Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained remarkable attention as a novel wastewater treatment that simultaneously generates electricity. The low activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains one of the most critical bottlenecks limiting the development of MFCs. To date, although research on biochar as an electrocatalyst in MFCs has made tremendous progress, further improvements are needed to make it economically practical. Recently, biochars have been considered to be ORR electrocatalysts with developmental potential. In this review, the ORR mechanism and the essential requirements of ORR catalysts in MFC applications are introduced. Moreover, the focus is to highlight the material selection, properties, and preparation of biochar electrocatalysts, as well as the evaluation and measurement of biochar electrodes. Additionally, in order to provide comprehensive information on the specific applications of biochars in the field of MFCs, their applications as electrocatalysts, are then discussed in detail, including the uses of nitrogen-doped biochar and other heteroatom-doped biochars as electrocatalysts, poisoning tests for biochar catalysts, and the cost estimation of biochar catalysts. Finally, profound insights into the current challenges and clear directions for future perspectives and research are concluded.

Clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae is an important disease on cruciferous crops worldwide. Management of clubroot is challenging, largely because of the millions of resting spores produced within an infected root that can survive dormant in the soil for many years. This study was conducted to investigate some of the environmental conditions that may affect the survival of resting spores in the soil. Soil samples containing clubroot resting spores (1 × 107 spores/g soil) were stored at various temperatures for 2 years. Additionally, other samples were buried in soil or kept on the soil surface in the field. The content of P. brassicae DNA and the numbers of viable spores in the samples were assessed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and pathogenicity bioassays, respectively. The results indicated that 4°C, 20°C, and being buried in the soil were more conductive conditions for spore survival than −20°C, 30°C, and at the soil surface. Most (99.99%) of the spores kept on the soil surface were nonviable, suggesting a negative effect of light on spore viability. Additional experiments confirmed the negative effect of ultraviolet light on spore viability because spores receiving 2 and 3 h ultraviolet light exhibited lower disease potential and contained less DNA content than the nontreated control. Finally, this work confirmed that DNA-based quantification methods such as qPCR can be poor predictors of P. brassicae disease potential because of the presence and persistence of DNA from dead spores.

Soil pollution endangers human health and ecological balance, which is why finding a highly efficient way to deal with pollutants is necessary. Biological method is an environmentally friendly treatment method. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), which combine electrochemistry with biological methods, have been widely used to remediate polluted environments, including wastewater, sludge, sediment, and soil. In BESs, redox reactions occur on electrodes with electroactive bacteria, which convert pollutants into low-polluting or nonpolluting substances. With BESs being a promising technology in the remediation field, the decontamination mechanisms and applications in soil conducted by BESs have attracted much attention. Therefore, to better understand the research progress of BESs, this paper mainly summarizes the mechanism of different classified BESs. The applications of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) in four pollutants (petroleum, heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics) and the possible applications of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) in soil are discussed. The main problems in BESs and possible future development directions are also evaluated.

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), especially transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC), have received great attention in recent years due to their advantageous properties and applications in various fields and are inevitably released into the environment during their life cycle. However, the effect of natural nanocolloids, widely distributed in the aquatic environment, on the environmental transformation and ecotoxicity of ENMs remains largely unknown. In this study, the effects of natural nanocolloids were compared to humic acid on the environmental transformation and ecotoxicity of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2), a representative TMDC. SLMoS2 with nanocolloids or humic acid (HA) enhanced their dispersion and Mo ion release in deionized water. Nanocolloids induced growth inhibition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevation, and cell permeability. Low-toxicity SLMoS2 combined with nanocolloids will enhance the above adverse effects. SLMoS2-nanocolloids induced serious damage (cell distortion and deformation), SLMoS2 internalization, and metabolic perturbation on Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). In contrast, the addition of HA induced the growth promotion and lower ROS level, inhibited the internalization of SLMoS2, and mitigated metabolic perturbation on C. vulgaris. This work provides insights into the effect of natural nanocolloids on the behaviors and biological risks of ENMs in aquatic environments, deserving substantial future attention.

Solar steam generation has attracted interest in water purification and seawater desalination as an efficient solar energy conversion method. However, the complex preparation process and limited efficiency restrict the practical applications of solar-generated steam. Here, we report a three-dimensional wood membrane inside coated with MoS2 (WM-H, with S defects) for efficient seawater desalination. The vertically aligned mesoporous wood channels and their inner microstructures increase the contact interface between water and MoS2 in wood. The formation of S defects allows the surface temperature of the membrane to reach ∼53 °C under 1 sun illumination. The MoS2-coated wood with S defects exhibited an excellent evaporation flux (1.46 kg m−2 h−1, one sun), with a solar thermal conversion efficiency of 82.5%. The adsorption peak values of Na+ on the two sides of MoS2 with defects are 2.17 times and 1.49 times higher than those of MoS2 without defects. The wood-based design provides an inexpensive way to capture solar energy and generate steam.

Interactions between microorganisms and clay minerals influence the transport and cycling of metal contaminants in both marine and terrestrial environments. The present study was conducted to quantify the adsorption of dissolved cadmium, Cd(II), under seawater-like conditions to the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, three common clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite), as well as cell-clay aggregates. We show here that the Synechococcus-only experiments removed the most Cd above pH 5.5, followed in decreasing order by aggregates of 50% cells:50% individual clays, aggregates of cells and all 3 clays, and individual clays. Electron microscope imaging showed that clays associated in a tangential edge-on orientation to the cells in Synechococcus-clay mineral aggregates. A non-electrostatic surface complexation modeling approach was used to fit Cd adsorption onto Synechococcus cells and individual clay minerals. The resulting Cd binding constants were then used in consort with surface functional group pKa values and site concentrations to accurately predict the extent of Cd adsorption onto the Synechococcus-clay mineral aggregates using the component additivity (CA) approach. We observed that the addition of cyanobacterial cells to clay mineral suspensions led to significantly larger mean aggregate sizes of clay minerals, enhancing the clay sedimentation rate. Although specifically focused on Cd, our study indicates that the ratio of bacterial plankton to clay minerals is an important determinant in terms of understanding the rate with which metals are transferred from the water column to the seafloor.

There is a growing need to eliminate antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment and mitigate widespread antibiotic resistance. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was successfully synthesized via facile thermal polymerization approach and its potential for adsorption treatment of ARGs in water was examined. Batch adsorption experimental results revealed that g-C3N4 powders had robust adsorption activity for the gene ampC and ermB. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were systematically investigated to explain the adsorption mechanism. The apparent adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 180 min. The adsorption process effectively removed ARGs (ampC and ermB) from water with 3.2 log and 4.2 log reductions, respectively. In addition, experimental data were analyzed by several models and simulated well with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. It indicated that adsorption process might be dominated by the chemical rate-limiting step. Moreover, the effects of temperature and pH on the removal of ARGs were conducted and the isoelectric point (IEP) was obtained. Finally, we have demonstrated that the g-C3N4 is a novel adsorbent and can be used as column packing to remove ARGs by filtration.

Bystander effects in biological systems are the responses shown by nontargeted neighboring cells, and critical to the bio-nano interface interactions. In addition to direct effects, bystander effects also determine the design, applications and safety of nanomaterials, although the related information of nanomaterial-induced bystander effects remain largely unknown. A coculture system of A549 and THP-1 was established to mimic the lung microenvironment to study the bystander effects of WS2 nanosheets (representative transition-metal dichalcogenide nanosheets) on microenvironment macrophages during the inhalation exposure or the nanomaterial biomedical application in the lung. Lung cells exposed to WS2 nanosheet resulted in an increase in reactive oxygen species and the depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential in neighboring macrophages. Bystander exposure also induced macrophage polarization toward the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, which is adverse to disease therapy. Metabolomics showed that WS2 nanosheets disturbed the energy metabolism and amino acid metabolism of macrophages, consistent with the metabolic characteristics of M2 macrophages. Nitric oxide-transforming growth factor-β1 played an important mediator in the bystander effects. Importantly, WS2 nanosheet bystander exposure affected macrophage phagocytosis and migration and altered the macrophage immune response to endotoxin. This study improves the current understanding of bio-nano interactions and highlights the importance of neighboring cell responses, allowing us to use the maximum benefits of nanomaterials while limiting their adverse bystander effects.

The selection and breeding of Cd-safe cultivars (CSCs) has been used to minimize the influx of Cd into the human food chain. The pot-culture experiment combined with the field-culture experiment were conducted to screen out CSCs, i.e. the cultivars accumulating Cd at low enough level for safe consumption in their edible parts when grown in contaminated soils, were screened out and explored among the crop cultivars. We used 25 Chinese soybean cultivars in different Cd contaminated soils to assess the performance of this new method. Variations in uptake, enrichment, and translocation of Cd among these cultivars were studied to screen out soybean CSCs. The accumulation of Cd in the five soybean genotypes was lower than 0.20 mg kg−1 under 1.0 mg Cd kg−1 treatment, and the EF and TF were lower than 1.0. The field studies further identified that cultivar Shennong 10, Tiedou 36 and Liaodou 21 fit the criteria for CSCs, which were suitable to be planted in low-Cd (Cd concentration −1) contaminated soils. The results can provide scientific methods for screening low-Cd accumulation in soybeans and can provide a path for controlling, treating and remedying Cd-contaminated agricultural soils to make grains safe for human consumption.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are considered to be a type of emerging contaminant; their interaction with biochar (BC) could affect their dissemination and fate in the environment. Although adsorption of ARGs onto bulk-BC has been reported, the interaction with nanosized BC (nano-BC) is largely unknown. In this study, the interactions of a model extracellular DNA (eDNA, calf thymus DNA) and two typical ARGs (ampC and ermB) extracted from a natural river with bulk- and nano-BCs from two pyrolysis temperatures (400 and 700 °C) were investigated. Only adsorption was observed on bulk-BCs, while not only adsorption but also fragmentation of these eDNA molecules was found to occur on nano-BCs. Also, their replication was greatly inhibited by nano-BCs. The electron paramagnetic resonance results indicated that hydroxyl radicals produced from persistent free radicals (PFRs) on nano-BCs played a major role in the damage of eDNA. Moreover, the direct contact with nonradical reacting sites and PFRs on nano-BCs also contributed to the decay of eDNA. Comparatively, PFRs in bulk-BCs were difficult to be reached by eDNA because of steric hindrance and played a negligible role in destroying eDNA. These findings highlight the importance of the size effect in evaluating the reactivity and related environmental risks of PFRs on BC and improve our understanding on the interaction between ARGs and BC.

Highly efficient approaches using nanomaterials for ion capture and desalination have been widely explored to address fresh water scarcity worldwide; however, the complex preparation process and the large-scale and high-density perforation of porous graphene layers remain technical challenges. Herein, we found that sunlight-assisted tailoring of surface nanostructures involving controllable morphological and structural alterations of graphene unequivocally improved the ion adsorption and ion filtration performance. Notably, the interlayer spacing of single-layer graphene could be sufficiently tuned via lighting control to promote selective interactions between ions and nanosheets. After 7 d simulated sunlight treatment, the transformed SLG (SLG-S7) exhibited 86.1%, 77.3% and 46.1% increases of adsorption capacity for Na+, Pb2+ and Fe3+ in the complex ion system, respectively. Notably, the adsorption capacity of SLG-S7 for single Pb2+ was even 2.3-fold greater than that of pristine SLG. Further, the layer-stacked SLG-S7 membrane achieved super water fluxes (167.1 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and a high separation performance without sacrificing salt ion rejection, which was attributed to the sunlight-induced larger water transport channels and defect-free nanosheets in the membrane. This work provides new insight for the design of novel graphene-based nanostructures to address the increasingly serious water contamination issue and the scarcity of fresh water.

In Canada, clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae) disease is managed mainly by planting clubroot resistant (CR) canola (Brassica napus). New pathotypes of P. brassicae have emerged recently, however, which are virulent on most CR canola cultivars. To understand the impact of cultivar rotation on pathotype abundance, greenhouse experiments were conducted in which different canola cultivar rotations were grown in a soil mix containing equal amounts of pathotypes 5X and 3, which are virulent and avirulent, respectively, on CR canola. The rotation treatments included: T1, the same susceptible cultivar planted over four cycles; T2, the same CR cultivar planted over four cycles; and T3, different CR cultivars planted in each cycle. Clubroot severity increased from cycles one to four in all treatments, with the exception of one CR cultivar in T3 that may carry a different source of resistance. Pathogen populations were recovered with a susceptible bait crop and pathotyped on the differentials of Williams plus a CR host (B. napus ‘Mendel’). The percentage of galls classified as pathotype 5X in T1 declined from 50% to 6.7% over the course of the experiment, while galls classified as pathotype 5X increased from 50% to 66.7% in both T2 and T3. Quantitative PCR analysis of the soil with pathotype 5X-specific primers generally confirmed an increase in 5X DNA. The results suggest that continuous planting of CR canola favours a rapid proliferation of virulent pathotypes of P. brassicae, as indicated by the increases in pathotype 5X observed in this study.

Nanocolloids (Ncs) are ubiquitous in natural surface waters. However, the effects of Ncs on the fate and ecotoxicity of graphene oxide (GO, a popular engineered nanomaterial (ENM)) remain largely unknown. Ncs exhibit strong adsorption affinity (KL = 1.93 L/mg) and high adsorption capacity (176.2 mg/g) for GO. After Ncs hybridization, GO nanosheets became scrolls, and the aggregation rate of GO decreased. The influence of humic acid and Ncs on GO toxicity was compared. Humic acid mitigated the phytotoxicity of GO. However, GO and GO-Ncs were found to have an envelopment effect on algal cells, and both could enter algal cells. GO-Ncs induced higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, stronger DNA damage and plasmolysis, and more obvious inhibition of photosynthesis compared to GO. Proteomic analysis revealed that photosystem I- and II-related proteins (e.g., E1ZQR2 and E1ZPG5) were regulated more significantly in the GO-Ncs groups than in the GO groups. A combined proteomic and metabolomic analysis showed that inhibition of carbohydrate, fatty acid, and amino acid metabolism contributed to ROS generation. Given the high concentrations and activity of Ncs, the above results highlight the need for reconsideration of the Ncs-mediated environmental behaviors and risks of ENMs and other pollutants.

Emerging transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanosheets, such as WS2 nanosheets, have shown tremendous potential for use in many fields such as intelligent manufacturing and environmental protection. However, considerable knowledge gaps still exist regarding the impact of TMDCs on environmental risks, especially risks involving organic pollutants. Here, a synergistic toxicity between WS2 nanosheets and organic pollutants (triclosan or tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate) was found using the median-effect and combination index equations. In particular, the effect of synergy had a higher magnitude at low cytotoxicity levels and a noncytotoxic concentration of WS2 nanosheets clearly enhanced the cytotoxicity and intracellular accumulation of organic pollutants. On the one hand, WS2 nanosheets damaged the plasma membrane and cytoskeleton, resulting in increased membrane permeability and organic pollutant uptake. On the other hand, as shown by fluorescence substrate accumulation experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, WS2 nanosheets affected the secondary structure of the efflux pumps and competitively bound with efflux pumps, blocking xenobiotic removal. This work emphasized that TMDCs, especially at the noncytotoxic level, in combination with organic pollutants caused damage that cannot be ignored, providing insight into comprehensive safety assessment and the specific toxicological mechanisms of TMDCs that accompany organic pollutant exposure.

Many countries have developed university/college towns with specific characteristics (temporal, spatial, structural, and functional aspects). During the land development, there were obvious changes in soil metal levels and distribution patterns attributed to anthropogenic activities, thus having induced comparable results in university/college towns due to similar anthropogenic activities. Until now, specific studies on the metal status in university/college towns, especially the variation inside and outside of a campus were rarely involved. Herin we report on 109 soil samples around a new campus within a developing education park, in which the levels, spatial distributions, and possible sources of (alkali, alkaline‐earth, transition, and main group) metals and metalloids (Cd, Cr, As, Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ba, Ni, Ti, Be, Bi, Sb, Sn, Co, V, and Zr) were systematically investigated. The Nemerow pollution indexes, spatial analysis, principal components analysis, and cluster analysis were calculated and analyzed. The results showed that the level of most metals within the campus with different functional areas (college, activity, and greening areas) was 1–1.3‐times as much as that outside in four directions and had greater variations. Moreover, the level of most metals was 1–1.5‐times as much as their background value and they distributed in the areas under specific developments and might mainly be attributed to anthropogenic sources. These findings provide the knowledge about effects of land development and anthropogenic activities on soil metal status that could be used by university/college towns in the similar context around the world.

Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is an important constraint on canola (Brassica napus) production in Canada. Rotations of clubroot-resistant (CR) canola cultivars in various sequences and planting intervals between canola with non-host crops and fallow periods were evaluated to determine their effects on clubroot severity and P. brassicae resting spore populations under field and micro-plot conditions. Under micro-plot conditions, the rotation sequences including CR canola, continuous fallow, and the non-host barley reduced gall weight by 63%–100% and clubroot severity by 34%–100% compared with continuous planting of susceptible canola. No visible clubroot symptoms developed following continuous fallow or the non-host crop. Under field conditions, clubroot severity was very high (78% disease index) in the continuous susceptible canola sequence. Most of the CR canola rotation sequences significantly reduced clubroot severity by 12%–23%, but continuous fallow, continuous barley, and alternating the CR canola cultivars ‘45H29’ or ‘73-47’ with ‘TC72429-10’ reduced clubroot severity by 32%–36%. A comparison of intervals between canola crops and four cropping sequences (continuous susceptible canola, alternating canola with barley or pea, a 2-yr non-host interval between canola crops, and a 3-yr non-host interval between canola crops) was conducted over 5 yr. A 2- or 3-yr non-host interval improved plant height, plant biomass, and seed yield, and reduced gall mass, P. brassicae propagules in the soil, and clubroot severity. A significant yield increase of more than 3600% was observed in a 3-yr non-host interval.

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O), an earth-abundant, low-cost metal-oxide semiconductor, has received enormous attention for its CO2 reduction ability in aqueous media by photochemical, photoelectrochemical and electrochemical methods. An unresolved problem with all of these approaches, however, is the instability of the Cu2O caused by its tendency to undergo an irreversible redox disproportionation reaction. Here, we report a way to circumvent this troublesome behaviour of Cu2O by driving the CO2 reduction in the gas-phase via heterogeneous photocatalytic hydrogenation. To this end, Cu2O nanocubes with surfaces comprising mixed oxidation-state copper Cu(0,I,II) sites, oxygen vacancies [O] and hydroxyl OH groups were synthesized. These surfaces enable heterolysis of H2 and adsorption of CO2 under mild conditions; they facilitate the reverse water–gas shift reaction, while rendering the redox disproportionation reaction reversible. This synergism provides Cu2O nanocubes with high photocatalytic activity and stability. Cu2O is a promising photocatalyst, although its stability is compromised by a disproportionation reaction that leads to the formation of Cu and CuO. Now, a method is reported to stabilize Cu2O nanocubes, rendering them highly active and stable for the photocatalytic reverse water–gas shift reaction.

Zn–air batteries are under revival., Zn–air batteries are under revival. They have large theoretical energy density and potentially very low manufacturing cost compared to the existing Li-ion technology. However, their full potential has not been fulfilled due to challenges associated with air cathodes and Zn anodes. In this minireview, we present the current status and technical hurdles of Zn–air batteries and discuss the possible direction of their future improvements. We show that in contrast to tremendous efforts on the design and development of efficient cathode electrocatalysts over recent years, the pursuit of stable and cyclable Zn anodes is equally important but receives far less attention than deserved. We therefore call for a shift of future research focus from cathode electrocatalysts to Zn anodes in order to make this century old technology a truly commercial reality.

PbSe nanoparticles (PbSe-NPs) attract ever-growing interest owing to their great promise in various fields. However, potential toxic effects of PbSe-NPs on male reproductive systems have not been reported. This study aimed to determine whether early-life exposure to PbSe-NPs could affect male reproductive systems and other related health effects in rats. The male rats were intraperitoneally injected with 10 mg/kg/week PbSe-NPs for 60 days followed by a series of reproductive-related analyses. We found that the nanoparticles could accumulate in testes in a size-dependent manner. Furthermore, accumulation of PbSe-NPs resulted in oxidative stress and disorder of normal serum sex hormones. Endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria-mediated cell apoptosis were triggered via oxidative stress, as shown by upregulation of cytoplasmic Cyt-c, Bax, cleaved Caspase-3, GRP78, and Caspase-12. Notably, PbSe-NP administration led to reduction in the quantity and quality of sperm, which caused a great fertility decrease. In contrast, released Pb2+ from PbSe-NPs did not result in any testis toxicity and fertility declines. These results demonstrate that PbSe-NPs could cause severe reproductive toxicity in a size-dependent manner and these toxic effects should be responsible for PbSe-NPs themselves rather than released Pb2+. The application of PbSe-NPs might be a double-edged sword, and corresponding measures should be taken before use.

Litter inputs are closely related to both forest productivity and nutrient cycling under climate change and local management. This study investigated the effect of litter inputs on litter decomposition, changes in litter chemistry and nitrogen (N) dynamics during eucalyptus leaf litter decomposition. Two parallel in situ litter decomposition experiments were conducted at two sites with high-quality (HQ) and low-quality (LQ) litters in a eucalyptus-dominated forest of southeast Queensland, Australia. At each site, leaf litters with either a single (SL) or double mass load (DL) of litter inputs were decomposed for 15 months. Litter mass loss, chemical composition and N content of decomposing litters were measured seasonally during the decomposition period. The chemical composition of the collected litters was determined by solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The HQ litters decomposed faster than the LQ litter, with a decomposition constant of 0.53 and 0.33 y−1 at the HQ and LQ site, respectively. Litter addition rates had no effect on litter decomposition, changes in chemical composition and N content during decomposition regardless of differences in initial litter quality. The HQ and LQ litters showed the same pattern of chemical changes during decomposition, with an increase in alkyl C and a decrease in di-O-alkyl C and aryl C. The relative intensity of O-aryl C and carboxyl C converged, while the relative intensity of di-O-alkyl C and δ15N diverged as the decomposition progressed. N immobilization during decomposition depended on litter quality, with N consistently immobilized in LQ litters over the whole decomposition period. In subtropical eucalyptus-dominated forests, the dynamics of organic C and N during litter decomposition were resistant to the increased inputs of aboveground litters. Litter chemistry of different initial qualities converged at the early stages of decomposition, and the implications of chemical convergence on the formation and stabilization of soil organic matter need to be assessed in the future.

Understanding environmental fate is a prerequisite for the safe application of nanoparticles. However, the fundamental persistence and environmental transformation of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2, a 2D nanosheet attracting substantial attention in various fields) remain largely unknown. The present work found that the dissolution of SLMoS2 was pH and dissolved oxygen dependent and that alterations in phase composition significantly occur under visible light irradiation. The 1T phase was preferentially oxidized to yield soluble species (MoO42- and SO42-), and the 2H phase remained as a residual. The transformed SLMoS2 exhibited a ribbon-like and multilayered structure and low colloidal stability due to the loss of surface charge. Dissolved oxygen competitively captured the electrons of SLMoS2 to generate superoxide radicals and accelerated the dissolution of nanosheets. Compared to pristine 1T-phase SLMoS2, the transformed 2H-phase SLMoS2 could not easily enter algal cells and induced a low developmental inhibition, oxidative stress, plasmolysis, photosynthetic toxicity and metabolic perturbation. The downregulation of amino acids and upregulation of unsaturated fatty acids contributed to the higher toxicity of 1T-phase SLMoS2. The dissolved ions did not induce apparent phytotoxicity. The connections between environmental transformation (phase change and ion release) and phytotoxicity provide insights into the safe design and evaluation of 2D nanomaterials.

D-amino acid (DAA) an environmentally friendly biofilm inhibitor, has low efficiency for membrane biofouling control due to its instability. To address this challenge, a novel nanocomposite was prepared with DAA adhering to polydopamine (PDA)-coated halloysite nanotube (HNTs) through the interactions of H-bonding and π-π stacking between PDA and DAA. Membrane modified with such nanocomposite was fabricated via blending phase inversion, and the nanocomposite was uniformly distributed in the modified membrane matrix. In comparison with the pristine membrane, the addition of nanocomposites resulted in robust mechanical property for modified membrane with the ultimate stress and strain increased by 23.97% and 35.62%, respectively. Moreover, an excellent tradeoff between water flux (2.5 folds of pristine membrane) and selectivity was achieved, probably due to the improved membrane hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, bovine serum protein (BSA) static adsorption as well as dynamic filtration experiments exhibited excellent antifouling ability of the modified membrane. Most importantly, a superior anti-biofouling stability over a 10-day period was obtained for the membrane modified with nanocomposite, indicating that the activity of DAA to mitigate biofouling was effectively maintained. This study developed a novel and promising strategy for membrane biofouling mitigation.

The Ag/ZnO/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst, which was synthesized by thermal polymerization of a melamine precursor combined with solvothermal reaction, was used as a visible-light-driven biocide toward Escherichia coli (E. coli). The Ag/ZnO/g-C3N4 composite displayed considerably increased visible-light-driven bactericidal activity compared to g-C3N4, Ag/g-C3N4, and ZnO/g-C3N4 powders. The photocatalytic destruction of E. coli cells was verified by fluorescence-based cell live/dead analysis and SEM. The mechanism of increased bactericidal effect was studied by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The enhanced photocatalytic bactericidal effect was attributed to the matching conduction band levels of g-C3N4 and ZnO and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles, which resulted in enhanced adsorption of visible light, reduced recombination of free charges, and rapid separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons-holes. The disinfection mechanism was investigated using different chemical scavengers and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR), and indicating the important role of h+ and H2O2. Furthermore, taking into account the bulk availability and better bactericidal effect of Ag/ZnO/g-C3N4, this work provides a new pathway to develop advanced materials for water disinfection.

The performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) that uses an as-prepared zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as air-cathode catalyst is investigated. Due to the composite pore structure, large specific surface area (1416.19 m2/g), and high pore volume (0.55 cm³/g), the 0.5 mg/cm2 ZIF-8 catalyst can enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in electrodes and achieve a maximum power density of 2103.4 mW/m2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates the abundant existence of pyridinic nitrogen in ZIF-8 that meets the prerequisite for making an effective and efficient catalyst for ORR, and the carbon atoms adjacent to the pyridinic nitrogen are considered as the active sites with Lewis basicity. In addition, the graphitization of carbon in ZIF-8 enhanced the electronic conductivity and corrosion resistance during electrocatalysis. MFCs that use ZIF-8 as the catalyst can regularly work more than 110 h during a feeding period, which is considerably longer than that of the MFCs modified by Pt/C (approximately 40 h). The composite pore structure in ZIF-8 guarantees an rapid mass transfer rate on the three-phase boundary, which results in a faster ORR rate. These advantages make ZIF-8 a promising alternative catalyst for ORR of air-cathode MFC.

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has been a commercial oilseed crop in Canada since the 1920s. The production of soybean rapidly increased from 2004 to 2016 in Alberta and Manitoba. Root rot disease caused by the oomycete genus Pythium was observed from 105 fields in 2015 and 2016 in southern Alberta and Manitoba. In the present study, a total of 97 isolates of Pythium were recovered from the root tissues of soybean seedling collected from those fields. Identification of the Pythium species was achieved by examining their morphological features and sequences analysis of internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and cytochrome oxidase subunit 2 gene (Cox II). Nine species of Pythium were identified, with Pythium violae as the predominant species (27 out of 97, 27.8%), followed by P. intermedium (21), P. irregulare (16), P. sylvaticum (12), P. recalcitrans (8), P. ultimum (8), P. heterothallicum (3), P. conidiophorum (1) and P. macrosporum (1). This is the first report of P. conidiophorum, P. recalcitrans and P. violae on soybean in Canada. All the Pythium isolates except three isolates (S2d of P. violae, S29a and S29b of P. heterothallicum) were highly virulent on soybean, causing root rot disease symptoms.

The quantity and quality of litter inputs to forest soils are likely to be changed as a result of the climate change and human disturbances. However, the effects of changed litter inputs on soil labile carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools still remain unclear. A 15-month in situ field experiment was conducted within both high and low litter quality site in a eucalyptus-dominated native forest of Queensland, Australia. Three rates of litter inputs were applied, including (i) no litter (NL); (ii) single litter (SL), representing the average condition of the surrounding forest floor; and (iii) double litter (DL). Water-extractable organic C (WEOC) and total N (WETN), hot water-extractable organic C (HWEOC) and total N (HWETN), microbial biomass C (MBC), and N (MBN) were analyzed in the 0–5-cm soil layer seasonally. Litter input rates had no significant effects on litter decomposition at both sites (P > 0.05). After 15-month of decomposition, mean litter mass loss was 46.3% and 31.2% at the HQ and LQ sites, respectively. Changed litter quantity had no significant effects on any of the soil labile C and N pools, regardless of litter quality. However, soil labile C and N pools significantly varied with sampling times, and the samples of different sampling times were clearly separated at both sites according to the redundancy analysis (RDA). WEOC peaked in summer, declined in autumn and winter, and increased again in spring, while the concentrations of HWEOC and MBC peaked in the winter period. The seasonal trends of MBN were opposite to the trends of WETN, which might be due to the temporal partitioning of N between plants and microbes. The findings indicated that soil labile C and N pools in the eucalyptus-dominated forest of subtropical Australia were resistant to a short-term change in aboveground litter inputs. Future research should expand on these findings by keeping observing over a longer time period and considering the influence of changed belowground litter inputs.

As an important type of typical synthetic azo dyes, the use of sudan I-IV dyes has been of concern worldwide because of their wide applications and illegal addition into various foodstuffs, potentially resulting in water and soil pollution and having adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. However, to date, little has been reported regarding the environmental levels of these dyes and the risks that they pose to human health and ecosystems. Understanding the responses of soil enzymes, functional groups of bacteria and microbial communities to sudan dyes is of great importance to reveal their effect on the soil environment. In this study, we performed a toxicological study on the specific and overall effects of sudan I-IV dyes on the activity of soil enzymes including catalase, urease, and alkaline phosphatase after a 2- and 7-day exposure, functional groups of soil bacteria including nitrogen-fixing, ammonia-oxidizing, and denitrifying bacteria on day 14, and the structure and diversity of soil microbial community compositions on day 30. The results showed that sudan I-IV affected the activity of the soil enzymes, the abundance of the bacterium functional groups, and the structure and diversity of microbial community compositions, and the effects varied by sudan dyes I-IV, the exposure concentration, and the exposure time.

The rational design of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vastly desirable for advanced renewable energy conversion and storage systems. Tailoring the composition and architecture of electrocatalysts is a reliable approach for improving their catalytic performance. Herein, we developed hierarchical ultra-thin Co nanosheets coupled with N-doped carbon plate (Co-NS@NCP) as an efficient OER catalyst through a feasible and easily scalable NaCl template method. The rapid dissolution-recrystallization-carbonization synthesis process allows Co nanosheets to self-assemble into plenty of secondary building units and to distribute uniformly on N-doped carbon plate. Benefitting from the vertically aligned Co nanosheet arrays and hierarchical architecture, the obtained Co-NS@NCP possess an extremely high specific surface area up to 446.49 m2 g−1, which provides sufficient exposed active sites, excellent structure stability, and multidimensional mass transfer channels. Thus, the Co-NS@NCP affords remarkable electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium with a low overpotential of only 278 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope, as well as robust electrocatalytic stability for long-term electrolysis operation. The present findings here emphasize a rational and promising perspective for designing high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts for the OER process and sustainable energy storage and conversion system.

Soils are a repository for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A pot incubation experiment was performed with four soils (black soil, paddy soil, oasis soil, and fluvo-aquic soil) treated with Aroclor 1242 to achieve PCB concentrations of 5 mg kg−1. The soil enzyme activities of protease, phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, and laccase were determined by spectrophotometry. The soil bacterial communities were investigated using Illumina sequencing analysis. The results showed that the characteristics of the test soils varied among the soil types. The fluvo-aquic soil had the greatest PCB dissipation rate (86.41%), followed by the oasis (79.31%), paddy (56.09%), and black (50.65%) soils. The soil pH, cation exchange capacity, soil organic matter content, and particle diameter played significant roles in PCB dissipation from soils. The soil type had a greater influence than PCB contamination on the soil enzyme activities and bacterial communities (alpha diversity, community structure, and composition). Among the four soils, the bacterial communities of the fluvo-aquic soil were the most susceptible to PCB contamination. However, the bacterial communities of the black soil were not changed by PCB contamination.

Chromium (Cr) is one of the most severe heavy metal contaminants in soil, and it seriously threatens ecosystems and human health through the food chain. It is fundamental to collect toxicity data of Cr before developing soil quality criteria/standards in order to efficiently prevent health risks. In this work, the short-term toxic effects of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on the root growth of eleven terrestrial plants were investigated. The corresponding fifth percentile hazardous concentrations (HC5) by the best fitting species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves based on the tenth percentile effect concentrations (EC10) were determined to be 0.60 and 4.51 mg/kg for Cr (VI) and Cr (III), respectively. Compared to the screening level values worldwide, the HC5 values in this study were higher for Cr(VI) and lower for Cr(III) to some extent. The results provide useful toxicity data for deriving national or local soil quality criteria for trivalent and hexavalent Cr.

Combined toxicity is a critical issue in risk assessment of contaminants. However, very little is known about the joint effects of graphene oxide (GO, a crucial 2-dimensional carbon material) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+, a widespread heavy metal), particularly with respect to the critical period of embryogenesis. In this study, the combined toxicity of GO and Cr6+ was evaluated through embryo-larval toxicity test in Danio rerio (zebrafish). Results indicated that the co-exposure of Cr6+ (1 mg/L) and GO (0.01 mg/L) inhibited hatching and spontaneous movement of embryos, but no significant changes were found in the single Cr6+ or GO group. Compared with the single GO or Cr6+ exposure, their co-exposure (GO+Cr6+) significantly enhanced the teratogenicity in a concentration-dependent pattern, and the spinal curvature was observed as the main deformity. GO+Cr6+ changed the protein secondary structures of embryos result of the generation of ROS and oxidative stress. The degradations of vertical myosepta and cartilages were observed in co-exposure group, suggesting that GO+Cr6+ disrupted the development of musculoskeletal system. The genes col11a1a, col2a1a and postnb were down-regulated but the genes acta1b and mmp9 were up-regulated by GO+Cr6+. The interactions between Cr6+ and GO demonstrated that the morphology, structure, and surface properties of GO were modified by Cr6+. The enhanced defects and O-containing groups of GO could trap more β-sheets, induced oxidative stress, disturbed the development of skeletal muscles and cartilages in zebrafish. These data suggested that GO+Cr6+ enhanced their joint toxicity due to the variation of nanoparticle properties. This finding is important for assessing the ecological risk of graphene family nanomaterials in the natural environment.

Soil is an essential part of our ecosystem and plays a crucial role as a nutrient source, provides habitat for plants and other organisms. Overuse of antibiotics has accelerated the development and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). ARB and ARGs are recognized as emerging environmental contaminants causing soil pollution and serious risks to public health. ARB and ARGs are discharged into soils through several pathways. Application of manure in agriculture is one of the primary sources of ARB and ARGs dissemination in the soil. Different sources of contamination by ARB and ARGs were reviewed and analyzed as well as dissemination mechanisms in the soil. The effects of ARB and ARGs on soil bacterial community were evaluated. Furthermore, the impact of different sources of manure on soil microbial diversity as well as the effect of antibiotics on the development of ARB and ARGs in soils was analyzed. Human health risk assessments associated with the spreading of ARB and ARGs in soils were investigated. Finally, recommendations and mitigation strategies were proposed.

The increasing applications of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2) pose great potential risks associated with environmental exposure. This study found that metallic-phase SLMoS2 with nanoscale (N-1T-SLMoS2, ∼400 nm) and microscale (M-1T-SLMoS2, ∼3.6 μm) diameters at 10-25 mg/L induced significant algal growth inhibition (maximum 72.7 and 74.6%, respectively), plasmolysis, and oxidative damage, but these alterations were recoverable. Nevertheless, membrane permeability, chloroplast damage, and chlorophyll biosynthesis reduction were persistent. By contrast, the growth inhibition (maximum 55.3%) and adverse effects of nano-sized semiconductive-phase SLMoS2 (N-2H-SLMoS2, ∼400 nm) were weak and easily alleviated after 96 h of recovery. N-1T-SLMoS2 (0.011 μg/h) and N-2H-SLMoS2 (0.008 μg/h) were quickly biodegraded to soluble Mo compared with M-1T-SLMoS2 (0.004 μg/h) and excreted by algae. Incomplete biodegradation of SLMoS2 (26.8-43.9%) did not significantly mitigate its toxicity. Proteomics and metabolomics indicated that the downregulation of proteins (50.7-99.2%) related to antioxidants and photosynthesis and inhibition of carbon fixation and carbohydrate metabolism contributed to the persistent phytotoxicity. These findings highlight the roles and mechanisms of the size and phase in the persistent phytotoxicity of SLMoS2, which has potential implications for risk assessment and environmental applications of nanomaterials.

Electroactive biofilm (EAB) sensor had shown great potential in the field of early warning of toxicants in water because of the low-cost and broad-spectrum. However, the traditional calculation of sensitivity strongly relied on the time and concentration gradient which weakened time-efficiency of the sensor. Moreover, the sensitivity could be further improved to respond trace concentrations. Here EAB sensors with different substrate concentrations were formed to respond different concentrations formaldehyde ranging from 1 ppm to 50 ppm and immediate current attenuation (ICA) was induced to evaluate the sensitivity. The ICA (~70 s) exhibited a shorter time than that calculated by calculable sensitivity (CS) and current attenuation (CA), which not only achieved the response of trace concentration but also improved the time-efficiency of the sensor. The EAB formed with 0.1 g/L acetate (EAB-0.1) had a 380% higher sensitivity than that formed with 1.0 g/L acetate (EAB-1.0), leading to a significant electrochemical toxicity response to 1 ppm of formaldehyde. The results of electrochemical response coefficient confirmed that EAB-0.1 was 1.5–6.3 times of that formed with acetate from 0.2 to 1.0 g/L, which was related with microbial community and component of EAB as described in our previous study. Our findings demonstrated that calculation of sensitivity could be optimized to reflect time-efficiency and EAB with limit acetate could be applied in trace toxicant detection.

Manure, soil, and vegetable samples were collected from different-sized livestock farms in Xinxiang, China. The residues of sulfadiazine, sulfamonomethoxine, and sulfamethoxazole were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results indicated that the concentration ranges of the three total sulfonamides in manure, soil, and vegetables were 10.13–566.23 µg kg−1, 7.60–176.26 µg kg−1, and 0–32.70 µg kg−1, respectively. The mean concentrations were 219.71 µg kg−1, 70.73 µg kg−1, and 7.08 µg kg−1 for manure, soil, and vegetables, respectively. The mean concentrations in soil were lower than the ecotoxic effect trigger value (100 µg kg−1), indicating a low risk for organisms in soil. The concentrations of the three sulfonamides varied significantly in different types of vegetables and all were lower than the acceptable daily intake value (50 µg (kg day)−1). However, the potential ecotoxicity and danger to human and animal health via accumulation of the antibiotic in the food chain cannot be ignored.

Predicting the biological responses to engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) is critical to their environmental health assessment. The disturbances of metabolic pathways reflect the global profile of biological responses to ENPs but are difficult to predict due to the highly heterogeneous data from complicated biological systems and various ENP properties. Herein, integrating multiple machine learning models and metabolomics enabled accurate prediction of the disturbance of metabolic pathways induced by 33 ENPs. Screening nine typical properties of ENPs identified type and size as the top features determining the effects on metabolic pathways. Similarity network analysis and decision tree models overcame the highly heterogeneous data sources to visualize and judge the occurrence of metabolic pathways depending on the sorting priority features. The model accuracy was verified by animal experiments and reached 75%-100%, even for the prediction of ENPs outside of databases. The models also predicted metabolic pathway-related histopathology. This work provides an approach for the quick assessment of environmental health risks induced by known and unknown ENPs.

Understanding the roles of the properties of nanomaterials in biological interactions is a key issue in their safe applications, but the surface atomic arrangement, as an important property of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), remains largely unknown. Herein, the interfacial interactions (affinity sites and intensity) between monolayer MoS2 and zebrafish embryos mediated by 1 T phase surface atomic arrangement (octahedral coordination) and the 2H phase surface atomic arrangement (triangular prism coordination) MoS2 nanosheets were studied. 1 T-MoS2 first bound to phosphate and then proteins on the chorion, while the adhesion of 2H-MoS2 occurred in the opposite order. The binding affinity of 2H-MoS2 with embryos was higher than that of 1 T-MoS2, and the former material changed the protein structure from β-sheets to turns and bends and random coils. Compared to 1 T-MoS2, 2H-MoS2 more readily entered embryos, which was facilitated by caveolae-mediated endocytosis, and caused higher developmental toxicity. Furthermore, metabolic pathways related to amino acid and protein biosynthesis and energy metabolism were affected by the nanomaterial surface atomic arrangements. The above results provide insights into the designs, applications and risk assessments of nanomaterials by the surface atomic arrangement regulation.

Application of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanosheets with different phases have attracted much attention in various fields. However, the effects of TMDC phases on environmental biology remain largely unknown. In this study, chemically exfoliated WS2 nanosheets (Ce-WS2, mainly the 1T phase) and annealed exfoliated WS2 nanosheets (Ae-WS2, 2H phase) were fabricated to serve as representative TMDC nanomaterials. Ce-WS2 showed higher levels of cellular uptake, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, membrane damage, and inhibition of photosynthesis than Ae-WS2 in Chlorella vulgaris. These differences were attributed to the higher electron conductivity and higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes in the 1T phase, a typical feature of Ce-WS2. An experimental study on adsorption and desorption behaviors of rhodamine B (RhB) with/without cadmium ion (Cd2+) on a coastal soil was carried out in the face of the scarce studies on its environmental behaviors, especially its combined pollution with metal ions. The implications on mariculture and seafood safety, rarely concerned either, were also analyzed for providing a new insight between azo dyes and them. It showed that the adsorption of RhB on the tested soil was affected by Cd2+ and could be better fitted by the Freundlich model and dominantly identified as chemical adsorption according to the threshold of ΔG0 (40 kJ/mol). There is a positive hysteresis on the desorption of RhB, which was generally strengthened with the increasing concentration of RhB but generally weakened in the presence of Cd2+. The azo dyes including RhB and heavy metals such as Cd, as the major class of typical pollutants in coastal environment, are closely related to the mariculture and seafood safety. In the consideration of three aspects including potential pollutants for the mariculture, potential risks for seafood safety, and potential relationships between dyes and mariculture and seafood safety, their implications were further clarified.

Mitigating membrane fouling extensively occurred in membrane-based water treatment techniques in an efficient and durable way is a pressing challenge. The novel electro-assisted membrane coupling technology showed great potentials for tackling the problem. Foulants like charged natural organic matter, colloids and bacteria can be successfully repelled from membrane surface in the presence of electric field, contributing to less adoption, accumulation, and blocking. More importantly, the inactivation of microorganisms induced by electric field played a significant role in inhibiting the formation of the stubborn biofilm, which showed distinct and excellent advantages over other membrane fouling control approaches like surface hydrophilic modification, chemical cleaning, and pretreatment optimization. This thorough and long-term effective coupling means will actually open a new sight for membrane fouling mitigation fields. Herein, we reviewed the configuration of direct current (DC) membrane coupling technology to control membrane fouling, fouling alleviating mechanisms, and membrane filtration performances of DC electric field membrane coupling process. Additionally, some potential drawbacks and corresponding strategies were also discussed; hopefully to supply some viewpoints for prospective developments in membrane fouling mitigation fields.

The conversion study on the environmental quality criteria between water/air and soil is the need to carry out research on soil-environmental quality standards in an all-round way, and also the demand for solving emerging problems in this field using the system dynamic and the overall view. Carrying out this study is of practical significance and theoretical values in the face of formulation and revision of soil-environmental quality standards in China. Firstly, the theoretical basis and relative models of soil-water and soil-air systems were expounded, respectively. And on this basis, a preliminary conceptual model about the conversion was constructed. After that, the current worldwide environmental quality criteria/standards for soil, water and air media were introduced based on their types, concerned pollutants and hierarchical classification, and their variation were also analyzed briefly. Particularlly, the key points for the conversion of environmental quality criteria between soil and water and/or between soil and air were discussed, respectively, while combined with the relative researching results. Finally, this conversion study was commented and prospected.

Norfloxacin (NFLX) is a synthetic antibiotic widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases. In this work, the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) toward NFLX degradation, electricity production and the antibiotics resistances genes (ARGs) generation was investigated. NFLX degradation efficiency and COD removal reached 65.5% and 94.5% respectively. The increase in NFLX concentration (128 mg/L) had no significant influence on NFLX degradation efficiency, COD removal and MFCs voltage output while the electricity was successfully generated. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) indicated low absolute abundances of ARGs (mdtk, mdtm, and pmra) compared with the traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Anodic bacteria can survive in the presence of high NFLX concentration and sustain its degradation and electricity production. In terms of NFLX degradation, COD removal, diminished ARGs generation and simultaneous energy production, MFC seems to be a promising technology for antibiotics wastewater treatment with a potential to overcome the ARGs challenge.

The increasing production and applications of graphene oxide (GO, a novel carbon nanomaterial) have raised numerous environmental concerns regarding its ecological risks. Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) disperses in water and poses an increasing hazard to the ecosystem and human health. It is critical to study the environmental responses and molecular mechanisms of GO and TPhP together to assess both chemicals; however, this information is lacking. The present work revealed that GO promoted the bioaccumulation of TPhP in zebrafish larvae by 5.0%-24.3%. The TPhP-induced growth inhibition of embryos (malformation, mortality, heartbeat, and spontaneous movement) at environmentally relevant concentrations was significantly amplified by GO, and these results were supported by the downregulated levels of genes and proteins associated with cytoskeletal construction and cartilage and eye development. TPhP induced negligible alterations in the genes or proteins involved in oxidative stress and apoptosis, but those related proteins were all upregulated by GO. GO and TPhP coexposure activated the mTOR signaling pathway and subsequently promoted apoptosis in zebrafish by potentiating the oxidative stress induced by TPhP, presenting synergistic toxicity. These findings highlight the potential risks and specific molecular mechanisms of combining emerging carbon nanomaterials with coexisting organic contaminants.

Previous studies have shown that co-catalysts play a pivotal role for improving both the activity and reliability of semiconductors in photocatalytic hydrogen production, however, designing highly efficient and cost-effective co-catalysts to replace expensive and rare metals is still a big challenge. In this work, DFT (density functional theory) is utilized to guide the application of CoP NWs (nanowires) as an earth-abundant co-catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Metallic 1D CoP NWs is rationally integrated with Zn0.5Cd0.5S solid solution semiconductor for the first time, to induce a remarkably improved photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 12,175.8 μmol h−1 g−1, which is 22 times higher than that of the pristine Zn0.5Cd0.5S. This outstanding activity benefits from the collaborative advantages of excellent metallic conductivity and the rigid 1D nanostructure of CoP NWs. Moreover, the mechanism investigations demonstrate that this excellent activity arises from the strong electronic coupling, favourable band structure, highly efficient charge separation and migration based on the powerful characterizations, such as time-resolved PL decay spectra and photoelectrochemical methodology. This work brings new opportunities to employ 1D co-catalysts on photocatalysts for improving the catalytic activities in hydrogen production from water.

A novel Au-graphene oxide (GO)-Co3O4 hollow sphere (Au/GO-Co3O4) was synthesized and its potential in binding with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and inhibiting their replication was examined in this study. Tetracycline-resistant genes (tetA) with two amplicon lengths were selected as the model ARGs due to its highly detected in the environment. The Au/GO-Co3O4 composite was synthesized using tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) as a mediating proxy. We found that it could bind with tetA and consequently inhibit its replication to a greater extent compared with pure Co3O4 and GO-Co3O4 hybrid. Furthermore, the Au-GO-Co3O4 composite was more efficient in binding with short fragments of tetA-ARGs (S-tetA) than long fragments (L-tetA). The interaction mechanism between the composite and tetA was systematically analyzed using spectra methods (FTIR, Raman, UV–Vis, and fluorimetric spectra), isolated filtrate assays, and gel electrophoresis. It is found that the adsorption of both GO and gold nanoparticles for tetA as well as cleavage effect of cobalt oxide/cobalt ions played a critical role in the capture and damage of tetA. Furthermore, we found that the interaction of both Co3O4 and GO-Co3O4 with tetA was mainly through intercalation mechanism, however, that of Au/GO-Co3O4 with tetA was mainly through groove binding mechanism. These findings in this study throw light on the new approaches for purification of ARGs contaminated water and elimination of antibiotic resistance of ARGs by novel inhibitor.

Single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2) are applied as a hot 2D nanosheet in various fields involving water treatments. Both intentional design and environmental or biological processes induce many nanoholes in SLMoS2. However, the effects of nanoholes on the environmental stability and ecotoxicity of SLMoS2 remain largely unknown. The present work discovered that visible-light irradiation induced nanoholes (diameters, approximately 20 nm) in the plane of SLMoS2, with irregular edges and increased interplanar crystal spacing. The ratios of Mo to S in pristine and transformed SLMoS2 were 0.53 and 0.33, respectively. After 96 h exposure at concentrations from 0.1 to 1 mg/L, the above nanoholes promoted algal division, induced a stress-response hormesis, decreased the generation of •OH, and mitigated the cell shrinkage and wall rupture of Chlorella vulgaris induced by SLMoS2. In terms of stress response, the nanohole-bearing SLMoS2 induced fewer vacuoles and polyphosphate bodies of Chlorella vulgaris than the pristine form. Metabolomic analysis revealed that nanoholes perturbed the metabolisms of energy, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. This work proposes that nanoholes cause obvious effects on the environmental fate and ecotoxicity of SLMoS2 and that the environmental risks of engineered nanomaterials should be reevaluated using nanohole-bearing rather than pristine forms for testing.

Due to the numerous factors (e.g., nanoparticle [NP] properties and experimental conditions) influencing nanotoxicity, it is difficult to identify the priority factors dominating nanotoxicity. Herein, by integrating data from the literature and a random forest model, the priority factors determining reproductive toxicity were successfully screened from highly heterogeneous data. Among 10 factors from more than 18 different NPs, the NP type and the exposure pathway were found to dominantly determine NP accumulation. The reproductive toxicity of various NPs primarily depended on the NP type and the toxicity indicators. Nanoparticles containing major elements (e.g., Zn and Fe) tended to accumulate in rats but induced lower toxicity than NPs containing noble elements. Compared with other exposure pathways, i.p. injection posed significantly higher risks for NP accumulation. By combining similarity network analysis and hierarchical clustering, the sources of highly heterogeneous data were identified, the factor-toxicity dependencies were extracted and visualized, and the prediction of nanotoxicity was then achieved based on the screened priority factors. The present work provides insights for the design of animal experiments and the illustration and prediction of nanotoxicity.
