Coastal ecosystem is vulnerable to heavy metal contamination. The northern Hangzhou Bay is under intensifying impact of anthropogenic activities. To reveal the heavy metal pollution status in the coastal environment of the Hangzhou Bay, a long-term investigation into the heavy metal contamination during 2011 to 2016 was initiated. Seawater and sediment samples of 25 locations depending on the sewage outlet locations in the northern Hangzhou Bay were collected to analyze the concentrations and temporal and spatial distribution of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As. Pollution condition, ecological risk, and potential sources were additionally analyzed. Results show that the annual mean concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As were 2.13-4.59, 0.212-1.480, 7.81-20.34, 0.054-0.279, 0.026-0.090, and 1.08-2.57 μg/L in the seawater, and were 16.34-28.35, 16.25-26.33, 67.32-97.61, 0.084-0.185, 0.029-0.061, and 6.09-14.08 μg/L in the sediments. A decreasing trend in Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Hg concentrations and an increasing trend in As of the seawater were observed. However, in the sediment, the heavy metals demonstrated a rising trend, except for Hg. The single-factor pollution index showed an increasing trend in Cd and As in the seawater, depicting an enhanced pollution of Cd and As, while in the sediments, Cu, Pb, and As were in pollution-free level (average Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) values below 0) in general, and only occasional slight pollution occurred in individual years, e.g., As with 0.403 in 2016. The mean Igeo values of Cd ranged from - 0.865 to 0.274 during 2011 to 2016, indicating that the pollution level of Cd was slight, but is likely to increase in the forthcoming years. The level of heavy metal contamination in sediments was low in 2011 (5.853) and 2012 (5.172), and moderate during 2013 to 2016 (in the range of 6.107 to 7.598), while the degree of potential ecological risk was low in the study period, except moderate in 2013 (125.107). The highest contamination degree and potential ecological risk appeared in 2013 (Cd = 7.598; RI = 125.107), while Cd and Hg contributed over 75% of the ecological risk. Overall, the results show low pollution level and low potential ecological risk in the northern Hangzhou Bay; however, more attention should be paid to the potential ecological risk due to Hg and Cd. Iron and steel industry emission is an important industrial source of air pollution. However, little is known about the relationship between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted and regional air pollution. In this study, VOCs emissions from a typical iron and steel plant in Yangtze River Delta (YRD, China) were monitored from April 2018 to March 2019. The ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation of VOCs were calculated to reveal the influence of VOCs emissions on regional ozone and particulate pollution, and the sensitivity analysis approach was performed to explore the qualitative and quantitative relationships between VOCs and O3, as well as VOCs and PM2.5. The VOCs concentration was 93.76 ± 266.97 ppbv during the study. The OFP was 760.08 ± 2391.90 μg m−3, and aromatics were the predominant precursors, contributing 54.05% of the total OFP. Furthermore, the SOA estimated by fractional aerosol coefficient (FAC) and time-resolved (TR) methods were 6.032 ± 13.347 μg m−3 and 0.971 ± 4.650 μg m−3, accounting for 8.65–26.39% (13.78 ± 7.46%) and 1.55–4.20% (2.22 ± 1.23%) of the PM2.5 concentrations, respectively. The results indicated that VOCs were more sensitive to O3 pollution in high pollution domains, whereas VOCs were more sensitive to PM2.5 pollution in low pollution domains. We concluded that reducing VOCs emissions might be effective in alleviating photochemical pollution episodes in areas around iron and steel industry, and the haze pollution occurred in these regions may be caused by the primary emission of PM, and the contribution of SOA was relatively small.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are a form of toxic pollutant that can be transported across the globe and accumulated in the bodies of wildlife and humans. A nationwide geographical investigation considering atmospheric PFAAs via a passive air sampler (PAS) based on XAD (a styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer) was conducted in 23 different provinces/municipalities/autonomous regions in China, which provides an excellent chance to investigate their occurrences, spatial trends, and potential sources. The total atmospheric concentrations of 13 PFAAs (n=268) were 6.19–292.57 pg m−3, with an average value of 39.84±28.08 pg m−3, which were higher than other urban levels but lower than point source measurements. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the dominant PFAA (20.6 %), followed by perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFPeA). An increasing seasonal trend of PFAA concentrations was shown as summer < autumn < spring < winter, which may be initiated by stagnant meteorological conditions. Spatially, the content of PFAAs displayed a declining gradient trend of central China > northern China > eastern China > north-eastern China > south-western China > north-western China > southern China, and Henan contributed the largest proportion of PFAAs. Four sources of PFAAs were identified using a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, including PFOS-based products (26.1 %), products based on PFOA and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA; 36.6 %), degradation products of fluorotelomer-based products (15.5 %), and an unknown source (21.8 %).

With the implementation of the ultra-low emission policy in China, emission factors (EFs) of power plant pollutants are constantly changing. Emission inventories developed using the recommended EFs contain high levels of uncertainty and it is difficult to achieve a high temporal resolution. Detailed sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) emission data based on a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) were obtained from 33 units at 13 power plants in Shanghai in 2017. The data were used to develop an hourly unit-based emission inventory and to devise updated EFs for coal-fired power plants. Emissions of SO 2 , NOx, and PM typically met the ultra-low emission limit, with total emissions of SO 2 , NOx, and PM of 2895.0, 5348.3, and 503.8 tons, respectively. Emission proportions of SO 2 and NOx for 300–600, 600–1000, and above 1000 MW units were similar, while the emission proportion of PM decreased with an increase in unit capacity. Emissions of SO 2 , NOx, and PM displayed similar monthly variations, peaking in winter and summer. Diurnal hourly variations of SO 2 , NOx, and PM emissions displayed a bimodal trend, with higher emissions at night on weekends than on weekdays. EFs based on CEMS (EF C ) of SO 2 , NOx, and PM were 0.10, 0.36, and 0.04 g kg −1 of coal, respectively, which were one or two orders of magnitude lower than the widely-used EFs and 4–30 times lower than EFs based on the mass balance approach. After replacing the recommended fixed decontamination efficiencies with individually fitted values, the calculated EFs were consistent with the corresponding EF C and discrepancies were further reduced. The new inventory and updated EFs will enable a better understanding of the temporal variations of power plant emissions and reduce the uncertainty caused by the overestimation of EFs after the implementation of ultra-low emissions technology.

The intensive monitoring of air pollutants has led to the acquisition of vast quantities of data. Traditional quality control methods based on existing knowledge may be inefficient because of our limited understanding regarding the interaction of human activities and stochastic environmental factors. Moreover, traditional methods for outlier detection may be misleading because of the existence of valid outliers and invalid inliers. In this research, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are developed to identify instrument failure based on current and historical observations. Two structures, i.e., multilayer perceptrons and recurrent networks, are trained using 50,000 hourly data points labeled by human reviewers. The most conservative model identified 57.5% of the invalid sulfur compound observations and 44.9% of the invalid nitrogen compound observations. By setting a more liberal threshold, these values increased to 76.0% and 79.7%, respectively. Except for SO2, the ANNs outperformed the traditional methods for data quality control, as demonstrated with a plausibility test, a test of temporal consistency and a residential analysis. Compared with the test of temporal consistency, which was the most effective traditional method studied, the true positive rates of the ANNs were 19.4% to 29.5% higher for all pollutants except SO2, given the same false positive rates. The results indicate the effectiveness of ANNs for data quality control even without supplementary information. Methods for performance improvement are discussed.

Cold stratification is commonly used for breaking seed dormancy in plants. However, the effects of cold stratification on dormancy release and its physiological characteristics are still unclear in rice. Dormancy release by different periods (6, 12, 18 and 24 days) of cold stratification (4 °C) was conducted using japonica Jiucaiqing (Oryza sativa L) in this study. Physiological characteristics, including hormones, antioxidant enzyme and α-amylase activities, were further estimated in imbibed seeds after 12 and 24 days cold stratification. Seed dormancy of Jiucaiqing was completely released by cold stratification for 18 and 24 days. The expressions of the hormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA) and indole acetic acid (IAA), metabolism related genes OsCYP707A5, OsCYP707A7, OsGA20ox1, OsGA20ox2, OsGH3-2, OsGH3-7 and OsGH3-8 were significantly increased while OsNCED3 and OsZEP significantly decreased in imbibed seeds by cold stratification, which resulted in the rapid decline of ABA and the increases of GA3 and IAA. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), were significantly increased in imbibed seeds by cold stratification, which resulted in a slight increase of H2O2 level. The ratios of GA/ABA, GA/IAA and IAA/ABA and H2O2 level were gradually enhanced in imbibed seeds with cold stratification, which might contribute to the increase of α-amylase activity to promote dormancy release in rice.

Human activities have huge impact on the aquatic environment. Knowledge on sources of the contaminants provides guidelines to determine the ideal location and maintenance of monitoring stations, thus advancing environmental monitoring and pollution control. Factor analysis (FA) may be the most popular method for source identification, but the results should be affirmed. Following this logic, in this research, firstly the potential sources were determined, and secondly the contaminant concentrations in the source regions and the non-source regions were compared. To identify the potential sources, 75 meteorological, economic and social indicators were used to group the study regions. FA was used to reduce dimensionality and factor scores were calculated. The grouping was based on the weighted factor scores while the weight was variance explained by each factor respectively. Each group was supposed to correspond to a factor; that is, a potential source. The results indicated that the concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus and arsenic in wastewater were significantly different between groups. Animal husbandry, mining and/or energy industry were the main sources of COD, ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus; animal husbandry, mining, energy industry, and/or heavy and chemical industry were the main sources of phosphorus; humid climate and/or secondary industry were the main sources of arsenic.

Lariats are formed by excised introns, when the 5′ splice site joins with the branchpoint (BP) during splicing. Although lariat RNAs are usually degraded by RNA debranching enzyme 1, recent findings in animals detected many lariat RNAs under physiological conditions. By contrast, the features of BPs and to what extent lariat RNAs accumulate naturally are largely unexplored in plants. Here, we analyzed 948 RNA sequencing data sets to document plant BPs and lariat RNAs on a genome-wide scale. In total, we identified 13,872, 5199, 29,582, and 13,478 BPs in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), rice (Oryza sativa), and maize (Zea mays), respectively. Features of plant BPs are highly similar to those in yeast and human, in that BPs are adenine-preferred and flanked by uracil-enriched sequences. Intriguingly, ∼20% of introns harbor multiple BPs, and BP usage is tissue-specific. Furthermore, 10,580 lariat RNAs accumulate in wild-type Arabidopsis plants, and most of these lariat RNAs originate from longer or retroelement-depleted introns. Moreover, the expression of these lariat RNAs is accompanied by the incidence of back-splicing of parent exons. Collectively, our results provide a comprehensive map of intron BPs and lariat RNAs in four plant species and uncover a link between lariat turnover and splicing.

Mercury is a global neurotoxic pollutant, which can be globally transported and bioaccumulated in the food chain. Iron–steel production is one of the most significant sources of anthropogenic atmospheric mercury emission, while information on this source is scarce. Hourly gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and particle bound mercury (PBM) were studied inside (IP) and at the boundary (BP) of a typical iron–steel plant in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China from September 2016 to August 2017. The GEM concentrations were 0.97–503.1 and 0.05–112.6 ng/m3 at the IP and BP sites, respectively, while PBM concentrations were one to four orders of magnitude higher than urban and suburban ambient levels. Several lines of evidences indicated that PBM was mainly originated from the iron–steel manufacturing process, especially from sintering and coke-making processes in this iron–steel plant. However, a combined emission effect contributed to GEM variation. The receptor model of positive matrix factorization (PMF) showed that local direct emissions (coal combustion, industrial activity, vehicle exhaust, and secondary evaporation from polluted soil) contributed 51.3% of the total GEM concentration variation. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) models clearly showed that air masses moving from areas surrounding YRD had the highest concentrations of atmospheric mercury. These results provided evidence that iron–steel manufacturing emissions have a considerable effect on regional atmospheric mercury concentrations, especially PBM.

The bioaccumulation of erythromycin (ETM) and cadmium (Cd) in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) and subsequent toxicity on pathological changes and enzymatic activities were investigated during 21-day exposure to ETM, Cd, and Cd + ETM mixture. The bioaccumulation of Cd and ETM residues in crab tissues decreased as gill > hepatopancreas > muscle > ovary, with higher Cd bioaccumulation than ETM. The highest Cd bioaccumulation in crab reached 1.15 mg/g dry weight in gill and 461.29 μg/g in hepatopancreas, on the 14th day of Cd treatment. Cd exposure promoted the bioaccumulation of ETM in four tissues. ETM exposure caused tubular vacuolization in epithelial and edema and degeneration of hepatic ducts in hepatopancreas, and disconnected gill epithelial layer and indistinctly cellular structure in gill. During Cd exposure, mitochondria acted as a main biomarker to identify the damage, including reduced and swollen mitochondria, and broken mitochondrial structure. Moreover, Chinese mitten crab showed defence capability against ETM and Cd exposure by physiological adjustment of metabolic enzymes glutathione S-transferase activity.

BackgroundRice growth is frequently affected by salinity. When exposed to high salinity, rice seed germination and seedling establishment are significantly inhibited. With the promotion of direct-seeding in Asia, improving rice seed germination under salt stress is crucial for breeding.ResultsIn this study, anindicalandrace Wujiaozhan (WJZ) was identified with high germinability under salt stress. A BC1F2population derived from the crossing WJZ/Nip (japonica, Nipponbare)//Nip, was used to quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping for the seed germination rate (GR) and germination index (GI) under H2O and 300 mM NaCl conditions. A total of 13 QTLs were identified, i.e. ten QTLs under H2O conditions and nine QTLs under salt conditions. Six QTLs,qGR6.1,qGR8.1,qGR8.2,qGR10.1,qGR10.2andqGI10.1were simultaneously identified under two conditions. Under salt conditions, three QTLs,qGR6.2,qGR10.1andqGR10.2for GR were identified at different time points during seed germination, which shared the same chromosomal region withqGI6.2,qGI10.1andqGI10.2for GI respectively. TheqGR6.2accounted for more than 20% of phenotypic variation under salt stress, as the major effective QTL. Furthermore,qGR6.2was verified via the BC2F2population and narrowed to a 65.9-kb region with eleven candidate genes predicted. Based on the microarray database, five candidate genes were found with high transcript abundances at the seed germination stage, of whichLOC_Os06g10650andLOC_Os06g10710were differentially expressed after seed imbibition. RT-qPCR results showed the expression ofLOC_Os06g10650was significantly up-regulated in two parents with higher levels in WJZ than Nip during seed germination under salt conditions. Taken together, it suggests thatLOC_Os06g10650, encoding tyrosine phosphatase family protein, might be the causal candidate gene forqGR6.2.ConclusionsIn this study, we identified 13 QTLs from a landrace WJZ that confer seed germination traits under H2O and salt conditions. A major salt-tolerance-specific QTLqGR6.2was fine mapped to a 65.9-kb region. Our results provide information on the genetic basis of improving rice seed germination under salt stress by marker-assisted selection (MAS).

Microbial communities are important indicators of aquatic ecosystem health, responsible for functional roles sustaining the ecosystem such as nutrient cycling, as well as environmental problems. Urbanized estuaries are vulnerable intersections between terrestrial and marine ecosystems and are susceptible to pressure and perturbation from both natural processes and human activities over time. The response by microbial communities towards changes in the environment should be closely monitored and studied. In this study, microbial communities in brackish intertidal sediments, sampled seasonally over a year along the coast of Yangtze River estuary, were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Potential compositional and functional changes in microbial communities resulting from temporal variation and associated physiochemical gradients in the environment were studied and notable patterns were observed over time. Summer season was recorded with the lowest microbial community α-diversity. For β-diversity, spatiotemporal differentiation in community structures was recorded with seasonal clustering. Proteobacteria was recorded as the most dominant phylum among all sampling sites throughout the year but its relative abundance showed no temporal changes. Instead, relative abundances of phyla Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Verrucumicrobia were found to differ significantly over time, generally favoring the wet Spring and Summer. In contrast, temporal variation was observed for the class Deltaproteobacteria and some of the corresponding sulfate/sulfur-reducing bacterial genera, favoring the dry Autumn and Winter. However, there were no major temporal changes in ecological functions contributed by microbial communities throughout the study period. While results from redundancy analysis showed that the subtle changes in pH in the environment had the greatest impact on microbial community composition, the variation it explained remained relatively low. Alternatively, precipitation, distinguishing the dry and wet seasons of the subtropical monsoon climate zone, was suggested to be another potential key factor influencing microbial community composition and their relative abundances. The present study provides new data and insights on the impact of temporal variation on microbial community composition and ecological function in an urbanized estuarine ecosystem.

To investigate the air quality change during the COVID-19 pandemic, we analyzed spatiotemporal variations of six criteria pollutants in nine typical urban agglomerations in China using ground-based data and examined meteorological influences through correlation analysis and backward trajectory analysis under different responses. Concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2 and CO in urban agglomerations respectively decreased by 18%-45% (30%-62%), 17%-53% (22%-39%), 47%-64% (14%-41%), 9%-34% (0%-53%) and 16%-52% (23%-56%) during Lockdown (Post-lockdown) period relative to Pre-lockdown period. PM2.5 pollution events occurred during Lockdown in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebe (BTH) and Middle and South Liaoning (MSL), and daily O3 concentration rose to grade Ⅱ standard in Post-lockdown period. Distinct from the nationwide slump of NO2 during Lockdown period, a rebound (∼40%) in Post-lockdown period was observed in Cheng-Yu (CY), Yangtze River Middle-Reach (YRMR), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). With slightly higher wind speed compared with 2019, the reduction of PM2.5 (51%-62%) in Post-lockdown period is more than 2019 (15%-46%) in HC (Harbin-Changchun), MSL, BTH, CP (Central Plain) and SP (Shandong-Peninsula), suggesting lockdown measures are effective to PM2.5 alleviation. Although O3 concentrations generally increased during the lockdown, its increment rate declined compared with 2019 under similar sunlight duration and temperature. Additionally, unlike HC, MSL and BTH, which suffered from additional (> 30%) air masses from surrounding areas after the lockdown, the polluted air masses reaching YRD and PRD mostly originated from the long-distance transport, highlighting the importance of joint regional governance.

To control the spread of COVID-19, China has imposed national lockdown policies to restrict the movement of its population since the Chinese New Year of January 2020. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the changes of pollution sources in Shanghai during the COVID-19 lockdown; a high-resolution emission inventory of typical pollution sources including stationary source, mobile source, and oil and gas storage and transportation source was established based on pollution source data from January to February 2020. The results show that the total emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were 9520.2, 37,978.6, 2796.7, and 7236.9 tons, respectively, during the study period. Affected by the COVID-19 lockdown, the mobile source experienced the largest decline. The car mileage and oil sales decreased by about 80% during the COVID-19 lockdown (P3) when compared with those during the pre-Spring Festival (P1). The number of aircraft activity decreased by approximately 50%. The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on industries such as iron and steel and petrochemicals was less significant, while the greater impact was on coatings, chemicals, rubber, and plastic. The emissions of SO2, NOx, PM2.5, and VOCs decreased by 11%, 39%, 37%, and 47%, respectively, during P3 when compared with those during P1. The results show that the measures to control the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic made a significant contribution to emission reductions. This study may provide a reference for other countries to assess the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on emissions and help establish regulatory actions to improve air quality. To investigate chemical characteristics, abatement mechanisms and regional transport of atmospheric pollutants during the COVID-19 outbreak control period in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China, the measurements of air pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on non-control period (NCP, 24 December 2019–23 January 2020) and control period (CP, 24 January–23 February 2020) were analyzed at the urban Pudong Supersite (PD) and the regional Dianshan Lake Supersite (DSL). Due to the stricter outbreak control, the levels of PM2.5 and VOCs, and the occurrence frequencies of haze-fog episodes decreased substantially from NCP to CP, with average reduction rates of 31.6%, 38.9% and 35.1% at PD, and 34.5%, 50.7% and 37.9% at DSL, respectively. The major source for PM2.5 was secondary sulfate & nitrate in both periods, and the emission control of primary sources such as coal burning and vehicle exhaust decreased the levels of precursors gas sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which highly contributed to the abatement of PM2.5 from NCP to CP. The higher levels of ozone at both PD and DSL on CP might be due to the weak nitrogen monoxide titration, low relative humidity and high visibility compared with NCP. Vehicle exhaust and fugitive emission from petrochemical industry were the major contributors of ambient VOCs and their decreasing activities mainly accounted for VOCs abatement. Moreover, the high frequency of haze-fog events was closely impacted by medium-scale regional transport within Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. Therefore, the decreasing regional transported air pollutants coincided with the emission control of local sources to cause the abatement of haze-fog events in YRD region on CP. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in commercial applications as antimicrobial agents, but there have recently been increasing concerns raised about their possible environmental and health impacts. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to two sizes of AgNP, 4 and 10 nm, through a continuous exposure from 4 to 96 h post-fertilisation (hpf), to study their uptake, impact and molecular defense responses. Results showed that zebrafish embryos were significantly impacted by 72 hpf when continuously exposed to 4 nm AgNPs. At concentrations above 0.963 mg/L, significant in vivo uptake and delayed yolk sac absorption was evident, at 1.925 mg/L, significantly reduced body length was recorded compared to control embryos. Additionally, 4 nm AgNP treatment at the same concentration resulted in significantly upregulated hypoxia inducible factor 4 (HIF4) and peroxisomal membrane protein 2 (Pxmp2) mRNA expression in exposed embryos 96 hpf. In contrast, no significant differences in terms of larvae body length, yolk sac absorption or gene expression levels were observed following exposure to 10 nm AgNPs. These results demonstrated that S4 AgNPs are available for uptake, inducing developmental (measured as body length and yolk sac area) and transcriptional (specifically HIF4 and Pxmp2) perturbations in developing embryos. This study suggests the importance of particle size as one possible factor in determining the developmental toxicity of AgNPs in fish embryos.

Petroleum related emissions are the major anthropogenic sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which served as important precursors for secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, little is known about the relationship among VOCs emissions from petrochemical industries, SOA formation, and regional PM2.5. In this paper, VOCs emitted from a petrochemical industry in Yangtze River Delta (YRD, China) were continuously monitored by an online gas chromatography-photo ionization detector/flame ionization detector (GC-PID/FID) system. Results showed that the total concentration of 68 VOCs species was 151.0 ± 155.6 ppbv, and ethylene, ethane, 2-methylpentane, chloroform, 2,3-dimethyl-butane and propane were the richest species. SOA yield calculated by time-resolved approach was 7.18 ± 10.97 μg m−3, accounted for 3.35–86.4% of the corresponding PM2.5 concentration, which was a bit higher than previously reported values. VOCs-sensitiveness (VOCs-S) coefficient was adopted to investigate the quantitative relationship between VOCs and PM2.5, found VOCs were more sensitive to PM2.5 in clean domains than in polluted domains. An exponential function was fitted (y = 3.94x0.293 – 3.62, r2 = 0.816) between VOCs-S coefficient versus specific-to-background PM2.5 ratio for aromatic hydrocarbon. VOCs emitted from petrochemical industry had influence on regional PM2.5 in this study, and reducing petrochemical emissions might be effective in alleviating haze episodes.

Aircraft engine emissions during landing and take-off cycle are commonly estimated on the basis of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) promulgated calculation model and emission parameters; however, the ICAO certified parameters are generally not applicable for an individual airport. In this study, the operation times, fuel and emission parameters of 8 aircraft models during taxi phase at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) are analyzed with the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) data, and compared with corresponding values referenced by the ICAO. The results show perceptible discrepancies between the SHA-specific and ICAO certified values. The taxi-out times at SHA are considerably overestimated (up to 35.3%) by ICAO for all the analyzed aircraft models, whereas the taxi-in durations are highly close to the ICAO referenced value with a variation within -6.3% to 9.7%. In the majority of cases, the localized fuel flows and emission indices (EIs) are overvalued by ICAO, and the extent of overestimation can be as large as 21.6% and 28.3%, respectively. Variabilities in operation times, fuel and emission parameters are also characterized depending on aircraft types. Additionally, as a novel attempt, the effect of engine aging on EIs is explored and no significant correlation has been detected, indicating that other factors may affect the EIs dominantly over engine age. The resulting SHA-specific emission parameters are significant towards a precise emission quantification and modeling of impacts on air quality and health.

Summary Seed vigour is an imperative trait for the direct seeding of rice. Isopropylmalate synthase (IPMS) catalyses the committed step of leucine (Leu) biosynthesis, but its effect on seed vigour remains unclear. In this study, rice OsIPMS1 and OsIPMS2 was cloned, and the roles of OsIPMS1 in seed vigour were mainly investigated. OsIPMS1 and OsIPMS2 catalyse Leu biosynthesis, and Leu feedback inhibits their IPMS activities. Disruption of OsIPMS1 resulted in low seed vigour under various conditions, which might be tightly associated with the reduction of amino acids in germinating seeds. Eleven amino acids that associated with stress tolerance, GA biosynthesis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle were significantly reduced in osipms1 mutants compared with those in wide type (WT) during seed germination. Transcriptome analysis indicated that a total of 1209 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were altered in osipms1a mutant compared with WT at the early germination stage, wherein most of the genes were involved in glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, protein processing, pyruvate, carbon, fructose and mannose metabolism. Further analysis confirmed that the regulation of OsIPMS1 in seed vigour involved in starch hydrolysis, glycolytic activity and energy levels in germinating seeds. The effects of seed priming were tightly associated with the mRNA levels of OsIPMS1 in priming seeds. The OsIPMS1 might be used as a biomarker to determine the best stop time‐point of seed priming in rice. This study provides novel insights into the function of OsIPMS1 on seed vigour and should have practical applications in seed priming of rice.

Aerosol-associated non-polar organic compounds (NPOCs), including 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 30 n-alkanes, 2 iso-alkanes, 5 hopanes and 5 steranes, were identified and quantified in PM2.5 samples using the thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS) method. The samples were mainly collected in autumn and winter in a typical city of eastern China. The total concentrations of NPOCs were 31.7–388.7 ng m−3, and n-alkanes were the most abundant species (67.2 %). The heavy-molecular-weight PAHs (four- and five-ring) contributed 67.9 % of the total PAHs, and the middle-chain-length n-alkanes (C25–C34) were the most abundant (72.3 %) in n-alkanes. PAHs and n-alkanes were mainly distributed in the 0.56–1.00 µm fraction, while ∑ (hopanes + steranes) were associated with the 0.32–1.00 µm fraction, suggesting condensation of combustion products was their important origin. The ratio–ratio plots indicated that NPOCs in the local area were affected by photochemical degradation. To reduce the uncertainty caused by only particle NPOC data for source apportionment, the particle and predicted gaseous-phase NPOCs, incorporated with other PM2.5 compound were used as input data for the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Eight factors were extracted for both cases: secondary aerosol formation, vehicle exhaust, industrial emission, coal combustion, biomass burning, ship emission, and dust and light NPOCs. These findings highlight the emissions from different aerosol-associated NPOC origins, which caused different size-specific distributions, photodegradation and gas–particle partitioning, which further affect PM2.5 source apportionment. Considering these effects on organic tracers will help us accurately identify the potential sources of aerosols and then asses the contributions from each source.

Mercury (Hg) has a complex atmospheric transformation cycle and acts as a global pollutant. Size-specific particle bound mercury (PBM) was implemented in different functional (industrial, urban and suburban) areas in Shanghai, China. The total concentration of 13-staged PBM (rang of 0.01-18.0 μm) varied of 99.0-611 pg/m3, with an average value of 318 ± 144 pg/m3. The Gaoqiao petrochemical industry (GQPI) site showed the highest concentrations, whereas the suburban Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) displayed the lowest. The PBM in nucleation, accumulation and coarse modes were 7.63-96.7, 69.5-455, and 9.43-176 pg/m3, respectively, and the fractions of 0.56-1.00 and 0.32-0.56 μm were the two most abundant. Both OC and EC displayed unimodal distribution patterns (peak of 0.56-1.00 μm) at GQPI, while bimodal distributions were observed at urban and suburban sites. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the most common form of industrial and municipal wastewater control. To evaluate the performance of wastewater treatment and the potential risk of treated wastewater to aquatic life and human health, the influent and effluent concentrations of nine toxic metals were determined in 12 full-scale WWTPs in Shanghai, China. The performance was evaluated based on national standards for reclamation and aquatic criteria published by US EPA, and by comparison with other full-scale WWTPs in different countries. Potential sources of heavy metals were recognized using partial correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering, and principal component analysis (PCA). Results indicated significant treatment effect on As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn. The removal efficiencies ranged from 92% (Cr) to 16.7% (Hg). The results indicated potential acute and/or chronic effect of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn on aquatic life and potential harmful effect of As and Mn on human health for the consumption of water and/or organism. The results of partial correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering based on cosine distance, and PCA, which were consistent with each other, suggested common source of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb and common source of As, Hg, Mn, Ni, and Zn. Hierarchical clustering based on Jaccard similarity suggested common source of Cd, Hg, and Ni, which was statistically proved by Fisher's exact test.

Quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs) have attracted increasing attention due to their potential roles as the antibiotic alternatives. The combination of QSIs and antibiotics in clinical use and their subsequent release into the environment may result in joint effects on the ecology and environment, which has not received enough concerns yet. In this study, eight potential QSIs and three types of commonly used antibiotics, i.e., sulfonamides (SAs), β-lactams and tetracyclines (TCs), were investigated for their combined toxicity on Escherichia coli (E. coli). The QSAR models for the combined toxicity were constructed using the interaction energies between the chemicals and their target proteins as calculated by molecular docking. It was revealed that the SAs and QSIs presented either additive or antagonistic joint effects in the mixture toxicity test, while β-lactams and TCs showed only antagonistic effects with the QSIs. The analysis on the coefficients in the QSAR models suggested that the QSIs in the mixtures were more involved in the interaction with the proteins than the antibiotics. This study will help better understand the risks of joint exposure to the antibiotics and QSIs, and provide a new perspective for the study of the combined toxicity mechanism.

To investigate the multi-year atmospheric characteristic and population exposure level of black carbon (BC) in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China, about five years of ambient BC measurement was performed at Dianshan Lake (DSL) regional Supersite from February 2014 to February 2019. BC concentration at DSL was 1.39 ± 1.15 μg m−3, which was at low to medium level compared to other areas in the world, and annual BC level was decreased by an average of 45.4% from 2014 to 2018. The absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE) value was 1.30 ± 0.173, indicating the predominant contribution of liquid fuel sources such as traffic exhaust to BC. Meanwhile, AAE and BC values both showed the winter-high and summer-low temporal patterns, which highlighted the increasing contribution from solid fuels to BC in winter. Moreover, diurnal characteristics of BC, AAE, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide demonstrated the dominance of traffic sources for BC. The average estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of BC through inhalation for 17 population age subgroups were 0.0177–0.0811 μg kg−1 day−1, which the highest EDIs for male and female were both observed in infants (9 months ~

To better understand the characterization and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during non-haze and haze days, ambient VOCs were continuously measured by a vehicle-mounted online thermal desorption system coupled with a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD–GC/MS) system in Shanghai, China. The average concentrations of VOCs in haze episodes (193.2 μg m−3) were almost 50% higher than in non-haze periods (130.8 μg m−3). VOC concentrations exhibited a bi-modal pattern in the morning and evening rush hour periods on both non-haze and haze days. The ratios of toluene to benzene (T/B) and m,p-xylene to ethylbenzene (X/E) indicated that VOCs were aged air mass transported from nearby areas. The estimated SOA yields were 12.6 ± 5.3 and 16.7 ± 6.7 μg m−3 for non-haze and haze days, respectively, accounting for 9.6 and 8.7% of the corresponding PM2.5 concentrations, which were slightly underestimated. VOCs–sensitivity (VOCs–S) based on a PM2.5-dependent model was used to investigate the variation between VOCs and PM2.5 concentrations in the morning rush hour. It was found that VOCs were more sensitive to PM2.5 on clean days than during periods of heavy particulate pollution. Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are natural biotoxins produced by benthic dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus, which are bioaccumulated and biotransformed along food chains in coral ecosystems. They are neurotoxins that activate voltage-gated sodium channels and disrupt ion conductance in the excitable tissues. Pacific ciguatoxin-1 (P-CTX-1) is the most prevalent and potent CTX congener present in fishes from the Pacific Ocean. In this study, P-CTX-1 was administrated to larval marine medaka (2h post-hatch) via microinjection. Exposure to P-CTX-1 at sub-ppb levels led to adverse behavioural changes, altered physiological performances and reduced survivability of the larval marine medaka as early as 24h after exposure. P-CTX-1 decreased the rate of heartbeat and locomotion of the exposed larvae, probably owing to a series of physiological processes and morphological changes such as pericardial oedema, failure of swim bladder inflation and spinal curvature. The exposed larval marine medaka also demonstrated reduced, delayed and paralyzed responses to external stimulations. This may render them more susceptible to predation. P-CTX-1 could be effectively distributed from the yolk sac to all parts of the fish body, including head and trunk, 24h after exposure. Repeated low-dose P-CTX-1 exposure resulted in larval mortality comparable to that of a single high-dose exposure.

Microplastics have been an emerging threat to marine environments and marine life. Oysters as seafood are popular worldwide, yet also a high-risk group to accumulate pollutants due to their filter-feeding nature. In this study, edible oysters were collected from Yantai, a coastal city in China, to study the uptake, accumulation and translocation of microplastics in marine life, as well as their in vivo interactions with other persistent pollutants. Microplastics were found in all of the studied oyster tissue samples with an average concentration around 4.53 items/g wet weight (24.49 items/g dry weight). Microplastics were mainly translocated and distributed in the gills and mantle of the studied oysters in the form of fibers. The detected microplastics in the oysters were mostly cellophane and polyester as identified by the micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscope. Cellophane tends to accumulate in gills, mantle and muscle while polyester tends to accumulate in digestive glands of the studied oysters. Excessive concentrations of trace metals (30.484, 4.415, 0.395 and 181.044 μg/g dry weight of Cr, Cd, Pb and Cu, respectively) were detected in the studied oysters using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace metals of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were found to be adsorbed on the surface of microplastics isolated from the oysters. There was a correlation between the in vivo concentration of microplastics and the in vivo concentration of four trace metals: Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb, which suggests potential in vivo interactions between microplastics and trace metals. This study can help to understand the impacts of microplastics and their joint toxicity with other pollutants on marine life, especially on aquaculture seafood. This study will be an important reference for the assessment of health risks associated with consumption of edible coastal oysters in China.

The air traffic growth at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) has attracted much concern over the potential impacts on local air quality and human health; however, the emission contributions due to aircraft activities, impact on air quality and health effects remain unclear. In this study, the ground operational data derived from the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) dataset are newly utilized to obtain the PVG-specific emission parameters of 10 distinct aircraft-engine combinations during the taxi-in and taxi-out phases of the landing and take-off (LTO) cycle. The resulting emission parameters, together with PVG-specific operational conditions, are applied to quantify the annual emissions in 2017 for main engines and auxiliary power units (APUs) at PVG, emission variations caused by mixing layer height, sensitivity of black carbon (BC) emissions to the estimation method and sensitivity of PM2.5 emissions to the fuel sulfur content (FSC). The results show noticeable discrepancies between the corrected fuel flows and NOx emission indices (EIs) and those certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The annual emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), CO, NOx, NO, NO2, HONO, HNO3, NOy, SO2, SO42−, BC, organic carbon (OC) and PM2.5 with corrected emission parameters are 3.82 × 105 kg, 4.35 × 106 kg, 5.36 × 106 kg, 4.40 × 106 kg, 9.58 × 105 kg, 1.03 × 105 kg, 3.83 × 103 kg, 5.47 × 106 kg, 3.56 × 105 kg, 1.31 × 104 kg, 5.43 × 104 kg, 4.73 × 103 kg and 7.22 × 104 kg, respectively, while the application of the maximum height of the mixing layer contributes to emission increases as high as 16.9% (NOx). An alternative estimation of BC emissions leads to an increase of 50% compared with first-order approximation 3 (FOA3), while a reduction in PM2.5 emissions can be expected by minimizing the FSC.

BackgroundRice (Oryza sativaL.) yield is seriously influenced by panicle exsertion (PE) and the uppermost internode (UI) through panicle enclosure or energy transport during grain-filling stages. We evaluated the traits of PE and UI of 205 rice accessions in two independent environments and performed genome-wide association (GWAS) to explore the key genes controlling PE and UI, which could be used to improve panicle enclosure in rice breeding.ResultsIn this study, extensive genetic variation was found in both PE and UI among the 205 rice accessions, and 10.7% of accessions had panicle enclosure (PE/UI ≤ 0). Correlation analysis revealed that PE was significantly positively correlated with 1000-grain weight (1000-GW) but negatively correlated with heading date (HD), and UI was significantly positively correlated with HD but no significantly correlated with 1000-GW. A total of 22 and 24 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified for PE and UI using GWAS, respectively. Eight loci for PE and nine loci for UI were simultaneously detected both in 2015 and in 2016, seven loci had adjacent physical positions between PE and UI, and ten loci for PE and seven loci for UI were located in previously reported QTLs. Further, we identified theCYP734A4gene, encoding a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase, and theOsLIS-L1gene, encoding a lissencephaly type-1-like protein, as causal genes forqPE14andqUI14, and forqPE19, respectively. PE and UI were both significantly shorter in these two genes’ mutants than in WT. Allelic Hap.1/2/4 ofCYP734A4and Hap.1/2/4 ofOsLIS-L1increased PE, UI, PE/UI, and 1000-GW, but Hap.3 ofCYP734A4and Hap.3 ofOsLIS-L1reduced them. In addition, six candidate genes were also detected for four key novel loci,qPE16,qPE21,qUI1, andqUI18, that seemed to be related to PE and UI.ConclusionsOur results provide new information on the genetic architecture of PE and UI in rice, confirming that theCYP734A4andOsLIS-L1genes participate in PE and UI regulation, which could improve our understanding of the regulatory mechanism of PE and UI for rice breeding in the future.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of ozone and atmospheric particulates that have attracted extensive attention worldwide. Cooking emissions, the chemical characteristics of which vary dramatically due to different cooking styles, are a main source of ambient VOCs, especially in large cities. This research focused on the emission characteristics of VOCs from six types of restaurants in Shanghai: hot pot (HP), Sichuan cuisine (SC), Cantonese cuisine (CS), seafood (SF), Western fast food (WFF), and authentic Shanghai cuisine (ASC). It was found that HP, which discharged cooking fumes indoors, produced the highest mass concentration of VOCs (1900.2 ± 364.8 μg m-3), followed by SC (1403.7 ± 403.8 μg m-3), WFF (656.0 ± 156.9 μg m-3), SF (638.6 ± 145.1 μg m-3), CC (632.7 ± 127.7 μg m-3), and ASC (612.3 ± 51.3 μg m-3), the cooking fumes from which were collected by emission extraction stacks. Additionally, the VOC species from each cuisine were mainly low carbon substances. Alkanes were the major VOC pollutants from all six cuisines, accounting for 34.4-71.7%. The coefficient divergence values were 0.287-0.593, suggesting that there were differences between the cuisines in the present study. Ozone formation potential and secondary organic aerosol formation potential indicated that O-VOCs and aromatics were the largest contributors. Health risk assessment of VOCs via non-carcinogenic risk values (HQ) and carcinogenic risk values (RISK) indicated that frying, grilling, and stir-frying had relatively large impacts on human health. VOCs collected in emission extraction stacks were significantly higher risk compared with those in the indoor environment, but the RISK score of the HP restaurant was larger, second only to SC. The HQ and RISK values of 1,3-butadiene, acetaldehyde, and trichloroethylene in the HP restaurant all exceeded US EPA standards, indicating that long-term exposure in an HP restaurant would have a significant impact on human health and might carry a potential cancer risk.

Identifying the sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is key to air quality control and pollution prevention. Though receptor models have been widely used in source apportionment of VOCs, they are not applicable to identify the potential source of labile species. In this study, the potential source of methyl mercaptan (MeSH) near a large refining and petrochemical plant was identified using an indirect method. When wind directions were controlled, the study period was separated into two subperiods depending on the detection of MeSH. Relative contributions from potential sources were predicted by chemical mass balance model and positive matrix factorization model based on ambient concentrations of sulfur-free compounds. Both models predicted that petroleum refinery and petrochemical production were the dominant sources of VOCs in the study area. When MeSH was detected, the relative contribution from gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, or crude oil increased by 7.4 to 26.8% point, depending on wind direction and the predictive model used, suggesting a close relationship between MeSH and the emission from petroleum refinery. Consistent with the indirect source apportionment, among the coexisting VOCs, MeSH was most highly correlated or associated with ethane, propane, isobutane, cis-2-pentente, and isoprene, which are major components of the products or by-products of petrochemical refining processes.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that play essential roles in plant growth and development. We previously cloned qGL3, a major quantitative trait locus regulating grain length in rice (Oryza sativa). The O. sativa japonica var N411 has extra-large grains compared with the O. sativa indica var 9311, and the recessive qgl3 allele from N411 contributes positively to grain length. qGL3 encodes a putative protein phosphatase with Kelch-like repeat domains, an ortholog of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) brassinosteroid-insensitive1 SUPPRESSOR1 (BSU1). BSU1 positively regulates BR signaling, while overexpression of qGL3 induced BR loss-of-function phenotypes. Both qGL3(N411) and qGL3(9311) physically interact with the rice glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3)/SHAGGY-like kinase 3 (OsGSK3), an ortholog of Arabidopsis BR INSENSITIVE2 (BIN2). qGL3(9311) dephosphorylates OsGSK3, but qGL3(N411) lacks this activity. Knocking out OsGSK3 enhances BR signaling and induces nuclear localization of O. sativa BRASSINAZOLE RESISTANT1 (OsBZR1). Unlike the dephosphorylation of BIN2 (which leads to protein degradation) in Arabidopsis, qGL3 dephosphorylates and stabilizes OsGSK3 in rice. These results demonstrate that qGL3 suppresses BR signaling by regulating the phosphorylation and stability of OsGSK3, which modulates OsBZR1 phosphorylation and subcellular distribution. Our study clarifies the role of qGL3 in the regulation of grain length and provides insight into BR signaling, including the differences between rice and Arabidopsis.

With the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions and consequent improvement in air quality due to the nationwide lockdown, ozone (O3) pollution was generally amplified in China. However, the O3 levels throughout the Guangxi region of South China showed a clear downward trend during the lockdown. To better understand this unusual phenomenon, we investigated the characteristics of conventional pollutants, the influence of meteorological and anthropogenic factors quantified by a multiple linear regression (MLR) model, and the impact of local sources and long-range transport based on a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) and the HYSPLIT model. Results show that in Guangxi, the conventional pollutants generally declined during the COVID-19 lockdown period (January 24 to February 9, 2020) compared with their concentrations during 2016–2019, while O3 gradually increased during the resumption (10 February to April 2020) and full operation periods (May and June 2020). Focusing on Beihai, a typical Guangxi region city, the correlations between the daily O3 concentrations and six meteorological parameters (wind speed, visibility, temperature, humidity, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure) and their corresponding regression coefficients indicate that meteorological conditions were generally conducive to O3 pollution mitigation during the lockdown. A 7.84 μg/m3 drop in O3 concentration was driven by meteorology, with other decreases (4.11 μg/m3) explained by reduced anthropogenic emissions of O3 precursors. Taken together, the lower NO2/SO2 ratios (1.25–2.33) and consistencies between real-time monitored primary emissions and ambient concentrations suggest that, with the closure of small-scale industries, residual industrial emissions have become dominant contributors to local primary pollutants. Backward trajectory cluster analyses show that the slump of O3 concentrations in Southern Guangxi could be partly attributed to clean air mass transfer (24–58%) from the South China Sea. To evaluate the green photocatalytic disinfection for practical applications, disinfection of different types of real sewage using magnetic photocatalyst RGO/Fe,N-TiO2/Fe3O4@SiO2 (RGOFeNTFS) under simulated solar light was investigated: low-salinity sewage after tertiary treatment, low-salinity sewage after secondary biological treatment, high-salinity sewage after secondary biological treatment, and high-salinity sewage after chemically enhanced primary treatment. The classification of the sewage as high and low-salinity is based on the regions of sewage source that use seawater and freshwater for toilet flushing, respectively. It shows potential of solar-light-driven photocatalytic disinfection in low-salinity sewage: around 20 min (for sewage after tertiary treatment) and 45 min (for sewage after secondary treatment) of photocatalytic disinfection are required for sewage to meet the discharge standard, and no bacterial regrowth is observed in the treated sewage after 48 h. However, due to the poorer water quality, the high-salinity sewage requires a relatively long reaction time (more than 240 min) to meet the discharge standard, showing minimal practical significance. Further, the complex characteristics of real sewage, such as organic matter, suspended matter, multivalent-ions, pH and DO level significantly influence photocatalytic disinfection, and should be carefully reviewed in evaluating the photocatalytic disinfection of sewage. Besides, RGOFeNTFS shows a good reusability over three cycles for photocatalytic disinfection of low-salinity sewage samples. Microplastic contamination poses a great threat to the health of aquatic species, which may affect their reproduction and result in ecological consequences. There is a need to further elucidate the potential impact microplastics can impose on aquatic species. In this study, the effects of exposure to polystyrene microplastics on reproductive organs, and the underlying response mechanisms, were investigated using zebrafish Danio rerio. After 21 days of continuous waterborne exposure, no significant difference was observed at the lower concentration of 10 μg/L. At concentrations above 100 μg/L, significantly enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was found in both male and female liver and gonads. At the concentration of 1000 μg/L, significantly increased apoptosis levels were observed in male testes, triggering increased expression of p53-mediated apoptotic pathways; histological alteration in the form of a significant decrease in testis basement membrane thickness was also observed. This study demonstrated that exposure to microplastics can induce molecular responses and histological alterations in fish gonads, implying potential adverse impact on fish reproductive organs. This work provided new insights on the reproductive damage microplastics can cause in fish and have implications in fields of freshwater ecology and environmental toxicology.

To investigate composition characteristics and assess occupational health risks and odor pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial activities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China, one-year field measurements of VOCs were conducted simultaneously at an iron and steel industrial park (ISP), one chemical industrial park (CMP) and one petrochemical industrial park (PCP) from September, 2018 to August, 2019. The concentrations of VOCs were 80.2 ± 67.9 ppbv, 28.1 ± 27.2 ppbv and 144 ± 378 ppbv for ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics, alkanes and alkenes were the major components of VOCs at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Moreover, the toluene to benzene ratios were 0.330 ± 0.302, 4.31 ± 6.48 and 1.84 ± 3.34, which generally showed the characteristics of combustion source for ISP, industrial activities for CMP and petrochemical industry for PCP, respectively. The hazard index values were 0.752 ± 0.438, 0.108 ± 0.248 and 0.090 ± 0.260 at ISP, CMP and PCP, which were generally lower than threshold limit value, suggesting a low noncarcinogenic risk for workers. Meanwhile, the 95th percentile LCR values of VOCs were 8.76 × 10−5, 1.15 × 10−5 and 1.00 × 10−5 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively, which were also under acceptable risk level, indicating a low carcinogenic risk. Benzene and 1,3-butadiene were main harmful substances for both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of VOCs. The odor levels of VOCs were 2.12 ± 4.21, 12.5 ± 28.7 and 1.01 ± 7.84 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics for ISP and sulfide compounds for CMP and PCP were primary pollutants for odor pollution. This work could improve the understanding of risk levels and odor characteristics of VOCs and benefit policy development on alleviating odor complaints and health risks for workers in YRD region, China.

Waterborne exposure to highly persistent microplastic pollutants is a major concern for aquatic species worldwide. There are still gaps in knowledge on microplastics’ potential transgenerational effects on offspring generation. Using zebrafish, this study investigated the survival and early development of offspring through a 21-day continuous parental treatment with polystyrene microplastics. The results showed that continuous waterborne exposure to high concentrations (>100 μg/L) of polystyrene microplastics (1 μm) for 21 days resulted in notable microplastic accumulation in adult fish intestines. Exposure at microplastic concentrations greater than 100 μg/L also induced significant changes in steroidogenic mRNA expression in zebrafish gonads. However, no significant changes in the cumulative number of eggs spawned and fertilization rate were observed at any parental exposure concentrations when compared to the control. Early development of derived offspring, in terms of hatching rate, body length, malformation rate and mortality rate, did not significantly differ from that of the control. This study showed that transgenerational effects of parental exposure to polystyrene microplastics in zebrafish might be negligible or recoverable. This study provided new results and insights on the transgenerational effects of microplastics on a freshwater fish species and can help to understand impacts of microplastics on freshwater ecosystems.

In China, the corresponding control directives for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been based on primary emissions, rarely considering reactive speciation. To seek more effective VOCs control strategies, we investigated 107 VOC species in a typical coastal city (Beihai) of South China, from August to November 2018. Meanwhile, a high-resolution anthropogenic VOCs monthly emission inventory (EI) was established for 2018. For source apportionments (SAs) reliability, comparisons of source structures derived from positive matrix factorization (PMF) and EI were made mainly in terms of reaction losses, uncertainties and specific ratios. Finally, for the source–end control, a comprehensive reactivity control index (RCI) was established by combing SAs with reactive speciation profiles. Ambient measurements showed that the average concentration of VOCs was 26.38 ppbv, dominated by alkanes (36.7%) and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) (29.4%). VOC reactivity was estimated using ozone formation potential (52.35 ppbv) and propylene-equivalent concentration (4.22 ppbv). EI results displayed that the entire VOC, OFP, and propylene-equivalent emissions were 40.98 Gg, 67.98 Gg, and 105.93 Gg, respectively. Comparisons of source structures indicated that VOC SAs agreed within ±100% between two perspectives. Both PMF and EI results showed that petrochemical industry (24.0% and 33.0%), food processing and associated combustion (19.1% and 29.2%) were the significant contributors of anthropogenic VOCs, followed by other industrial processes (22.2% and 13.3%), transportation (18.9% and 12.0%), and solvent utilization (9.1% and10.5%). Aimed at VOCs abatement according to RCI: for terminal control, fifteen ambient highly reactive species (predominantly alkenes and alkanes) were targeted; for source control, the predominant anthropogenic sources (food industry, solvent usage, petrochemical industry and transportation) and their emitted highly reactive species were determined. Environmental pollution caused by pharmaceuticals has been recognized as a major threat to the aquatic ecosystems. Carbamazepine, as the widely prescribed antiepileptic drug, has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment and has created concerns about its potential impacts in the aquatic organisms. The effects of carbamazepine on zebrafish embryos were studied by examining their phenotype, behavior and molecular responses. The results showed that carbamazepine disturbed the normal growth and development of exposed zebrafish embryos and larvae. Upon exposure to carbamazepine at 1 μg/L, the hatching rate, body length, swim bladder appearance and yolk sac absorption rate were significantly increased. Embryos in treatment groups were more sensitive to touch and light stimulation. At molecular level, exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration (1 μg/L) of carbamazepine disturbed the expression pattern of neural-related genes of zebrafish embryos and larvae. This study suggests that the exposure of fish embryo to antiepileptic drugs, at environmentally relevant concentrations, affects their early development and impairs their behavior. Such impacts may have future repercussions by affecting fish population structure.

When silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used commercially at a large scale, they infiltrate the environment at a rapid pace. However, the impact of large quantities of AgNPs on aquatic ecosystems is still largely unknown. In aquatic ecosystems, the phytoplanktons have a vital ecological function and, therefore, the potential impact of AgNPs on the microalgae community has elicited substantial concern. Therefore, in this study, the impacts of AgNPs on a marine diatom, the Skeletonema costatum, are investigated, with a focus on their photosynthesis and associated mechanisms. Exposure to AgNPs at a concentration of 0.5 mg l(-1) significantly induces excess intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS, 122%) and reduces 28% of their cell viability. More importantly, exposure to AgNPs reduces the algal chlorophyll-a content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted, which revealed that AgNPs obstruct the light absorption of algae because they adhere to their surface. Atmospheric particulate mercury (PHg) is recognized as a global pollutant that requires regulation because of its significant impacts on both human health and wildlife. The haze episodes that occur frequently in China could influence the transport and fate of PHg. To examine the characteristics of PHg during haze and non-haze days, size-fractioned particles were collected using thirteen-stage Nano-MOUDI samplers (10 nm–18 μm) during a severe haze episode (from December 2013 to January 2014) in Shanghai. The PHg concentration on haze days (4.11 ± 0.53 ng m−3) was three times higher than on non-haze days (1.34 ± 0.15 ng m−3). The ratio of the PHg concentration to total gaseous mercury (TGM) ranged from 0.42 during haze days to 0.21 during non-haze days, which was possibly due to the elevated concentration of particles for gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) adsorption, elevated sulfate and nitrate contributing to GEM oxidation, and the catalytic effect of elevated water-soluble inorganic metal ions. PHg/PM10 during haze days (0.019 ± 0.004 ng/μg) was lower than during non-haze days (0.024 ± 0.002 ng/μg), and PHg/PM10 was significantly reduced with an increasing concentration of PM10, which implied a relatively lower growth velocity of mercury than other compositions on particles during haze days, especially in the diameter range of 0.018–0.032 μm. During haze days, each size-fractioned PHg concentration was higher than the corresponding fraction on non-haze days, and the dominant particle size was in the accumulation mode, with constant accumulation to a particle size of 0.56–1.0 μm. The mass size distribution of PHg was bimodal with peaks at 0.32–0.56 μm and 3.1–6.2 μm on non-haze days, and 0.56–1.0 μm and 3.1–6.2 μm on haze days. There was a clear trend that the dominant size for PHg in the fine modes shifted from 0.32–0.56 μm during non-haze days to 0.56–1.0 μm on haze days, which revealed the higher growth velocity of PHg on haze days due to the condensation and accumulation of Hg in particles. Traffic emissions and coal combustion may contribute to the high concentrations of Hg, because PHg of every size was found to correlate positively with SO2, NO2, and CO. A correlation was found between every mode of PHg and relative humidity, which affected the gas-particle partitioning of semi-volatile organic compounds, resulting in effective partitioning into aerosols. The strong correlations between Hg and water-soluble ions implied the oxidation of elemental Hg was the main gas-to-particle chemical transformation process.

Concentrations of fine particulate mercury (PHg), particulate matter ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), and particulate matter ≤10 μm (PM 10 ) were monitored for the whole year of 2013 in Shanghai, China. The average concentrations of PHg were 1270 ± 716 pg/m 3 and 341 ± 187 pg/m 3 during haze and non-haze days respectively. The average PHg concentration throughout the whole year 2013 was 642 ± 616 pg/m 3 . It was observed that PHg concentrations on haze days were 3 times higher than on non-haze days. The concentration of PHg on non-haze days in 2013 varied from 0.25 to 0.48 ng/m 3 . The mean monthly PHg concentration was highest in December (1.92 ng/m 3 ), while the minimum mean concentration was observed in February and August (0.80 ng/m 3 ), and there was a clear seasonal variation: winter (1.67 ng/m 3 ), autumn (1.08 ng/m 3 ), spring (1.02 ng/m 3 ), and summer (1.00 ng/m 3 ) during haze days. The correlation between PHg and PM 2.5 was strong (r = 0.96 on haze days; r = 0.90 on non-haze days), while the correlation between PHg and PM 10 was weaker (r = 0.85 on haze days; r = 0.57 on non-haze days). The PHg concentration on haze days was always higher than on non-haze days, indicating that haze conditions were accelerating the formation of PHg. The result also indicated that PHg was inclined to combine with fine particles. The existence of strong correlations between the concentrations of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and PHg indicated the commonality of the contributing sources, such as traffic, industrial emissions, and the combustion of coal.

Desiccation tolerance is an important characteristic of rice seed quality during seed drying. In this study, two varieties of Oryza sativa L. subsp. japonica (Jiucaiqing and Wuyunjing 7) were used to investigate the dynamic changes in rice seeds that are associated with desiccation tolerance (germination traits produced by dried seeds), grain mass (GW), moisture content (MC), and electrical conductivity (EC) during seed development (18 to 42 days after heading (DAH)). Changes in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in fresh, dry, and imbibed states, and antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD); catalase (CAT); and glutathione reductase (GR)) in fresh and imbibed seeds were also evaluated during seed development. The results showed that seeds started to acquire desiccation tolerance at 26 DAH and reached the highest levels at 38 DAH. The increase in GW and decline in MC coincided with the acquisition of desiccation tolerance. MDA and H2O2 levels, and SOD, CAT, and GR activities in fresh and imbibed seeds rapidly decreased during the early developmental stages (18–30 DAH), and then their levels gradually stabilized (30–42 DAH). Regression analyses indicated that H2O2 levels in fresh seeds was negatively correlated with seed germination, whereas SOD activity in imbibed seeds was positively correlated with seed germination. H2O2 and SOD are, therefore, good parameters for assessing desiccation tolerance during rice seed development.

At the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus, designated as SARS-CoV-2, emerged in Wuhan, China and was identified as the causal pathogen of COVID-19. The epidemic scale of COVID-19 has increased dramatically, with confirmed cases increasing across China and globally. Understanding the potential affecting factors involved in COVID-19 transmission will be of great significance in containing the spread of the epidemic. Environmental and meteorological factors might impact the occurrence of COVID-19, as these have been linked to various diseases, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), whose causative pathogens belong to the same virus family as SARS-CoV-2. We collected daily data of COVID-19 confirmed cases, air quality and meteorological variables of 33 locations in China for the outbreak period of 29 January 2020 to 15 February 2020. The association between air quality index (AQI) and confirmed cases was estimated through a Poisson regression model, and the effects of temperature and humidity on the AQI-confirmed cases association were analyzed. The results show that the effect of AQI on confirmed cases associated with an increase in each unit of AQI was statistically significant in several cities. The lag effect of AQI on the confirmed cases was statistically significant on lag day 1 (relative risk (RR) = 1.0009, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0004, 1.0013), day 2 (RR = 1.0007, 95% CI: 1.0003, 1.0012) and day 3 (RR = 1.0008, 95% CI: 1.0003, 1.0012). Ciguatoxins are natural compounds produced by benthic dinoflagellates Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa spp., which cause fish intoxication by ciguatera fish poisoning. This study aimed to assess the dietary exposure effects of ciguatoxin P-CTX-1 on the reproductive performance in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma). Fish which ingested >1.16 pg·day−1 for 21 days exhibited abnormal behaviors including diarrhea, abnormal swimming, loss of appetite and decreased egg production. After 7-day exposure to P-CTX-1 at a dose of 1.93 pg·day−1, significant gender-specific differences in reproductive performance and decreased hatching rate of the offspring were observed. Chemical analysis of P-CTX-1 showed that the P-CTX-1 accumulation rates were 24.1 ± 1.4% in female fish and 9.9 ± 0.4% in male fish, and 0.05 pg·egg−1 was detected. The results illustrate that dietary exposure to P-CTX-1 affected the reproductive performance and survival of offspring, and caused bioaccumulation and maternal transfer of P-CTX-1 in marine medaka.

A two-year gaseous elementary mercury (GEM) measurement was implemented at an iron–steel plant in Yangtze River Delta, China, which provided an excellent opportunity to investigate their dynamic cycling. The hourly GEM concentrations ranged between 0.78 and 113.8 ng m−3, with a mean value of 3.83 ± 2.53 ng m−3. Temporally, seasonal GEM contents decreased as winter ≈ spring > summer > autumn, while diurnal cycling was observed with a steady decrease at 14:00–17:00. GEM variations were found to be related to source emissions, meteorology and regional transportation. Three major oxidants (O3, Br and OH radicals) were used to evaluate GEM oxidation in the daytime, and the estimated GEM depletion rate was 70.8 ± 52.5 molecule cm−3 s−1 (0.09 ± 0.06 ng m−3 h−1). The GEM oxidized by Br radicals accounted for 83.4% of the total GEM oxidation rate, followed by O3 (13.8%). The estimated atmospheric lifetime of GEM was 22.9 to 345.2 days, which implies a major contribution of Br radicals to the GEM sink. These findings highlight the ability of iron–steel industry emissions and in–situ oxidation to affect daily local GEM cycling significantly.

As one of the highest energy consuming and polluting industries, the power generation industry is an important source of particulate matter emissions. Recently, implementation of ultra-low emission technology has changed the emission characteristic of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In this study, PM2.5 emitted from four typical power plants in China was sampled using a dilution channel sampling system, and analyzed for elements, water-soluble ions and carbonaceous fractions. The results showed that PM2.5 concentrations emitted from the four power plants were 0.78 ± 0.16, 0.63 ± 0.09, 0.29 ± 0.07 and 0.28 ± 0.01 mg m−3, respectively. Emission factors were 0.004–0.005 g/kg coal, nearly 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than those reported in previous studies. The highest proportions of PM2.5 consisted of organic carbon (OC), SO42−, elemental carbon (EC), NH4+, Al and Cl−. Coefficients of divergence (CDs) were in the ranges 0.22–0.41 (for an individual plant), 0.43–0.69 (among different plants), and 0.60–0.99 (in previous studies). The results indicated that the source profiles of each tested power plant were relatively similar, but differed from those in previous studies. Enrichment factors showed elevated Se and Hg, in accordance with the source markers Se and As. Comparing source profiles with previous studies, the proportion of OC, EC and NH4+ were higher, while the proportion of Al in PM2.5 were relatively lower. The OC/EC ratio became concentrated at ∼5. Results from this study can be used for source apportionment and emission inventory calculations after implementation of ultra-low emission technologies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the combination of fatty acid profile and fatty acid δ13C fingerprinting to identify the origins of scallops. Fatty acid contents, as well as fatty acid δ13C values of 300 samples of three scallop species (Patinopecten yessoensis, Chlamys farreri, and Argopecten irradians) from seven sites in China were determined. Principal component analysis was performed on datasets to evaluate their performance of classification. Moreover, 75 samples were tested by discrimination analysis to estimate the accuracy of origin prediction. The results show that the accuracy rate of fatty acid profile and fatty acid δ13C fingerprinting for origin prediction was 92% and 85.3%, respectively. The combination of these two methods improved the identification, with an accuracy rate of 100.0%. These results indicate that the combination of fatty acid profile and fatty acid δ13C fingerprinting can be a precise and promising tool for origin traceability of scallops.
