Bioactive glass has high biocompatibility and bioactivity. With specific ion adding, it can show different advantages. Titanium ion can improve the mechanic strength, antibacterial ability of bioactive glass, and stability. In this study, bioactive glass with titanium ion doping by the sol-gel method via various reactive environments was fabricated successfully. The morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical composition was measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). By soaking in SBF, the bioactivity of samples had also been analyzed. The formula of bioglass has been optimized to make the better bioactivity.

This study Development a high-speed data acquisition (DAQ) device by using AD9226 analog-to-digital converters, a field programmable gate array, and an ARM Cortex-A8 microprocessor for a self-designed synchronous 6-channel high-speed DAQ card that was able to transmit data to a computer through its network interface. Its cost was approximately 10% that of a commercial model, the National Instruments PXI-5105, and thus overcame the prohibitively high cost of commercial DAQ cards. A high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) was used to measure three types of typical partial discharge (PD) in self-made models to compare the performance of the self-designed DAQ card and that of the National Instruments PXI-5105. The HFCT signals were converted into three-dimensional PD patterns, and mean discharge was chosen as the feature to be extracted for the application of extension theory in the recognition of discharge models. The results revealed that the self-designed DAQ card was comparable to the commercial model in the recognition of high-frequency PD signals. Given the high price of commercial high-speed DAQ devices, the self-designed DAQ card was deemed to have considerable advantages in cost and expandability.

This study was aimed to develop a simple, fast, and reliable technique to detect fluoroquinolones (FQs)-conjugated bovine serum albumin (BSA). Four tested FQs, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, danofloxacin, and orbifloxacin, were conjugated with BSA by following the N-hydroxysuccinimide ester method. The technique was designed according to the different absorption characteristics of the FQs and BSA; FQs can be detected by both UV and fluorescence detectors, but BSA can only be detected by UV. The results demonstrated that the developed method was efficient in detecting FQs-BSA conjugates. In addition, the method not only trace the FQs and BSA conjugation responses but also can be used to estimate the level of FQs-BSA conjugation. Therefore, this technique is a valuable tool for the detection drug-carrier-conjugated antigens, especially for FQs-BSA-conjugates during the production of anti-FQs monoclonal antibodies.

In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s logistics industry and urban service industry, electric bicycles have gradually become an important means of transportation in cities due to their flexibility, green technology, and low operating costs. Because electric bicycles travel though motor vehicle lanes and nonmotor vehicle lanes, the conflict between motor and nonmotor vehicles has become increasingly prominent, and the safety situation is not optimistic. However, most theories and models of mixed traffic flow are based on motor vehicles and bicycles and few involve electric bicycles. To explore the traffic safety situation in an urban mixed traffic environment, this paper first uses cellular automata (CA) to establish a three-strand mixed traffic flow model of motor vehicles, electric bicycles, and bicycles and verifies the reliability of the model by using a MATLAB simulation based on the actual survey data. Then, using the technology of traffic conflicts and the conflict rate as the index to evaluate the traffic safety situation, the change in the conflict rate with different road occupancies and different proportional coefficients of motor vehicles is studied. In the end, the conflict rate is compared between the mixed traffic flow and the setting of a physical isolation divider, which provides some suggestions on when to set a physical isolation divider to separate motor vehicles from nonmotor vehicles. The results show that in a mixed traffic environment, the conflict rate first increases and then decreases with increasing road occupancy and reaches a peak when the road occupancy is 0.6. In addition, in mixed traffic environments, the conflict rate increases with an increasing proportional coefficient of the motor vehicle. When the road occupancy rate is within the range of [0.6, 0.9] or when the proportional coefficient of motor vehicle is between [0.8, 0.9], a physical isolation divider can be set to separate motor vehicles and nonmotor vehicles from the space to improve traffic safety.

A method of high-heating-rate thermal reduction is used to produce porous graphene nanosheets (PGNSs). This material is characterized by a unique holey structure, which is suitable for ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte. To study the effects of electrolyte anion, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfony)imide (EMI-TFSI) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (EMI-FSI) ILs are used. Due to the smaller size of FSI−, EMI-FSI shows a higher conductivity and lower viscosity than those of EMI-TFSI. The specific capacitances of PGNS electrodes are 90 and 260 F g−1, respectively, measured in EMI-TFSI and EMI-FSI ILs at a potential scan rate of 50 mV s−1. The PGNS symmetric cell with EMI-FSI electrolyte is able to deliver a maximum energy and power densities of 110 Wh kg−1 and 101 kW kg−1, respectively, with a cell voltage of 3.5 V. In addition, 85% of the initial capacity can be retained after 2000 charge–discharge cycles.

Quantum dots (QDs) are used in the bio-medical area because of their excellent optical properties. Their biomedical utilization has remained a serious biosecurity concern. Cytotoxicity experiments have shown that QD toxicity is connected to the properties of the QDs. In this paper, the toxicity of QDs was studied from the aspect of surface functional groups at the mitochondrial level. Three types of ligands, thioglycollic acid (TGA), mercaptoethylamine (MEA) and l-cysteine (l-Cys), which have similar structures but different functional groups were used to coat CdTe QDs. The effects of the three types of CdTe QDs on mitochondria were then observed. The experimental results showed the three types of CdTe QDs could impair mitochondrial respiration, destroy membrane potential and induce mitochondrial swelling. Interestingly, MEA-CdTe QDs showed similar effects on membrane potential and mitochondrial swelling as did l-Cys-CdTe QDs, while TGA-CdTe QDs showed stronger effects than that of the two other QDs. Moreover, the three types of CdTe QDs showed significantly different effects on mitochondrial membrane fluidity. MEA-CdTe QDs decreased mitochondrial membrane fluidity, l-Cys-CdTe QDs showed no obvious influence on mitochondrial membrane fluidity and TGA-CdTe QDs increased mitochondrial membrane fluidity. The interaction mechanism of CdTe QDs on mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pores as well as Cd(2+) release by CdTe QDs were checked to determine the reason for their different effects on mitochondria. The results showed that the impact of the three types of CdTe QDs on mitochondria was not only related to the released metal ion, but also to their interaction with MPT pore proteins. This work emphasizes the importance of surface functional groups in the behavior of CdTe QDs at the sub-cellular level.

Bio-absorbable Zn alloys have been attractive replacements for the traditionally permanent implants due to their reasonable mechanical strength and elongation, degradation rate, and biocompatibility. The hybridization addition of Mg and Ag elements could greatly improve the mechanical properties and antibacterial ability of Zn, respectively. In the present paper, in vivo biocompatibility for the Zn-0.05Mg-(0, 0.5, 1 wt%) Ag implants in New Zealand rabbit was qualitatively evaluated during the implantation periods of 4, 12, and 24 weeks. The blood serum biochemical parameters and in vivo integrity of the implants in the live rabbits were monitored by using clinical chemistry analyzing and X-ray radiographic imaging techniques during the implantation process, respectively. There is no great difference in the serum biochemical indicator between the implanted rabbits and the control group. Especially the levels of serum Zn and serum Mg normalize after implantation of 24 weeks. The interfacial adherence between the implants and newly formed bones, and the histopathological morphology of heart, liver, and kidney were observed morphologically under the microscope. The new bones formed and grew surrounding the implants after 12 weeks' post-operation, which were well joined with the original cortical bones after post-implantation of 24 weeks. The heart, liver and kidney were not negatively influenced as evidenced from the serum biochemical indicators and morphologies of the tissues. Zn-0.05Mg-(0, 0.5, 1 wt%) Ag alloys are proved to be in vivo biocompatible and potential candidates for the biodegradable medical implants.

This paper proposes and presents the experimental demonstration of 320-Gb/s free-space optical (FSO) communication based on dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) technology and afocal scheme. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first one that adopts DWDM technology and afocal scheme to successfully demonstrate 50-m/320-Gb/s FSO communication. Results show that the free-space transmission distance is greatly increased by the afocal scheme and that the free-space transmission rate is significantly enhanced by the DWDM technology. DWDM FSO communication over a 50-m free-space link with a total transmission rate of 320 Gb/s $(40\;\text{Gb/s}/\lambda \times 8\lambda=320\;\text{Gb/s})$ is achieved. With the aid of a low-noise amplifier and clock/data recovery at the receiving site, good bit-error-rate (BER) performance and clear eye diagram are obtained at a 50-m/320-Gb/s operation. Such 50-m/320-Gb/s DWDM FSO communication provides the advantages of optical wireless communications for long transmission distance and high transmission rate, which is thoroughly useful for long-haul and high-speed light-based WiFi (LiFi) applications.

Fiber-wireless and fiber-invisible laser light communication (IVLLC) convergences that adopt the Mach–Zehnder modulator-optoelectronic oscillator (MZM-OEO)-based broadband light source for microwave (MW)/millimeter-wave (MMW)/baseband (BB) signal transmission are proposed and demonstrated. For downlink transmission, light is optically promoted from 15- and 25-GHz radio-frequency (RF) signals to 10-Gb/s/30-GHz MW, 15-Gb/s/50-GHz MMW, 20-Gb/s/60-GHz MMW, and 25-Gb/s/100-GHz MMW data signals based on fiber-wireless and fiber-IVLLC integrations. Bit error rate (BER) performs efficiently in the 40-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and the 10-m RF/25-m optical wireless transport scenarios. For uplink transmission, downstream light is successfully intensity-modulated with a 25-Gb/s BB data stream based on fiber-IVLLC integration. BER performs efficiently in the 40-km SMF and the 100-m optical wireless transport scenario. Such a hybrid MW/MMW/BB lightwave transmission system is an attractive alternative. It is shown to be a prominent one to present advancements in integrating fiber backbone and radio-frequency (RF)/optical wireless feeder networks.

We investigate the discharge and flow characterizations of a double-side siding discharge plasma actuator driven by different polarities of direct current (DC) voltage. The discharge tests show that sliding discharge and extended discharge are filamentary discharge. The irregular current pulse of sliding discharge fluctuates obviously in the first half cycle, ultimately expands the discharge channel. The instantaneous power and average power consumptions of sliding discharge are larger than those of the extended discharge and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The flow characteristics measured by a high-frequency particle-image-velocimetry system together with high-speed schlieren technology show that the opposite jet at the bias DC electrode is induced by sliding discharge, which causes a bulge structure in the discharge channel. The bias DC electrode can deflect the direction of the induced jet, then modifying the properties of the boundary layer. Extended discharge can accelerate the velocity of the starting vortex, improving the horizontal velocity profile by 203%. The momentum growth caused by extended discharge has the largest peak value and the fastest growth rate, compared with sliding discharge and DBD. However, the momentum growth of sliding discharge lasts longer in the whole pulsed cycle, indicating that sliding discharge can also inject more momentum.

Bioactive glass (BG) was made by the sol&ndash, gel method and doped with boron (B) to increase its bioactivity. Microstructures of BG and B-doped BG were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and phase identification was performed using an X-ray diffraction diffractometer. The ion concentrations released after soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1, 4, and 7 days were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the pH value of the SBF was measured after soaking samples to determine the variation in the environment. Brunauer&ndash, Emmett&ndash, Teller (BET) analysis was performed to further verify the characteristics of mesoporous structures. High performance liquid chromatography was used to evaluate the drug delivery ability of teicoplanin. Results demonstrated that B-doped BG performed significantly better than BG in parameters assessed by the BET analysis. B-doped BG has nanopores and more rough structures, which is advantageous for drug delivery as there are more porous structures available for drug adsorption. Moreover, B-doped BG was shown to be effective for keeping pH values stable and releasing B ions during soaking in SBF. The cumulative release of teicoplanin from BG and B-doped BG reached 20.09% and 3.17% on the first day, respectively. The drug release gradually slowed, reaching 29.43% and 4.83% after 7 days, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed bioactive glass has potential as a drug delivery system.

Photovoltaic effects in poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) have attracted much attention recently. Here, natively p-type doped P3HT nanofibers and n-type doped zinc tin oxide (ZTO) nanowires are used for making not only field-effect transistors (FETs) but also p-n nanoscale diodes. The hybrid P3HT/ZTO p-n heterojunction shows applications in many directions, and it also facilitates the investigation of photoelectrons and photovoltaic effects on the nanoscale. As for applications, the heterojunction device shows a simultaneously high on/off ratio of n- and p-type FETs, gatable p-n junction diodes, tristate buffer devices, gatable photodetectors, and gatable solar cells. On the other hand, P3HT nanofibers are taken as a photoactive layer and the role played by the p-n heterojunction in the photoelectric and photovoltaic effects is investigated. It is found that the hybrid P3HT/ZTO p-n heterojunction assists in increasing photocurrents and enhancing photovoltaic effects. Through the controllable gating of the heterojunction, we can discuss the background mechanisms of photocurrent generation and photovoltaic energy harvesting.

It is important for oral and maxillofacial surgeons to repair craniofacial defects on oral cancer patients or patients with congenital problems. Thus, it is a challenge to develop biomaterials that promote bone regeneration as potential materials for bone repair. This work is devoted to the fabrication of bioceramics composed of silica and titanium oxide with various concentrations of titanium oxide for developing bone repair materials for dentistry and tissue engineering. The silica-based bioceramics were synthesized using the sol&ndash, gel method, and titanium oxide was added from the hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition was measured using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and the crystal structure was identified by using an X-ray diffraction diffractometer. The pH value and ion concentrations released in simulated body fluids after immersion with bioceramic samples were measured using a pH meter and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, respectively. In the cell toxicity test, the human osteosarcoma cells (MG63) were used and quantitatively assessed using an MTT assay. The results showed that the proposed bioceramics can be controlled by tuning the Si/Ti ratio to modify the dissolution rate of samples and enhance the formation of apatite. Compared to Dulbecco&rsquo, s modified Eagle&rsquo, s medium (DMEM) groups, the cell number of the BG_Ti75 group can be increased to 120%. Furthermore, BG_Ti75 can promote MG63 cell growth with statistical significance and keep the pH value and the released calcium ion concentrations of the soaking environment stable. The proposed bioceramics show potential for bone-regenerating capability.

A 150 m/280 Gbps free-space optical (FSO) link based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO)-based broadband light source (BLS), afocal telescopes, and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)/space-division-multiplexing (SDM) convergence is proposed. Experimental results show that the transmission distance of FSO links is significantly increased by afocal telescopes, and the transmission rate of FSO links is greatly enhanced by WDM and SDM convergence. With the aid of a low noise amplifier and clock/data recovery, good bit error rate performance and a clear eye diagram are achieved at 150 m/280 Gbps operation. This proposed 150 m/280 Gbps WDM/SDM FSO link is shown to be a prominent alternative not only because of its advancement of indoor FSO communications but also because of the advantages of optical wireless communications for a long transmission distance and high transmission rate.

A 100m/40Gbps 680-nm VCSEL-based LiFi transmission system employing three-stage injection-locked technique and doublet lens scheme is proposed. With the assistance of LNA and CDR, low BER of < 10−9 at 100m/40Gbps operation is obtained.

The silicon-wire, surrounded by bimetallic layers of silver and gold, demonstrates surface plasmon interference with TM/TE enhanced sensitivity of 2873-nm per refractive-index-unit, 6 times and 15% better than the top gold film and an additional silicon layer embedded in silicon, respectively.

Gold nanostructures were formed when Au nanolayers were deposited on native-oxide-covered Si substrates and annealed. To analyze the annealing temperature dependent surface morphology, we calculated the height–height correlation function and the power spectrum density function from the atomic force microscopy image data. When the annealing temperature for 20 nm thick Au layer increased from 500 to 700 °C, the interface width w and the lateral correlation length ξ of the surface increased obviously from 4.8 to 44.0 nm and from 70.5 to 180.9 nm, respectively. On the other hand, the roughness exponent α was a relatively universal parameter (∼0.87). While the morphology of the surfaces was mainly self-affine, suggesting that the random surface diffusion plays a dominant role in the kinetic roughening process of such an annealed system, the results of the morphological analysis also imply that the self-affine surface begins to become mounded for higher annealing temperatures.

A hybrid lightwave transmission system based on light injection/optoelectronic feedback techniques and fiber-visible laser light communication (VLLC) integration is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To be the first one of its kind in employing light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques in a fiber-VLLC integration lightwave transmission system, the light is successfully directly modulated with Community Access Television (CATV), 16-QAM, and 16-QAM-OFDM signals. Over a 40 km SMF and a 10 m free-space VLLC transport, good performances of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR)/composite second-order (CSO)/composite triple-beat (CTB)/bit error rate (BER) are achieved for CATV/16-QAM/16-QAM-OFDM signals transmission. Such a hybrid lightwave transmission system would be very useful since it can provide broadband integrated services including CATV, Internet, and telecommunication services over both distribute fiber and in-building networks.
