1. Mapping potential release areas and runout distances of rock slopes failures at regional scale to identify hotspots for hazard assessment

Abstract

High mountains environments are highly affected by the effects of climate change. The main impacts of rising air temperature on the Alpine cryosphere are glacier retreat and permafrost degradation, which lead to rock slopes instabilities. Investigations in the Europeans Alps have shown an increase of rock slope failures, especially during summer heatwaves. These events can provoke cascading hazards like debris flows threatening human lives and infrastructure, which underlines the need of knowledge about their triggering mechanism and propagation. Conform the GAPHAZ guidelines for hazard assessment (GAPHAZ, 2017), the aims of this study are (i) to propose a mapping approach of susceptible release areas of rock slope failures and resulting runout distances at a regional scale (105 km2) and (ii) to identify hotspots for hazard assessment.To do so, we used an inventory containing 1172 rock slope failures events with volumes larger than 102 m3 recorded in the Mont Blanc massif between 2007 and 2019. A statistical analysis of this database revealed the distribution of the rock slope failures according to the topographical conditions (slope) and the permafrost conditions (Mean Annual Rock Surface Temperatures) that are most favourable to their triggering. These conditions are used in a multi-criteria GIS approach to identify the potential unstable slopes at a regional scale.Then, the potential release area maps are used as input to map the propagation of potential events, using a model based on a normalised area dependant energy line principle (NELA). The calibration of the NELA model was done with 3630 alpine wide rockfall events covering all possible volumes. The validation of the modelled propagation was based on 70 events from the Mont Blanc database.In a next step, the resulting maps of release and propagation areas will be intersected with human assets (mountaineering routes, high mountain infrastructure, tourism areas) and lakes (that can provoke cascading hazards) in order to identify areas which could be impacted by rock slope failure related hazards at a regional scale.This work is a first step to point out hot spots where more detailed analyses will be required to evaluate the possible risks.

International audience; High mountain environments of the European Alps have been increasingly affected by rockfalls (V > 100 m3) over the past decades, in conjunction with the atmospheric warming and the resulting permafrost degradation. These processes, and their potential cascading effects, constitute a threat for population and infrastructure, especially in the frequented massifs such as those of the French Alps.The aim of this study is to characterize the distribution and propagation of rockfalls in order to map the potential release and deposit areas in the French Alps. To do so, we used a rockfalls database (>1000 events) that occurred in the Mont Blanc massif during the period 2007-2020. From this dataset, we analyze the topography and permafrost conditions the most prone to trigger a rockfall, considering the altitude, orientation, slope and MARST (Mean Annual Rock Surface Temperature) mapped with a statistical model. The topographic profile of rockfalls for which we know the precise deposit location is deeply analyzed to characterize the runout path according to the volume of the events. These results are then used to map potential release and deposit areas with a multicriteria approach in a GIS. These maps, combined with infrastructure or mountaineering routes, could be used to point out “hot spots” where more detailed analysis would be required to estimate the possible risks.This work aims to provide a baseline for future researches and for decision makers in short- and long-term planning to anticipate rockfall hazards at present and in the near future.

International audience; Permafrost-affected rockwalls can suffer from mechanical fatigue related to thermo-cryogenic processes. However, these processes, the rock slope kinematics, and the links between both remain largely unclear. This study reports five years of crackmeter measurements at 2-hours resolution from six of the main perennially ice-filled rock clefts at the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m a.s.l., Mont Blanc massif). Seasonal and inter-annual variations as well as response of fracture kinematics to thermo-cryogenic process are analyzed.

Abstract

Rockfalls and rock avalanches are active processes, including hazards for infrastructures and outdoor activities.Present rockfalls are well surveyed and documented in the Mont Blanc massif thanks to a network of observersset up in 2007, and composed of hut keepers, mountain guides, alpinists and infrastructure workers. Frequencyover the past 150 years of massif rockfall, studied by comparison of historical photographs, has strongly increasedduring the last 30 years, especially during very hot summer (2003 and 2015), likely due to permafrost degradationdriven by the climate change.In order to understand at a longer timescale the relationship between rockfall frequency and climate dynamicsin the Mont Blanc massif, we use Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide (TCN) dating to obtain the exposure ages ofLateglacial and Holocene rockfall scars and old rockwall surfaces, and glacial and climate proxies to verify thehypothesis that rockfalls were more frequent in warm periods.55 samples have been collected at 9 sites of the Glacier du Géant basin, at elevation in the range 3300-3800 m a.s.l.These new exposure ages were completed by the 25 others TCN ages sampled during two previous campaigns andrecalculated using the newest input parameters. A total of 72 ages were obtained, between 0.04 ± 0.02 and 100.50± 8.50 ka.We found four age clusters. Two clusters are related to the Holocene Warm Period (∼ 6.1-7.4 ka) and RomanWarm Period (∼ 1.6-2.3 ka); a cluster of LIA-post-LIA ages is mainly composed by smaller rockfalls, consideredas the ‘normal’ erosion. A forth cluster have been recognized at ∼ 4.2-5.0 ka.Data suggest a relationship between the reflectance spectral data of the scar surfaces and exposure ages, mainlyin the E-SE-S aspects. Fresh rock surfaces of recent rockfall scars are light grey, whereas long-time exposedweathered rock surfaces range from light orange to dark red. This confirms the initial hypothesis: the redder a rocksurface, the older its age. Reflectance spectroscopy is used to quantify the granite surface colour and allow theestablishment of a robust relationship between scar exposure ages and colour of the rockwalls in the Mont Blancmassif.

Abstract

Reconstruction of past glacier fluctuations is an important step towards the comprehension of glacier responseto past and future climate changes. Moraine deposits and roches moutonnées represent univocal geomorphicmarkers of advanced glacier extensions, and their dating using in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides is a valuableapproach for better constraining past glacier behavior.To better understand the past glacier fluctuations in the European Alps, this study focuses on the Argentièreglacier, located on the north-western flank of the Mont-Blanc massif (MBM) in the Western Alps, and hostingsome of the largest European glaciers. Here, gemorphological analysis and new 10Be exposure ages obtained frommoraine boulders and roches moutonnées surfaces on the left-lateral side of the Argentière glacier are presented.The exposure ages of the investigated roches moutonnées suggest that the Early Holocene deglaciation in thestudied area started around 11 ka ago. The adjacent lateral moraines indicate that the glacier oscillated at leastthree times during the subsequent millennium. Afterwards, around 10 ka ago, it retreated within the Little Ice Age(LIA) limits represented by the largest moraine. The geometry and proximity of these Early Holocene and LIAmoraines suggest that the glacier had nearly the same thickness at roughly 2200 m a.s.l. during those two periods.The obtained chronology is in agreement with several other studies in the western and central parts of the Alps,implying that throughout the Alps, glacier behavior was synchronous at the beginning of the Holocene. Based onthese data and additional 10Be exposure ages obtained from Argentière glacier frontal moraines located almost 2.5km outboard of the LIA terminus, we will present potential climate scenarios for the studied periods in comparisonwith the LIA and the present. Furthermore, the influence of local factors versus regional and hemispheric climatedrivers responsible for the observed glacier fluctuations will be discussed

Abstract

Poster; Dirty ice areas of patchy and discontinuous debris typically occur above the limit of continuous supraglacialdebris cover, and are important both as regions of high melt rates and as the locus of the identified increase indebris cover. Dirty ice ablation is spatially highly variable, and debris thicknesses straddle the effective thicknessthreshold separating enhanced and reduced ablation. The melt response is therefore very sensitive to small changesin debris thickness and extent in this zone. Despite this no previous study has sought to directly quantify ablationdynamics over an area of dirty ice. This may be due to the unsuitability of traditional point ablation stakes whichcannot capture the likely spatial variation in ablation. The Østrem curve which relates debris thickness to ablationhas been well-established by plot based field experiments, although only recently have models been able toreplicate the peak of the curve. However, modelling has suggested that a similar peak in ablation can be achievedby altering the percentage debris cover, although as yet this has not been substantiated with field measurements.Indeed, the existence of very thin, uniform debris layers is questionable, and a discontinuous debris cover is muchmore likely.We present a novel approach to determine distributed ablation, based on photogrammetric processing of re-peat UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) imagery, involving correcting the second digital elevation model for thehorizontal glacier velocity field, downslope ice movement and the emergence velocity. A high-resolution (approx.0.04 m x 0.04 m) spatially continuous ablation map was created for a one-month period over a 2.7 ha dirty-ice areaon Miage Glacier (Italy). It provides unique insights into ablation beneath continuous and discontinuous debris.We identify several processes that affect surface melt at the local scale, including melt foci along sub-debrisdrainage routes, stream enlargement, and sliding of large clasts. We are able to quantify the ablation for a givenpercentage debris cover and identify the peak in ablation associated with moderate percentage covers. Evolutionof the debris is investigated by detecting change in percentage debris cover between images. Methods are alsodeveloped to link ground-truthed data on debris albedo and clast depth to the UAV imagery, allowing spatialextrapolation of these variables in preparation for future modelling.

Abstract

Poster; International audience; Snow bridges that form over the crevasses of the Alpine glaciers allow mountaineers and skiers to cross them easily but constitute an important danger in case of rupture. Between 2008 and 2014, 37 injured persons and 13 deaths related to falls into crevasse were recorded (i.e. an average of two deaths per year) on the glaciers of the French side of the Mont Blanc massif - out of the famous Vallée Blanche ski route, which however embodies an important part of the aid related to falls into crevasses. To understand the construction and evolution of these fragile structures, instrumentation was set up on the Glacier du Géant, at 3450 m a.s.l., near the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m a.s.l.), on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif, close to a crevasse whose bridge had recently collapsed over a length of 37 m. The maximum width of the crevasse in this area is 6 m. At the top of a 7-m-high pole - to prevent future snowfalls -, sensors have been installed in September 2016 to measure different snow and weather parameters: air temperature, wind speed and direction, snow height. An automatic camera surveys the crevasse and the snow bridge geometry. Several other sensors monitor the temperature of snow and air in the crevasse. In addition, an extensometer was installed into the crevasse to measure the evolution of its width. The results of the first 6 months of survey are presented, including the formation of the bridge in mid-November, during a period of snowfall associated with a strong wind. Although the instrumentation is well suited to the high mountain conditions, its maintenance is delicate due to the strong instability of the environment (glacier movements and extreme weather conditions, primarily) but the results of this work will bring new glaciological knowledges which should participate in a better safety on glaciers.

Abstract

Rockfalls and rock avalanches are active processes in the Mont Blanc massif, with infrastructure and alpinists at risk. Thanks to a network of observers (hut keepers, mountain guides, alpinists) set up in 2007 present rockfalls are well surveyed and documented. Rockfall frequency over the past 150 years has been studied by comparison of historical photographs, showing that it strongly increased during the three last decades, especially during hot periods like the summer of 2003 and 2015, due to permafrost degradation driven by the climate change. In order to decipher the possible relationship between rockfall occurrence and the warmest periods of the Lateglacial and the Holocene, we start to study the morphodynamics of some selected high-elevated (>3000 m a.s.l.) rockwalls of the massif on a long timescale. Contrary to low altitude, deglaciated sites where study of large rockfall deposits allows to quantify frequency and magnitude of the process, rockfalls that detached from high-elevated rockwalls are no more noticeable as debris were absorbed and evacuated by the glaciers. Therefore, our study focuses on the rockfall scars. Their 10Be dating gives us the rock surface exposure age from present to far beyond the Last Glacial Maximum, interpreted as the rockfall ages. TCN dating of rockfalls has been carried out at the Aiguille du Midi in 2007 (Boehlert et al., 2008), and three other sites in the Mont Blanc massif in 2011 (Gallach et al., submitted). Here we present a new data set of rockfall dating carried out in 2015 that improves the 2007 and 2011 data. Furthermore, a relationship between the colour of the Mont Blanc granite and its exposure age has been shown: fresh rock surface is light grey (e.g. in recent rockfall scars) whereas weathered rock surface is in the range grey to orange/red: the redder a rock surface, the older its age. Poster; On January 9, 2016 at 4:57, inhabitants of the municipality of Entremont-le-Vieux were awakened by the sound ofa large rock collapse detached from the Mont Granier (1933 m, Savoie, France), iconic mountain of the Chartreusemassif located between Chambery and Grenoble. Its north face, a 900-m-high natural geological cross section inUrgonian limestone, Hauterivian marls, Valanginian limestone and Berriasian marls, was affected in 1248 by ahuge collapse (500 million m3) that caused hundreds of fatalities.The SW pillar, shaped in the upper Urgonian limestone, climbed for the first time in 1964 and several times duringthe warm and dry autumn 2015, collapsed throughout its height (180 m) over a width of up to about 85 m witha volume certainly much higher than 100,000 m3. Blocks rolled down the western slope on about 700 m beforestopping in the forest. It is now notched over a hundred meter wide. No infrastructure was affected.The Granier has many predispositions to large instabilities. This is the western remaining part, largely fractured, ofa much eroded perched syncline whose inclination is oriented to the east. Fracturing and orientation of the stratacontributes to pre-cut limestone and marl. The Granier is also a major karstic area: the Granier plateau with itsmultilevel karst network (90 km of galleries explored) is a good model of polyphased karst network. The region isalso frequently affected by small earthquakes but seismicity does not appear to be a triggering factor. Conversely,the collapse has produced an M 2.2 earthquake. Besides rock fatigue related to what has just been mentioned anda vertical or overhanging topography, it is likely that heavy rains of days before the event and after a long periodof drought have unleashed the destabilization.The collapse is not comparable to the historical event of 1248, which had reshaped the entire northern side.However, its dimensions make the January 2016 event one of the major events of recent decades in the limestonewestern Alps. Events of this size are very rare in the currently available rockfall data series.There is now a significant residual risk of falling boulders while a large overhang just formed suggests probablecollapses in the short or medium term, with volumes exceeding 10,000 m3.

Poster; International audience; The legislation regarding the programs of Italian school on the topic of climate change is very deficient. This project is intended to be a didactic tool to deal with this subject - especially with regard to its effects on glaciers - using a specific methodology. Only recently climate change has been mentioned in the programs for the High School (DPR 89, 2010), but no precise indications are given for contents, time and extent in the scheduling, even though a higher level of integration between subjects and topics is aimed for. The aim of this research is to investigate how an innovative approach, which puts in contact research and schools, may allow to improve the knowledge about climate change and glaciers, especially for students living in alpine areas. The experimentation, which is part of a PhD project, will also allow to produce didactic materials and a questionnaire aimed at increasing awareness on climate among students in Italian schools

Abstract

Under the effects of climate change, Alpine mountainous regions are undergoing fast and well-perceptible evolutions, which are attracting the growing attention of people, scientists and managers. To cope better with the hazards and vulnerabilities specific to these territories, the current national and European public policies in the Alpine countries now prescribe adapting natural hazard prevention to climate change. This paper provides a review of recent advances in knowledge on the perceived, measured and projected changes in i) climate patterns, ii) the cryosphere, hydrosystems and geomorphological dynamics on Alpine slopes, and iii) natural hazard evolution and induced risks at the scale of the French Alps. We give a brief overview of new results achieved by research, cooperation and capitalisation projects in these thematic fields during the programme period 2007-2013, which are available on databases, thematic knowledge platforms and observatories developed by different scientific and technical operators in the larger framework of the European Alpine arc. We illustrate this renewed synthesis by published examples of hydro-gravitational hazard activity chronicles, along with climate patterns identified as “predictors”., Sous l’effet des changements climatiques, les territoires de montagne alpins enregistrent des évolutions rapides et manifestes qui suscitent l’attention croissante des populations, des scientifiques et des gestionnaires. Pour mieux faire face aux aléas et aux vulnérabilités spécifiques à ces territoires, l’adaptation de la prévention des risques naturels aux changements climatiques est aujourd’hui prescrite par les politiques publiques nationales et communautaires en vigueur dans l’arc alpin. Cet article passe en revue les progrès récents dans la connaissance des changements perçus, mesurés et projetés à l’échelle des Alpes françaises dans 1) les paramètres climatiques, 2) la cryosphère, les hydrosystèmes et la morphodynamique des versants, 3) les aléas naturels et 4) les risques induits. Cette synthèse renouvelée fournit un aperçu des résultats des projets de recherche, de coopération et de capitalisation sur ces thématiques, acquis pour la plupart au cours de la période de programmation 2007-2013, en s’appuyant sur des bases de données et plates-formes de connaissances développées par différents opérateurs scientifiques et techniques dans le cadre de l’arc alpin. Elle est illustrée par une méta-analyse d’exemples déjà publiés de chroniques d’activité d’aléas hydro-gravitaires, accompagnées des paramètres climatiques identifiés comme « prédicteurs ».

This article aims to introduce the research presented in this volume of the Collection EDYTEM. The different papers comefrom a common scientific meeting between soil scientists of the French Soil Science Society (AFES) and organic geochemists ofFROG. These articles seem to indicate a renewal of the approaches, issues and methods of study on the evolution of soil linkedwith human activities. Soil geochemistry and sediments (particularly organic geochemistry) appears as an indispensable tool toreveal the history of soil and human practices in the Anthropocene., Le présent article se propose de mettre en perspective les travaux de recherche présentés dans ce volume de la CollectionEDYTEM. Fruit d’une rencontre scientifique entre pédologues de l’AFES et géochimistes de FROG, ces articles nous semblenttémoigner d’un renouveau des approches, des questions et des méthodes d’étude sur l’évolution des sols en lien avec les activitéshumaines. International audience; The chapter looks mainly at massive rock slope failures that generate high-speed, long-runout rock avalanches onto glaciers in high mountains, from subpolar through tropical latitudes. Drastic modifications of mountain landscapes and destructive impacts occur, and initiate other, longer-term hazards. Worst-case calamities are where mass flows continue into inhabited areas below the glaciers. Travel over glaciers can change landslide dynamics and amplify the speed and length of runout. Conversely, landslide material deposited onto ice modifies glacier behavior, protecting ice from ablation, usually causing advances and hugely increasing glacier sediment delivery. Hitherto, recognition of the risks associated with these processes has been compromised by observational difficulties and theoretical disagreements, lack of evidence in many re-gions and widespread misclassification of rock avalanche deposits as moraines. The latter has also compromised glacial sequences and risk scenarios. We emphasize the need for improved understanding of processes and diagnostics, as prelude to risk assessments, including the roles of earthquakes and climate change. 9.1 INTRODUCTION Landslide processes that affect glaciers range from small rockfalls and snow avalanches to massive rock slope failures and deep-seated gravitational creep 1 . The more frequent, smaller events may have a significant role as they affect virtually all mountain glaciers seasonally every year. Abstract

Rockglaciers are the most prominent features of alp ine permafrost. They are creeping accumulations of debris, moving usually at rates of cm/yr or dm/yr. The observed changes on rock glacier dynamics are all related to velocity changes, and show in most cases an increase in velocity. Depending on the importance of the velocity increas e, the five following types of reaction can be distinguished: * Moderate positive and negative velocity changes, re lated to changes of MAGST with a time lag of one to two years. * Acceleration of rock glacier displacement, with opening of crevasses on the rock glacier surface. * Rupture and dislocation of the lower part of rock g laciers: in several cases, the lower part of the rock glacier starts to move significantly more than the upper part. * Total collapse of the lower part of the rock glacier: the lower part of the rock glacier breaks down as a debris flow and is totally removed * Very strong acceleration of the rock glacier: the a cceleration speeds up to very high values. One case is known so far, were velocities reached values as high as 80 m/yr ! The expected effects of velocity changes can be eit her local and limited to the rockglacier surface, or affect the downslope area : * Veloctiy increase will induce increased damage to i nfrastructures built on rockglaciers. * Strong acceleration will increase the surface instability, and the formation of scarps can lead to local rockfall hazard on the rockglacier surface. * Velocity increase will induce increased rockfall ac tivity on the rockglacier front, as well as a progression of the front. * Partial or total rupture and collapse can occur in a few cases, and threaten potentially large areas downslope. * Where rockglacier fronts are overhanging steep slopes or torrential catchments, secondary processes mobilizing the released debris can induce an increased hazard downslope. The following recommendations can be made in order to reduce hazard due to rockglaciers : * Infrastructures on rockglaciers should be avoided. * The zones in front of active rockglaciers should be avoided. * If the front of an active rockglacier is overhanging a steep slope, a security zone should be observed downslope of the rockglacier, with conside ration of potential direct and indirect processes like rockfalls and debris flows. * Paths and trails crossing rockglaciers or passing in front of rockglaciers should be regularly checked for security.
