Abstract

Proton radioactivity was discovered exactly 50 years ago. First, this nuclear decay mode sets the limit of existence on the nuclear landscape on the neutron-deficient side. Second, it comprises fundamental aspects of both quantum tunnelling as well as the coupling of (quasi)bound quantum states with the continuum in mesoscopic systems such as the atomic nucleus. Theoretical approaches can start either from bound-state nuclear shell-model theory or from resonance scattering. Thus, proton-radioactivity guides merging these types of theoretical approaches, which is of broader relevance for any few-body quantum system. Here, we report experimental measurements of proton-emission branches from an isomeric state in 54mNi, which were visualized in four dimensions in a newly developed detector. We show that these decays, which carry an unusually high angular momentum, ℓ = 5 and ℓ = 7, respectively, can be approximated theoretically with a potential model for the proton barrier penetration and a shell-model calculation for the overlap of the initial and final wave functions., Proton radioactivity is useful for studying nuclear structure. Here the authors report two proton emission branches from the 10+ state isomer of 54mNi by using a time projection chamber.

Abstract

We report here the results of a study of the $\beta$ decay of the proton-rich Ge isotopes, $^{60}$Ge and $^{62}$Ge, produced in an experiment at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We have improved our knowledge of the half-lives of $^{62}$Ge (73.5(1) ms), $^{60}$Ge (25.0(3) ms) and its daughter nucleus, $^{60}$Ga (69.4(2) ms). We measured individual $\beta$-delayed proton and $\gamma$ emissions and their related branching ratios. Decay schemes and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. A total $\beta$-delayed proton-emission branching ratio of 67(3)% has been obtained for $^{60}$Ge. New information has been obtained on the energy levels populated in $^{60}$Ga and on the 1/2$^-$ excited state in the $\beta p$ daughter $^{59}$Zn. We extracted a ground state to ground state feeding of 85.3(3)% for the decay of $^{62}$Ge. Eight new $\gamma$ lines have been added to the de-excitation of levels populated in the $^{62}$Ga daughter.

Abstract

16 pags., 9 figs., 7 tabs., In an experiment performed at the SPIRAL1 facility of GANIL, the β decay of Ar has been studied by means of the “Silicon Cube” device associated with germanium clover detectors from the EXOGAM array. Beta-delayed protons and γ rays have been observed and allowed the determination of all relevant decay branches. The Gamow–Teller strength distribution is compared to shell-model calculations and excellent agreement is found. The Fermi strength is inline with expectations. A quasi-complete decay scheme of Ar is established., This work was partly funded by the Conseil régional de la Nouvelle Aquitaine and the EU through the Human Capital and Mobility program. Abstract

We report on new γ-ray spectroscopy results from β decays of In99 and Sn101. 30 new γ rays were observed following the β decay of In99, and inconsistencies in the literature with respect to the γ rays following the β decay of Sn101 were addressed with two confirmed cases and two new transitions. The experimental γ-ray energies, intensities, and coincidence relationships are discussed with shell model calculations, where theoretical β-decay branching ratios from the parent nuclei and γ-ray cascades of excited states from the daughter nuclei were combined to generate hypothetical βγ spectra and βγγ coincidence matrices. The most intense β-delayed γ-ray branches in both Cd99 and In101 were well reproduced with this approach, and several γ rays were assigned to new excited states based on their good agreement with shell model predictions.

Abstract

We report first time measurements of the beta-neutrino angular correlation based on the kinetic energy shift of protons emitted in parallel or anti-parallel directions with respect to the positron in the beta decay of $^{32}$Ar. This proof of principle experiment provided simultaneous measurements for the superallowed 0$^+$~$\rightarrow$~0$^+$ transition followed by a 3356~keV proton emission and for a Gamow-Teller transition followed by a 2123~keV proton emission. The results, respectively ${\tilde a_{\beta\nu}}=1.01(3)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$ and ${\tilde a_{\beta\nu}}=-0.22(9)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$, are found in agreement with the Standard Model. A careful analysis of the data shows that future measurements can reach a precision level of 10$^{-3}$ for both pure Fermi and pure Gamow-Teller decay channels, providing new constraints on both scalar and tensor weak interactions.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the ISOLDE facility of CERN, the super-allowed $\beta $-decay branching ratio of $^{10}$C was determined with a high-precision single-crystal germanium detector. In order to evaluate the contribution of the pile-up of two 511 keV $\gamma $ quanta to one of the $\gamma $-ray peaks of interest at 1021.7 keV, data were not only taken with $^{10}$C, but also with a $^{19}$Ne beam. The final result for the super-allowed decay branch is 1.4638(50)%, in agreement with the average from literature. In an experiment performed at the ISOLDE facility of CERN, the super-allowed beta-decay branching ratio of 10C was determined with a high-precision single-crystal germanium detector. In order to evaluate the contribution of the pile-up of two 511 keV gamma quanta to one of the gamma-ray peaks of interest at 1021.7 keV, data were not only taken with 10C, but also with a 19Ne beam. The final result for the super-allowed decay branch is 1.4638(50)%, in agreement with the average from literature.

Abstract

12 pags., 11 figs., 2 tabs., The N= Z= 36 nucleus Kr has been studied by inelastic scattering at intermediate energies. Two targets, Be and Au, were used to extract the nuclear deformation length, δ, and the reduced E2 transition probability, B(E2). The previously unknown non-yrast 2 and 4 states as well as a new candidate for the octupole 3 state have been observed in the scattering on the Be target and placed in the level scheme based on γ- γ coincidences. The second 2 state was also observed in the scattering on the Au target and the B(E2;22+→01+) value could be determined for the first time. Analyzing the results in terms of a two-band mixing model shows clear evidence for a oblate-prolate shape coexistence and can be explained by a shape change from an oblate ground state to prolate deformed yrast band from the first 2 state. This interpretation is corroborated by beyond mean field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction., We would like to thank the RIKEN accelerator and BigRIPS teams for providing the high intensity beams. Abstract

International audience; Following work done in the energy region above 100 keV, the high-precision calibration of a co-axial high-purity germanium detector has been continued in the energy region below 100 keV. Some of the previous measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations have been repeated with higher statistics and a new source measurement with 169 Yb has been added. For the energy range from 40 keV to 100 keV, an absolute precision for the detection efficiency of ± 0.2% has been reached, as previously obtained for energies above 100 keV. The low-energy behaviour of the germanium detector was further scrutinised by studying the germanium X-ray escape probability for the detection of low-energy photons. In addition, one experimental point, a γ ray at 2168 keV from the decay of 38 K, has been included for the total-to-peak ratios agreeing well with simulations. The same γ ray was also added for the single- and double-escape probabilities. Finally, the long term stability of the efficiency of the germanium detector was investigated by regularly measuring the full-energy peak efficiency with a precisely calibrated 60 Co source and found to be perfectly stable over a period of 10 years.

Abstract

The design, realization and operation of a prototype or “demonstrator” version of an active target and time projection chamber (ACTAR TPC) for experiments in nuclear physics is presented in detail. The heart of the detection system features a micromegas gas amplifier coupled to a high-density pixelated pad plane with square pad sizes of 2 × 2 mm 2 . The detector has been thoroughly tested with several different gas mixtures over a wide range of pressures and using a variety of sources of ionizing radiation including laser light, an α -particle source and heavy-ion beams of 24Mg and 58Ni accelerated to energies of 4.0 MeV/u. Results from these tests and characterization of the detector response over a wide range of operating conditions will be described. These developments have served as the basis for the design of a larger detection system that is presently under construction.

Abstract

International audience; The General Electronics for TPCs (GET) has been developed to equip a generation of time projection chamber detectors for nuclear physics, and may also be used for a wider range of detector types. The goal of this paper is to propose first analysis procedures to be applied on raw data samples from the GET system, in order to correct for systematic effects observed on test measurements. We also present a method to estimate the response function of the GET system channels. The response function is required in analysis where the input signal needs to be reconstructed, in terms of time distribution, from the registered output samples.

Abstract

The production cross sections of neutron-rich fission residues in reactions induced by U238 projectiles at 950A MeV impinging on Pb and Be targets are investigated at the Fragment Separator at GSI. These two targets allow us to investigate fission processes induced by two reaction mechanisms, Coulomb and nuclear excitations, and to study the role of these mechanisms in the neutron excess of the final fragments. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Beta - neutrino correlation measurements are key in the research of physics beyond the Standard Model. In pure Fermi beta transitions, the beta-neutrino correlation coefficient, a βν, is sensitive to the presence of scalar currents. The present limits were established by experimental studies of various nuclear systems with allowed Fermi transitions. A new experiment to improve the constraints on scalar currents is being developed, by the WISArD collaboration at ISOLDE/CERN, where the aim is to measure the energy shift of the β-delayed protons emitted from the isobaric analogue state of the 32Ar ground state. To enhance the sensitivity, protons and positrons are guided by a strong magnetic field and measured in coincidence between the two detection configurations located on both sides of a catcher foil in which the radioactive samples are implanted. Kinematic energy shifts of the protons in coincidence with positrons, in the same or opposite hemisphere of the catcher foil, will be more or less pronounced as a function of the possible scalar current component of the weak interaction. Details of the apparatus and preliminary results of the experiment are presented.

Abstract

The proton-rich isotope 68Br was discovered in secondary fragmentation reactions of fast radioactive beams. Proton-rich secondary beams of 70,71,72Kr and 70Br, produced at the RIKEN Nishina Center and identified by the BigRIPS fragment separator, impinged on a secondary 9Be target. Unambiguous particle identification behind the secondary target was achieved with the ZeroDegree spectrometer. Based on the expected direct production cross sections from neighboring isotopes, the lifetime of the ground or long-lived isomeric state of 68Br was estimated. The results suggest that secondary fragmentation reactions, where relatively few nucleons are removed from the projectile, offer an alternative way to search for new isotopes, as these reactions populate preferentially low-lying states., Comment: Phys. International audience; A hybrid model is proposed which combines the nuclear structure part from configuration-interaction (CI) calculations and the emission dynamics from a three-body approach. By normalizing the partial half-lives from the three-body model with CI amplitudes, we can reasonably well reproduce all known experimental two-proton (2p) emission half-lives, except for Kr67. For the purpose of the present paper, the full body of experimental 2p radioactivity data for nuclei for which the half-life and the 2p emission branching ratio are experimentally known has been analyzed in our hybrid model.

Abstract

International audience; Neutron- and proton-removal cross sections for nuclei around ^132Sn have been systematically measured. The measurements clearly show the effect of the N = 82 closed shells. Model calculations describing all processes leading to single nucleon removal residual nuclei provide a reasonable description of the neutron removal process but clearly overestimate the proton removal ones. This overestimation of the proton removal channels could be explained as due to the presence of short-range correlated neutron-proton pairs in nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; The beta decay of the Tz=-2 nucleus 64Se has been studied in a fragmentation reaction at RIKEN-Nishina Center. 64Se is the heavies Tz=-2 nucleus that decays to bound states in the daughter nucleus and the heaviest case where the mirror reaction 64Zn(3He,t)64Ga on the Tz=+2 64Zn stable target exists and can be compared. Beta-delayed gamma and proton radiation is reported for the 64Se and 64As cases. New levels have been observed in 64As, 64Ge (N=Z), 63Ge and 63Ga. The associated T1/2 values have been obtained.

Abstract

Single-neutron and single-proton removal cross sections have been measured for medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei around Z=50 and energies around 1000A MeV using the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The measured cross sections confirm the relative low values of the proton-removal cross sections, observed since a long time ago and not yet understood. Model calculations considering the knock-out process together with initial- and final-state interactions describe the measured neutron-removal cross sections. Proton-removal cross sections are, however, significantly over-predicted by the same calculations. The observed difference can be explained to a large extent by the knock-out of short-range correlated nucleons from dominant neutron-proton pairs in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the observation of 67Kr that has been produced in an experiment performed at the RIKEN/BigRIPS facility. The two-proton decay of 67Kr has been evidenced and this nucleus is thus the fourth observed long lived ground-state two-proton emitter, after 45Fe, 48Ni and 54Zn. In addition, the decay of several isotopes in the mass region has been investigated. While for previous cases of two-proton radioactivity, the theoretical models could reproduce the measured data, this is not the case anymore for 67Kr. Two interpretations have been proposed to explain this discrepancy: a transition between real two-proton and sequential decay or the influence of deformation. These hypotheses will be tested in future experiments by measuring the angular and energy correlations of the emitted protons.

Abstract

Since 2001, the SPIRAL 1 facility has been one of the pioneering facilities in ISOL techniques for reaccelerating radioactive ion beams: the fragmentation of the heavy ion beams of GANIL on graphite targets and subsequent ionization in the Nanogan ECR ion source has permitted to deliver beams of gaseous elements (He, N, O, F, Ne, Ar, Kr) to numerous experiments. Thanks to the CIME cyclotron, energies up to 20 AMeV could be obtained. In 2014, the facility was stopped to undertake a major upgrade, with the aim to extend the production capabilities of SPIRAL 1 to a number of new elements. This upgrade, which is presently under commissioning, consists in the integration of an ECR booster in the SPIRAL 1 beam line to charge breed the beam of different 1+ sources. A FEBIAD source (the so-called VADIS from ISOLDE) was chosen to be the future workhorse for producing many metallic ion beams. The charge breeder is an upgraded version of the Phoenix booster which was previously tested in ISOLDE. The performances of the aforementioned ingredients of the upgrade (targets, 1+ source and charge breeder) have been and are still being optimized in the frame of different European projects (EMILIE, ENSAR and ENSAR2). The upgraded SPIRAL 1 facility will provide soon its first new beams for physics and further beam development are undertaken to prepare for the next AGATA campaign. Abstract

Excited states in the $T_z=-1$ nucleus $^{70}$Kr have been populated using inelastic scattering of a radioactive $^{70}$Kr beam as well as one- and two-neutron removal reactions from $^{71,72}$Kr at intermediate beam energies. The level scheme of $^{70}$Kr was constructed from the observed $\gamma$-ray transitions and coincidences. Tentative spin and parity assignments were made based on comparison with the mirror nucleus $^{70}$Se. A second $2^+$ state and a candidate for the corresponding $4^+_2$ state suggest shape coexistence in $^{70}$Kr., Comment: accepted Phys. Lett. B

Abstract

The systematic study of fission fragment yields under different initial conditions has provided valuable experimental data for benchmarking models of fission product yields. Nuclear reactions using inverse kinematics coupled to the use of a high-resolution spectrometer with good fragment identification are shown here to be a powerful tool to measure the inclusive isotopic yields of fission fragments. In-flight fusion-fission was used in this work to produce secondary beams of neutron-rich isotopes in the collisions of a 238U beam at 24 MeV/u with 9Be and 12C targets at GANIL using the LISE3 fragment separator. Unique identification of the A, Z, and atomic charge state, q, of fission products was attained with the $\Delta E$ -TKE-B $\rho$ -ToF measurement technique. Mass, and atomic number distributions are reported for the two reactions. The results show the importance of different reaction mechanisms in the two cases. The optimal target material for higher yields of neutron-rich high-Z isotopes produced in fusion-fission reactions as a function of projectile energy is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The β decays of the proton-rich, T z = −2 nuclei 48Fe, 52Ni and 56Zn were investigated by decay spectroscopy at GANIL. The decay schemes were determined, together with absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths. New interesting results were obtained, including the first observation of a new decay mode in the f p-shell, the exotic β- delayed γ-proton decay seen in 56Zn, and the first observation of the 2+ isomer in 52Co. These studies were complemented by Charge Exchange reactions on the stable mirror targets.

Abstract

The $\gamma$ -decay branching ratios of 49V have been studied in the $\beta$ /EC decay of 49Cr. The $\gamma$ -ray spectrum has been measured with a 70% relative efficiency co-axial germanium detector calibrated in efficiency with a precision of about 0.5%. The primary result is the measurement of the relative branching ratios of the three main $\gamma$ rays in the decay of 49Cr. Large discrepancies were found with a previous experimental work. The 49Cr sample was produced by proton impact on a ZrO2 target and collected at the ISOLDE facility of CERN and enabled us to re-evaluate the decay scheme of 49Cr. The new data allow the use of this nucleus for future high-precision calibration work.

Abstract

The half-life of $^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ was measured using a real-time digital multiparametric acquisition system, providing an accurate time stamp and relevant information on the detector signals for each decay event. An exhaustive offline analysis of the data gave unique access to experimental effects potentially biasing the measurement. After establishing the influence factors impacting the measurement such as after-pulses, pile-up, gain, and baseline fluctuations, their effects were accurately estimated and the event selection optimized. The resulting half-life, $17.2569\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{0019}_{(\text{stat})}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{0009}_{(\text{syst})}$ s, is the most precise up to now for $^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$. It is found to be in agreement with two recent precise measurements and not consistent with the most recent one [L. J. Broussard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 212301 (2014)] by 3.0 standard deviations. The full potential of the technique for nuclei with half-lives of a few seconds is discussed.

Abstract

The $\beta$ decay of the odd-odd nucleus $^{70}$Br has been investigated with the BigRIPS and EURICA setups at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The $T=0$ ($J^{\pi}=9^+$) and $T=1$ ($J^{\pi}=0^+$) isomers have both been produced in in-flight fragmentation of $^{78}$Kr with ratios of 41.6(8)\% and 58.4(8)\%, respectively. A half-life of $t_{1/2}=2157^{+53}_{-49}$ ms has been measured for the $J^{\pi}=9^+$ isomer from $\gamma$-ray time decay analysis. Based on this result, we provide a new value of the half-life for the $J^{\pi}=0^+$ ground state of $^{70}$Br, $t_{1/2}=78.42\pm0.51$ ms, which is slightly more precise, and in excellent agreement, with the best measurement reported hitherto in the literature. For this decay, we provide the first estimate of the total branching fraction decaying through the $2^+_1$ state in the daughter nucleus $^{70}$Se, $R(2^+_1)=1.3\pm1.1\%$. We also report four new low-intensity $\gamma$-ray transitions at 661, 1103, 1561, and 1749 keV following the $\beta$ decay of the $J^{\pi}=9^+$ isomer. Based on their coincidence relationships, we tentatively propose two new excited states at 3945 and 4752 keV in $^{70}$Se with most probable spins and parities of $J^{\pi}=(6^+)$ and $(8^+)$, respectively. The observed structure is interpreted with the help of shell-model calculations, which predict a complex interplay between oblate and prolate configurations at low excitation energies.

Abstract

We have measured the $ \beta$ -decay half-lives of 16 neutron-deficient nuclei with $ T_{z} = -1/2$ and -1 , ranging from chromium to germanium. They were produced in an experiment carried out at GANIL and optimized for the production of$^{58}$Zn , for which in addition we present the decay scheme and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths. Since all of these nuclei lie on the rp -process pathway, the $ T_{1/2}$ values are important ingredients for the rp -process reaction flow calculations and for models of X-ray bursters.

Abstract

Half-lives and branching ratios for the two mirror $ \beta$ decays of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si have been measured at the University of Jyvaskyla with the IGISOL facility. The results obtained, $ T_{1/2}=11.303(3)$ s and $ T_{1/2}= 4.112(2)$ s for the half-lives of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si , respectively, are 7 and 8 times more precise than the averages of previous measurements. The values obtained for the super-allowed branching ratios of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si are $ B.R.=92.18(8)\%$ and $ B.R.=99.74(2)\%$ , respectively. The result for$^{23}$Mg is three times more precise than the average of the previous measurements, while for$^{27}$Si the precision has not been improved, the average of the previous measurements being already very precise. Isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections have been calculated for the two nuclei to determine the corrected $ {F}t$ value.

All models more or less overestimate the experimental cross sections. We found reasonable agreement by using the geometrical average of the five model calculations and dividing the average by a factor of 11.2. Abstract

International audience; We present a general scheme of a shell-model analysis of a β-delayed proton emission. We show that the experimental proton to γ-ray branching ratio for the isobaric analog state (IAS) populated in β decay of a precursor, supplemented by theoretical proton and γ-ray widths, can be used to extract spectroscopic factors for isospin-forbidden proton emission. In the case of a well-justified two-level mixing approximation and a relatively well known spectroscopic factor of the admixed state, the proposed scheme provides a new way to determine the amount of the isospin mixing in the IAS. This conjecture is illustrated by the theoretical analysis of Cr44 and Fe48 decay.

Abstract

DESIR (Desintegration, excitation et stockage des ions radioactifs, i.e. decay, excitation and storage of radioactive ions) will form the experimental area exploiting low-energy beams of the next-generation radioactive beam facility SPIRAL2 at GANIL, presently under construction. In addition to beams from the SPIRAL2 production building, DESIR will also receive beams from the separator-spectrometer S 3 and from the SPIRAL1 facility. In the following, the DESIR facility and its instrumentation related to Penning trap based mass spectrometry and trap-assisted decay spectroscopy are introduced. The related envisaged experimental program is outlined.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the ${2}^{+}$ isomer in $^{52}\mathrm{Co}$, produced in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of the ${0}^{+}$, $^{52}\mathrm{Ni}$ ground state. We have observed three $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays at 849, 1910, and 5185 keV characterizing the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ de-excitation of the isomer. We have measured a half-life of 102(6) ms for the isomeric state. The Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths for the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{52m}\mathrm{Co}$ to $^{52}\mathrm{Fe}$ have been determined. We also add new information on the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of the ${6}^{+}$, $^{52}\mathrm{Co}$ ground state, for which we have measured a half-life of 112(3) ms.

Abstract

In an experiment with the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center, we observed two-proton (2p) emission from 67Kr. At the same time, no evidence for 2p emission of 59Ge and 63Se, two other potential candidates for this exotic radioactivity, could be observed. This observation is in line with Q value predictions which pointed to 67Kr as being the best new candidate among the three for two-proton radioactivity. 67Kr is only the fourth 2p ground-state emitter to be observed with a half-life of the order of a few milliseconds. The decay energy was determined to be 1690(17) keV, the 2p emission branching ratio is 37(14)%, and the half-life of 67Kr is 7.4(30) ms.

International audience; We have performed a series of beta-decay experiments at fragmentation facilities on T$_z$ = −1/2, T$_z$ = −1, and T$_z$ = −2 nuclei. Most of these nuclei lie on the rp-process path and therefore some of the quantities we have measured such as T$_{1/2}$ values are important ingredients in performing reaction flow calculations for light curve estimates and testing astrophysical models of X-ray bursters. At this conference we have presented the results of measurements of T$_{1/2}$ values for 25 nuclei and compared with previous values.

Abstract

In an experiment with the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center, the fragmentation of a $^{78}$Kr beam allowed the observation of new neutron-deficient isotopes at the proton drip-line. Clean identification spectra could be produced and $^{63}$Se, $^{67}$Kr, and $^{68}$Kr were identified for the first time. In addition, $^{59}$Ge was also observed. Three of these isotopes, $^{59}$Ge, $^{63}$Se, and $^{67}$Kr, are potential candidates for ground-state two-proton radioactivity. In addition, the isotopes $^{58}$Ge, $^{62}$Se, and $^{66}$Kr were also sought but without success. The present experiment also allowed the determination of production cross sections for some of the most exotic isotopes. These measurements confirm the trend already observed that the empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, significantly overestimates experimental cross sections in this mass region., accepted as Rapid Communication in PRC

Abstract

The results of a study of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays of three proton-rich nuclei with ${T}_{z}=\ensuremath{-}2$, namely $^{48}\mathrm{Fe},^{52}\mathrm{Ni}$, and $^{56}\mathrm{Zn}$, produced in an experiment carried out at GANIL, are reported. In all three cases we have extracted the half-lives and the total $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed proton emission branching ratios. We have measured the individual $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed protons and $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays and the branching ratios of the corresponding levels. Decay schemes have been determined for the three nuclei, and new energy levels are identified in the daughter nuclei. Competition between $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed protons and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays is observed in the de-excitation of the $T=2$ isobaric analog states in all three cases. Absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. In addition, we discuss in detail the data analysis taking as a test case $^{56}\mathrm{Zn}$, where the exotic $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-proton decay has been observed.

Abstract

Several new isotopes, ^{96}In, ^{94}Cd, ^{92}Ag, and ^{90}Pd, have been identified at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The study of proton drip-line nuclei in the vicinity of ^{100}Sn led to the discovery of new proton emitters ^{93}Ag and ^{89}Rh with half-lives in the submicrosecond range. The systematics of the half-lives of odd-Z nuclei with T_{z}=-1/2 toward ^{99}Sn shows a stabilizing effect of the Z=50 shell closure. Production cross sections for nuclei in the vicinity of ^{100}Sn measured at different energies and target thicknesses were compared to the cross sections calculated by epax taking into account contributions of secondary reactions in the primary target.

Abstract

The fragmentation of neutron-rich Sn 132 nuclei produced in the fission of U 238 projectiles at 950 A MeV has been investigated at the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This work represents the first investigation of fragmentation of medium-mass radioactive projectiles with a large neutron excess. The measured production cross sections of the residual nuclei are relevant for the possible use of a two-stage reaction scheme (fission + fragmentation) for the production of extremely neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei in future rare-ion-beam facilities. Moreover, the new data will provide a better understanding of the “memory” effect in fragmentation reactions.

Abstract

International audience; As one of the fashionable techniques for nuclear spectroscopy experiments, the beam manipulation in gas-filled Penning traps permits the accurate measurement of some of the ground state properties of exotic nuclides. It was recently applied using REXTRAP for the measurement of the half-life of 38Ca, one of the 0+ → 0+ β-decaying nuclide of interest for the determination of the Ft value for super-allowed transitions, and the test of the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The experimental setup and the original method of beam purification adopted for this measurement is presented.

Abstract

In a series of experiments at the SISSI/LISE3 facility of GANIL conducted between 1999 and 2004, we have collected decay information for proton-rich nuclei between {sup 36}Ca and {sup 56}Zn. The data allowed us to study the decay properties of 26 nuclei. The main experimental information obtained for all nuclei is their {beta}-decay half-life and their total {beta}-delayed proton emission branching ratio. For many nuclei, individual proton groups and {gamma} rays were identified and allowed us to establish first partial decay schemes for some of the nuclei studied. In addition, mass-excess values have been determined for some of the nuclei by means of the isobaric multiplet mass equation. For {sup 50}Ni, the decay via {beta}-delayed two-proton emission could be tentatively identified. The decay of {sup 49}Ni allowed for the first time to identify the first 2{sup +} state in {sup 48}Fe. The experimental data are confronted to model predictions for the half-life and the mass-excess values.

Abstract

The preliminary results from the RISING Stopped Beam Isomer Campaign are presented, with specific focus on results of the initial experiment to investigate isomeric decays along the N=Z line around A similar to 80-90 following the projectile fragmentation of a Ag-107 primary beam at an energy of 750 MeV per nucleon. A description of the technical aspects behind the design of the RISING array is presented, together with evidence for previously unreported isomeric decays in Tc-87,Tc-88 and the N=Z nuclei Nb-82(41) and Tc-86(43).

Abstract

In an experiment at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we have studied with high precision the $0^{+}\rightarrow 0^{+}$ $ \beta$ decay of 38Ca. The LISE3 facility allowed to produce close to pure samples of the nuclide of interest. We measured the half-life of this nucleus to be 443.63(35)ms, whereas the super-allowed branching ratio was determined to be 77.14(35)%. Both data are in nice agreement with previous high-precision measurements and thus improve the overall precision of the experimental inputs to determine the corrected $F t$ value for this nucleus. We also compare the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution with theoretical shell-model predictions. Finally, future opportunities at LISE3 are discussed.

Abstract

Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Advances in Radioactive Isotope Science ARIS2014. 6 pages, 4 figures; International audience; A very exotic decay mode at the proton drip-line, $\beta$-delayed $\gamma$-proton decay, has been observed in the $\beta$ decay of the $T_z$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn. Three $\gamma$-proton sequences have been observed following the $\beta$ decay. The fragmentation of the IAS in $^{56}$Cu has also been observed for the first time. The results were reported in a recent publication. At the time of publication the authors were puzzled by the competition between proton and $\gamma$ decays from the main component of the IAS. Here we outline a possible explanation based on the nuclear structure properties of the three nuclei involved, namely $^{56}$Zn, $^{56}$Cu and $^{55}$Ni, close to the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. From the fragmentation of the Fermi strength and the excitation energy of the two populated 0$^{+}$ states we could deduce the off-diagonal matrix element of the charge-dependent part of the Hamiltonian responsible for the mixing. These results are compared with the decay of $^{55}$Cu with one proton less than $^{56}$Zn. For completeness we summarise the results already published.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we studied the decay of 22Al produced by the fragmentation of a 36Ar primary beam. A β-decay half-life of T1/2 = 91.1±0.5ms was measured. The β-delayed one- and two-proton emission as well as β-α and β-delayed γ-decays were measured and allowed us to establish a partial decay scheme for this nucleus. New levels were determined in the daughter nucleus 22Mg. The comparison with model calculations strongly favours a spin-parity of Iπ = 4+ for the ground state of 22Al.

Abstract

The projectile fragmentation of a 92 Mo beam onto a beryllium target at an incident energy of 500 A MeV has been studied at the high-resolution spectrometer FRS at GSI. The isotopic production cross-sections of the projectile fragments produced in the reaction have been determined. The data have been compared to the empirical parameterisation, EPAX, and to a microscopic nuclear reaction model, ABRABLA.

Abstract

A study of the $\beta$ decay of the proton-rich $T_{z}$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn has been reported in a recent publication. A rare and exotic decay mode, $\beta$-delayed $\gamma$-proton decay, has been observed there for the first time in the $fp$ shell.
