Most mirror-image stimulation studies (MIS) have been conducted on social and diurnal animals in order to explore self-recognition, social responses, and personality traits. Small, nocturnal mammals are difficult to study in the wild and are under-represented in experimental behavioral studies. In this pilot study, we explored the behavioral reaction of a small nocturnal solitary forager—the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus)—an emergent animal model in captivity. We assessed whether MIS can be used to detect a repeatable behavioral reaction, whether individuals will present a similar reaction toward a conspecific and the mirror, and whether males and females respond similarly. We tested 12 individuals (six males and six females) twice in three different contexts: with a mirror, with a live conspecific, and with a white board as a neutral control. We detected significant repeatability for the activity component of the behavioral reaction. There was a significant effect of the context and the interaction between presentation context and sex for avoidance during the first session for males but not for females. Males avoided the mirror more than they avoided a live conspecific. This pilot study opens a discussion on the behavioral differences between males and females regarding social interactions and reproduction in the nocturnal solitary species, and suggests that males are more sensitive to context of stimulation than females.

International audience; La forêt de Kibale, située à l’Ouest de l’Ouganda, a successivement incarné un refuge de ressources cynégétiques et forestières puis de biodiversité. Lors de la succession des royaumes Tooro (1700-1962), elle était sous autorité royale puis coloniale. Au cours des années 1970, elle est devenue un espace ressource pour l’exploitation du bois et un refuge économique pour certaines familles qui y ont implanté des jardins vivriers en périphérie. Les hommes pouvaient aussi y pratiquer des rituels sacrés. Suite au classement en parc national (PNK, 1993), les hommes ont été exclus de cet espace forestier. Ils vivent concentrés dans les villages situés alentours et la forêt est toujours habitée par des esprits selon eux. Quant au parc, il abrite l'une des plus fortes biomasses de primates au monde, parmi lesquels des espèces en danger, notamment les chimpanzés - Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii. La zone de Sebitoli, située au nord du PNK, est un cul de sac de forêt protégée. Nos travaux (Sebitoli Chimpanzee Project - SCP; Bortolamiol, 2014) en retracent l’histoire et les fonctions changeantes au cours du temps. La zone de Sebitoli est composée de forêt dégradée et en régénération (70 %), héritage de sa fonction économique passée. Malgré la fragmentation du paysage, les chimpanzés y sont particulièrement nombreux (3,2 individus/km2) et profitent de la densité et de la diversité des Ficus - favorisées par l’exploitation forestière ancienne - et de la proximité avec les cultures agricoles voisines. Les territoires végétaux, animaux et humains se superposent et ils sont transcendés par un territoire immatériel (croyances, esprits) malgré des discontinuités juridiques et matérielles entre les territoires (forestiers, protégés versus habités).

International audience; A species, especially when it is endangered and surrounded by anthropogenic elements, can bethreatened by habitat fragmentation. Food resource availability in the species’ usual or surrogate habitats mayreinforce or decrease its use of certain areas. Our objective was to to determine the influence of natural andanthropogenic variables on spatial distribution of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii). Wefirst determined the home range of a wild chimpanzee community (hereafter Sebitoli ChimpanzeeCommunity [SCC]) based on global positioning system (GPS) point locations (n¼2,586 direct observationsand feces locations) collected between 2009 and 2013 in Sebitoli, Kibale National Park, Uganda. Wedescribed SCC home range using grid cells (2,959 cells of 100m100m) referencing environmental, spatial,and topographical variables (n¼15). We then determined diet and food species abundance within theirterritory (n¼63 vegetation plots and 18 months phenological survey) and predicted distribution of the10 most foraged fruit species within SCC home range, using environmental, spatial, and topographicalvariables (n¼10) by applying a maximum entropy model (maxent). We then predicted chimpanzee presenceas a function of environmental, spatial, and topographical variables (n¼15) using the maxent model andassessed its truthfulness with the kernel model, based only on GPS point locations. Chimpanzees in Sebitoliwere mostly observed in a core area of 5.42 km2 within the 25-km2 home range. They did not avoid forestedges in contact with human populations, especially males who used larger core areas than females. Factorswith the greatest positive impact on the chimpanzee distribution model (maxent area under the curve[AUC]¼0.907) were related to 3 different food resources: 1) proximity to forest edges considered asattractive because of presence of crops cultivated by local farmers; 2) proximity to a tarmac road that crossesthe SCC home range with shoulders covered by attractive terrestrial herbaceous vegetation; and 3) presenceof wild forest fruiting resources. The results obtained with the maxent predictive model, applied on a finescale, were consistent with the kernel model, based on real observations. Therefore, such an approach may berecommended for surveys or action plans interested in sustainable management of wildlife in ananthropogenic environment and may be a useful tool to better understand parameters of a prefered zone foran endangered species.

National audience; La proximité entre hommes et animaux sauvages, favorisée par l'anthropisation croissante des milieux, contribue à renouveler le débat sur le statut des espèces animales. Celui-ci est fonction des menaces qui pèsent sur la survie d'une espèce et de l'appréciation des populations. Dans le parc national de Kibale (Ouganda), les animaux sauvages protégés (chimpanzés Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii, éléphants Loxodonta africana), sortent parfois de la forêt pour piller les jardins avoisinants alors que l'accès de la forêt est interdit aux populations humaines. Dans certaines villes européennes, et dans une moindre mesure dans l'Est parisien, la présence du renard (Vulpes vulpes) est observée hors des territoires ruraux. Jusqu'à récemment, l'espèce était considérée comme nuisible en Ile-de-France.Notre étude des territoires de chaque espèce (humaine et non-humaine) autant que les statuts et les représentations qui leur sont associés (Sebitoli : 42 entretiens semi-directifs, Paris : une centaine de questionnaires) tente de mieux cerner les enjeux de la coexistence des animaux et des hommes par une mise en regard de ces deux cas d’étude contrastés.

International audience; Habituation is the term used to describe acceptance by wild animals of a human observer as a neutral element in their environment. Among primates, the process takes from a few days for Galago spp. to several years for African apes. There are also intraspecies differences reflecting differences in habitat, home range, and ape-human relationship history. Here, we present the first study of the process of bonobo habituation in a fragmented habitat, a forest-savanna mosaic in the community-based conservation area led by the Congolese nongovernmental organization Mbou-Mon-Tour, Democratic Republic of the Congo. In this area, local people use the forest almost every day for traditional activities but avoid bonobos because of a traditional taboo. Because very few flight reactions were observed during habituation, we focused on quantitative parameters to assess the development of ape tolerance and of the tracking efficiency of observer teams. During the 18-month study period (May 2012-October 2013), 4043 h (319 days) were spent in the forest and bonobos were observed for a total of 405 h (196 contacts on 134 days). The average contact duration was stable over time (124 min), but the minimal distance during a contact decreased with habituation effort. Moreover, bonobo location and tracking efficiency, daily ratio of contact time to habituation effort, and the number of observations at ground level were positively correlated with habituation effort. Our observations suggest that bonobos become habituated relatively rapidly. These results are discussed in relation to the habitat type, ape species, and the local sociocultural context of villagers. The habituation process involves changes in ape behavior toward observers and also more complex interactions concerning the ecosystem, including the building of an efficient local team. Before starting a habituation process, knowledge of the human sociocultural context is essential to assess the balance between risks and benefits.

International audience; There is a diverse range of community-based conservation projects, from a top-down process with projects initiated by national and international institutions to a bottom-up process based on trial and error. In every conservation project, new actors appear, new messages are spread, and each person takes these messages in their own way. As a part of an interdisciplinary study focused on the interactions between bonobos (Pan paniscus), habitats and humans in a community-based conservation area initiated and led by the Congolese NGO Mbou-Mon-tour in the Bolobo Territory (Democratic Republic of Congo), we analyzed the evolution of the local status of bonobos: bonobos as animals with relevance to legal regimes, economic activities, and ecological research and education. Locally, the MMT conservation project has sought to bolster a waning taboo on the eating of bonobos, complementing it with on bonobos and has strengthened it with national and international laws on bonobo protection. Bonobos are thus central to new rules and norms, including the creation of community defined protected forests. Secondly, whereas bonobos were previously widely seen as negative or unnecessary -because not eaten and associated to a bad omen- they are now considered as a driving force for local development. Finally, the interactions between the different actors (local people, conservationists, scientists…) imply a hybridization of traditional and scientific knowledge, contributing to the evolution of the knowledge of each actor. These preliminary results are probably a sign of deeper changes. Our implication in the conservation project and the development of a long-term study site focused on bonobos constitute challenges for the further analysis of the role played by the different actors. In the future, a study by a conservation anthropologist would allow to complete this first analysis and permit a better understanding of the places of conflicts and of collaborations as regards this conservation projec; Alors que la place des populations locales dans la conservation de l’environnement est largement étudiée et discutée, en pratique l’expression « conservation-communautaire » regroupe une multitude de projets allant d’une dynamique top-down institutionnalisée à une dynamique bottom-up fonctionnant par essai-erreur. Avec la conservation, de nouveaux acteurs apparaissent, des messages diffusent, chacun s’appropriant les idées circulantes à sa manière. Dans le cadre d’une étude interdisciplinaire centrée sur les interactions entre bonobos, humains et habitats dans un espace de conservation communautaire initiée par l’ONG locale Mbou-Mon-Tour dans le Territoire de Bolobo (République Démocratique du Congo), nous nous sommes intéressés aux évolutions du statut du bonobo, animal de normes (au sens de règles édictées par des autorités publiques), animal support de développement économique et animal objet de savoirs locaux et scientifiques. Alors que le respect de l’interdit alimentaire local s’amenuisait, le projet de conservation communautaire a renforcé cet interdit en associant à la coutume locale – le bonobo est un humain ayant fui en forêt en raison de dettes impayées, il est porteur de malchance – les lois nationales et internationales et en créant localement de nouvelles normes (forêts de protections communautaires). La conservation du bonobo est utilisée en tant que moteur de développement. Le bonobo efface ses dettes vis-à-vis de la communauté humaine et devient porteur d’un espoir local, « le diamant de Bolobo ». Les interactions entre les différents acteurs entraînent aussi une hybridation des savoirs locaux et scientifiques, participant à l’évolution des savoirs des uns et des autres. Ces résultats préliminaires concernant les modifications des statuts du bonobo sont probablement un des signes de changements plus profonds. Notre implication locale, à la fois dans la conservation et dans la recherche scientifique centrée sur le bonobo rend difficile une analyse plus poussée des jeux d’acteurs. En revanche, dans la suite, une étude par un anthropologue de la conservation permettrait de compléter cette première analyse pour faire ressortir les lieux de conflits et de tensions ainsi que les lieux de collaborations engendrés par cette dynamique de conservation.
