Abstract

International audience; In July 2017, the MMS constellation was evolving in the magnetotail with an apogee of 25 Earth radii and an average inter-satellite distance of 10 km (i.e. at electron scales). On 23rd of July around 16:19 UT, MMS was located at the edge of the current sheet which was in a quasi-static state. Then, MMS suddenly entered in the central plasma sheet and detected the local onset of a small substorm as indicated by the AE index (∼400 nT). Fast earthward plasma flows were measured during about 1 hour starting with a period of quasi-steady flow and followed by a saw-tooth like series of plasma jets. This plasma transport sequence ended up by a flow reversal still occurring close to the magnetic equator. Thanks to the unprecedented MMS measurement capability, these different phases are analyzed in terms of wave activity, current signatures, particle acceleration and heating. The origin of these two phases of plasma transport is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; We will review the science objectives of the Radio & Plasmas Waves (RPW) instrument on the Solar Orbiter mission. Among those the study of the connectivity between the solar corona and the inner Heliosphere as close as from 0.3 AU and the kinetic behavior of the Solar Wind are of prime importance. We present then the RPW technical capabilities which will allow in-situ and remote sensing measurements of both electrostatic and electromagnetic fields and waves in a broad frequency range, typically from a fraction of Hertz to a few tens of MHz.

Abstract

International audience; We analyze two ion scale dipolarization fronts associated with field-aligned currents detected by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission during a large substorm on 10 August 2016. The first event corresponds to a fast dawnward flow with an antiparallel current and could be generated by the wake of a previous fast earthward flow. It is associated with intense lower hybrid drift waves detected at the front and propagating dawnward with a perpendicular phase speed close to the electric drift and the ion thermal velocity. The second event corresponds to a flow reversal: from southwward/dawnward to northward/duskward associated with a parallel current consistent with a brief expansion of the plasma sheet before the front crossing and with a smaller lower hybrid drift wave activity. Electromagnetic electron phase-space holes are detected near these low-frequency drift waves during both events. The drift waves could accelerate electrons parallel to the magnetic field and produce the parallel electron drift needed to generate the electron holes. Yet we cannot rule out the possibility that the drift waves are produced by the antiparallel current associated with the fast flows, leaving the source for the electron holes unexplained.

Abstract

International audience; Plasma jets aka bursty bulk flows play a crucial role in Earth's plasmasheet dynamics, in particular during substorms where they can sometimes even penetrate down to the geosynchronous orbit. The energy input from the solar wind is partly dissipated in jet fronts(also called dipolarization fronts) in the form of strong whistler waves that can heat and accelerate energetic electrons. The ratio of the energy transported during jets to the substorm energy consumption is still under debate due to instrumental limitations. In May 2015 the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission evolves in a string-of-pearls configuration with an average inter-satellite distance of 300 km which allows us to study in detail the microphysics of these phenomena. Thus in this study we employ MMS data to investigate the properties of jet fronts propagating earthward and their associated whistler-mode wave emissions. We show that the spatial dynamics of jet fronts are of the order of the ion gyroradius and whistler-wave dynamics have a temporal scale of a few seconds. We also investigate the energy dissipation associated with such waves and their interaction with energetic electrons in the vicinity of the flow/jet braking region. In addition, we make use of ray tracing simulations to evaluate their propagation properties, as well as their impact on particles in the off-equatorial magnetosphere.

Abstract

International audience; Dipolarization fronts (DFs), embedded in bursty bulk flows, play a crucial role in Earth's plasma sheet dynamics because the energy input from the solar wind is partly dissipated in their vicinity. This dissipation is in the form of strong low-frequency waves that can heat and accelerate energetic electrons up to the high-latitude plasma sheet. However, the dynamics of DF propagation and associated low-frequency waves in the magnetotail are still under debate due to instrumental limitations and spacecraft separation distances. In May 2015 the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission was in a string-of-pearls configuration with an average intersatellite distance of 160 km, which allows us to study in detail the microphysics of DFs. Thus, in this letter we employ MMS data to investigate the properties of dipolarization fronts propagating earthward and associated whistler mode wave emissions. We show that the spatial dynamics of DFs are below the ion gyroradius scale in this region (˜500 km), which can modify the dynamics of ions in the vicinity of the DF (e.g., making their motion nonadiabatic). We also show that whistler wave dynamics have a temporal scale of the order of the ion gyroperiod (a few seconds), indicating that the perpendicular temperature anisotropy can vary on such time scales.

Abstract

International audience; In collisionless plasmas, turbulence is thought to play an important role in mass transport and energy dissipation. Magnetic fluctuations in the Jovian magnetosphere are essential in a turbulent state. Previous studies of that turbulence have focused on the large scales using low time resolution of magnetic field data. Here we extend those studies to cover a wider range of scales by combining both low and high-time-resolution data of Galileo magnetometer. We use particle data from the plasma instrument and include energetic particle contributions to estimate the local plasma parameters. We obtain 11 power spectra of magnetic field in the frequency range of 10(-4)-1Hz, which covers both magnetohydrodynamics and ion kinetic scales. The frequencies of the evidenced spectral breaks are found to be relatively well correlated with the characteristic scales of heavy ion. The spectral indices below and above the spectral breaks are found to be broad and cover the ranges of 0.6-1.9 and 1.7-2.5, respectively. An analysis of higher-order statistics shows an intermittent feature of the turbulence, found to be more prominent in the plasma sheet than in the lobe. Furthermore, a statistical survey of the power of the fluctuations using low-time-resolution data suggests a radially varying dawn-dusk asymmetry: the total power is larger in the duskside (dawnside) at \textless50 R-J (\textgreater80 R-J), which would reflect flow shear and global magnetospheric activity.

Abstract

International audience; Magnetic reconnection is a universal mechanism that is responsible for major energy conversion in planetary magnetospheres. Recent theoretical estimations suggest that reconnection is infrequent at Saturn's magnetopause and that it is not a major driver of the dynamics of the kronian magnetosphere. This scenario need however to be confirmed by in situ observations at the magnetopause current sheet. Evidence of reconnection in the form of accelerated plasma jets is difficult at Saturn's magnetopause due to limitations in the field of view of particle detectors. Here we show evidence of reconnection for one magnetopause event by using measurements of low frequency waves (lower-hybrid, whistlers, plasma/upper hybrid). We discuss how wave measurements can be used as evidence of reconnection in planetary magnetospheres.

Abstract

International audience; Jupiter's radio emissions are dominated in intensity by decametric radio emissions due to the Io-Jupiter interaction. Previous analyses suggest that these emissions are cyclotron-maser emissions in the flux tubes connecting Io or Io's wake to Jupiter. The electrons that trigger the emission are thought to be accelerated toward Jupiter. We present simulations of this hot electron population under the assumption of impulsive acceleration, consistent with the accelerated electron populations seen in the Io's wake by Galileo during its flyby in 1995. After the impulsive acceleration phase, the electrons are supposed to have an adiabatic motion along the magnetic field lines. Near Jupiter, a loss cone and a shell appear in the magnetically mirrored electron population. Such features are able to amplify extraordinary (X) mode radio waves. We compute the X-mode growth rate, which allows us to build theoretical dynamic spectra of the resulting Jovian radio emissions. The study of the growth rates obtained by simulation and their comparison with ground-based radio observations provide strong constraints on the acceleration process and energy sources at the origin of the Io-controlled decameter emissions.
