Abstract

Coviability of Social and Ecological Systems: Reconnecting Mankind to the Biosphere in an Era of Global Change comprises two volumes and forty-three chapters totaling about 900 pages. The book is prefaced by an economist and concluded by an ecologist; its postscript is written by a socio-anthropologist. A hundred researchers, belonging to more than twenty disciplines, contributed to its development; and this under the direction, in full interdisciplinarity, of twelve co-editors. Before closing the book, it is necessary to clarify the main point, rather than offer an inaccessible summary. At this stage, it is important to identify the significance of this scientific paradigm of coviability, especially in an international context confronted with an ecological imperative. The book seeks to draw from the set of works an initial definition of the paradigm of coviability. This goal's point of departure is the plural definitions and disciplines, the heterogeneous works giving space for reflection. This new paradigm of socio-ecological coviability offers an ecological transition promoted at the global, national and local scales. An integrative paradigm is suggested to counter the dominant naturalistic paradigm. The goal of this paradigm is "living in harmony with nature," that is, creating harmony between humans and nonhumans. The challenge consists of breaking free from a reductive anthropocentrism in order to integrate an ontology open to a socio-ecological dimension, with the goal of reconnecting humanity to the biosphere. The diversity of the situations approached by the different research teams makes it possible to test a definition of socio-ecological coviability that may be: a property of interactive dependence between humans and nonhumans joined in a relationship that is contained by regulations and constraints. This relationship establishes a link of viability subjected to an integration threshold of the complex human/nonhuman system determining the limits of coviability's elasticity, whose realization remains the coevolution in an integrated socio-ecological system. The legal and political formalization of the coviability paradigm is designed to contribute to the ecological transition by establishing a new general Principle that could reposition the goal of sustainable development in terms of viability.

Abstract

International audience; In this chapter, the authors use the methodology presented in Chapter 2 to develop a system that manages the spreading of organic waste on agricultural parcels. The proposed method uses a process of iterative and incremental development. Two complete iterations of the development process are presented starting from the analysis model and ending with the code produced by the case-tools Structured query language code generator. The first iteration deals with the description of territory objects and the second one deals with the business objects used in the context of the spreading of organic waste. As a result of transformations applied, models are enriched with new concepts and, therefore, are more complex. The growing complexity of the model may negatively affect an actor's understanding, which may become an impediment by slowing down the analysis phase. The authors show how the software development process model, a modeling artifact associated with the continuous integration unified process method, avoids the apparent complexity of the model and improves productivity.

Abstract

International audience; In the majority of research today in areas such as evaluation of flood risks, management of organic waste as it applies to plants, and mapping ecological conditions of rivers, scientific advances are often aimed toward the development of new software or the modification of existing software. One of the particulars for software developed for agricultural or environmental fields is that this software manages geographic information. The amount of geographic information has greatly increased over the past 20 years. Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have been designed to store this information and use it to calculate indicators and to create maps to facilitate the presentation and the appropriation of the information. Often, the development of these GISs is a long and very hard process. Since the early 1970 s, in order to help project managers, software development processes have been designed and applied. These development processes have also been used for GIS developments. In this chapter, the authors present a new methodology to realize GIS more easily and more interactively. This methodology is based on model transformations, a concept introduced by the Object Management Group (OMG) in its approach called model driven architecture (MDA). When software is developed, models are often used to improve the communication between users, stakeholders, and designers. The changes of a model can be seen as a process where each action (capture of user concepts, modification of concepts, removal of concepts, etc.) transforms the model. In the MDA approach, the OMG recommends automation of these actions using model transformations. The authors have developed a complete set of model transformations that enable one to ensure the evolution of a GIS model from the analysis phase to the implementation phase.

Abstract

The authors have defined a rapid prototyping, iterative and incremental method usable for executable generation. The benefit of this approach is to obtain end-user feedbacks in situ. The authors were led to define a model structure, called MDA Architecture, composed of a root model and three sub-models : analyse, PIM et PSM. A cloning technique with traceability and conditionally properties carries out transitions between sub-models. A traceability architecture "orthogonal" at the previous one, created and managed by the cloning technique, maintains the three sub-models in coherence., Les auteurs ont défini une méthode de prototypage rapide itérative et incrémentale applicable pour la production d'exécutables. L'intérêt de cette approche est de recueillir les réactions in situ des acteurs du domaine. Les auteurs ont été conduits à définir une structure de modèles, désignée par Architecture MDA, constituée d'un modèle racine et de trois sous-modèles : analyse, PIM et PSM. Une transformation de clonage munie des propriétés de traçabilité et de conditionnalité réalise les transitions entre sous-modèles. Une architecture de traçabilité "orthogonale" à la précédente, engendrée et gérée par la transformation de clonage, maintient les trois sousmodèles en cohérence.

The core components of this system are a metadata service, a data base of geographic reference features and a thematic vocabulary co-elaborated by all the partners. This system must help analysis and comprehension of coastal zone systems components and process., Dans le cadre d'un projet pluridisciplinaire relatif à la gestion intégrée des zones côtières (GIZC), nous proposons un système d'intégration et de diffusion de l'information et de la connaissance. L'infrastructure proposée repose sur un service de métadonnées couplé à des référentiels thématique et géographique. A terme ce système doit aider à l'analyse et à la compréhension des phénomènes sous-jacents à la GIZC.

Abstract

The Syscolag's program (LAGoonal and COastal SYStems) in LanguedocRoussillon area (LR) aims to contribute to the integrated management of coastal area (IMCA) by promoting pluridisciplinary research : its outputs should improve the decision making process. The Computer Sciences project presented in this paper focuses on the integrated aspect of information management by setting up a service to share and exchange information. The control of the semantic used in the field of IMCA is a key issue. The research teams involved in this project choosed to tackle in priority the geographic dimension of information since it covers broad thematic fields and it brings a solution for interdisciplinary vocabularies problems. The central component of the system is a metadata service which combinés a description of the resources using the ISO 19115 standard adapted to the field of IMCA in LR as well as additional semantic control for the thematic and geographic dimensions. Therefore, final users have at their disposal a thematic and geographic ontology to retrieve relevant information in a more efcient and natural way., Le projet Syscolag (SYStèmes CÔtiers et LAGunaires) en Languedoc-Roussillon (LR) souhaite favoriser la gestion intégrée de la zone côtière (GIZC) et pour cela promeut la recherche pluridisciplinaire dont les apports pourront faciliter la prise de décision des gestionnaires. Le volet informatique présenté ici cherche d aider l'aspect intégré de la gestion de l'information en élaborant un service de partage et mutualisation d'information. La maîtrise des K sémantiques » sous-jacentes y joue un rôle pivot. Les équipes scientifiques diverses ont choisi de mettre en exergue prioritairement l'aspect spatial de l'information car celui-ci a l'avantage d'intervenir dans des champs thématiques très larges et permet de s'affranchir en partie des problèmes de terminologie interdisciplinaires. Le maillon essentiel du système est un service de K métadonnées », au sens large, alliant un ensemble d'éléments descriptifs des ressources (basé sur la norme ISO 19115 et adapté au contexte spécifique) et des descriptions sémantiques contrôlées relatives aux thématiques concernées et à la perception de l'espace. Abstract

Les concepteurs d'applications SIG sont confrontés aux problèmes de conception et de réalisation informatique d`applications complexes. S`ils disposent actuellement d'une panoplie de méthodes orientées objets relatives à l`analyse et à la conception des systèmes d`information et plus spécifiquement à celles des SIG, force est de constater qu`ils sont cependant encore assez démunis face aux développements pratiques. Notre proposition porte sur un outil d`aide au développement d`applications SIG qui s`appuie sur la démarche MDA. Notre objectif est de permettre la réutilisation de patrons de conception dédiés aux SIG et d`assurer la traçabilité des modèles créés au cours du cycle de vie de l`application. La proposition sera présentée de la façon suivante : en section 2 et 3, nous décrivons brièvement les spécificités du domaine SIG qui sous-tendent les patrons de conception utilisés et les éléments de modélisation UML supportant les concepts SIG. La section 4 définit la méthodologie utilisée inspirée directement des grandes étapes de la démarche MDA. La section 5 présente l`outil implémenté dans l`Atelier de Génie Logiciel Objecteering et la section 6 conclut le propos.
