To use effectively the shell in high-performance applications, analyzing the effect of hygrothermal effects on a piezoelectric delamination event is necessary. A laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shell with delamination is first established under hygrothermal effects, followed by an internal force analysis and an energy analysis of the shell. Then, a parametric vibration equation of the Mathieu for the shell is obtained by using the energy variation of the Rayleigh-Ritz method; later on, the harmonic balance method is employed to solve this equation. Finally, the effects of delamination parameters, geometric parameters, hygrothermal effects, and piezoelectric materials on the shell under uniformly distributed axial load are discussed.

A Y-shaped bifurcated beam that is comprised of one tapered part and two uniform parts is investigated in this article. The wave propagation method and Timoshenko beam theory are utilized to investigate the characteristics of energy transfer of flexural vibration. Transmission and reflection matrices at Y-shaped bifurcated interface with variable propagation directions of flexural incident wave are derived; the proportions of transmitted and reflected power caused by flexural wave in semi-infinite beam are obtained. The results show that both bifurcation position and angles between three sub-beams at Y-shaped bifurcated interface influence proportions of transmitted and reflected power. In order to investigate the power transfer coefficient of forced vibration in a finite Y-shaped bifurcated beam, the propagation relations of wave vectors in the coupled beam imposed lumped mass are deduced. Moreover, the analytical solution of power transfer coefficient is obtained. Numerical results indicate that increase of local mass can reduce power transfer coefficient at specific range of frequency domain in Y-shaped bifurcated beam. The investigation proposes the characteristics of energy transfer affected by bifurcation position, angles between sub-beams, variation coefficient of tapered beam and lumped mass, which is useful to optimal vibration control of flexural forced vibration in Y-shaped bifurcated beam.

In this paper, composites with multi-directional ellipsoidal fillers of arbitrary aspect ratio, and an interphase layer surrounding the filler, accommodating smoothly the differences in the filler and the matrix's properties, is taken into account. Each constituent of the fiber reinforced composite (FRC) is regarded to be isotropic and linear elastic, and the property of interphase is assumed to be of power-law variation across the thickness. Based on linear hygro-thermo-elastic theory and Elshelby's theory, a novel prediction scheme for effective stiffness, coefficient of thermal expansions (CTEs) and coefficient of moisture expansions (CMEs) of FRCs with functionally graded interphase (FGI) is proposed, in which the Mori-Tanaka method and piecewise method are used and novel analytical expressions for hygro-thermo-elastic of unidirectional FRCs are obtained, respectively; afterwards, a two-step homogenization technique is performed for the filler's distribution consideration. Numerical examples and analyses indicate that the effect of the thickness and mechanical properties of FGI on the overall properties of the FRC is substantial, especially for nano-filler reinforced composites; additionally, the filler content, the aspect ratio and orientation of inclusions have considerable influences on the overall properties of the hygro-thermo-elastic of FRCs.

This study used excess sludge from a sewage treatment plant as raw material to extract humic acid (HA) and explore the ability of HA to adsorb Pb2+ from a solution. The effects of the adsorbent amount, solution pH, and co-existing cations on the adsorption process were investigated. The study showed that the humic acid derived from sludge (S-HA) surface had a loose, clustered texture. The S-HA surface contained many oxygen-containing functional groups, such as carboxyl groups, alcohol hydroxyl groups, and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The presence of co-existing cations, such as Na+, NH4+ and Ca2+, in the solution was not conducive to the adsorption of Pb2+ by S-HA. As the solution pH increased, the adsorption of Pb2+ by S-HA gradually increased. The process by which S-HA adsorbed Pb2+ conformed to a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Additionally, the overall adsorption rate was controlled by liquid membrane diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model, and the S-HA had a maximum adsorption capacity of 27.59 mg/g at 25 °C. The adsorption dynamics and thermodynamics results showed that the adsorption of Pb2+ by S-HA occurred via both physical adsorption and chemical adsorption processes.

We study light variability of gravitationally magnified high-redshift star clusters induced by a foreground population of microlenses. This arises as the incoherent superposition of light variations from a large number of source stars traversing the random magnification pattern on the source plane. The light curve resembles a scale-invariant, Gaussian process on timescales of years to decades, while exhibits rapid and frequent micro-caustic crossing flares of larger amplitudes on timescales of days to months. For a concrete example, we study a young Lyman-continuum-leaking star cluster recently discovered in the lensed Sunburst Arc at $z=2.37$. We show that one magnified image happens to be intervened by a faint foreground galaxy, and hence should exhibit a variable flux at the $1$--$2\%$ level, which is measurable in space with $\sim 1$--$3\,$ks exposures on the Hubble Space Telescope and more easily with the James Webb Space Telescope, or from the ground using a $\sim$4-meter telescope without adaptive optics. Detailed measurement of this variability will enable us to determine the absolute macro magnification and hence the intrinsic mass and length scales of the star cluster, test synthetic models of stellar population, and probe multiplicity of massive stars. We furthermore suggest that monitoring the other lensed images of the star cluster, which are free from significant intervention by foreground stellar microlenses, will allow us to probe planetary to stellar mass compact objects constituting as little as just a few percent of the dark matter. Given the typical surface density of intracluster stars, we expect this phenomenon to be relevant for many other gravitationally magnified star clusters at Cosmic Noon behind galaxy cluster lenses., Comment: 16 pages including references, 8 figures, and 1 table. A pioneering boat-based survey was conducted in 2019, to gather baseline information regarding the presence, composition, relative abundance, and spatial distribution of deep-diving and off-shore cetaceans in the northern South China Sea (SCS). A total of 27 sightings comprising at least 8 cetacean species were recorded during the 13-day survey, including 5 deep-diving species (i.e. Risso's dolphin [Grampus griseus], short-finned pilot whale [Globicephala macrorhynchus], sperm whale [Physeter macrocephalus], Cuvier's beaked whale [Ziphius cavirostris], and an unidentified beaked whale [either the ginkgo-toothed beaked whale, Mesoplodon ginkgodens, or Deraniyagala's beaked whale, Mesoplodon hotaula]), as well as 3 off-shore dolphins (i.e. pantropical spotted dolphin [Stenella attenuate], striped dolphin [Stenella coeruleoalba], and Fraser's dolphin [Lagenodelphis hosei]). With the exception of pantropical spotted dolphins, all other species were sighted and recorded at sea in the northern SCS for the first time. The pantropical spotted dolphin was the most frequently sighted species, comprising 30% of the total sightings. Deep-diving cetaceans were mainly sighted in the northern Xisha Archipelago, whereas off-shore dolphins were distributed across the survey area. The pantropical spotted dolphin was observed in aggregations of more than 100 individuals and nearly all encountered species included calves; these findings suggested that the survey area functions as an important feeding and calving ground for various cetacean species. This pioneering survey provides fundamental information regarding cetacean fauna in the northern SCS and highlights the need to strengthen research and conservation efforts concerning these species.

CpG methylation of DNA is common in mammalian cells. In sperm, the DNA has the highest level of CpG methylation and is condensed into toroidal structures. How CpG methylation affects DNA structures and interactions is important to understand its biological roles but is largely unknown. Using an RNA-DNA-RNA structure, we observed the equilibrium hopping dynamics between the condensed and extended states of DNA in the presence of polyamines or polylysine peptide as a reduced model of histone tails. Combing with the measured DNA elasticities, we report that CpG methylation of each cytosine nucleotide substantially increases DNA-DNA attraction by up to 0.2 kBT. For the DNA with 57% GC content, the relative increase caused by CpG methylation is up to 32% for the spermine-induced DNA-DNA attraction and up to 9% for the polylysine-induced DNA-DNA attraction. These findings help us to evaluate the energetic contributions of CpG methylation in sperm development and chromatin regulation.

Feature extraction leads to the loss of statistical information of raw data and ignores the sampling uncertainty and the fluctuations in the signal over time in mechanical fault diagnosis. In this paper, novel modeling methods for mechanical signals based on probability box theory were proposed to solve the above problem. First, the type of random distribution of the bearing signals were analyzed. Then, a Dempster-Shafer structure was obtained to establish a probability box model. To address the identification difficulty of the type of random distribution for the bearing signals, a second probability box model was established based on a vector consisting of features from the bearing signals. If the data are not found to follow a random distribution, a third modeling method based on the definition of probability boxes was proposed. The effectiveness and applicability of the three proposed models were compared with experimental data from rolling element bearings. The combination of probability box theory and mechanical fault diagnosis theory can open up a new research direction for mechanical fault diagnosis.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is one of the important causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. PPARα is highly expressed in the liver and plays a critical role in hepatic lipid metabolism. Our analysis of the gene expression profiles in the liver of humanized mice treated with a PPARα agonist and NASH patients suggested that PPARα might be a potential target for NASH therapy. This promoted us to find novel PPARα agonists. The results of virtual screening and biological evaluation identified compound A-4 as a selective PPARα agonist. It significantly regulated the target genes of PPARα involved in fatty acid metabolism and inflammation, exhibiting cellular anti-inflammatory activity. The key residues involved in the binding between PPARα ligand-binding domain (LBD) and compound A-4 were revealed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and further experimentally validated by the mutation study. Together, compound A-4 was well characterized as a novel lead compound for developing potent and selective PPARα agonists.

Equilibrium knots are common in biological polymers—their prevalence, size distribution, structure, and dynamics have been extensively studied, with implications to fundamental biological processes and DNA sequencing technologies. Nanopore microscopy is a high-throughput single-molecule technique capable of detecting the shape of biopolymers, including DNA knots. Here we demonstrate nanopore sensors that map the equilibrium structure of DNA knots, without spurious knot tightening and sliding. We show the occurrence of both tight and loose knots, reconciling previous contradictory results from different experimental techniques. We evidence the occurrence of two quantitatively different modes of knot translocation through the nanopores, involving very different tension forces. With large statistics, we explore the complex knots and, for the first time, reveal the existence of rare composite knots. We use parametrized complexity, in concert with simulations, to test the theoretical assumptions of the models, further asserting the relevance of nanopores in future investigation of knots., Nanopore microscopy is capable of detecting knots in DNA polymers, a common structural feature. Here the authors show nanopore sensors can map the equilibrium structure of these knots between tight and loose states.

Searches for gravitational waves crucially depend on exact signal processing of noisy strain data from gravitational wave detectors, which are known to exhibit significant nonstationary and non-Gaussian behavior. In this paper, we study two distinct effects in the LIGO/Virgo data that reduce the sensitivity of searches: first, variations in the noise power spectral density (PSD) on timescales of more than a few seconds; and second, loud and abrupt transient ``glitches'' of terrestrial or instrumental origin. We derive a simple procedure to correct, at first order, the effect of the variation in the PSD on the search background. Given the knowledge of the existence of localized glitches, in particular segments of data, we also develop a method to insulate statistical inference from these glitches, so as to cleanly excise them without affecting the search background in neighboring seconds. We show the importance of applying these methods on the publicly available LIGO data and estimate an increase in the detection volume of at least 15% from the PSD-drift correction alone, due to the improved background distribution.

Satellite-tagging is increasingly becoming a powerful biotelemetry approach to obtain remote measurement through tracking free-living cetaceans, which can fill knowledge gaps on cetaceans and facilitate conservation management. Here, we made a first biologging attempt on baleen whales in Chinese waters. An adult Bryde’s whale in the Beibu Gulf was tagged to investigate potential occurrence areas and migration routes of this poorly studied species. The whale was satellite-tracked for ~6 days with 71 filtered Argos satellite locations, resulting in a linear movement distance of 464 km. At each satellite-tracking location, the water depth was measured as 42.1 ± 24.8 m on average. During the satellite-tracking period, the whale’s moving speed was estimated at 5.33 ± 4.01 km/h. These findings expanded the known distribution areas of Bryde’s whales in the Beibu Gulf and provided an important scientific basis for the regional protection of this species. We suggest that fine-scale movements, habitat use, and migratory behavior of Bryde’s whales in the Beibu Gulf need more biotelemetry research, using long-term satellite-tracking tags and involving enough individuals. Furthermore, the genetic relationship and possible connectivity of Bryde’s whales in the Beibu Gulf and adjacent waters should be examined.

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are critical for providing good user experience of cloud services. CDN providers typically collect various multivariate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) time series to monitor and diagnose system performance. State-of-the-art anomaly detection methods mostly use deep learning to extract the normal patterns of data, due to its superior performance. However, KPI data usually exhibit non-additive Gaussian noise, which makes it difficult for deep learning models to learn the normal patterns, resulting in degraded performance in anomaly detection. In this paper, we propose a robust and noise-resilient anomaly detection mechanism using multivariate KPIs. Our key insight is that different KPIs are constrained by certain time-invariant characteristics of the underlying system, and that explicitly modelling such invariance may help resist noise in the data. We thus propose a novel anomaly detection method called SDFVAE, short for Static and Dynamic Factorized VAE, that learns the representations of KPIs by explicitly factorizing the latent variables into dynamic and static parts. Extensive experiments using real-world data show that SDFVAE achieves a F1-score ranging from 0.92 to 0.99 on both regular and noisy dataset, outperforming state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

Phenology is an important indicator of global climate change. Revealing the spatiotemporal characteristics of crop phenology is vital for ameliorating the adverse effects of climate change and guiding regional agricultural production. This study evaluated the spatiotemporal variability of soybean’s phenological stages and key growth periods, and assessed their sensitivity to key climatic factors, utilizing a long-term dataset (1992–2018) of soybean phenology and associated meteorological data collected at 51 stations across China. The results showed that (1) during the soybean growing seasons from 1992 to 2018, the average temperature (0.34 ± 0.09 ℃ decade−1) and cumulative precipitation (6.66 ± 0.93 mm decade−1) increased, but cumulative sunshine hours (− 33.98 ± 1.05 h decade−1) decreased. (2) On a national scale, dates of sowing, emergence, trifoliate, anthesis, and podding of soybean were delayed, while the maturity date showed an advancing trend. The vegetative growth period (− 0.52 ± 0.24 days decade−1) and whole growth period (− 1.32 ± 0.30 days decade−1) of soybean were shortened, but the reproductive growth period (0.05 ± 0.26 days decade−1) was slightly extended. Trends in soybean phenological stages and key growth periods diverged in regions. Soybean phenological stages were delayed in Huang-Huai-Hai soybean zone, whereas advanced in southern soybean zone. Moreover, the key growth periods were greatly shortened in northern soybean zone. (3) In general, the sensitivity of soybean key growth periods to temperature was negative, whereas those to precipitation and sunshine hours differed among regions. In particular, most phenological stages were negatively sensitive to sunshine hours. Our results will provide scientific support for decision-making in agricultural production practices.

As an intriguing phenomenon, knotting in DNA, proteins, and other molecules has been extensively investigated in recent years, not only because of fundamental interest in knotting but also because of significant effects of knotting on mechanical, rheological, chemical, and biological properties. Some polymers contain side chains, and the effects of side chains on polymer knots are not clear. In this work, we investigate the effects of side chains on knots through Langevin dynamics simulations of knot diffusion along a stretched polymer with side chains. When the gap between side chains is larger than the knot size; each side chain acts as a barrier to slow down the knot diffusion. We find that how a knot crosses the barrier by a side chain resembles how a polymer translocates a pore. Inspired by the latter, we find a simple empirical expression for the free energy barrier caused by a side chain: Fbarrier/kBT ≈ 75Rg/Lknot, where kB is the Boltzmann constant, T is the temperature, Rg is the radius of gyration of a side chain, and Lknot is the contour length of the knot core. The equations and numerical results obtained in this work can guide the rational control of knot diffusivity along a polymer by side chains. In addition, our results provide insights into the understanding of knots in peptides and single-stranded DNA where side chains are common. Furthermore, this work makes a connection between two interesting phenomena for polymers - knotting and pore translocation.

Copyright © 2019 American Chemical Society. We use Brownian dynamics simulations to study the conformational states of knots on tensioned chains. Focusing specifically on the 81 knot, we observe knot conformational state hopping and show that the process can be described by a two-state kinetic model in the presence of an external force. The distribution of knot conformational states depends on the applied chain tension, which leads to a force-dependent distribution of knot untying pathways. We generalize our findings by considering the untying pathways of other knots and find that the way knots untie is generally governed by the force applied to the chain. From a broader perspective, being able to influence how a knot unties via external force can potentially be useful for applications of single-molecule techniques in which knots are unwanted.

The bounded noises as a new typed non-Gaussian noise have important practical significance. In this paper, the steady state and transient dynamical properties of the population growth model subjected to the cross-correlated sine-Wiener bounded noise are investigated based on the approximate Fokker–Planck Equation. The analytical expressions of stationary probability distribution function and extinction time of the population growth model are obtained. The results show that the bounded noise intensity and the cross-correlated bounded noise intensity can cause the population extinction, in particular, the population density are sensitive to the environmental fluctuation (multiplicative noise) and the self-correlated time. On the other hand, the effects of noise intensities on the extinction time are discussed. The results indicate that the extinction time can be decreased with the intrinsic stochasticity (additive noise) and the self-correlated time increasing. For the positive correlated case, the result is similar to the additive noise and the self-correlated time. However, for the negative correlated case, the extinction time can be increased with the intensity increasing. In particular, the environmental fluctuation (multiplicative noise) causes noise-enhanced stability for the negative correlated case, and the extinction time firstly decreases for the small environmental fluctuation, and then increases for the large environmental fluctuation for the positive correlated case. The numerical results are in basic agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The design and synthesis of highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters with an electroluminescence wavelength beyond 600 nm remains a great challenge for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To solve this issue, three TADF molecules, xDMAC–BP (x = 1, 2, 3), are developed in combination with the rigid planar dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (BP) acceptor core and different numbers of 9,9-dimethylacridan (DMAC) donors. All these emitters possess stable internal charge transfer and a large dihedral angle between the donors and planar BP core. The emission wavelength can be regulated from 541 to 605 nm by increasing the number of the donor DMAC units because of the controllable tuning of the intramolecular charge transfer effect and the molecular geometrical structure. The photoluminescence quantum yields of these emitters are improved from 42 to 89% with the increase in the number of DMAC units. The current study focuses on the single-lap adhesively bonded joint of carbon fiber reinforced resin (CFRR), a kind of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs), and metal with/without adhesive defect under coupled hygrothermal environment. Theoretical mechanical model, containing key geometric and position parameters of the interfacial defect, is established and solved by differential quadrature method (DQM). Influences of the coupled hygrothermal condition, external mechanical loads, adhesive defect size and position as well as adherend materials to interfacial stresses are explored and discussed. Numerical examples show the significance of consideration of hygrothermal environment for the interfacial stresses, especially the importance of temperature gradient. Taking into account the hygrothermal environment makes the stress fields more complex. The current study may offer theoretical references to investigations of failure mechanisms of adhesively bonded structures of dissimilar materials operating in complex environment conditions.

A major challenge in understanding radiative forcing of aerosols is accurately monitoring the light absorbing components and clarifying the main reasons of their spatial and temporal variations. In this study, the optical properties of light-absorbing carbon (LAC) in aerosols were measured over one year and the impacts from various emission sources and other influencing factors were analyzed at three sites (suburban (NJU), urban (PAES) and industrial (NUIST) in Nanjing, a typical polluted city in eastern China. With an improved method that combines online and offline techniques, we revised the multiple scattering correction factors and significantly reduced the uncertainty in measurement of absorption coefficients of black carbon (BC). The result reveals the necessity of developing the regional dependent factor for estimation of BC absorption. Relatively large mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of BC was found in summer and industrial region (NUIST), and the mixing state and coating relevant with secondary aerosol formation were the main reasons for such seasonal and site dependent variations. Distinct seasonal variations existed in the MAE of brown carbon (BrC) at NJU. In the winter, BrC from primary emissions such as diesel vehicles had a stronger absorption ability than that from secondary aerosol formation. The lowest MAE values of BrC appeared in summer, reflecting the formation of the non-absorbing biogenic secondary organic aerosol, and the effect of photobleaching. At the urban site PAES, BrC was expected to be mainly from gasoline vehicles and transport of biomass burning emissions, and had a stronger light absorbing ability than the other two sites. The results of simultaneous observations at NJU and PAES indicated that the formation of fresh secondary organic aerosol enhanced the optical absorption of BC but reduced that of BrC. The impacts of various influencing factors on LAC provided effective ways to alleviate their regional radiative forcing at the city scale.

We map the likelihood of GW190521, the heaviest detected binary black hole (BBH) merger, by sampling under different mass and spin priors designed to be uninformative. We find that a source-frame total mass of $\sim$$150 M_{\odot}$ is consistently supported, but posteriors in mass ratio and spin depend critically on the choice of priors. We confirm that the likelihood has a multi-modal structure with peaks in regions of mass ratio representing very different astrophysical scenarios. The unequal-mass region ($m_2 / m_1 < 0.3$) has an average likelihood $\sim$$e^6$ times larger than the equal-mass region and a maximum likelihood $\sim$$e^2$ larger. Using ensembles of samples across priors, we examine the implications of qualitatively different BBH sources that fit the data. We find that the equal-mass solution has poorly constrained spins and at least one black hole mass that is difficult to form via stellar collapse due to (pulsational) pair instability. The unequal-mass solution can avoid this mass gap entirely but requires a negative effective spin and a precessing primary. Both of these scenarios are more easily produced by dynamical formation channels than field binary co-evolution. Drawing representative samples from each region of the likelihood map, we find a sensitive comoving volume-time $\mathcal{O}(10)$ times larger in the mass gap region than the gap-avoiding region. Accounting for this distance effect, the likelihood still reverses the advantage to favor the gap-avoiding scenario by a factor of $\mathcal{O}(100)$ before including mass and spin priors. Posterior samplers can be driven away from this high-likelihood region by common prior choices meant to be uninformative, making GW190521 parameter inference sensitive to the choice of mass and spin priors. We perform a detailed parameter estimation study of binary black hole merger events reported by Zackay et al. [Phys. Rev. D 100, 023007 (2019)] and Venumadhav et al. [Phys. Rev. D 101, 083030 (2020)]. These are some of the faintest signals reported so far, and hence, relative to the loud events in the GWTC-1 catalog [B. P. Abbott et al. (LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations), Phys. Rev. X 9, 031040 (2019)], the data should have lesser constraining power on their intrinsic parameters. Hence we examine the robustness of parameter inference to choices made in the analysis, as well as any potential systematics. We check the impact of different methods of estimating the noise power spectral density, different waveform models, and different priors for the compact object spins. For most of the events, the resulting differences in the inferred values of the parameters are much smaller than their statistical uncertainties. The estimation of the effective spin parameter ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{eff}}$, i.e., the projection of the mass-weighted total spin along the angular momentum, can be sensitive to analysis choices for two of the sources with the largest effective spin magnitudes, GW151216 and GW170403. The primary differences arise from using a 3D isotropic spin prior: the tails of the posterior distributions should be interpreted with care and due consideration of the other data analysis choices.

For continuous and efficient oil/water separation and adsorption of dyes, coconut shell powder was grafted onto the surface of quartz sand by dip-coating method to make coconut shell powder-covered quartz sand filter media (CSQS) with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties and superoleophilic and underoil highly hydrophobic properties. The contact angles of the underwater oil and underoil water with CSQS were more than 151.2&deg, and 134.2&deg, respectively. A continuous oil/water separation device was designed. The separation device filled with CSQS can separate oil/water mixture (whether heavy or light oil) into water and oil at the same time with a separation efficiency of above 99.92%. The filter layer can be recovered through reverse extrusion even after lyophobic liquid penetrated the filter layer, hence, the separation efficiency of the filter layer was still above 99.99% for diesel and water mixture. Simultaneously, CSQS can effectively adsorb methylene blue with the highest removal rate as 98.94%. CSQS can maintain stable wettability under harsh environment conditions. This paper provides a new idea on continuous and efficient oil/water separation and simultaneous dye adsorption.

Pentacyclic triterpenes (PTs) are the active ingredients of many medicinal herbs and pharmaceutical formulations, and are well-known for their anti-inflammatory activity. On the other hand, anti-inflammatory effects of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) have recently drawn much attention. In this study, we found that a variety of naturally occurring PTs sapogenins and saponins could stimulate the phosphorylation of AMPK, and identified δ-oleanolic acid (10) as a potent AMPK activator. Based on these findings, 23 saponin derivatives of δ-oleanolic acid were synthesized in order to find more potent anti-inflammatory agents with improved pharmacokinetic properties. The results of cellular assays showed that saponin 29 significantly inhibited LPS-induced secretion of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 in THP1-derived macrophages. Preliminary mechanistic studies showed that 29 stimulated the phosphorylation of AMPK and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). The bioavailability of 29 was significantly improved in comparison with its aglycon. More importantly, 29 showed significant anti-inflammatory and liver-protective effects in LPS/D-GalN-induced fulminant hepatic failure mice. Taken together, PTs saponins hold promise as therapeutic agents for inflammatory diseases.

The fabrication and characterization of a magnetic micro sensor (MMS) with two magnetic field effect transistors (MAGFETs) based on the commercial complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process are investigated. The magnetic micro sensor is a three-axis sensing type. The structure of the magnetic microsensor is composed of an x/y-MAGFET and a z-MAGFET. The x/y-MAGFET is employed to sense the magnetic field (MF) in the x- and y-axis, and the z-MAGFET is used to detect the MF in the z-axis. To increase the sensitivity of the magnetic microsensor, gates are introduced into the two MAGFETs. The sensing current of the MAGFET enhances when a bias voltage is applied to the gates. The finite element method software Sentaurus TCAD was used to analyze the MMS&rsquo, s performance. Experiments show that the MMS has a sensitivity of 182 mV/T in the x-axis MF and a sensitivity of 180 mV/T in the y-axis MF. The sensitivity of the MMS is 27.8 mV/T in the z-axis MF.

We investigate the use of artificial neural networks (NNs) as an alternative tool to current analytical methods for recognizing knots in a given polymer conformation. The motivation is twofold. First, it is of interest to examine whether NNs are effective at learning the global and sequential properties that uniquely define a knot. Second, knot classification is an important and unsolved problem in mathematical and physical sciences, and NNs may provide insights into this problem. Motivated by these points, we generate millions of polymer conformations for five knot types: 0, 3_{1}, 4_{1}, 5_{1}, and 5_{2}, and we design various NN models for classification. Our best model achieves a five-class classification accuracy of above 99% on a polymer of 100 monomers. We find that the sequential modeling ability of recurrent NNs is crucial for this result, as it outperforms feed-forward NNs and successfully generalizes to differently sized conformations as well. We present our methods and suggest that deep learning may be used in specific applications of knot detection where some error is permissible. Hopefully, with further development, NNs can offer an alternative computational method for knot identification and facilitate knot research in mathematical and physical sciences.

Activation of AMPK emerges as a potential therapeutic approach to metabolic diseases. AdipoRon is claimed to be an adiponectin receptor agonist that activates AMPK through adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1). However, AdipoRon also exhibits moderate inhibition of mitochondrial complex I, leading to increased risk of lactic acidosis. In order to find novel AdipoRon analogues that activate AMPK without inhibition of complex I, 27 analogues of AdipoRon were designed, synthesized and biologically evaluated. As results, benzyloxy arylamide B10 was identified as a potent AMPK activator without inhibition of complex I. B10 dose-dependently improved glucose tolerance in normal mice, and significantly lowered fasting blood glucose level and ameliorated insulin resistance in db/db diabetic mice. More importantly, unlike the pan-AMPK activator MK-8722, B10 did not cause cardiac hypertrophy, probably owing to its selective activation of AMPK in the muscle tissue but not in the heart tissue. Together, B10 represents a novel class of AMPK activators with promising therapeutic potential against metabolic disease.

We perform a statistical inference of the astrophysical population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed during the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, including events reported in the GWTC-1 and IAS catalogs. We derive a novel formalism to fully and consistently account for events of arbitrary significance. We carry out a software injection campaign to obtain a set of mock astrophysical events subject to our selection effects, and use the search background to compute the astrophysical probabilities $p_{\rm astro}$ of candidate events for several phenomenological models of the BBH population. We emphasize that the values of $p_{\rm astro}$ depend on both the astrophysical and background models. Finally, we combine the information from individual events to infer the rate, spin, mass, mass-ratio and redshift distributions of the mergers. The existing population does not discriminate between random spins with a spread in the effective spin parameter, and a small but nonzero fraction of events from tidally-torqued stellar progenitors. The mass distribution is consistent with one having a cutoff at $m_{\rm max} = 41^{+10}_{-5}\,\rm M_\odot$, while the mass ratio favors equal masses; the mean mass ratio $\bar q> 0.67$. The rate shows no significant evolution with redshift. We show that the merger rate restricted to BBHs with a primary mass between 20 and $30\, \rm M_\odot$, and a mass ratio $q > 0.5$, and at $z \sim 0.2$, is 1.5 to $5.3\,{\rm Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}}$ (90\% c.l.); these bounds are model independent and a factor of $\sim 3$ tighter than that on the local rate of all BBH mergers, and hence are a robust constraint on all progenitor models. Including the events in our catalog increases the Fisher information about the BBH population by $\sim 47\%$, and tightens the constraints on population parameters., 23 pages, 13 figures. This study describes the fabrication of an ammonia gas sensor (AGS) using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)&ndash, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique. The structure of the AGS features interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) and a sensing material on a silicon substrate. The IDEs are the stacked aluminum layers that are made using the CMOS process. The sensing material, polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide (PPy/RGO), is synthesized using the oxidation&ndash, reduction method, and the material is characterized using an electron spectroscope for chemical analysis (ESCA), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD). After the CMOS process, the AGS needs post-processing to etch an oxide layer and to deposit the sensing material. The resistance of the AGS changes when it is exposed to ammonia. A non-inverting amplifier circuit converts the resistance of the AGS into a voltage signal. The AGS operates at room temperature. Experiments show that the AGS response is 4.5% at a concentration of 1 ppm NH3, and it exhibits good repeatability. The lowest concentration that the AGS can detect is 0.1 ppm NH3

Knotting is a prevalent phenomenon which occurs at the macroscale (e.g., in headphone cords) and at the microscale (e.g., in DNA and proteins). For a confined polymer, the knotting probability can rapidly approach 100% as the degree of confinement increases, while the mechanism of knot formation in a confined space is unclear. In this work, we use computer simulation to generate equilibrium conformations of a polymer confined in a sphere or a tube and then calculate the knotting probability, pknot, and the knot complexity that is quantified by the minimal crossing number, Ncross. Surprisingly, we find a universal correlation between pknot and ⟨Ncross⟩. Further analysis reveals that the universal correlation is caused by the fact that the distribution of knot types, i.e., the knot spectrum, of a confined polymer follows a universal behavior, only depending on the total knotting probability, regardless of the polymer length, bending stiffness, and degree of confinement. We introduce a new technique to search for gravitational wave events from compact binary mergers that produce a clear signal only in a single gravitational wave detector, and marginal signals in other detectors. Such a situation can arise when the detectors in a network have different sensitivities, or when sources have unfavorable sky locations or orientations. We start with a short list of loud single-detector triggers from regions of parameter space that are empirically unaffected by glitches (after applying signal-quality vetoes). For each of these triggers, we compute evidence for astrophysical origin from the rest of the detector network by coherently combining the likelihoods from all detectors and marginalizing over extrinsic geometric parameters. We report the discovery of two new binary black hole (BBH) mergers in the second observing run of Advanced LIGO and Virgo (O2), in addition to the ones that were reported in Abbott et al. (2018) and Venumadhav et al. (2019). We estimate that the two events have false alarm rates of one in 19 years (60 O2) and one in 11 years (36 O2). One of the events, GW170817A, has primary and secondary masses $m_1^{\rm src} = 56_{-10}^{+16} \, M_\odot$ and $m_2^{\rm src} = 40_{-11}^{+10} \, M_\odot$ in the source frame. The existence of GW170817A should be very informative about the theoretically predicted upper mass gap for stellar mass black holes. Its effective spin parameter is measured to be $\chi_{\rm eff} = 0.5 \pm 0.2$, which is consistent with the tendency of the heavier detected BBH systems to have large and positive effective spin parameters. This study involves the fabrication and measurement of a flexible thermoelectric generator (FTG) using micromachining and electroplating processes. The area of the FTG is 46 &times, 17 mm2, and it is composed of 39 thermocouples in series. The thermoelectric materials that are used for the FTG are copper and nickel. The fabrication process involves patterning a silver seed layer on the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate using a computer numerical control (CNC) micro-milling machine. Thermoelectric materials, copper and nickel, are deposited on the PMMA substrate using an electroplating process. An epoxy polymer is then coated onto the PMMA substrate. Acetone solution is then used to etch the PMMA substrate and to transfer the thermocouples to the flexible epoxy film. The FTG generates an output voltage (OV) as the thermocouples have a temperature difference (&Delta, T) between the cold and hot parts. The experiments show that the OV of the FTG is 4.2 mV at &Delta, T of 5.3 K and the output power is 429 nW at &Delta, T of 5.3 K. The FTG has a voltage factor of 1 &mu, V/mm2K and a power factor of 19.5 pW/mm2K2. The FTG reaches a curvature of 20 m&minus, 1.

Two novel D–A bipolar blue phosphorescent host materials based on phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide: 3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-10-ethyl-10H-phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide (CEPDO) and 10-butyl-3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-10H-phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide (CBPDO) were synthesized and characterized. The photophysical, electrochemical and thermal properties were systematically investigated. CEPDO and CBPDO not only have a high triplet energy but also show a bipolar behavior. Moreover, their fluorescence emission peaks are in the blue fluorescence region at 408 nm and the fluorescence quantum efficiency (Φ) of CEPDO and CBPDO were 62.5% and 59.7%, respectively. Both CEPDO and CBPDO showed very high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (Td) of 409 and 396 °C as well as suitable HOMO and LUMO energy levels. This preferable performance suggests that CEPDO and CBPDO are alternative bipolar host materials for the PhOLEDs.

Relativity requires that a particle's momentum and energy are the same functions of the particle's velocity in all inertial frames. Using the fact that momentum and energy must transform linearly between reference frames, we present a novel derivation of the mass-energy equivalence, namely, the relation that the energy is proportional to the moving mass, with no postulate about the existence of light or its properties. We further prove the mass-velocity relation without relying on momentum and energy conservation or on the Lorentz transformation. It is demonstrated that neither conservation laws nor the Lorentz transformation are necessary to establish those relations, and that those relations have a wider scope of validity than that of the conservation laws and the invariance of the speed of light.

Two formulas which can predict the tensile strength of hybrid composite filled with short fibers and spherical particles are derived in this paper. One of them is suitable for predicting the tensile strength of hybrid composites in which there is no cluster. And another formula is suitable for predicting the tensile strength of hybrid composites in which clusters exist. There are two vital points in this paper. One is that the influence of fiber end on the tensile strength has been quantitatively studied, while most predictions of the tensile strength of the composite from other authors neglect it. Another one is that the influence of reinforcement aggregation on the tensile strength of the composite has been quantitatively studied.

Crop phenology is co-determined by climate change and crop management. Over recent decades, climate change-related alterations in crop phenology have been observed and reported for various global crops. However, attributing changes in crop phenology to climate change is difficult, because there have been concurrent changes in crop management. In this paper, we isolated and quantified the impacts of climate change and crop management on the changes of wheat phenology in China, during the period 1981–2010, using a first-difference multiple regression model. Our results shows: (1) based on observed phenological data, in spring/winter wheat, the mean sowing and emergence date were delayed by 0.91/2.29 and 0.39/0.73 days decade−1; mean anthesis and maturity date advanced by 1.05/2.28 and 0.01/1.42 days decade−1; mean length of vegetative growth period (VGP) and whole growth period (WGP) were shortened by 1.09/2.86 and 0.89/3.69 days decade−1; mean length of reproductive growth period (RGP) was prolonged by 0.55/0.61 days decade−1. (2) At most stations, changing direction of wheat phenology affected by isolated impacts of climate change or crop management was consistent with that affected by combined impacts of climate change and crop management. (3) For observed trends of most phenological stages and growth periods, relative contribution from climate change was smaller than from crop management, and average temperature contributed the most among the three contributors (average temperature, cumulative precipitation, and cumulative sunshine hours) to isolated impacts of climate change on wheat phenology. (4) Crop management over the three decades was shown to have helped reduce the lengths of VGP and WGP, but increase the length of RGP for both spring and winter wheat, implying that shorter-duration varieties with a higher yield or better yield stability in changing climate might have been introduced by farmers.

In this paper, the correlation between probability box (p-box) models was studied, and a method of constructing a correlation probability box (cp-box) model from raw bearing data was proposed. First, a copula function was used to construct the correlation model based on bearing data, and the inverse function of the cumulative distribution function was obtained by selecting the appropriate confidence intervals. Then, confidence bounds were obtained to establish the cp-box model. Next, the cp-box model was discretized into a series of focal elements by an average discretization method, and the measurement information of the cp-box model was obtained by an aggregated uncertainty measurement method. Finally, using a support vector machine as a pattern recognition tool, the effectiveness of the cp-box model was evaluated by a comparison with existing methods. The result shows that the copula function can be added to optimize the p-box model.

Hygrothermal effects and periodic loading often occur in carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) during their service life. For the effective use of such materials for high-performance applications, their nonlinear vibration behavior under hygrothermal effects should be clearly understood. Firstly, this paper establishes a nonlinear vibration mechanical model of the CNTRC plate with different distributions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Then, ordinary differential equations of nonlinear vibration are given by using the Galerkin method and solved by using the harmonic balance method; additionally, a primary resonance and stability of the CNTRC plate under transverse harmonic loads are analyzed by employing the multi-scale method. Finally, for a fixed shear deformation function, effects of geometric size, volume fraction, CNT distribution, and damping coefficient on the nonlinear vibration behaviors of the CNTRC plate are discussed.

3-(Phenylsulfonyl)pyridine (PSP), an unreported acceptor, is used to construct two thermally activated delayed fluorescent materials (TADF), PSPP and PSPBP, with rigid PXZ as donor in 3-position or 3, 5-position of PSP. Both PSPP and PSPBP have large twisted structure due to highly steric hindrance, resulting in small ΔEST. Simultaneously, the frontier molecular orbitals of PSPP and PSPBP show limited spatial overlap, which improve photoluminescence quantum yields. Both emitters have distinct TADF performance. The OLEDs based on these emitters exhibit good photoelectric properties. This work enriches the acceptor selection scope and possesses crucial significance to developing new TADF molecules.

Adequate micro-modeling for composites is the basic and key precondition for their property prediction. This study takes fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) as an example and focuses on the linkages among fiber content, porosity and aggregation in the microstructure of composites, as well as their effect on the overall mechanical properties. A novel two-parameter agglomeration model is developed to take both the tightly packed filler assemblies and the porosity into account, in which the fiber weight fraction is used as an independent variable to express the volumetric composition. Meanwhile, an improved two-scale approach based on Mori–Tanaka (M–T) homogenization theory is utilized to predict the effective properties of FRCs. Three typical FRCs: three-dimensional (3D) randomly distributed FRCs, two-dimensional (2D) randomly distributed ones and unidirectionally (UD) distributed ones, are investigated in detail. The proposed model and method are validated by available experimental data. A parametric study reveals that due to the synergistic influence of fiber content, porosity and local aggregation, a maximum stiffness of FRCs can be achieved by making fibers uniformly dispersed in the matrix and setting the fiber weight fraction to be a certain transition value, which is characterized as a best possible condition with high fiber content and low porosity.

During the past few years, regulation and controlling of the two-dimension (2D) self-assembled supramolecular structure on surface have drawn increasing attention in nanoscience and technology. External stimuli have been widely used to regulate these 2D nanostructures. Among various external stimuli approaches, photo-regulation as one of the most outstanding means of regulation has been extensively studied because different wave bands can lead to molecular conformation variation and new bonds to gain new molecules. In this review, the photo-regulated self-assembled structure on solid surface as well as the photo-reactions of different molecules substituted with photo-sensitive groups are introduced to give us an insight into on-surface photochemistry, which plays an important role on the nano-devices fabrication. Notably, these photo-sensitive behaviors as well as the formed structures on surface were probed at sub-molecule level by unique scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) technique.

To study the spatial inhomogeneity of new particle formation (NPF) in the polluted atmosphere of China, we conducted simultaneous measurements at an urban site near a petrochemical industrial area and a regional background site in the Yangtze River Delta region from September to November 2015. At the urban site we observed a type of local NPF event (number of events: n = 5), in which nucleation was limited to a small area but persisted for 6.8 h on average during the daytime. Formation rates of 5 nm particles (J5) were found to be correlated positively with the H2SO4 proxy (log J5 versus log[H2SO4] slope near 1) in both local and regional events. Furthermore, J5 was enhanced by the anthropogenic volatile organic carbon (VOC) plumes from nearby industrial area in the local events compared to the regional events. Size-dependent aerosol dynamics calculation showed that in comparison with the observed regional events, the local events were featured with high nucleation rate (J1.3 > 1000 cm−3 s−1), high growth rate of sub-3 nm particles (GRsub-3 > 20 nm h−1), and high number concentration of nucleation mode particles (mean peak N5-20: 6 × 104 cm−3). Considering these features, the local NPF events of anthropogenic origin may also be an important contributor to cloud condensation nuclei concentrations in urban and regional scales. In addition, the comparison of simultaneous regional NPF events between the two sites (number of events: n = 7) suggested that regional NPF intensity may be underestimated by the single-point measurement at an urban site, due to the heterogeneity of air masses.

Temperature and relative humidity (RH) are the most important thermodynamic parameters in aerosol formation, yet laboratory studies of nucleation and growth dependencies on temperature and RH are lacking. Here we report the experimentally observed temperature and RH dependences of sulfuric acid aerosol nucleation and growth. Experiments were performed in a flow tube in the temperature range from 248-313 K, RH from 0.8% - 79%, and relative acidity (RA) of sulfuric acid from 6 × 10-5 - 0.38 (2 × 107 - 109 cm-3). Knowledge of aerosol chemistry in densely populated regions is critical for effective reduction of air pollution, while such studies have not been conducted in Changzhou, an important manufacturing base and populated city in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. This work, for the first time, performed a thorough chemical characterization on the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples, collected during July 2015 to April 2016 across four seasons in this city. A suite of analytical techniques was employed to measure the organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs), trace elements, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM2.5; in particular, an Aerodyne soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) was deployed to probe the chemical properties of water-soluble organic aerosol (WSOA). The average PM2.5 concentration was found to be 108.3 µg m−3, and all identified species were able to reconstruct ∼ 80 % of the PM2.5 mass. The WSIIs occupied about half of the PM2.5 mass (∼ 52.1 %), with SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+ as the major ions. On average, nitrate concentrations dominated over sulfate (mass ratio of 1.21), indicating that traffic emissions were more important than stationary sources. OC and EC correlated well with each other and the highest OC ∕ EC ratio (5.16) occurred in winter, suggesting complex OC sources likely including both secondary and primary ones. Concentrations of eight trace elements (Mn, Zn, Al, B, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb) can contribute up to ∼ 5.0 % of PM2.5 during winter. PAH concentrations were also high in winter (140.25 ng m−3), which were predominated by median/high molecular weight PAHs with five and six rings. The organic matter including both water-soluble and water-insoluble species occupied ∼ 21.5 % of the PM2.5 mass. SP-AMS determined that the WSOA had average atomic oxygen-to-carbon (O ∕ C), hydrogen-to-carbon (H ∕ C), nitrogen-to-carbon (N ∕ C), and organic matter-to-organic carbon (OM ∕ OC) ratios of 0.54, 1.69, 0.11, and 1.99, respectively. Source apportionment of WSOA further identified two secondary OA (SOA) factors (a less oxidized and a more oxidized oxygenated OA) and two primary OA (POA) factors (a nitrogen-enriched hydrocarbon-like traffic OA and a local primary OA likely including species from cooking, coal combustion, etc.). On average, the POA contribution outweighed SOA (55 % vs. 45 %), indicating the important role of local anthropogenic emissions in the aerosol pollution in Changzhou. Our measurement also shows the abundance of organic nitrogen species in WSOA, and the source analyses suggest these species are likely associated with traffic emissions, which warrants more investigations on PM samples from other locations.

The [1,5]-hydride shift/cyclization process as a new Csp³–H bond functionalization has made tremendous advances over the past decades. Herein, we describe reaction pathways for a [1,5]-hydride shift that is triggered by acid. In these transformations, the diene isoindoles are generated in situ and undergo a reaction with different dienophiles to provide access to a series of bridged-ring heterocycles and polycycles in good yields (up to 94 %). In addition, we found that the choice of acid played a critical role and could be used to control the structure of the final product.

Knots occur frequently in our daily life and also in long polymers. Studies of spontaneously occurring knots in a linear polymer have focused on their size and probabilities. In this work, we report counterintuitive phenomena about knot sizes and explain them by an analytic theory. Our simulations show that short-range intrachain attractions (repulsions) lead to shrinking (swelling) of knot sizes, trends which follow intuition. However, long-range attractions (repulsions) surprisingly lead to swelling (shrinking) of knot sizes. Such counterintuitive trends are because larger knots contain more interacting monomer pairs if the interaction range is larger than a critical value. The critical interaction range varies from a fraction of to multiple persistence lengths, and so the long-range interaction regime can be reached for DNA, peptide chains, or synthetic polymers under depletion attractions induced by colloids (e.g., proteins) or via Coulomb repulsions. The dynamical assembly of binary black holes (BBHs) in dense star clusters (SCs) is one of the most promising pathways for producing observable gravitational wave (GW) sources, however several other formation scenarios likely operate as well. One of the current outstanding questions is how these different pathways may be distinguished apart. In this paper we suggest a new multi-messenger observable that can be used to constrain the formation of BBH mergers originating from SCs: the electromagnetic signal from tidal disruptions (TDs) of stars by BBHs. Such TDs will show variability in their light curve from the orbital motion of the disruptive BBHs, and can therefore be used to map the BBH orbital period distribution, and thereby also the dynamical mechanisms that eventually drive the BBHs to merger. Using an analytical approach including General Relativistic effects, we find that the orbital period distribution of BBHs within globular clusters peaks on timescales of days, which we argue is unique to this assembly pathway.
