Antifungal efficacy of three biopesticides namely Chirane, Lirane and Ocirane, formulated respectively from essentials oils of Cymbopogon schoenanthus, Lippia multifliora and Ocimum americanum, was tested on cowpea seedborne fungi. Blotting paper (ISTA, 1999) and Mathur and Kongsdal (2003) methods has been used respectively for seeds health analysis and effect of biopesticides on emergence of young plants and their development. Two doses of 5g/kg and 10g/kg were applied for each formulation, in the presence of a benchmark fungicide and an untreated control. Chirane reduced contamination by C. dematium and Fusarium spp. (25% and 4% respectively against 52 and 13% for the witnesses), Lirane led to a significant decrease in M. phaseolina infection (0% against 6%) and Ocirane, decreased contamination of Cladosporium sp., C. dematium, M. phaseolina and Fusarium spp. (7%, 29%, 0.5% and 1.5% respectively, against 57.5%, 40, 10 and 6.5% for the control). Good seed quality can be obtained through control of the entire seed production process. There are emerging issues in the seed sector due to seed quality in market. In many countries seed and planting materials available to farmers are often of insufficient quality, thus undermining the potential performance of crops. The objective this study was to use morpho-anatomical traits to determine the levels of maize hybrid seed purity on the market in Uganda. A total of 120 samples of four popular commercial maize hybrid were collected from agro-dealers in 13 districts, representing 3 seed companies’ distribution network. The samples were planted and evaluated based on their descriptors, using an Alpha Lattice Design, with two replications at the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), Namulonge. Data were collected for 33 morpho-anatomical traits. Results showed significant (P<0.05) differences within hybrids, and sources of seed among districts. Among the test materials, only Longe 9H had no significant (P<0.05) difference within traits but others had some levels of significant (P<0.05) differences. The principal component analysis of quantitative traits resulted in four components for each variety, with the explanation total of 53.3% for Longe 6H, 51.1% for Longe 7H, and 92.8% for Longe 9H and 39.1% for Longe 10%. There were varying levels of contamination of commercial hybrids based on morphoanatomical traits diversity within hybrids, compared to their descriptors for the traits evaluated. Stylosanthes hamata, Calopogonium mucunoides and Macroptilium lathyroides were intercropped with maize in a randomized block design. Age of maturity, forage dry matter and seed yields were determined at the end of their cycles. In another experiment, S. hamata and C. mucunoides were planted and divided into cutting, grazing and control subplots. Lactating zebu cows were put in the grazing subplots, while cutting subplots were cut at the end of the grazing period. Intercropping had no significant effect on the age of flowering and seeding. The establishment rate was however slower in intercropped C. mucunoides and S. hamata. The forage dry matter yield was similar in pure and intercropped C. mucunoides and M. lathyroides, respectively, but significantly higher in pure S. hamata plots (p < 0.01). The seed yield was similar in the two treatments of S. hamata and M. lathyroides, but significantly higher in pure C. mucunoides plots (p < 0.001). In the establishment year, grazing and cutting reduced seed yield of S. hamata (p < 0.001) compared to control. However, the difference was largely offset by a 35% milk yield increase in cows grazing S. hamata. These results indicate that forage legume seed production is feasible and manageable in an integrated production system.

Seed production costs of seven forage legumes were evaluated in the Sudano-Sahelian region of Cameroon. They were under 1000 FCFA/kg for Calopogonium mucunoides, Cajanus cajan, Desmodium distortum, Mucuna pruriens and Stylosanthes hamata. Production costs of 1890 and 3025 FCFA/kg for Centrosema pascuorum and Macroptilium lathyroides, respectively, did not appear attractive for the study area.

The variety 'Sáwali Oro C2008' was developed at Norman E. Borlaug Experimental Station through a collaborative project between the National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center. Its pedigree and selection history is MUSK_1//ACO89/FNFOOT_2/4/MUSK_4/3/PLATA_3//CREX/ALLA/5/OLUS*2/ILBOR//PATKA_7/ YAZI_1, CDSS02Y00786T-0TOPB-0Y-0M-2Y-0M-0Y. This cultivar is resistant to leaf rust, and the quality characteristics for pasta-making are better than commercial control variety 'Júpare C2001', so that it becomes a better option for international export for wheat producers from northwestern Mexico. During crop seasons of evaluation 2006-2007 to 2008-2009, 'Sáwali Oro' showed a range of experimental grain yield of 4.5 to 6.9 t ha-1, resistance to leaf rust, and the intensity of the yellow pigment in the grain endosperm showed an average of 27.8 points in the Minolta b value. This cultivar has the registration TRI-109-240209 in the national catalog of cultivars feasible for registration. Seed may be purchased through several seed companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
