Abstract

International audience; Taking benefit of the R3B/SOFIA setup to measure the mass and the nuclear charge of both fission fragments in coincidence with the total prompt-neutron multiplicity, the scission configurations are inferred along the thorium chain, from the asymmetric fission in the heavier isotopes to the symmetric fission in the neutron-deficient thorium. Against all expectations, the symmetric scission in the light thorium isotopes shows a compact configuration, which is in total contrast to what is known in the fission of the heavier thorium isotopes and heavier actinides. This new main symmetric scission mode is characterized by a significant drop in deformation energy of the fission fragments of about 19 MeV, compared to the well-known symmetric scission in the uranium-plutonium region.

9 pags., 5 figs., 2 tabs., The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z=6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed NA(p,2p)CA−1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 2 state of C. 8 pags., 3 figs., We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C at the R3B setup in a first campaign within FAIR Phase 0 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The goal was to improve the accuracy of the experimental data for the 12C(α,γ)16O fusion reaction and to reach lower center-ofmass energies than measured so far. The experiment required beam intensities of 109 16O ions per second at an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon. The rare case of Coulomb breakup into 12C and 4He posed another challenge: The magnetic rigidities of the particles are so close because of the same mass-to-charge-number ratio A/Z = 2 for 16O, 12C and 4He. Hence, radical changes of the R3B setup were necessary. All detectors had slits to allow the passage of the unreacted 16O ions, while 4He and 12C would hit the detectors’ active areas depending on the scattering angle and their relative energies. We developed and built detectors based on organic scintillators to track and identify the reaction products with sufficient precision., This project was carried out within FAIR Phase 0 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. Abstract

International audience; The inverse kinematics technique, applied to radioactive beams and combined to the Coulomb excitation method, is a powerful tool to study low-energy fission. A novel experimental setup was developed within the R3B/SOFIA (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams/Studies On FIssion with Aladin) collaboration to identify in mass and atomic numbers both fission fragments in coincidence. These new data provide elemental, isobaric, and isotonic yields for the fission along the thorium isotopic chain. Results are also compared to previous measurements using either the same reaction mechanism or thermal-neutron induced fission. This latter comparison permits to probe the influence of the excitation energy in the fission process.

Abstract

Single-neutron and single-proton removal cross sections have been measured for medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei around Z=50 and energies around 1000A MeV using the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The measured cross sections confirm the relative low values of the proton-removal cross sections, observed since a long time ago and not yet understood. Model calculations considering the knock-out process together with initial- and final-state interactions describe the measured neutron-removal cross sections. Proton-removal cross sections are, however, significantly over-predicted by the same calculations. The observed difference can be explained to a large extent by the knock-out of short-range correlated nucleons from dominant neutron-proton pairs in neutron-rich nuclei.

7 pags., 4 figs., 2 tabs. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The quasi-free scattering reactions C(p,2p) and C(p,pn) have been studied in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 300–400 MeV/u at the RB-LAND setup. The outgoing proton-proton and proton-neutron pairs were detected in coincidence with the reaction fragments in kinematically complete measurements. The efficiency to detect these pairs has been obtained from GEANT4 simulations which were tested using the C(p,2p) and C(p,pn) reactions. Experimental cross sections and momentum distributions have been obtained and compared to DWIA calculations based on eikonal theory. The new results reported here are combined with previously published cross sections for quasi-free scattering from oxygen and nitrogen isotopes and together they enable a systematic study of the reduction of single-particle strength compared to predictions of the shell model over a wide neutron-to-proton asymmetry range. The combined reduction factors show a weak or no dependence on isospin asymmetry, in contrast to the strong dependency reported in nucleon-removal reactions induced by nuclear targets at lower energies. Abstract

International audience; Neutron- and proton-removal cross sections for nuclei around ^132Sn have been systematically measured. The measurements clearly show the effect of the N = 82 closed shells. Model calculations describing all processes leading to single nucleon removal residual nuclei provide a reasonable description of the neutron removal process but clearly overestimate the proton removal ones. This overestimation of the proton removal channels could be explained as due to the presence of short-range correlated neutron-proton pairs in nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; Hypernuclear physics is a longstanding field of research in which innovative experiments using the inverse kinematics technique to accelerate light, medium, and heavy nuclei at relativistic energies have become an important tool to study the properties of hypernuclei. We investigate the hypernuclei production in spallation reactions where multi-fragmentation, evaporation, and fission processes play an important role in the formation of final hypernuclei residues. For the description of spallation reactions, we couple the Liège intranuclear-cascade model, extended recently to strange particles, to a new version of the de-excitation model ABLA07 that accounts for the evaporation of \(\Lambda \) particles from hot hyperremnants produced during the intranuclear cascade stage. These state-of-the-art models are used to study the production of hypernuclei close to the limits of the chart of nuclei.

6 pags., 4 figs., The emission of neutron pairs from the neutron-rich N = 12 isotones C-18 and O-20 has been studied by high-energy nucleon knockout from N-19 and O-21 secondary beams, populating unbound states of the two isotones up to 15 MeV above their two-neutron emission thresholds. The analysis of triple fragment-n-n correlations shows that the decay N-19(-1p)18C*-> C-16 + n + n is clearly dominated by direct pair emission. The two- neutron correlation strength, the largest ever observed, suggests the predominance of a C-14 core surrounded by four valence neutrons arranged in strongly correlated pairs. On the other hand, a significant competition of a sequential branch is found in the decay O-21(-1n)O-20*-> O-18 + n + n, attributed to its formation through the knockout of a deeply bound neutron that breaks the O-16 core and reduces the number of pairs., This work was supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF Project No. 05P15RDFN1), and through the GSI-TU Darmstadt cooperation agreement. Abstract

International audience; Background: For many years, quasifree scattering reactions in direct kinematics have been extensively used to study the structure of stable nuclei, demonstrating the potential of this approach. The RB3 collaboration has performed a pilot experiment to study quasifree scattering reactions in inverse kinematics for a stable C12 beam. The results from that experiment constitute the first quasifree scattering results in inverse and complete kinematics. This technique has lately been extended to exotic beams to investigate the evolution of shell structure, which has attracted much interest due to changes in shell structure if the number of protons or neutrons is varied. Purpose: In this work we investigate for the first time the quasifree scattering reactions (p,pn) and (p,2p) simultaneously for the same projectile in inverse and complete kinematics for radioactive beams with the aim to study the evolution of single-particle properties from N=14 to N=15. Method: The structure of the projectiles O23, O22, and N21 has been studied simultaneously via (p,pn) and (p,2p) quasifree knockout reactions in complete inverse kinematics, allowing the investigation of proton and neutron structure at the same time. The experimental data were collected at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI at beam energies of around 400 MeV/u. Two key observables have been studied to shed light on the structure of those nuclei: the inclusive cross sections and the corresponding momentum distributions. Conclusions: The knockout reactions (p,pn) and (p,2p) with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics have provided important and complementary information for the study of shell evolution and structure. For the (p,pn) channels, indications of a change in the structure of these nuclei moving from N=14 to N=15 have been observed, i.e., from the 0d5/2 shell to the 1s1/2. This supports previous observations of a subshell closure at N=14 for neutron-rich oxygen isotopes and its weakening for the nitrogen isotopes.

Abstract

Isochronous mass spectrometry was applied to measure isomeric yield ratios of fragmentation reaction products. This approach is complementary to conventional gamma-ray spectroscopy in particular for measuring yield ratios for long-lived isomeric states. Isomeric yield ratios for the high-spin I = 19/2 states in the mirror nuclei 53Fe and 53Co are measured to study angular momentum population following the projectile fragmentation of 78Kr at energies of 480A MeV on a beryllium target. The 19/2 state isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced from different projectiles in the literature have also been extracted as a function of mass number difference between projectile and fragment (mass loss). The results are compared to ABRABLA07 model calculations. The isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced using different projectiles suggest that the theory underestimates not only the previously reported dependence on the spin but also the dependence on the mass loss., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Background: Odd-odd nuclei, around doubly closed shells, have been extensively used to study proton-neutron interactions. However, the evolution of these interactions as a function of the binding energy, ultimately when nuclei become unbound, is poorly known. The $^{26}$F nucleus, composed of a deeply bound $\pi0d\_{5/2}$ proton and an unbound $\nu0d\_{3/2}$ neutron on top of an $^{24}$O core, is particularly adapted for this purpose. The coupling of this proton and neutron results in a $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet, whose energies must be determined to study the influence of the proximity of the continuum on the corresponding proton-neutron interaction. The $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1, 2^{+}\_1,4^{+}\_1$ bound states have been determined, and only a clear identification of the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ is missing.Purpose: We wish to complete the study of the $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet in $^{26}$F, by studying the energy and width of the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ unbound state. The method was firstly validated by the study of unbound states in $^{25}$F, for which resonances were already observed in a previous experiment.Method: Radioactive beams of $^{26}$Ne and $^{27}$Ne, produced at about $440A$\,MeV by the FRagment Separator at the GSI facility, were used to populate unbound states in $^{25}$F and $^{26}$F via one-proton knockout reactions on a CH$\_2$ target, located at the object focal point of the R$^3$B/LAND setup. The detection of emitted $\gamma$-rays and neutrons, added to the reconstruction of the momentum vector of the $A-1$ nuclei, allowed the determination of the energy of three unbound states in $^{25}$F and two in $^{26}$F. Results: Based on its width and decay properties, the first unbound state in $^{25}$F is proposed to be a $J^{\pi} = 1/2^-$ arising from a $p\_{1/2}$ proton-hole state. In $^{26}$F, the first resonance at 323(33)~keV is proposed to be the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ member of the $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet. Energies of observed states in $^{25,26}$F have been compared to calculations using the independent-particle shell model, a phenomenological shell-model, and the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group method.Conclusions: The deduced effective proton-neutron interaction is weakened by about 30-40\% in comparison to the models, pointing to the need of implementing the role of the continuum in theoretical descriptions, or to a wrong determination of the atomic mass of $^{26}$F., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, submitted to PRC

Abstract

We report on the second SOFIA experiment, dedicated to the fission yields of 236U*, analog to 235U(n,f). The measurement is based on the inverse kinematics method, using a relativistic, secondary beam of 236U. Both fission fragments are identified in mass and charge in the SOFIA recoil spectrometer. The obtained isotopic yields are compared with existing spectroscopy measurements and the elemental yields are used to discuss the treatment of the even-odd effect with energy in nuclear data libraries.

Abstract

The experiment was performed at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany).; Around 270 medium-mass residual nuclei, formed in spallation reactions induced by 136Xe projectiles impinging on a liquid hydrogen target at 500 AMeV, have been unambiguously identified at GSI using the magnetic spectrometer FRS. The individual production cross sections and the longitudinal momentum distributions have been determined with high accuracy. These data represent an important constraint for theoretical models describing spallation reactions.

Abstract

International audience; With the R$^{3}$B-LAND setup at GSI we have measured exclusive relative-energy spectra of the Coulomb dissociation of $^{18}$C at a projectile energy around 425~AMeV on a lead target, which are needed to determine the radiative neutron-capture cross sections of $^{17}$C into the ground state of $^{18}$C. Those data have been used to constrain theoretical calculations for transitions populating excited states in $^{18}$C. This allowed to derive the astrophysical cross section $\sigma^{*}_{\mathrm{n}\gamma}$ accounting for the thermal population of $^{17}$C target states in astrophysical scenarios. The experimentally verified capture rate is significantly lower than those of previously obtained Hauser-Feshbach estimations at temperatures $T_{9}\leq{}1$~GK. Network simulations with updated neutron-capture rates and hydrodynamics according to the neutrino-driven wind model as well as the neutron-star merger scenario reveal no pronounced influence of neutron capture of $^{17}$C on the production of second- and third-peak elements in contrast to earlier sensitivity studies.

International audience; A complete kinematics measurement of the two fission fragments was used for the first time to investigatefission dynamics at small and large deformations. Fissioning systems with high excitation energies, compactshapes, and low angular momenta were produced in inverse kinematics by using spallation reactions of leadprojectiles. A new generation experimental setup allowed for the first full and unambiguous identification inmass and atomic number of both fission fragments. This measurement permitted us to accurately determinefission cross sections, the charge distribution, and the neutron excess of the fission fragments as a function of theatomic number of the fissioning system. These data are compared with different model calculations to extractinformation on the value of the dissipation parameter at small and large deformations. The present results do notshow any sizable dependence of the nuclear dissipation parameter on temperature or deformation.

Abstract

International audience; The study of dissipative effects in fission has been carried out with fusion-fission reactions by using a limited number of observables, such as the fission probabilities, the mass distribution of the fission fragments, or the neutron multiplicities. However, the large angular momenta gained by the compound nucleus in this kind of reaction could affect the conclusions drawn from such experiments. In this work, we propose to investigate the fission dynamics by the use of spallation reactions on 208Pb because the fissioning systems are produced with low angular momentum, small deformations, and high excitation energies, enhancing the dissipative effects. The complete kinematics measurements of the fission fragments and light-charged particles were performed by the use of the SOFIA setup combined with the inverse kinematics technique, allowing us for the first time a full indentification in atomic and mass number of the two fission fragments. These measurements permit us to define new fission observables for the investigation of the temperature and deformation dependencies of the dissipation parameter.

Abstract

International audience; Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. Abstract

International audience; Light-charged particles emitted in proton-induced fission reactions on (208)Pb have been measured at different kinetic energies: 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV. The experiment was performed by the SOFIA collaboration at the GSI facilities in Darmstadt (Germany). The inverse kinematics technique was combined with a setup especially designed to measure light-charged particles in coincidence with fission fragments. The data were compared with different model calculations to assess the ground-to-saddle dynamics. The results confirm that transient and dissipative effects are required for an accurate description of the fission observables.

Reifarth et al: ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 3.0 ; Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., This project was supported by the HGF Young Investigators Project VH-NG-327, EMMI, H4F, HGS-HIRe, JINA, NAVI, DFG and ATHENA.

Abstract

The preliminary results from the RISING Stopped Beam Isomer Campaign are presented, with specific focus on results of the initial experiment to investigate isomeric decays along the N=Z line around A similar to 80-90 following the projectile fragmentation of a Ag-107 primary beam at an energy of 750 MeV per nucleon. A description of the technical aspects behind the design of the RISING array is presented, together with evidence for previously unreported isomeric decays in Tc-87,Tc-88 and the N=Z nuclei Nb-82(41) and Tc-86(43).

Abstract

Topical Collection : Perspectives on Nuclear Data for the Next Decade; International audience; A novel technique for fission studies, based on the inverse kinematics approach, is presented. Following pioneering work in the nineties, the SOFIA Collaboration has designed and built an experimental set-up dedicated to the simultaneous measurement of isotopic yields, total kinetic energies and total prompt neutron multiplicities, by fully identifying both fission fragments in coincidence, for the very first time. This experiment, performed at GSI, permits to study the fission of a wide variety of fissioning systems, ranging from mercury to neptunium, possibly far from the valley of stability. A first experiment, performed in 2012, has provided a large array of unprecedented data regarding the nuclear fission process. An excerpt of the results is presented. With this solid starter, further improvements of the experimental set-up are considered, which are consistent with the expected developments at the GSI facility, in order to measure more fission observables in coincidence. The completeness reached in the SOFIA data, permits to scrutinize the correlations between the interesting features of fission, offering a very detailed insight in this still unraveled mechanism.

Abstract

International audience; The first ever achieved full identification of both fission fragments, in atomic and mass number, made it possible to define new observables sensitive to the fission dynamics along the fission path up to the scission point. Moreover, proton-induced fission of 208 Pb at high energies offers optimal conditions for the investigation of dissipative, and transient effects, because of the high-excitation energy of the fissioning nuclei, its low angular momentum, and limited shape distortion by the reaction. In this work we show that the charge distribution of the final fission fragments can constrain the ground-to-saddle dynamics while the mass distribution is sensitive to the dynamics until the scission point.

Abstract

International audience; The nuclear level density is one of the main ingredients for the statistical description of the fission process.In this work, we propose to constrain the description of this parameter by using fission reactions induced byprotons and light ions on 208Pb at high kinetic energies. The experiment was performed at GSI (Darmstadt),where the combined use of the inverse kinematics technique with an efficient detection setup allowed us tomeasure the atomic number of the two fission fragments in coincidence. This measurement permitted us to obtainwith high precision the partial fission cross sections and the width of the charge distribution as a function of theatomic number of the fissioning system. These data and others previously measured, covering a large range infissility, are compared to state-of-the-art calculations. The results reveal that total and partial fission cross sectionscannot unambiguously constrain the level density at ground-state and saddle-point deformations and additionalobservables, such as the width of the charge distribution of the final fission fragments, are required.

Abstract

Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Common attribution Licence 4.0; International audience; SOFIA (Studies On Fission with Aladin) is a new experimental setup dedicated to accurate measurement of fission-fragments isotopic yields. It is located at GSI, the only place to use inverse kinematics at relativistic energies in order to study the (γ,f) electromagnetic-induced fission. The SOFIA setup is a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer, which allows to fully identify both fission fragments in coincidence on the whole fission-fragment range. This paper will report on fission yields obtained in 234,235,236,238 U(γ,f) reactions.

Abstract

Complex structural effects in the nuclide production from the projectile fragmentation of 1 A GeV 238 U nuclei in a titanium target, manifested as an even-odd effect, are reported. The structure seems to be insensitive to the excitation energy induced in the reaction. This is in contrast to the prominent structural features found in nuclear fission and in transfer reactions, which gradually disappear with increasing excitation energy. Most of the features of the results are reproduced using the statistical model of nuclear reactions, treating the pairing correlations in a consistent way both in the masses and in the level densities. The structures appear as the result of the condensation process of heated nuclear matter while cooling down in the evaporation process. As such, it can be considered a manifestation of the passage from the normal liquid phase of the nucleus to its superfluid phase.

Abstract

High resolution measurements with a magnetic spectrometer show a post-acceleration of the projectile-like residues produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The observed post-acceleration increases with the mass loss of the residual fragments. Lighter residues are observed to be produced at velocities even higher than the projectile. A dependence with the mass of the target and the energy of beam is also observed. This effect is interpreted as the response of the projectile spectator to the participant blast indicating a momentum dependence of the nuclear mean field.

Abstract

The accuracy of the pulse height weighting technique for the determination of neutron capture cross-sections is investigated. The technique is applied to measurements performed with C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors of two different types using capture samples of various dimensions. The data for well-known (n, gamma) resonances are analyzed using weighting functions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the experimental set-up. Several causes of systematic deviation are identified and their effect is quantified. In all the cases measured the reaction yield agrees with the standard value within 2%. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

International audience; A new semi-empirical parameterization for residue cross sections in spallation reactions is presented. Theprescription named SPACS, for spallation cross sections, permits calculating the fragment production in protonandneutron-induced collisions with light up to heavy non-fissile partners from the Fermi regime to ultrarelativisticenergies. The model is fully analytical, based on a new parameterization of the mass yields, accountingfor the dependence on bombarding energy. The formalism for the isobaric distribution consists of a commonlyused functional form, borrowed from the empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections EPAX,with the observed suited adjustments for spallation, and extended to the charge-pickup channel. Structural andeven-odd staggering related to the last stage of the primary-residue deexcitation process is additionally explicitlyintroduced with a new prescription. Calculations are benchmarked with recent data collected at GSI, Darmstadtas well as with previous measurements employing various techniques. The dependences observed experimentallyon collision energy, reaction-partner mass, and proton-neutron asymmetry are well described. A fast analyticalparameterization, such as SPACS, can be relevant to be implemented in complex simulations as used for practicalissues at nuclear facilities and plants. Its predictive power also makes it useful for cross-section estimates inastrophysics and biophysics.

Abstract

The talk presents the results of an investigation of the main characteristics (mass and energy distributions of fission fragments and multiplicity of neutrons) of the fission of the nuclei of 220 Ra, 226 Th, 256 No, 270 Sg, 286 112 produced in reactions with ions of 18 O, 22 Ne and 48 Ca at energies close to and essentially below the Coulomb barrier. The data obtained show that the form of the mass and energy distributions of the fission fragments of 226 Th and 270 Sg is accounted for by the multimodal nature of the fission. In addition, for 226 Th, a new phenomenon was established there is a significant difference between the numbers of prescission neutrons for symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. It was found that, for the low-energy fission of the nucleus of 286 112, the mass distribution of the fragments is of a clear-cut asymmetric form, contrary to what is observed for the spotaneous fission of the nuclei with Z = 100–104 and for the induced fission of 270 Sg.

Radioactive beams of 14,15B produced by fragmentation of a primary 40Ar beam were directed onto a Pb target to investigate the neutron breakup within the Coulomb field. The experiment was performed at the LAND/R3B setup. Abstract

International audience; Total fission cross sections of 208Pb induced by protons have been determined at 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV.The experiment was performed at GSI Darmstadt where the combined use of the inverse kinematics techniquewith an efficient detection setup allowed us to determine these cross sections with an uncertainty below 6%. Thisresult was achieved by an accurate beam selection and registration of both fission fragments in coincidence whichwere also clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. These data solve existing discrepancies betweenprevious measurements, providing new values for the Prokofiev systematics. The data also allow us to investigatethe fission process at high excitation energies and small deformations. In particular, some fundamental questionsabout fission dynamics have been addressed, which are related to dissipative and transient time effects.

Abstract

Several observables such us total fission cross sections, pre-saddle neutron and gamma emission or the measurement of the fission time using crystal blocking techniques show clear indications for a delay of fission at high excitation energies when compared to other de-excitation channels, namely particle evaporation . This delay is explained as the manifestation of transient effects produced by the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom in fission. This coupling can be macroscopically understood as a dissipative process. Moreover, the investigation of proton induced fission on lead is relevant for the radiological characterization of spallation targets. In this work we will present measurements of total fission cross sections and charge distributions of the fission fragments produced in proton and deuteron on lead reactions at relativistic energies. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt. Beams of lead ions were accelerated by the SIS18 synchrotron at 500 A MeV impinging then onto a liquid hydrogen/deuterium target. Projectile reaction residues, in particular fission fragments flying forward, were identified using a set of plastic scintillators and ionization chambers. Measured data were used to benchmark model calculations describing residual nuclei production in spallation reactions. In particular we used several model calculations to prove the sensitivity of the width of the charge distributions of the fission fragments to the temperature reached by the fissioning system at saddle. The deduced temperatures are clearly influenced by transient effects which cool down the fissioning nuclei from ground to saddle.

Abstract

International audience; Fission induced by lead projectiles impinging protons and deuterons at 500 A MeV has been investigated using inverse kinematics. Total fission cross sections and charge distributions of both fission fragments have been determined. The accuracy of the measured cross sections has solved some previous discrepancies. Partial fission cross sections and the widths of the charge distributions of the fission fragments, both investigated as a function of the sum of the charge of both fission fragments, clearly indicate the role of dynamical effects in high energy fission.

Abstract

Total cross sections for proton- and deuteron-induced-fission of 208Pb and 238U have been determined in the energy range between 500 MeV and 1 GeV. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt, facilitating the counting of the projectiles and the identification of the reaction products. High precision between 5 and 7 percent has been achieved by individually counting the beam particles and by registering both fission fragments in coincidence with high efficiency and full Z resolution. Fission was clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. The results were found to deviate by up to 30 percent from Prokofiev's systematics on total fission cross sections. Abstract

The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes 25O and 26O are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from 26F and 27F at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into 24O plus one or two neutrons, the 25O ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the 26O ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in 26O at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added. The electronion scattering experiment ELISe is part of the installations envisaged at the new experimental storage ring at the International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany. It offers an unique opportunity to use electrons as probe in investigations of the structure of exotic nuclei. Abstract

Peripheral collisions with radioactive heavy-ion beams at relativistic energies are discussed as an innovative approach for probing the transient regime experienced by fissile systems evolving towards quasi-equilibrium. A dedicated experiment using the advanced technical installations of GSI, Darmstadt, permitted to realize ideal conditions for the investigation of relaxation effects in the meta-stable well. Combined with a highly sensitive experimental signature, it provides a measure of the transient effects with respect to the flux over the fission barrier. Within a two-step reaction process, 45 proton-rich unstable spherical isotopes produced by projectile-fragmentation of a stable 238U beam have been used as secondary projectiles. The fragmentation of the radioactive projectiles on lead results in nearly spherical compound nuclei which span a wide range in excitation energy and fissility. The decay of these excited systems by fission is studied with a dedicated set-up which permits the detection of both fission products in coincidence and the determination of their atomic numbers with high resolution. The width of the fission-fragment nuclear charge distribution is shown to be specifically sensitive to pre-saddle transient effects and is used to establish a clock for the passage of the saddle point. The comparison of the experimental results with model calculations points to a fission delay of (3.3+/-0.7).10-21s for initially spherical compound nuclei, independent of excitation energy and fissility. This value suggests a nuclear dissipation strength at small deformation of (4.5+/-0.5).1021s-1. Abstract

The relativistic projectile fragmentation of a 750 MeV per nucleon beam of 107Agwas used to populate isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei around A = 80–90. Reaction products were separated and unambiguously identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS) and its ancillary detectors. At the final focal plane, the fragments were slowed from relativistic energies by means of an aluminium degrader and implanted in a passive stopper in the center of the high-efficiency, high-granularity Stopped Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) germanium array. This allowed the identification of excited states in the N = Z nuclei 86 43Tc and, for the first time, 82 41Nb. Isomeric states have also been identified for the first time in 87,88Tc, and a previously unreported isomer was observed in 84Nb. Experimental results are presented along with a discussion on the structure of these nuclei based on interpretations provided by several theoretical models.

Abstract

International audience; An innovative approach for studying transient effects in nuclear fission is proposed. Fragmentation of radioactive actinides is employed to prepare fissile nuclei in well-defined initial conditions, and the fission-fragment nuclear charge distribution is used to establish a clock for the dynamical evolution of the system. Based on a so-far un-reached large number of fissioning systems, the study demonstrates the undeniable manifestation of transient effects at high excitation energy and addresses the question about the influence of initial deformation.

Abstract

A novel experimental program aiming to study the properties of fragments and neutrons emitted in the fission process has been initiated. The experiment will be held at the ELISe electron-ion collider to be constructed at GSI, Darmstadt in the framework of the FAIR extension of the facility. The experiment will take advantage of the inverse kinematics allowing, in particular, a total mass and charge resolution for all fission fragments.

Abstract

This paper presents the nuclide cross sections and the longitudinal velocity distributions of residues produced in the reactions of 136Xe and 124Xe at 1 A GeV in a lead target, measured at the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator (FRS) of GSI. The data cover a broad range of isotopes of the elements between Z = 3 and Z = 56 for 136Xe and between Z = 5 and Z = 55 for 124Xe, reaching down to cross sections of a few microbarns. The velocity distributions exhibit a Gaussian shape for masses above A = 20, while more complex behaviour is observed for lighter masses. Abstract

The low-lying structures of the self-conjugate (N = Z) nuclei Nb-82(41)41 andTc-86(43)43 have been investigated using isomeric-decay spectroscopy following the projectile fragmentation of a Ag-107 beam. These represent the heaviest odd–odd N = Z nuclei in which internal decays have been identified to date. The resulting level schemes shed light on the shape evolution along the N = Z line between the doubly-magic systems Ni-56(28) and Sn-100(50) and support a preference for T = 1 states in Tz = 0 odd–odd nuclei at low excitation energies associated with a T = 1 neutron–proton pairing gap. Comparison with Projected Shell Model calculations suggests that the decay in Nb-82 may be interpreted as an isospin-changing K isomer.
