a more productive vocabulary knowledge, also, their eagerness to develop their own personal vocabulary strategies. Thus, a proposed bridge model program was recommended to highlight the study findings using the lexicons found from the different respective courses.

Hawai?i students, and in particular Native Hawaiian students, face high rates of attrition and low representation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) academic majors and careers, but place-based Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) such as the Research Experiences in Marine Science (REMS) summer program may help to better engage these students with scientific content understanding and skills development. This article assesses latent factors of student gains after participating in the REMS program as they relate to student science identity. Results from an exploratory factor analysis examining the internal structure of an assessment measure delivered during the program suggest strong evidence of four latent factors in student self-reported learning gains: Content Understanding, Scientific Skills, Interest, and Integration. These factors will guide the development and delivery of the REMS survey as it is applied to additional cohorts of students participating in REMS and other, similar programs being developed and implemented in Hawai?i to support Native Hawaiian students. Although there were no significant relationships between these factors and responses to a science identity survey item, additional insights from an alumna of the program highlight how place-based elements in CUREs provide authentic and rigorous research training experiences for students from populations historically marginalized in STEM.

Nearly every student today is coming into informal education programs with some form of trauma. This is especially true as we examine the long-lasting impacts of climate change, the pandemic, and identity-based prejudice on children. In response, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has undertaken a transformative journey in its education programs. This paper explores our evolving approaches, centered in trauma-informed education, maker-centered agency, and equity-based practices. We outline some of our trauma-informed practices, including hiring a full-time school counselor and integrating wellness practices into programming. We share our journey to maker-centered education, with the goal of building agency and resilience in students as they tackle environmental challenges. We describe steps we've taken toward equity-based practices, such as revamping our hiring practices and building culturally relevant pedagogies. Reflecting on this journey, we emphasize the ongoing nature of this work and invite collaborators to envision and co-create a more just and sustainable future.

To truly fulfill their missions and make positive strides toward the conservation of our ocean, aquariums need to reach diverse audiences and reflect their local communities. Reaching audiences not adequately represented at our facilities takes work and time. It requires building relationships and trust. We need to understand which audiences are not represented and why, and work with them to make our aquariums more inclusive and welcoming. The Oregon Coast Aquarium's efforts to better engage our local Latino community are a work in progress. However, we have made some positive strides and our continuing work can help inform others of the inherent opportunities and struggles that are part of this process.

Embedding learning abroad as part of the curriculum has become popular in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US and European countries. In Australia, the government has actively promoted and committed to funding students' learning abroad in the Indo-Pacific region which is considered to be strategic to the nation's prosperity and public diplomacy. The majority of the literature on outbound student mobility has concentrated on its benefits to students' development of global competence and employability. However, little is known about how students are engaged in curriculum-specific learning and development of discipline-specific knowledge through short-term mobility experiences. This article responds to this gap in the existing literature. It aims to examine how a short-term mobility program to Japan affects Australian undergraduate students' curriculum-specific learning. The article draws on 45 interviews with science students across three rounds (pre-departure, in-country, and re-entry). It uses Barnett and Coate's framework of curriculum and Tran's concept of mobility as becoming to analyse whether and how the short-term mobility program engages students in their "knowing," "acting" and "becoming" whereby they are able to construct, organise and build on what they know and can do to arrive at new knowledge, skills and ways of being/becoming. Based on the findings of the study, we discuss implications for how learning abroad in the Indo-Pacific can potentially enhance Australian students' deep and meaningful learning in not only cultural and social but also academic aspects. Practical principles for optimising students' curriculum-specific learning through short-term mobility programs are generated.

This study explored the influence of using Curriculum-Based Readers Theater (CBRT) on promoting 12 sixth graders' oceanic knowledge and vocabulary learning in an elementary school in Taiwan. Based on the analysis of both quantitative (oceanic knowledge tests and vocabulary knowledge tests) and qualitative data (interviews, videos, and reflections), the study had the following major findings. First, CBRT instruction was effective for improving learners' oceanic knowledge through repeated reading. Second, CBRT was beneficial for learners' receptive ability in recognizing spoken forms of the target vocabulary. Suggestions on effective implementation of CBRT into content areas or issues were provided.

In a range of settings, human operators make decisions with the assistance of automation, the reliability of which can vary depending upon context. Currently, the processes by which humans track the level of reliability of automation are unclear. In the current study, we test cognitive models of learning that could potentially explain how humans track automation reliability. We fitted several alternative cognitive models to a series of participants' judgements of automation reliability observed in a maritime classification task in which participants were provided with automated advice. We examined three experiments including eight between-subjects conditions and 240 participants in total. Our results favoured a two-kernel delta-rule model of learning, which specifies that humans learn by prediction error, and respond according to a learning rate that is sensitive to environmental volatility. However, we found substantial heterogeneity in learning processes across participants. These outcomes speak to the learning processes underlying how humans estimate automation reliability and thus have implications for practice.

Scientist-led K-12 outreach offers many benefits to scientists, teachers, and students; however, many of these programs are top down rather than collaborative. Our team facilitated a museum-based scientist-teacher partnership to co-design a lesson on shark biology for middle school students. Following the implementation of the lesson, we conducted interviews with the scientist and teacher participants. The participants described several benefits for the students including contextualizing science in the real world, providing exposure to new careers, and humanizing scientists. Teacher benefits included increased content knowledge and feeling reenergized to teach their subject. The scientist gained knowledge about science standards and classroom pedagogy. The challenges to the partnership included time constraints and restrictions enforced by the school districts. Using the findings from our study, we describe how other organizations can facilitate similar scientist-teacher partnerships to help improve science literacy and career aspirations. Scientist-teacher partnerships are highly effective for improving scientists' communication skills, increasing teachers' content knowledge, and contextualizing science for students.

This manuscript introduces a novel General Chemistry experiment designed to incorporate modern instrumental methods and bioinspired materials in the context of marine environments and sustainability. The experiment explores the influence of collagen on the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO[subscript 3]) polymorphs over two 2 h lab sessions, focusing on vaterite, aragonite, and calcite. By engaging in this experiment, students reinforce their knowledge, learn key concepts in General Chemistry, and develop essential skills required for the course. Additionally, students use advanced analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), to investigate crystal formation and determine polymorph compositions. The experiment also simulates the effects of ocean acidification on CaCO[subscript 3] crystals. Student feedback emphasizes the value of practical application and real-world relevance, making this experiment a valuable addition not only to General Chemistry courses, but also to advanced courses including analytical methods, physical chemistry, nanotechnology, environment science, or material science.

Ocean literacy (OL) proposes to include ocean and marine environment-related content in school curricula. Such a topic has been deemed effective for citizens to develop actions and attitudes towards the health of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to verify the presence and frequency of OL principles and concepts in the Brazilian high school curriculum at the federal (National Curricular Parameters-PCN) and regional (Rio de Janeiro -- Curricular Reference-RC) levels. Both PCN and RC contained OL-related content. Moreover, Biology and Geography were the subjects with the highest numbers of OL concepts, both in the PCN (26 and 27, respectively) and in the RC-RJ documents (28 and 24, respectively), while OL concepts were very little represented in History subject. A Mann-Whitney U-test did not indicate statistically significant differences in the number of concepts between PCN and RC-RJ (p = 0.54). A principal component analysis discriminated the documents according to subjects, regardless of their origin (federal or regional). These results provide an unbiased assessment of the relationship between the curriculum and OL in a strongly affected area (Rio de Janeiro State coastal zone [CZ]). Therefore, these results provide valuable support for managers seeking to promote effective CZ management practices and public compliance.

This qualitative study chronicles one of the fundamental pillars of the Curriculum and Community Enterprise for Restoration Science (CCERS). The professional development is focused on curricula that are grounded in the community-based environmental restoration of the waterways of New York Harbor. Centered on the restoration of the native oyster population, hundreds of New York City public school teachers take part in this experience with the intent of increasing their own place-based pedagogical content knowledge and skills. Most of the participants teach in school with populations that are underrepresented in post-secondary STEM majors and STEM related careers. Professional learning activities for teachers and community scientists were offered throughout the 2021 calendar year. Professional Learning Activity Surveys were administered and teachers responded to questions about how they participated in CCERS events, the ways in which CCERS participation has impacted their teaching practice, whether they use CCERS activities for student research, and ways CCERS participation impacts student STEM career interest. An intended outcome is to instill a STEM identity in students identifying as URM and to bring STEM career awareness to these students. More than 72% of the teachers in the professional development sessions agreed that the professional learning activities were effective in providing new STEM content knowledge and best practices for teaching. The majority also reported that the sessions enabled them to increase their students' engagement with STEM and interest in STEM careers.

Undergraduate research experiences benefit students' scientific skills, and recent trends in undergraduate research and education include focusing on interdisciplinary projects and on place-based learning. Here we describe a semester-long pilot interdisciplinary undergraduate research program focused on local aquatic ecosystems, discuss perceived benefits of this research approach, and show how this program's structure could be modified for use at other undergraduate institutions. The program included nine undergraduate students and five faculty from multiple scientific disciplines (geography, virology, ecology, vertebrate and invertebrate zoology) and involved approximately half a day of research per student per week and weekly hour-long lab meetings of the entire group, followed by end-of-semester poster presentations to the university. Student self-assessment data indicated that the program improved students' perceptions of their scientific ability, as well as their comfort level at performing scientific skills. We suggest that bringing together faculty from multiple disciplines with projects focused on the same local ecosystem is a valuable technique for providing undergraduate students with not only hands-on research experience, but also with (1) exposure to a diversity of research areas and methods and (2) a better understanding of the ecosystems in and around their campus.

Due to the inherently dangerous environment in the maritime industry, it is an essential aspect for the human resources in the industry to have a high level of knowledge, skill and competence. Therefore, maritime education and training needs to be structured as a unique instructional design model that will ensure the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and competencies at the highest level. In this paper, we develop a new approach using an axiomatic design methodology extended with fuzzy set theory to define the suitable instructional design model for maritime education and training. Accordingly, we aimed to establish a decision support system for instructional designers at an institutional level and instructors at the individual level who focus on instructional design, development, and processes. The demonstration of the proposed approach is conducted for basic offshore safety induction and emergency training which is one of the compulsory training courses for people who already work or will work on offshore facilities.

This study examined Arab high-school students' decision-making ability (their cognitive level) regarding a sea turtle conservation issue in relation to three independent variables: the proximity of their residence to the sea, the type of residence (city or village), and their gender. The study population consisted of tenth-grade students in high schools from the Arab sector: from urban localities, rural localities, localities close to the sea, and localities far from the sea. The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) The average Arab student's decision-making ability is low. Most Arab students were found to have a low cognitive level. (2) A clear difference exists between students from localities close to the sea and those far from the sea. Students from localities close to the sea had greater decision-making ability. (3) A clear difference exists between students from urban localities and those from rural localities. Students from urban areas had more decision-making ability. A significant difference exists between boys and girls: girls had more decision-making ability. The main conclusion from the study is that the cognitive level of Arab students' decision-making ability in the context of sea turtle conservation is low. This finding indicates that traditional teaching in the Arab education system does not promote, develop, and improve this ability. Most of the time the teacher asks questions and is situated in the center of the activity. Students noted that their teachers tend to involve them in lessons, but not enough in class discussions.

In an increasingly data driven world, the need for a qualified STEM workforce is essential. Increasing the diversity of this workforce increases the social and economic possibilities for the individual as well as national economic status and global prominence in innovation and technology. The Curriculum and Community Enterprise for Restoration Science has created a nexus between STEM education and possible college and career pathways in data science through ecological experiences in the classroom and in the field. Focusing on data collection and interpretation, New York City students from underserved communities are exposed to the local marine environment and efforts to restore aquatic species as well as the water quality in New York Harbor. The use of an innovative and motivating curriculum for both students and teachers bolstered confidence in acquired skills and content. By introducing students to these heretofore untapped STEM areas of interest, the BOP CCERS + STEM C Project has created opportunities in college and career options for underrepresented populations and the possibility of growing a more diverse STEM workforce.

This paper presented the development of the Dick and Carry model steps 1 to 4 of, namely the identification of educational objectives, educational analysis, analysis and context of the learner, and the formulation of performance objectives. The study was conducted from January to April 2020. The participants in this study were high school students from the coastal region of North Jakarta. The sampling technique used in this study was random sampling. The instruments used to collect the research data are the questionnaire/questionnaire, observation, and interview. The data were analyzed in a qualitative description. The results of this study indicate that the formulation of the learning objectives is that students should receive marine education that is integrated with natural science learning in schools, students should be taught using methods of learning that are contextual within the daily problems in the student's home environment, i.e. problem-based learning / problem-solving models, students should be taught using interactive learning aids such as media based on information technology such as mobile learning, the assessments to be developed include 3 aspects namely cognitive, affective and psychomotor.

In recent years, marine science education has received increasing attention around the world, but the integration of STEM education into the marine curriculum is rarely applied to lower-secondary schools. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of a teaching module on the topic of marine science, developed using a STEM approach, on the motivation, interest, and marine science achievements. The 9th-grade students from two classes in a Taiwanese public school were recruited in this study. Students in the experimental group were taught using the STEM course. Students in the control group were taught in a traditional didactic teaching course. Pre- and post-tests were used to determine marine science achievement, interest, and learning motivation. The experimental group gained significantly superior scores in three out of four dimensions towards motivation and two out of three dimensions interest. A significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group, with the former showing increased marine science achievement over the latter in higher-order thinking; however, no significant differences were with respect to cognition. It is concluded that involving STEM-based implementations in teaching, the subject "Marine Science" increases the success rate and attitude towards the subject of students.

This paper presents the project Hydrobots, which the Eugenides Foundation has run in Greek secondary education schools since 2012. It is based on the MIT's Sea Perch project and more than 300 student teams got involved and built successfully an underwater remotely operated vehicle. The formal Greek education system lacks large-scale STEM-related activities, despite the growing demand for qualified scientists and engineers. The project serves as a great introduction to STEM disciplines through robotics, by applying the Engineering Design Process (EDP). It creates a friendly learning environment, students learn important issues of school curriculum, develop STEM skills and competences as well as transversal skills. The project continues after the vehicle construction. Teams from vocational high schools are more focused on modifying it, while the rest teams usually use the robot for scientific experimentation in marine environments. A large number of the teams upgrade the vehicle by adding a sensor module, the Hydrosensor, provided by the Foundation too, and in some cases they improve this prototype even more. The teams, which conduct experiments with their robot, follow a specific procedure. We also present the results of a large survey among the participants, students and teachers, who evaluated the achievement of project learning objectives. The majority of the teams reported that the project has contributed to their positive attitude towards Science and Technology, improved their performance and developed their transversal skills. Almost all the responders illustrate an enthusiastic reception of the project from the students and the school community that affected the students career perspective. The project Hydrobots seems an ideal STEM tool for those teachers in Greece who desire to be more effective through innovation, while the involved students become familiar with STEM key aspects and the engineering thinking.

This study aims at evaluating the environmental education (EE) and communication intervention for the valorization of migratory fish resources in an estuary of northern Portugal. The EE component intervention was implemented among Middle School pupils of that region. Students' knowledge was quantitatively evaluated with an experimental approach of pre-testing and post-testing, on the ocean and estuarine literacy (OEL) and biology of migratory species, such as sea lamprey. This study also analyzes the communication component developed via social media. Results of the EE component show an evident increment of OEL (p < 0.05). It is also highlighted that students had previous knowledge on issues that are not covered in the curriculum. Social media has shown to be an effective communication tool mostly among the scientific community (e.g., Ethnobiology). The research has various implications to OEL since it brings a new perspective towards the integration of ocean literacy in formal education; as well as the valorization of Students' local ecological knowledge and of inter-generational dynamics. This study contributed to promoting local biodiversity, OEL, and participatory local governance of these ecosystems.

Maritime Education and Training (MET) is an integral part of the global maritime industry, playing an essential role in ensuring that the sector is supplied continuously with a skilled workforce. The successful outcomes of the educational content delivery in MET institutes depend, to a certain extent, on the maritime instructor's ability to create conducive learning environments utilizing all of the resources available. The self-efficacy of maritime instructors in various facets, most notably their proficiency with the use of technology in classrooms, can lead to the introduction of transformative learning practices. Accurately measuring their self-reported technological proficiency could be the initial step in this direction. This study aimed to measure the self-reported technology proficiency of maritime instructors using an established and validated scale: Technology Proficiency Self-Assessment for the 21st century (TPSA-C21). The scale was administered, using an online survey, to a sample of MET instructors within Europe and the UK, with n = 62 valid responses received. Using descriptive statistics and the evaluation of the measurement model, the study highlighted the perceived level of proficiency of the MET instructors along dimensions such as email, world-wide web use, emerging tools, teaching with technology, integrated applications, and teaching with emerging technologies. The survey also measured the perceived level of technology integration for maritime instructors according to the Concerned-Based Adoption Model--Level of Use (CBAM--LoU) classification. The results indicate a potential area of improvement for maritime instructors with regard to their self-reported proficiency, namely in the dimension of teaching with emerging technology. The implications for the MET domain, the respondent demographics and the future research directions are discussed.

Identifying English for specific purposes material for particular students is the process of selecting, adjusting, and evaluating English material based on the unique needs of students. Need analysis is needed to identify ESP learning material. This research aimed to identify the students' needs based on goals, necessities, wants, and lacks in learning the English language in Maritime Affairs and Fisheries School using the mixed method with sequential explanatory strategy. Through the purposive sampling, thirty students of the department of fisheries product processing technology at Sekolah Usaha Perikanan Menengah (SUPM) Negeri Sorong became the participants for this research. The recent research used a mixed-method design through a sequential explanatory strategy. Data collection instruments were Guttman scale questionnaires and Focus Group Discussion (FGD. Questionnaires were given to students to determine the goals, necessities, want, and lack of students. The research conducted the FGD to have a more in-depth explanation gathered from the questionnaires' answers. The results showed that ESP material needed by the students of the fisheries product processing technology department was English learning material related to fisheries product processing technology used when having a job. Students were expected to learn ESP topics such as the captain duties, shipping, fisheries, operating machinery, fisheries conversations, cook term, and other English materials correlated with the department of fisheries product processing technology. Therefore, the recent study implied that the teacher must provide ESP material suited to the students' major other than general English to meet the student's need for future work.

The English syllabus provides the students at the Maritime Vocational Schools (MVS) with necessary Maritime English (ME) competence compatible with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) curriculum, or the Indonesian Seafarers Quality Standard System (QSS) Curriculum (adapted from the IMO, in an Indonesian context). The gap in the ME learning process which represents a crucial problem in the Indonesian MVS is the availability of a syllabus for the subject. This study aims to evaluate the existing ME syllabus from the 2013 Curriculum for the MVS. This evaluation seeks to discover whether the given syllabus fulfills the real demands of the workplace by comparing it with the competencies presented by the QSS Curriculum. The result of this evaluation is to redesign ME competencies according to the international maritime workplace requirements. Observations, questionnaires, and interviews regarding the English competencies used on board ship were utilized to gather qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicated that (1) the current ME syllabus is acceptable for six out of the eight competencies proven to be needed for deck officer class IV, and (2) a new ME syllabus consisting of fourteen ME competencies according to the 2013 curriculum, The results of a needs analysis in the maritime workplace is proposed.

The development of informal science learning programs (ISLPs) is a growing strategy among scientists seeking to engage communities. However, little scholarship exists on higher education ISLPs, limiting best practices for program development. This article explores the perceived impacts for student learners and scientist instructors of an international ISLP focused on marine science, using a mixed-methods approach of questionnaires, interviews, a task-based focus group, and participant observation. Learners perceived an increase in research skills and knowledge, and identified positive impacts associated with networking and forming connections. Learners did not significantly change their attitudes toward marine science or beliefs about careers in science. Instructors felt they helped advance their field and perceived positive impacts from cultural exchange, whereas only a few identified professional development impacts. This study suggests that higher education ISLPs should focus on creating space for different types of connections and increasing how scientists' participation is valued within the profession.

The major purpose of this study was to explore the learning outcomes on marine education for 3rd graders in Taipei. A quasi-experimental design with a single group was used in this study. Students in the experimental group (N=56) were given eight weeks of marine education activities and a one-day field trip at Tamsui River & Estuary Park in New Taipei city. Two research instruments were used in this study, including a Marine Education Achievement Test and an Attitude towards Marine Education Scale. The results were obtained by t-test analysis. The results of this study were (1) the Marine Education Achievement Test showed students in the post-test achieved higher scores than in the pre-test (t = 14.21, p < 0.001); and (2) the Attitude towards Marine Education Scale showed students in the post-test had higher scores than in the pre-test (t = 4.28, p < 0.001). Therefore, it can be concluded the marine education activities and field trip were effective for 3rd graders' learning on marine education in this study.

Maritime user interfaces for ships' bridges are highly dependent on the context in which they are used, and rich maritime context is difficult to recreate in the early stages of user-centered design processes. Operations in Arctic waters where crews are faced with extreme environmental conditions, technology limitations and a lack of accurate navigational information further increase this challenge. There is a lack of research supporting the user-centered design of workplaces for hazardous Arctic operations. To meet this challenge, this paper reports on the process of developing virtual reality-reconstructed operational scenarios to connect stakeholders, end-users, designers, and human factors specialists in a joint process. This paper explores how virtual reality-reconstructed operational scenarios can be used as a tool both for concept development and user testing. Three operational scenarios were developed, implemented in a full mission bridge simulator, recreated in virtual reality (VR), and finally tested on navigators (end-users). Qualitative data were captured throughout the design process and user-testing, resulting in a thematic analysis that identified common themes reflecting the experiences gained throughout this process. In conclusion, we argue that operational scenarios, rendered in immersive media such as VR, may be an important and reusable asset when supporting maritime design processes and in maritime training and education.

This paper sets out to enhance current Maritime Crew Resource Management (MCRM) training, and with that to improve the training of technical and non-technical skills given to bachelor maritime officers. The rationale for CRM training is improving safety performance by reducing accidents caused by human error. The central notion of CRM training is that applying good resource management principles during day-to-day operations will lead to a beneficial change in attitudes and behaviour regarding safety. This article therefore indicates that enhanced MCRM should play a more structural role in the training of student officers. However, the key question is: what are the required changes in attitude and behaviour that will create sufficient adaptability to improve safety performance? To provide an answer, we introduce the Resilience Engineering (RE) theory. From an RE point of view, we elaborate on the relation between team adaptability and safety performance, operationalized as a competence profile. In addition, a case study of the 'Rotterdam Approach' will be presented, in which the MCRM training design has been enhanced with RE, with the objective to train team adaptability skills for improved safety performance.

As study abroad education becomes increasingly common, so does the need to understand how different outreach opportunities alter the study abroad experience. To determine how outreach program design links to perceptions of personal growth, we surveyed 72 college students who participated in different youth outreach activities while studying abroad. Being a mentor in a sequenced, active, focused, and explicit (SAFE) youth outreach program increased the probability of perceived personal growth in college students by 27% relative to unstructured outreach activities in the same location. Thus, we suggest the SAFE framework be considered when designing youth outreach activities. Additionally, 44% of respondents considered outreach options as a factor when selecting a study abroad program. Combined, these findings provide an incentive for study abroad organizations to invest in structured youth outreach opportunities for their clientele--in what may be a triple-win opportunity for study abroad organizations, their students, and youth in host country locations.

The underwater robot (UR) is an embodiment of interdisciplinary technologies, integrating underwater communication, machinery, marine science, computer science, and robotics. Although URs enable a highly engaging and exploratory construction that can foster children's engineering education and ocean literacy, little work has explored UR design and education for children. In this paper, we present a study using URs to engage children in exploring engineering, robotics, environmental science, and marine sustainability. We introduce ModBot, a modular UR-making toolkit for children that uses hardware blocks and software applications for UR creation. We describe a study with 31 children (ages 5-8; 16 girls and 15 boys) and report how they learned UR concepts such as buoyancy and balance through playing with the ModBot kit and creating their own URs. This study is intended to investigate how URs can be used to spark children's interest in water environments and make a connection to robotics by the creation of their own URs.

Vean is a tool used to catch fish in traditional way in Ohoi Disuk, Kei Island, in Southeast Maluku. This study aims to examine vean tradition as a local wisdom of customary people that has been inherited from generation to generation. This research uses qualitative method applying descriptive analytical approach. The number of respondents is 10 people. The results show that the construction of vean resembles the human body, which implies that humans must move their limbs to work in order to meet the life needs. In addition, vean (sero) can also build relationship between the sea and humans as keepers and connoisseurs of nature. Vean has three main motivations, namely economic aspect to create quality of life, social aspect to develop a sense of justice without expecting anything in return, and ecological aspect for the conservation of ecosystems and marine life. On the other hand, vean has very meaningful values to maintain kinship and brotherhood in building social relations, creating a good social harmony. Based on the perspective, motivation, and values contained in vean, this local wisdom can be used as a way to strengthen maritime culture in history learning because it comes from the culture of local community as a source of learning.

In this study, we focus on a process of change in a polytechnic school in Denmark where the school management team decided to promote a non-traditional pedagogical approach. We examine teachers' moral evaluation of their own teaching, of students, and of learning during this transition in order to grasp the degree to which teachers needed to reconceptualize or reorient their traditional instructional roles and identities in order to meet the functional demands of the new forms of PBL-based teaching and learning. Based on qualitative interviews with teachers and heads of schools, we found that the process of change mobilized competing definitions of the legitimate teacher, the legitimate student, and legitimate knowledge in this organizational context.

Few investigations of museums have examined the potential of varying displays as related to learning outcomes. This study focused on two museum spaces, presenting different historical events and featuring different objects' characteristics and arrangements, as related to seventh- and eighth-graders' learning and experiences during a self-guided visit. Students responses to pre- and post-visit questionnaires were analyzed qualitatively and via some statistical measures. Three major factors emerged related to students performance: (a) the relevancy of the represented topic to students' personal world, (b) the use of large and dominant objects as centerpieces that form a framework for processing the assembled information, and (c) the split-attention effect. Implications are discussed for objects' characteristics and arrangements in the museum space that promote learning.

Worldwide initiatives have been promoting awareness on marine environmental issues. In Brazil Maritime Mentality Program arises from political disputes over the right to use maritime spaces, Coastal Marine Environmental Education shares the same theoretical basis as Environmental Education and Ocean Literacy appears in the USA and became globally widespread after its inclusion as one goal of Ocean Decade. Based on a literature review this article gives a panorama of the history, working groups, institutional links, theoretical framework and impact of the published material of these three working fields. The conclusion is that the conceptual framework of all three is limited and do not address the deep causes of environmental degradation which is the current social-political-economic system.

This case study shares feedback from program alumni who are from underrepresented groups in STEM and who participated in either an undergraduate internship program or a Bridge to Ph.D. program designed to broaden participation in the marine and environmental sciences. The internship program was hosted by a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), in partnership with local collaborators who hosted students. The Bridge to Ph.D. program was co-designed by faculty leaders from the HBCU and faculty partners at a primarily White institution (PWI) who hosted the program on their campus. Interviews were conducted one to four years after participation in one of the programs to learn whether students were still involved in the geosciences and to document the ways they used agency to navigate the marine sciences learning ecosystem. Almost all students were still engaged in the marine and environmental sciences, and all were still engaged in STEM fields. The agency included in their stories reiterates themes from the literature and demonstrates a range of successful pathways that can be encouraged and supported by those striving for inclusion in the geosciences. Results are described in relation to the importance of changing the shared social practices utilized within the geosciences to support inclusion, particularly regarding how success is defined.

This study reviews the research literature on blue health promotion and the value of multiple forms of coastal and marine recreation and activities across societal contexts, with contributions from the Nordic region. It re-emphasizes the need for interrogating whose benefits and interests are promoted and the diversity of physical cultures and activities. The conceptualisation of "salutogenetic" health interventions contextualises the review beyond individualised and medicalised scopes through the research question: "Whether and how does integrated coastal and marine planning and management seek to facilitate and enhance physically active blue health promotion that is also socio-ecologically inclusive?" Following the scoping review framework by Arksey and O'Malley (2005), the study identifies recent research and gaps through an iterative process. It employs transparency on inclusion/exclusion criteria, and in the comparison and discussion concerning methodology and findings. The research techniques included searches across online databases, journals, library resources, and manually scanning reference lists and abstracts. The peer-reviewed works included are n = 58 published between 1996 and 2022, with most published between 2015 and 2022. The reviewed literature is grouped analytically into two themes: (1) Blue health promotion, interventions and activities and (2) integrated marine planning, management and policy. Against this background, the article discusses the potential of a complementary research approach combining: (a) the "salutogenetic" orientation, (b) formative interventions and (c) co-creation in blue health promotion practices. Findings suggest a need for greater differentiation concerning a socio-ecological approach to recreational blue health promotion, prioritizing locally tailored and seasonally adapted interventions.

Prior research has suggested that Project Based Learning (PBL) may affect students' performance. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of empirical studies that have examined these relationships specially, in Bachelor's Degrees and Master's degrees. This research empirically examines whether PBL improves Own apprenticeship abilities' development as well as promotes Students' subject overcoming and their professional success using data from 65 Spanish University students. Results of this study show that using PBL methodology in lessons enhances the students' Own apprenticeship abilities' development. These results demonstrate the power of over students' subject overcoming and their professional success. They display that students' subject overcoming may play a mediating role in the relationship between PBL and students' professional success. Moreover, these results cover an existing gap in literature, since there is no empirical literature that has tried to link as a whole PBL, Own apprenticeship abilities' development, Students' subject's overcoming and their Professional success.

This article centers on the use of place-based education (PBE), an internationally known and employed pedagogy. This yearlong, mixed-methods study centers on a grant-funded program aimed at supporting secondary teachers' implementation of environmental place-based education (PBE), specifically meaningful watershed education experiences (MWEEs). Intended outcomes of this grant-based program included increasing middle school students' environmental stewardship capacity; expanding their Great Lakes literacy; building teachers' capacity for implementing robust environmental PBE; and increasing teachers' capacity for teaching Great Lakes content. Situated in the Midwestern United States, two experienced PBE teachers and their middle school students (N = 226) from two separate schools participated in this study. Findings indicate that PBE teaching and learning experiences are impacted by multiple factors, including those that are program- and school-based as well as external factors such as weather and community partnerships. Moreover, when students perceive that they have opportunities to make choices and share ideas when engaged in PBE, they are more likely to see direct connections between PBE-based learning and the ways their stewardship endeavors can and do positively impact their local community and environment.

Mixed reality (XR) environments combining real-to-virtual immersive experiences provide unprecedented potential for reframing educational pedagogy and practice. XR environments provide scaffolded learning points accommodating individual needs, while enhancing sensorial and embodied experiences. XR environments can facilitate self-determined (heutagogical) experience-based learning and esthetic visualization of wicked problems, making complex knowledge more accessible. Here we report on a study exploring the design of mobile learning with education outside the classroom (EOTC), heutagogy, and free-choice learning to enhance marine ecological literacy, based on a bring your own device (BYOD) XR intervention at a marine educational center in Aotearoa New Zealand. Findings indicate that XR affordances can enhance the understanding of complex marine conservation science, facilitating ecological literacy knowledge, attitudes and behavior change. Implications include pedagogical rethinking of EOTC with self-determined mobile learning; haptic, sensorial and embodied XR design considerations for environmental education; and epistemological speculation on learning phenomena in real-to-virtual immersive environments.

Successful buy-in and support for management of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) should acknowledge the existing cultural ecosystem services and their connections to the well-being of local communities to gain positive perceptions. It is necessary to engage local stakeholders, especially among the youths, to explore governance complexities of MPAs and how to better understand cultural ecosystem services. Thus, this qualitative study investigated the perceptions of youths on cultural ecosystem services using a visual method, namely photovoice, as part of the participatory research in a newly established MPA of Tun Mustapha Park, Sabah. Three themes were identified in the process, namely social, economic, and environment. The engagement demonstrated the value of using the participatory approach, which yielded important insights of youths as a part of the community, which included the need for additional livelihood means post-establishment of MPA and issues of degradation of the marine environment. This paper contributed to the MPA governance literature specifically on the empirical youth perception which has been underrepresented as well as the employment of visual participatory methods to encourage better expression among the youths towards their living environment.
