There is hitherto a lack of a simple way to disrupt the coating of particles from liquid marbles in order to introduce additional reagents. Here, a 40 μL liquid marble, created on a superhydrophobic substrate with a 2 mm hole, forms an overhead and overhanging liquid component from which a single gas bubble of up to 28 μL volume could be introduced via the latter. This caused a localized clearing of the particle shell at the apical region of the overhead component because the particles could not be energetically sustained at the thin film region of the bubble. The subsequent dispensation of 5 μL of an external liquid directly onto the shell-free apex of the liquid marble allowed the coalescence of the two liquid bodies, bubble rupture, and restoration of complete particle shell encapsulation. The addition of the liquid via the overhanging component was alternatively found incapable of increasing the size of the overhead drop component. The localized bubble-actuated transient shell clearance at the apex of the liquid marble to allow the addition of reagents shown here portends new vistas for liquid marbles to be used in biomedical applications.

A family of dioxythiophene (DOT)-based conjugated random copolymers, capable of reversibly switching between a neutral black and an oxidized transmissive state, are reported for electrochromic (EC) applications. By replacing 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) in the previous generation of a core donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) terheterocycle with a methyl-alkylated 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT), we enhance the solubility of precursors and monomers in this new generation of broadly absorbing electrochromic polymers (ECPs). By adjusting the newly designed terheterocycle monomer feed ratio, we obtain three polymers with varying hues of color neutrality (a* and b* < ±10) throughout the entire switching voltage range and with integrated contrasts 45–49% throughout the visible region (380–700 nm). Electrochromic (EC) materials and devices provide a user-controlled, dynamic way of displaying information using low power, making them interesting for a range of applications in numerous markets, including logistics, retail, consumer goods, and health care. To optimize the cost while simplifying the production, expanding the color space, and enhancing the contrast and vibrancy of EC displays aimed for cost-sensitive products, we sought to reduce the number of layers as well as remove the underlying conducting layer that accounts for a substantial fraction of the cost of a printed label. Here, we show how conjugated electrochromic polymers, which are inherently semiconducting, can be used to accomplish this goal and afford printable EC displays with a flexible form factor. Using a combination of electrochemical probes, in situ spectroscopy, solid-state conductivity, and in situ conductance measurements, we have studied and compared five different EC polymers with conductivities spanning multiple orders of magnitude and colors that span most of the visible range, identifying polymers and properties that allow for switching from the colored to the clear state without an underlying conducting layer. Finally, we incorporate these EC polymers into optimized flexible devices without an underlying conductor and demonstrate that they are able to provide on-demand, reversible colored-to-clear switching on the order of seconds to minutes, with operating voltages below ±1 V, optical memories exceeding 60 min, and a shelf-life exceeding 12 months.

A thermal cycling method, whereby capillary tubes holding polymerase chain reactions are subjected to programmed tilt displacements so that they are moved using gravity over three spatial regions (I, II, and III) kept at different constant temperatures to facilitate deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) denaturation, annealing, and extension, is described. At tilt speeds in excess of 0.2 rad/s, the standard deviation of static coefficient of friction values was below 0.03, indicating in sync movement of multiple capillary tubes over the holding platform. The travel time during the acceleration phase and under constant velocity between adjacent regions (I to II and II to III) and distant regions (III to I) was 0.03 s and 0.31 s, respectively. The deviations in temperature did not exceed 0.05 °C from the average at the prescribed denaturing, annealing, and extension temperatures applied. DNA amplification was determined by optical readings, the fluorescence signal was found to increase twofold after 30 thermal cycles, and 1.16 × 106 DNA copies/μl could be detected. The approach also overcomes problems associated with thermal inertia, sample adhesion, sample blockage, and handling of the reaction vessels encountered in the other thermal cycling schemes used.

Electrochromic cells consisting of a black-to-transmissive propylenedioxythiophene/benzothiadiazole copolymer active layer and a minimally colored dioxypyrrole-based charge storage layer were constructed, and the effect of the redox capacity ratio between the two layers was evaluated. This ratio was tuned between large excesses of either the active layer or the charge storage layer (an unbalanced configuration), to cells where both films had the same redox capacity (a balanced configuration), and the effects on cell voltage, optical contrast, switching time and switching stability were assessed. The inclusion of an auxiliary reference electrode allowed us to monitor the redox behavior of both the active layer and the charge storage layer during cell operation. With this setup, we show that the redox behavior of each layer is highly dependent on the redox capacity ratio between the two films. We also demonstrate that, in principle, any electrochromic material that has a colorless state can serve as an optically inactive charge storage material if it is present in sufficient excess in an electrochromic cell. Additionally, by monitoring the redox behavior of each individual layer during cell operation, we show that performance loss in electrochromic cells during long-term stability testing is not necessarily due to an irreversible electrochemical or structural degradation of the active material or the charge storage layer. Rather we observe a drift in the oxidation state of both layers, suggesting that the losses are reversible, and could be mitigated through proper electrochemical control of the cells. The main benefit of an unbalanced configuration is the substantial lowering of the operating voltage without compromising switching time or the contrast as long as transparency of the charge storage material is maintained.

To achieve optimal performance in a conjugated polymer-based electrochemical device, i.e. for a supercapacitor to reach full depth of discharge or for an electrochromic device (ECD) to achieve maximum contrast, the two electrodes must be in different oxidation states when the device is assembled. Here, we evaluate the use of chemical oxidation as a scalable postprocessing method to adjust the redox state of polymer-coated electrodes. We evaluate how the extent of oxidation depends on both the redox properties of the conjugated polymer and on the choice of chemical oxidant, and how these parameters affect the functionality of the film. Comparing Ag(I) and Fe(III) oxidants, we find that it is not the oxidizing power that determines the extent of doping but rather the redox potentials of the polymers, with the more easily oxidized polymers doping to a higher extent. Because the polarity and surface energy of the polymer changes upon oxidation, we also show how a phosphonic acid surface pre-treatment improves interfacial adhesion between the polymer and a transparent oxide electrode (ITO). Finally, as a proof of principle, we demonstrate how chemical oxidation of the organic counter electrode a minimally color changing dioxypyrrole polymer enhances the device contrast of an ECD, confirming that this approach is a promising route toward high-throughput manufacturing of ECDs and other polymer-based electrochemical devices.

A vast majority of syringe pumps operate on stepper motors, which limits their effectiveness for precision fluid delivery using estimation algorithms. Such a system also hampers the ability to ascertain if the infusion or aspiration instruction has been correctly carried out in the event of power interruptions. To address this issue, a linear servo based actuator system is described to provide absolute indications of the plunger position. System performance in terms of linearity and reliability of plunger translation were verified using a camera tracking system with syringe capacities ranging from 3 to 50 ml and at syringe plunger speeds ranging from 1 to 6.6 mm/s when distilled water was used as the medium. In investigations involving more viscous liquids, the system revealed similarly linear characteristics with 50% glycerol-water (v/v), but cyclical stick-slip behavior with Freund's adjuvant.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplifies specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) targets whereby the reaction vessels are placed in high thermal inertia media and subjected to multiple cycles of discrete temperatures to effect denaturation, annealing and extension events. Precise temperature control and efficient heat transfer are crucial factors in achieving amplification reproducibility and reliability as well as in reducing the time required for PCR. Understanding the temperature distribution and transfer characteristics during PCR will facilitate system optimization to enhance the efficiency of DNA amplification. We describe a numerical thermal study investigating temperature profiles achieved using the classical method of manual transfer of PCR reaction vessels through a series of temperature-controlled media compared with that of a more recently reported method that displaces reaction vessels spatially by tilting through different temperature zones. It was found that while the classical method allows the reagent to achieve uniform temperature distribution, natural convection effects would necessitate translation speeds in excess of 150 mm/min in order to limit the reagent temperature drop to within 10 °C. With the tilt method, uniform temperature distributions as well as temperature settling times within 5 s could be attained. The simulation results demonstrated here indicate that the tilt method can be developed further to augment extreme PCR requiring less than 2s for each cycle.

The design of high bandgap electrochromic polymers (ECPs) that switch from a high energy absorbing colored state to a near-IR absorbing colorless state requires a challenging balance to be struck between achieving large changes in the absorption profile while maintaining sufficiently low oxidation potentials for use in full-color electrochromic devices. Previous studies on high bandgap ECPs have investigated structure–property relationships in dioxythiophenes copolymerized with various arylenes. Here, we expand this understanding by looking more closely at the effect of the dioxythiophene moiety as well as by varying the substituents on the arylene moiety. Three ECPs have been synthesized to perform this study with repeat units composed of electron-rich dimethoxyphenylene in alternation with dimers of 3,4-dialkoxy- and 3,4-propylenedioxythiophenes, yielding high gap polymers that are vibrant yellow or orange in the charge neutral state. The use of superhydrophilic surfaces for superwetting applications can be hampered by their wetting degradation over time. In this work, superhydrophilic surfaces were fabricated by graphene oxide (GO) deposition on roughened polyvinyl chloride (PVC) substrates. These surfaces were found to exhibit zero contact angle when enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was deposited on the surface immediately after GO was applied. However, when the GO-coated substrate was stored for 3 h, the surface displayed a contact angle of 54°. The main contact line spreading of the EGFP drop was more easily discernible using normal (500 lx, low glare and shadow free) lighting than with blue LED lighting in the dark. The average radius of the spreading main contact line was found to follow a power-law relationship that increased at a faster rate with higher relative humidity. Confocal imaging revealed rings of EGFP deposition following superwetting that is attributable to pinning around the islands of GO accumulation. Substrate superhydrophilic and superwetting properties can be preserved by adequate control of relative humidity. Relative humidity of 80 % was easily maintained for 150 min by incorporating a 20 μL water drop in a sealed 240-mL container.

A system devised to conduct Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in-flight on drones that uses the spatial displacement of capillary tubes on thermal blocks kept at 94 °C, 58 °C and 72 °C corresponding to cycling temperatures for denaturation, annealing and extension is demonstrated here. The use of acetal as the thermal block material reduced heat loss and the input power (within 18.5 W) needed to maintain the required temperatures. Tests showed that concentrations of samples down to 1.16 × 106 DNA copies/μL could be significantly and consistently detected above the background emission of the fluorescence signal intensity.

A drop-based approach to facilitate the remediation of methylene blue (MB) solution via catalytic degradation with silver nanowires on a superhydrophobic substrate with a 2 mm hole without fouling is presented here. Studies on the dynamical response of drop removal via pressure rate perturbation, showed greater elapsed times at the 7.61 μL/s air flowrate with 25 μL and 30 μL volume drops than at higher air flowrates used. These results are accounted for by the rate of air flow through the plastron, used to equilibrate the lowering of pressure in the transparent receptacle that tends to prevent drop dislodgement, being only able to operate up to a specific upper limit. A method that calculates the absorbance values based on the intensity spectrum of the nanowire solution as reference was found to reveal the time progress degradation of MB solution by spectrometry. It showed that a 25 μL drop of the MB solution could be degraded within 15 s using 0.25 mg of the silver nanowire.

Dry ice (solid CO2) remains highly useful when temperature-sensitive biological samples need to be cryogenically transported. CO2 released during the sublimation of dry ice can diffuse through gas permeable receptacle material or any defective seals resulting in potential sample acidification and compromised integrity. In addition, the quality of cryopreservation can be undermined once the dry ice is exhausted. The dry ice carrier design described here has been demonstrated to prevent sublimated CO2 from reaching the samples while maintaining storage temperature below −60 °C for 19 h. It is also equipped with microcontroller-based temperature monitoring for traceability and CO2 gas monitoring for safety.

The use of an inverted burette arrangement that allowed volume and time-course tracking of bubble movement via camera imaging is shown here to improve on the classical inverted jar (or beaker) method for measuring gases generated in small volumes and at slow rates (below 1 mL/s). In tests involving discrete gas volume measurements delivered at 0.57 mL/s, comparison with pre-set air volume delivered by a syringe pump showed high correspondence, linearity, and repeatability. Tests with continuous gas flows at 0.2, 0.32 and 0.57 mL/s revealed average bubble count versus volume trends that displayed high linearity to indicate that the bubble volumes (at any flowrate) were constant. The average bubble count versus time also showed linear trends and repeatability indicating that the time intervals between the appearance of any two bubbles (at a particular flowrate) were uniform. The analytical and simulated results helped to explain why bubble size determination by high speed camera recording for measuring gas volume and flowrate is fraught with inherent problems. An analysis using light ray tracing showed that flowrate determination using such an approach would necessitate complicated image correction when two cameras are used for simultaneous recording due to distortion effects resulting from refraction. A virtual gate approach involving the binarization of images recorded with a standard camera is shown to be more feasible in establishing the flowrate using bubble counting or finding the time interval between bubbles.

International audience; The switching time is one of the key parameters used to assess the performance of an electrochromic material or device. In spite of its importance, there is currently no standard for how this parameter is defined, and as a result, it is difficult to compare switching time data between different research groups, and to quantify and assess reported improvements. We propose a standard method for reporting electrochromic switching times, based on straightforward experimental fittings resulting in an analytical expression that can directly correlate obtainable optical contrast values with their corresponding switching times. This analytical expression makes it possible to unambiguously define the performance of an electrochromic material or device using two parameters: a full-switch contrast and a time constant.

Liquid marbles to separate wetting (silver nanowires) from non-wetting (graphite and talcum) particles is described here. Two types of liquid marbles are formed by coating the dry mixture test material on pendant or sessile drops. The silver nanowire particles are separated from the graphite or talcum shell by entering into the liquid core of the marbles. The liquid core is extracted into capillary tubes where the presence of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by a blue to colourless change arising from silver-mediated catalytic reduction of methylene blue and sodium borohydride solution. The use of an inclined rotating surface to coat the pendant drop was found to create liquid marbles in a more controllable manner. A platform tilt angle of 15o followed by rotation was found to provide more uniform albeit only partially coating the bottom of the pendant drop.
