The distal reach of the Lower Jingjiang River (LJR) in the middle of the Yangtze River consists of five adjacent bends, among which the Qigongling Bend is a Ω-shaped meander with a mean sinuosity of 2.2 and the narrowest neck 525 m in width. This bend is slowly approaching neck cutoff owing to progressive bank erosion. An abnormal phenomenon has occurred in this bend since the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) began to operate in 2003 which is erosion in the inner bank zone and deposition in the outer bank zone. This problem has not been fully understood because of the interplay of changes in water-sediment, bank erosion, and artificial bank revetment. In this study, aerial and remote sensing images, hydrological data, channel topography, and an existing bank erosion model are used to reveal channel morphodynamics of this bend and the trend of the potential neck cutoff induced by bank erosion. The study results show that the clear water released from the TGR has provided by forcefully eroded the point bar of inner bank but failed to scour the outer bank due to the protection of bank revetment since the 1990s. Thus far, the outer bank zone near the bend apex has increasingly widened in conjunction with the formation of 2 emerging sand bars. Consequently, the thalweg of the main channel has laterally shifted toward the inner bank by roughly 800 m. More severely, the rate of bank retreat on the upstream side of the bend neck was about 4.5 m/yr in 2010–2019, but the downstream side of this neck was experienced slight deposition. Bank erosion could be accelerated by progressively increasing erosion and eventually trigger the occurrence of neck cutoff in the next few decades, thereby significantly altering the quasi-equilibrium regime of channel morphodynamics in the LJR.

Sediment deposition is a significant feature of a dynamic floodplain river. As the river's carrying capacity decreases, it is forced to deposit sediment on the river bed. However, due to the construction of some hydraulic structures over the river bed at different times (bridges, dams), the velocity of the river in the floodplain area decreases with accelerating sedimentation process, which hinders water transport. The sub-catchment basin (Nabadwip-Kalyani stretch) of the Bhagirathi–Hooghly river in West Bengal (Ghosh et al. 2020), India is frequently used as a means of water transport by local stakeholders. Because of sedimentation, the thalweg depth of the river is constantly decreasing in Nabadwip–Kalyani stretch and the water transport is being disrupted. Therefore, it is very important to know the function of hydraulic structures over the river bathymetry and resultant sediment flow, transportation, and sediment deposition in this region. Therefore, this article mainly assesses to develop a 1D hydro-dynamic sediment transport model on river morphological change through seasonal quasi-unsteady flow accumulation and sediment budget in a given year (2018). The hydro-dynamic model is calibrated by 1D HEC-RAS v 5.0.7 software (Gibson et al. 2017) based on seasonal quasi-unsteady flow using various empirical equations and Manning's roughness coefficient and validated with R2, NSE, and RSR. The model also examines the role of hydrodynamic structures in scouring and sedimentation due to the location of these structures above the river. This model output will help local stakeholders to understand the amount of sediment in the river and keep river transport viable in all seasons.

The Amvrosiivka Upper Palaeolithic complex, composed of a camp site and nearby bison bone bed is located in the Donetsk oblast’, at the top of the Kazenna ravine, a right tributary of the Krynka river, which drains into the Mius river. The site is dated by an average of 19000—18000 uncal BP and belong to Epigravettian tradition. The results of the long-term research the Amvrosiivka bison bone bed was analyzed in the article. The features of topography (a gully-terrace on board of a ravine), planigraphy, stratigraphy of a bone bed (the ledges-thresholds and some sterile layers in cultural remains distribution), and also the seasons of the kill of animals (alternative, with prevalence of cold) was summarized. Data about the bison bones (Bison priscus, MNI = 650 and bones with cultural modifications) is presented. The prevalence of the hunter projectile weapon details (27 bone points and about 90 flint micropoints-inserts), and also flint tools for butchering animals among the archaeological finds is determined. The interpretation of the bone bed at the same times was controversial: as a refuse dump near dwelling (Evseev), as a resulted from a one-time (Pidoplichko) or repeated (Efimenko) mass drive of bison, or as a ritual locale (Boriskovskij). At present the site is interpreted as a place of numerous mass drive of bison and, mainly, primary butchering of hunting bag, and also, probably, storages of meat products in the form of the frozen carcasses of bison in a cold season (Krotova, Snizhko, Julien). The ethnoarchaeological data about methods of collective kills by Paleoindian and Indian pedestrian hunters on bison of the North America (Frison 2004) for the reconstruction of possible variants of the mass drive of bison in Amvrosiivka is used. The conclusion is made that for the purpose organization of the series of mass drive of bison at different seasons the hunters in Amvrosiivka used a natural trap — the gully-terrace on a board of ravine — the right tributary of a Kazenna ravine. This terrace with one abrupt and rather high (4—5 m) board, obviously, used for a drive of bison from above, a plateau (method of «jump») that the hunters, obviously, at a certain stage having added with the restraining structure (pens) which should keep the escaped and wounded animals. The variant of a possible shelter from below, a thalweg of the Kazenna ravine (an «arroyo trap» method) also is not excluded.

Intermittently open/closed estuaries (IOCE) are wave-dominated estuaries with entrances that temporarily close to the ocean. Wave–current interactions play a major role in estuary entrance morphodynamics and influence the degree of energy transfer from the ocean into the lagoon. This study utilizes artificial entrance openings of multiple ICOE in Victoria, Australia, to capture continuous hydrodynamic and geomorphic data throughout the opening cycle. We illustrate that water level oscillations in the infragravity (IG) band) are present in the basin during open entrance conditions. IG waves were observed to propagate up to 1.8 km upstream of the mouth while the entrance was open. Our work identifies that changes in cross-sectional area, bed depth at the berm position, and offshore wave height control the magnitude of IG waves within the estuary basin. IG wave magnitude is also tidally modulated and increases with high tides when the nearshore water level is higher. Late during the drainage phase, waves were observed to track the margins of the channel, away from the thalweg, and reach the basin. IG wave energy was highest immediately after the basin had ceased draining and while channel dimensions at the mouth were within 10% of their maximum value. As the entrance aggrades, IG wave magnitude decreases in the absence of energetic offshore wave conditions. We relate the changes in IG wave magnitude and frequency to a six-stage conceptual model of the opening–closure sequence. Within the basin, IG wave energy, height and frequency were also consistently highest closer to the mouth and decreased with distance upstream. Our findings indicate that water level oscillations in the IG band are a persistent feature in IOCE and may be the norm rather than the exception in these systems. As IG waves were captured serendipitously as part of a larger field campaign, future work will focus on instrumenting IOCE to gain high-resolution data to quantify IG wave processes during entrance openings. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Namurian (Carboniferous) eustatic fluctuations drove the incision and backfill of shelf‐crossing valley systems located in humid subequatorial regions, which are now preserved in successions of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The infills of these valleys archive the record of palaeoriver systems whose environmental, hydrological and palaeogeographic characteristics remain unclear. A synthesis of sedimentological data from fluvial strata of 18 Namurian incised‐valley fills in the United Kingdom and Ireland is undertaken to elucidate the nature of their formative river systems and to refine regional palaeogeographic reconstructions. Quantitative analyses are performed of facies proportions, of geometries of incised‐valley fills and related architectural elements, and of the thickness of dune‐scale sets of cross‐strata. Reconstruction of the size of the drainage areas that fed these valleys is attempted based on two integrative approaches: flow‐depth estimations from dune‐scale cross‐set thickness statistics and scaling relationships of incised‐valley fill dimensions derived from late‐Quaternary examples. The facies organization of these incised‐valley fills suggests that their formative palaeorivers were perennial and experienced generally low discharge variability, consistent with their climatic context; however, observations of characteristically low variability in cross‐set thickness might reflect rapid flood recession, perhaps in relation to sub‐catchments experiencing seasonal rainfall. Variations in facies characteristics, including inferences of flow regime and cross‐set thickness distributions, might reflect the control of catchment size on river hydrology, the degree to which is considered in light of data from modern rivers. Palaeohydrological reconstructions indicate that depth estimations from cross‐set thickness contrast with observations of barform and channel‐fill thickness, and projected thalweg depths exceed the depth of some valley fills. Limitations in data and interpretations and high bedform preservation are recognized as possible causes. With consideration of uncertainties in the inference of catchment size, the palaeogeography of the valley systems has been tentatively reconstructed by integrating existing provenance and sedimentological data. The approaches illustrated in this work can be replicated to the study of palaeohydrological characteristics and palaeogeographic reconstructions of incised‐valley fills globally and through geological time.

Ephemeral and perennial streams of mountainous catchments in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka and Hong Kong of China were studied for two years on vegetation dynamics. Each year, sampling was conducted during a period when ephemeral streams had low surface flows. Sampling was realized contiguously using belt transects. The standing crop biomass (hereafter biomass) of herbaceous vegetation in ephemeral channels was comparatively lower than perennials and so was the herb diversity. Herb diversity showed a peak from 1.5 to 4.5 m from the centerline/thalweg of ephemeral and perennial streams. Out of 24 herbs, only three were common for both. A peak herb biomass zone was observed in perennials in the same region where diversity peaked. In ephemerals, herb biomass increased laterally up to ∼1.5 m, and was constant thereafter. Seedling experiment results tallied with the field diversity observations of both stream types, and suggested that seed dispersion was the main reason for herb colonization. Furthermore, it showed sapling emergence to be significantly higher in perennials than ephemerals. Return period of annual maximum monthly rainfall was a strong indicator of age of trees in ephemeral streams, and elucidated the possibility of hindcasting past flow episodes. Electrical conductivity was significantly high in ephemeral streams among all the water quality parameters. The contents of the water nutrients were approximately the same in both stream types. While recommending further studies on eco-hydrology of ephemerals, we recognize ephemeral streams to be valuable references in climate change studies due to their responsiveness and representativeness in long term hydrological changes.

A comparative analysis of bedform fields along the submarine flanks of insular volcanoes, characterized by different morpho-structural settings, volcanic and meteo-marine regimes (Vanuatu, Kermadec, Bismark, Madeira and Aeolian archipelagos), is presented here to provide insights on the size distribution, morpho-dynamic and genesis of such bedforms. Two main types of bedforms are recognized according to their size, location and preconditioning/triggering processes. Small-scale bedforms have wavelengths of tens to hundreds of metres and wave heights of metres. Because of their small-size, they are typically not recognizable at water depths greater than 400 m from vessel-mounted bathymetric surveys. Few examples of small-scale bedforms are reported from upper volcanic flanks, where steep gradients commonly hinder their formation. Their recognition is mostly limited to the thalweg of shallow and flat-bottomed channels that carve the insular shelf on slope gradients

Riparian areas provide many ecosystems services to humans that have been utilized for thousands of years and are the main reason why these areas are degraded. Their importance for maintaining biodiversity and stream channel health is even more important in semi-arid and arid region, such as the south-western United States. A common practice to protect riparian areas and streams in the region is the exclusion of human activities with a prime example the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. In this study, we examine if the exclusion of human activities has benefited the Bonita Creek that flows through this conservation area. Cross sections at five locations along Bonita Creek were taken in 1994 and 2013. Based on the comparison of the thalweg depth, the width-depth ratio, the channel erosion/deposition and the floodplain erosion/deposition the stream channel of the two surveys, Bonita Creek appears, in general, to be benefiting from the current exclusion of human activities. Still recovery rates are not very fast indicating landscape and ecosystem-based approaches should be adopted for more effective and sustainable conservation of the area.

Drifting post yolk-sac (PYS) lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens larvae were believed to seek refuge in substrate during daytime although there were no data to support this theory. There is growing scientific literature on important habitat, such as for adults and where eggs are spawned and hatch, however a gap remains in understanding duration of drift for PYS larvae, especially during daytime. This study was undertaken to find drifting PYS lake sturgeon larvae during the day in the Sturgeon River, Michigan, a clear yet tannin-rich river with a well-studied self-sustaining population. River substrates were mapped, and light, velocity, and depth data gathered to describe ‘believed’ refuge for larvae during daylight. From 2013 through 2016 nighttime drift samples (n = 463) for PYS lake sturgeon larvae were complemented with 143 daytime kick net samples and 43 daytime drift sets. No drifting larvae were collected in the daytime kick nets covering a variety of substrate types while over 1,600 PYS larvae were captured in drift nets at night, and 34 were captured in daytime drift sets. These 34 PYS larvae were in the previously unsampled thalweg in ~5% of surface light and at velocities of 0.24 to 0.57 m/s. Data suggest that drifting PYS lake sturgeon larvae do not stop and seek refuge during daylight but rather drift quickly and continuously downstream until suitable habitat is encountered. Measures of light, depth, velocity and thalweg presence combined with LiDar and Sonar mapping will be critical to understanding river suitability and restoration success for this species.

Channel junctions and lateral intakes are always caused turbulence in the passing flow. In this research, an experimental study was carried out to explore a possible method for sediment control for a series of skimming walls and a single spur dike, simultaneously. In order to direct the flow into the diversion channel and increase the skimming wall function, a single spur dike was utilized at the opposite side of the intake channel. The flow patterns for three conditions, including (1) without structures, (2) with skimming wall and (3) skimming wall and spur dike, are considered. The results showed that the use of skimming wall and a combination of skimming wall and spur dike makes it possible to direct the thalweg toward the intake port. In addition, by using the skimming wall, a trench is made toward the intake, which in turn increases the impoundment efficiency by 81% in the skimming wall combined with spur dike and up to about 66% for using the skimming wall.

International audience; The morphology and present-day sediment distribution of the Zambezi turbidite system was investigated using new bathymetric and sub-bottom profiler data as part of the PAMELA research project. The Zambezi turbidite system is composed of two depositional systems: a channelized fan (the Zambezi Fan) and a semi-confined fan (in the Intermediate Basin). The Zambezi Fan includes the Zambezi Valley, which is deeply incised in the Mozambique Channel and is more than three times as large and deep as the great Tanzanian and North Atlantic Mid-Ocean channels. The erosion in the Zambezi Valley is evidenced by its V-shaped morphology and the existence of a U-shaped thalweg affected by several generations of incisions. Based on echo facies and cores from literature, sediments of the Zambezi Fan are dominantly coarse-grained and fine-grained overbank deposits are infrequent. The distal portion of the Zambezi Fan is a main depositional area where typical transparent wedged-shape seismic bodies are interpreted as terminal lobes. Seismic facies in the Intermediate Basin are thought to represent mostly fine-grained turbidites intercalated with infrequent coarse-grained sheet-like turbidites. Hydrodynamic circulation (from surface eddies to the deep circulation of NADW) appears to have a great impact on the Mozambique Channel sedimentation and is suggested (1) to be involved in the delivery of the Zambezi River sediments along the Mozambique margin, (2) to entrain the upper suspended load of turbidity currents, contributing to the absence of fine-grained sedimentation and (3) to contribute to the erosion of the valley flanks leading to the exceptionally great dimensions of the valley

Adjustments of upstream river regimes are one of the main factors affecting downstream fluvial processes. However, not all adjustments of river regimes will propagate downstream. There are some distinctive river reaches where upstream and downstream adjustments have no relevance. However, the irrelevance is neither caused by different river types nor by the different conditions of water and sediment; but rather, the channel boundaries and riverbed morphologies block the propagation effect. These are referred to here as the barrier river reach phenomena. The migration of the thalweg line is the essential reason for causing the propagation effect. Numerous influencing factors for thalweg migration exist, including 1) the average flow rate above the critical bankfull discharge, the average flow rate below the critical bankfull discharge, and their ratio, 2) the ratio of the duration of the aforementioned two periods, 3) the thalweg displacement at the entrance of the river reach, 4) the deflecting flow intensity of the node, 5) the ratio of the river width to water depth, 6) the relative width of the floodplain, and 7) the Shields number. In this study, the correlativity between the measured distances and the restricting indicators of thalweg migration in the Middle Yangtze River over the years was established. The barrier degree of 27 singlethread river reaches was subsequently assessed. These reaches included 4 barrier river reaches; 5 transitional reaches transforming from barrier to non-barrier; 10 transitional reaches transforming from non-barrier to barrier; and 8 non-barrier river reaches. Barrier river reaches were found to be important for maintaining the stability of the river regime and the transverse equilibrium of sediment transport in the downstream reaches. To some extent, the barrier river reaches may protect the natural dynamical properties from being destroyed by artificial river regulation works. Thus, they are of great significance for river management.

Our understanding of ecosystem responses to exceedingly large rare flood events is currently limited. We report the resilience of aquatic community to a 100-year record-high flood, and how it varies depending on levels of water pollution, in a fourth-order gravel-bed river in northern Japan. We used data on riparian landscape structure, channel morphology, and community structure of aquatic fauna, which were collected in sites with and without effluent before (1 month–3 years) and after (10 months) the flood. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of consumers and basal resources were measured only before (1 year) the flood. We observed aquatic food web with introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as the top predator, with variable relative contributions of basal resources and their pathways to the rainbow trout, under the effects of water pollution. Biofilm-originating dietary carbon became the more dominant resource, with a slightly shorter food-chain length in the polluted sites. The flood led to a loss of riparian forest and a substantial increase in the proportion of exposed gravel bars (5–24%). While the average river-bed elevation changed a little, the localized scours of river bed down to > 2 m were observed with lateral shifts of channel thalweg. Despite the landscape-level physical and structural changes of ecosystem, aquatic community showed a remarkably high resilience exhibiting negligible changes in abundance, except in the polluted site where only fish abundance showed a slight decrease. This study suggests that the abundance of aquatic organisms in gravel-bed rivers is resilient to a flood of unprecedented magnitude in recent history.

The Madeira River thalweg includes two pool-to-pool spacing periods. First, standard pool-crossing sequences form 6 to 8 m deep pools. These pool-crossing sequences recur approximately every six channel widths (9.7 km or 6.8 W), on average. However, the Madeira study reach (between Manicore and Porto Velho in Northern Brazil) is relatively straight, making these pools more frequent than meanders. Second, much deeper pools (13 to 30 m deep) also form at relatively regular, but much longer spacing (50–60 km, about 40 channel widths apart). The deeper “mega-pools” occur where the river reaches the edge of the Holocene alluvium, encountering resistant units (e.g., granite, mud clasts, and conglomerates) in the confining Pleistocene units. These two pool scales also occur on the Lower Mississippi River (downstream of Tarbert Landing). This study identified pool formation processes responsible for these two pool-depth and –spacing scales on two large sand-bed rivers. The analyses computed pool statistics and correlated the deepest pools with planform controls. Two distinct pool formation hypotheses explain the two pool types. The standard pools are “rhythmic” features, developed by macro-turbulent feedbacks, while the mega-pools are “forced” features imposed by the regional geology. The former are fundamentally periodic; the latter are not. However, periodogram analysis indicates that mega-pools on the Madeira form a second, relatively regular pool period. The regional geology, including the confining Pleistocene bluffs and, potentially, orthogonal neotectonic lineaments, imposed periodic regularity to these mega-pools on the Madeira River that is not observed on the Mississippi River, a comparably-sized sand-bed river with mega-pools.

The continental slope of Madagascar is underrepresented in the literature in comparison to other continental slopes worldwide. In particular, the submarine geomorphology of this zone has not been discussed in detail. During research cruise SO230 approximately 1900 km2 of high resolution multibeam bathymetric data were collected along the northwest continental slope of Madagascar. These data show four, previously unrecognised, submarine canyons extending to the toe of the continental slope in the eastern Mozambique Channel. Measured canyon thalweg lengths vary from 40 to 51 km and exhibit straight to sinuous paths. The thalweg profiles include concave, linear and slightly convex characteristics. Canyon relief decreases with depth downslope, while canyon width increases. The interfluves of the upper canyon reaches are dominated by large, square to rectangular, block-like features of 100–200 m vertical relief. These features decrease in prominence down slope. Canyons mark the coast-perpendicular flank of the blocks, while the coast-parallel block flanks are delineated by elongate valleys. The geomorphology of the canyons is best explained by varied stages (youthful to mature) of canyon evolution. The discovery of these canyons highlights the complexity of the Madagascan Continental slope, and the future potential for multidisciplinary research in this region.

Mouth bars are important morphological units in deltaic and estuarine systems, which have encountered with significant topography variations driven by anthropogenic interferences and natural forcings. On the basis of seven selected maritime charts covering from 1960s to 2016, we focus on the morphological evolution of mouth bar with bifurcating channels in the Modaomen Estuary, the main fluvially-dominated estuary of the Pearl River Delta. The bar area is relatively in equilibrium with barely aggregation and degradation before 1990 while overall erosion was found thereafter. Sediment volume of the mouth bar between the −2 m and −7 m isobaths drastically decreased after 1990s. Correspondingly, the area of −4 m isobaths of the bar stepwise decreased from about 18 × 106 m2 to 2 × 106 m2, indicating the body of mouth bar above −4 m almost disappeared. The two side channels also suffered significantly morphological evolution. The West Channel (WC) was subjected to uninterrupted erosion. Especially during 2000–2005, the WC below the −2 m isobath experienced remarkable erosion with the increment of water volume reaching 6.7 × 106 m3. The East Channel (EC) had the potential to expand seaward between 2000 and 2011 yet encountered with accumulation after 2011. Meanwhile, the thalweg of the EC seemed hard to distinguish and the WC displayed more meandering thalweg. Furthermore, Empirical Orthogonal Function was applied to quantify the bathymetric changes with independent modes. The temporal variations of fluvial sediment input displayed significant decreasing trend at MK from 1960 to 2014, which presented a statistically significant relationship with the third mode. However, it only accounts for 13.4% of the overall evolution patterns. Although the remarkable reduction of sediment input generally associates with the degradation in bar area, the sediment load is probably not the primary mechanisms driving morphological changes in the Modaomen Estuary. Anthropogenic interferences including large-scale reclamation and intensive sand excavation should be responsible for the morphological changes.

Metal(loid)s in the reservoir sediment tend to be released into the water column when encountering disturbances and thus pose threats to the aquatic system. In this study, sediment and pore water samples collected from eight cross sections in the Biliu River Reservoir (Dalian, China) were analyzed to determine the spatial distributions of six metal(loid)s and their associations with reservoir morphometry and hydrodynamics. The results show that total metal concentrations of the sediments are higher at the sites with greater water depths and are influenced by the reservoir morphometry. Mn is of great concern with respect to its increasing total concentration from the upstream sites to the dam sites. According to the improved BCR sequential extraction procedure, the acid-soluble fraction of Mn increases along the thalweg to the dam, implying the soluble Mn2+ in the upstream hypolimnion, and sediment is possible to be transported longitudinally by water currents. For Fe, Mn, Pb, Cu, and Zn, the reducible fraction accounts for more than 15% of the total metal concentration, which suggests that Fe–Mn (hydr)oxides could be important in scavenging these metals. High Mn concentrations in pore waters close to the dam, with an average value of more than 40 mg/L, give rise to significant Mn diffusive flux up to 296.1 mg/m2/day.

The 2011 flood, an approximately 500-yr flood on the Missouri River, built many large sandbars that have since been modified by eolian and fluvial processes. The ‘59-mile’ segment of the Missouri National Recreational River, located between Yankton, South Dakota and Ponca, Nebraska, USA is a relatively free-flowing stretch of the river downstream of a major dam which has drastically reduced sediment loads since 1955. Critical sandbar habitat has gradually declined on this stretch of the river, presenting challenges to river management. Satellite and LiDAR imagery was used to measure changes in area, volume, and surface characteristics of sandbars over three years since the 2011 flood. The Portable in situ Wind Erosion Lab (PI-SWERL) was used to measure the potential for bare sandbars to emit dust. Our results suggest that eolian processes are important in the early evolution of sandbars, as the wind modifies the surface into dunes and gravel lags. Furthermore, sandbars are important local sources of dust until gravel lags stabilize the surface, limiting further eolian deflation. The lowering of sandbar surfaces by wind erosion makes them more susceptible to being overtopped by high water events. Fluvial erosion along the margins of the sandbars ultimately reduces their area over time. Vegetation growth further stabilizes sandbar surfaces. The rate of eolian and fluvial erosion ultimately depends on the position of the sandbars relative to the thalweg as well as wind direction. New sandbars are rarely built by fluvial processes on a regulated river like the Missouri, and are in a constant state of erosion and modification, ultimately limiting their longevity as quality habitat.

Deposits in dam areas of large reservoirs, which are commonly composed of fine-grained sediment, are important for reservoir operation. Since the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the sedimentation pattern in the dam area has been unexpected. An integrated dynamic model for fine-grained sediment, which consists of both sediment transport with water flow and gravity-driven fluid mud at the bottom, was proposed. The incipient motion driven by gravity in the form of fluid mud was determined by the critical slope. Shallow flow equations were simplified to simulate the gravity-driven mass transport. The gravity-driven flow model was combined with a 3D Reynolds-averaged water flow and sediment transport model. Solution routines were developed for both models, which were then used to simulate the integral movement of the fine-grained sediment. The simulated sedimentation pattern agreed well with observations in the dam area of the TGR. Most of the deposits were found at the bottom of the main channel, whereas only a few deposits remained on the bank slopes. Due to the gravity-driven flow of fluid mud, the deposits that gathered in the deep channel formed a nearly horizontal surface. By considering the gravity-driven flow, the averaged error of deposition thickness along the thalweg decreased from −13.9 to 2.2 m. This study improved our understanding of the mechanisms of fine-grained sediment transport in large reservoirs and can be used to optimize dam operations.

Hydrochemical and geophysical data collected during a hydrological survey in September 2017, reveal patterns of small-scale hydrological connectivity in a small water track catchment in the north-European Arctic. The stable isotopic composition of water in different compartments was used as a tracer of hydrological processes and connectivity at the water track catchment scale. Elevated tundra patches underlain by sandy loams were disconnected from the stream and stored precipitation water from previous months in saturated soil horizons with low hydraulic conductivity. At the catchment surface and in the water track thalweg, some circular hollows, from 0.2 to 0.4 m in diameter, acted as evaporative basins with low deuterium excess (d-excess) values, from 2‰ to 4‰. Observed evaporative loss suggests that these hollows were disconnected from the surface and shallow subsurface runoff. Other hollows were connected to shallow subsurface runoff, yielding d-excess values between 12‰ and 14‰, close to summer precipitation. ‘Connected’ hollows yielded a 50% higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content, 17.5 ± 5.3 mg/L, than the ‘disconnected’ hollows, 11.8 ± 1.7 mg/L. Permafrost distribution across the landscape is continuous but highly variable. Open taliks exist under fens and hummocky depressions, as revealed by electric resistivity tomography surveys. Isotopic evidence supports upward subpermafrost groundwater migration through open taliks under water tracks and fens/bogs/depressions and its supply to streams via shallow subsurface compartment. Temporal variability of isotopic composition and DOC in water track and a major river system, the Vorkuta River, evidence the widespread occurrence of the described processes in the large river basin. Water tracks effectively drain the tundra terrain and maintain xeric vegetation over the elevated intertrack tundra patches.

Concern has been expressed regarding the impacts of climate change on river ice and ice jam formation in cold regions. Ice jams are easily initiated in bends and narrow channels and cause disasters. In this study, observations and remote sensing monitoring are used to study the freeze-up ice jam formation of bends. Sediment transport and freezing process of the river interact, influencing bed changes profile and sedimentary budget. River ice processes, channel evolution, ice hydro-thermodynamics, and ice jam accumulation are explored. The results show that the channel topography determines the river thalweg, and that the channel elevation interacts with the river ice through sediment transport. The channel shrinkage increases the probability of ice jam, and the sharp bend is prone to ice jam formation. Under the effect of secondary circulation flow in the bend and in the outer bank, the juxtaposed freeze-up and the hummocky ice cover occur in the same location, and frazil ice accumulates under the junction of the main channel and the shoals. Affected by the increase of the hydraulic slope and the velocity downstream, open water reaches develops downstream of the ice accumulation. An open water section is emerged upstream of the bend, due to the ice deposition, and partly cut-off supply of the frazil.

The progressive and sequential shifting of the banklines and centerlines (thalweg) due to bank erosion and channel bar formation, as well as channel planform changes and avulsion of the Dwarkeswar river of West Bengal during the last 100 years, have been studied. For this purpose, police station maps, Survey of India topographical maps, and satellite images were used along with extensive field surveys. The channel was divided into reaches and segments for measuring the amount of migration and quantifying planform indices. Four types of changes have been observed: (1) channel planform change due to meander development and migration, (2) avulsion and consequent alteration in the flow direction, (3) thalweg shifting as a consequence of mid-channel bar formation, and (4) widening of the channel due to bank erosion. The study reveals that the alluvial plain upper (APU) is the most dynamic reach due to the meandering nature of the river. The thalweg shifted up to 1.71 km in this reach. An avulsion occurred in the lower course of the river during a large flood in 1978. The Jhumjhumi Nala became the main course of the river, and the earlier channel had become completely abandoned due to this avulsion. The sinuosity index of the entire study reach has been increasing since 1920, whereas the braiding index has decreased at most of the segments. Therefore, the channel planform is transforming into the meandering pattern from the braided pattern.

International audience; Over the last two centuries, rivers have been strongly regulated, inducing notable sediment starvation and flow reduction. This regulation has altered aquatic habitats, biocenosis and ecosystem services. Gravel augmentation (GA) is increasingly promoted to restore bedload transport, rejuvenate bed sediments and diversify aquatic and riverine habitats. However, practical questions remain in terms of efficiency and sustainability. The objective of this study is to provide unprecedented feedback from three GA experiments conducted along the Rhine River downstream of the Kembs dam (France/Germany). The restored sites were monitored over periods of 1 to 7 years and the stockpile deposits (SDs) and channel responses were compared to highlight the strengths and limitations of such experiments. The monitoring was based on topo-bathymetry, bedload tracking and grain size surveys. Two-dimensional hydraulic modelling was also performed to link the SD erosion patterns to the critical flow conditions. We show that (i) SD erosion is dependent on the grain size of the introduced sediments and the local flow velocities, (ii) sediment dispersion occurred mostly along the thalweg and increased over time, with a progressive decrease in the virtual velocities, (iii) bathymetric simplification and bed grain size fining were observed when downstream sediment diffusion began, (iv) in the mid-term (~5 years), local channel diversification occurred due to the fragmentation of sediment waves, with deposition occurring preferentially on riffles, and (v) new sediment starvation conditions appeared when the sediment waves travelled downstream in the absence of an upstream sediment supply. These results allow us to propose operational recommendations and management scenarios to improve both the efficiency and the sustainability of GAs conducted in large regulated rivers.

Low rates of lateral migration (centimetres to decimetres per year) combined with relatively high rates of vertical accretion (millimetres to centimetres per year) recorded in microtidal channels of the Venice Lagoon (Italy) give rise to point‐bar geometries and internal facies arrangements that differ substantially from widely accepted models of point‐bar sedimentary architecture. In this study, field data from the Venice Lagoon are combined with a three‐dimensional forward stratigraphic model, the ‘Point‐Bar Sedimentary Architecture Numerical Deduction’ (PB‐SAND), to predict the stratal geometries of point bars formed in aggradational settings. The PB‐SAND uses a combined geometric and stochastic modelling approach that can be constrained by field evidence. The model applied determines the geometry of four point bars generated by 9 to 11 m wide channels cutting through salt marshes. An iterative best‐fit modelling approach has been used to obtain multiple simulations for each case‐study, each of which fits the observations derived from the analysis of time‐series historical aerial photographs and 44 sedimentary cores. Results demonstrate how the geometry of the bars is determined by the development of two key stratal surfaces: the point‐bar brink and channel‐thalweg surfaces. These surfaces are defined by the progressive translation and vertical shift of the point‐bar brink (i.e. break of slope between bar top and bar slope) and the channel thalweg (i.e. deepest part of the channel) during bar evolution. The approach is used to: (i) reconstruct three‐dimensional point‐bar geometries; (ii) propose alternative reconstructions; (iii) provide insight to drive the acquisition of additional data to better constrain the proposed models; and (iv) provide insight into the mechanism of bar growth for slowly migrating channels in settings subject to relatively high rates of aggradation. This study highlights how interaction between styles of planform transformation and latero‐vertical shifts of meandering channels can determine the geometry of related sedimentary bodies.

Sediment transport, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen were evaluated during six consecutive water years (2013–2018) of drawdowns of a flood control reservoir in the upper Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA. The drawdowns were conducted to allow volitional passage of endangered juvenile chinook salmon through the dam's regulating outlets by lowering the reservoir elevation to a point where the historical streambed was exposed and transported water and sediment through the reservoir dam. Sediment loads during the drawdown were highest in the first year of monitoring, with a computed value of 40,200 metric tons over a 5-day drawdown, followed by 5 years of lower sediment loads and lower sediment transport rates, suggesting that much of the stored sediment within the reservoir thalweg was transported out of the reservoir in the early years of the consecutive drawdowns. Suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) computed using turbidity and streamflow data resulted in maximum SSC at the onset of the drawdowns, with the highest computed values occurring during the water year 2017 drawdown at 17,500 mg/L (turbidity = 2,990 FNU), and average drawdown SSC values ranging from 654 to 3,950 mg/L for the six years of monitoring. Computed SSC were on the lower range of concentrations that could be harmful to out-migrating juvenile salmon published in other studies. High amounts of particulate organic matter and sand-sized material in drawdown SSC samples affected relations between turbidity and SSC, requiring the use of multiple surrogate regression models over short time frames. Dissolved oxygen minimum values were recorded in two of the monitoring years, with a minimum value of 0.71 and 3.4 mg/L recorded at the onset of the drawdowns in water years 2016 and 2018, respectively. Dissolved oxygen values below 4 mg/L lasted for 1 h, suggesting a rapidly expressed chemical oxygen demand. The response of suspended sediment loads and SSC highlight the site-specific nature of reservoir drawdowns, and the need for evaluation of expected sediment responses for drawdowns being considered at other locations.

Submarine canyons are the major channels for the migration of terrigenous sediments towards deep seas and an important geomorphological unit in continental shelves/slopes. With the development of multibeam bathymetry technology, a method of quickly identifying and accurately extracting the characteristics of submarine canyons from large datasets is urgently required. In this paper, under manual supervision, based on the principles of hydrological analysis and slope analysis, we established a method to quickly identify and extract the characteristic elements of submarine canyons from digital elevation model (DEM) data via the data modeling tools in ArcGIS, according to the topographic features such as U and V shaped downcutting at the bottom of the submarine canyon and high-relief steep canyon walls. The analytical results of the Shenhu Canyons in the northern slope of the South China Sea show that this method can rapidly determine the development position and characteristic elements of submarine canyons and obtain the canyon head and mouth water depth, canyon thalweg length and canyon range (area of canyon floor). To obtain the optimal parameter set applicable to the study area, the factors affecting canyon identification, such as the canyon morphology, reclassification threshold and data resolution, are discussed and analyzed. The results show that the canyon morphology has little influence on the accuracy of recognition results for straight, parallel or sub-parallel canyons. The reclassification threshold of the zero flow accumulation and the spatial resolution of the DEM data determine the accuracy of canyon thalweg recognition, which are two important factors affecting the accuracy of canyon identification results. For the Shenhu Canyons area, a spatial resolution of 200 m and reclassification threshold of 0.4 are the optimal parameters for identifying and extracting features from submarine canyons, and the identification results of automatic and manual extraction of canyon parameters show that the heads water depth differences all are less than 210 m and the thalwegs length difference of the canyon are within 7 km.

Gaoping Submarine Canyon (GPSC) off southwestern Taiwan is a high energy canyon connected to a small mountain river with extremely high sediment load (∼10 kt km–2 y–1). Due to heavy seasonal precipitation (>3,000 mm y–1) and high tectonic activity in the region, the GPSC is known for active sediment transport processes and associated submarine geohazards (e.g., submarine cable breaks). More importantly, strong internal tides have been recorded in the GPSC to drive head-ward, bottom-intensified currents, which result in sediment erosion and resuspension in response to the tidal cycles. To understand the effects of extreme physical conditions on marine nematodes, we sampled the surface sediments along the thalweg of upper GPSC and adjacent slope (200–1,100 m) using a multicorer in the summer and fall of 2015. We found that the nematode species, functional, trophic diversity and maturity dropped significantly in the GPSC as compared with slope communities, but the nematode abundances were not affected by the adverse conditions in the canyon. The non-selective deposit-feeding, fast colonizing nematodes (e.g., Sabatieria, Daptonema, Axonolaimus, and Metadesmolaimus) dominated the canyon seafloor. In contrast, other species of non-selective deposit feeders (Setosabatieria and Elzalia), epigrowth feeders (Craspodema), omnivores/predators (Paramesacanthion), and other species constituted the diverse nematode assemblages on the slope. We found that the strong bottom currents in the GPSC may depress the local nematode diversity by removing the organic-rich, fine-grained sediments; therefore, only the resilient or fast recovering nematode species could survive and prevail. The high species turnover with depth and between the canyon and slope habitats demonstrates that strong environmental filtering processes were the primary mechanism shaping the nematode community assembly off SW Taiwan. Between the canyon and slope, a considerable contribution of nestedness pattern also indicates some degree of local extinction and dispersal limitation in the dynamic GPSC.

International audience; The Capbreton submarine canyon is a striking feature of the south-east of the Bay of Biscay. This canyon forms a deep incision through the continental shelf and slope, and displays remarkable structures linked to its present-day hydrosedimentary activity. Its head has been disconnected from the Adour River since 1310 CE, but remains close enough to the coast to be supplied with sediment by longshore drift. Gravity processes in the canyon body are abundantly described and documented, but activity in the head and the fan of the canyon is poorly constrained. Furthermore, many questions remain regarding the details of processes affecting the head, the body and the fan of the Capbreton canyon. In this work, we address the paucity of documentation concerning (1) the temporal evolution of sediment transfer between the head and the deep reaches of the canyon, and (2) the interaction between gravity processes and the morphology of the canyon floor, including both shaping and feedback mechanisms.This study is based on the analysis and comparison of eight multibeam bathymetric surveys acquired in the upper part of the Capbreton canyon between 1998 and 2018, in depths ranging 10–320 m below sea level. This rare time series exposes the morphological evolution of this outstanding dynamic area over the last 20 years. Our work shows that much of the changes are located in the canyon floor and head. Following a period characterized by a unique flat floor thalweg, the canyon was affected by an incision with low lateral terraces which resulted in a narrow axial thalweg. The deepening of the narrow thalweg was induced by retrogressive erosion according to the presence of upstream-migrating knickpoints, while low elevation residual terraces formed as the canyon reached a local equilibrium profile.The flat thalweg observed in 1998 is likely a result of a partial filling of the canyon thalweg by a substantial emptying of the canyon head and significant mass transfer to the proximal part of the canyon. A flat floor thalweg was not observed again in the remaining of our time series (since 2010), suggesting a possible quieter working mode of the canyon. We also propose the first accurate volume quantification of sediment displacement on the canyon floor. Our findings underline the alternation of filling and erosive periods in the canyon axis and an unexpected continuous sediment deposition in the canyon head during the last 20 years.

This study characterized vertical one-dimensional (1-D) flux rates in the top 150 cm of the streambed and explored the relationship between stage and 1-D vertical flux rates in a low-gradient stream. Six multi-level samplers were installed along a 25 m stretch of the thalweg spaced at 5 m intervals. Each sampler recorded temperature at five separate depths (30, 60, 90, and 150 cm) from February 2009 to March 2010. Temperature and stage data were collected at 15 min intervals. For the midpoint between sensors, 1-D flux rates were calculated using the 1-D conduction-advection-dispersion equation utilized in the VFLUX MATLAB program. The dominant flux direction at a depth of 15 cm was downward (negative), while the average flux directions at depths of 45, 75, and 120 cm were upward (positive). Variable flux directions above 15 cm indicated hyporheic exchange with background upwelling groundwater between 15 to 120 cm. Flux rates approach zero in the summer, representing limited hyporheic exchange. Relationships between stage and flux at the near-surface streambed (15 cm) were weak, but statistically significant, with Spearman&rsquo, s rank correlations for all six multi-level samplers ranging from &minus, 0.032 to 0.369 with an average of 0.085.

s Contour currents are ubiquitous in global oceans, the role of which in shaping submarine morphology and controlling deep-water sedimentary processes has long been underestimated. This study uses 3D seismic and piston-core data to investigate the seismic geomorphology and lithofacies within the upper segment of the Pearl River Canyon (PRC), northern South China Sea, to better understand the mixed sedimentary processes within the submarine canyons. Within the upper segment of the PRC, various morphosedimentary features are recognized according to their seismic expressions in map and section views, including gravity flow-dominated (slope failures, turbidity channels and gullies) and contour current-dominated features (contourite drifts, contourite channels, contourite terrace, and sediment waves). The piston cores contain abundant shelf-derived coarse sediments within several contourite intervals, implying that the contourites were very likely sourced from pre-existing gravity-flow deposits. AMS 14C dating results further indicate that the contourites were mostly deposited during and after the last glacial maximum (LGM), suggesting active gravity flows during the same period. Silt-free sandy contourites are preferentially observed at the canyon thalweg, which may be related to intense contour currents. All the above evidence implies that the study area was influenced by mixed sedimentary processes, including gravity flows and vigorous contour currents. Further analyses suggest that the South China Sea Branch of Kuroshio (SCSBK) and Intermediate Water Current (IWC) greatly influenced the late Quaternary sedimentary processes within the PRC. Specifically, the SCSBK was responsible for the formation of the upper-slope contourites and associated contourite channels near the shelf edge. The SCSBK also promoted the occurrence of upper slope failures and gravity flows when the sea level was much higher than the shelf edge, and contributed to the LGM and post-LGM gravity-flow deposits. In contrast, the IWC was responsible for the formation of contourite drifts along the southwestern flank of the PRC. The IWC intensified when flowing along the canyon thalweg and fault scar, contributing to the formation of contourite channel. Under the influence of winnowing processes from the intense IWC, silt-free medium sands are exposed at the canyon thalweg. The mixed sedimentary processes that are highlighted in this study may have been a potentially underestimated mechanism in explaining the formation of high-quality deep-water sands within submarine canyons.

Sediment supply and sea level interact to control sediment flux to deep-water submarine fans. Although some fans continue to be active during times of rising sea level, the source of sediment is not always clear and may be dominated by reworking in high energy coastal areas rather than reflecting erosional signals directly from the source drainage basin. We present new age and geochemical provenance data from cores covering the last ~20 ka that show continuous deep-water sedimentation through the Indus submarine canyon since at least ~11 ka, despite the cessation of sedimentation on the upper fan around that time. Large turbidity flows mantled terraces >200 m above the thalweg throughout the Holocene and their deposits show trends in grain size and geochemistry that we interpret to record direct supply from the river mouth and little reworking of older deposits eroded by longshore currents, storm waves, slumping, or sliding, at least at 4.7–9.0 ka. We use Nd–Sr isotope compositions to show that sediments within the canyon and in the shelf clinoform to the east of the canyon are similar to the Holocene river mouth, suggesting direct supply from the Indus River to the eastern clinoform and into the canyon. The sediment storage time on the shelf before redeposition would be no more than ~8 k.y., and likely much less during the Early-Mid Holocene (4.7–9.0 ka). Sr–Nd isotopes also indicate that significant reworking of sediment older than 8 ka during sea level rise is excluded. Thus, coherent erosional pulses (signals) in the river, likely caused by climatic disturbances, are communicated to the canyon at least since ~9.0 ka, suggesting that sediment supply, modulated by climate in the Indus basin, dominates over sea level in controlling canyon sedimentation in high sediment supply settings, although the vast majority of the sediment supply is stored on the shelf and in the delta. Our study for the first time allows the differentiation between reworking within the canyon and direct supply from the river in a major submarine canyon.

Research carried out by the authors’ team in the valleys of many rivers in the Polish Lowlands has shown that the contemporary morphodynamics of channel zones is highly influenced by protrusions of erosion-resistant sub-alluvial bedrock. The article presents the results of analysis of two reaches of the Middle Vistula: near Solec nad Wisłą (km 330-340) and Gołąb (km 382-388), where such protrusions have been found. At each of them, two series of bathymetric measurements were carried out during medium and low water levels in the river channel. The measurements were made using hydrographic sets integrated with a GNSS receiver. The first series of measurements was carried out in July 2004, and the second one in September 2016. In parallel with the bathymetric surveys, low-altitude aerial photographs were taken in 2016 to document the morphology of the channel zone and the condition of the river engineering structures. A comparison of the obtained bathymetric maps shows a high correspondence between the thalweg line from 2004 and that observed twelve years later. This phenomenon proves the significance of the bedrock relief beneath the modern alluvial deposits for the water flow process in the channel. The relief causes the flow to concentrate in specific zones so strongly that it contributes to the damage of river engineering structures that put limits on the channel processes. This trend of concentrating the main thalweg is also accompanied by the diversity of depositional environments of river channel facies, identified along the studied reaches.

The evolution of the channel thalweg and pool-riffle sequences is a critical feature of morphological adjustments in fluvial systems and might have important effects on aquatic habitat quality, channel stability and navigation. Based on the 220 cross-sectional profiles from 2002 to 2016, residual depths and spatial statistical analyses were used to quantitatively analyse the vertical variations and longitudinal distribution of the pool-riffle sequences and channel thalweg in the Yichang-Chenglingji Reach (YCR) of the Middle Yangtze River, which consists of the Yizhi-Zhijiang, Shashi-Gongan and Shishou-Jianli sub-reaches. The results showed that the dramatic reduction in the sediment loads following the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has caused significant adjustments in the size, morphological diversity and spatial distribution of pool-riffle structures in the YCR. The average depth of the pools in the Yizhi-Zhijiang Reach and the Shishou-Jianli Reach overall exhibited a nonlinear growth trend, with the average residual depth increasing by 1.4 m and 1.9 m, respectively. However, the average residual depth in the Shashi-Gongan Reach showed a decreasing trend, with a reduction of approximately 1.2 m. The longitudinal lengths of the riffles in all three reaches contracted to different degrees, and the specific percentage of longitudinal river length occupied by riffles (total riffle length/total sub-reach length) decreased by 8%, 9.6% and 5.9% in the three sub-reaches from upstream to the downstream. In addition, the morphological diversity of the thalweg elevation in the Shashi-Gongan Reach and Shishou-Jianli Reach weakened after the construction of the TGD, while the bed topography in the Yizhi-Zhijiang Reach became more complex and diverse. Moreover, the pool-riffle structures in the YCR were rearranged and distributed regularly following the initiation of the TGD operation, although the variation characteristics of the average pool spacing in the three sub-reaches were quite different. Quantitative relationship between the average residual depth and the previous four-year hydrological condition was proposed for the three sub-reaches based on the Delayed Response Model (DRM) and verified using the measurements from 2013 to 2016.

This paper addresses the problem of extracting the drainage network in forested areas. A precise description of the drainage network including intermittent streams is required for the planning of logging operations and environmental conservation. LiDAR provides now high-resolution point clouds from which the terrain is modelled and the drainage extracted but it also brings some challenges for traditional approaches. First, the raster DTM is interpolated from LiDAR ground points and has to be split in tiles for processing, adding approximations. Second, drainage enforcement techniques alter the terrain and rely on parameters difficult to fix and limiting the optimisation of the process. In this context, we discuss a new approach aiming at: (1) Designing a data structure to model the terrain with a Triangulated Irregular Network in order to avoid interpolation. This data structure must enable the distribution of data and processes across several nodes in Big data architectures and eventually, the processing of complete watersheds with no tiling. (2) Modelling the river network through thalwegs and avoiding the filling and breaching operations. Thalweg detection is more robust, removing the need for filling and breaching. However, it yields a very dense network requiring a simplification step. Combining this model and the architecture will enable the design and modelling of a new tool for river network computation directly from LiDAR ground points. In this paper, we mainly discuss the second point and propose to model the drainage by a network of thalwegs computed from the terrain. Thalwegs are extracted from the surface network, a topological structure formed of peaks, pits and saddles as vertices and ridges and thalwegs as vertices. We present preliminary results comparing the thalweg network and the drainage network.

Mapping of coastal areas, shorelines, estuarine islands are very important in order to determine the hydro dynamic and hydro meteorological behavior of coastal zone and estuarine deltaic tracts. This paper presents the spatio-temporal changes of morphological configuration of shorelines, river banks of deltaic Sagar Island situated in the mouth reaches of Hugli estuary in India. Passing through the western margin of Ganga delta the Hugli river is flowing to the Bay of Bengal in north south direction and it is dominated by strong tidal current. Being the largest island in Hugli estuary Sagar Island represent variety of inter tidal sub tidal sub-environment formed by estuarine erosional and depositional processes. The study aims to monitor and measure the quantitative changes of shorelines, island area, spatio-temporal variations of erosional and depositional processes and resultant landform assemblages by using shoreline change envelop (SCE), net shoreline movement (NSM) and end point rate (EPR). With the help of multi-temporal maps and image (District map, Police station map of 1912–29, SoI Topographical sheets 1967–69 and IRS P6 LISS IV satellite image of 2014), GIS techniques, mathematical modeling of hydro morphological parameters the present study has given a fruitful result. Measurement of shoreline dynamics clearly shows that coastal shoreline and estuarine bank line erosional processes are very active along south eastern coastal tract, south western part of Sagar Island and exposed concave river banks along the north eastern part of Sagar respectively. Finally is has found that intensity of erosion in Sagar Island is strongly controlled by estuarine exposure, sediment composition, channel flow direction, near bank channel depth, orientation of thalweg line, wave form velocity, long shore velocity, direction of longshore current, episodic cyclonic events with mean high tidal ranges and disturbance in estuarine equilibrium condition.

Large wood (LW) plays an essential role in aquatic ecosystem health and function. Traditionally, LW has been removed from streams to minimize localized flooding and increase conveyance efficiency. More recently, LW is often added to streams as a component of stream and river restoration activities. While much research has focused on the role of LW in habitat provisioning, geomorphic stability, and hydraulics at low to medium flows, we know little about the role of LW during storm events. To address this question, we investigated the role of LW on floodplain connectivity along a headwater stream in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Specifically, we conducted two artificial floods, one with and one without LW, and then utilized field measurements in conjunction with hydrodynamic modeling to quantify floodplain connectivity during the experimental floods and to characterize potential management variables for optimized restoration activities. Experimental observations show that the addition of LW increased maximum floodplain inundation extent by 34%, increased floodplain inundation depth by 33%, and decreased maximum thalweg velocity by 10%. Model results demonstrated that different placement of LW along the reach has the potential to increase floodplain flow by up to 40%, with highest flooding potential at cross sections with high longitudinal velocity and shallow depth. Additionally, model simulations show that the effects of LW on floodplain discharge decrease as storm recurrence interval increases, with no measurable impact at a recurrence interval of more than 25 years.

Bankfull discharges play a pivotal but underappreciated role in determining submarine channel morphometrics and architecture. This hypothesis is suggested by the power law relationship between channel morphometrics and discharge and the logarithmic relationship between channel architecture and discharge. We apply this relationship to the Rio Muni deep-water channels of Equatorial Guinea in three ways. Firstly, relatively dilute turbidity currents with a relatively low discharge of ca.1.1 × 104 to 6.9 × 104 m3/s tended to enhance channel confinement and thalweg deposition, but to discourage lateral spreading of the flow. This, in turn, reduced depth and sinuosity (SI) of the channel form as the fill aggraded, as previously reported for younger channels on this slope. These vertically aggraded channel belts [represented by relative angles of channel trajectories (Tc) ranging from 47.2° to 81.0°] are narrower (averaging 634 m), thinner (averaging 23 m), and straighter (mean value of SI = 1.17) than their laterally migrated counterparts. Secondly, turbidity flows with a relatively high discharge of ca.4.1 × 104 to 15.8 × 104 m3/s appear to have reduced channel confinement, but to promote thalweg erosion and lateral spreading of the flow. This, in turn, increased depth and sinuosity of the channel form as it laterally migrated, forming laterally migrated channel belts (represented by a relatively low Tc of 21.8° to 49.0°) that are wider (1.5×), thicker (2×), and more sinuous (1.2×) than their vertically aggraded counterparts. Thirdly, a gradual decrease of discharge through time likely drove an architectural transition from lateral migration to vertical aggradation and associated migrating-to-aggrading channel trajectories.

A reliable representation of river terrains is essential to river research. Field surveys of river channel geometry are time‐consuming, costly, and logistically constrained and thus would encounter difficulties to achieve sufficient spatial coverage, resolution, and frequency of resurvey. This paper aims to demonstrate an efficient approach to building a river terrain model (RTM), the emphasis being on how to combine bathymetry and topography derived from satellite images captured at different flow stages. A method for calculating the difference between high and low stages (DHLS) based on the uniform‐flow theory is proposed. Calculations are carried out for a 13‐km long meandering section of the gravel‐bed Goulais River in Canada, which features pools and riffles, alternating point bars, and midchannel bars. A RTM for this complex section has been successfully produced. It consists of three data components: bathymetry at low stage, topography at high stage, and DHLS. The results capture realistic characteristics, including thalweg shift, steep outer banks, and gradual inner banks. They also show realistic longitudinal and lateral locations of pools and riffles. To illustrate potential applications of RTM, this paper has computed extreme bed shear stresses at bankfull discharge through hydrodynamics simulations of depth‐averaged flow in the river section and further estimated bed‐sediment grain‐size distributions. The estimates compare well with field measurements. The DHLS can vary significantly along a river channel. The proposed method for determining it is not site‐specific, and hence applicable to other rivers. The novelty of the methodology discussed lies in combining remote sensing techniques with physical flow laws.

Sea lamprey is considered an invasive and nuisance species in the Laurentian Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, and the Finger Lakes of New York and is a major focus of control efforts. Currently, management practices focus on limiting the area of infestation using barriers to block migratory adults, and lampricides to kill ammocoetes in infested tributaries. No control efforts currently target the downstream-migrating post-metamorphic life stage which could provide another management opportunity. In order to apply control methods to this life stage, a better understanding of their downstream movement patterns is needed. To quantify spatial distribution of downstream migrants, we deployed fyke and drift nets laterally and vertically across the stream channel in two tributaries of Lake Champlain. Sea lamprey was not randomly distributed across the stream width and lateral distribution showed a significant association with discharge. Results indicated that juvenile sea lamprey is most likely to be present in the thalweg and at midwater depths of the stream channel. Further, a majority of the catch occurred during high flow events, suggesting an increase in downstream movement activity when water levels are higher than base flow. Discharge and flow are strong predictors of the distribution of out-migrating sea lamprey, thus managers will need to either target capture efforts in high discharge areas of streams or develop means to guide sea lamprey away from these areas.

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.The cooler water jets that are present during wind-induced coastal upwellings are known to become unstable after some time and develop into sub-mesoscale phenomena that contribute to the overall mixing. In this study we examine the possibility of vertical shear instabilities, in particular the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability existing in an area where steep bottom slopes are present during an upwelling event in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. The study utilizes a combination of in-situ sampling stations, satellite derived sea surface temperature (SST) data and the HIROMB model for the Baltic Sea. Examination of the velocity shear and stratification shows that it is possible for the KHI instabilities to exist most popularly at the thalweg section of the study area at a depth of 10–16 m. It is also at this exact location that the cross-shore jets were found to develop into meanders and filaments and the greatest gradient in the SST were observed. Thus these observations signal the possibility of the KHI developing in the vicinity of steep slopes and contributing to the overall mixing.

Bed topography in river bends is highly non-uniform as a result of the spiral motion of fluid and sediment transports related to channel curvature. To grasp a full understanding of geomorphology and hydrology in natural river bends, detailed bed topography data are necessary, but are usually not of high enough quality and so require further interpolation for sophisticated studies. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed that is particularly suited to bathymetry interpolation in rivers with apparent bends. The thalweg and the two banks are used as geographical features to ensure that a concave cross-sectional bed-form can be found in bend geometry, while linear interpolations are conducted in the in accordance with secondary and main stream currents, respectively. In comparison with conventional spatial interpolation methods, the proposed algorithm is validated to ensure better performance in generating smooth and accurate bed topography in channel bends, which results in better predictions of river stage by 2D hydrodynamic simulation in practical field tests.

This study uses 3D reflection seismic data to investigate how sediment gravity flows contribute to the evolution of the lower continental slope of the Myanmar margin that is part of the Bengal Fan, the largest deep-water fan system in the world. Seafloor and subseafloor data show large sediment wave fields that developed on both flanks of an extensive submarine canyon. The sediment waves exhibit asymmetric stoss and lee sides, wave lengths and heights of 850–3000 m and 25–70 m, respectively, and an upslope direction of migration. Seismic data reveals the presence of multiple fields of vertically stacked sediment waves, interbedded with units characterised by a chaotic seismic facies that accumulate mainly in the troughs of the sediment waves and can be tracked laterally to the adjacent canyons. According to their seismic facies, geometry, and internal architecture these chaotic units are interpreted as debrites. Seismic attributes extracted from different horizons indicate that the sediment waves are dominated by fine-grained sediment, while the debrites are probably associated with coarser-grained deposits. The debrites fill the troughs of the sediment waves, as well as the downstream portions of canyon thalweg, thus flattening the paleo-seafloor. The sediment waves are interpreted as cyclic steps formed by low-density turbidity currents flowing across the slope down to the basin floor, where the change in gradient favours the formation of hydraulic jumps and the transition from supercritical to subcritical flow conditions. A conceptual model for the sediment wave evolution was proposed for the study area, in the transitional environment on the lower slope, with low-density gravity flow deposits and high-density debris flow deposits alternatively accumulating on the major gravity flow conduits.

This study uses continuous-recording load cell pressure sensors in four, high-elevation (1500–1800 m), Sierra Nevada headwater streams to collect high-temporal-resolution, bedload-movement data for investigating the channel bed movement patterns within these streams for water years 2012–2014. Data show an annual pattern where channel bed material in the thalweg starts to build up in early fall, peaks around peak snow melt, and scours back to baseline levels during hydrograph drawdown and base flow. This pattern is punctuated by disturbance and recovery of channel bed material associated with short-term storm events. A conceptual model, linking sediment sources at the channel margins to patterns of channel bed fill and scour in the thalweg, is proposed building on the results of Martin et al. (2014). The material in the thalweg represents a balance between sediment supply from the channel margins and sporadic, conveyor-belt-like downstream transport in the thalweg. The conceptual model highlights not only the importance of production and transport rates but also that seasonal connectedness between the margins and thalweg is a key sediment control, determining the accumulation rate of sediment stores at the margins and the redistribution of sediment from margins to thalweg that feeds the conveyor belt. Disturbance and recovery cycles are observed at multiple temporal scales; but long term, the channel beds are stable, suggesting that the beds act as short-term storage for sediment but are in equilibrium interannually. The feasibility of use for these sensors in forested mountain stream environments is tested. Despite a high failure rate (50%), load cell pressure sensors show potential for high-temporal-resolution bedload measurements, allowing for the collection of channel bed movement data to move beyond time-integrated change measurements — where many of the subtleties of bedload movement patterns may be missed — to continuous and/or real-time measurements. This type of high-temporal-resolution data provides insight into short-term cycles of bedload movement in high gradient, forested mountain streams.

River valleys are dynamic living ecosystems of utmost importance for flood attenuation that are shaped by inundation dynamics. Topographic and bathymetric surveys represent pivotal information for accurate and up-to-date floodplain studies. Both floodplain morphology as well as fluvial river cross section and thalweg profiles are required for inundation modelling and mapping. However, economic and technical limitations hinder their availability in some regions, resulting in challenges to build two dimensional (2D) flood wave routing simulations at proper accuracy and resolution. In this study, we assess the effectiveness of characterizing the fluvial morphology by means of geomorphic methods (GMs). Different GMs, used as surrogates of fluvial bathymetry, are tested and compared to a dataset of surveyed natural cross sections available for the Tiber River basin (Italy). Quantitative flood modelling performances are developed using a validated 150 m flood model, providing inundation extent and floodplain flow depths for the 200 years return period event. The ability (or inefficiency) of surrogating the lack of surveyed fluvial bathymetric data with GMs for supporting large scale hydraulic inundation modelling studies is assessed by testing the following 5 floodplain modelling configurations: (1) rectangular shaped cross section; (2) floodplain-based; (3) global river database; (4) linear regression bathymetric relationship; and (5) and a very coarse 700 grid resolution. In addition, two Global Flood Hazard Mapping (GFHM) products (hydrological, and hydrogeomorphic) were used as part of the large scale floodplain modelling evaluation framework. Results demonstrate that, once the fluvial channel flow area is preserved, all tested GM models produce consistent simulation of inundation depths and extents (Fit index ≥ 0.90). This work provides a quantitative assessment of the validity of the hypothesis stressing that the floodplain conveyance capacity is the driving principle of flood inundation dynamics under extreme flooding scenarios. Understanding the role of geomorphology during extreme magnitude floods may support the idea that under specific conditions, high resolution models and detailed topography/bathymetry are surplus to requirements. This work supports the application of geomorphic approaches over large riparian domains as a parsimonious solution for flood hazard mapping in data scarce regions for applications beyond flood mitigation and forecasting.

The lower Yellow River (YR) reach is one of the most typical and complex river channels in the world. The impact of human activities on the evolution of its channels is an important scientific issue that needs to be explored. Based on cross-sectional channel data measured at four typical hydrological stations in the lower YR during the period from 1965 to 2015 and the accompanying annual runoff and sediment data, the variation characteristics of the longitudinal slopes of the riverbeds, the width-depth ratio of the cross-sections, and the lateral migration of thalweg points were analyzed. The river phase coefficients (ξ = W1/2/H) of the YR channel across different years were further evaluated. Furthermore, the correlation relationship between the river phase coefficient, annual discharge, and sediment concentration was established. The results show that over the last five decades, the fluctuation of the longitudinal profile of the upper and lower parts of the lower YR was more obvious than that of the middle part, and the variation range of the width of the channel cross sections and the fluctuation of the mainstream line differed in 1965–1973, 1974–1980, 1981–1985, 1986–1999, and 2000–2015. The morphological parameters of the channel cross-section (ξ) were mainly affected by the annual average discharge and sediment concentration, and a good fitting relationship was found through quantitative analyses. Large reservoirs have the function of redistributing water and sediment yields and reducing peak discharges, thereby leading to changes in the erosion-deposition patterns and river morphologies of channels.

The fate of drifting pallid sturgeon larvae [Scaphirhynchus albus, Forbes and Richardson, 1905] from spawning in the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam, Montana, USA remains in question. Previous estimates of drift duration used flow modeling and experimental releases of free embryo pallid sturgeon that were recaptured in nets at incremental distances downstream. The recapture studies hypothesized that the released larvae drift along the river bottom in an intact plume that flushes into the downstream reservoir where they die. Results were interpreted that nearly all drifting embryos would reach Sakakawea Reservoir (~375 river km downstream) in just 6 days, suggesting that there is insufficient drift distance for successful reproduction of pallid sturgeon. Those experiments recaptured less than 1% of the released larvae, thus the dispersal fate of the remaining ~99% of drifting larvae remains unknown. We hypothesized that the river is extremely dispersive due to complex channel bathymetry and flow, which spreads the plume of drifting particles bank to bank within a few kilometers downstream of the release location, and that the same would be true for drifting free embryos. This is referred to as the Drift Dispersion Hypothesis. This hypothesis was tested by conducting high‐resolution 3D flow and depth mapping, spanning the width of the Missouri River for 338 km in coordination with an embryo release and recapture study conducted in June 2016. Fort Peck Dam discharge was stabilized for the experiment. Hydraulic base maps were used to calculate particle drift paths and estimate drift speeds in (i) the bottom boundary layer (0.5 m) and (ii) the whole water column, as a surrogate for drifting larvae. Drift path patterns indicated wide lateral dispersion across the river, bank to bank. Drift simulations indicated that less than 10% of the fastest drifting embryos could reach Sakakawea Reservoir in just 6.56 days, but only if they remained mid‐column and in the channel thalweg the entire distance. However, the fastest drifting particles that remained in the bottom boundary layer would not reach Sakakawea Reservoir for 31 days. Concluded was that most drifting embryos must be swept from the thalweg into low velocity habitats and stall, extending their river residence time. Stall locations were recorded along the entire study reach. The results indicate that drift duration is not the limiting factor for pallid sturgeon recruitment when spawning occurs near the embryo release site downstream of Fort Peck Dam.

Seasonal variability in the sediment dynamics of a Bay of Fundy tidal creek and salt marsh system was analyzed to better understand the ecomorphodynamics of a high suspended sediment concentration intertidal habitat. Data were collected over 62 tides for velocity, suspended sediment concentration, deposition, and grain size at four stations from the creek thalweg to the marsh surface. Five topographic surveys were also conducted throughout the 14-month study. Deposition rates per tide varied spatially from 56.4 g m-2 at the creek thalweg to 15.3 g m-2 at the marsh surface. Seasonal variations in deposition in the creek and marsh surface were from 38.0 g m-2 to 97.7 g m-2 and from 12.2 g m-2 to 19.6 g m-2 respectively. Deposition and erosion were greatest in late fall and winter. This seasonal change, led by higher suspended sediment concentrations, was observed in the creek and at the marsh bank but notably absent from the marsh edge and marsh surface. Sediments were predominantly deposited in floc form (76–83%). Because of high floc content, higher suspended sediment concentrations led to more rapid loss of sediment from suspension. With increasing sediment concentration, deposition increased in the tidal creek and at the marsh bank but not at the marsh edge or marsh surface. This suggests that in highly flocculated environments the water column clears fast enough that very little sediment remains in suspension when the water reaches the marsh and that the sediment concentration during marsh inundation is independent of the initial concentration in the creek.

Digital outcrop models help to constrain the interactions of stratigraphic and structural heterogeneity on ancient depositional systems. This study uses a stochastic approach that incorporates stratigraphic and structural modeling to interrogate the three-dimensional morphology of deep-water channel strata outcropping on Sierra del Toro in the Magallanes Basin of Chile. This approach considers the relative contributions, and associated uncertainty, of erosional downcutting versus post-depositional structural folding and small-offset faulting on the present-day configuration of the submarine channel complexes. Paleodepositional channel-belt gradients were modeled using a combination of three-dimensional visualization, stochastic surface modeling, palinspastic restoration, and decompaction modeling that are bound with errors constrained by stratigraphic and structural uncertainty. Modeling results indicate that at least 100 m of downcutting occurs over 6 km, and the resultant thalweg gradient of 64–125 m/km (decompacted) suggests that the Cerro Toro axial channel belt is an out-of-grade depositional system. Furthermore, the presence of steeper segments (100–175 m/km decompacted) suggests the preservation of one or more knickpoints that are similar in magnitude to tectonically-induced knickpoints on the modern seafloor. The interpreted knickpoints are correlated with a decreasing channel width-depth ratio and an increase of channel depth. These results indicate that stochastic surface modeling using digital outcrop models can constrain stratigraphic interpretations and post-depositional structural heterogeneity.

In Mediterranean-type river systems, naturally low seasonal stream flows are often overexploited, which has implications for managing flows for environmental as well as human needs. Traditional approaches to instream flow management are not well suited to unregulated systems with strong seasonal patterns of water availability and many water diverters, and are challenging to implement in such systems. They often do not protect the full range of variability in the annual hydrograph, require extensive site-specific data, expensive modelling or both. In contrast, holistic flow management strategies, such as percent-of-flow (POF) strategies are designed to protect multiple ecological processes and preserve inter-annual flow variability. However, POF approaches typically require real-time streamflow gauging, and often lack a robust metric relating a diversion rate to ecological processes in the stream. To address these challenges, we present a modified percent-of-flow (MPOF) diversion approach where diversions are allocated from a streamflow baseline which is derived from a regional relationship between a conservative streamflow-exceedance and date. The streamflow baseline remains the same from year to year, and is independent of water-year type. This approach protects inter-annual flow variability and provides a predictable daily allowable volume of diversion at any diversion point—supporting efficient water management planning. The allowable diversion rate in the MPOF approach is based not on a fixed percentage of the ambient streamflow, but rather on a maximum allowable percentage change in riffle crest thalweg depth, an ecologically meaningful, common hydraulic measurement. In this paper, we demonstrate that the MPOF approach is a holistic approach well suited to manage diversions in unregulated streams typical of California's Mediterranean-type coastal drainages.
