Developing highly efficient electrochemical catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) provides a solution to battle global warming issues resulting from ever-increasing carbon footprint due to human activities. Copper (Cu) is known for its efficiency in CO2RR towards value-added hydrocarbons; hence its unique structural properties along with various Cu alloys have been extensively explored in the past decade. Here, we demonstrate a two-step approach to achieve intimate atomic Cu-Ag interfaces on the surface of Cu nanowires, which show greatly improved CO2RR selectivity towards methane (CH4). The specially designed Cu-Ag interfaces showed an impressive maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 72% towards CH4production at −1.17 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)).

The degradation of amorphous cobalt phosphides (CoPx) as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is studied in the discontinuous operation of alkaline water electrolysis cells (AWEs). Although amorphous CoPx shows a 100-fold enhancement in HER activity over nickel, the kinetic current for the HER is decreased after discontinuous operation. Under the off condition, the cathode potential of the AWE increases close to the equilibrium potential for CoPx oxidation to Co, Co(OH)2, CoOx, and CoPxOy. The irreversible oxide and hydroxide formation induces weaker interactions between Co and P, and thus the degradation of kinetics over CoPx, negatively affecting the HER even though a cathodic current is applied for recovery. A cathodic protection method is devised to mitigate the degradation of CoPx by shifting the electrode potential below the equilibrium potential of Co(OH)2. Mn is chosen as a sacrificial species, and it slows the rate of electrode degradation by negative polarization of the electrode. The results show that the co-deposition of even a small amount of Mn onto the CoPx electrode could limit the loss of HER activity during repeated discontinuous operation of the AWEs. Furthermore, in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis confirms that the CoPx with co-deposited Mn does show the effect on holding the phase of CoPx during discontinuous operation.

The production of spent coffee grounds (SCG) is steadily increasing, and its proper treatment has become an increasingly challenging task. This study explored the potential use of alkaline bottle-washing wastewater (BWW) from a soju (a Korean hard liquor) manufacturer as an alternative pretreatment agent to enhance the biodegradability and thus the biomethanation of SCG through anaerobic digestion. Thermo-alkaline pretreatment with BWW was effective in increasing the soluble organic fraction of SCG (i.e., improved bioavailability) at all temperatures tested (23–70 °C). The disintegration degree of the particulate organic matter in SCG ranged from 8.6 to 13.1% and increased with increasing pretreatment temperature. The 30-day methane yield (per g chemical oxygen demand (COD) of SCG fed) was significantly higher for the BWW-pretreated SCG (342.4–361.2 mL/g COD) than for the raw SCG (284.7 mL/g COD) and even for the NaOH-pretreated SCG (at the same pH as BWW, pH 12.3) tested for comparison (299.7–320.9 mL/g COD). This significant increase in methane production can be attributed to the presence of readily biodegradable ethanol derived from waste soju in BWW and the alkaline solubilization of SCG. Our results suggest a straightforward way to manage SCG and BWW together in a sustainable and economical manner.

High-level radioactive waste (HLW) such as spent fuel is inevitably produced when nuclear power plants are operated. A geological repository has been considered as one of the most adequate options for the disposal of HLW, and it will be constructed in host rock at a depth of 500~1,000 meters below ground level with the concept of an engineered barrier system (EBS) and a natural barrier system. The compacted bentonite buffer is one of the most important components of the EBS. As the compacted bentonite buffer is located between disposal canisters with spent fuel and the host rock, it can restrain the release of radionuclides and protect canisters from the inflow of groundwater. Because of inflow of groundwater into the compacted bentonite buffer, it is essential to investigate soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) of the compacted bentonite buffer in order to evaluate the entire safety performance of the EBS. Therefore, this paper conducted laboratory experiments to analyze the SWCC for a Korean Ca-type compacted bentonite buffer considering dry density, confined or unconfined condition, and drying or wetting path. There was no significant difference of SWCC considering dry density under unconfined condition. Furthermore, it was found that there was higher water suction in unconfined condition that in confined condition, and higher water suction during drying path than during wetting path.

The effect of oil extraction from spent coffee grounds as a pre-treatment strategy prior to anaerobic digestion besides assessing the feasibility of defatted spent coffee grounds co-digestion with spent tea waste, glycerin, and macroalgae were examined. Mesophilic BMP tests were performed using defatted spent coffee grounds alongside four co-substrates in the ratio of 25, 50, and 75%, respectively. The highest methane yield was obtained with the mono-digestion of defatted spent coffee grounds with 336 ± 7 mL CH4/g VS and the yield increased with the increase in the mass ratio of defatted spent coffee grounds during co-digestion. Moreover, defatted spent coffee grounds showed the highest VS and TS removal at 35.5% and 32.1%, respectively and decreased thereafter. Finally, a linear regression model for the interaction effects between substrates was demonstrated and showed that distinctly mixing defatted spent coffee grounds, spent coffee grounds, and spent tea waste outperforms other triple mixed substrates.

The M13 bacteriophage, a nature‐inspired environmentally friendly biomaterial, is used as a perovskite crystal growth template and a grain boundary passivator in perovskite solar cells. The amino groups and carboxyl groups of amino acids on the M13 bacteriophage surface function as Lewis bases, interacting with the perovskite materials. The M13 bacteriophage‐added perovskite films show a larger grain size and reduced trap‐sites compared with the reference perovskite films. In addition, the existence of the M13 bacteriophage induces light scattering effect, which enhances the light absorption particularly in the long‐wavelength region around 825 nm. Both the passivation effect of the M13 bacteriophage coordinating to the perovskite defect sites and the light scattering effect intensify when the M13 virus‐added perovskite precursor solution is heated at 90 °C prior to the film formation. Heating the solution denatures the M13 bacteriophage by breaking their inter‐ and intra‐molecular bondings. The denatured M13 bacteriophage‐added perovskite solar cells exhibit an efficiency of 20.1% while the reference devices give an efficiency of 17.8%. The great improvement in efficiency comes from all of the three photovoltaic parameters, namely short‐circuit current, open‐circuit voltage, and fill factor, which correspond to the perovskite grain size, trap‐site passivation, and charge transport, respectively., The M13 bacteriophage functions as an effective perovskite growth template and a passivator in perovskite solar cells. This is owing to its filamentous and uniform dimension, as well as the amino acids on its surface. These effects enhance when the M13 viruses are denatured at high temperature. The efficiency increases from 17.8% to 20.1% upon addition of the denatured viruses.

The management of cattle manure (CM) has become increasingly challenging because its production continues to rise, while the regulations on manure management have become increasingly stringent. In Korea, most farms produce CM as a dry mixture with lignocellulosic bedding materials (mainly sawdust), making it impractical to treat CM by anaerobic digestion. To address this problem, this study examined whether anaerobic co-digestion with food waste (FW) and pig manure (PM) could be an effective approach for the treatment of CM. The batch anaerobic digestion tests at different CM: FW: PM mixing ratios showed that more methane was produced as the FW fraction increased, and as the CM fraction decreased. The response surface models describing how the substrate mixing ratio affects the methane yield and synergistic effect (methane yield basis) were successfully generated. The models proved that the methane yield and synergistic effect respond differently to changes in the substrate mixing ratio. The maximum 30-day methane yield was predicted at 100% FW, whereas the maximum 30-day synergy index was estimated for the mixture of 47% CM, 6% FW, and 47% PM (total solids basis). The synergy index model showed that CM, FW, and PM could be co-digested without a substantial loss of their methane potential at any mixing ratio (30-day synergy index, 0.89&ndash, 1.22), and that a possible antagonistic effect could be avoided by keeping the FW proportion less than 50%. The results suggest that co-digestion with PM and FW could be flexibly applied for the treatment and valorization of CM in existing anaerobic digestion plants treating FW and PM.

This study compared single- versus two-phase systems for semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of food waste without pH control at varying organic loading rates (OLRs). The methanogenic reactors of both systems required trace element supplementation for stable operation at 3.0 g VS (volatile solids)/L∙d or higher OLRs. Under trace-element supplemented conditions, both systems achieved stable and efficient performance at OLRs up to 4.0 g VS/L∙d. The two-phase system outperformed the single-phase system at 1.0–4.0 g VS/L∙d OLRs, but it failed at an OLR of 5.0 g VS/L∙d. Meanwhile, the single-phase system maintained the stable performance and reached its maximum methane production at this OLR. These results suggest that a single-phase configuration is more advantageous for robust treatment of food waste without pH control at high organic and hydraulic loads. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens dominated the methanogen community throughout the experiment in both systems. Microbial community structure shifts correlated with reactor operation and performance characteristics.

The Lewis acid–base adduct approach has been widely used to form uniform perovskite films, which has provided a methodological base for the development of high-performance perovskite solar cells. However, its incompatibility with formamidinium (FA)-based perovskites has impeded further enhancement of photovoltaic performance and stability. Here, we report an efficient and reproducible method to fabricate highly uniform FAPbI3 films via the adduct approach. Replacement of the typical Lewis base dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) enabled the formation of a stable intermediate adduct phase, which can be converted into a uniform and pinhole-free FAPbI3 film. Here we examine Ag-Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles with bumpy structures for use in plasmonic photocatalysts. We synthesized the nanoparticles using a very simple co-reduction process. The shell thickness of the nanoparticles was controlled in order to investigate the effects of shell thickness on photocatalytic activity and stability. With increasing shell thickness, it was be observed that the activity and the stability were simultaneously improved. A thin shell lead to de-wetting of Cu2O from the Ag core and considerable oxidation of Cu2O to CuO. The high activity could be due to the unique structure of Ag-Cu2O, which has a high surface area and plasmonic charge transfer from the Ag core. In addition, we elucidated the stability tendency using conducted density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Strain induced between the Ag core and shell is critical to the stability, leading to de-wetting and oxidation of Cu2O.

Demonstration tests of engineered barrier systems are essential to ensure the performance and safety of high-level radioactive waste repositories. An In-DEBS test was performed and the coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior of the buffer was investigated. The In-DEBS test started operation on July 19, 2016, and has been successful so far. The THM behavior of the buffer was analyzed using the experimental data of the temperature, relative humidity, and total pressure. The distribution of temperature, relative humidity, and total pressure was observed with respect to time and sensor location. The temperature reached a steady state within a few days to several weeks after heating the heater. On the other hand, changes in relative humidity and total pressure over 1118 days were much lower than expected, which was thought to be because the amount of groundwater inflow from the rock mass around the test deposition borehole was local and limited.

Microbial community structure in a farm-scale anaerobic digester treating swine manure was investigated during three process events: 1) prolonged starvation, and changes of 2) operating temperature (between meso- and thermophilic) and 3) hydraulic retention time (HRT). Except during the initial period, the digester was dominated by hydrogenotrophic methanogens (HMs). The bacterial community structure significantly shifted with operating temperature and HRT but not with long-term starvation. Clostridiales (26.5–54.4%) and Bacteroidales (2.5–13.7%) became dominant orders in the digester during the period of HM dominance. Abundance of diverse meso- and thermophilic bacteria increased during the same period; many of these species may be H 2 producers, and/or syntrophic acetate oxidizers. This study investigated the anaerobic digestion of Ulva biomass as an approach to diversifying energy sources and managing seaweed waste in a cost-effective manner. Ulva species are often identified as the main culprit of serious macroalgal blooms around the world, and their sulfur-rich nature causes difficulties in handling the biomass. Two reactors in continuous (Rc) and sequencing batch (Rs) modes were operated with decreasing hydraulic retention time in a stepwise manner from 20 to 6 days. Rs allowed significantly higher methane productivity (0.19–0.22 L/g chemical oxygen demand [COD] fed) and biomass retention capacity than Rc (0–0.16 L/g COD fed) throughout the experiment. Interestingly, sulfide production was also higher in Rs than in Rc. These findings, together with microbial quantification results, suggested that Rs operation enhanced biomass retention and the activity of both methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The Rc microbial community was less diverse and more variable than the Rs community. Accordingly, the performance of Rc was more significantly affected by changes in hydraulic and thus organic loads. Aceticlastic Methanosaetaceae dominated the methanogen community in both reactors, with the abundance of methanogens being significantly higher in Rs than in Rc. This may explain the more efficient and stable methane production despite the greater sulfidogenic activity in Rs, particularly at high hydraulic loads. Together, the results suggest that sequencing batch operation is advantageous over conventional continuous flow operation for the biomethanation of Ulva biomass and potentially other sulfur-rich feedstocks.

Recently, Pt3M (M = Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, etc.) intermetallic compounds have been highlighted as promising candidates for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. In general, to form those intermetallic compounds, alloy phase nanoparticles are synthesized and then heat-treated at a high temperature. However, nanoparticles easily agglomerate during the heat treatment, resulting in a decrease in electrochemical surface area (ECSA). In this study, we synthesized Pt-Fe alloy nanoparticles and employed carbon coating to protect the nanoparticles from agglomeration during heat treatment. As a result, Pt3Fe L12 structure was obtained without agglomeration of the nanoparticles; the ECSA of Pt-Fe alloy and intermetallic Pt3Fe/C was 37.6 and 33.3 m2 gPt-1, respectively. Pt3Fe/C exhibited excellent mass activity (0.454 A mgPt-1) and stability with superior resistances to nanoparticle agglomeration and iron leaching. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that, owing to the higher dissolution potential of Fe atoms on the Pt3Fe surface than those on the Pt-Fe alloy, Pt3Fe/C had better stability than Pt-Fe/C. A single cell fabricated with Pt3Fe/C showed higher initial performance and superior durability, compared to that with commercial Pt/C. We suggest that Pt3M chemically ordered electrocatalysts are excellent candidates that may become the most active and durable ORR catalysts available.

This study investigated the single-stage partial nitritation and anammox (S-PNA) treatment of low-strength ammonia wastewater (≤140 mg NH4+-N/L). Upflow dual-bed gel-carrier reactor (UDGR) with polyvinyl alcohol cryogel biocarriers, developed in this study, was employed for the anammox biomass enrichment from conventional activated sludge and subsequent S-PNA experiments. Anammox biomass was successfully enriched from conventional activated sludge. The enriched anammox carriers were inoculated together with gel carriers containing nitrifying sludge into the S-PNA reactors. S-PNA activity developed rapidly, and the nitrogen removal efficiency and rate reached up to 90.1% (with complete ammonia removal) and 0.15 kg N/m3⋅d, respectively, under low nitrogen loading conditions (0.10–0.17 kg N/m3⋅d). The microbial community structure changed significantly while adapting to anammox and S-PNA conditions. Anammox was likely driven solely by a Candidatus Jettenia population accounting for ≤49.4% of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. The results demonstrate that the UDGR-based S-PNA is suitable for treating low-strength wastewater.

A marine outfall can be a wastewater management system that discharges sewage and stormwater into the sea; hence, it is a source of microbial pollution on recreational beaches, including antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), which lead to an increase in untreatable diseases. In this regard, a marine outfall must be efficiently located to mitigate these risks. This study aimed to 1) investigate the spatiotemporal variability of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and ARGs on a recreational beach and 2) design marine outfalls to reduce microbial risks. For this purpose, E. coli and ARGs with influential environmental variables were intensively monitored on Gwangalli beach, South Korea in this study. Environmental fluid dynamic code (EFDC) was used and calibrated using the monitoring data, and 12 outfall extension scenarios were explored (6 locations at 2 depths). The results revealed that repositioning the marine outfall can significantly reduce the concentrations of E. coli and ARGs on the beach by 46–99%. Offshore extended outfalls at the bottom of the sea reduced concentrations of E. coli and ARGs on the beach more effectively than onshore outfalls at the sea surface. These findings could be helpful in establishing microbial pollution management plans at recreational beaches in the future.

Methanogenesis and sulfidogenesis, the major microbial reduction reactions occurring in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process, compete for common substrates. Therefore, the balance between methanogenic and sulfidogenic activities is important for efficient biogas production. In this study, changes in methanogenic and sulfidogenic performances in response to changes in organic loading rate (OLR) were examined in two digesters treating sulfur-rich macroalgal waste under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, respectively. Both methanogenesis and sulfidogenesis were largely suppressed under thermophilic relative to mesophilic conditions, regardless of OLR. However, the suppressive effect was even more significant for sulfidogenesis, which may suggest an option for H2S control. The reactor microbial communities developed totally differently according to reactor temperature, with the abundance of both methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria being significantly higher under mesophilic conditions. In both reactors, sulfidogenic activity increased with increasing OLR. The findings of this study help to understand how temperature affects sulfidogenesis and methanogenesis during AD.

Smart connected product (SCP) operation embodies the concept of the internet of things (IoT). To increase the probability of success of SCP operations for customers, the high quality of the IoT data across operations is imperative. IoT data go beyond sensor data, as integrate some other various type of data such as timestamps, device metadata, business data, and external data through SCP operation processes. Therefore, traditional data-centric approaches that analyze sensor data and correct their errors are not enough to preserve, in long-term basis, adequate levels of quality of IoT data. This research provides and alternative framework of data quality management as a process-centric approach to improve the quality of IoT data. The proposed framework extends the process reference model (PRM) for data quality management (DQM) defined in ISO 8000-61, and tailored to fully adapt to the special requirements of the IoT data management. These involve several adaptations: first, the scope of the SCP operations for data quality management is determined, and the processes required for SCP operations are defined following the process description format of ISO 8000-61. Second, the relationship between the processes and the structure of the processes in the technology stack of the SCP operations are described to cover the actual nature of the IoT data flows. Finally, a new IoT DQM-PRM is proposed by integrating the processes for the SCP operations with DQM-PRM. When these processes are executed in the organization, the quality of IoT data composed of data of various types can be continuously improved and the utilization rate of SCP operations is expected to increase. Interspecies electron transfer (IET) between microbial populations with different functions is critical to stable anaerobic digestion. This study, in an attempt to facilitate IET, investigated the effect of magnetite supplementation on the biomethanation of dairy effluent in continuous mode. The magnetite-added reactor (RM) was significantly more resistant and resilient to process imbalance than the reactor run without magnetite addition (RC). RC showed unstable performance with repeated process upsets, but its performance improved to be comparable to that of RM after applying magnetite supplementation. Magnetite was particularly effective in stabilizing a build-up of propionic acid and therefore improving the process robustness and reliability. The enhanced biomethanation in terms of productivity and stability was attributed to the facilitated direct IET (DIET) between exoelectrogens and methanogens via magnetite particles. Methanosaeta was the predominant methanogen group in the experimental reactors and likely played a key role in both DIET-mediated carbon dioxide-reducing and aceticlastic methanogenesis.

The feasibility of co-digestion of Ulva with whey was investigated at varying substrate mixing ratios in two continuous reactors run with increasing and decreasing proportions of Ulva , respectively. Co-digestion with whey proved beneficial to the biomethanation of Ulva , with the methane yield being greater by up to 1.6-fold in co-digestion phases than in the Ulva mono-digestion phases. The experimental reactors responded differently, in terms of process performance and community structure, to the changes in the substrate mixing ratio. This can be attributed to the different operating regimes between two reactors, which may have caused the microbial communities to develop in different ways to acclimate. Methanosaeta -related populations were the predominant methanogens responsible for the production of methane regardless of different substrate mixing ratios in both reactors. Considering the methane recovery and the Ulva treatment capacity, the optimal fraction of Ulva in the substrate mixture is suggested to be 50–75%.

A downflow anaerobic filter packed with blast-furnace slag (BFS) grains was evaluated for treating cheese whey, a high-strength dairy effluent. The reactor demonstrated effective and stable biomethanation of whey in continuous mode without pH control. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal remained at around 80%, with the reactor pH being maintained neutral without buffering, in the organic loading rate (OLR) range of 0.8–2.4 g COD/l∙d. Although the COD removal decreased down to below 60% at higher OLRs along with acid accumulation, the methane production rate continued to increase with increasing OLR. On the other hand, the methane yield was maintained at 0.28–0.34 l/g COD throughout the experiment. The substrate removal and methane production kinetics were successfully described by the modified Stover–Kincannon model. The overall results suggest that BFS grains could be used as economic filter media for anaerobic treatment of cheese whey and other easily acidifying waste streams.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of Ulva biomass, a promising next-generation feedstock for energy production, was investigated in sequencing batch mode. Over five cycles of operation, the methane yield decreased more than twofold (from 0.15 to 0.07 L/g CODfed), while the organic treatment efficiency (i.e., chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal) remained fairly constant (53.7–61.1%). Such changes in reactor performance were related with structural variations in the microbial community, particularly the bacterial community, with repeated cycles. Methanosaeta- and Methanolinea-related populations were most likely the main aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens, respectively, in the reactor. The emergence and prevalence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs), primarily a Solitalea-related population, most likely resulted in increased consumption of organic substrates for sulfate reduction, rather than methane production, in later cycles. Our observations suggest that the metabolic properties of the reactor changed with the transition of the bacterial community structure over cycles, and the metabolic shift had a negative effect on methanogenesis. The sequencing batch operation strategy applied in this study was not suitable for maximizing methane production from Ulva biomass, although the treatment efficiency was fairly stable. Robust control of SRB activity is necessary for more stable and efficient biomethanation of Ulva biomass in sequencing batch mode.

Oxidation by persulfates at elevated temperatures (thermally activated persulfates) disintegrates bacterial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) composing waste-activated sludge (WAS), facilitating the subsequent sludge dewatering. The WAS disintegration process by thermally activated persulfates exhibited different behaviors depending on the types of persulfates employed, that is, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) versus peroxydisulfate (PDS). The decomposition of PMS in WAS proceeded via a two-phase reaction, an instantaneous decomposition by the direct reaction with the WAS components followed by a gradual thermal decay. During the PMS treatment, the WAS filterability (measured by capillary suction time) increased in the initial stage but rapidly stagnated and even decreased as the reaction proceeded. In contrast, the decomposition of PDS exhibited pseudo first-order decay during the entire reaction, resulting in the greater and steadier increase in the WAS filterability compared to the case of PMS. The treatment by PMS produced a high portion of true colloidal solids (1 μm) and eluted soluble and bound EPS, which is detrimental to the WAS filterability. However, the observations regarding the dissolved organic carbon, ammonium ions, and volatile suspended solids collectively indicated that the treatment by PMS more effectively disintegrated WAS compared to PDS, leading to higher weight (or volume) reduction by postcentrifugation.

The thermal decomposition synthesis of long copper nanowires (CuNWs) was achieved by controlling the synthesis parameters. A detailed study was performed to determine the effect of the molar ratio of copper chloride to nickel acetylacetonate, temperature, and stirring rate on the final shape of the products. Transparent electrodes (TEs) were fabricated by wet treatment with acetic acid (AA), without using a sintering process. The low oxidation stability and high surface roughness are the main disadvantages of the CuNW TEs, which limit their applications. In order to overcome these issues, we prepared CuNW/polymer composite TEs by partial embedding of the CuNWs into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrates. The CuNW/PMMA composite TEs exhibit excellent optoelectronic performance (91.3% at 100.7 Ω/sq), low surface roughness (4.6 nm in height), and good mechanical and chemical stability as compared with CuNW TEs. On the basis of these properties, we believe that CuNW-based composite TEs could serve as low-cost materials for a wide range of new optoelectronic devices.

This study investigated the simultaneous effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and pH on the continuous production of VFAs from food waste leachate using response surface analysis. The response surface approximations (R(2)=0.895, p0.05) revealed that pH has a dominant effect on the specific VFA production (PTVFA) within the explored space (1-4-day HRT, pH 4.5-6.5). The estimated maximum PTVFA was 0.26g total VFAs/g CODf at 2.14-day HRT and pH 6.44, and the approximation was experimentally validated by running triplicate reactors under the estimated optimum conditions. The mixture of the filtrates recovered from these reactors was tested as a denitrification carbon source and demonstrated superior performance in terms of reaction rate and lag length relative to other chemicals, including acetate and methanol. The overall results provide helpful information for better design and control of continuous fermentation for producing waste-derived VFAs, an alternative carbon source for denitrification.

Large and increasing volumes of wastewater are produced from the electrical and electronics manufacturing industries, and therefore, wastewater treatment has become a challenging task for manufacturers. This study investigated the anaerobic treatment of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) wastewater by co-digestion with ethyl lactate (EL) wastewater; both of these are major organic wastewaters generated from the manufacture of semiconductors and thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs). Biochemical potential tests showed that both the methane production rate and yield were enhanced significantly when TMAH and EL wastewaters were digested in a mixture than when they were digested alone. Correspondingly, the synergy index calculated based on the methane yield was significantly higher than 1 (i.e., synergistic effect) throughout the 60-day incubation period in all co-digestion runs, with the optimal mixing ratio of TMAH and EL wastewaters for methanogenic treatment ranging between 50:50 and 25:75 (total carbon basis). The overall results suggest that anaerobic co-digestion can offer a cost-effective option for the treatment and valorization of TMAH and EL wastewaters, thereby potentially helping to reduce wastewater treatment costs in the semiconductor and TFT-LCD industries.

Two parallel anaerobic digesters (8500 m3 capacity each), combined with thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment, co-digesting dewatered sewage sludge, dewatered human feces, and food wastewater were monitored over a 12-month period from start-up to explore the feasibility of field application of the combined process. The waste mixtures before and after pretreatment and the feed and digestate of each digester were taken semimonthly (i.e., 48 samples in total) for analysis of the feed characteristics, process parameters, and digester microbial community structure. The TH pretreatment proved effective in improving the bioavailability of the waste mixture. The solubilization efficiency tended to increase with the particulate organic fraction in the raw mixture. Although fluctuations in the feed characteristics and loading significantly influenced the process and microbial behaviors, the digesters maintained stable performance during the study period. Our results demonstrate that the TH-anaerobic digestion process can achieve an effective and robust treatment of the waste mixture.

Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between exoelectrogenic fatty acid-oxidizing bacteria and electrotrophic methanogens has recently been discovered, and studies have suggested that promoting DIET by adding electrically conductive material can effectively enhance the methanogenic performance and stability of anaerobic digestion (AD). This study investigated the effect of conductive magnetite (Fe3O4) addition on the AD of a sulfur-rich organic waste mixture, with an emphasis on the fate of sulfur and on H2S production. In contrast to previous findings, methanogenic performance under magnetite-added conditions was not significantly enhanced within the tested dose range of up to 20 mM Fe. When magnetite was added, H2S production decreased remarkably along with the extracellular accumulation of S0. Moreover, the H2S content in biogas was below 100 ppmv at magnetite doses of 8 mM Fe or higher (>6000 ppmv under control conditions, i.e., without magnetite). The reduced H2S production appears to be due to the anaerobic oxidation of sulfide to S0 because sulfate reduction remained active, whereas FeS was not produced under magnetite-added conditions. Based on microbial community analysis results and thermodynamic calculations, the electric syntrophy via DIET between exoelectrogenic anaerobic sulfide-oxidizing bacteria and electrotrophic methanogens is suggested to have been promoted by magnetite. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to propose an electro-syntrophic association that couples the oxidation of sulfide to S0 with the reduction of CO2 to CH4 in methanogenic environments. The present findings open a new possibility for in situ H2S control and sulfur recovery in AD processes for sulfur-rich waste treatment.

A multi-layer repository concept is proposed as an alternative to the single-layer repository concept to improve the disposal density of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in Korea. Numerical simulations are performed to compare the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior in the existing Korean reference HLW disposal system (KRS) based on the single-layer repository concept to that in the new multi-layer repository concept. The applicability of the multi-layer repository concept, such as double- and triple-layer repositories, for the disposal of HLW is analyzed with respect to a maximum temperature criterion of 100 °C, evolution of saturation and pore pressure, and mechanical stability. Maximum temperatures are below 100 °C in the double- and triple-layer repository concepts, as in the single-layer reference, although two peaks in simulated temperatures are observed during the evolution of the thermal pulse, resulting from superposition of decay heat at different vertical levels in the multi-layer repository concept. There is no significant difference in the evolution of pore pressure and saturation among the three concepts. The evolutions of mean effective stress at the bentonite blocks and backfill materials are also not significantly different between the single-, double-, and triple-layer repository concepts, because the hydraulic behavior is quite similar, resulting in almost the same change in swelling pressure. Stress states in the rock mass near the tunnels and deposition holes remain below the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelopes at the repositories of 500 m depth in the single-, double-, and triple-layer repository concept simulations. However, the stress states exceed the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelopes at the repositories below 500 m depth (beneath the top layer) in the double- and triple-layer repository concepts. Also, mechanical analysis shows high potential for spalling failure around the deposition holes and tunnel roof in the double- and triple-layer repository concepts. Subsidence in the double- and triple-layer concepts due to the construction of repositories is much deeper than that in the single-layer concept, and uplift induced by heating the rock mass due to the decay heat in the double- and triple-layer concepts is much higher than in the single-layer concept. These results indicate that multi-layer repositories with larger depth intervals between layers are a feasible alternative to the KRS to safely achieve higher disposal density.

Biogas upgrading through chemical absorption is an energy-intensive and costly process, but it is essential for the higher-value utilization of biogas as biomethane. The loss of absorbents and the energy consumption for their regeneration lower the economic viability of the process. This study investigated the potential of human urine as an economical and sustainable source of solvent for biogas upgrading. Hydrolyzed urine (HU) is rich in ammonia (>4.4 g N/L) and alkaline (approximately pH 9), which makes it attractive as an absorbent to capture CO2. The hydrolysis characteristics of urine were assessed with and without urease addition at different temperatures (4, 25, and 35 °C). Urease induced immediate urine hydrolysis, and temperature had a more significant effect on the hydrolysis rate when urease was not added. Conductivity, but not pH, proved to be a reliable indicator for monitoring urine hydrolysis. The CO2 capture capacity observed in the biogas upgrading experiments with simulated biogas (60% CH4 and 40% CO2, v/v) was 0.41–0.53 mol CO2/mol total ammonia nitrogen (TAN). The experiments using real biogas (71% CH4) showed that CO2 was effectively captured by HU with complete removal of H2S (2440 ppmv). This study is the first to demonstrate the direct use of HU as a sole solvent for biogas upgrading and suggest the possibility of recovering fertilizer material (e.g., ammonium bicarbonate, NH4HCO3) from the spent HU. The results suggest interesting opportunities to improve the economic feasibility of biogas upgrading and to valorize human urine.

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Human urine is a unique solution that has the right composition to constitute both a severe environmental threat and a rich source of nitrogen and phosphorous. In fact, between 4–9% of urine mass consists of ions, such as K+, Cl−, Na+ or NH4+. Because of its high ionic strength, urine osmotic pressure can reach values of up to 2000 kPa. With this in mind, this work aimed to study the effectiveness of real urine as a novel draw solution for forward osmosis. Water flux, reverse nitrogen flux and membrane fouling were investigated using fresh or hydrolysed urine. Water flux as high as 16.7 ± 1.1 L m−2 h−1 was recorded using real hydrolysed urine. Additionally, no support layer membrane fouling was noticed in over 20 h of experimentation. Urine was also employed to dewater a Chlorella vulgaris culture. A fourfold increase in algal concentration was achieved while having an average flux of 14.1 L m−2 h−1. During the algae dewatering, a flux decrease of about 19% was noticed; this was mainly due to a thin layer of algal deposition on the active side of the membrane. Overall, human urine was found to be an effective draw solution for forward osmosis.

This study examines the potential of the mixed-culture microalgal consortia enriched from aerobic sludge (AeS) and anaerobic sludge (AnS) with regard to nutrient removal and biomass production from four different anaerobic digestion (AD) effluents. Both the inocula achieved the complete removal of the NH4+-N (initial concentration of 40 mg/L) within 14 days from all the effluents. The AeS cultures showed faster and greater microalgal growth, although the NH4+-N removal rate was comparable or higher in the case of the AnS cultures. Further, the AeS and AnS cultures showed significantly different lipid production characteristics in terms of the fatty acid composition and the response to nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen starvation caused changes in the microbial community structures in all the experimental cultures, which may have influenced the lipid metabolism and the microalgal growth. The overall results suggest that both the inocula exhibit good potential with regard to the treatment of AD effluents.

Mild-temperature thermo-alkaline pretreatment of spent coffee grounds (SCG) was studied to improve its solubilization and methanation. The simultaneous effects of NaOH concentration (0–0.2 M) and temperature (60–90 °C) were investigated. Significant solubilization of SCG was achieved by the pretreatment, particularly under high-NaOH-concentration and high-temperature conditions. However, adding NaOH above a certain concentration adversely affected the methane production. Therefore, the degree of solubilization (SD) correlated poorly with methane yield (Ym). Response surface models of SD and Ym were successfully generated. The maximum response of SD (36.4%) was obtained at 0.18 M NaOH and 90.0 °C, while that of Ym (263.31 mL CH4/g COD added) was obtained at 0.13 M NaOH and 70.5 °C. Hydrogenotrophic Methanospirillum species were the dominant methanogens in all the SCG digestion tests. It is likely that NaOH concentration had a more significant influence on the development of microbial community structure, particularly of methanogens than temperature.

Thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment was investigated for the anaerobic digestion (AD) of a mixture of high-strength organic wastes (i.e., dewatered human feces, dewatered sewage sludge, and food wastewater) at laboratory scale to simulate a full-scale plant and evaluate its feasibility. The reactors maintained efficient and stable performance at a hydraulic retention time of 20 days, which may be not sufficient for the mesophilic AD of high-suspended-solid wastes, despite the temporal variations in organic load. The addition of FeCl3 was effective in controlling H2S and resulted in significant changes in the microbial community structure, particularly the methanogens. The temporary interruption in feeding or temperature control led to immediate performance deterioration, but it recovered rapidly when normal operations were resumed. The overall results suggest that the AD process coupled with TH pretreatment can provide an efficient, robust, and resilient system to manage high-suspended-solid wastes, supporting the feasibility of its full-scale implementation.

Aluminum nanoparticles are considered promising as alternatives to conventional ink materials, replacing silver and copper nanoparticles, due to their extremely low cost and low melting temperature. However, a serious obstacle to realizing their use as conductive ink materials is the oxidation of aluminum. In this research, we synthesized the oxide-free aluminum nanoparticles using catalytic decomposition and an oleic acid coating method, and these materials were applied to conductive ink for the first time. The injection time of oleic acid determines the size of the aluminum nanoparticles by forming a self-assembled monolayer on the nanoparticles instead of allowing the formation of an oxide phase. Fabricated nanoparticles were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to verify their structural and chemical composition. In addition, conductive inks made of these nanoparticles exhibit electrical properties when they are sintered at over 300 °C in a reducing atmosphere. This result shows that aluminum nanoparticles can be used as an alternative conductive material in printed electronics and can solve the cost issues associated with noble metals.

Ulva biomass was evaluated as a co-substrate for anaerobic digestion of spent coffee grounds at varying organic loads (0.7–1.6 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L d) and substrate compositions. Co-digestion with Ulva (25%, COD basis) proved beneficial for SCG biomethanation in both terms of process performance and stability. The beneficial effect is much more pronounced at higher organic and hydraulic loads, with the highest COD removal and methane yield being 51.8% and 0.19 L/g COD fed, respectively. The reactor microbial community structure changed dynamically during the experiment, and a dominance shift from hydrogenotrophic to aceticlastic methanogens occurred with increase in organic loading rate. Network analysis provides a comprehensive view of the microbial interactions involved in the system and confirms a direct positive correlation between Ulva input and methane productivity. A group of populations, including Methanobacterium - and Methanoculleus -related methanogens, was identified as a possible indicator for monitoring the biomethanation performance.

Functioning biocathodes are essential for electromethanogenesis. This study investigated the development of a biocathode from non-acclimated anaerobic sludge in an electromethanogenesis cell at a cathode potential of -0.7V (vs. standard hydrogen electrode) over four cycles of repeated batch operations. The CO2-to-CH4 conversion rate increased (to 97.7%) while the length of the lag phase decreased as the number of cycles increased, suggesting that a functioning biocathode developed during the repeated subculturing cycles. CO2-resupply test results suggested that the biocathode catalyzed the formation of CH4 via both direct and indirect (H2-mediated) electron transfer mechanisms. The biocathode archaeal community was dominated by the genus Methanobacterium, and most archaeal sequences (>89%) were affiliated with Methanobacterium palustre. The bacterial community was dominated by putative electroactive bacteria, with Arcobacter, which is rarely observed in biocathodes, forming the largest population. These electroactive bacteria were likely involved in electron transfer between the cathode and the methanogens.

Promotion of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between exoelectrogenic bacteria and electron-utilizing methanogens has recently been discussed as a new method for enhanced biomethanation. This study evaluated the effect of magnetite-promoted DIET in continuous anaerobic digestion of dairy effluent and tested the magnetic separation and recycling of magnetite to avoid continuous magnetite addition. The applied magnetite recycling method effectively supported enhanced DIET activity and biomethanation performance over a long period (>250days) without adding extra magnetite. DIET via magnetite particles as electrical conduits was likely the main mechanism for the enhanced biomethanation. Magnetite formed complex aggregate structures with microbes, and magnetite recycling also helped retain more biomass in the process. Methanosaeta was likely the major methanogen group responsible for DIET-based methanogenesis, in association with Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi populations as syntrophic partners. The recycling approach proved robust and effective, highlighting the potential of magnetite recycling for high-rate biomethanation.

Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between exoelectrogenic fatty acid oxidizers and electrotrophic methanogens plays an important role in keeping the overall anaerobic digestion (AD) process well-balanced. This study examined the individual and combined effects of two different DIET-promoting strategies, i.e., magnetite addition (20 mM Fe) and external voltage application (0.6 V), in continuous digesters treating dairy wastewater. Although the strategies were both effective in enhancing the process performance and stability, adding magnetite had a much greater stimulatory effect. External voltage contributed little to the methane yield, and the digester with magnetite addition alone achieved stable performance, comparable to that of the digester where both strategies were combined, at short hydraulic retention times (down to 7.5 days). Diverse (putative) electroactive microorganisms were significantly enriched under DIET-promoting conditions, particularly with magnetite addition. The overall results suggest that magnetite addition could effectively enhance AD performance and stability by promoting DIET-based electro-syntrophic microbial interactions.

As the global production of chicken manure has steadily increased, its proper management has become a challenging issue. This study examined process effluent from a bioethanol plant as a co-substrate for efficient anaerobic digestion of chicken manure. An anaerobic continuous reactor was operated in mono- and co-digestion modes by adding increasing amounts of the ethanol plant effluent (0%, 10%, and 20% (v/v) of chicken manure). Methanogenic performance improved significantly in terms of both methane production rate and yield (by up to 66% and 36%, respectively), with an increase in organic loading rate over the experimental phases. Correspondingly, the specific methanogenic activity was significantly higher in the co-digestion sludge than in the mono-digestion sludge. The reactor did not suffer any apparent process imbalance, ammonia inhibition, or nutrient limitation throughout the experiment, with the removal of volatile solids being stably maintained (56.3–58.9%). The amount of ethanol plant effluent appears to directly affect the rate of acidification, and its addition at ≥20% (v/v) to chicken manure needs to be avoided to maintain a stable pH. The overall results suggest that anerobic co-digestion with ethanol plant effluent may provide a practical means for the stable treatment and valorization of chicken manure.

Anaerobic digestion of spent coffee grounds (SCG) is considered disadvantageous, particularly under mono-digestion conditions, owing to slow degradation and nutrient imbalance. This study investigated the effect of co-feeding of SCG at a low ratio into food waste (FW) digesters, with the aim to determine whether SCG can be effectively treated and valorized using the spare capacity of existing digesters. Duplicate reactors showed stable performance under FW mono-digestion conditions but manifested severe deterioration in three volume turnovers after co-feeding of SCG (FW:SCG at 10:1 on a volatile solids basis). The reactors failed to recover despite repeated interrupted feeding and stabilization, and Ulva was added (FW:SCG:Ulva at 20:2:1) for nutrient supplementation. The two reactors subjected to different stabilization strategies (i.e., timing and intervals of interrupted feeding) responded differently to Ulva co-feeding: one recovered and maintained stable albeit suboptimal performance, whereas the other failed. Furthermore, the microbial communities developed differently in the reactors.

Water electrolysis has received great attention for producing hydrogen, but sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has remained a big challenge. Recently, cobalt sulfide materials have been widely explored as great choice in highly efficient electrocatalysts due to their good electrical conductivity and bi-functionality toward OER and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, cobalt sulfide shows outstanding HER activity, but its OER activity should be improved. Herein, hexagonal-phase cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanowires with abundant stepped surfaces and defect sites were prepared via a seed-growth approach with silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanoparticles. The Ag2S-CoS hetero-nanowires (HNWs) exhibited excellent electrochemical performances for oxygen evolution reaction (overpotential = 275 mV, Tafel slope = 77.1 mVdec−1, charge transfer resistance = 1.3 Ω) in 1.0 M KOH solution. The origin of superior activity was investigated using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. This work highlights the importance of surface defects for improving oxygen evolution reaction performance of water electrolysis.

Lowering the sintering temperature of nanoparticles in the electrode deposition process holds both academic and industrial interest because of the potential applications of such electrodes in polymer devices and flexible electronics. In addition, achieving uniform electrode formation after ligand exchange is equally important as lowering the sintering temperature. Here, we report a simple chemical treatment by the addition of ligand-exchanging interfaces to lower the sintering temperature; we also determine the optimum extent of ligand exchange for crack-free electrode formation. First, we investigated the structural change of Ag thin films with respect to the concentration of acrylic acid (AA) solutions. Second, we used thermal analysis to evaluate the effects of changes in the sintering temperature. We observed that the resulting conductivity of the Ag patterns was only one order of magnitude lower than that of bulk Ag when the patterns were sintered at 150 °C. The simple chemical treatment developed in this work for solution-processed Ag electrode formation can be adopted for flexible electronics, which would eliminate the need for vacuum and high-temperature processes.

International audience; Process understanding and parameter identification using numerical methods based on experimental findings are key aspects of the international cooperative project DECOVALEX (DEvelopment of COupled models and their VALidation against Experiments http//www.decovalex.org). Comparing the long-term predictions from numerical models against experimental results increases confidence in the site selection and site evaluation process for a radioactive waste repository in deep geological formations. In the present phase of the project, DECOVALEX2015, eight research teams have developed and applied models for simulating the HE-E in situ heater experiment in the Opalinus Clay in the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory in Switzerland. The modelling task was divided into two study stages, related to prediction and interpretation of the experiment. A blind prediction of the HE-E experiment was performed based on calibrated parameter values for both the Opalinus Clay, which were derived from the modelling of another in situ experiment (HE-D experiment in the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory), and calibrated parameters for MX80 granular bentonite and a sand/bentonite mixture, which were derived from modelling of laboratory column tests. After publication of the HE-E experimental data, additional functions for coupled processes were analysed and considered in the different models. Moreover, parameter values were varied to interpret the measured temperature, relative humidity and pore pressure evolution. Generally, the temperature field can be well reproduced and is mainly controlled by thermal conductivity in the heat conduction process; the thermal conductivities of buffer materials and Opalinus Clay strongly depend on the degree of water saturation. The distribution of relative humidity is acceptable as it is reproduced by using both the Richards’ flow model and the multiphase flow model. Important here is to consider the vapour diffusion process. The analysis of the predictive and interpretative modelling confirms that the main processes in the system have been understood at least for the short-term experimental duration and captured using the models developed and associated parameters with respect to the thermal and hydraulic aspects in the high-level nuclear waste disposal in clay formations. The additional experimental results will help to increase confidence in the THM models and in process understanding. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Mixed-culture fermentation that does not require an energy-intensive sterilization process is a viable approach for the economically feasible production of lactic acid (LA) due to the potential use of organic waste as feedstock. This study investigated mixed-culture LA fermentation of whey, a high-strength organic wastewater, in continuous mode. Variations in the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 120 to 8 h under different pH regimes in two thermophilic reactors (55 °C) were compared for their fermentation performance. One reactor was maintained at a low pH (pH 3.0) during operation at HRTs of 120 to 24 h and then adjusted to pH 5.5 in the later phases of fermentation at HRTs of 24 to 8 h (R1), while the second reactor was maintained at pH 5.5 throughout the experiment (R2). Although the LA production in R1 was negligible at low pH, it increased dramatically after the pH was raised to 5.5 and exceeded that in R2 when stabilized at HRTs of 8 and 12 h. The maximum yield (0.62 g LA/g substrate fed as the chemical oxygen demand (COD) equivalent), the production rate (11.5 g/L day), and the selectivity (95 %) of LA were all determined at a 12-h HRT in R1. Additionally, molecular and statistical analyses revealed that changes in the HRT and the pH significantly affected the bacterial community structure and thus the fermentation characteristics of the experimental reactors. Bacillus coagulans was likely the predominant LA producer in both reactors. The overall results suggest that low pH start-up has a positive effect on yield and selectivity in mixed-culture LA fermentation.

Proper management of spent coffee grounds has become a challenging problem as the production of this waste residue has increased rapidly worldwide. This study investigated the feasibility of the anaerobic co-digestion of spent coffee ground with various organic wastes, i.e., food waste, Ulva, waste activated sludge, and whey, for biomethanation. The effect of co-digestion was evaluated for each tested co-substrate in batch biochemical methane potential tests by varying the substrate mixing ratio. Co-digestion with waste activated sludge had an apparent negative effect on both the yield and production rate of methane. Meanwhile, the other co-substrates enhanced the reaction rate while maintaining methane production at a comparable or higher level to that of the mono-digestion of spent coffee ground. The reaction rate increased with the proportion of co-substrates without a significant loss in methanation potential. These results suggest the potential to reduce the reaction time and thus the reactor capacity without compromising methane production.

The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, and operating temperature (T OP) on the degradation of food waste-recycling wastewater (FRW) were investigated in laboratory-scale hydrolysis/acidogenesis reactors. Response surface analysis was used to approximate the production of volatile organic acids and degradation of volatile suspended solids (VSS), carbohydrate, protein, and lipid with regard to the independent variables (1 ≤ HRT ≤ 3 days, 4 ≤ pH ≤ 6, 25 ≤ T OP ≤ 45 °C). Partial cubic models adequately approximated the corresponding response surfaces at α
