Zinc germanium diphosphide (ZnGeP2) is a ternary semiconductor best known for its nonlinear optical properties. A primary application is optical parametric oscillators operating in the mid-infrared region. Controlled donor doping provides a method to minimize the acceptor-related absorption bands that limit the output power of these devices. In the present study, a ZnGeP2 crystal is doped with selenium during growth. Selenium substitutes for phosphorus and serves as a deep donor. Significant concentrations of native defects (zinc vacancies, germanium-on-zinc antisites, and phosphorous vacancies) are also present in the crystal. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to establish the atomic-level model for the neutral charge state of the selenium donor. The S = 1/2 signal from the neutral donors is produced at 6 K by illuminating with 633 nm light (electrons excited from doubly ionized Zn vacancies convert Se P + donors to Se P 0 donors). A g matrix, with principal values of 2.088, 2.203, and 1.904, is extracted from the angular dependence of the EPR spectrum. The principal-axis direction associated with the 1.904 principal value is close to a Se–Ge bond. This indicates an asymmetric distribution of unpaired spin density around the selenium ion and thus predicts the deep donor behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selenium-polysaccharide (Se-polysaccharide) is an organic Se compound that binds polysaccharides to Se via unique chemical interactions. Se-polysaccharide, as a functional supplement, has minimal harmful effects and is more easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Currently, there are three techniques to obtain Se-polysaccharide. Numerous studies have demonstrated that selenization modification can alter the structural and physical characterization of polysaccharide. Furthermore, Se-polysaccharide possesses stronger biological attributes, including immunomodulation, antitumor, antioxidant, hypoglycaemic, heavy metal resistance, neuroprotection, anti-inflammatory, liver protection, and other aspects, than Se and polysaccharide. Scientific studies suggest that Se-polysaccharide has the potential for future development and show that it is an effective treatment for several diseases. This paper systematically introduces the preparation methods of Se-polysaccharide, discusses the impact of selenization modification on the structural and physical characterization of polysaccharide, and analyses the biological activities and potential mechanism of Se-polysaccharides in recent years. Intercropping can increase the utilization rate of light and water and can also improve plant growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth and selenium (Se) content in seedlings of three genotypes of cherry tomato under intercropping while applying Se. The pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. The monoculture of red, yellow and purple cherry tomato; among the three genotypes of cherry tomatoes, intercropping of two genotypes with each other, at the same time intercropping of three genotypes. These results show that the biomass increased under intercropping compared with monoculture. The chlorophyll b content of purple cherry tomato increased in different intercropping combinations. Furthermore, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate of purple were increased by intercropping with red and purple cherry tomatoes. The soluble protein and soluble sugar contents in yellow and purple cherry tomato increased by 49.13% and 8.37%, respectively, under mutual intercropping. Similarly, soluble sugar increased in purple cherry tomato by intercropping with yellow and red. The activities of superoxide and peroxidase in red and yellow cherry tomato seedlings were higher in all intercropping combinations than in monoculture, whereas free proline content and relative conductivity in all cherry tomatoes decreased. The Se content of roots, stem, and leaves in seedlings increased with intercropping. Therefore, intercropping can improve the growth and Se content of cherry tomatoes, and the combination of red, yellow and purple is better, which can be used to cultivate strong seedlings. A burgeoning population, food shortage, less affordability of essential nutrients, and pandemic are the foremost global challenges for lower-to middle-income nations. Lack of proper availability of crucial nutrients leads to hidden hunger, which has become a serious threat under the current scenario and difficult situation for global policymakers, nutritionists, and public health scientists. Minerals (iron, zinc, iodine, and Selenium) and Vitamin A malnutrition are major food-related primary health problems among populations of both developed and developing countries. Vegetables offer an economical and sustainable opportunity to provide micronutrients. They are rich in minerals, vitamins, and bioactive compounds and thus play a key role in diversifying diets and securing nutritional security. Usually, the availability of most micronutrients in the edible parts of the plants is lower than required. Therefore, scaling up the nutritional profile of vegetable crops through biofortification can enhance their nourishment power. Biofortification can be achieved through mineral fertilization, breeding, and biotechnological approaches. Several crops have been fortified through the soil and foliar application of fertilizers, thus providing benefits for a limited period. To enhance the performance of dimeric acceptors (DMAs) based organic solar cells (OSCs), two new DMAs, designated as DC9‐HD and DYSe‐3, are rationally developed and employed to fabricate ternary OSCs. The substitution of the sulfur atom on the outer ring of the fused‐ring core of DC9‐HD with a selenium atom resultes in the red‐shifted DYSe‐3. Despite these minor differences, DC9‐HD and DYSe‐3 possess nearly identical conjugated skeletons, which contribute to their similar packing motifs and crystallinities, ultimately enabling a high degree of miscibility between two DMAs. Upon incorporating DYSe‐3 into the host PM6:DC9‐HD binary blend, fibril‐like morphologies featured with diameters of ≈16.9 nm and reduced charge recombination are observed in the PM6:DC9‐HD:DYSe‐3 ternary blend. More importantly, owing to their long exciton diffusion lengths and low voltage losses, a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 19.4% is achieved for the ternary OSCs, alongside a delicate balance between open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current density. This super result is comparable to the best performance of oligomer acceptor based OSCs reported to date. Furthermore, the proposed ternary strategy, which combines one polymer donor and two well‐compatible DMAs, not only retains the advantages of DMAs but also offers a streamlined approach for fabricating high‐performance ternary OSCs. The uptake of sodium selenite (Se(IV)) and sodium selenate (Se(VI)) from aqueous medium by Lemna minor L. and the influence of different Se concentrations on its growth, morphological and ultrastructural characteristics were studied. L. minor was grown at different concentrations (1, 3, 5 and 10 mg L−1) of Se(IV) and Se(IV). The Se(IV) concentration in the plant tissue ranged between 77.7 (± 4.3) to 453 (± 0) mg kg−1 DW. The Se(VI) concentration in plant tissues ranged between 117 (± 11) to 417 (± 2) mg kg−1 DW. The highest bioconcentration factor for Se(VI) was 127 (± 7) at 3 mg/L, with a Se removal efficiency of 44%. For Se(IV), the highest bioconcentration factor was 77.7 (± 4.3) at 1 mg L−1, which had a Se removal efficiency of 23%. Growth of L. minor was suppressed at 10 mg L−1 Se in both forms. The addition of Se promoted the formation of starch granules in L. minor which occupied a chloroplast area of 74% for Se(IV) and 77% for Se(VI). The efficient uptake of both Se forms by L. minor indicates the potential application of this species for phytoremediation of Se laden wastewaters and its use as an alternative feedstock in biofuel production. The structural rigidity of tetrakis(4‐pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP) has been utilised to prepare a robust novel porous coordination polymer of composition Cd2(TPyP)(sez)2 (TPyP=5,10,15,20‐tetra(4‐pyridyl)porphyrin, sez=1,2,5‐benzoselenadiazole‐5‐carboxylate). The coordination polymer may be described as a hexagonal porphyrin nanotube (PNT) and has the potential to bind guest molecules through chalcogen bonding. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) data indicate an internal pore diameter ~9 Å which represents ~35 % of the crystal volume. Immersion of the PNTs in solvents such as DMSO and CS2 result in the incorporation of these molecules within the nanotubes with chalcogen bonding between host and guest. The crystallographic guest‐inclusion investigations are complemented by solid‐state 77Se, 13C, 113Cd and 2H NMR studies which provide insights into dynamic behaviour. The porosity of the crystals was further explored using gas adsorption experiments, indicating the reversible uptake of CO2, CH4, H2 and N2. Herein, we report the synthesis of seleno‐substituted chromenes from selenoalkynes and phenols. In this cascade reaction, the applied gold catalyst not only functions as a π‐acid, but also as a Lewis acid, enabling the propargylic substitution in the first step to connect the oxygen carbon bond. Under the optimal reaction condition a total of 26 chromenes were accessible by this modular access. During scale up experiments, the hydrolysis of the vinylselenium substructure to the corresponding chromenones was observed. By revisiting the electron‐rich starting materials, four chromenones were produced following a one‐pot reaction using a single gold catalyst. To better understand the interaction of gold and selenium, a series of nuclear magnetic resonance studies and high‐resolution mass spectrometry studies were performed, which led to the proposal of a mechanism for this transformation. Background: Rhodotorula glutinis, a specific type of yeast, has been recognised as a superior resource for generating selenium-enriched biomass that possesses exceptional nutritional and functional attributes. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of sodium selenite at different concentrations on lipid and carotenoid synthesis, as well as the growth of R. glutinis. Methods: The lipid's fatty acid composition was determined using gas chromatography (GC). The vitamins were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Transmission electron microscopy was used to detect the structural modification of yeast cells caused by the addition of sodium selenite to the growth medium, as well as the accumulation of elemental selenium in the yeast cells. Results: The yeast cells demonstrated the ability to endure high concentrations of sodium selenite under lipid accumulation (LAM) and growth-promoting (YPD) conditions. 25.0 mM and 30.0 mM, respectively, were published as the IC50 values for the LAM and YPD conditions. In both growth media, 1 mM sodium selenite boosted lipid synthesis. Lipid accumulation increased 26% in LAM to 11.4 g/l and 18% in YPD to 4.3 g/l. Adding 1 mM and 3 mM sodium selenite to YPD medium increased total and cellular carotenoids by 22.8% (646.7 µg/L and 32.12 µg/g) and 48.7% (783.3 µg/L and 36.43 µg/g), respectively. Palmitic acid was identified as the most abundant fatty acid in all treatments, followed by oleic acid and linoleic acid. The concentrations of water soluble vitamins (WSV) and fat soluble vitamins (FSV) were generally significantly increased after supplementation with 1.0 mM sodium selenite. TEM examination revealed a significant reduction in lipid bodies accumulation in the yeast cells when sodium selenite was added to lipid-promoting environments. This decline is accompanied by an augmentation in the formation of peroxisomes, indicating that selenium has a direct impact on the degradation of fatty acids. In addition, autophagy appears to be the primary mechanism by which selenium ions are detoxified. Additionally, intracellular organelles disintegrate, cytoplasmic vacuolization occurs, and the cell wall and plasma membrane rupture, resulting in the discharge of cytoplasmic contents, when a high concentration of sodium selenite (20.0 mM) is added. Also, the presence of numerous electron-dense granules suggests an intracellular selenium-detoxification pathway. Conclusion: This study proposes the use of YPD with 1 mM sodium selenite to cultivate selenium-enriched biomass from R. glutinis. This approach leads to heightened lipid levels with higher accumulation of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, carotenoids, and vitamins. Hence, this biomass has the potential to be a valuable additive for animal, fish, and poultry feed. A halide-free and metal-free strategy for the construction of C–S/Se–P(O) bonds through a three-component reaction of allylic alcohols, P(O)H compounds, and elemental sulfur/selenium is reported. This protocol eliminates the requirement for using toxic, odorous and moisture-sensitive starting materials, as well as the need for pre-functionalization of substrates. Moreover, this transformation demonstrates high compatibility with various allylic alcohols and P(O)H compounds at a strict ratio of 1 : 1 : 1. Anthocyanins in maize (Zea mays L.) kernels determine the plant's color and can enhance its resistance. Selenium (Se) significantly impacts plant growth, development, and secondary metabolic regulation. However, the molecular mechanisms by which Se regulates anthocyanin synthesis in waxy corn remain unclear. This study employed integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate the mechanisms through which selenium influences anthocyanin synthesis in yellow and purple waxy corn. The results showed that maize varieties with higher anthocyanin content had higher selenium enrichment capacity in their kernels. Under selenium stress, HN2025 exhibited 1,904 more differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 140 more differential metabolites compared to HN5. The expression levels of anthocyanin synthesis-related genes and transcription factors such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, flavonoid 3-hydroxylase (F3H), dihydroflavonol reductase (DFR), chalcone synthase (CHS), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), anthocyanin 5,3-O-glucosyltransferases, and anthocyanidin reductase, MYB, and bHLH were strongly induced in HN2025. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant enrichment in anthocyanin biosynthesis, flavonoid and flavonol biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, phenylalanine biosynthesis, and phenylalanine metabolism under selenium treatment. Three up-regulated PAL genes and one C4H gene were significantly enriched with DAMs in phenylalanine metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, and anthocyanin biosynthesis, resulting in significant differences between HN5 and HN2025 in selenium-induced anthocyanin metabolism-related pathways. Introduction: Selenium is an essential micronutrient the human body requires, which is closely linked to health. Rice, a primary staple food globally, is a major source of human selenium intake. To develop selenium-enriched rice varieties, it is imperative to understand the mechanisms behind selenium's absorption and transport within rice, alongside identifying the key genes involved in selenium uptake, transport, and transformation within the plant. Methods: This study conducted transcriptome sequencing on four types of rice materials (two with low-selenium and two with high-selenium contents) across roots, stems, leaves, and panicles to analyze the gene expression differences. Results and discussion: Differential gene expression was observed in the various tissues, identifying 5,815, 6,169, 7,609, and 10,223 distinct genes in roots, stems, leaves, and panicles, respectively. To delve into these differentially expressed genes and identify the hub genes linked to selenium contents, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was performed. Ultimately, 10, 8, 7, and 6 hub genes in the roots, stems, leaves, and panicles, respectively, were identified. The identification of these hub genes substantially aids in advancing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in selenium absorption and transport during the growth of rice. Background: Green synthesized nanoparticles have recently gained significant medicinal applications and oftentimes outperform their green sources. Selenium is of fundamental importance to human health, stemming from its distinctive physicochemical properties, such as antioxidant activity, inhibition of Lipid peroxidation, stabilization of membrane proteins, maintenance of membrane fluidity and modulation of cell signaling. Though reports have shown some therapeutic potential of Ackee plant parts such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, very few scientific proofs still exist in support of these effects. Methods: This study synthesized selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) from crude methanolic extracts of Ackee leaves (AKL) and Ackee arils (AKA), examined the photo-physical characteristics of the Se-NPs and determined the in-vitro antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory potentials of AKL, AKA, and their Se-NPs using established protocols. Results: In both leaves and arils Se-NPs: UV spectroscopy revealed a qualitative absorbance at 310 nm; FTIR indicated multiple vibrations around 4000 cm−1- 400 cm−1; SEM images of 5 µm principally showed consistent size distribution of amorphous and granular shape at a magnification of 10,000X; while EDS spectra strongly confirm the presence of atomic Se compound at 30 kV. Various antioxidant activities assays carried out showed a range of approximately 4 to 60 times higher activities of the AKL, AKA, and Se-NPs than Ascorbic acid—the standard drug used. Furthermore, appreciable activities of more than 50% were obtained for alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities, along with highly significant activities of haemoglobin glycosylation, glucose uptake, membrane stabilization, anti-arthritic, anti-haemolysis activities, when AKL, AKA, and Se-NPs were compared with standard drugs. Conclusion: Encouraging the development and utilization of AKL, AKA, and Se-NPs will provide tremendous therapeutic efficacy and bioavailability approaches towards the management of diabetes, inflammation, and other oxidative stress-related diseases. Lithium/sodium–selenium (Li/Na–Se) batteries with high volumetric specific capacity are considered promising as next‐generation battery technologies. However, their practical application is hindered by challenges such as low Se loading in cathodes and the polyselenides shuttle effect. To address these challenges, a new Se host is introduced in the form of a free‐standing N, O co‐doped vertically aligned porous carbon framework decorated with a carbon nanotube forest (VCF‐CNTs), allowing for high mass loading of up to 16 mg cm−2. The low‐tortuosity Se@VCF‐CNTs architecture facilitates rapid lithiation/sodiation kinetics, while the CNT forests in vertical microchannels enhance efficient Se loading and serve as a multi‐layer fence to prevent undesired polyselenide shuttling. Consequently, the Se@VCF‐CNTs cathode displays a significant areal capacity of 10.3 mAh cm−2 at 0.1 C with a Se loading of 16 mg cm−2 for Li–Se batteries, exceeding that of commercial lithium ion batteries (4.0 mAh cm−2). In Na–Se batteries, the Se@VCF‐CNTs electrode with a Se loading of 5 mg cm−2 exhibits a discharge capacity of 436 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles, proving its consistent cycling performance. Nanobiotechnology is a field of science with tremendous promising applications in cancer chemotherapy, targeted drug delivery, molecular diagnosis, and molecular imaging. Selenium, one of the critical trace elements, participates in the structure of selenocysteine protein, which plays an important role in maintaining redox balance due to its oxidoreductase activity. Elemental selenium (Se0) has significantly lower toxicity values than its oxyanions, selenite, and selenate forms. For this reason, it is important to convert elemental selenium into atomic form in biological studies. In particular, their role in regulating the immune system makes selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) superior to others. SeNPs have been discussed effectively in the literature in anticancer activity applications. SeNPs green synthesis is focused on a more economical, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly application by using, reducing, and stabilizing agents in plants. The aim of this review is to highlight the anticancer activity applications of SeNPs synthesized with plant extracts in the last 6 years (i.e., between 2019 and 2024). In addition, it aims to shed light on the green synthesis mechanism of NPs by using plant extracts and to highlight the factors affecting green synthesis and its advantages and disadvantages. Brazil nuts are well known for their extraordinarily high selenium content. For this reason, they are frequently recommended as a kind of natural selenium ‘supplement’, particularly for certain population groups such as vegetarians and vegans in regions with low soil selenium levels. Typically, an intake of one or two Brazil nuts per day is recommended. Brazil nuts, however, also stand out from other nuts in terms of their high (albeit highly variable) radium content. The radium isotopes Ra‐226 and Ra‐228 emit alpha‐ and beta‐radiation, with this type of radiation being particularly harmful when ingested. Consequently, it is important to consider radium levels in Brazil nuts before formulating recommendations for a long‐term, daily intake of these nuts. To date, however, no comprehensive overview of radium levels in Brazil nuts has been published. Therefore, a literature review without time or language restrictions was conducted, including unpublished original data from Germany. The literature review (including the German data) indicated mean Ra‐226 and Ra‐228 levels of 49 (range: 17–205) mBq/g and 67 (range: 12–235) mBq/g, respectively. Assuming a consistent daily intake of one or two Brazil nuts, this would result in an effective dose of ~88–220 μSv/year. This level of exposure appears to be neither clearly harmful nor clearly harmless. As increased radioactivity exposure (at least at higher doses) is associated with increased cancer risk, randomised controlled trials assessing the effect of Brazil nuts on cancer risk biomarkers are needed. Background and Aims The tropical shrub Coelospermum decipiens (Rubiaceae) is an extreme selenium (Se) hyperaccumulator, reported to accumulate up to 1140 µg Se g−1 when found growing on soils with levels of Se below the limit of detection (i.e. <0.01 mg Se kg−1) leading to a bioconcentration factor of >100 000. Methods Coelospermum decipiens plants were sampled from different populations in far north Queensland and analysed for Se concentrations. Plant material was subjected to synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) investigations to gain insights into the elemental distribution and chemical speciation of Se. Results The foliar Se concentrations ranged from 100 to 1000 µg Se g−1, except for the seeds, which had up to 28 000 µg Se g−1. The soils from the Hope Vale area were locally Se-enriched up to 48 mg Se kg−1, but there was no relationship between soil and plant Se concentrations. Synchrotron XFM analysis revealed that Se was localized in the blade margin tissue of the younger leaves, whilst the XAS analysis determined that Se occurs as an organo-Se compound. Conclusions We report the occurrence of seleniferous soils in the Cape York Peninsula soils for the first time, which may partly explain the evolution of Se hyperaccumulation in C. decipiens. The extremely high concentrations of Se in the seeds is suggestive of a herbivory protection function. The capacity of this species to accumulate and hyperaccumulate Se from non-seleniferous soils is akin to that of other 'seed'-based accumulators, such as some members of the Lecythidaceae family. Given the increasing awareness of the negative effects of fatigue on daily activities, mental health, and quality of life, antifatigue supplements are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. Selenium has been found to have antifatigue potential in high dosage, but may cause toxicity effects to the body. In this study, inorganic selenium was first converted to nanoselenium particles via in situ synthesis by Lactobacillus rhamnosus SHA113 (Se‐LRS), and then loaded by Ganoderma lucidum spores (GLS). The resulting products were not only assessed for their antioxidant activities, but also the antifatigue potential in mice. As a result, both Se‐LRS and the Se‐LRS/GLS complex exhibited higher antioxidant and antibacterial activities in simulated gastrointestinal fluids compared to isolated selenium nanoparticles. The Se‐LRS/GLS complex demonstrated sustained release of selenium in simulated gastrointestinal fluids and showed significant alleviation of exercise‐induced fatigue indicators, but relatively lower liver selenium accumulation in the mice, surpassing the effects of isolated nanoselenium. No toxicity was found to Caco‐2 cells for Se‐LRS/GLS complex at 2 µg/mL. This is a novel approach to enhance the antifatigue potential of selenium without causing extra toxicity. Excess oxidative stress and inadequate antioxidant capacities are critical features in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. This study aimed to determine whether supplementation with glutathione (GSH) and/or selenium (Se), as antioxidants, attenuates diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in mice. C57BL/6J male mice were randomly assigned to control, DEN, DEN + GSH, DEN + Se, and DEN + GSH + Se groups for 20 weeks. Daily supplementation with GSH and/or Se commenced in the first experimental week and continued throughout the study. DEN was administered in weeks 2–9 and 16–19 of the experimental period. DEN administration induced significant pathological alterations of hepatic foci, evidenced by elevated levels of liver function, accompanied by high malondialdehyde (MDA) levels; low GSH levels; and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities. Supplementation with GSH and Se significantly ameliorated liver pathological changes, reducing liver function and MDA levels while increasing GSH levels and GPx, GR, and GST activities. Notably, combined supplementation with GSH and Se more effectively increased the GSH/glutathione disulfide ratio and GPx activity than individual supplementation. Selenium (Se) is considered to be an essential trace element needed for all living organisms. The importance, deficiency, and toxic effects of Se mainly depend on its quantity and chemical nature. It has been observed that the inorganic versions of Se are more hazardous than the organic versions. This review is mainly focused on the application of different extraction methods used for Se extraction and determination such as microextraction, solid-phase extraction (SPE), and their modified modes in the last 12 years. The use of different dispersive medium (magnetic field, ultrasonic radiation, and vortex agitator) to enhance Se separation is also part of this review. The usage of environmentally friendly solvents such as supramolecular solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and ionic liquids (ILs) are also the focus of attention in this review. This review is also emphasized the application of advanced microextraction methods, particularly liquid-phase microextraction (LPME). The most recent advances in LPME extraction techniques for Se in various environmental samples, as well as their prospects, are reviewed. ABSTRACT Previously published recommendations for vegetarian (including vegan) diets for children have highlighted the need for vitamin B12 supplementation. Increased attention to several other key nutrients (including iodine, vitamin D, calcium, and iron) has also been recommended. However, an overview focusing on supplementation guidelines, specifically for vegan infants, has not been published, and a potential requirement for iodine and/or selenium supplementation in (some) vegan infants has not been discussed. Vegan complementary feeding should be supplemented (particularly with 5 μg/day of vitamin B12 and 10 μg/day of vitamin D). Iodine should be supplemented (up to 110 μg/day) if the intake of breast milk and infant formula is low, and selenium supplementation (5 μg/day) should be considered in regions with low soil selenium levels. Caution is required to avoid excessive intakes of iodine and particularly selenium. Supplements for vegan infants are on the market, and observational studies are urgently needed to assess the nutrient intake (including supplements) and status in vegan infants. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of organic and inorganic selenium mixes in pregnant sows on piglet growth, selenium levels in serum and milk, and selenium deposition in newborn piglet tissues. Methods: A total of 44 multiparous sows (YorkshirexLandrace) with average body weight (BW), backfat thickness, and parity were assigned to one of the three treatments with 14 or 15 sows per treatment in a completely randomized design. The treatments were as follows: i) Control, corn-soybean meal-based diet with no addition of selenium premix; ii) ISOS (mixed inorganic selenium and organic selenium) 30, a basal diet supplemented with 0.15 ppm of inorganic Se and 0.15 ppm of organic Se; iii) ISOS50, a basal diet supplemented with 0.25 ppm of inorganic Se and 0.25 ppm of organic Se. Results: At day 21 of lactation, supplementing a high level of mixed Se at 0.50 ppm resulted in higher piglet BW and weight gain than adding a low level of mixed Se at 0.30 ppm (p<0.05). Selenium concentration of colostrum in sows fed ISOS50 diet was significantly higher than those in sows fed ISOS30 diet (p<0.05). Selenium concentrations in the serum at days 90 and 110 of gestation and 24 hours postpartum were highest when sows were fed ISOS50 diet (p<0.05). Additionally, increasing levels of mixed Se led to an increase in piglet serum Se concentration at 24 hours postpartum (p<0.05). Before ingesting colostrum, piglets from sows fed a mixed selenium (Se) diet had significantly higher kidney Se concentrations compared to those from the control group, with the ISOS50 treatment showing the most significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Supplementation of the gestation diet with 0.5 ppm of mixed Se may improve piglet growth performance, increase Se concentrations in milk, and enhance Se status in the serum of sows, as well as in the serum and tissues of their offspring. Selenium in its organic form (such as selenoproteins) is involved in human metabolism, acting as an antioxidant and reducing inflammatory biomarkers associated with overweight and obesity. Nevertheless, their functionality depends on the selenium intake and individuals' physiological status. The adequate intake of this nutrient has been revised for health experts, and slight adjustments to the Daily Intake Reference Values occurred to avoid toxicity or deficiency and to exert beneficial effects in specific biomarkers such as glutathione peroxidase activity and SELENOP concentration. However, there is a gap in understanding the metabolic effects of selenocompounds in subjects or experimental models with obesity, but promising results have been documented to be included as a coadjutant in this disease treatment. In this sense, many strategies have been developed worldwide to produce Se-enriched foods and supplements containing selenocompounds to increase the accessibility for consumers. In this review, the effects of Se and selenocompounds on the central overweight and obesity biomarkers in different experimental models are addressed. Likewise, the most recent strategies for selenium enrichment in agricultural products and the main trends in selenium-enriched foods and supplements on the global market are discussed. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP) is a transporter for selenium and has been shown to protect selenium-status maintenance in the brain against deficiency and to support neuronal development, neurogenesis and neurocognitive function. Selenium deficiency has previously been associated with cognitive impairment in various populations, but no studies have been carried out in subjects with heart failure (HF). To explore whether SELENOP deficiency in subjects with acute HF is associated with cognitive impairment. Plasma SELENOP, as measured by an immunoassay analysis, is a well-validated marker of plasma selenium status and has the benefit of providing information on the bioavailable fraction of selenium to preferentially supplied cells equipped with receptors for SELENOP uptake. SELENOP was measured in 320 subjects hospitalized for HF. Of the subjects, 187 also underwent 4 cognitive tests assessing global cognitive function: Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA); information processing (Symbol Digit Modalities Test [SDMT]); visual attention and task switching (Trailmaking Test A [TMT-A]); and executive speed (A Quick Test of Cognitive Speed [AQT] form and color). Appropriate cutoffs were used for each cognitive test to define cognitive impairment. Cross-sectional associations between SELENOP concentrations and cognitive impairment, as defined by each cognitive test, were explored using multivariable logistic models. Further, multivariable logistic models exploring associations between selenium deficiency, defined as the lowest quartile of SELENOP levels, and cognitive impairment, defined by each cognitive test, were carried out. The 187 participants had a mean age of 73 (± 11.9) years; 31% were female and had a mean body mass index of 28.1 (± 5.6) kg/m2. Each 1 standard deviation increment in SELENOP concentrations was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment, defined as a MoCA cut-off score < 23 (odds ratio [OR] 0.60; 95% CI 0.40–0.91; P = 0.017). Further, SELENOP concentrations in the lowest quartile (≤ 2.3 mg/L) were associated with cognitive impairment as measured by MoCA (OR 3.10; 95% CI 1.38–6.97; P = 0.006), SDMT (OR 2.26; 95% CI 1.10–4.67; P = 0.027) and TMT-A (OR 3.40; 95% CI 1.47–7.88; P = 0.004) but not by AQT form and color. Background/Objectives: The impact of daily variations in habitual maternal intake on human milk (HM) composition has been poorly studied. We aimed to investigate the associations between day-to-day fluctuation in the micronutrient concentration in HM and daily maternal diet. Methods: To this end, an observational longitudinal study was carried out. A total of 143 lactating women each compiled a five-day weighed dietary record and concomitantly expressed milk for four successive days. Maternal daily intakes of micronutrients and food groups were analyzed. Free thiamine, free riboflavin, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxal, folic acid, cobalamin, ascorbic and dehydroascorbic acids, retinol, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol, cholecalciferol, and calcidiol in HM were determined for each of the four investigated days. A longitudinal data analysis with generalized estimating equation models was performed. Results: For each daily serving of meat, fish, and eggs, total vitamin D3 levels increased by 243.2 pg/mL (p = 0.027) and selenium levels increased by 0.16 ppb (p = 0.031) in HM. For every 1 mg/day of riboflavin supplementation, free riboflavin levels in HM increased by 28.6 mcg/L (p = 0.019). Pyridoxal levels in HM increased by 6.3 mcg/L per 1 mg/day of vitamin B6 supplementation (p = 0.001), and by 2 mcg/L per daily fruit ration (p = 0.016). Conclusions: In conclusion, we were able to quantify the impact of the usual day-to-day variations in the diet and in the intake of commonly used supplements on the fluctuation of vitamin D, free riboflavin, pyridoxal, and selenium concentration in the milk of lactating women. Background: Selenium (Se), Manganese (Mn), and Chromium (Cr) are dietary minerals ingested from specific grains, vegetables, and animal meats. Prior research showed that these minerals affect animal erythrocyte health but have unknown effects on human red blood cells (RBCs) and hematology. This study evaluated the effects of these dietary minerals on RBC count, hematocrit, and hemoglobin. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 23,844 American participants from the 2015–2016 and 2017–2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We evaluated sex, age, ethnicity, education, income, and smoking status as covariates. Linear regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the effect of Cr, Se, and Mn on RBC count, hematocrit, and hemoglobin levels. We employed subpopulation-exclusion regressions further to explore the distinct effects of mineral elevation and deficiency. Additional analyses were performed to examine the relationship between Mn and RBC hemoglobin, RBC distribution width, transferrin receptor concentrations, transferrin saturation, and serum iron levels to support the interpretation of our findings. Optimizable ensemble machine learning models were used to corroborate regression results. Results: Adjusting for covariates, Cr was inversely associated with RBC count (Exp(b) = 0.954), hemoglobin (Exp(b) = 0.868), and hematocrit (Exp(b) = 0.668). Conversely, Se was positively associated with RBC count (Exp(b) = 1.003), hemoglobin (Exp(b) = 1.012), and hematocrit (Exp(b) = 1.032). Mn was positively associated with RBC count (Exp(b) = 1.020) but inversely associated with hemoglobin (Exp(b) = 0.945) and hematocrit (Exp(b) = 0.891). Conclusions: Cr was harmful to RBC health in all subpopulations, whereas Se was protective. Mn appears to contribute to the development of microcytic anemia, but only in subjects with clinically elevated Mn levels. Dietary intervention is a subject of growing interest in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as new incident cases across the globe are rapidly rising, suggesting environmental factors as contributing elements. Dietary components and micronutrients have been associated with IBD pathogenesis or reductions in disease severity. Selenium, a diet-derived essential micronutrient that is important for proper immune system function, has received limited attention in the context of IBD. Selenium deficiency is a common finding in patients with IBD, but few clinical trials have been published to address the consequences of this deficiency. Here, we review the physiological and immunological roles of selenium and its putative role in IBD, and draw attention to knowledge gaps and unresolved issues, with the goal of stimulating more research on selenium in IBD. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the concentration of heavy metals in drinking water and the number of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) cases in two regions of Poland. The number of births in 2015-16 in Pomeranian Voivodeship was 50,461, while the number of new T1DM cases was 219. In Lublin Voivodeship, the number of births in the same period reached 39,381, and the number of new T1DM cases was 221. The incidence of T1DM, calculated per 100 live births, amounted to 0.43 and 0.56 in Pomeranian and Lublin. The statistical analysis of collected data proved that the number of new T1DM cases in Pomeranian Voivodeship is correlated to the concentrations of selenium (Se; p < 0.0001), lead (Pb; p < 0.00001), cadmium (Cd; p < 0.00001), zinc (Zn; p < 0.00001) and arsenic (As; p = 0.00001). In the case of Lublin Voivodeship, the number of new T1DM cases was correlated to the concentrations of Se (p = 0.0000001), Pb (p < 0.000001), Cd (p = 0.0000001) and Zn (p < 0.00001) in drinking water. No correlation was found between the number of new T1DM cases and arsenic concentration in the drinking water samples from Lublin Voivodeship. The results indicated that environmental exposure to specific heavy metals may contribute to the risk of T1DM, underscoring the need for stringent environmental controls and public health policies to mitigate these risks. Fagopyrum dibotrys is a herbal plant. Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element for plants; selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are gaining importance in food and agriculture due to their low toxicity and high activity. This study revealed that foliar application of SeNPs enhanced superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and peroxisome activities and significantly enhanced the flavonoid compound content in F. dibotrys. SeNPs with a concentration of 5.0 mg L−1 also promoted the growth of F. dibotrys. The foliar application of SeNPs could be absorbed by pores in leaves of F. dibotrys and mainly transformed to selenomethionine (32.5–43.2%) and selenocysteine (23.4–38.4%) in leaves and tubers of F. dibotrys. Consequently, this study offers a profound understanding of plants' uptake and biotransformation of SeNPs. Introduction: Marmots are recognized as host animals for plague caused by Yersinia pestis infection. It is unclear that why plague prevalent in marmot rather than other rodents like pikas in the same habitats. This study aims to analyze the differences of the soil characteristics around marmots and pikas burrows to explore the soils factors impacting on different epidemic intensities of Yersinia pestis in these two rodents. Methods: Soil samples were collected from within and around marmot and pika burrows, as well as from the nearby areas not inhabited by them and Chinese baseline soil properties as control groups, in the Qilian Mountains of Gansu Province, China. The physicochemical properties and the bacterial 16S rRNA were measured to analyze the characteristics of soils from different groups. Subsequently, the data were analyzed using R studio. Results: The analysis revealed that marmot habitats exhibited distinct soil characteristics, including lower organic matter and alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen, but higher electrical conductivity and total soluble salts. And soil in marmot areas tended to have higher concentrations of nickel, chromium, and iron, also lower levels of zinc and selenium. Additionally, the alpha diversity of soil microorganisms in marmot habitats was significantly low. Simultaneously, redundancy analysis was conducted, which showed that the low alpha diversity of marmot-soil was influenced by its physicochemical properties. The alpha diversity of the soil was positively correlated with EC, TSS, Na, and Cr, etc., while it was negatively correlated with AHN, OM, Se, Zn, and Fe, etc. Conclusion: These characteristics in marmot habitats, including low levels of organic matter, alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen, zinc, selenium, and bacterial alpha diversity, as well as high levels of electrical conductivity, total soluble salts, iron, and nickel, played a crucial role in the spread of plague. It was discovered that the unique characteristics ofmarmot-soils provided essential elements necessary for the survival of Yersinia pestis, including high levels of Fe and Ca, or facilitated the spread of plague. The study investigated selenium’s (Se) efficiency in preserving South African Zulu rams’ sperm quality and testicular parameters when they were exposed to heat stress. Indigenous Zulu rams (20) between 2 and 5 years old were allocated into four groups, namely the Se, testicular heat stress (THS), selenium plus testicular heat stress (SeTHS), and control. Each group comprised five rams; the groups were balanced according to the rams’ body weight and scrotal circumference. The Se and SeTHS groups received sodium selenite orally bi-weekly for 5 months. To induce heat stress, testicular heat insulation bags were wrapped around the testes of the rams receiving the THS and SeTHS treatments for 49 days. Semen was collected from the rams weekly from the third month onward; the first two months were for Se & THS acclimatization. In addition, testicular measurements were taken bi-weekly. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the sperm quality data. Duncan’s multiple range test was used to compare the groups’ data for significant differences. The results showed that the Se-supplemented rams’ scrotal circumference was smaller (p < 0.05) compared with the other groups. The Se, SeTHS, and control groups demonstrated similar total sperm motility; in contrast, the THS and SeTHS groups recorded low and high total sperm motility, respectively, compared with other treatment groups (p < 0.05). The semen from the rams that received THS without Se displayed a significantly higher number of immotile sperm cells (p < 0.05) and poor sperm quality, including total and progressive motility, and kinematic parameters when compared with other treatments, suggesting that Se protects sperm against THS. We concluded that selenium protected some sperm parameters (TSM, PSM, MV, VCL, VSL) of THS- treated rams while others did not improve (RV, NSM, C, STR). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to formulate a Selenium (Se)-bioenriched fermented beverage using selenized lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with desirable sensory attributes and shelf-life. The fruit-origin strains Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum CRL 2051 and Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL 2034 were grown in MRS-fructose with 5 mg/L Se before inoculation. Then, the selenized strains were inoculated separately or together in a fruit juice and cowmilk beverage and allowed to ferment at 30 °C for 14 h. During microbial growth, the strains accumulated 62.8–93.5 µg/L of total Se, with 32.7–47.8 µg/L composed of the amino acids selenocysteine (SeCys), and 6.1–12.7 µg/L of selenomethionine (SeMet). The beverages fermented by L. paraplantarum CRL 2051 alone and by the mixed culture showed the highest levels of general acceptance and best sensory attributes. The latter fermented beverage exhibited high microbial resistance to cold storage after 52 days and to gastrointestinal tract conditions as well as an acceptable sensory shelf-life of 42 days. For the first time, microbial selenization previous to food fermentation successfully allowed Se fortification and the formulation of a functional Se-enriched beverage with desirable sensory properties and shelf-life. Cardiovascular diseases are a rampant public health threat. Environmental contaminants, such as Cadmium (Cd), a toxic metal, are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Given that human exposure to Cd is increasing, there is a need for therapies to ameliorate Cd toxicity. Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, has been proposed to rescue the effects of Cd toxicity, with mixed effects. Se's narrow therapeutic window necessitates precise dosing to avoid toxicity. Here, we assessed the effects of various waterborne Cd and Se concentrations and sequences on cardiac function using zebrafish (Danio rerio). We showed that Cd induced pericardial edemas and modified heart rates in zebrafish larvae in a concentration-dependent manner. To identify the therapeutic range of Se for Cd-induced cardiotoxicity, zebrafish embryos were treated with 0, 10, 50, 100, 150, or 200 μg/L Se for 1–4 days prior to exposure to 2.5 and 5 μg/L Cd. We found that a 50 µg/L Se pre-treatment before 2.5 μg/L Cd, but not 5 μg/L Cd, reduced the prevalence of pericardial edemas and ameliorated Cd-induced bradycardia in zebrafish. Zebrafish exposed to 10 and 50 μg/L of Se for up to 4 days showed typical heart morphology, whereas other Se-exposed and control fish presented pericardial edemas. Longer Se pre-treatment durations led to fewer incidences of pericardial edemas. Overall, this study highlights the importance of optimizing Se concentrations and pre-treatment periods to harness its protective effects against Cd-induced cardiotoxicity. Illicit drug use has become a global issue, posing significant health, socioeconomic, and cultural risks. The study examined essential trace metals: selenium, zinc, and copper in blood concentrations, as well as in serum and scalp hair samples, from 240 male drug-abuse subjects/patients aged 18–45, categorized into three age groups. The study compared 45 healthy subjects of the same age group using an acid digestion method supported by a microwave oven during sample preparation. The technique of atomic absorption spectrometry was employed to identify essential and toxic elements, utilizing certified reference materials for accuracy. According to a recent study, plasma zinc and selenium concentrations in drug abusers are lower than those in referent subjects, potentially increasing vulnerability to infection due to poor nutritional status or other contaminants. Farmed mussels accumulate contaminants from their production environment rather than releasing them into water. This study reveals potential health risks associated with selenium, cadmium, mercury, and lead resulting from the consumption of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) cultured along the coasts of Türkiye and Bulgaria. The concentrations of Se and toxic trace metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The detection limits (LOD) were 0.100, 0.015, 0.025, and 0.180 µg/kg for Se, Cd, Hg, and Pb, respectively. The mean Se concentrations were between 1.305 and 1.957 µg/g, and toxic metals were below the maximum limits. Due to Turkish and Bulgarian consumers' limited mollusk consumption, mussels could only provide a maximum of 7.35% of the daily Se need. THQ and TTHQ of Se, Cd, and methyl-Hg were below 1, indicating that farmed mussels were safe for consumption. Percent PTWI values were calculated only for Cd and MeHg, as the PTWI value for Pb was discarded by the authorities and not determined for Se. Accordingly, weekly mussel consumption did not pose any risks. The margin of exposure approach was used to evaluate Pb intake. MOE-SBP and MOE-NE were significantly higher than 10, designating no significant health risks. Long-term consumption of mussels also does not pose a carcinogenic risk regarding the TR index calculated between 10−5 and 10−6 for Pb. Positive HBVSe (10.13–37.27) indicated that Se in mussels overcame Hg-related potential health concerns. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been a subject of intense debate due to its association with cardiovascular risks. This study investigates the potential protective effects of selenium (Se) supplementation against cardiac damage induced by HFCS. Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were divided into four equal groups: control, CS (20%-HFCS), CS with Se (20%-HFCS, 0.3 mg/kg-Se), and Se (0.3 mg/kg-Se) only. After a 6-week period, heart and aorta tissues were collected for histopathological, immunohistochemical, biochemical, and genetic analyses. HFCS consumption led to severe cardiac pathologies, increased oxidative stress, and altered gene expressions associated with inflammation, apoptosis, and antioxidant defenses. In the CS group, pronounced oxidative stress within the cardiac tissue was concomitant with elevated Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) expression and diminished expressions of B-cell-lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC1-α), and silenced information regulator 1 (SIRT1). Se supplementation mitigated these effects, showing protective properties. Immunohistochemical analysis supported these findings, demonstrating decreased expressions of caspase-3, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), IL-1β, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the CS + Se group compared to the CS group. A certain amount of selenium (Se) is usually added to the diet of laying hens to improve the quality and nutritional value of eggs. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of selenium-rich black soldier fly (BSF) supplementation in diets on laying production performance, egg quality, serum indexes, and egg selenium content of Hy-line variety brown laying hens. A total of 288 at 49-week-old healthy laying hens were divided into 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates per group and 16 hens per replicate using a single-factor completely randomized design. Treatments consisted of (1) control (basal diet without supplemental Se), (2) 0.30 mg/kg supplemental Se, (Se as sodium selenite, SS), and (3) 0.30 mg/kg supplemental Se (Se as selenium-rich black soldier fly, SE-BSF). Laying performance was not affected by dietary Se. There was no effect of selenium-rich BSF on egg quality (P > 0.05). The contents of malonaldehyde (MDA) were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). On the contrary, dietary Se supplementation increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, P < 0.05) and catalase (CAT, P < 0.05) and increased the concentration of reduced glutathione (P < 0.05). In addition, selenium-rich BSF supplementation significantly increased the Se content of eggs (P < 0.05). These results indicate that Se supplementation did not affect laying production performance and egg quality of laying hens, but the supplementation could improve antioxidant capacity and increased the Se content of eggs. One set of chronic gastrointestinal disorders called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is defined by persistent, non-specific inflammation. Abdominal pain, hematochezia, diarrhea, and other symptoms are among its clinical signs. Currently, managing and treating IBD remains a significant challenge. Patients with IBD frequently have deficits in trace elements. Selenium (Se) is one of the necessary trace elements for normal organismal function. It has several regulatory effects, including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and defensive properties, via inducing the synthesis of selenoproteins. Patients with IBD have been shown to have lower Se levels in epidemiologic research studies. Several experimental models of IBD suggest that Se or selenoproteins play a key role in microinflammation. The long-term use of tripterygium glycosides (TG) can lead to male reproductive damage. Research indicates that zinc and selenium exhibit a synergistic effect in the male reproductive system, with the combined preparation demonstrating superior therapeutic effects compared to individual preparations. The purpose of this study was to explore the specific mechanism by which zinc and selenium mitigate reproductive toxicity induced by TG in male rats. Rats were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (C group), model group (M group, receiving TG at 30 mg/kg/day), and model + zinc + selenium group (ZS group). The ZS group was also given TG gavage for the first 4 weeks. Starting from the fifth week until the conclusion of the eighth week, the ZS group received an additional protective treatment of 10 mg/kg/day Zn and 0.1 mg/kg/day Se 4 h after TG administration. Following euthanasia, blood samples, rat testis, and epididymis tissues were collected for further experiments. Combined zinc-selenium treatment corrects the imbalance of zinc-selenium homeostasis in testicular tissue induced by TG. This is achieved by upregulating the expression of metal transcription factor (MTF1) and zinc transporters ZIP8 and ZIP14 and downregulating the expression of ZnT10. Improvement of zinc and selenium homeostasis enhanced the expression of zinc-containing enzymes (ADH, LDH, and ALP) and selenoproteins (GPx1 and SELENOP) in the testis. At the same time, zinc and selenium mitigate TG-induced reproductive damage by promoting the activity of antioxidant enzymes and upregulating the expression of proteins associated with the oxidative stress pathway, including Nrf2, Keap1, HO-1, PI3K, and p-AKT. Rice is susceptible to cadmium (Cd) accumulation, which poses a threat to human health. Traditional methods for mitigating moderately contaminated soils can be impractical or prohibitively expensive, necessitating innovative approaches to reduce Cd uptake in rice. Nutrient management has emerged as a promising solution by leveraging the antagonistic interactions between nutrients and cadmium. However, the research on the synergistic effects of multiple nutrients on Cd toxicity in rice is limited. To address this limitation, pot experiments was utilized to investigate the combined effects of selenium (Se), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) denoted as (SeCM) on Cd uptake and translocation in rice. The synergistic application of SeCM reduced grain Cd levels by 55.0%, surpassing the individual effects of Se (42.1%) and CM (40.5%), and bringing Cd content below the safe consumption limits. SeCM treatment exhibited multiple beneficial effects: it decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, enhanced catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and glutathione (GSH) enzyme activities, limited Cd translocation from roots to shoots, promoted iron plaque formation, and reduced Cd transfer from soil to iron plaque and subsequently to rice grains. Correlation analysis revealed strong negative relationships between rice Cd content, Cd translocation factors, and the translocation factors of selenium, calcium, and magnesium. These findings suggest that selenium, calcium, and magnesium collaboratively mitigate Cd toxicity through antagonistic and competitive interactions. These nutrients enhance the uptake of beneficial elements, while competitively inhibiting the translocation and accumulation of Cd in rice plants. Context Iodine is necessary for proper brain development. The prevalence of iodine deficiency in Portuguese pregnant women led the health authorities, in 2013, to recommend iodine supplementation for women in preconception, throughout pregnancy, and during lactation. Objective This work aimed to assess the effect of iodine supplementation initiated in the preconception or the first trimester of pregnancy on the prevalence of iodine deficiency and maternal thyroid status. Methods An observational prospective cohort study was conducted that followed the thyroid function and iodine status of women recruited during preconception or in the first trimester of pregnancy. Results Median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was significantly higher among women taking iodine supplements (no-supplement group UIC = 63 µg/L; supplement group UIC = 100 µg/L; P =.002) but still below the levels recommended by the World Health Organization. Only 15% of pregnant women had adequate iodine status and 17% showed a UIC of less than 50 µg/L. There was no influence whether iodine supplementation was started during preconception or during the first trimester of gestation (UIC preconception group: 112 µg/L vs UIC pregnancy group: 91 µg/L; P =.569). In the first trimester of pregnancy, total thyroxine levels were lower and free triiodothyronine levels were higher in nonsupplemented women. Thyroglobulin levels were lower in women who started iodine supplementation during preconception compared to nonsupplemented women and women who started iodine supplementation during gestation. Conclusion In the Minho region of Portugal, fertile women have insufficient iodine intake. Introduction: The process of forming selenium nanoparticles with various shapes and structures through laser ablation and fragmentation in various solvents has been explored. Methods: Laser ablation and laser fragmentation techniques were employed using nanosecond Nd:YAG second harmonic laser irradiation in 9 different working fluids, including water. The characteristics of the resulting nanoparticles were assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. Results: Laser ablation and subsequent laser fragmentation of some organic solvents, such as ethanol, propanol-2, isobutanol, polyethylene glycol, and diethanolamine, have been found to produce trigonal selenium in the form of elongated nanorods approximately 1 μm long and 200 nm thick, with a well-defined crystal structure. In contrast, the use of deionized water, acetone, glycerol, and benzene as solvents results in the formation of spherical amorphous nanoparticles approximately 100 nm in diameter. Discussion: The polarity of the solvent molecules has been shown to influence the growth of crystalline selenium nanorods in solution during laser ablation and laser fragmentation. Generally, polar solvents hinder the growth of crystalline nanorods, due to interactions between selenium and solvent molecules. Nonpolar solvents, on the other hand, allow for laser fragmentation to reduce particle size and initiate the epitaxial growth of elongated, crystalline selenium nanorods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZTs) pose significant health risks and economic challenges worldwide. This study investigated the prevalence of encysted metacercariae (EMCs) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from two Egyptian governorates and evaluated the antiparasitic efficacy of chitosan, silver, and selenium nanoparticles against these parasites. A cross-sectional analysis of 453 O. niloticus specimens revealed an overall EMC prevalence of 40.8%, with infection rates of 34.11% in Giza and 49.5% in Dakahlia. Clinostomid and Prohemistomid metacercariae were the most common, with mixed infections observed. Transmission electron microscopy characterized the synthesized nanoparticles, showing average diameters of 9.6–18.7 nm for chitosan, 13.2–19.8 nm for selenium, and 11.7–15.1 nm for silver nanoparticles. In vitro antiparasitic assays demonstrated varying efficacies among the nanoparticles. Against Clinostomum spp. metacercariae, chitosan nanoparticles showed the highest potency, achieving LC50 at 66 μg/ml after 30 min and LC90 at 100 μg/ml after 120 min. For Prohemistomum vivax EMCs, chitosan nanoparticles exhibited superior efficacy, achieving LC50 at 8 μg/ml after 1 h and LC90 at 16 μg/ml after 2 h. Silver and selenium nanoparticles showed lower efficacy for both parasite species. Scanning electron microscopy revealed significant ultrastructural damage to the parasite tegument following nanoparticle exposure, including disappearance of transverse ridges, integument shrinkage, and formation of blebs. This study provided valuable insights into the prevalence of FBZTs in Egyptian Nile tilapia and demonstrated the potential of nanoparticles, particularly chitosan, as effective antiparasitic agents. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a growing global health concern. While micronutrients are crucial for physiological functions and metabolic balance, their precise links to T2D are not fully understood. Methods: We investigated the causal relationships between 15 key micronutrients and T2D risk using both univariate and multivariate Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. Our analysis leveraged data from a large prospective cohort genome-wide association study (GWAS) on these micronutrients and T2D. We employed MR techniques such as inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median, and simple models. Multivariate analysis adjusted for diabetes-related factors like body mass index (BMI) and hypertension to assess the independent effects of micronutrients, particularly selenium, on T2D risk. Results: Selenium intake was associated with an increased risk of T2D, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.045, a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from 1.009 to 1.082, and a P-value of 0.015. This association was consistent in multivariate analyses, suggesting an independent effect of selenium on T2D risk after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: Our study presents novel evidence of a positive correlation between selenium intake and T2D risk, underscoring the importance of micronutrients in diabetes prevention and treatment strategies. Photodetectors are now indispensable in our daily lives, and there is a pressing need to explore new materials and mechanisms that can push the boundaries of device performance. Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors have emerged recently as a promising material platform with exceptional optoelectronic properties, making them particularly suitable for high-performance photodetectors. However, photoinduced carrier generation in conventional 2D vdW photodetectors are usually limited, and new mechanisms need to be introduced to enhance device performance. Herein, we report a high-performance avalanche photodetector based on selenium (Se) nanoflakes. Our device achieves a high photoresponsivity (R) and specific detectivity (D*) of 361 A·W−1 and 2.4 × 1012 Jones, respectively. These figures of merit are two orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional Se photoconductive photodetectors. As a large bandgap vdW semiconductor, the Se channel allows the application of an extremely large bias voltage across it, and the resulting high electric field leads to the avalanche multiplication of carriers, which lays the groundwork for the improved device performance. MnO2 is commonly used as the cathode material for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs). The strong Coulombic interaction between Zn ions and the MnO2 lattice causes significant lattice distortion and, combined with the Jahn–Teller effect, results in Mn2+ dissolution and structural collapse. While proton intercalation can reduce lattice distortion, it changes the electrolyte pH, producing chemically inert byproducts. These issues greatly affect the reversibility of Zn2+ intercalation/extraction, leading to significant capacity degradation of MnO2. Herein, we propose a novel method to enhance the cycling stability of δ‐MnO2 through selenium doping (Se−MnO2). Our work indicates that varying the selenium doping content can regulate the intercalation ratio of H+ in MnO2, thereby suppressing the formation of ZnMn2O4 by‐products. Se doping mitigates the lattice strain of MnO2 during Zn2+ intercalation/deintercalation by reducing Mn−O octahedral distortion, modifying Mn−O bond length upon Zn2+ insertion, and alleviating Mn dissolution caused by the Jahn–Teller effect. The optimized Se−MnO2 (Se concentration of 0.8 at.%) deposited on carbon nanotube demonstrates a notable capacity of 386 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, with exceptional long‐term cycle stability, retaining 102 mAh g−1 capacity after 5000 cycles at 3.0 A g−1. In this study, we expand the computational investigation of selenium, which has previously been limited to metals such as Cu, Fe, Pd, Au, and Pt. Utilizing density functional theory calculations, we explore the adsorption and diffusion of selenium at a low‐coverage regime of 0.25 ML on a broader range of metal surfaces, including Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au. Our results reveal that selenium exhibits a distinct preference for three‐fold or four‐fold high‐coordination sites on most studied surfaces. We further analyze the minimum energy diffusion pathways, demonstrating that the energy barrier for selenium's surface diffusion varies significantly based on the orientation and nature of the metal surfaces. Specifically, on (100) surfaces, selenium exhibits the highest diffusion energy, ranging from 0.60 eV in Au(100) to 1.12 eV in Pd(100). The diffusion behavior on (110) and (211) surfaces is also elaborated, emphasizing the unique trends observed compared to previously studied elements like sulfur. Importantly, this study is a new reference for future computational analyses, filling existing gaps by providing comprehensive data on selenium adsorption on various face‐centered cubic metal surfaces not previously reported.
