Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42.

Abstract

Cross sections and corresponding momentum distributions have been measured for the first time at zero degrees for the exotic nuclei obtained from a beam of 18O at 8.5 MeV/A impinging on a 1 mg/cm2 238U target. Sizable cross sections were found for the production of exotic species arising from the neutron transfer and proton removal from the projectile. Comparisons of experimental results with calculations based on deep-inelastic reaction models, taking into account the particle evaporation process, indicate that zero degree is a scattering angle at which the differential reaction cross section for production of exotic nuclei is at its maximum. This result is important in view of the new generation of zero degrees spectrometers under construction, such as the S3 separator at GANIL, for example. Abstract

Relatively neutron-rich thorium isotopes lie at the heart of a nuclear region of nuclei exhibiting octupole correlation effects. The detailed level structure of Th223 has been investigated in measurements of γ radiation following the fusion-evaporation channel of the Pb208(O18,3n)Th223 reaction at 85 MeV beam energy. The level structure has been extended up to spin 49/2, and 33 new γ rays have been added using triple-γ coincidence data. The spins and parities of the newly observed states have been confirmed by angular distribution ratios. In addition to the two known yrast bands based on a K=5/2 configuration, a non-yrast band has been established up to spin 35/2. We interpret this new structure as based on the same configuration as the yrast band in Th221 having dominant K=1/2 contribution. At the highest spin a backbending occurs around a rotational frequency of ℏω=0.23 MeV, very close to the one predicted in Th222, where a sharp transition to a reflection-symmetric shape is expected.

Abstract

The 16-channel fast stretcher BaFPro module, originally developed for processing signals of Barium Fluoride scintillators, has been modified to make a high performing analog pulse-shape analysis of signals from the NE213 liquid scintillators of the EDEN neutron detector array. The module produces two Gaussian signals, whose amplitudes are proportional to the height of the fast component of the output light and to the total energy deposited into the scintillator, respectively. An in-beam test has been performed at INFN-LNS (Italy) demonstrating a low detection threshold, a good pulse-shape discrimination even at low energies and a wide dynamic range for the measurement of the neutrons energy.

Abstract

The current status of fission dynamics studies in heavy-ion collisions around the Coulomb barrier is illustrated with the 34S + 186W reaction. The fission-fragment mass and total kinetic energy were measured at the ALTO facility at IPN Orsay, France, with a dedicated set-up using the (v, E) approach. The measurement reveals the presence of an asymmetric fission component on top of a predominantly symmetric distribution. The asymmetric structure, pointed out for the first time, is discussed along with results of previous experiments studying the same reaction. While these analyses suggested the contribution from either quasi-fission or pre-equilibrium fission, we offer an alternative interpretation, in terms of shell-driven compound-nucleus fission. The present measurement demonstrates the critical influence of resolution when addressing puzzling cases, situated at the crossroads of the various channels opened in a heavy-ion collision. Current status in the field clearly calls for innovative measurements involving manifold correlations and new observables. The outcome of the attempt done in this work in this direction, based on the coincident measurement of prompt \( \gamma\)-rays is reported, and encouraging perspectives are discussed.

Abstract

The neutron-rich $^{39}\mathrm{S}$ nucleus has been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of $^{36}\mathrm{S}$ ions with a thin $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target. The magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray array, CLARA, were used in the measurements. Gamma-ray transitions of the following energies were observed: 339, 398, 466, 705, 1517, 1656, and 1724 keV. Five of the observed transitions have been tentatively assigned to the decay of excited states with spins up to ($11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$). The results of a state-of-the-art shell-model calculation of the level scheme of $^{39}\mathrm{S}$ using the SDPF-U effective interaction are also presented. The systematic behavior of the excitation energy of the first $11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states in the odd-$A$ isotopes of sulfur and argon is discussed in relation to the excitation energy of the first excited ${2}^{+}$ states of the adjacent even-$A$ isotopes. The states of $^{39}\mathrm{S}$ that have the components in their wave functions corresponding to three neutrons in the $1{f}_{7/2}$ orbital outside the $N=20$ core have also been discussed within the context of the 0 $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$ shell-model calculations presented here.

Abstract

K. Hadyńska-Kl¸ek et al. ; 7 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 02+ has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A∼40 mass region is discussed. The neutron decay of the resonant states of light neutron-rich nuclei is an important and poorly explored property, useful to extract valuable nuclear structure information. In the present paper the neutron decay of the C15 resonances populated via the two-neutron transfer reaction C13(O18,O16n) at 84-MeV incident energy is reported for the first time using an innovative technique which couples the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer and the EDEN neutron detector array. Experimental data show that the resonances below the one-neutron emission threshold decay to the C14 ground state via one-neutron emission with an almost 100% total branching ratio, whereas the recently observed C15 giant pairing vibration at 13.7 MeV mainly decays via two-neutron emission.

Abstract

We have performed the $^{70}\mathrm{Zn}(d,^{3}\mathrm{He})^{69}\mathrm{Cu}$ proton pick-up reaction in direct kinematics using a deuteron beam at 27 MeV. The outgoing $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ particles were detected at the focal-plane detection system of an Enge split-pole spectrometer. The excitation-energy spectrum was reconstructed up to 7 MeV and spectroscopic factors were obtained after analysis of the angular distributions in the finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation. The results show three new angular distributions for which the $\ensuremath{\pi}{f}_{7/2}$ strength was measured and a lower limit of the centroid is established. State-of-the-art shell-model calculations are performed and predict a $\ensuremath{\pi}{f}_{7/2}$ strength that lies too high in energy in comparison to our experimental results.

Abstract

The level structures of the N = 50 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni ( Z = 28 ). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28 . This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28 .

Abstract

The 81, 82, 83, 85Se nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction 18O + 208Pb at 85MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Euroball IV array. Their high-spin level schemes have been built from the triple $ \gamma$ -ray coincidence data and $ \gamma$ - $ \gamma$ angular correlations have been analyzed in order to assign spin and parity values to many observed states. The lowest-spin states of the two-neutron and three-neutron configurations are strongly mixed with two-proton excitations among the fp orbits. On the other hand, the highest-spin states of these neutron configurations are found to remain almost pure. Neutron excitation across the N = 50 gap is observed both in 83Se49 and in 85Se51 .

Abstract

International audience; The (13)C((18)O,(16)O)(15)C and (12)C((18)O,(16)O)(14)C reactions at 84 MeV incident energy were explored up to high excitation energy of the residual nucleus thanks to the use of the MAGNEX spectrometer to detect the ejectiles. In the region above the two-neutron separation energy, a resonance has been observed in both nuclei, attributed to the Giant Pairing Vibration (GPV). The neutron decay of the (15)C resonances, including the GPV, populated via the two- neutron transfer reaction has been studied using an innovative technique, which couples MAGNEX with the EDEN neutron detector array. The data show that the (15)C GPV mainly decays via two-neutron emission.

Abstract

R. Chapman et al. ; 8 págs.; 6 figs.; 2 tabs., Excited states of the neutron-rich N=21 S37 nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of S36 ions with a thin Pb208 target. The magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the γ-ray array, CLARA, were used in the measurements. The level scheme of S37 was established to an excitation energy of 4196 keV and a number of new transitions were observed, in particular that corresponding to the decay of the proposed Jπ=(11/2-) level at an excitation energy of 2776 keV. The structure of the state is discussed within the context of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U effective interaction; the main component of the wave function corresponds to the coupling of the odd 1f7/2 neutron to the first 2+ state of the S36 core. The electromagnetic decay properties of the state are discussed within the context of a particle-core coupling model and the shell model. Abstract

The gamma-decay properties of 24Mg excited states are investigated in the inverse reaction 24Mg+12C at E(24Mg) = 130 MeV. At this energy the direct inelastic scattering populates a 24Mg* energy region where 12C+12C breakup resonances can occur. Very exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer (BRS) in coincidence with EUROBALL installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of the IReS at Strasbourg. Abstract

The Br-84,Br-85 nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction O-18+Pb-208 at 85 MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Euroball IV array. The high-spin states of the odd-odd Br-84 nucleus have been identified for the first time, the observed structure being built on the known 6(-) isomeric state. High-spin states of Br-85 have been observed up to 5.4 MeV excitation energy and spin I similar to 21/2. From angular correlation analysis, spin values have been assigned to most of the Br-85 excited states up to 4 MeV. None of these excited states has been found to exhibit a delayed decay having T-1/2 > 10ns. All the observed states in Br-84,Br-85 can be described by various proton excitations involving at least the two sub-shells (pi f(5/2) and pi p(3/2)) located just above the Z = 28 shell closure.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Shell structure evolution in nuclei situated at the extremes of neutron and proton excess are investigated using in-beam gamma spectroscopy techniques with radioactive beams at GANIL. A selection of results obtained very recently is presented: i) The reduced transition probabilities B(E2;0+1 → 2+) of the neutron-rich 74Zn and 70Ni nuclei have been measured using Coulomb excitation at intermediate energy. An unexpected large proton core polarization has been found in 70Ni and interpreted as being due to the monopole interaction between the neutron g9/2 and protons f7/2 and f5/2 spin-orbit partner orbitals. ii) Two proton knock-out reactions has been performed in order to study the most neutron-rich nuclei at the N = 28 shell closure. Gamma rays spectra and momentum distribution have been obtained for 42Si and neighboring nuclei. Evidence has been found for a deformed structure at N = 28 for Silicon, despite a relatively large Z = 14 gap. iii) The in-beam gamma spectroscopy of 36Ca performed using neutron knock-out reactions revealed that N = 16 is as large sub-shell closure as Z = 16 in 36S. The uniquely large excitation energy difference of the first 2+ state in these mirror nuclei turns out to be a consequence of their relatively pure neutron or proton 1p(d3/2)-1h(s1/2) nature.

Abstract

The Kr-87 nucleus has been produced as fission fragment in the fusion reaction O-18+Pb-208 at 85 MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Euroball IV array. High-spin states of this neutron-rich isotope have been identified for the first time. Its level scheme has been obtained up to 6.3 MeV excitation energy and spin I similar to 23/2 (h) over bar. Its structure is interpreted by analogy with those of the heavier isotones. The proposed configurations involve both proton and neutron excitations from several sub-shells located close to the Fermi levels, particularly nu d(5/2), pi p(3/2)f(5/2) and pi g(9/2). Moreover, a revised spin value of 5/2(-) for the Br-87 ground state is proposed.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The gamma decay of the nuclei 124,125Ba has been investigated with the EUROBALL array, using the reaction 64Ni+64 Ni at E_{beam} = 255 and 261 MeV. Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus 125Ba, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The pi = 3-level of the nucleus 124Ba has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

Abstract

The structure of the A/Z = 3 nucleus 15B has been investigated using the in-beam $\gamma$ -spectroscopy technique with a fragmentation reaction of a 36S beam on a 9Be target at 77.5 ${\rm MeV}\cdot A$ . The fragments were identified and selected by their energy loss and time of flight using the SPEG spectrograph. $\gamma$ -ray energies and intensities have been measured in coincidence with the projectile-like fragments. From this information as well as from the $\gamma\gamma$ -coincidence relationships a level scheme is proposed for 15B up to the neutron separation energy. The experimental results have been interpreted using shell model calculations in the psd valence space. Effects of the weakly bound nature of the valence neutrons have been observed.

Abstract

The He-8 + Pb-208 reaction was studied in the first experiment with the EXOGAM germanium detector array using beam delivered by the SPIRAL facility. gamma-rays from direct and fusion-evaporation reactions were observed with high resolution. gamma-gamma coincidence data were obtained at a beam intensity level of 105 8He particles per second. Specially designed absorbers and beam detectors could further reduce the background radiation by orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The neutron-rich nuclei 23 60-63V have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 61.8A·MeV 76Ge beam with a 58Ni target. Beta-decay to 24 60-63Cr has been investigated using combined β- and γ-ray spectroscopy. Half-lives of the 60-63V nuclei have been determined, and the existence of a beta-decay isomer in the 60V nucleus is strongly supported. The observation of low-energy 2+ states in 60Cr (646keV) and 62Cr (446keV) suggests that these isotopes are strongly deformed with β2 ∼ 0.3. This is confirmed by shell model calculations which show the dominant influence of the intruder g and d orbitals to obtain low 2+ energies in the neutron-rich Cr isotopes.

Abstract

The structure of the $^{24}$F nucleus has been studied at GANIL using the $\beta$ decay of $^{24}$O and the in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy from the fragmentation of projectile nuclei. Combining these complementary experimental techniques, the level scheme of $^{24}$F has been constructed up to 3.6 Mev by means of particle-$\gamma$ and particle-$\gamma\gamma$ coincidence relations. Experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations using the standard USDA and USDB interactions as well as ab-initio valence-space Hamiltonians calculated from the in-medium similarity renormalization group based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. Both methods reproduce the measured level spacings well, and this close agreement allows unidentified spins and parities to be consistently assigned., Comment: 5 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Giant resonances are collective excitation modes for many-body systems of fermions governed by a mean field, such as the atomic nuclei. The microscopic origin of such modes is the coherence among elementary particle-hole excitations, where a particle is promoted from an occupied state below the Fermi level (hole) to an empty one above the Fermi level (particle). The same coherence is also predicted for the particle–particle and the hole–hole excitations, because of the basic quantum symmetry between particles and holes. In nuclear physics, the giant modes have been widely reported for the particle–hole sector but, despite several attempts, there is no precedent in the particle–particle and hole–hole ones, thus making questionable the aforementioned symmetry assumption. Here we provide experimental indications of the Giant Pairing Vibration, which is the leading particle–particle giant mode. An immediate implication of it is the validation of the particle–hole symmetry., The Giant Pairing Vibration is a collective mode in an atomic nucleus caused by coherence between particle-particle excitations, which has so far eluded detection. Cappuzzello et al. present signatures for its existence via heavy-ion-induced two-neutron transfer reactions in carbon nuclei.

Abstract

The status of experimental approach to Sn-100 and Ni-78 is reviewed. Revised single particle energies for neutrons are deduced for the N=Z=50 shell closure and evidence for low lying I-pi=2(+) and 3(-) states is presented. Moderate E2 polarization charges of 0.1 e and 0.6 e are found to reproduce the experimental data when core excitation of Sn-100 is properly accounted for in the shell model. For the neutron rich Ni region no conclusive evidence for an N=40 subshell is found, whereas firm evidence for the persistence of the N=50 shell at Ni-78 is inferred from the existence of seniority isomers. The disappearance of this isomerism in the mid nug(9/2) shell is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The reaction 34S + 186W at Elab = 160 MeV was investigated with the aim of diving into the features of the fusion-fission process. Gamma rays coincident with binary reaction fragments were measured using the high efficiency gamma-ray spectrometer ORGAM at the TANDEM Accelerator facility of I.P.N., Orsay, and the time-of-flight spectrometer for fission fragments registration CORSET of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR), Dubna. Evidence of symmetric and asymmetric fission modes were observed in the mass and TKE distributions, occurring due to shell effects in the fragments. The coupling of the ORGAM and CORSET setups enables the FF-γ coincident measurement which offers the opportunity to extract the isotopic distribution of the fragments of different masses formed in the aforementioned reaction and to find the exact neutron multiplicity, the average spin and average angular momenta. Details regarding the experimental setup, methods of processing the acquisitioned data and preliminary results are presented.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/MUST2; International audience; We have measured the 72Zn(d, 3He) 71Cu proton pickup reaction in inverse kinematics at 38 MeV/u. A dedicated setup was developed to overcome the experimental challenges posed by the low cross section of the reaction and the low energy of the outgoing 3He particles. The excitation-energy spectrum was reconstructed and spectroscopic factors were obtained after analysis of the angular distributions in the finite-range Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). The results show that unlike for the πf5/2 orbital, the πf7/2 single-particle strength is not appreciably affected by the addition of neutrons beyond N = 40.

Abstract

The ${}^{12}$C(${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O)${}^{14}$C and ${}^{12,13}$C(${}^{18}$O,${}^{17}$O)${}^{13,14}$C reactions are studied at 84 MeV. Mass distributions and energy spectra of the ejectiles are measured, indicating the selectivity of these reactions to populate two- and one-neutron configurations in the states of the residual nucleus, respectively. The measured absolute cross-section angular distributions are analyzed by exact finite range coupled reaction channel calculations based on a parameter free double-folding optical potential. The form factors for the (${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O) reaction are extracted within an extreme cluster and independent particles scheme with shell-model-derived coupling strengths. The results show that the measured cross sections are accurately described for the first time without the need for any arbitrary scaling factor. The (${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O) reaction is thus found to be a powerful tool for quantitative spectroscopic studies of pair configurations in nuclear states.

International audience; The nuclear structure of 69Cu has been investigated by means of the (d,3He) transfer reaction at the Orsay tandem in direct kinematics using a deuteron beam at Ed = 27 MeV and a target of 70Zn isotopically enriched to 95.4%. The 3He of interest from the transfer reaction were detected with the split-pole spectrometer at different angles in the laboratory frame in order to perform angular distributions and assign the angular momentum for each populated state in 69Cu. In this paper, the transferred angular momenta of the populated states will be presented.

Abstract

The high-spin states of the two neutron-rich nuclei ${}^{88}$Kr${}_{52}$ and ${}^{89}$Rb${}_{52}$ have been studied from the ${}^{18}$O+${}^{208}$Pb fusion-fission reaction. Their level schemes were built from triple $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray coincidence data, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ angular correlations were analyzed in order to assign spin and parity values to most of the observed states. The two level schemes evolve from collective structures to single-particle excitations as a function of the excitation energy. Comparison with results of shell-model calculations gives the specific proton and neutron configurations which are involved to generate the angular momentum along the yrast lines.

Abstract

Odd-odd ${}^{136}$Cs nuclei have been produced in the ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}+{}^{208}$Pb and ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}+{}^{238}$U fusion-fission reactions and their $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays studied with the Euroball array. The high-spin level scheme was built up to $\ensuremath{\sim}$4.7 MeV excitation energy and spin $I\ensuremath{\sim}16\ensuremath{\hbar}$ from the triple $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray coincidence data. The configurations of the three structures observed above $\ensuremath{\sim}$2 MeV excitation energy are first discussed by analogy with the proton excitations identified in the semimagic ${}^{137}$Cs${}_{82}$ nucleus, which involve the three high-$j$ orbits lying above the $Z=50$ gap, $\ensuremath{\pi}{g}_{7/2}$, $\ensuremath{\pi}{d}_{5/2}$, and $\ensuremath{\pi}{h}_{11/2}$. This is confirmed by the results of shell-model calculations performed in this work.

International audience; The neutron decay of the resonant states of light neutron-rich nuclei is an important and poorly explored property, useful to extract valuable nuclear structure information. The neutron decay of the (15)C resonances populated via the two-neutron transfer reaction (13)C((18)O,(16)O n) at 84 MeV incident energy is studied using an innovative technique which couples the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer and the EDEN neutron detector array. The data show that the recently observed (15)C Giant Pairing Vibration at 13.7 MeV mainly decays via two-neutron emission.

Abstract

An experiment using the Eurogam phase II \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectrometer confirms the existence of an excited superdeformed (SD) band in $^{190}\mathrm{Hg}$ and its very unusual decay into the lowest SD band over 3--4 transitions. The energies of the transitions linking the two SD bands have been firmly established, and their angular distributions are consistent with a dipole character. Comparisons with calculations using random-phase approximation indicate that the excited SD band can be interpreted as an octupole-vibrational structure.

Abstract

Five $N=82$ isotones have been produced in two fusion-fission reactions and their $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays studied with the Euroball array. The high-spin states of ${}^{139}$La have been identified, while the high-spin yrast and near-to-yrast structures of the four others have been greatly extended. From angular correlation analysis, spin values have been assigned to some states of ${}^{136}$Xe and ${}^{137}$Cs. Several cascades involving $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays of ${}^{139}$La have been found to be delayed; they deexcite an isomeric state with ${T}_{1/2}=315(35)$ ns located at 1800 keV excitation energy. The excited states of these five $N=82$ isotones are expected to be due to various proton excitations involving the three high-$j$ subshells located above the $Z=50$ shell closure. This is confirmed by the results of shell-model calculations performed in this work. In addition, high-spin states corresponding to the excitation of the neutron core have been unambiguously identified in ${}^{136}$Xe, ${}^{137}$Cs, and ${}^{138}$Ba.

The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of Ge-76 at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2(1)(+) state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method with the Koln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) states in Zn-72,Zn-74 were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2(1)(+)-> 0(+)) = 385(39) and 370(33) e(2) fm(4), respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge, and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point toward a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete gamma-softness at N = 42.

Abstract

The ${}^{119--126}$Sn nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in two reactions induced by heavy ions: ${}^{12}\text{C}+{}^{238}\text{U}$ at a bombarding energy of 90 MeV and ${}^{18}\text{O}+{}^{208}\text{Pb}$ at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays detected using the Euroball array. High-spin states located above the long-lived isomeric states of the even- and odd-$A$ ${}^{120--126}$Sn nuclei have been identified. Moreover, isomeric states lying around 4.5 MeV have been established in ${}^{120,122,124,126}$Sn from the delayed coincidences between the fission fragment detector SAPhIR and the Euroball array. The states located above 3 MeV excitation energy are ascribed to several broken pairs of neutrons occupying the $\ensuremath{\nu}{h}_{11/2}$ orbit. The maximum value of angular momentum available in such a high-$j$ shell, i.e., for midoccupation and the breaking of the three neutron pairs, has been identified. This process is observed for the first time in spherical nuclei.

Abstract

The structure of the weakly-bound $^{26}_{\;\;9}$F$_{17}$ odd-odd nucleus, produced from $^{27,28}$Na nuclei, has been investigated at GANIL by means of the in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy technique. A single $\gamma$-line is observed at 657(7) keV in $^{26}_{9}$F which has been ascribed to the decay of the excited J=$2^+$ state to the J=1$^+$ ground state. Abstract

The heavy-ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV beam energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic, and one-nucleon transfer differential cross sections are measured and global agreement is obtained with semiclassical and distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations. In particular, the angular distribution of the 2+ state of 22Ne is analyzed by DWBA and a similar calculation is performed for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, using existing data from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). In both cases the DWBA model gives a good reproduction of the experiment, pointing to a strong reduction of the β2(C) charge deformation parameter in 24Ne. This follows the trend predicted for the evolution of the quadrupole deformation along the Ne isotopic chain.

Abstract

The cross section for the knock-out of a deeply bound valence neutron from ${}^{37}$Ca at an incident beam energy of $60A\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ has been measured along with momentum distributions of the residual nuclei and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays from the de-excitation of the first excited state in ${}^{36}$Ca. As for other cases of deeply bound nucleons studied using knock-out reactions, the reduction of the measured cross section compared to theoretical predictions is stronger than those observed for near-magic stable nuclei. Both the momentum distributions and the excitation energy of the first excited state in ${}^{36}$Ca indicate a sizable $N=16$ gap.

Abstract

The structure of the $^{44}$S nucleus has been studied at GANIL through the one proton knock-out reaction from a $^{45}$Cl secondary beam at 42 A$\cdot$MeV. The $\gamma$ rays following the de-excitation of $^{44}$S were detected in flight using the 70 BaF${_2}$ detectors of the Ch\^{a}teau de Cristal array. An exhaustive $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence analysis allowed an unambiguous construction of the level scheme up to an excitation energy of 3301 keV. The existence of the spherical 2$^+_2$ state is confirmed and three new $\gamma$-ray transitions connecting the prolate deformed 2$^+_1$ level were observed. Comparison of the experimental results to shell model calculations further supports a prolate and spherical shape coexistence with a large mixing of states built on the ground state band in $^{44}$S., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract

The192Hg nucleus was populated in the160Gd(36S, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of E=159 MeV. Emittedγ-rays were detected with the EUROGAM array comprising 43 Compton-suppressed large volume Ge detectors. The level scheme of192Hg has been extended up to an excitation energy of E=10.4 MeV and spin I=34 ħ. Two new structures, made of competing ΔI=1 and ΔI=2 transitions have been observed and their connexions with the low-lying levels established. Their lowest levels are located at 6.304 MeV and 6.879 MeV excitation energy. The experimental results are compared with mean-field HF+BCS calculations. It is proposed that the new structures originate from deformation-aligned quasi-proton excitations π(i13/2 * h9/2)K=11 andπ (h9/2) K=8 2 , coupled to rotation-aligned quasi-neutron ν(i13/2)n and quasi-proton π(h11/2)2 excitations.

Abstract

Two regular dipole gamma -ray cascades have been observed in 194Pb. A comprehensive level scheme related to these structures has been built and first members of rotational bands built on K=8 and K=11 two-proton oblate states have been identified. From the excitation energies, spin values, behaviours of the moments of inertia and alignments, and from the comparison with the isotone 192Hg, multiparticle configurations can be attributed to three high-spin structures of 194Pb built respectively on the 4966 keV, 4334 keV and 6198 keV levels: ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606))(vi13/2)2, ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606))(vf5/2vi13/2), ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606)) (vf5/2(vi13/2)3). Within this interpretation, the regular dipole bands correspond to the presence of two or three i13/2 decoupled neutrons.

Abstract

The ${}^{83,81}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction ${}^{18}$O + ${}^{208}$Pb at 85 MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Euroball array. Medium-spin states of ${}^{83,81}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As have been established up to $\ensuremath{\sim}3.5$ MeV excitation energy. From angular correlation analysis, spin values have been assigned to most of the ${}^{81}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As excited states. The behaviors of the yrast structures identified in this work are discussed in comparison with the general features known in the mass region. Then they are compared to the results of two theoretical approaches: the ``rotor + quasiparticle'' for ${}^{81}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As and the shell model using the effective interactions JUN45 for ${}^{83,81}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As.

Abstract

Yrast states in the neutron-rich S41 nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of S36 ions with a thin Pb208 target. The magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the γ-ray array, CLARA, were used in the measurements. γ-ray transitions of energy 449 and 638 keV were observed. Results from published intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation measurements in combination with those from the present work have led to the construction of a new S41 level scheme. Proposed Jπ values are based on experimental observation and on model-dependent arguments. The level scheme and published electromagnetic transition probabilities are discussed within the context of state-of-art shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U effective interaction. In contrast with the excellent agreement observed in earlier published work, here there are significant discrepancies between experiment and the results of shell-model calculations. © 2011 American Physical Society., Supported in part by the EPSRC (UK) and by the European Union under Contract No. RII3-CT- 2004-506065.
