Abstract

International audience; Hydrazine is a chemical of outmost importance in our society, either for organic synthesis or energy purpose. The direct conversion of NH3 to hydrazine is highly appealing but it remains a very difficult task because the degradation of hydrazine is thermodynamically more feasible than the cleavage of the N-H bond of NH3. As a result, any catalyst capable of activating NH3 will thus unavoidably decompose N2H4. Here we show that cavitation bubbles, created by ultrasonic irradiation of aqueous NH3 at a high frequency, act as micro-reactors to activate and convert NH3 to NH species, without assistance of any catalyst, yielding hydrazine at the bubble-liquid interface. The compartmentation of in situ produced hydrazine in the bulk solution, which is maintained close to 30°C, advantageously prevents its thermal degradation, a recurrent problem faced by previous technologies. This work also points towards a path to scavenge •OH radicals by adjusting the NH3 concentration.

Abstract

International audience; Through selected examples, we report here that ultrasound is capable of assisting a solid catalyst in various reactions. Beside improvement of heat and mass transfer induced by the implosion of cavitation bubbles, we show that a synergistic effect can occur between catalysis and ultrasound. In particular, the physical and chemical effects locally exerted on a catalytic surface upon implosion of cavitation bubbles can oxidize metal ions, provide energy to the catalyst/reaction, in situ activate or create catalytic sites and even prevent the catalyst from deactivation. The impact of ultrasound on solid catalyst structures, which may positively or negatively impact the performances of catalysts, is also discussed.

Abstract

We report here, and rationalize, a synergistic effect between a non-noble metal oxide catalyst (CuO) and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) on glucose oxidation. While CuO and HFUS are able to independently oxidize glucose to gluconic acid, the combination of CuO with HFUS led to a dramatic change of the reaction selectivity, with glucuronic acid being formed as the major product. By means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that, under ultrasonic irradiation of water at 550 kHz, the surface lattice oxygen of a CuO catalyst traps H· radicals stemming from the sonolysis of water, making the ring-opening of glucose energetically unfavorable and leaving a high coverage of ·OH radical on the CuO surface, which selectively oxidizes glucose to glucuronic acid. This work also points toward a path to optimize the size of the catalyst particle for an ultrasonic frequency that minimizes the damage to the catalyst, resulting in its successful reuse.

Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass represents an important chemical resource. In the quest for the heightened interest for waste management and the successful utilization of solid waste materials into useful products, cocoa pod husk, an agricultural waste material generated in several metric per year (~ 800, 000 MT/per) is a potential source of lignocellulosic materials for chemicals and bio-fuel production. However, its usage is underutilized. In this work multiple linear regression is performed to model the effects of experimental conditions on the conversion process and determine the conditions that maximize percentage dissolution and overall yields of glucose and xylose. The Seaman scheme for biomass hydrolysis is used to develop kinetic models to describe the dynamics of glucose and xylose production. The results show that the kinetic models agree well with data and the maximum glucose and xylose yields from biomass obtained are respectively 43.49% and 11.24% for higher temperature operations (100–150 °C) and 38.28% and 10.27% for lower temperature operation (30–100 °C). The developed kinetic models accurately predicted the acid concentrations with high of R2 value reaching 0.9878.

Abstract

Bio-Oils derived from biomass pyrolysis are promising feedstock for the direct production of valuable platform chemicals, fuels and energy from renewable and sustainable resources. Among the numerous technologies utilized for biomass pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis technologies are chosen for liquid products yield maximization, and characterized by short residence times for solids and vapors, operating temperatures in above ≥500 °C and very high heating rates. Inspired by the vast potential of biomass pyrolysis bio-oils, a thermochemical conversion (fast pyrolysis) and characterization of cocoa pod husks, an abundant agricultural biomass waste from Ghana, West Africa, has been investigated and their potential as renewable feedstock for the production of high-value added chemicals determined by analyzing chemical components of the derived bio-oil. GC–MS analysis of the bio-oil indicated that major constituents were 9, 12-octadecadienoic acid and hexadecanoic acid”. Product distributions revealed 58%wt. of bio-oil, 30%wt. of bio-char and 12%wt. of Non-condensable gas (obtained by difference). Ultimate, proximate, structural composition, calorific value and thermogravimetry analyses were also performed on the cocoa pod husks. Elemental analysis showed that the recovered milled cocoa pod husks contained about 7 elements potentially essential for plant growth.

Abstract

The irradiation of concentrated feeds of carbohydrates in alcoholic solution by high-frequency ultrasound (550 kHz) induces the formation of alkylpolyglycosides (APGs). This work is distinct from previous reports in that it does not involve any (bio)catalyst or activating agent, it takes place at only 40 °C, thus avoiding degradation of carbohydrates, and it selectively yields APGs with a degree of polymerization in a window of 2¿7, an important limitation of the popular Fischer glycosylation. This ultrasound-based technology proved successful with a range of different valuable carbohydrates and alkyl alcohols. Abstract

Porous-structured CuO-CeO2 nanospheres were synthesized using a hydrothermal method and were tested as catalysts for the direct oxidation of cellobiose to gluconic acid. Catalytic reaction along with catalyst characterization results and 18O-oxygen isotope labeled experiments revealed that the surface lattice oxygen of CuO in CuO-CeO2 nanospheres was consumed during the oxidation of cellobiose. This provides a direct evidence of our previous work (Amaniampong et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 54 (2015) 8928–8933). Characterization results further suggested that the lattice oxygen in CeO2 did not participate in the oxidation; nonetheless, the addition of CeO2 to CuO enhanced the surface area of the catalyst composite which was crucial for the reaction. The spent catalyst upon re-oxidation regained its activity. In addition, isotope labeled deuterium oxide (D2O) experiments suggested that hydrogen exchange between the solvent and the substrate (glucose) are not involved in the mechanistic formation of gluconic acid and confirmed the solvent had no direct influence in the formation of gluconic acid.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, Pd-based catalytic model hosted over nitrogen enriched fibrous Porous-Organic-Polymer (POP) is established to execute hydrodeoxygenation of various vegetable oils in producing potential large-scale renewable diesel. Here we report a cost effective synthesis strategy of a new microporous hypercrosslinked POP through the FeCl3 assisted Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction, followed by fabrication of Pd 0-NPs (2-3 nm) with solid gas phase hydrogenation route to deliver a novel catalytic system. This catalyst (called Pd@PPN) exhibits versatile catalytic performance for different types of vegetable oils including palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and rapeseed oil to furnish long chain diesel range alkanes. The catalyst is comprehensively characterized by various spectroscopic tools and shows high stability during five runs of recycling without the leaching of Pd occuring. Our results further reveal that direct decarbonylation (DCN) pathway of fatty acid to produce alkanes with one carbon less is the dominated mechanism. At optimized conditions, using stearic acid to represent the long linear carboxylic acids in the vegetable oils, up to 90 % conversion with 83 % selectivity of C17-alkane has been achieved on our fabricated catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to provide insights into the electronic properties of the catalyst, the mechanistic reaction pathway, the crucial role of catalyst surface and the product selectivity trend. The strong interaction between corrugated polymer-frame-structure and the Pd-NPs suggests there is the presence of high density step sites on the fabricated Pd-NP anchored within the cage of polymer structure. DFT calcualtions also reveal the strong promotional effect of step sites and charge transfer in facilitating rate-limiting steps during the decarbonylation (DCN) pathway and removal of strongly bound intermediates formed during the process, therefore explain the high activity of the fabricated Pd@PPN catayst for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) conversion to produce bio-based alkanes diesel.

Abstract

The depolymerization of cellulose to glucose is a challenging reaction and often constitutes a scientific obstacle in the synthesis of downstream bio-based products. Here, we show that cellulose can be selectively depolymerized to glucose by ultrasonic irradiation in water at a high frequency (525 kHz). The concept of this work is based on the generation of H˙ and ˙OH radicals, formed by homolytic dissociation of water inside the cavitation bubbles, which induce the cleavage of the glycosidic bonds. The transfer of radicals on the cellulose particle surfaces prevents the side degradation of released glucose into the bulk solution, allowing maintaining the selectivity to glucose close to 100%. This work is distinguished from previous technologies in that (i) no catalyst is needed, (ii) no external source of heating is required, and (iii) the complete depolymerization of cellulose is achieved in a selective fashion. The addition of specific radical scavengers coupled to different gaseous atmospheres and ˙OH radical dosimetry experiments suggested that H˙ radicals are more likely to be responsible for the depolymerisation of cellulose., Ultrasonic irradiation of cellulose at a high frequency induces its selective depolymerization to glucose at room temperature and atmospheric pressure within only a few minutes.

Abstract

Conjugated microporous polymers are synthesized through facile one-step direct arylation polymerization of a single monomer unit, 8,11-dibromodithieno[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine, without preactivation of C–H bonds using organometallic reagents. The resulting polymers exhibit hierarchical porous structures and a narrow bandgap of 1.5 eV.

Abstract

The utilization of low frequency ultrasound (US) offers a straightforward and powerful tool for the production of nanostructured materials, in particular for structurally stable, highly crystalline, and shape-controlled catalytic materials. Herein, we report an unconventional strategy for the synthesis of CuO nanoleaves within 5 min of US irradiation. The as-obtained CuO nanoleaves were found to be selective in the base-free aqueous oxidation of glycerol to dicarboxylic acids (78% yield of tartronic and oxalic acids), in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and under mild reaction conditions. Density Functional Theory (DFT) investigations revealed a synergy between the CuO catalyst and H2O2 in maintaining the structural integrity of the catalyst during the reaction, creating alternative efficient pathways for the selective formation of dicarboxylic acids. Isotope labeling experiments using H218O2 further confirmed that oxygen from hydrogen peroxide, not from CuO, was preferentially incorporated into the dicarboxylic acid, significantly preserving the monoclinic structure of the CuO catalyst.

Abstract

International audience; This chapter is focused on the use of high intensity ultrasound for the preparation of nanostructured materials with an emphasis on recent prominent examples of the production of dense or porous metal oxides through sonochemical and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis routes. Sonochemistry enables the synthesis of oxides that are often unachievable by traditional methods or affords known materials with shape, size, and nano/microstructure control under fast reaction conditions. The fundamental principles of acoustic cavitation, as well as the main ultrasonic parameters affecting the cavitation phenomenon, are first summarized. Next, the applications of ultrasound in the synthesis of nanostructured oxide materials following both preparation methods are reviewed. Particular focus is given to the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles for energy applications.

Abstract

Soil quality (SQ) evaluation is an essential tool for the enhancement of agricultural soil management and use. An array of soil attributes, termed soil quality indicators, are used in soil quality estimation due to their sensitivity to disturbance from management practices. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the soil quality (using multivariate ordination technique) of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.) plantations amended with on-farm biomass. The experimental sites were three oil palm plantations located in the southernmost Pattani province of Thailand namely, Ban Chamao (BC), Ban Lipasango (BL) and Ban Bothong (BB) fertilised with fish effluent (FE), empty fruit bunch (EFB) compost and NPK (plus EFB mulch), respectively with completely randomised block design. A minimum dataset (MDS) of soil indicators were defined using multivariate principal component analysis (PCA). The selected MDS comprised mainly geometric mean of microbial enzyme activity (GME), available phosphorus (AP) and moisture content (MC) with per cent contribution towards soil quality index (SQI) (assessed based on PCA after scoring by normalised linear function) in the order: GME (77.3%) > AP (13.6%) > MC (9.1%). Essentially, the activity of enzymes is a crucial ecosystem function (nutrient cycling), further indicating that decreases in soil enzyme activities can be signal for a decline in SQ. GME, AP, and MC effectively differentiated the oil palm plantations and could be important not only in monitoring soil quality enhancement in the present study locations but also in a similar tropical environment with similar edaphic conditions. SQI was not significantly different between the BB (0.81) and BL (0.79) plantations (p = 0.46). However, both BB and BL were higher than in BC (0.65). BB and BL showed low geometric mean of microbial biomass GMB, high soil pH, C, N, GME and qCO2 (metabolic quotient, i.e., the amount of CO2 respired per unit microbial biomass), while the fish effluent amended BC plantation showed the opposite. EFB contains a substantial quantity of nutrients and organic matter (OM) capable of reducing soil acidity, stimulating enzyme activity, and enriching the soil with nutrients with the resultant improvement in SQ. Therefore, a regular practice of returning EFB (either as compost or mulch, with or without mineral NPK) to the soil should be encouraged for smallholder oil palm plantations to improve soil quality and serves as an alternative channel for on-farm biomass disposal.

Abstract

For responding to the rapidly increasing trend of research on biorefinery, a diverse range of furans derived from biomass emerge as versatile platform chemicals for a spectrum of pharmaceutical applications. However, it is a formidable challenge to transform biomass feedstock into valuable furan-based chemicals via complicated cascade reactions. Here, we develop a bifunctional reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-supported catalyst with two controllably intimate active sites (namely Ru species and sulfonic acid groups, respectively) on the graphene sheets. The structural and morphological evolution of the catalyst is characterized by FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM. This catalyst is employed in a biphasic solvent system for the one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-diformyfuran (DFF) which is a high-value pharmaceutical intermediate. We demonstrate that the nanoscale proximity of two active sites and the solvent composition are crucial to the catalytic activity and DFF selectivity in the cascade catalysis. The spatial organization of Ru species and sulfonic acid groups reveals an optimized inter-site distance of 12.5 ± 2.2 nm for the high catalytic activity. A solvent-influenced kinetic model is established and accurately elaborates the regulatory role of toluene (as the co-solvent) on the reaction pathways. More importantly, this bifunctional catalyst can be recycled for 4 times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Taken together, a deep understanding is highlighted which provides clues on the optimization of multifunctional catalysts and the choice of solvent system in the cascade catalysis which is a general unit operation in chemical engineering processes. Abstract

International audience; This systematic experimental investigation reveals that high-frequency ultrasound irradiation (550 kHz) induced oxidation of D-glucose to glucuronic acid in excellent yield without assistance of any (bio)catalyst. Oxidation is induced thanks to the in situ production of radical species in water. Experiments show that the dissolved gases play an important role in governing the nature of generated radical species and thus the selectivity for glucuronic acid. Importantly, this process yields glucuronic acid instead of glucuronate salt typically obtained via conventional (bio)catalyst routes, which is of huge interest in respect of downstream processing. Investigations using disaccharides revealed that radicals generated by high frequency ultrasound were also capable of promoting tandem hydrolysis/ oxidation reactions. The necessity to diversify our resources and the general trend of reducing our CO 2 footprint have opened opportunities to produce chemicals, materials and fuels from renewable feedstocks. In this context, the sugar platform is now the subject of intense investigations. Despite the fact that many promising routes to valuable bio-based chemicals and fuels have been reported through (bio)catalytic conversion or fermentation of sugars, the industrial deployment of these pathways is often hampered by a lack of productivity and a costly downstream processing. Clearly, the search of novel technologies has become a priority in this field 1. Oxidation of D-glucose to glucuronic acid is a typical example. Glucuronic acid is a highly valuable chemical and one of the organic building blocks of hyaluronic acid whose current worldwide market is estimated to be over $1 billion 2. Glucuronic acid is widely used in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry for the synthesis of modified drugs. It is also largely used as an additive in the food industry, as an active compound in the pharmaceutical industry particularly for the preparation of skin-care products, as an antioxidant, and as a precursor for the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) 3. Furthermore, it is an intermediate for the production of L-gulonic acid and 6-amino-L-gulonic acid, an interesting building block for the synthesis of fine chemicals, polymers and surfactants 4. Nowadays, the synthesis of D-glucuronic acid is achieved via the enzymatic oxidation of D-glucose at the C6 position by Ustulina deusta bacteria and bacterium industrium var. Hoshigaki under aerobic conditions 4. Microbe separation, low process productivity and selectivity, as well as the disposal/recycling of waste water, are the main current drawbacks. Solid catalysts have also been explored for this reaction. Nonetheless, to date, from D-glucose, noble metal catalysts exhibit very low selectivity for D-glucuronic acid. Supported metal catalysts like platinum or palladium dispersed over carbon indeed preferentially lead to the oxidation of the C1 position of glucose, resulting in the formation of D-gluconic acid 5. Abstract

Nanostructured mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles with high specific surface area and average crystallite domain sizes within 2 nm and 30 nm have been prepared via the sol-gel and hydrothermal procedures. The characteristics of produced nanoparticles have been tested using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), and Raman Spectroscopy as a function of temperature for their microstructural, porosity, morphological, structural and absorption properties. The as-synthesized TiO2 nanostructures were attempted as catalysts in Rhodamine B and Sudan III dyes' photocatalytic decomposition in a batch reactor with the assistance of Ultra Violet (UV) light. The results show that for catalysts calcined at 300 °C, ∼100 % decomposition of Sudan III dye was observed when Hydrothermal based catalyst was used whiles ∼94 % decomposition of Rhodamine B dye was observed using the sol-gel based catalysts. These synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles have promising potential applications in the light aided decomposition of a wide range of dye pollutants.

Abstract

A detailed physicochemical properties of aqueous solutions of alizarin red S − tin (II) chloride, has been thoroughly investigated by extensively exploring the effect of pH, concentration and temperature on the optimal conditions for the formation of tin (II)-alizarin red S (ARS-Sn II) complex. UV-Vis spectra, electrical conductivity and pH method were also used to characterize the final product. The stoichiometry of the reaction complex formation was determined via different referential methods. It was observed that, the reaction complex was formed when the concentrations were smaller than a certain limit (10−5 M). Adjusting the pH of the reaction (typically from 3.7 to 6.0) also resulted in the formation of the complex. The formed complex was highly stable in dark conditions (absence of sunlight) and at ambient temperature. Without the use of additives and by employing the investigated optimal conditions (i.e. pH: 5.0, i: 6 mA/cm2, t: 5 min, C: 0.1 M, d: 1.273 × 10−4 cm), electrodeposition of tin (II) was demonstrated to be successful.
