International audience; The trace-element geochemistry of speleothems is becoming increasingly used for reconstructing palaeoclimate, with a particularemphasis on elements whose concentrations vary according to hydrological conditions at the cave site (e.g. Mg, Sr, Baand U). An important step in interpreting trace-element abundances is understanding the underlying processes of their incorporation.This includes quantifying the fractionation between the solution and speleothem carbonate via partition coefficients(where the partitioning (D) of element X (DX) is the molar ratio [X/Ca] in the calcite divided by the molar ratio [X/Ca] in theparent water) and evaluating the degree of spatial variability across time-constant speleothem layers. Previous studies of howthese elements are incorporated into speleothems have focused primarily on stalagmites and their source waters in naturalcave settings, or have used synthetic solutions under cave-analogue laboratory conditions to produce similar dripstones. However,dripstones are not the only speleothem types capable of yielding useful palaeoclimate information. In this study, weinvestigate the incorporation of Mg, Sr, Ba and U into a subaqueous calcite speleothem (CD3) growing in a natural cave poolin Italy. Pool-water measurements extending back 15 years reveal a remarkably stable geochemical environment owing to thedeep cave setting, enabling the calculation of precise solution [X/Ca]. We determine the trace element variability of ‘modern’subaqueous calcite from a drill core taken through CD3 to derive DMg, DSr, DBa and DU then compare these with publishedcave, cave-analogue and seawater-analogue studies. The DMg for CD3 is anomalously high (0.042 ± 0.002) compared to previousestimates at similar temperatures (~8 °C). The DSr (0.100 ± 0.007) is similar to previously reported values, but datafrom this study as well as those from Tremaine and Froelich (2013) and Day and Henderson (2013) suggest that [Na/Sr] mightplay an important role in Sr incorporation through the potential for Na to outcompete Sr for calcite non-lattice sites. DBa inCD3 (0.086 ± 0.008) is similar to values derived by Day and Henderson (2013) under cave-analogue conditions, whilst DU (0.013 ± 0.002) is almost an order of magnitude lower, possibly due to the unusually slow speleothem growth rates(

Abstract

Poster; International audience; Ideal cyclone-sensitive speleothems would have the following properties: active at the time of sampling and recording the past few millenia, with fast growth rate, made of clean primary calcite, precipitated without kinetic fractionation, and fed by water with a short residence time allowing for the isotopic signal of short events like cyclones to be transferred but long enough for the drip water to be supersaturated. The screening for this type of speleothem is still in progress and the results presented here are very preliminary. U-Th dating: low U concentration (9-40ng/g; host rock is reef limestone) ; significant detrital content, involving large corrections and large final age uncertainties. Growth rate is highly variable, from ~0.12 mm/yr to ~0.03mm/yr. Tau12A: δ 18 O profile shows some quite large variations (~3‰), with several abrupt events that we will try to identify in other archives. δ 13 C signal amplitude is very large (~-4 to ~-14‰) suggesting the effect of prior calcite precipitation. The δ 18 O signal gets heavier when the δ 13 C does, which could reflect the rainfall amount in this context. Var12C: δ 18 O profile shows values between-3.1 and-6.3‰, with decadal or centennial fluctuations, superimposed on a general trend which is consistent with the one of the δ 13 C profile without being correlated, which implies that calcite precipitation could occur in conditions close to isotopic equilibrium. Once properly dated, this record should provide interesting information about past rainfall regimes on the island.

Abstract

International audience; Stalagmites are well established as accurate archives for paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental records, with inorganic proxies being widely used. Organic proxies are a growing field, providing access to information stored in a separate carbon pool, and relating to microbial activity, vegetation cover, and temperature. However, the key factors controlling these proxies are not yet well defined. δ13C analysis of speleothem calcite (effectively the dissolved CO2 pool) is a routinely used technique, but the controls are not as well defined as for δ18O, with the proxy record potentially affected by vegetation change, soil conditions or microbial activity. Parallel measurement of δ13C of the preserved organic matter has been suggested as a method of resolving this signal, with an inverse relationship between the two records previously being suggested as a proxy for microbial control. However, this technique is in its infancy in speleothems, and requires testing in a greater range of contexts. This study uses a multi-proxy approach, combining δ13C analysis of calcite and the preserved organic matter, with a highly novel laser fluorescence technique to investigate climatic and land-use driven environmental variations during the Holocene period. Four stalagmites were sampled in the same room of the Garde-Cavale karst system (1300m a.s.l.), in the Bauges massif, in the northern Prealps. These samples cover the last 12 ka. δ13C analysis of soluble acid bulk organic matter was performed via LC-IRMS at La Trobe University and the University of Orléans. δ13C of the calcite was performed at University of Melbourne, Australia. Organic matter fluorescence was measured at the University of Savoie, France. This fluorescence technique provides a high resolution record (100 µm step along the growth axis), and is a non-destructive method. The three proxies show different trends during the Holocene period, although major environmental events are marked by changes in all records. Further work is needed to establish whether the differences in the proxy records are due to differing environmental controls, or whether there are methodological factors affecting the record. In particular, the organic δ13C proxy is currently under further investigation to test for sensitivity to fluctuations in instrumental parameters and matrix effects. However, in the long term, this multi-proxy approach, combining organic and inorganic techniques has great promise in resolving our understanding of environmental variations.
