Nowadays, the mitigation of damage to a ship caused by the underwater explosion attracts more and more attention from the modern ship designers. In this study, two kinds of scale tests were conducted to investigate the effects of polyurea coatings on the blast resistance of hulls subjected to underwater explosion. Firstly, small-scale model tests with different polyurea coatings were carried out. Results indicate that polyurea has a better blast resistance performance when coated on the front face, which can effectively reduce the maximum deflection of the steel plate by more than 20% and reduce the deformation energy by 35.7%–45.4%. Next, a full-scale ship (approximately 50 m × 9 m) under loadings produced by the detonation of 33 kg of spherical TNT charges was tested, where a part of the ship was coated with polyurea on the front face (8 mm + 24 mm) and not on the contrast area. Damage characteristics on the bottom were statistically analyzed based on a 3D scanning technology, indicating that polyurea contributes to enhancing the blast protection of the ship. However, damage results of this test were different from those of the small-scale tests. Moreover, the deformation area of the bottom with polyurea was greatly increased by 40.1% to disperse explosion energy, a conclusion that cannot be drown from the small-scale tests.

Two previously undescribed diarylheptanoids, diosniponol E (1) and F (2), and a new phenylhexanol derivative, (rel-2R,4R)-6-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-hexane-1,2,4-triol (3), together with seven known compounds, were isolated from the bulbils of Dioscorea opposita Thunb.. Their structures were elucidated by HRESIMS and 1D/2D NMR as well as by comparison with the literature, and absolute configurations of compounds 1 and 2 were deduced by comparison of their experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroic (ECD) spectra. All the isolated compounds were evaluated in vitro for their α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The results indicated that compounds 3 and 7 exhibited inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase with the IC50 values of 16.2 ± 2.2 and 8.7 ± 1.6 μM, respectively. Molecular docking experiments were performed to identify the probable binding mode of compound 7 in the binding sites of α-glucosidase and molecular dynamics simulations were performed to evaluate the stability over time of the main interactions observed in docking experiments.

The injection molding process of a mold with multiple cavities can reduce the mold space, but the process is complicated and the product is prone to warpage. In order to reduce the transparent parts warpage of such a mold, by optimizing injection molding process parameters, an optimization technique combining orthogonal experiment, Kriging model and an optimization algorithm is proposed. First, the orthogonal experiment is designed, based on Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) simulation results, while the significant factors affecting the warpage are selected. On this basis, the Kriging model is established to map the nonlinear function relationship between the significant factors and the warpage. Specifically in this paper, four types of correlation functions, affecting the model precision accuracy, are used to establish the Kriging model and the high-precision accuracy model is selected. A numerical optimization algorithm, direct search approach and global exploration method are used to optimize the model, so as to obtain the optimal injection molding parameters producing the minimum warpage. Finally, CAE simulation and experimental validation prove the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed optimization method.

Chain damage is a new phenomenon that occurs when a reactive jet impacts and penetrates multi-spaced plates. The reactive jet produces mechanical perforations on the spaced plates by its kinetic energy (KE), and then results in unusual chain rupturing effects and excessive structural damage on the spaced plates by its deflagration reaction. In the present study, the chain damage behavior is initially demonstrated by experiments. The reactive liners, composed of 26 wt%Al and 74 wt% PTFE, are fabricated through a pressing and sintering process. Three reactive liner thicknesses of 0.08 CD, 0.10 CD and 0.12 CD (charge diameter) are chosen to carry out the chain damage experiments. The results show a chain rupturing phenomenon caused by reactive jet. The constant reaction delay time and the different penetration velocities of reactive jets from liners with different thicknesses result in the variation of the deflagration position, which consequently determines the number of ruptured plates behind the armor. Then, the finite-element code AUTODYN-3D has been used to simulate the kinetic energy only-induced rupturing effects on plates, based on the mechanism of behind armor debris (BAD). The significant discrepancies between simulations and experiments indicate that one enhanced damage mechanism, the behind armor blast (BAB), has acted on the ruptured plates. Finally, a theoretical model is used to consider the BAB-induced enhancement, and the analysis shows that the rupturing area on aluminum plates depends strongly upon the KE only-induced pre-perforations, the mass of reactive materials, and the thickness of plates.

Enhanced damage to the full-filled fuel tank, impacted by the cold pressed and sintered PTFE/Al/W reactive material projectile (RMP) with a density of 7.8 g/cm3, is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The fuel tank is a rectangular structure, welded by six pieces of 2024 aluminum plate with a thickness of 6 mm, and filled with RP-3 aviation kerosene. Experimental results show that the kerosene is ignited by the RMP impact at a velocity above 1062 m/s, and a novel interior ignition phenomenon which is closely related to the rupture effect of the fuel tank is observed. However, the traditional steel projectile with the same mass and dimension requires a velocity up to 1649 m/s to ignite the kerosene. Based on the experimental results, the radial pressure field is considered to be the main reason for the shear failure of weld. For mechanism considerations, the chemical energy released by the RMP enhances the hydrodynamic ram (HRAM) effect and provides additional ignition sources inside the fuel tank, thereby enhancing both rupture and ignition effects. Moreover, to further understand the enhanced ignition effect of RMP, the reactive debris temperature inside the kerosene is analyzed theoretically. The initiated reactive debris with high temperature provides effective interior ignition sources to ignite the kerosene, resulting in the enhanced ignition of the kerosene.

Alternative splicing (AS) is emerging as a critical co-transcriptional regulation for plants in response to environmental stresses. Although multiple splicing factors have been linked to the salt-sensitive signaling network, the molecular mechanism remains unclear. We discovered that a conserved serine/arginine-rich (SR)-like protein, SR45a, as a component of the spliceosome, was involved in post-transcriptional regulation of salinity tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Furthermore, SR45a was required for the AS and messenger RNA (mRNA) maturation of several salt-tolerance genes. Two alternatively spliced variants of SR45a were induced by salt stress, full-length SR45a-1a and the truncated isoform SR45a-1b, respectively. Lines with overexpression of SR45a-1a and SR45a-1b exhibited hypersensitive to salt stress. Our data indicated that SR45a directly interacted with the cap-binding complex (CBC) subunit cap-binding protein 20 (CBP20) which mediated salt-stress responses. Instead of binding to other spliceosome components, SR45a-1b promoted the association of SR45a-1a with CBP20, therefore mediating salt-stress signal transduction pathways. Additionally, the mutations in SR45a and CBP20 led to different salt-stress phenotypes. Together, these results provide the evidence that SR45a-CBP20 acts as a regulatory complex to regulate the plant response to salt stress, through a regulatory mechanism to fine-tune the splicing factors, especially in stressful conditions.

Force chains based mesoscale simulation is conducted to investigate the response behavior of aluminum-polytetrafluoroethylene (Al-PTFE) granular composites under a low-velocity impact. A two-dimensional model followed the randomly normal distribution of real Al particles size is developed. The dynamic compressive process of Al-PTFE composites with varied Al mass fraction is simulated and validated against the experiments. The results indicate that, force chains behavior governed by the number and the size of agglomerated Al particles, significantly affects the impact response of the material. The failure mode of the material evolves from shear failure of matrix to debonding failure of particles with increasing density. A high crack area of the material is critical mechanism to arouse the initiation reaction. The damage maintained by force chains during large plastic strain builds up more local stresses concentration to enhance a possible reaction performance. In addition, simulation is performed with identical mass fraction but various Al size distribution to explore the effects of size centralization and dispersion on the mechanical properties of materials. It is found that smaller sized Al particle of composites are more preferred than its bulky material in ultimate strength. Increasing dispersed degree is facilitated to create stable force chains in samples with comparable particle number. The simulation studies provide further insights into the plastic deformation, failure mechanism, and possible energy release capacity for Al-PTFE composites, which is helpful for further design and application of reactive materials.

With the development of iris recognition technology, sensors of iris images acquisition are being constantly developed and updated. Re-register users every time a new sensor is deployed is time-consuming and complicated, especially in applications with large-scale registered users. Therefore, it is a challenging problem to choose the common recognition model which is effective for multi-source heterogeneous iris recognition(MSH-IR). The paper proposes a efficient neural network model of stacked Convolutional Deep Belief Networks-Deep Belief Network (CDBNs-DBN) for MSH-IR. The main improvements are two parts: firstly, this model uses the region-by-region extraction method and positions the convolution kernel through the offset of the hidden layer to locate the effective local texture feature structure. Secondly, the model uses DBN as a classifier in order to reduce the reconstruction error through the negative feedback mechanism of the auto-encoder. Experimental results have been implemented on publicly available IIT Delhi iris database, which is captured by three different iris captured sensors. Experiments shows the model performs strong robustness performance and recognition ability.

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have achieved unprecedented results in the fields of pattern recognition and image processing. CNN methods have also been gradually applied to iris recognition. However, in the case of insufficient training samples, training deep CNN models is prone to overfitting. In order to solve the above problem, this paper proposes an iris recognition method based on fine-tune SquIrisNet. When the pre-trained SqueezNet is migrated to the iris dataset, the fully connected layers are used instead of the convolutional layer and the global pooling layer, then the parameters are adjusted using the error back propagation algorithm, and finally the images are classified by the Softmax classifier. The fully connected layers added in this model can play the role of “firewall” in the fine-tune process, retaining the model complexity to a certain extent. The experimental results on the IIT Delhi and SDUMLA-HMT iris databases show that the proposed method has higher correct recognition rate, faster convergence speed and better robustness than AlexNet and VGGNet.

Anthocyanins are a type of natural pigment that have high potential for development and utilization in regions like food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, with nitrogen and phosphorus starvation possibly promoting their accumulation in grapes. However, it remains unclear whether such starvation impacts the grape callus, or how the co-starvation of nitrogen and phosphorus affects the biosynthesis of anthocyanins. Here, we investigated how nitrogen starvation, phosphorus starvation, and the co-starvation of these two elements affects the synthesis of anthocyanins in the callus of grape skin. Results showed that separate starvation of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as nitrogen and phosphorus co-starvation, inhibited callus growth, while significantly promoting the accumulation of anthocyanins. However, co-starvation did not facilitate anthocyanin biosynthesis during the later stages of callus growth. qRT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of VvUFGT and VvMYBA1 was closely related to anthocyanin accumulation in the callus under nitrogen and phosphorus starvation. Besides, we also confirmed that the abscisic acid signaling pathway was involved in anthocyanin accumulation as well as callus resistance under adverse conditions. This study provides a basis for investigating the regulatory mechanisms of anthocyanin synthesis in grapes, as well as theoretical support for the production of anthocyanins by callus culture. Even though nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies have been reported to promote anthocyanin biosynthesis in grapevine berries, whether the same deficiencies also induce anthocyanin accumulation in grape callus and whether nitrogen and phosphorus co-deficiency enhances this induction have yet to be reported. Therefore, the present study to investigate the effects of nitrogen starvation, phosphorus starvation, and nitrogen and phosphorus co-starvation on anthocyanin accumulation and ABA signaling in grape callus.

Atriplex canescens is a C4 shrub with excellent adaptation to saline and arid environments. Our previous study showed that the secretion of excessive Na+ into leaf salt bladders is a primary strategy in salt tolerance of A. canescens and external 100 mM NaCl can substantially stimulate its growth. To investigate whether NaCl could facilitate Atriplex canescens response to drought stress, five-week-old seedlings were subjected to drought stress (30% of field water capacity) in the presence or absence of additional 100 mM NaCl. The results showed that, under drought stress, the addition of NaCl could substantially improve the growth of A. canescens by increasing leaf relative water content, enhancing photosynthetic activity and inducing a significant declined leaf osmotic potential (Ψs). The addition of NaCl significantly increased Na+ concentration in leaf salt bladders and the Na+ contribution to leaf Ψs, while had no adverse effects on K+ accumulation in leaf laminae. Therefore, the large accumulation of Na+ in salt bladders for enhancing osmotic adjustment (OA) ability is a vital strategy in A. canescens responding to drought stress. In addition, the concentration of free proline, bataine and soluble sugars exhibited a significant increase in the presence of NaCl under drought stress, and the betaine contribution to leaf Ψs was significantly increased by additional NaCl compared with that under drought treatment alone, suggesting that compatible solutes are also involved in OA in addition to functioning as protectants to alleviate water deficit injury.

We investigated whether genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB) influences lung adenocarcinoma development among never-smokers using TB genome-wide association study (GWAS) results within the Female Lung Cancer Consortium in Asia. Pathway analysis with the adaptive rank truncated product method was used to assess the association between a TB-related gene-set and lung adenocarcinoma using GWAS data from 5512 lung adenocarcinoma cases and 6277 controls. The gene-set consisted of 31 genes containing known/suggestive associations with genetic variants from previous TB-GWAS. Subsequently, we followed-up with Mendelian Randomization to evaluate the association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma using three genome-wide significant variants from previous TB-GWAS in East Asians. The TB-related gene-set was associated with lung adenocarcinoma (p = 0.016). Additionally, the Mendelian Randomization showed an association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.66, p = 0.027). Our findings support TB as a causal risk factor for lung cancer development among never-smoking Asian women.

The xerophyte Pugionium cornutum can accumulate large amounts of Cl– in its shoots for osmotic adjustment, and this is linked with improved hydration status and photosynthesis under salt and drought conditions., Chloride (Cl–) is pervasive in saline soils, and research on its influence on plants has mainly focused on its role as an essential nutrient and its toxicity when excessive accumulation occurs. However, the possible functions of Cl– in plants adapting to abiotic stresses have not been well documented. Previous studies have shown that the salt tolerance of the xerophytic species Pugionium cornutum might be related to high Cl– accumulation. In this study, we investigated the Cl–-tolerant characteristics and possible physiological functions of Cl– in the salt tolerance and drought resistance of P. cornutum. We found that P. cornutum can accumulate a large amount of Cl– in its shoots, facilitating osmotic adjustment and turgor generation under saline conditions. Application of DIDS (4,4´-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2´-disulfonic acid), a blocker of anion channels, significantly inhibited Cl– uptake, and decreased both the Cl– content and its contribution to leaf osmotic adjustment, resulting in the exacerbation of growth inhibition in response to NaCl. Unlike glycophytes, P. cornutum was able to maintain NO3– homeostasis in its shoots when large amounts of Cl– were absorbed and accumulated. The addition of NaCl mitigated the deleterious effects of osmotic stress on P. cornutum because Cl– accumulation elicited a strong osmotic adjustment capacity. These findings suggest that P. cornutum is a Cl–-tolerant species that can absorb and accumulate Cl– to improve growth under salt and drought stresses.

Microwave dielectric ceramics are considered to be one of the key materials of dielectric resonators/filters and have wide application prospects in fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems. Here we prepared two kinds of low-sintering temperature and high-performance microwave dielectric ceramics with monoclinic rock salt structure by adding a small amount of V2O5 and 0.6CuO–0.4B2O3 sintering aids to Li2Ti0.75(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.25O3 (LTMN0.25). The sintering temperature of LTMN0.25 ceramics with 2 wt% V2O5 and 1 wt% 0.6CuO–0.4B2O3 additions could be effectively reduced from 1170 °C to below 910 °C due to the liquid phase effects resulting from the additives. Typically, high performance microwave dielectric properties can be obtained in the LTMN0.25 + 2 wt% V2O5 ceramic sintered at 910 °C for 2 h, with a er ∼ 20.7, a Q × f ∼ 60 460 GHz and a TCF ∼ +4.3 ppm °C−1. The best dielectric properties of er ∼ 19.9, a Q × f ∼ 60 950 GHz and a TCF ∼ −6.1 ppm °C−1 were obtained for the samples with 1 wt% 0.6CuO–0.4B2O3 sintered at 870 °C for 2 h. A prototype dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) was fabricated by LTMN0.25 + 1 wt% 0.6CuO–0.4B2O3 ceramic. The antenna resonated at 10.02 GHz with a bandwidth ∼175 MHz at −10 dB transmission loss (S11). Moreover, the chemical compatibility with Ag powder suggests that the LTMN0.25 + 2 wt% V2O5 and LTMN0.25 + 1 wt% 0.6CuO–0.4B2O3 ceramics may be suitable candidates for low temperature co-fired ceramic technology applications.

Dielectric energy storage capacitors are critical components widely used in electronic equipment and power systems due to their advantages of ultrahigh power density and high voltage. Herein, a novel core–shell BaTiO3@MgO (BT@MO) nanostructure was fabricated, in which highly insulating MgO was directly coated on a continuous ferroelectric nanoparticle BaTiO3 shell through a chemical precipitation method to improve the breakdown strength and electric displacement under high electric field. A large electric displacement (D ≈ 9.8 μC cm−2 under 571.4 MV m−1) was observed along with a high discharge energy density (Ud ≈ 19.0 J cm−3) for BT@MO/P(VDF-HFP) composites, which was 187% higher than that for a P(VDF-HFP) film when the filler content was 3 wt%. The enhancement rate of Ud in this study achieved the highest level among the reported results. It was revealed that the highly insulating MgO shell can enhance the breakdown strength by preventing charge injection from electrodes and impeding the development of electrical stress during the breakdown process, as confirmed by the leakage current measurements and the finite element simulations. The core–shell BT@MO structured filler provided an effective way to improve the energy storage properties of the polymer-based dielectrics.

Iris recognition is recognized as one of the most reliable and efficient technique for human identification in the biometric fields. The Gabor filter and local binary pattern (LBP) are widely adopted for feature extraction in face recognition. However, it is difficult to achieve high recognition accuracy when the Gabor filter or LBP is directly applied to iris texture representation. This paper presents an effective iris feature descriptor, which first uses 2D-Gabor filter to extract multi-orientation imaginary (MOI) feature, and then applies uniform LBP for region feature encoding. Thus, the MOI feature-by-point energy is converted into that of the uniform LBP histogram-by-block, during which the distributions of the intra- and inter-class are greatly widened. Such process largely improves distinguishability of MOI features. Finally, the Bhattacharyya distance is adopted for matching. Experimental results on CASIA and JLU iris image databases show that this method performs better for combining MOI features and LBP encoding as compared to their individual function.

Eight extraction technologies were used to extract sweet tea (Lithocarpus litseifolius (Hance) Chun) crude polysaccharides (STPs), and their chemical, structural, and biological properties were studied and compared. Results revealed that the compositions, structures, and biological properties of STPs varied dependent on different extraction technologies. Protein-bound polysaccharides and some hemicellulose could be extracted from sweet tea with diluted alkali solution. STPs extracted by deep-eutectic solvents and diluted alkali solution exhibited the most favorable biological properties. Moreover, according to the heat map, total phenolic content was most strongly correlated with biological properties, indicating that the presence of phenolic compounds in STPs might be the main contributor to their biological properties. To the best of our knowledge, this study reports the chemical, structural, and biological properties of STPs, and the results contribute to understanding the relationship between the chemical composition and biological properties of STPs.

The clouds in Southern Hemisphere extratropical cyclones generated by the GFDL climate model are analyzed against MODIS, CloudSat, and CALIPSO cloud and precipitation observations. Two model versions are used: one is a developmental version of “AM4,” a model GFDL that will utilize for CMIP6, and the other is the same model with a different parameterization of moist convection. Both model versions predict a realistic top-of-atmosphere cloud cover in the southern oceans, within 5% of the observations. However, an examination of cloud cover transects in extratropical cyclones reveals a tendency in the models to overestimate high-level clouds (by differing amounts) and underestimate cloud cover at low levels (again by differing amounts), especially in the post–cold frontal (PCF) region, when compared with observations. In focusing only on the models, it is seen that their differences in high and midlevel clouds are consistent with their differences in convective activity and relative humidity (RH), but the same is not true for the PCF region. In this region, RH is higher in the model with less cloud fraction. These seemingly contradictory cloud and RH differences can be explained by differences in the cloud-parameterization tuning parameters that ensure radiative balance. In the PCF region, the model cloud differences are smaller than either of the model biases with respect to observations, suggesting that other physics changes are needed to address the bias. The process-oriented analysis used to assess these model differences will soon be automated and shared.

Magnetic sensor arrays have been widely used in current measurement, due to their advantages of small size, low power consumption, high sensitivity, wide bandwidth, and large dynamic range. However, they all assume that the conductor is perpendicular to the plane of the sensor array and the error introduced by un-perpendicularity has not been eliminated until now. In this paper, a 3-D tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor array scheme with its correction algorithm for eccentric, inclined current-carrying conductor is proposed. The simulation comparison of the relative error caused by the inclined angle between 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D TMR sensor arrays is performed, where the maximum errors are 25%, 20.5%, and 1.39%. It is obvious that the correction algorithm of 3-D TMR sensor array can significantly improve the accuracy. Four 3-D TMR sensors are used in the experimental prototype to verify the accuracy and reliability of the correction algorithm.

Background: Metals exposure from natural environment and pollution have been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, whether associations existing between plasma multiple metals and incident cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is unknown. Objectives: We conducted a prospective cohort study to investigate whether plasma levels of metals are associated with incident CVD risk in patients with T2D. Methods: In a prospective study of 3897 type 2 diabetes embedded in the Dongfeng–Tongji cohort, fasting blood samples were collected in 2008 at baseline and in 2013 in the first follow-up period. Plasma concentrations of 23 metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The associations between plasma metal concentrations and CVD risk in patients with T2D were investigated with Cox proportional hazards models. Results: During an average of 6.2 years follow-up, 1114 participants developed CVD. In the single-metal models adjusting for established cardiovascular risk factors, plasma zinc and selenium levels were negatively and strontium was positively associated with incident CVD risk in patients with T2D. Similar results were obtained in the multiple-metal model, the HRs (95% CIs) for zinc, selenium, and strontium comparing extreme quartiles were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.65–0.93; P trend = 0.011), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.64–0.91; P trend = 0.001), and 1.51 (95% CI: 1.26–1.81; P trend

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) metabolites was related to heart rate variability (HRV) reduction and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and ASCVD was also affected by HRV. However, the mediating role of HRV in the association between PAHs exposure and ASCVD risk was largely unknown. We aimed to investigate whether the relation of PAHs exposure with ASCVD risk was mediated by HRV among coke oven workers. A total of 1100 subjects with complete data were qualified in the current study. We measured 12 urinary PAHs metabolites by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and HRV indices by 3-channel digital Holter monitors. The associations between urinary PAHs metabolites, HRV indices, and ASCVD risk were explored using generalized linear models or multivariate logistic regression models. A mediation analysis was conducted to examine the role of HRV on the association between PAHs exposure and ASCVD risk. We found that urinary 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHNa), 2-OHNa, and total PAH metabolites (ΣOH-PAH) were dose-responsive associated with increased risk of ASCVD. In the present work, a systematic study on microwave properties of Ca1-xBixMo1-xVxO4 (0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) solid solution ceramics synthesized by using the traditional solid-state reaction method was conducted. A scheelite structured solid solution was formed in the composition range 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.5. We successfully prepared a microwave dielectric ceramic Ca0.66Bi0.34Mo0.66V0.34O4 with a temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) near to zero and a low sintering temperature by using (Bi, V) substituted (Ca, Mo) in CaMoO4 to form a solid solution. The Ca0.66Bi0.34Mo0.66V0.34O4 ceramic can be well sintered at only 870 °C and exhibits good microwave dielectric properties with a permittivity (er) ˜21.9, a Qf ˜18,150 GHz (at 7.2 GHz) (Q = quality factor = 1/dielectric loss; f = resonant frequency), a TCF ˜ + 0.1 ppm/°C. The chemical compatibility with silver indicated that the Ca0.66Bi0.34Mo0.66V0.34O4 ceramic might be a good candidate for the LTCC applications.

Herein, an original exciton energy transfer-based sensitive fluorescence sensor for the determination of Hg2+ has been designed through DNA aptamer-programmed self-assembly of CdTe quantum dots (QDs). In this work, CdTe QDs were applied as fluorescence signal source. The two pieces of T-rich aptamer played a role as molecular recognition probes which could bind to the target Hg2+ specifically. The extent of Hg2+-triggered self-assembly of QDs depended on the concentration of Hg2+, which resulted in an exciton energy transfer effect between QDs, giving an obvious fluorescence signal decrease and red-shift of the fluorescent peak. Based on this principle, we could detect the Hg2+ in two different signal modes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 3.33 nM. The proposed sensing method exhibited its application in detecting Hg2+ in real water samples with satisfactory performance. The results indicated that this proposed sensor will be of great potential in biological and analytical fields.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the associations of multiple metals with chromosome damage, and further explore the mediation roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their potentials in lung cancer. Methods: We determined the urinary levels of 23 metals, lymphocytic micronucleus (MN) frequency, and ten candidate miRNAs in plasma among 365 healthy workers. Poisson and linear regression models were conducted to analyze the associations of urinary metals with MN frequency and miRNAs, respectively. The mediation effects of miRNAs on the metal-MN frequency associations were assessed by causal mediation analysis. Additionally, the levels of effective metal and miRNAs were measured in 43 pair-wised tumor and normal lung tissues. Results: The urinary level of titanium was inversely associated with MN frequency after Bonferroni correction [frequency ratio (FR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) = 0.88 (0.82, 0.94), p = 5.0 × 10−4]. A doubling in urinary titanium was associated with 14.72%–38.17% decrease in plasma miRNAs. After multiple comparison, miR-24-3p and miR-28-5p significantly mediated 24.8% (7.7%, 70.0%) and 20.4% (5.7%, 52.0%) of the association between titanium and MN frequency (pmediation = 0.002 and 0.004, respectively). Background: All humans are now co-exposed to multiple toxic chemicals, among which metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of special concern as they are often present at high levels in various human environments. They can also induce similar early health damage, such as genetic damage, oxidative stress, and heart rate variability (HRV). Exposure to metals, PAHs, and their combined pollutants can alter microRNA (miRNA) expression patterns. Objectives: To explore the associations of metal-PAH co-exposure with miRNA expression, and of the associated miRNAs with early health damage. Methods: We enrolled 360 healthy male coke oven workers and quantified their exposure levels of metals and PAHs by urinary metals, urinary monohydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs), and plasma benzo[a]pyrene-r-7,t-8,t-9,c-10-tetrahydotetrol-albumin (BPDE-Alb) adducts, respectively. A systematic investigation of the Li2Ti1-x(Mg1/3Nb2/3)xO3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.35) solid solutions synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction method is reported in this work. In the composition range of 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.25, a monoclinic rock salt structured solid solution was formed. When x increased to 0.3, a phase transition from monoclinic to cubic phase, along with an order-disorder phase transition, was observed. With x increased from 0.1 to 0.35, the microwave permittivity (εr) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) of the Li2Ti1-x(Mg1/3Nb2/3)xO3 ceramics decreased linearly from 21.0 to 18.6, +27.1 to −19.4 ppm/°C, respectively. The Li2Ti0.75(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.25O3 ceramic sintered at 1170 °C shows high performance of microwave dielectric properties with a εr ∼19.6, a Qf (Q = quality factor = 1/dielectric loss; f = resonant frequency) ∼109,770 GHz (at 7.7 GHz) and a near zero TCF ∼ + 1.2 ppm/oC. Moreover, the burying sintering process can reduce the volatilization of lithium so that the porosity of Li2Ti0.75(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.25O3 ceramic was reduced effectively, which made Li2Ti0.75(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.25O3 ceramic promising for future applications. Telomere length (TL) is an index of cellular aging and can predict the incidences of many age-related diseases. Change of TL might be affected by environmental pollution and individual's genetic background. In this cohort study, we aimed to evaluate the associations between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and longitudinal TL shortening, and investigate whether genetic variations in TERT-CLPTM1L can modify these associations. We measured the baseline concentrations of twelve urinary PAH metabolites and genotyped six variants at TERT-CLPTM1L among 1243 coke-oven workers. The relative leukocyte TL was detected in both baseline and follow-up (4 years later) visits. The TL shortening were estimated by TL decline and TL ratio. We found that the urinary level of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) had significant dose-response relationships with increased TL decline [β(95%CI) = 0.078(0.023, 0.133), P = 0.005] and TL ratio [β(95%CI) = 0.096(0.037, 0.155), P = 0.002]. Besides, urinary 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHNa) was marginally dose-related with elevated TL decline [β(95%CI) = 0.053(-0.001, 0.107), P = 0.055] and TL ratio [β(95%CI) = 0.057(-0.002, 0.116), P = 0.058]. Analyses of TERT-CLPTM1L variants showed that the rs401681 and rs465498 could modify the effect of 1-OHP on increasing TL decline (Pinteraction = 0.012 and 0.035, respectively) and TL ratio (Pinteraction = 0.014 and 0.067, respectively), which were pronounced among rs401681TT and rs465498CC carriers, but not seen among rs401681TC + CC and rs465498CT + TT carriers. In conclusion, elevated exposure to PAHs can accelerate the TL shortening and this effect can be modified by TERT-CLPTM1L variants. These results may add potential evidence for gene-environment interactions on dynamic changes of telomere length. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and uncover the underlying mechanisms.

Heat‐shock proteins (HSPs), which are encoded by conserved gene families in plants, are crucial for development and responses to diverse stresses. However, the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) HSPs have not been systematically classified, especially those involved in protecting plants from disease. Here, we classified 119 DnaJ (Hsp40) proteins (TaDnaJs; encoded by 313 genes) and 41 Hsp70 proteins (TaHsp70s; encoded by 95 genes) into six and four groups, respectively, via a phylogenetic analysis. An examination of protein sequence alignment revealed diversity in the TaDnaJ structural organization, but a highly conserved J‐domain, which was usually characterized by an HPD motif followed by DRD or DED motifs. The expression profiles of HSP‐encoding homologous genes varied in response to Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) and Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) stress. A quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR) analysis indicated a lack of similarity in the expression of DnaJ70b, Hsp70‐30b, and Hsp90‐4b in Bgt‐infected resistant and susceptible wheat. Furthermore, a direct interaction between DnaJ70 and TaHsp70‐30 was not detected in a yeast two‐hybrid (Y2H) assay, but screening cDNA library and Y2H evidence supported that TaHsp70‐30 not only interacts directly with heat‐shock transcription factor (HSF) A9‐like protein but also interacts with TaHsp90‐4 by HSP organizing protein. This study revealed the structure and expression profiles of the HSP‐encoding genes in wheat, which may be useful for future functional elucidation of wheat HSPs responses to fungal infections.

Background Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a cardiac emergency with high mortality. Exposure to high copper (Cu) concentration has been linked to ACS. However, whether DNA methylation contributes to the association between Cu and ACS is unclear. Methods We measured methylation level at > 485,000 cytosine-phosphoguanine sites (CpGs) of blood leukocytes using Human Methylation 450 Bead Chip and conducted a genome-wide meta-analysis of plasma Cu in a total of 1243 Chinese individuals. For plasma Cu-related CpGs, we evaluated their associations with the expression of nearby genes as well as major cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, we examined their longitudinal associations with incident ACS in the nested case-control study. Results We identified four novel Cu-associated CpGs (cg20995564, cg18608055, cg26470501 and cg05825244) within a 5% false discovery rate (FDR). DNA methylation level of cg18608055, cg26470501, and cg05825244 also showed significant correlations with expressions of SBNO2, BCL3, and EBF4 gene, respectively. Higher DNA methylation level at cg05825244 locus was associated with lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and higher C-reactive protein level. Furthermore, we demonstrated that higher cg05825244 methylation level was associated with increased risk of ACS (odds ratio [OR], 1.23; 95% CI 1.02–1.48; P = 0.03). Conclusions We identified novel DNA methylation alterations associated with plasma Cu in Chinese populations and linked these loci to risk of ACS, providing new insights into the regulation of gene expression by Cu-related DNA methylation and suggesting a role for DNA methylation in the association between copper and ACS.

The NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2 (NAC) transcription factors (TFs) constitute the largest plant-specific TF superfamily, and play important roles in various physiological processes, including stress responses. Stripe rust and powdery mildew are the most damaging of the fungal diseases that afflict wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, studies on Triticum aestivum NAC (TaNAC)s&rsquo, role in resistance to the two diseases are still limited, especially in an overall comparative analysis of TaNACs responding or not to fungal stress. In the present study, 186 TaNAC transcripts were obtained from the resistant hexaploid wheat line N9134 under fungal stress, and 180 new transcripts were submitted to GenBank. Statistical results show that 35.1% (54/154) of TaNAC genes responded to stripe rust and powdery mildew in the seedling stage. &ldquo, Abnormal&rdquo, coding transcripts of differentially expressed (DE)-TaNAC genes in wheat responding to fungal stress were found in a significantly higher proportion (24/117 vs. 8/69, p = 0.0098) than in non-DE-NACs. This hinted that the alternative splicing of TaNAC genes was active in transcriptional or post-transcriptional regulation during plant-pathogen interactions. Full-length NAC proteins were classified into nine groups via phylogenetic analysis. Multiple-sequence alignment revealed diversity in the C-terminal structural organization, but the differentially expressed gene (DEG)-encoding proteins enriched in Subgroups VI and VII were conserved, with WV[L/V]CR amino acid residues in Motif 7 following the NAM domain. Our data that showed TaNAC TFs responded to fungal disease, which was affected by expression levels and by the regulation of multifarious transcript variants. These data for TaNAC responses to stripe rust and/or powdery mildew and their numerous structural variants provide a good resource for NAC function&ndash, mechanism analysis in the context of biotic-stress tolerance in wheat.

There is limited evidence on the relationships between plasma levels of multiple metals and risk of incident cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We examined the associations between plasma levels of 12 metals (iron, copper, zinc, selenium, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, arsenic, cadmium, and lead) and cancer risk in 4573 T2DM patients using Cox proportional hazards models. With a median follow-up of 10.2 years, 541 incident cancers were identified. The multiple-metals model revealed that each 1-SD increase in ln-transformed plasma copper (HR: 1.14; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.27) and lead (HR:1.20; 95%CI:1.03, 1.39) were significantly associated with increased cancer incidence while each 1-SD increase in ln-transformed plasma zinc (HR: 0.82; 95%CI: 0.71, 0.96) and chromium (HR: 0.88; 95%CI: 0.82, 0.94) were significantly associated with decreased cancer incidence. When all participants were further stratified into four subgroups by the quartile levels (Q1–4) of plasma metals, manganese showed significant positive associations with cancer incidence in the upper two quartiles (P trend = 0.003) while nickel showed significant negative associations with cancer incidence in Q2 and 4 groups (P trend = 0.033) compared with participants in Q1 group. Collectively, monitoring of metal levels in diabetic patients needs to be strengthened, which is of great significance for the prevention of incident cancer.

In this study, the effects of microwave-assisted extraction conditions on antioxidant capacity of sweet tea (Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd.) were studied and the antioxidants in the extract were identified. The influences of ethanol concentration, solvent-to-sample ratio, microwave power, extraction temperature and extraction time on Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) value, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value and total phenolic content (TPC) were investigated by single-factor experiments. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the interaction of three parameters which had significant influences on antioxidant capacity including ethanol concentration, solvent-to-sample ratio and extraction time. The optimal conditions for the extraction of antioxidants from sweet tea were found as follows&mdash, ethanol concentration of 58.43% (v/v), solvent-to-sample ratio of 35.39:1 mL/g, extraction time of 25.26 min, extraction temperature of 50 ℃ and microwave power of 600 W. The FRAP, TEAC and TPC values of the extract under the optimal conditions were 381.29 &plusmn, 4.42 &mu, M Fe(II)/g dry weight (DW), 613.11 &plusmn, 9.32 &mu, M Trolox/g DW and 135.94 &plusmn, 0.52 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g DW, respectively. In addition, the major antioxidant components in the extract were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), including phlorizin, phloretin and trilobatin. The crude extract could be used as food additives or developed into functional food for the prevention and management of oxidative stress-related diseases.

We characterized a new cycloartane glycoside, herein known as aspleniumside F (1), along with five known compounds as kaempferol-3-O-[(6-O-(E)-feruloyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-D-galacopyranoside (2), quercetin-3-O-[(6-O-(E)-feruloyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), kaempferol-3-O-[(6-O-(E)-caffeoyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), kaempferol-3-O-[(6-O-(E)-caffeoyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), and kaempferol-3-O-[(6-O-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), from Asplenium ruprechtii Sa. Kurata, a folk medicine widely used to treat Thromboangiitis obliterans in China, Japan, and Korea. Based on spectroscopic, mainly 1D-, 2D-NMR and (+)-HR-ESI-MS, analyses as well as through comparisons with previous reports, its chemical structure was determined as 3β,24,30-tri-β-D-glucopyranosyl-23,25-dihydroxycycloartane (= (23R,24R)-3β,24-bis-(β-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-23,25-dihydroxy-9β-9,19-cyclolanostan-29-yl β-D-glucopyranoside). According to the 1 H coupling constant of anomeric protons and co-TLC of the acid hydrolysate with D-glucose, all three glycoside groups in 1 were revealed as β-D-glucopyranosyl. Furthermore, SOD-like antioxidant activity evaluation via IC50 of 12.43, 6.78, 9.12, 6.94 and 4.85 μM revealed that compounds 2-6 had bioactivity.

We propose a method for achieving THz ultra-broadband coherent absorption using the anti-reflection theory of metamaterials. The metamaterial absorber consists of a periodic array of electric ring resonators with a multilayered structure which form the desired refractive index dispersion and provide continuous anti-reflection over a wide frequency range. The destructive interference mechanism and resonance absorption of the absorber are determined by simulation analysis and numerical simulation. Simulation results show that the absorption bandwidth is almost 8.02 THz (absorption rate >90%) over the entire terahertz band (0.1 THz–10 THz). This design provides an effective and viable method for constructing broadband absorbers for stealth technology and the construction of enhanced transmittance devices.

Growing interest and recent evidence have identified long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) as the potential regulatory elements for eukaryotes. LncRNAs can activate various transcriptional and post-transcriptional events that impact cellular functions though multiple regulatory functions. Recently, a large number of lncRNAs have also been identified in higher plants, and an understanding of their functional role in plant resistance to infection is just emerging. Here, we focus on their identification in crop plant, and discuss their potential regulatory functions and lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network in plant pathogen stress responses, referring to possible examples in a model plant. The knowledge gained from a deeper understanding of this colossal special group of plant lncRNAs will help in the biotechnological improvement of crops.

International audience; We compare top‐of‐atmosphere (TOA) radiative fluxes observed by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and simulated by seven general circulation models forced with observed sea‐surface temperature (SST) and sea‐ice boundary conditions. In response to increased SSTs along the equator and over the eastern Pacific (EP) following the so‐called global warming “hiatus” of the early 21st century, simulated TOA flux changes are remarkably similar to CERES. Both show outgoing shortwave and longwave TOA flux changes that largely cancel over the west and central tropical Pacific, and large reductions in shortwave flux for EP low‐cloud regions. A model's ability to represent changes in the relationship between global mean net TOA flux and surface temperature depends upon how well it represents shortwave flux changes in low‐cloud regions, with most showing too little sensitivity to EP SST changes, suggesting a “pattern effect” that may be too weak compared to observations.

Exposure to lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) were related to lung function impairment, and this association may be modified by genetic variants in oxidative stress response. Here we enrolled 1243 coke-oven workers in a prospective cohort who were followed up from 2010 to 2014, assessed the associations of Pb and Cd exposure with 4-year lung function impairment, and further explored the interaction effects of Pb with 2664 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 345 oxidative stress related genes. Urinary levels of Pb, Cd, and two oxidative stress biomarkers [8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) for lipid peroxidation and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) for oxidative DNA damage] were measured at baseline only and their lung function levels were measured both at baseline and at the end of follow-up. Each 10-fold increase in urinary Pb was associated with −159 (95%CI: −254, −64.2) mL and −3.63% (95%CI: −6.48%, −0.78%) changes in FEV1 and percent predicted FEV1 (ppFEV1), respectively. But none significant associations were observed for Cd. NQO1 rs2917670 showed significant interaction with Pb on elevated FEV1 decline after multiple comparison (Pint=1.54 × 10−5). In addition, urinary Pb increased with 8-iso-PGF2α and the rs2917670-C could significantly decrease NQO1 expression in normal lung tissues. These findings suggested the gene-environmental interaction of NQO1 rs2917670 and Pb exposure on the reduction of FEV1. The effect of Pb exposure on elevated oxidative stress and the decreased expression of antioxidant enzyme NQO1 caused by rs2917670-C allele may partly explain the underlying biological mechanism.

Background Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are considered to be the major bioactive components in L. barbarum. Due to the considerable health benefits of LBPs, and the significant research interest in LBPs, quality evaluation of LBPs and their related products is imperative for ensuring their efficacy and safety. The bioactivities of polysaccharides are closely associated with their physicochemical properties, which can be easily monitored via chemical techniques. Therefore, analysis of physicochemical properties is a more straightforward and viable approach for the quality control of polysaccharides. Scope and approach In this review, special techniques for the structural characterization of LBPs are summarized and discussed. In addition, quality evaluation approaches of LBPs that have never been emphasized are highlighted herein. Furthermore, industrial applications of LBPs are reviewed and discussed. Key findings and conclusions High-performance anion-exchange chromatography coupled with pulsed amperometric detection is one of the most effective techniques for analysis of both acidic and neutral LBPs. Size-exclusion chromatography coupled with multi-angle laser light scattering and refractive index detection is able to determine absolute molecular weights, chain conformations, and contents of LBPs. Fingerprinting analysis and saccharide mapping analysis are effective approaches for quality evaluation of LBPs. However, the lack of appropriate quality evaluation approaches indicates an unreliable regulation of LBPs and their related products. This reveals the deficiency in the quality control of commercial products. Thus, the development of reliable approaches for pharmacological activity-based quality control of LBPs and their related products must be extensively investigated.

Objective: Telomere is required for maintaining chromosome stability and genome integrity, while telomere length is sensitive to environmental stressors. We aimed to identify the effects of multiple metals co-exposure as well as their joint effects with TERT-CLPTM1L variants on leukocyte telomere length (LTL). Methods: This study included 842 workers from a coke-oven plant, of whom plasma concentrations of 23 metals and LTL were determined. Genetic variations in TERT-CLPTM1L were genotyped by using the Global Screening Array. Multipollutant-based statistical methods, including the Bonferroni-correction, backward elimination procedure, and LASSO penalized regression analysis, were used to select the LTL-associated metals. Generalized linear regression models were used to evaluate the joint effects of TERT-CLPTM1L variants with positive metal on LTL. Results: Each 1% increase in plasma concentration of manganese (Mn) was significantly associated with a 0.153% increase in LTL [β(95%CI) = 0.153(0.075, 0.230), P 4.21 μg/L) showed joint effects on increasing LTL. Conclusions: Our study revealed the independent and positive association between plasma Mn and LTL when accounting for co-exposure to other metals. This effect can be further enhanced by TERT-CLPTM1L variants. These results may advance our understanding of the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors on telomere length. Further experimental studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

The quantum thermalization of the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium open-system cases is sdudied, in which the two subsystems, a two-level system and a single-mode bosonic field, are in contact with either two individual heat baths or a common heat bath. It is found that in the individual heat-bath case, the JC model can only be thermalized when either the two heat baths have the same temperature or the coupling of the JC system to one of the two baths is turned off. In the common heat-bath case, the JC system can be thermalized irrespective of the bath temperature and the system-bath coupling strengths. The thermal entanglement in this system is also studied. A \emph{counterintuitive} phenomenon of \emph{vanishing} thermal entanglement in the JC system is found and proved., 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

This paper mainly investigates the commonly considered trajectory tracking problem for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on a sliding mode control (SMC). The quadrotor system is obtained by the composition of two subsystems, that’s, a fully actuated subsystem(FAS) and an underactuated subsystem(UAS).Then, an improved SMC method is proposed to weaken the chattering phenomenon resulted from the switching control action and perform precisely the position and attitude trajectory tracking. Finally, some simulation results are performed and shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed control approach.

Background: Human are often simultaneously exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals, yet relatively little is known regarding their co-exposure effects on oxidative damage. Genetic factors and the gene-environment interactions can also determine the severity of oxidative damage. Four polymorphisms in microRNA (miRNA) genes (rs11614913, rs2292832, rs2910164, and rs3746444) have been well-studied to be associated with oxidative damage-related diseases. Objective: To investigate the influences of PAH-metal co-exposure, four polymorphisms, and their interactions on oxidative damage levels. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 1385 coke oven workers. We quantified exposure levels of PAHs and metals by urinary monohydroxy-PAHs, plasma benzo[a]pyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide-albumin adducts, and urinary metals, respectively, and measured oxidative damage levels by 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine. We also genotyped four polymorphisms. Results: In multiple-pollutant models, 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine were associated with multiple PAH exposure biomarkers, as well as with multiple metals (ptrend 7.75%, false discovery rate-adjusted pinteraction ≤ 2.25 × 10−5). This study describes the performance of two Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) in simulating the climatologies of planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameters, with a particular focus on the diurnal cycles. The two models differ solely in the PBL parameterization: one uses a prescribed K-profile parameterization (KPP) scheme with an entrainment parameterization, and the other employs a turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) scheme. The models are evaluated through comparison with the reanalysis ensemble, which is generated from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) twentieth-century reanalysis (ERA-20C), ERA-Interim, NCEP CFSR, and NASA MERRA, and the following systematic biases are identified. The models exhibit widespread cold biases in the high latitudes, and the biases are smaller when the KPP scheme is used. The diurnal cycle amplitudes are underestimated in most dry regions, and the model with the TKE scheme simulates larger amplitudes. For the near-surface winds, the models underestimate both the daily means and the diurnal amplitudes; the differences between the models are relatively small compared to the biases. The role of the PBL schemes in simulating the PBL parameters is investigated through the analysis of vertical profiles. The Sahara, which is suitable for focusing on the role of vertical mixing in dry PBLs, is selected for a detailed analysis. It reveals that compared to the KPP scheme, the heat transport is weaker with the TKE scheme in both convective and stable PBLs as a result of weaker vertical mixing, resulting in larger diurnal amplitudes. Lack of nonlocal momentum transport from the nocturnal low-level jets to the surfaces appears to explain the underestimation of the near-surface winds in the models.

The traditional polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/Al reactive material liner shaped charge generally produces insufficient penetration depth, although it enlarges the penetration hole diameter by chemical energy release inside the penetration crater. As such, a novel high-density reactive material liner based on the PTFE matrix was fabricated, and the corresponding penetration performance was investigated. Firstly, the PTFE/W/Cu/Pb high-density reactive material liner was fabricated via a cold pressing/sintering process. Then, jet formation and penetration behaviors at different standoffs were studied by pulse X-ray and static experiments, respectively. The X-ray results showed that the PTFE/W/Cu/Pb high-density reactive material liner forms an excellent reactive jet penetrator, and the static experimental results demonstrated that the penetration depth of this high-density reactive jet increased firstly and then decreased by increasing the standoff. When the standoff was 1.5 CD (charge diameter), the penetration depth of this reactive jet reached 2.82 CD, which was significantly higher than that of the traditional PTFE/Al reactive jet. Moreover, compared with the conventional metal copper jet penetrating steel plates, the entrance hole diameter caused by this high-density reactive jet improved 29.2% at the same standoff. Lastly, the chemical reaction characteristics of PTFE/W/Cu/Pb reactive materials were analyzed, and a semi-empirical penetration model of the high-density reactive jet was established based on the quasi-steady ideal incompressible fluid dynamics theory.

In order to realize resource utilization of industrial tungsten residue and treatment of heavy metal wastewater in mining and metallurgical area of south China, a novel ceramsite was prepared with the main raw materials of diatomite and tungsten residue. The adsorption behavior of copper ions in solution on the ceramsite was investigated. Results indicated that the surface of the newly-developed ceramsite was rough and porous. There were lots of pores across the ceramsite from inner to outside. MnFe2O4 was one of the main components of the ceramsite. The Cu2+ adsorption capacity by the ceramsite reached 9.421 mg/g with copper removal efficiency of 94.21% at 303 K, initial Cu2+ concentration of 100 mg/L and dosage of 0.5 g after 300 min adsorption. With increase of ceramsite dosage, the total adsorption amount of Cu2+ increased, but the adsorption capacity decreased. The adsorption capacity increased with the increase of solution pH. The isothermal adsorption of Cu2+ by the ceramsite fitted the Freundlich model better. The adsorption mainly occurred on a heterogeneous surface, and was a favorable process. The adsorption process closely followed the pseudo-second kinetic equation. In initial stage of wastewater treatment, the adsorption process should be controlled mainly by diffusion, and the removal of Cu2+ can be improved by enhancing agitation.

Three low bandgap polymers (PSDTBT-DFDT, PSDTfBT-DFDT, and PSDTffBT-DFDT) based on fluorine and alkylthio-substituted benzothiadiazole-quaterthiophene alternating units are synthesized and applied in polymer solar cells. The effects of fluorination and thio-alkylation on photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the polymers are comparatively investigated. The results indicate that PSDTfBT-DFDT and PSDTffBT-DFDT show better light-harvesting abilities, lower HOMO energy levels, and better morphology than that of PSDTBT-DFDT. Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic devices based on the three polymers as donor materials were fabricated. The power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 6.94% for PSDTfBT-DFDT and 7.50% for PSDTffBT-DFDT were attained, respectively, both of which are higher than that of PSDTBT-DFDT (4.48%) due to the increase in the numbers of fluorine atoms. Bi(Sc 1/3 Mo 2/3 )O 4 ceramics were prepared via solid state reaction method. It crystallized with an ordered scheelite-related structure (a = 16.9821(9) A, b = 11.6097(3) A, c = 5.3099(3) A and β = 104.649(2)°) with a space group C12/C1, in which Bi 3+ , Sc 3+ and Mo 6+ are -8, -6 and -4 coordinated, respectively. Bi(Sc 1/3 Mo 2/3 )O 4 ceramics were densifiedat 915 °C, giving a permittivity (e r ) 24.4, quality factor (Qf, Q = 1/dielectric loss, f = resonant frequency) ~48, 100 GHz and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) -68 ppm/°C. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that there was only a bulk response for conductivity with activation energy (E a ) ~0.97 eV, suggesting the compound is electrically and chemically homogeneous. Wide band dielectric spectra were employed to study the dielectric response of Bi(Sc 1/3 Mo 2/3 )O 4 from 20 Hz to 30 THz. e r was stable from 20 Hz to the GHz region, in which only ionic and electron displacive polarization contributed to the e r .
