Abstract

This work is focused on the recycling of natural rubber industry waste by means of thermo-mechanical devulcanization. With that aim, tests were carried out in an industrial twin-screw extruder, at different barrel temperatures, ranging from 80 to 220 °C. The extrusion was done with a screw profile specifically designed for the devulcanization process. The extent and quality of devulcanization were evaluated through the measurements of crosslink density, soluble fraction and Mooney viscosity, and by using the Horikx diagram. Results showed that a high degree of reclaiming (˜90%) was obtained, independently of the barrel temperature. The samples with the best devulcanization quality, i.e. the samples with a more selective sulfur bond scission, were found to be those treated at a lower input temperature. This was explained by the effect of the rubber homogenous self-heating which contributes to the local increase of the material temperature, during the devulcanization process. Moreover, it was found that the properties of the devulcanized rubber/virgin rubber blends were not significantly affected by the addition of the treated rubber. Results suggest that the entire natural rubber industry waste could be recycled into new competitive products, with low energy consumption. This would present a real contribution to the industrial recycling and thus a noticeable improvement of the environment.

Abstract

International audience; Elephant seals, Mirounga spp., are highly dimorphic, having different energetic requirements according to age and sex, and foraging in various ecological and oceanographic contexts. Resource partitioning has been shown for the sub‐Antarctic populations of southern elephant seals, M. leonina, where colonies are surrounded by narrow shelves that deepen abruptly. In contrast, seals from Península Valdés (Argentina), in the northernmost extent of the breeding range, face an extended, shallow, temperate, and productive continental shelf. We integrated tracking data from 98 animals (juveniles and adults, males and females) gathered over more than two decades, and found that although all available habitats were used, individuals segregated by age and sex. Juvenile males favored shelf habitats, whereas subadult and adult males also used the shelf break. Juvenile females preferred the shelf and the more distant Argentine Basin used by postbreeding and postmolt adult females. Males showed the highest proportion of area‐restricted search locations, suggesting more spatially concentrated feeding activity, and likely reflecting a preference for foraging habitat and prey. Our results are consistent with those from other populations, implying that elephant seals show remarkable similarities in habitat use by age and sex classes, despite broad differences in the offshore habitats between sub‐Antarctic and temperate ecosystems.

Abstract

Seabirds are amongst the most globally-threatened of all groups of birds, and conservation issues specific to albatrosses (Diomedeidae) and large petrels (Procellaria spp. and giant petrels Macronectes spp.) led to drafting of the multi-lateral Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP). Here we review the taxonomy, breeding and foraging distributions, population status and trends, threats and priorities for the 29 species covered by ACAP. Nineteen (66%) are listed as threatened by IUCN, and 11 (38%) are declining. Most have extensive at-sea distributions, and the greatest threat is incidental mortality (bycatch) in industrial pelagic or demersal longline, trawl or artisanal fisheries, often in both national and international waters. Mitigation measures are available that reduce bycatch in most types of fisheries, but some management bodies are yet to make these mandatory, levels of implementation and monitoring of compliance are often inadequate, and there are insufficient observer programmes collecting robust data on bycatch rates. Intentional take, pollution (including plastic ingestion), and threats at colonies affect fewer species than bycatch; however, the impacts of disease (mainly avian cholera) and of predation by introduced species, including feral cats (Felis catus), rats (Rattus spp.) and house mice (Mus musculus), are severe for some breeding populations. Although major progress has been made in recent years in reducing bycatch rates and in controlling or eradicating pests at breeding sites, unless conservation efforts are intensified, the future prospects of many species of albatrosses and large petrels will remain bleak. Abstract

International audience; Temperate-type, summer-active cool-season perennial grasses are frequently exposed to dry spells during the warm season due to the high atmospheric demand and fast soil desiccation. Since water availability is essential for sward nitrogen (N) uptake and most mineral N is located in the topsoil, water stress may hinder sward N nutrition if it reduces N supply. In hydro-halomorphic soils, imbalances between soil N supply and sward N demand during summer could be further aggravated by, first, the limited water holding capacity of the topsoil, and second, potential availability of water from deep, N-poor soil horizons that are kept moist by a shallow water table. The aim of this work was to quantify the effect of N and water availability on N status and productivity of temperate-type perennial swards growing in a hydro-halomorphic soil of the Flooding Pampa. During two consecutive years, shoot and root dynamics, as well as radiation capture, N nutrition index (NNI), soil water availability and leaf water potential were followed over six weeks long mid-summer regrowths of old stands (> 9 years) of temperate-type tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.] sown on a typical Natraqualf soil in Balcarce, Argentina. Swards were either rainfed or irrigated and fertilized with either 40 or 200 kg de N ha(-1). Root systems were large (5.8-9.3 Mg DM roots ha(-1)), but concentrated mostly in the 0.2 m topsoil (66%-75% of root biomass or length). Despite invariably high available water below 0.4 m throughout both experimental periods, rainfed swards faced transient episodes of water stress whenever the upper soil layer dried out. Tall fescue swards were strongly co-limited by water and N during summer, showing comparable, very high responses to both N addition and irrigation. Further, forage yield showed synergistic increases when swards received both supplemental water and N simultaneously. This was mainly due to consistent synergistic responses in radiation use efficiency and leaf lifespan. Sward NNI was depressed only by an historically severe drought but was not altered when water stress intensity was lower, close to average for the season in the area. Therefore, the major causes of typically low summer productivity of temperate-type tall fescue growing in hydro-halomorphic soils of the Flooding Pampa are the intrinsic effects of low N and low water availability, with only uncommonly extreme water stress episodes reducing yield indirectly through an aggravation of crop N status.

Abstract

International audience; Many biotic and abiotic stressors impact bees' health, acting as immunosupressors and contribute to colony losses. Thus, the importance of studying the immune response of honey bees is central to develop new strategies aiming to enhance bees' fitness to confront the threats affecting them. If a pathogen breaches the physical and chemical barriers, honey bees can protect themselves from infection with cellular and humoral immune responses which represent a second line of defense. Through a series of correlative studies we have previously reported that abscisic acid (ABA) and nitric oxide (NO) share roles in the same immune defenses of Apis mellifera (A. mellifera). Here we show results supporting that the supplementation of bee larvae's diet reared in vitro with L-Arginine (precursor of NO) or ABA enhanced the immune activation of the granulocytes in response to wounding and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection.

International audience; There is no completely objective science nor impersonal research (Alemany y Sevilla Guzmán, 2009). All research and innovation are related to interests that aim to impose a certain world view (Bourdieu, 1990; Santos, 1995; Sormani, 1974). Nevertheless, the different ways under which scientific knowledge is produced may make it more or less available to the “other”. The way dialogue is established between science and indigenous and local knowledge may make research results more relevant from a social standpoint. To discuss this matter, we ask ourselves how researchers can effectively contribute to building a society more innovative and equitable. We mobilize the viewpoints of farmers, extension agents and researchers to try to figure out how they understand agricultural research, what do they expect from it and how they see their own role in it. Interviews made in south-east Buenos Aires province, Argentina, show a big gap between public agricultural research and extension and farmers' reality. It is mainly private business selling inputs and equipment which are close to farmers, filling their needs and transmiting to them agricultural innovations. To try to bridge the gap between farmers and public agricultural research and extension, it is essential to create mechanisms that facilitate a closer contact between the different actors, as well as to make research evaluation more sensitive to the production of knowledge that is relevant to farmers.; Partimos de que no hay ciencia objetiva o a-política, ni tampoco asepsia en la investigación (Alemany y Sevilla Guzmán, 2009). Toda investigación e innovación responde a intereses particulares y estos se refieren a una forma de imponer poder (Bourdieu, 1990; Santos, 1995; Sormani 1974). Lo que está en duda en esta relación son las formas en cómo se plantea la producción de este conocimiento (Alemany y Sevilla Guzmán, 2009). La forma adoptada ayudará su valoración por parte del “otro”. El nivel de diálogo entre el conocimiento científico y el saber popular puede ayudar a que las respuestas de investigación finalmente sean socialmente más significativas. Para trabajar este tema nos preguntamos qué aportes podemos hacer como investigadores y cómo deberíamos realizarlos para contribuir a la construcción de una sociedad más equitativa e innovadora. Para esto partimos desde las ideas de los productores, extensionistas e investigadores y nos planteamos comprender qué entienden ellos por investigación, qué esperan de ella y cuál creen que debería ser su rol en este proceso.Es notoria la desarticulación entre la investigación con la extensión y la realidad de los productores. La investigación aplicada debería estar conectada con el medio rural. En esto damos un lugar central a los productores y extensionistas, más allá del rol de las empresas privadas y del Estado. Esté último, también central para definir cómo marcar el rumbo de la investigación. Selon la forme adoptée les connaissances produites peuvent être plus ou moins valorisées par « l'autre ». Le niveau de dialogue entre connaissance scientifique et savoir populaire peut aider à ce que les retombées de la recherche soient plus significatives du point de vue social. Pour traiter ce thème, nous nous demandons quels sont les apports que nous pouvons faire en tant que chercheurs afin de contribuer à la construction d'une société plus équitable et innovante. Ainsi, nous partons des points de vue des agriculteurs, agents de développement et chercheurs pour essayer de comprendre ce que signifie pour eux la recherche, ce qu'ils en attendent et quelle est leur opinion sur leur propre rôle dans ce processus. Les enquêtes menées dans le sud-est de la province argentinede Buenos Aires, révèlent une grande distance entre l’activité de recherche et de développement, d'une part, et la réalité desagriculteurs d'autre part. La recherche agricole et les services de développement rural dans cette région apparaissent en effet peu connectés aux besoins des agriculteurs. Ces derniers entretiennent une relation plus étroite avec les entreprises privées d'intrants et d’équipement agricole, qui répondent à leurs besoins et leur proposent des innovations. Pour dépasser ces problèmes, il faut d'abord créer des mécanismes assurant le rapprochement entre les différents acteurs, et garantir quel'évaluation de la recherche prenne en compte ses retombées pour les agriculteurs.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on sunflower as an oilseed model and bread wheat as a cereal model. It includes comparisons with other species to emphasize similarities and differences with these model crops. The rationale for the use of these model species is threefold. Research on model species has proven useful in other areas of knowledge, for example, Arabidopsis thaliana and rice as models for dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants in genetics, respectively. Grain oil and protein, major storage compounds in sunflower and wheat are important in human and animal diets and increasingly important for nonfood uses. The knowledge of quality aspects in these two species is sufficient to allow for meaningful quantitative models that capture major genetic, environmental, and G × E effects. This chapter comprises three main parts. It briefly reviews the effects of environmental, genetic, and G × E factors on grain oil and protein concentration and composition. Then it outlines the process-based crop models accounting for grain yield in both species and for concentration and composition of oil (sunflower) and protein (wheat). Finally, it uses a combination of modeling and experiments to analyze the relationships between quality traits and yield, and management and breeding strategies for the improvement of grain quality.

Abstract

International Altimetry Team., In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion., At the forefront of this support, we must obviously mention the space agencies CNES, ESA and NASA which have played and still play a decisive role in the development and launch of several prominent altimetry missions from the outset. Other agencies such as DLR, EUMETSAT, ISRO, NOAA, NSOAS and organizations such as CMEMS, also contribute significantly to developments in all forms of altimetry.
