Abstract

By processing large quantities of crop residues, earthworms enhance the mineralization of organic matter but have also been shown to stabilize soil organic carbon (SOC) into soil fractions like microaggregates (53-250 mu m) within macroaggregates (> 250 mu m) especially in no-till soils. Our objective was to find direct evidence on the impact of an anecic, soil surface-feeding earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris L., on the redistribution of SOC and soil nitrogen (N) into macroaggregate-occluded soil fractions of boreal soils. We sampled soil (0-5 cm depth) from the middens of L. terrestris (mounds of collected residue and surface casts at the openings of its permanent burrows) and the adjacent non-midden (bulk) soil at three no-till sites in southern Finland: two clayey sites (sites 1-2) and one coarse textured site (site 3). Compared to bulk soil, the soil in L. terrestris middens featured general increase in aggregate size and content of SOC and N within the large macroaggregates (> 2000 mu m) at the clayey sites. The microaggregates within the large macroaggregates had accumulated more SOC and N in the midden soil especially at site 1 where 99% of the difference in total SOC between midden and bulk soil was associated with this type of SOC stabilization. At site 2, the increase in SOC found in the large macroaggregates was counteracted by a decrease in SOC in microaggregates within the small macroaggregates (250-2000 mu m). No differences in SOC stored in soil fractions were found between midden and non-midden soil at the coarse soil site 3 with higher top soil decomposition rate compared to sites 1 and 2. Across the study sites, the total amount of SOC was 6% higher in midden soil compared to the bulk soil. These results suggest L. terrestris mediates the storage of SOC and N into better protected soil fractions in clay soils under boreal conditions.

Abstract

To achieve appropriate yield levels, inherent nitrogen (N) supply and biological N fixation are often complemented by fertilization. To avoid economic losses and negative environmental impacts due to over-application of N fertilizer, estimation of the inherent N supply is critical. We aimed to identify the roles of soil texture and organic matter in N mineralization and yield levels attained in cereal cultivation with or without N fertilization in boreal mineral soils. First, the net N mineralization and soil respiration were measured by laboratory incubation with soil samples varying in clay and organic carbon (C) contents. Secondly, to estimate the inherent soil N supply under field conditions, both unfertilized and fertilized cereal yields were measured in fields on clay soils (clay 30-78%) and coarse-textured soils (clay 0-28%). In clay soils (C 2.5-9.0%), both the net N mineralization and the cereal yields (without and with fertilization) decreased with increasing clay/C ratio. Moreover, in soils with high clay/C ratio, the agronomic N use efficiency (additional yield per kg of fertilizer N) varied considerably, indicating the presence of growth limitations other than N. In coarse-textured soils, the yield increase attained by fertilization increased with increasing organic C. Our results indicate that for clay soils in a cool and humid climate, the higher the clay content, the more organic C is needed to produce reasonable yields and to ensure efficient use of added nutrients without high N losses to the environment. For coarse soils having a rather high mean organic C of 2.3%, the organic C appeared to improve agronomic N use efficiency. For farmers, simple indicators such as the clay/C ratio or the use of non-N-fertilized control plots may be useful for site-specific adjustment of the rates of N fertilization. Highlights We aimed to identify simple indicators of inherent soil N supply applicable at the farm level. In clay soils, the net N mineralization was found to correlate negatively with the clay/C ratio. In coarse-textured soils, agronomic N use efficiency improved with increasing soil organic C. Clay soils with high clay/C ratio are at risk of low yield levels.

Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. 4. Earthworms in past and present agricultural landscapes of Hebridean Scotland

Abstract

The Hebrides of Scotland constitute a unique set of island environments with a long history of human settlement and agriculture. Earthworm community surveys were undertaken in selected agricultural landscapes of Inner (Isle of Rum) and Outer (North and South Uist) Hebrides. On North Uist, earthworms were sampled from areas of Blackland (organic, anthropic, acidic agricultural soils) and on South Uist in machair (sandy, fertile, low-lying grassy pasture). Specific grassland and cultivated areas with various organic additions - including dung and seaweed - were targeted, using hand-sorting of soil for earthworms plus mustard vermifuge extraction. Work on Rum investigated earthworms in ridge and furrow (lazybed) agricultural systems, abandoned almost 200 years ago and since uncultivated, but grazed by ungulates. On the Uists, nine earthworm species were identified, representing all three ecological categories, but dominated by the epigeics, Dendrobaena octaedra and Lumbricus rubellus. Densities and biomasses across Blackland soils ranged from 10-130 ind. m−2 and 2.3–33.7 g m−2, respectively. Here, 5 species were present, and management had a significant effect on species richness and abundance with most earthworms present in recently restored lazybeds. In the machair soils, the corresponding measurements were 4–220 ind. m−2 and 0.8–89.0 g m−2. Significantly higher earthworm densities and biomasses were recovered below cattle dung pats compared with dung-free areas. Cultivated areas in machair were less diverse and had lower earthworm densities than uncultivated. On Rum, ridge and furrow abundances did not differ clearly with 24–102 and 34–112 ind. m−2 respectively and biomasses of 7.4–26.3 and 8.8–30.8 g m−2. Here, Aporrectodea caliginosa (49%), L. rubellus (23%) and Dendrodrilus rubidus (19%) dominated of the seven species found. Further research on earthworms in the Hebrides is warranted.

Abstract

Nutrient status of arable soils is linked to food production potential and environmental risks. The use of nutrients is affected by policy measures, which formulation calls for data on the long-term development of soil fertility. In Finland, the chemical status (pH 4.65 ammonium acetate-extractable nutrients and pHw) of cultivated topsoils has been surveyed at the same sites in 1974 (n = 1835), 1987, 1998 and 2009 (n = 524). The aims of this study were to determine the temporal trends in P, S, macro nutrient cations and pH utilizing the monitoring data, to find explanations for the trends, and to assess the current status of fertility in the Finnish cultivated soils. The mean soil P concentrations continuously increased with time in clay, fine-textured and mull soils, or first increased but later turned to a decrease in coarse mineral soils, and exhibited no trend in peat soils. Between 1998 and 2009, high P concentrations tended to decrease whereas low P increased, the magnitude of the change being dependent on cropping system (if > 80% of the time planted with annual crops, perennial crops, or under rotation of the two). The trends of the other nutrients mostly reflected the balances of the elements in agricultural soils. The trend for S was generally increasing between 1987 and 1998, but turned to a decline after 1998. The general trends in the mean Ca, Mg and pH were increasing, whereas the initial upward trend for K leveled off after 1987. Based on the 2009 sampling, the current soil fertility is sufficient, but attention is to be paid on S and K status, and the overall fertility of coarse mineral soils.

Abstract

Reclamation of acid sulfate (AS) soils for agriculture causes severe environmental problems and may expose the human population to increased metal intake in some cases. This is due to drainage-induced oxidation of reduced sulfide-rich sediments, and subsequent acid formation and metal mobilization in the soil. Most of the mobilized elements are lost through leaching, but some metals may be transported upwards in the soil profile. In this study, we compared the concentrations of total N and C, electrical conductivity (EC), and easily available (AAAc/AAAcEDTA-extractable) Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, S, and Zn in the surface horizon (0-15 cm) of arable AS and non-AS soils, classified on a map basis (mb), in the whole coastal area of Finland covered by the Litorina Sea stage of the Baltic Sea. Our aim was to assess whether the surface horizon of AS soils poses a risk of increased metal bioavailability. The study was conducted by combining two regional-scale datasets, monitoring data on the chemical status of Finnish cultivated soils, and a probability map of occurrence of AS soils in coastal areas of Finland. Mean total N and C concentration was 40% and 56% higher, respectively, in fine-textured AS(mp )soils, and 20% and 18% higher, respectively, in clay AS(mp) soils, than in the corresponding non-AS(mp) soils, although in clay soils the differences were not statistically significant. Electrical conductivity and easily available S and Ni concentrations were significantly higher in AS(mp) soils than in non-AS(mp) soils (29%, 56%, and 106% higher, respectively, in fine soils; 72%, 61%, and 47% higher, respectively, in clay soils). Mean Fe, Cr, Cu, and Zn concentrations were higher in AS(mp) than non-AS(mp) soils, but the difference was statistically significant only for Zn in clay soils (63%) and Cr in fine soils (68%). Mean Al, Cd, and Pb concentrations did not differ between AS(mp) and non-AS(mp) soils. These results are consistent with earlier findings in more spatially restricted studies. Enrichment of easily available metals in the surface horizon of AS soils could affect the quality of crops grown on these soils, an issue requiring further study.

Abstract

We studied the effect of the deep-burrowing earthworm Lumbricus terrestris on the greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and global warming potential (GWP) of arable no-till soil using both field measurements and a controlled 15-week laboratory experiment. In the field, the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were on average 43 and 32 % higher in areas occupied by L. terrestris (the presence judged by the surface midden) than in adjacent, unoccupied areas (with no midden). The fluxes of methane (CH4) were variable and had no consistent difference between the midden and non-midden areas. Removing the midden did not affect soil N2O and CO2 emissions. The laboratory results were consistent with the field observations in that the emissions of N2O and CO2 were on average 27 and 13 % higher in mesocosms with than without L. terrestris. Higher emissions of N2O were most likely due to the higher content of mineral nitrogen and soil moisture under the middens, whereas L. terrestris respiration fully explained the observed increase in CO2 emissions in the laboratory. In the field, the significantly elevated macrofaunal densities in the vicinity of middens likely contributed to the higher emissions from areas occupied by L. terrestris. The activity of L. terrestris increased the GWP of field and laboratory soil by 50 and 18 %, but only 6 and 2 % of this increase was due to the enhanced N2O emission. Our results suggest that high N2O emissions commonly observed in no-till soils can partly be explained by the abundance of L. terrestris under no-till management and that L. terrestris can markedly regulate the climatic effects of different cultivation practises.

Abstract

We studied the soil community and habitat consequences of introducing a deep-burrowing, sedentary life-style earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris (dew-worm) into arable zero-till clay. Seventeen years after introduction, which was originally aimed at improving the macroporosity and permeability of the heavy clay soil, we returned to the gradient of L. terrestris dispersal (well established, more recent and no settlement) and investigated the temporal development of the ecosystem engineering impacts on different faunal groups (earthworms, enchytraeids and nematodes) and soil porosity. The faunal re- sponses were examined both at L. terrestris midden scale (individual living site) and field scale. We found that L. terrestris middens sustained elevated densities of all three faunal groups. In the case of earth- worms, there was evidence for temporal development of the engineering impact as the difference be- tween the midden and non-midden areas was more pronounced in the well-established areas than close to the leading edge of dispersal. The earthworm community composition was not altered at L. terrestris midden sites. The settlement of L. terrestris had no discernible effects on field-scale earthworm and nematode abundances, but enchytraeids were practically absent beyond the leading edge of the dispersal. This effect might, however, be partly explained by a gradient of increasing clay content. Soil macroporosity at L. terrestris midden sites did not increase with the age of L. terrestris settlement. Our results suggest that L. terrestris settlement in a clay soil can significantly increase the spatial patchiness of soil fauna, but may not, except in the case of enchytraeids, affect their field-scale abundances or the macroporosity of the soil in the vicinity of L. terrestris living sites.

Abstract

A glasshouse experiment was conducted to study if glyphosate spraying has immediate short-term effects on the growth, reproduction and residue incorporation of the earthworm species Lumbricus terrestris L. The experiment simulated post-harvest conditions in no-till cereal cultivation, where L. terrestris often abound, and glyphosate is widely used. Pairs of adult, field-collected L. terrestris (median total mass 11.2 g fresh weight) were kept in fine sand-filled cylinders, with chopped wheat straw on the soil surface as feed. The treatment cylinders were sprayed with glyphosate at normal field application rate [Rodeo® XL 3.0 l ha−1, resulting in 1080 g a.i. ha−1 and “Contact” surfactant (0.5 l ha−1)]; the controls were sprayed with water (N = 12 for both). The treatment and control cylinders were maintained for two months at +15 °C, approximate 60% air humidity and 12h:12h light:dark cycle. All individuals survived the experiment. There was no difference in L. terrestris mass change over the experiment, with an average weight change of +0.96% in glyphosate treatment and −0.93% change in the control (p = 0.66). Glyphosate treatment and control did not differ in cocoon production rate (31 vs 28 cocoons cylinder−1 respectively; p = 0.30). The straw incorporation was slightly but not significantly lower in glyphosate-treated soil (decline in surface straw mass 27.5% vs. 30.5%; p = 0.07). The glyphosate treatment applied represents a commonly used practice in spring cereal cultivation, and it did not affect negatively L. terrestris. The varying study results on the effects of glyphosate on earthworms – and on L. terrestris in particular – may partly arise from notable variation in application rates and the formulation-surfactant combinations used in different experiments which needs to be considered in the ecological risk assessment of glyphosate use.

In many arable soils, earthworms form the key component of the soil animal community and greatly contribute to soil quality. Our goal was to identify variables that can explain the variation of earthworm communities across Finnish arable fields by focusing on both regional aspects, such as climate and inherent soil properties, and local aspects, such as field management practices and field margins. We sampled the earthworms during the autumn of 2004 and 2005 at 53 sites of cultivated fields and margins, distributed to 11 localities ranging from the southern parts of Finland to the Arctic Circle. Simultaneously, information was collected on topsoil properties, cultivation history, and climatic factors. We found that soil type was by far the best regional variable to explain the variation in total earthworm density, the density being highest in medium coarse soils, i.e., silts and very fine sands. Abstract

We studied the effects of tillage and straw management on soil aggregation and soil carbon sequestration in a 30-year split-plot experiment on clay soil in southern Finland. The experimental plots were under conventional or reduced tillage with straw retained, removed or burnt. Wet sieving was done to study organic carbon and soil composition divided in four fractions: 1) large macroaggregates, 2) small macroaggregates, 3) microaggregates and 4) silt and clay. To further estimate the stability of carbon in the soil, coarse particulate organic matter, microaggregates and silt and clay were isolated from the macroaggregates. Total carbon stock in the topsoil (equivalent to 200 kg m − 2 ) was slightly lower under reduced tillage (5.0 kg m − 2 ) than under conventional tillage (5.2 kg m − 2 ). Reduced tillage changed the soil composition by increasing the percentage of macroaggregates and decreasing the percentage of microaggregates. There was no evidence of differences in the composition of the macroaggregates or carbon content in the macroaggregate-occluded fractions. However, due to the higher total amount of macroaggregates in the soil, more carbon was bound to the macroaggregate-occluded microaggregates in reduced tillage. Compared with plowed soil, the density of deep burrowing earthworms ( Lumbricus terrestris ) was considerably higher under reduced tillage and positively associated with the percentage of large macroaggregates. The total amount of microbial biomass carbon did not differ between the treatments. Straw management did not have discernible effects either on soil aggregation or soil carbon stock. We conclude that although reduced tillage can improve clay soil structure, generally the chances to increase topsoil carbon sequestration by reduced tillage or straw management practices appear limited in cereal monoculture systems of the boreal region. This may be related to the already high C content of soils, the precipitation level favoring decomposition and aggregate turnover in the winter with topsoil frost.

All living organisms modify their biotic and abiotic environment. Niche construction theory posits that organism-mediated modifications to the environment can change selection pressures and influence the evolutionary trajectories of natural populations. While there is broad support for this proposition in general, there is considerable uncertainty about how niche construction is related to other similar concepts in ecology and evolution. Comparative studies dealing with certain aspects of niche construction are increasingly common, but there is a troubling lack of experimental tests of the core concepts of niche construction theory. Here, we propose an operational framework to evaluate comparative and experimental evidence of the evolutionary consequences of niche construction, and suggest how such research can improve our understanding of ecological and evolutionary dynamics in ecosystems. Abstract

International audience; Sampling strategy, in terms of physical size and positioning of the sampling units, may affect strongly the results of spatial surveys. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of sampling unit size on the perception of spatial patterns of earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris L.) middens. The implications for optimal sampling strategy for spatial interpolation were assessed. Spatial variation of midden density was investigated in Vaisakko forest, south-western Finland, using 225 sample points distributed on a square grid with a minimum distance of 25 m between samples. At each point, middens were counted within samples of sequentially increasing size (sample surface 0.125, 0.25, 1 m2) and analysed by means of geostatistics. The results showed significant spatial continuity of midden distribution in all cases. Whereas, neither the estimate of mean middens density nor the global distribution pattern were markedly affected by sample unit size, the total variance increased considerably with decreasing sample unit area. Isotropic variograms for different sample unit sizes were all spherical but large discrepancies in the model parameters were observed. The nugget variance tended to decrease with increasing sample unit size while the spatial variance increased slightly. Since changing sample unit size affected the variogram we also investigated the consequences in terms of optimal sampling strategy for spatial interpolation by punctual kriging. Increasing the quadrat size from 0.25 to 1 m2 and simultaneously increasing the sample spacing from 25 to 50 m, so that the sampling effort was constant in terms of total surface investigated, did not affect the kriging standard deviation. The positive effect of increasing quadrat size was thus enough to compensate the negative effect of the correspondingly sparser sampling grid. The results showed that while the sampling unit size did not have strong effect on the perception of general midden distribution in the forest, it did have marked consequences in the spatial modelling of the phenomenon. The issue of sampling unit size is clearly worthy of careful consideration in the planning of field studies and geostatistical tools can be put to good use in evaluating the pros and cons of different sampling strategies

We report diurnal changes in vertical distribution ofDaphnia longispina andD. magna in shallow (25–60 cm) rock-pools on Baltic islands, southern Finland. During the daytime shallow rock-poolDaphnia reside in water layers close to the sediment while at midnight they either are evenly distributed throughout the water column, or have a modal peak of distribution in the surface water. Contrary to this pattern, no changes were observed in vertical distribution ofD. longispina at noon and at midnight in a 150 cm deep pond. We suggest that the pattern ofDaphina vertical migration in shallow rock-pools is not satisfactorily explained by predation.

Abstract

To study the effects of short-term experience on prey size-selection ten-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) were fed 7–13 days with five differing diets of novel prey, Daphnia magna. The diets consisted either of a mixture of two prey size classes (1.7 and 2.2 mm) or of single-sized (1.7 and 2.2 mm) prey. Before and after the diets, the sticklebacks' prey size selection was tested with a 1:1 ratio of 1.7 and 2.2 mm D. magna. Sticklebacks made more attempts to capture large than small prey, but their foraging success was better for small than for large prey. Sticklebacks fed with a diet of both prey sizes chose significantly more large prey on the 13th day than on the 7th day or at the beginning of the experiment. Handling times for both Daphnia size classes decreased slightly with increasing foraging experience. Inexperienced sticklebacks made more unsuccessful strikes on large prey than did experienced fish. Foraging success on large prey improved somewhat with increasing experience in all but one diet group. The results indicate that experience affected ten-spined sticklebacks' prey selection.
