International audience; Large wildfires across parts of France can cause devastating damage which puts lives, infrastructure, and the natural ecosystem at risk. In the climate change context, it is essential to better understand how these large wildfires relate to weather and climate and how they might change in a warmer world. Such projections rely on the development of a robust modelling framework linking large wildfires to present-day atmospheric variability. Drawing from a MODIS product and a gridded meteorological dataset, we derived a suite of biophysical and fire danger indices and developed generalized linear models simulating the probability of large wildfires ( > 100 ha) at 8 km spatial and daily temporal resolutions across the entire country over the last two decades. The models were able to reproduce large-wildfire activity across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Different sensitivities to weather and climate were detected across different environmental regions. Long-term drought was found to be a significant predictor of large wildfires in flammability-limited systems such as the Alpine and south-western regions. In the Mediterranean, large wildfires were found to be associated with both short-term fire weather conditions and longer-term soil moisture deficits, collectively facilitating the occurrence of large wildfires. Simulated probabilities on days with large wildfires were on average 2-3 times higher than normal with respect to the mean seasonal cycle, highlighting the key role of atmospheric variability in wildfire spread. The model has wide applications, including improving our understanding of the drivers of large wildfires over the historical period and providing a basis on which to estimate future changes to large wildfires from climate scenarios.

Dans un contexte de pression urbaine et de déprise agricole, les interfaces habitat-forêt se multiplient en France méditerranéenne et deviennent une véritable préoccupation pour la gestion des territoires et du risque d'incendie de forêt. Dans le département des Bouches-du-Rhône, les chercheurs d'Irstea ont utilisé la méthodologie de cartographie diachronique pour y mesurer le développement spatio-temporel de ces espaces afin d'aider les décideurs à cibler les priorités d'actions de prévention.

International audience; Fire risk is high in Wildland-Urban Interfaces (WUI) and WUI fires, burning the surrounding ornamental vegetation, are often transmitted to structures. Thus, to be able to use fire-wise species in such locations, the assessment and ranking of the flammability of ornamental plant species are required. The flammability of seven species, among those most frequently planted in hedges in SE France, was studied, under laboratory conditions, at two levels: live leaf and litter. Leaf characteristics (FMC, mass, surface, volume, S/V ratio) were measured and the flammability parameters (ignition frequency, time-to-ignition, flaming duration) were recorded using an epiradiator as burning device. The Gross Heat of Combustion (GHC) was measured by calorimetry. The flammability parameters (ignition frequency, time-to-ignition, flaming duration and initial flame propagation) as well as the bulk density of the undisturbed litter samples were recorded during burning experiments performed on a fire bench. Regarding live leaves, burning experiments showed that Phyllostachys sp. and Photinia fraseri had higher ignitability (along with Pyracantha coccinea) and sustainability and were characterized by low FMC whereas Pittosporum tobira and Nerium oleander had lower ignitability and were characterized by high GHC. Prunus laurocerasus and Cupressus sempervirens had lower sustainability and were characterized by low S/V ratio. Regarding litters, Cupressus sempervirens and Pyracantha coccinea (high proportions of scale-leaves and/or fine particles and high bulk density) presented higher sustainability, ignitability (high ignition frequency), along with Photinia fraseri, and lowest combustibility (low flame propagation) along with Pittosporum tobira. The latter, characterized by high proportions of debris, coarse particles and evergreen leaves, was the least ignitable (high time-to-ignition) along with litters of Pyracantha coccinea and Nerium oleander, and had lower sustainability along with those of Phyllostachys sp. and Nerium. Litters of Prunus laurocerasus, Photinia fraseri and Phyllostachys had better combustibility (high proportions of debris) and the latter was also quick to ignite. Hierarchical cluster analysis performed on the flammability parameters recorded during both types of experiments ranked the seven species in four distinct clusters from the most flammable (Phyllostachys sp. and Photinia fraseri) to the least flammable (Pittosporum tobira and Nerium oleander); the other species displaying two groups of intermediate flammabilities (Prunus laurocerasus-Pyracantha coccinea and Cupressus sempervirens ). Further flammability experiments on the whole plant are needed and the highly flammable species should not be used in hedges planted in WUIs in SE France.

International audience; Fire is one of the environmental risks that is expected to increase in connection to climate change. Fire will be more common in regions where it is today less thought of. EU-FireSmart is a project whose objectives are to identify obstacles that hinder the effectiveness of forest fire preventive measures and to derive recommendations to integrate prevention practices into standard forest management plans. The project tackles both the European and local level of addressing forest fire prevention, where the local level has been covered through the implementation of test areas in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Documents containing information about different methods and practices of forest fire prevention in Europe have been gathered in a database which now contains more than 1,400 entries. The material available in this database has been analysed according to the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of different land management practices. This analysis has been performed considering different subjects. The analysis is then used to derive practical recommendations on how to turn current negative fire prevention factors into viable and proactive factors able to strengthen prevention methods. Agroforestry has been found to be a strong preventive method and the strengths and weaknesses of the method as well as the practical recommendations for increasing the preventive values of agroforestry are presented.

International audience; Fire incidence upon southern European forests is expected to worsen as a result of climate change; furthermore, fire prevention methods, priorities, practices and legal frames vary considerably across Europe. Hence the need to reinforce the corner stone of fire fighting, i.e.: fire prevention. However, the baseline knowledge concerning forest fire preventive practices is atomized and not universally accessible to the wide stakeholder community, particularly along the silvicultural chain. This paper presents early results of the EU Support Action EU-FireSmart whose objectives are: (i) to identify the obstacles that hinder the effectiveness of forest fire preventive measures and (ii) to derive recommendations to integrate prevention practices in regular forest management plans. The analysis tackles both the European and the local panorama, by means of test sites in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. A scientific and technological data base (1400 entries, public by mid 2011) of forest fire prevention methods or practices has been gathered and analysed to ascertain the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the said preventive experiences within eight defined topics (agroforestry and grazing as preventive measures, awareness rising, prevention in the wild land urban interface, etc). The analysis of the DB yields practical recommendations to turn current negative factors into pro-active forest fire prevention measures, also backed up by the preliminary conclusions of a questionnaire designed for experienced forest managers and scientists.

Les zones où l'habitat est en contact étroit avec la forêt représentent plus particulièrement un danger et deviennent une véritable préoccupation pour les gestionnaires, qui ont besoin d'outils de localisation pour agir et limiter les risques d'incendies dans ces territoires. Cet article présente une méthode innovante d'évaluation du risque fondée sur l'observation et la description ainsi que sur l'analyse spatiale et statistique de ces zones à risque.

Dans ce livre, le Cemagref, institut de recherche en sciences et technologies pour l'environnement, fait le point de ses travaux scientifiques menés sur la forêt. Pourquoi une recherche sur la forêt ? D'abord parce qu'elle occupe plus d'un quart de la surface de notre territoire métropolitain. Ensuite, parce qu'elle fournit tout un ensemble de services variés et, pour certains, essentiels à notre société : la production de bois, la protection contre les aléas naturels, la chasse et la promenade en sont de très bonnes illustrations. Enfin, parce qu'elle constitue un milieu naturel riche en biodiversité et occupe une place notable dans les débats sur les enjeux environnementaux. Forts de ce constat, les chercheurs et experts du Cemagref apportent leur contribution en abordant des problématiques majeures pour la gestion durable des forêts : état et dynamique de la forêt, de sa biodiversité, vulnérabilité des forêts aux changements globaux et stratégies d'adaptation, gestion multifonctionnelle des forêts, rôle de protection contre les aléas naturels, place de la forêt dans les territoires et enjeux sociaux. L'interaction entre forêt et gestion se situe ainsi au c½ur de nos travaux.

Establishing relationships between WUI distribution and forest fire history (fire ignitions and burned areas) types of territory appear with high levels of risk: high fire ignition density values and high wildfire density and high burned area ratio. Une modélisation du risque d'incendie est proposée de façon globale.

Assessing the risk of forest fires in wildland urban interfaces (WUIs) is crucial for wildfire prevention and land management. With the goal of developing an efficient management of fire risk in wildland urban interfaces in European Mediterranean countries, this chapter recommends methods and advices for the identification, characterization and mapping of WUIs as well as for the assessment of the fire hazard, the vulnerability and the damage potential of these areas. These tools are the result of scientific researches and fruit of past experiences analysis. More over this chapter insists on the interest of providing wildland urban interface maps in the purpose to know the real extent of theses areas and to manage their development. It briefly presents the steps of a method to identify, to characterize and to map WUI in European Mediterranean countries combining relevant criteria which are connected to the spatial organization of inhabitant dwellings and the structure of the vegetation. A WUI' typology is established. The method can be easily applied by land agencies or managers easily and is suitable both in large areas or landscape level (small scales) and in local conditions (large scale). Because of their high vulnerability, ignition probability and combustibility, it is important and efficient to focus risk assessment in the WUIs. The chapter brings a method to assess and to map fire hazard levels and vulnerability levels according to WUIs and their environment. Introducing the risk of fire and particularly the vulnerability of the territory with such maps is a way to make the inhabitants becoming aware of fire risk in WUI. This will globally decrease the risk of fire either by reducing fire propagation with biomass removal and or by reducing fire ignition probability together with less carelessness. Accomplishing this goal is strictly related to the designation of suitable prevention messages and preventive actions which can be different according to WUI types.

International audience; The description and modelling of the fuels provide useful information to be used in pre-fire planning and therefore to improve forest fire management plans. But fuels are complex and variable according to ecological and bio geographical factors. They are composed of vegetal material enabling fire ignition and fire propagation. They have many properties that determine fire behaviour, which make them difficult to characterize. The aims of this paper are (i) to provide a state of the art on the different methods to characterize fuel in the laboratory and in the field, (ii) to explain a method that has been developed in different countries (iii) to give some examples from different countries in the Mediterranean Basin. Different kinds of descriptions provide information on fuel at different scales, from micro to macrostructure. Field sampling and complementary laboratory work are stored in a fuel database and are used as input in the Firetec physical model. This modelling enables the assessment of fire behaviour such as rate of fire spread and fire intensity, according to fuel types. Fuel microstructure is described at the particle level, as for example with bulk density measured according to the particle size. The main parameters for fuel particle characterization have been measured using the same method in different countries: shape, surface area to volume ratio, mass to volume ratio, high calorific value, specific heat, ash content. Different species have been described in different countries. Fuel macrostructure is described at forest stand level or landscape level, according to type, composition, density, cover and height. This paper describes the different steps of a method to describe fuel for fire behaviour assessment and provides some examples coming from Mediterranean Countries.

La typologie du combustible est un outil utilisé par les gestionnaires des milieux naturels soumis aux incendies dans de nombreux pays et massifs subissant ce risque. Cet outil permet d'intégrer le comportement du feu dans la gestion des milieux et dans la planification, à l'échelle d'un massif forestier. Ces typologies caractérisent la répartition verticale et horizontale de la végétation, ainsi que sa biomasse, éléments déterminants du comportement du feu, en milieu naturel. Le Cemagref d'Aix-en Provence, sur la base de près de 150 descriptions de végétation situées en Basse Provence calcaire, a bâti une typologie des structures de végétation et a pu caractériser le comportement du feu, dans chacun des onze types de combustibles construits.

While most wildfire ignition points are aggregated at the vicinity of roads due to human-caused ignitions (Prométhée database), the probability of ignition and initial fire propagation at the interface between road and woodlands have rarely been studied. Vegetation at these interfaces includes dead fuels (litter) and live fuels (grasses and shrubs) which present specific features influencing ignition probability: composition, annual growth cycle, variation of moisture content. Moreover, vegetation is modified by management practices such as mowing and shrub clearing. We present here the results of ca. 900 lab burning experiments of small (18x20 cm) undisturbed vegetation samples combining five dominant vegetation types (graminae, dicots, pine litter, pine litter+ graminae, pine litter+ graminae+ shrubs), two management practices (mowed vs. unmowed vegetation), two modes of ignition (flaming vs. glowing standard wood cube), two wind speeds (3 vs. 10 km/h), and a wide range of fuel moisture content (fresh, air-dried and oven-dried). Results indicate clear differences of flammability variables (ignition probability, time to ignition, propagation) among the five vegetation facies. The combination of ignition mode and wind speed strongly affects the probability of ignition, with contrasted ignition efficiency according to vegetation facies. It also affects the propagation' and sustainability' of fire. Fuel moisture and vegetation types relate well to fire sustainability, propagation and intensity. Multiple and logistic regression were established between ignition probability and the major causal variables of ignition. These experimental data will help modelling fire hazard, especially by implementing a spatially-explicit simulator of fire ignition and initial propagation. The final aim is to help simulating management practices to reduce fire risk at interfaces., La plupart des points d'ignition d'incendies de forêts sont situés à proximité des réseaux routiers, du fait des activités humaines intenses, et pourtant les probabilités d'ignition et de propagation initiale des végétations typiques de ces interfaces (herbacées, litières, végétation débroussaillée...) sont mal connues. Nous présentons ici le résultat d'environ 900 brûlages expérimentaux d'échantillons de végétaiton non perturbés, combinant cinq faciès de végétation, deux types de modes d'ignition, deux vitesses de vent, trois niveaux d'humidité de la végétation et deux modes de gestion de la végétation (débroussaillée / non débroussaillée). Les résultats montrent des différences d'inflammabilité nettes entre les cinq faciès végétatux (probabilité d'ignition, délai et durée d'ignition, propagation). La combinaison du mode d'ignition et de la vitesse du vent modifient fortement ces variables, et l'humidité dans une moindre mesure. Des régressions logistiques et multiples ont permis d'établir des modèles prédictifs de l'ignition. Ces données expérimentales vont permettre de mieux connaître le risque d'incendie, et vont alimenter un simulateur d'ignition et de propagation initiale destiné à tester différents scénarios, et à réduire le risque dans ces interfaces.

Southern Europe. These fires arose in or spread to human habitats at the so-called wildland-urban interface (WUI). Within the conterminous United States alone, the WUI occupies just under 10 percent of the surface and contains almost 40 percent of all housing units. Recent dry spells associated with climate variability and climate change make the impact of such catastrophic fires a matter of urgency for decision makers, scientists and the general public. In order to explore the qualitative influence of the presence of houses on fire spread, we considered only uniform landscapes and fire spread as a simple percolation process, with given house densities d and vegetation flammabilities p. Wind, topography, fuel heterogeneities, firebrands and weather affect actual fire spread. The present theoretical results would therefore, need to be integrated into more detailed fire models before practical, quantitative applications of the present results. Our simple fire-spread model, along with housing and vegetation data, shows that fire-size probability distributions can be strongly modified by the density d and flammability of houses. We highlight a sharp transition zone in the parameter space of vegetation flammability p and house density d. The sharpness of this transition is related to the critical thresholds that arise in percolation theory for an infinite domain; it is their translation into our model's finite-area domain, which is a more realistic representation of actual fire landscapes. Many actual fire landscapes in the United States appear to have spreading properties close to this transition zone. Hence, and despite having neglected additional complexities, our idealized model's results indicate that more detailed models used for assessing fire risk in the WUI should integrate the density and flammability of houses in these areas. Furthermore, our results imply that fire proofing houses and their immediate surroundings within the WUI would not only

Assessing firerisk in wildland urban interfaces, where wildland and urbanization are in contact, is aim for preventing wildfire and mapping fire risk levels. The article presents a method allowing to characterize wildland urban interfaces types and to map them from SPOT 5 satellital imagery. The method uses remote sensing to product a good and up to date soil occupation map; it also uses ecological indices (diversity, aggregation) and GIS (density calculations of built areas, data combination). The typology so built of interfaces can be particularly useful for the fire fighters services to estimate fires ignition risks and the vulner-ability of every type and to pull the operational consequences, but also for the services of pre-vention to draw up prevention plans taking into account in a more precise way the specific problem of the wildland urban interfaces., Evaluer le risque d'incendie dans les interfaces habitat-forêt, zones où les espaces forestiers et urbains s'interpénètrent et forment des territoires plus ou moins complexes, est un objectif en matière de prévention des incendies de forêts et de cartographie des niveaux de risque. Among the recent developments, we can quote the accessibility to location data as GPS or the recent availability of data with metric resolution or submetric. These satellite data, as well as digital aerial data, can help estimating and mapping some of the forest fire risk parameters.; Le domaine des données d'origine spatiale est en évolution rapide. Parmi les récents développements, on peut citer l'accessibilité aux données de localisation de type GPS ou la disponibilité récente d'une imagerie spatiale à résolution métrique ou même submétrique. Ces données satellitaires, auxquelles on peut ajouter les données aériennes numériques, peuvent aider à estimer et à cartographier certains des paramètres du risque d'incendies de forêt.

The fire hazard intensity being essentially related to the relations between anthropic actions and natural environments. We examine on the one hand the nature of the bond between town planning and forest, and propose on the other hand methodological method for modeling these bonds. We show that knowledge of the phenomenon will be able to rest only on interdisciplinary approaches between sciences of nature and the social sciences., L'intensité du risque d`incendie étant par essence lié aux relations entre les actions anthropiques et les milieux naturels, nous examinons d'une part la nature du lien entre urbanisme et forêt, et proposons d'autre part des pistes méthodologiques pour modéliser les liens entre les deux milieux. Nous montrons que la connaissance du phénomène dans sa globalité ne pourra reposer que sur des approches interdisciplinaires entre les sciences de la nature et les sciences humaines.

Urban sprawl provides a model of competitive land use where anthropogenic dynamic and wildland dynamic conflict. It creates a threat at the wildland-urban interface, which affects biodiversity. So, we observe more and more wildfires at these interfaces. For example, In Southern France (region of Bouches-du-Rhône), since 1900, natural lands have been abandoned. Then, they have been colonized by forest species most of them very combustible like Pinus halepensis. Urban sprawl have reduced wildland around Marseille since 1960. Development of two crossed dynamics, urban and wildland ones, are making up a new wildland/urban interface. These interfaces are our subject of study, two questions being considered. Management of urban area ecology consequences: In part, urban pattern depends on choices of housing location. People choose their location according to practical reasons (transportation costs, job opportunities like in Marseille or Aix-en-Provence) and characteristics of area (beautiful landscape, green open spaces etc.). Analysis of urban dynamics needs to characterize forest amenities on interfaces. Moreover, urban pattern is linear or mosaic-like along wildland. This creates a growing fragmentation of this area. Our purpose is to determine the links between urban pattern and wildland communities at different scales. Preliminary results reveal disturbances along urban/wildland interface. Our spatial analysis has made possible a description of the structure of exurban landscape and of urban/wildland interfaces. Moreover results in economics show that residential location factors can be included in an economic model as landscape variables. Risk analysis: Interface vegetation usually consists in coniferous stands. However, vegetation constituting the underbrush has different characteristics, which are modified by human activities and urban patterns. Our purpose is to assess underbrush impact on fire vulnerability, i.e. on fire ignition and spread., L'étalement spatial des villes entraîne une concurrence d'usage du sol où les dynamiques anthropique et naturelle entrent en conflit. Ces nouveaux paysages, où se multiplient les contacts urbanisation/espaces naturels, affectent la diversité des milieux naturels et induisent un nombre croissant de départs de feux. Le département des Bouches-du-Rhône en est un exemple : depuis le début du siècle, de nombreuses terres agricoles ont été abandonnées. Celles-ci ont été progressivement enforestées. Les espèces colonisatrices, tel que le pin d'Alep (Pinus halepensis) possèdent souvent un fort pouvoir combustible. D'autre part, depuis 1960, nous observons un étalement spatial de l'urbanisation depuis le centre de Marseille sur les communes rurales alentours. La rencontre entre ces deux dynamiques croisées, urbaine et " naturelle ", a donné naissance à de nouveaux types de contacts et a accru les départs de feux. Ceci nous a conduit à étudier les interfaces entre espaces urbanisés et espaces forestiers, avec deux approches complémentaires. Aménagement du territoire et ses conséquences écologiques : les patrons d'urbanisation sont fonction des choix de localisation résidentielle. Les ménages choisissent un lieu pour résider, en fonction d'un certain nombre d'éléments inhérents à la structure du territoire (réseau de transport, pôles d'emplois, localisation des services publics,etc.), mais également en fonction de l'environnement naturel. L'étude des comportements résidentiels peut donc être un moyen de révéler les préférences individuelles pour un type d'environnement. Réciproquement, l'organisation de l'urbanisation sous forme linéaire aux abords des espaces " naturels " ou sous forme surfacique à l'intérieur des îlots forestiers modifie la structure du paysage, tendant à le fragmenter. L'objectif est de comprendre les liens entre patrons urbains et structure des communautés végétales à différentes échelles. Analyse du risque : les formations rencontrées au niveau des interfaces urbanisation/milieux naturels sont des formation en général préforestières. En sous-bois, elles présentent des fonctionnements de réponse aux perturbations liées aux activités anthropiques : ces perturbations semblent issues en partie de l'organisation de l'urbanisation. L'objectif est de mettre en évidence le rôle de ces formations de sous-bois dans la vulnérabilité, le départ et la propagation des incendies.

In the context of forest fire prevention, the Cemagref in Aix-en-Provence is developping, with remote sensing tools, a method of spatial analysis in cartography and characterization of the interfaces between wildland and urban areas. The aim of this study is to group zones having similar profiles with regard to fire risk exposure. The method described bellow was applied in south of France, in a very sensitive zone between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. In a first part, we improved a supervised classification on orthophotos. We obtained very precise land use map. Then we analysed this map in a contextual mode in order to be able to describe different kind of vegetation (height, sparse...). Then we improved spatial analysis tools in order to describe the spatial organisation of the land use and specially houses organisation inside or near the forest. We used some indicators belonging to landscape ecology (fragmentation, diversity, density...). Finally, better charaterization and automatic cartography of these interfaces should, in the long run, enable them to be charaterized with regard to fire risk by integrating them into a complete fire risk evaluation model, in order to develop preventive actions., Le Cemagref d'Aix-en-Provence développe une méthode d'analyse spatiale en vue de cartographier et de caractériser les interfaces habitat/forêt, dans l'objectif d'établir une typologie d'interfaces similaires du point de vue du risque d'incendie de forêt. La méthode a été appliquée dans le sud de la France, entre Aix-en-Provence et Marseille. Tout d'abord, une classification supervisée est appliquée sur des ortho-photos, ce qui fournit une cartographie très précise de l'occupation du sol. Ensuite, cette cartographie est analysée en mode contextuel de manière à caractériser différents types de végétation. Puis, des indicateurs issus de l'écologie du paysage sont utilisés pour décrire l'organisation spatiale de l'habitat en forêt (fragmentation, diversité, densité...). À long terme, une meilleure caractérisation et une cartographie automatique de ces interfaces pourra être obtenue en intégrant d'autres facteurs de risque tels que la pente, l'exposition et le vent. Ces types d'interfaces s'inscriront alors dans un modèle complet d'évaluation du risque, dans un objectif de prévention.

Urban sprawl provides a model of competitive land use where anthropogenic and wildland dynamics enter into conflict, creating a disturbance at the urban/wildland interface and thereby affecting the biodiversity. For example, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France, natural lands have gradually been abandoned since the early 1900s, to be colonized by easily combustible forest species such as Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis). Urban sprawl has been reducing the wildland around Marseille since 1960. The development of two sets of dynamics, urban and wildland, has created a new wildland/urban interface, which is the subject of our study. One consideration is how to manage the ecological consequences of urban areas. Urban patterns depend in part on how and where people choose their housing locations. Choices usually involve both practical criteria (transportation costs, job opportunities to be found in Marseille or Aix-en-Provence, etc.) and aesthetic criteria (attractive landscapes, open green spaces, etc.). An analysis of urban dynamics must characterize the forest amenities along the interfaces. The urban pattern is linear or mosaic-like along the interfaces, creating an increasing fragmentation of the area. Our purpose is to determine the linkages between the urban pattern and the wildland communities at different scales. Our preliminary results revealed disturbances along the urban/wildland interfaces. Through spatial analysis, we were able to describe the structure of the exurban landscape and of the urban/wildland interfaces. The economic results indicate that residential location factors can be included in an economic model as landscape variables. Further goals in our study are to explore the functional role of landscape pattern on phyto-diversity organisation and to determine the type of landscape that influences urban dynamics. Our hope is to model urban and wildland dynamics. We were able to analyse the factors influencing landscape dynamics using two different approaches (spatial economy and landscape ecology). The first stage required creating a typology of urban/wildland interfaces. In the second stage, analysing the reciprocal impact of the urban and wildland systems should allow us to come up with a development scenario for urban and wildland dynamics., L'accélération de l'étalement spatial des villes, observé au cours des 20 dernières années, impose la rencontre entre la dynamique anthropique et la dynamique de la végétation. L'agglomération marseillaise en est un exemple : en 20 ans, l'urbanisation s'est étendue sur les terres agricoles (pour beaucoup abandonnées) des communes avoisinantes. L'organisation de l'urbanisation sous forme linéaire aux abords des espaces "naturels" ou sous forme surfacique à l'intérieur des îlots forestiers structure nouvellement le paysage et tend à le fragmenter. Les conséquences de la fragmentation d'un milieu sont multiples. Elle réduit les flux d'espèces et de nutriments, favorise le développement des espèces de lisière et des espèces multi habitat et semble altérer la capacité de résilience des systèmes. Ces paysages sont donc le résultat d'une pression anthropique passée (évolution de friches agricoles par exemple) et actuelle qui façonnent ces milieux et dictent l'évolution des patrons paysagers. Dans ce cas, l'étude de la dynamique du paysage peut être appréhendée par la réciprocité relative entre dynamique urbaine et " naturelle ". S'il existe une relation entre la structure spatiale et l'organisation de la diversité, il est alors possible d'en déduire des lois d'organisation générales qui peuvent être formalisées par un modèle intégré de la dynamique urbaine et " naturelle ". Ceci est l'objectif d'un travail interdisciplinaire économie spatiale/écologie du paysage qui implique la mise en oeuvre une démarche méthodologique en fonction des approches économique et écologique par le biais de l'analyse conjointe de la structure spatiale. Pour cela, nous avons dans un premier temps, créé une typologie des interfaces urbanisation/espaces "naturels". Dans un second temps, l'analyse de l'influence réciproque des deux systèmes établis au préalable, doit nous permettre d'établir des scénarios d'évolution des interfaces urbanisation/espaces "naturels" et plus généralement une modélisation de la dynamique des paysages périurbains.

This scale has to allow to classify a posteriori any phenomenon forest fire arising on the french metropolitan territory and in the DOM-TOM according to its degree of intensity. The paper describe the way this scale was elaborated, no scale of existing intensity having benn listed in this domain. From an international bibliography and inquires with experts, the identificaation of some physical parameters of the fire and possible damages on some stakes was realized, the accessibility of data was also studied. The fire as a physical risk is rather well known. The complete knowledge of the risk requires now that the vulnerability with fire is studied. Knowledge concerning this question being relatively poor, we reflected, in this report requested by the ministry for ecology, with a methodological approach of the vulnerability. Three tracks are explored: insurances, land market and socio-economy of the firms. We end to the report that the conscience of the fire hazard is very thin and that the risk generates only little consequence material. It is thus difficult to justify heavy regulations (for example Risks zonings)., L'incendie en tant qu'aléa physique est assez bien connu. La connaissance complète du risque nécessite maintenant que soit étudiée la vulnérabilité au feu. Les connaissances concernant cette question étant relativement pauvre, nous avons réfléchi, dans ce rapport demandé par le ministère de l'écologie te du développement durable, à une approche méthodologique des vulnérabilité. Trois pistes sont explorées : les assurances, le marché foncier et la socio-économie des entreprises. Nous aboutissons au constat que la conscience du risque d'incendie est très ténue et que le risque ne génère que peu de conséquence matérielles. Il est donc difficile de justifier des régulations lourdes (par exemple au niveau des Plans de Prévention des Risques).

This communication propose a modeling method of the influences crossed between dynamic anthropic and natural. The tools of the geographical economy on the one hand and the ecology of the landscape on the other hand are mobilized., Cette communication tente de proposer une méthode de modélisation des influences croisées entre dynamiques anthropique et naturelles. Les outils de l'économie géographique d'une part et de l'écologie du paysage d'autre part sont mobilisés.

The study financed by the Ministry of Ecology and sustainable Development aims at determining an intensity scale for the forest fire hazard which should enable to classify any forest fire a posteriori, occurring on the French Metropolitan Territory as well as in the Overseas Departments according to its intensity level. The article presents how a first prototype was elaborated, considering that no existing intensity scale has been registered in this area. From an international bibliography and surveys done by experts, the identification of some physical fire parameters and possible damages on types of stakes was performed; the accessibility of aimed data was also studied. The prototype is presented in the form of a table, in which the va-lues of the physical parameters as well as the corresponding damages on specific stakes are summed up for each of the six defined levels., L'étude financée par le ministère de l'Ecologie et du Développement durable a pour but de produire une échelle d'intensité pour les incendies de forêt capable de classer tout feu a posteriori ayant eu lieu en France métropolitaine comme dans les départements d'Outre Mer selon des niveaux d'intensité. A partir d'une recherche bibliographique internationale et d'enquêtes auprès d'experts, l'identification de quelques paramètres de feu physiques et de dommages observés sur un certain nombre d'enjeux a été réalisée; l'accessibilité des données visées a été aussi évaluée. In the mediterranean area, 10 000 to 60 000 ha of natural field are burnt every year. As a result, it is a permanent threat for goods and persons safety and for natural resources protection. So fire hazard prevention remains an important objective for the local communities, the State and the European Commission in the mediterranean countries. In this context, the team « Forest Fire protection » of the Cemagref of Aix-en-Provence, developped a spatial analysis method to estimate forest fire hazard on the Maures Mountains (Var Department). The objective was to establish a cartography of the areas of same sensibility to fire. The change to a more accurate evaluation and cartography (particularly at the scale of the Risk prevention Plans) leads to questionning the implementation details of this method. The method proposed here proceeds in three steps, qualifying and mapping the areas of ignition, the areas of initial propagation of fire and the areas of free propagation. For each step, we make some hypothesis. The factors retained at the Mountain scale are analysed at the scale of 1/10 000. Some factors are combined in intermediate indices: that is the case for the cetor combination of wind and relief. Limits are determined from experts knowledge and litterature. Those limits correspond to different hazard levels. The results take the form of a determining key. A cartographic example is given after simulation on a Geographic information System., En région méditerranéenne française, 10 000 à 60 000 ha d'espaces naturels sont parcourus annuellement par le feu. Il en résulte une menace permanente pour la sécurité des biens et des personnes ainsi que pour la préservation du patrimoine naturel. La prévention du risque d'incendie de forêt reste donc un objectif prioritaire des collectivités locales, de l'État et de l'Union européenne en région méditerranéenne. Dans ce contexte, l'équipe Protection des forêts contre les incendies du Cemagref d'Aix-en-Provence a développé une méthode d'analyse spatiale de l'aléa incendie de forêt sur l'ensemble du massif des Maures (département du Var). L'objectif était d'établir une cartographie des zones d'égale sensibilité au feu. Le passage à une évaluation et une cartographie plus précise (en particulier à l'échelle des Plans de prévention des risques) pose la question des modalités d'application de cette méthode. La méthode proposée ici procède en trois étapes, en qualifiant et cartographiant les zones de départs de feu, les zones de propagation initiale du feu et les zones de propagation libre. Pour chacune de ces étapes, un certain nombre d'hypothèses sont formulées. Les facteurs retenus à l'échelle du massif sont analysés à l'échelle du 1/10 000ème. Certains facteurs ont été combinés en indices intermédiaires ; c'est le cas de la combinaison vectorielle du vent et du relief. Des seuils ont ensuite été déterminés à dires d'expert et à partir de la littérature. Ces seuils correspondent à des niveaux d'aléa différents. Les résultats se présentent sous la forme d'une clé de détermination des niveaux d'aléa. Un exemple cartographique est donné à partir d'une simulation sur Système d'information géographique.
