The sensitizing potential of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the guinea pig could be demonstrated by Freund's Complete Adjuvant Test. This acrylate ester is a common constituent of adhesive tape. The aim of this study was to investigate the sensitizing potential of 12 di(meth)acrylates when tested in the Guinea Pig Maximization Test (GPMT) and Freund's Complete Adjuvant Test (FCAT). In these tests the same (malar) concentration was used for intradermal induction. The results (see table, below) show that dimethacrylates are moderate to strong sensitizers in the guinea pig. In the group of diacrylates, no sensitization to diethylene glycol diacrylate was observed, 1,2-ethenediol diacrylate and 1,6-hezanediol diacrylate sensitized a number of animals. The challenge reaction pattern of the FCAT with 1,4-butanediol diacrylate, neopentane diol diacrylate and 1,5-pentanediol diacylate differed from that commonly observed with sensitizers. Positive reactions were seen only to the maximum non-irritant concentration at 24 h in the challenge at day 21. At 48 h and in the second challenge at day 35, the reactivity had decreased or disappeared. This different reaction pattern makes it difficult to classify these monomers with certainty as sensitizers. In most of the FCATs, a decrease in reactivity in successive challenges was found. Possible explanations for this decrease and for the different challenge reaction patterns of some diacrylates are discussed. The skin irritant capacity of dimethacrylates was estimated after one open application. Diacrylates are very strong irritants on guinea pig skin. Dimethacrylates are weak irritants. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the sensitizing potential of 14 mono(meth)acrylates, when tested by the guinea pig maximization test (GPMT) and Freund's complete adjuvant test (FCAT) with an identical, intradermal induction concentration. A new grading classification of the sensitization potential is proposed. Mono(meth)acrylates show a wide range of sensitizing potential. Compared with other (meth)acrylates, methyl methacrylate is a moderate sensitizer. Attention was paid to concomitant sensitization of additives. Concomitant sensitization to hydroquinone and p-methoxyphenol occurred in sensitization experiments with acrylic monomers in guinea pigs. No relation between the concentration of the inhibitor in the monomers and the incidence of these concomitant sensitizations could be detected. Concomitant sensitization did not influence the cross reaction pattern of the acrylic monomers. The sensitizing potential of acrylic monomers is not influenced by the inhibitors, but some acrylic monomers seem to interfere with the sensitizing potential of the inhibitors. The frequency of positive reactions to 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MCI/MI) were studied at 22 European contact dermatitis clinics over a period of 1 year. A total of 4713 patients participated. All the patients were patch tested with nickel sulphate, formaldehyde, paraben-mix, and MCI/MI. 19.4% of the patients had positive patch tests to nickel, making this the most common allergen. 3% of the patients reacted to 100 ppm MCI/MI, while 2.6% reacted to formaldehyde and 1.1% to parabens. There was great variation in the frequency of MCI/MI sensitivity among the 22 centres. MCI/MI contact allergy was most common among women and in patients with facial dermatitis, while it was rarely seen in patients with dermatitis on the lower legs. There were no fluctuations in the number of positive patch tests to MCI/MI on a monthly basis when the results from all centres were combined. 117 of the 141 MCI/MI sensitized patients included in the study were retested. 88% had positive patch tests when retested. 101 of the MCI/MI-sensitive patients participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled product use test. This test showed that 31% of the MCI/MI-sensitive patients had a positive reaction to a MCI/MI-preserved product. Only a few patients reacted to a control product. This article presents case study of a 23-year-old chemical technician who developed erythema and small blisters on his hand. Patient said that he spilt monochloroacetic acid (MCA) over the dorsum of his right hand and forearm. The patient was patch tested with the international standard series and the MCA solution. Results indicated that patient showed negative reactions to MCA. As sensitization to MCA was unlikely but the ethylester of monochloroacetic acid (EMCA) was suspected as the causative agent.
