The photochemistry of metal-organic compounds in solution is determined by both intra- and inter-molecular relaxation processes after photoexcitation. Understanding its prime mechanisms is crucial to optimise the reactive paths and control their outcome. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of aqueous ferrioxalate ([Fe-III(C2O4)(3)](3-)) upon 263 nm excitation using ultrafast liquid phase photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The initial step is found to be a ligand-to-metal electron transfer, occuring on a time scale faster than our time resolution (less than or similar to 30 fs). Furthermore, we observe that about 25% of the initially formed ferrous species population are lost in similar to 2 ps. Here, we report the development of a novel photoactive biomolecular nanoarchitecture based on the genetically engineered extremophilic photosystem I (PSI) biophotocatalyst interfaced with a single layer graphene via pyrene-nitrilotriacetic acid self-assembled monolayer (SAM). For the oriented and stable immobilization of the PSI biophotocatalyst, an His6-tag was genetically engineered at the N-terminus of the stromal PsaD subunit of PSI, allowing for the preferential binding of this photoactive complex with its reducing side towards the graphene monolayer. This approach yielded a novel robust and ordered nanoarchitecture designed to generate an efficient direct electron transfer pathway between graphene, the metal redox center in the organic SAM and the photo-oxidized PSI biocatalyst. The nanosystem yielded an overall current output of 16.5 µA·cm−2 for the nickel- and 17.3 µA·cm−2 for the cobalt-based nanoassemblies, and was stable for at least 1 h of continuous standard illumination. The novel green nanosystem described in this work carries the high potential for future applications due to its robustness, highly ordered and simple architecture characterized by the high biophotocatalyst loading as well as simplicity of manufacturing.

Significance To perform their specific electron-transfer relay functions, hemes commonly adopt low spin states with fine-tuned redox potentials. Understanding molecular elements controlling these properties is crucial for the description of natural proteins and engineering redox-active systems. We describe unusual effects of mitochondrial disease-related mutation in cytochrome bc1, based on which we identify a dual role of hydrogen bonding to the propionate group of heme bH. We observe that stabilization of the hydrogen bond in mutant enhances the redox potential but destabilizes the low spin state of oxidized heme. This demonstrates a critical role of the hydrogen bonding, and heme-protein interactions in general, to secure a suitable redox potential and spin state, a notion that might be universal for other heme proteins., Hemes are common elements of biological redox cofactor chains involved in rapid electron transfer. While the redox properties of hemes and the stability of the spin state are recognized as key determinants of their function, understanding the molecular basis of control of these properties is challenging. Here, benefiting from the effects of one mitochondrial disease–related point mutation in cytochrome b, we identify a dual role of hydrogen bonding (H-bond) to the propionate group of heme bH of cytochrome bc1, a common component of energy-conserving systems. We found that replacing conserved glycine with serine in the vicinity of heme bH caused stabilization of this bond, which not only increased the redox potential of the heme but also induced structural and energetic changes in interactions between Fe ion and axial histidine ligands. The latter led to a reversible spin conversion of the oxidized Fe from 1/2 to 5/2, an effect that potentially reduces the electron transfer rate between the heme and its redox partners. We thus propose that H-bond to the propionate group and heme-protein packing contribute to the fine-tuning of the redox potential of heme and maintaining its proper spin state. A subtle balance is needed between these two contributions: While increasing the H-bond stability raises the heme potential, the extent of increase must be limited to maintain the low spin and diamagnetic form of heme. This principle might apply to other native heme proteins and can be exploited in engineering of artificial heme-containing protein maquettes.

Continuous photolysis experiments and transient absorption spectroscopy were performed in combination with other techniques including HRTEM, XPS, Raman, TGA, and ESR spectroscopy, to investigate the role of residual metals and amorphous carbon on the photochemical process taking place after 350–355 nm light irradiation of as obtained commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes, denoted as pCNT. The results indicate that 350–355 nm photolysis of pCNT leads to the oxidation of surface oxygen-containing groups and defects which in turn are eliminated leading to more graphitic –like multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Residual metal catalysts and oxygen containing amorphous carbon and oxidized C-functionalities of MWCNT play an important role in the generation of MWCNT photoinduced charge-separated states. The process of 350 nm excitation of pCNT leads to exciton formation followed by hole transfer to metal oxides and further oxidation of C-O functionalities. A plausible mechanism explaining the elimination of oxidized groups attached to pCNT graphene walls and amorphous carbon and leading to more graphite-like CNTs is discussed. The vast compositional space of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), formula A(x)M[M'(CN)(6)](y)center dot nH(2)O, allows for a diverse range of functionality. Yet, the interplay between composition and physical properties-e.g., flexibility and propensity for phase transitions-is still largely unknown, despite its fundamental and industrial relevance. Here we use variable-pressure X-ray and neutron diffraction to explore how key structural features, i.e., defects, hydration, and composition, influence the compressibility and phase behavior of PBAs. Defects enhance the flexibility, manifesting as a remarkably low bulk modulus (B-0 approximate to 6 GPa) for defective PBAs. Interstitial water increases B-0 and enables a pressure-induced phase transition in defective systems. Conversely, hydration does not alter the compressibility of stoichiometric MnPt(CN)(6), but changes the high-pressure phase transitions, suggesting an interplay between low-energy distortions. AMnCo(CN)(6) (A(I) = Rb, Cs) transition from F (4) over bar 3m to P (4) over bar n2 upon compression due to octahedral tilting, and the critical pressure can be tuned by the A-site cation. At 1 GPa, the symmetry of Rb0.87Mn[Co(CN)(6)](0.91) is further lowered to the polar space group Pn by an improper ferroelectric mechanism. These fundamental insights aim to facilitate the rational design of PBAs for applications within a wide range of fields.

Understanding chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS), resulting from chargetransport through helical systems, has recently inspired many experimental and theoreticalefforts but is still the object of intense debate. In order to assess the nature of CISS, wepropose to focus on electron-transfer processes occurring at the single-molecule level. Wedesign simple magnetic resonance experiments, exploiting a qubit as a highly sensitive andcoherent magnetic sensor, to provide clear signatures of the acceptor polarization. Moreover,we show that information could even be obtained from time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance experiments on a randomly oriented solution of molecules. The proposedexperiments will unveil the role of chiral linkers in electron transfer and could also beexploited for quantum computing applications.

Different perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (abbreviated as perylenebisimides, or simply PBI) compounds (MT-PBI, DT-PBI, MP-PBI and DP-PBI) with thienyl and phenyl substituents at the bay position were prepared to study the effect of substitution on the photophysical properties, especially the intersystem crossing (ISC) efficacy. We found that the derivative with a monothienyl substituent (MT-PBI) shows efficient ISC (singlet oxygen quantum yield ΦΔ = 72%) and longer triplet state lifetime (τT = 64.4 μs) as compared to reference compounds (derivative with monophenyl substituent at bay position, MP-PBI, ΦΔ = 23% and τT = 48.5 μs). Theoretical computations reveal that the ISC efficiency is dependent on the magnitude of the spin orbit couplings (SOC) between the singlet and triplet excited states, and the SOC matrix element is up to 2 cm−1 for compound showing the highest ISC efficiency. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show the ISC rate constant of 8 × 109 s−1 for MT-PBI, and no charge transfer exists. Photo-driven electron transfer was observed with the PBI derivatives in the presence of sacrificial electron donor triethanolamine (TEOA), and reversible formation of PBI radical anion (PBI−•) was observed, which shows absorption in the range of 600 nm–800 nm and 900 nm–1000 nm. Delayed fluorescence (P-type) in MT-PBI was also observed (τT = 31.0 μs). These finding are useful for the design of PBI-derived heavy atom-free compounds to be used as triplet photosensitizers.

Certain pairs of paramagnetic species generated under conservation of total spin angular momentum are known to undergo magnetosensitive processes. Two prominent examples of systems exhibiting these so-called magnetic field effects (MFEs) are photogenerated radical pairs created from either singlet or triplet molecular precursors, and pairs of triplet states generated by singlet fission. Here, we showcase confocal microscopy as a powerful technique for the investigation of such phenomena. We first characterise the instrument by studying the field-sensitive chemistry of two systems in solution: radical pairs formed in a cryptochrome protein and the flavin mononucleotide/hen egg-white lysozyme model system. We then extend these studies to single crystals. Firstly, we report temporally and spatially resolved MFEs in flavin-doped lysozyme single crystals. Anisotropic magnetic field effects are then reported in tetracene single crystals. Finally, we discuss the future applications of confocal microscopy for the study of magnetosensitive processes with a particular focus on the cryptochrome-based chemical compass believed to lie at the heart of animal magnetoreception., Confocal microscopy is showcased as a powerful technique for the measurement of spatiotemporally-resolved magnetic field effects in both solutions and single crystals.

Redox reactions between polyoxometalates (POMs) and biologically relevant molecules have been virtually unexplored but are important, considering the growing interest in the biological applications of POMs. In this work we give a detailed account on the redox behavior of CeIV-substituted polyoxometalates (CeIV-POMs) toward a range of amino acids and peptides. CeIV-POMs have been shown to act as artificial proteases that promote the selective hydrolysis of peptide bonds. In presence of a protein, a concomitant reduction of CeIV to CeIII ion is frequently observed, leading us to examine the origins of this redox reaction by first using amino acid building blocks as simple models. Among all of the examined amino acids, cysteine (Cys) showed the highest activity in reducing CeIV-POMs to CeIII-POMs, followed by the aromatic amino acids tryptophan (Trp), tyrosine (Tyr), histidine (His), and phenylalanine (Phe). While the redox reaction with Cys afforded the well-defined product cystine, no oxidation products were detected for the Trp, His, Tyr, and Phe amino acids after their reaction with CeIV-POMs, suggesting a radical pathway in which the solvent likely regenerates the amino acid. In general, the rate of redox reactions increased upon increasing the pD, temperature, and ionic strength of the reaction. Moreover, the redox reaction is highly sensitive to the type of polyoxometalate scaffold, as complexation of CeIV to a Keggin (K) or Wells-Dawson (WD) polyoxotungstate anion resulted in a large difference in the rate of redox reaction for both Cys and aromatic amino acids. The reduction of CeIVK was at least 1 order of magnitude faster in comparison to CeIVWD, in accordance with the higher redox potential of CeIVK in comparison to CeIVWD. The reaction of CeIVPOMs with a range of peptides containing redox-active amino acids revealed that the redox reaction is influenced by their coordination mode with CeIV ion, but in all examined peptides the redox reaction is favored in comparison to the hydrolytic cleavage of the peptide bond. ispartof: INORGANIC CHEMISTRY vol:59 issue:15 pages:10569-10577 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Photosynthesis is regulated by a dynamic interplay between proteins, enzymes, pigments, lipids, and cofactors that takes place on a large spatio-temporal scale. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide a powerful toolkit to investigate dynamical processes in (bio)molecular ensembles from the (sub)picosecond to the (sub)millisecond regime and from the Å to hundreds of nm length scale. Therefore, MD is well suited to address a variety of questions arising in the field of photosynthesis research. In this review, we provide an introduction to the basic concepts of MD simulations, at atomistic and coarse-grained level of resolution. Furthermore, we discuss applications of MD simulations to model photosynthetic systems of different sizes and complexity and their connection to experimental observables. Finally, we provide a brief glance on which methods provide opportunities to capture phenomena beyond the applicability of classical MD.

Electrocatalysis is a promising tool for utilizing carbon dioxide as a feedstock in the chemical industry. However, controlling the selectivity for different CO2 reduction products remains a major challenge. We report a series of manganese carbonyl complexes with elaborated bipyridine or phenanthroline ligands that can reduce CO2 to either formic acid, if the ligand structure contains strategically positioned tertiary amines, or CO, if the amine groups are absent in the ligand or are placed far from the metal center. The amine-modified complexes are benchmarked to be among the most active catalysts for reducing CO2 to formic acid, with a maximum turnover frequency of up to 5500 s-1 at an overpotential of 630 mV. The conversion even works at overpotentials as low as 300 mV, although through an alternative mechanism. Mechanistically, the formation of a Mn-hydride species aided by in situ protonated amine groups was determined to be a key intermediate by cyclic voltammetry, 1H NMR, DFT calculations, and infrared spectroelectrochemistry.

Transparent photocatalytic TiO2 thin films hold great potential in the development of self-cleaning glass surfaces, but suffer from a poor visible light response that hinders the application under actual sunlight. To alleviate this problem, the photocatalytic film can be modified with plasmonic nanoparticles that interact very effectively with visible light. Since the plasmonic effect is strongly concentrated in the near surroundings of the nanoparticle surface, an approach is presented to embed the plasmonic nanostructures in the TiO2 matrix itself, rather than deposit them loosely on the surface. This way the interaction interface is maximised and the plasmonic effect can be fully exploited. In this study, pre-fabricated gold nanoparticles are made compatible with the organic medium of a TiO2 sol-gel coating suspension, resulting in a one-pot coating suspension. After spin coating, homogeneous, smooth, highly transparent and photoactive gold-embedded anatase thin films are obtained.

Optical pump-probe spectroscopy is a crucial tool to investigate the excited state behaviour of materials and is especially useful to investigate the photoexcitation dynamics of bulk heterojunctions as found in organic solar cells. Most common techniques for such investigations involve pulses with an energy density in the range of several tens of J cm(-2), emitted with kHz repetition rate. Such pulse energy can entail non-linear processes due to the formation of high carrier concentrations and can furthermore severely damage the sample material. Here we introduce a softer approach with pulses of nJ cm(-2) energy density and a photon flux which is more than three orders of magnitude lower than in regular techniques. We show the capability of our low-cost and easy to make set-up by investigating two prototypical donor-acceptor polymers, C-PCPDTBT and its silicon variant Si-PCPDTBT. Given the high pulse repetition rate in the MHz regime, we are readily able to monitor sample changes of 10(-5) and find exciton lifetimes of 108 and 150 ps for C- and Si-PCPDTBT respectively.

Time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and computational analysis of D-pi-A complexes comprising Fe-II donors and Ti-IV acceptors with the general formula (Cp2Ti)-Cp-R(C(2)Fc)(2) (where RCp = Cp*, Cp, and Cp-MeOOC) and (Cp2Ti)-Cp-TMS(C(2)Fc)(C2R) (where R = Ph or CF3) are reported. The transient absorption spectra are consistent with an Fe-III/Ti-III metal-to-metal charge-transfer (MMCT) excited state for all complexes. Thus, excited-state decay is assigned to back-electron transfer (BET), the lifetime of which ranges from 18.8 to 41 ps. Though spectroscopic analysis suggests BET should fall into the Marcus inverted regime, the observed kinetics are not consistent with this assertion. TDDFT calculations reveal that the singlet metal-to-metal charge-transfer ((MMCT)-M-1) excited state for the Fe-II/Ti-IV complexes is not purely MMCT in nature but is contaminated with the higher-energy (1)Fc (d-d) state. For the diferrocenyl complexes, (Cp2Ti)-Cp-R(C(2)Fc)(2), the ratio of MMCT to Fc centered character ranges from 57:43 for the Cp* complex to 85:15 for the Cp-MeOOC complex. For the diferrocenyl and monoferrocenyl complexes investigated herein, the excited-state lifetimes decrease with increased (1)Fc character. The effect of Cu-I coordination was also analyzed by time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and reveals the elongation of the excited-state lifetime by 3 orders of magnitude to 63 ns. The transient spectra and TDDFT analysis suggest that the long-lived excited state in Cp2Ti(C(2)Fc)(2).CuX (where X is Cl or Br) is a triplet iron species with an electron arrangement of Ti-IV-Fe-3(II)-Cu-I.

Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and isotactic polypropylene (iPP) are highly incompatible and consequently their uncompatibilized blends are quite brittle regardless of the molecular weights and ductility of the individual components. Isotactic polypropylene-polystyrene block copolymers, to be applied as compatibilizers for a broad range of PPO/iPP blend compositions, were prepared by mechanism transformation from coordination polymerization (iPP) to Activators Regenerated by Electron Transfer (ARGET) Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of styrene. The effect of the block copolymer composition and loading on the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the blends was studied. The addition of compatibilizer resulted in significant decreased domain size of the dispersed phase and improved mechanical properties. An unexpected phenomenon was observed for some compatibilized iPP-rich blends with only 20% PPO, which were characterized by an even higher impact resistance than that of pure PPO. Herein, we report an unprecedented mixed-valence crystal superstructure that consists of a 2:1 host–guest complex [MV⊂(CBPQT)_2]^(2/3+) [MV = methyl viologen, CBPQT = cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)]. One electron is distributed statistically between three [MV⊂(CBPQT)_2]•+ composed of a total of 15 viologen units. The mixed-valence state is validated by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, which supports an empirical formula of [MV⊂(CBPQT)_2]_3·(PF_6)_2 for the body-centered cubic superstructure. Electron paramagnetic resonance provides further evidence of electron delocalization. Quantum chemistry calculations confirm the mixed-valence state in the crystal superstructure. Our findings demonstrate that precise tuning of the redox states in host–guest systems can lead to a promising supramolecular strategy for achieving long-range electron delocalization in solid-state devices.

A mechanism based on the sequential absorption of two photons by the components of a redox couple has been recently proposed for catalysis of the energetically demanding reduction of aryl halides. Here, we analyze the suggested photochemical mechanism of this reaction, which employs perylenediimide (PDI) as a photocatalyst, on the basis of spectroscopic, electrochemical and electron paramagnetic resonance data. Our results indicate that the photoexcited PDI radical anion (*PDI˙−) cannot play the role of a photosensitizer in the aforementioned process. Instead, the reduction of 4′-bromoacetophenone likely involves *PDI˙− decomposition products. The extremely short lifetime of the photoexcited transient species, as *PDI˙−, is a major general limitation for photocatalytic schemes based on sequential two-photon excitation. In order to better understand the potential of such schemes, we discuss them in the context of the Z-scheme in natural photosynthesis.

In this study, multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were electrochemically modified with nitrogen and phosphorus species and employed as platform to immobilize pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) for the fabrication of bioelectrodes for glucose detection. Depending on the upper potential limit used during the electrochemical modification of MWCNTs, the nature and amount of the nitrogen and phosphorus species incorporated in the carbon material surface can be selectively controlled. These species act as anchoring groups for the immobilization of the PQQ-GDH. The value of the upper potential limit used in the electrochemical modification influences the electron-transfer rate between the electrode and the enzyme. The performance of the bioelectrodes for glucose oxidation and detection is improved by the electrochemical modification conditions, leading to an increased sensitivity towards glucose oxidation from 39.2 to 53.6 mA gMWCNT−1 mM−1 in a linear range between 0.1 to 1.2 mM. This electrochemical modification is considered as an alternative for the preparation of highly sensitive glucose bioelectrodes. The deposition of perylene diimide-based aggregates (PDI) onto wide band gap n-type Sb-doped SnO2 (ATO) was investigated with the aim of finding efficient and versatile dye-sensitized platforms :for photoelectrochemical solar fuel generation. These ATO-PDI photoanodes displayed hydrolytic stability in a wide range of pH (from 1 to 13) and revealed superior perforthances (up to 1 mA/cm(2) net photocurrent at 1 V vs SCE) compared to both WO3-PDI and: undoped SnO2-PDI when used in a photoelectrochemical setup for HBr splitting. Although ATO, SnO2, and WO3 are endowed with similar conduction band edge energetics, in ATO the presence-of a:significant density of intrabandgap states, whose occupancy Varies with the applied potential, plays a substantial role in tuning the efficiency of photoinduced charge separation and collection. Furthermore, the investigation of the charge injection kinetics confirmed that, even in the absence of applied bias, ATO and WO3 are the best substrates for the-oxidative quenching of poorly reducing PDI excited states, with at least a fraction of them injecting within

We report an efficient molecular light-driven system to oxidize water to oxygen and a kinetic analysis of the factors determining the efficiency of the system. The system comprises a highly active molecular catalyst ([RuIV(tda)(py)2(O)]), [RuII(bpy)(bpy-COOEt)2]2+ (RuP), as sensitizer and Na2S2O8 as sacrificial electron acceptor. This combination exhibits a high quantum yield (25%) and chemical yield (93%) for photodriven oxygen evolution from water. The processes underlying this performance are identified using optical techniques, including transient absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence quenching. A high catalyst concentration is found to be required to optimize the efficiency of electron transfer between the oxidized sensitizer and the catalyst, which also has the effect of improving sensitizer stability. The main limitation of the quantum yield is the relatively low efficiency of S2O82– as an electron scavenger to oxidize the photoexcited ruthenium sensitizer RuP* to 2 RuP+, mainly due to competing back electron transfers to the RuP ground state. The overall rate of light-driven oxygen generation is determined primarily by the rate of photon absorption by the molecular sensitizer under the incident photon flux. As such, the performance of this efficient light-driven system is limited not by the properties of the molecular water oxidation catalyst, which exhibits both good kinetics and stability, but rather by the light absorption and quantum efficiency properties of the sensitizer and electron scavenger. We conclude by discussing the implications of these results for further optimization of molecular light-driven systems for water oxidation.

Charge-transfer complexes involving tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) derivatives are engineered in a 2D arrangement onto a carbon surface through the exposure of immobilized TTF units to TCNQ compounds. TTF molecules were immobilized as robust monolayers on carbon surfaces using the electrografting method followed by a click chemistry coupling. When the TTF monolayer is exposed to TCNQ, TCNQF2 (2,5-difluoro-TCNQ), and TCNQF4 (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-TCNQ), strong donor–acceptor complexes are formed onto the surface. A considerable decrease of the electrochemical response accompanies the formation of the charge-transfer complex. This observation is rationalized by the analysis of original crystal samples using an ultramicroelectrode cavity, confirming that charge-transfer complexes are electrochemically silent. 5,7,12,14-Tetraazapentacene-6,13-quinone (L) reacts with 2 equiv of [Ru(acac)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] to form two linkage isomeric bis(chelate) compounds, [{Ru-II(acac)(2)}(2)( mu-L)], blue 1, with 5,6;12,13 coordination and violet 2 with 5,6;13,14 coordination. The linkage isomers could be separated, structurally characterized in crystals as rac diastereomers (Delta Delta/ Lambda Lambda), and studied by voltammetry (CV, DPV), EPR, and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry (meso-1, rac-2). DFT and TD-DFT calculations support the structural and spectroscopic results and suggest a slight energy preference (Delta E = 263 cm(-1)) for the rac-isomer 1 as compared to 2. Starting from the Ru-II-(mu-L-0)-Ru-II configurations of 1 and 2 with low-lying metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorptions, the compounds undergo two reversible one-electron oxidation steps with open-shell intermediates 1(+) (K-c = 4 X 10(4)) and 2(+) (K-c = 6 X 10(5)). Both monocations display metal-centered spin according to EPR, but the DFT-calculated spin densities suggest a Rum(III)(mu-L center dot-)Ru-III three-spin situation with opposite spin density at the bridging ligand for the meso form of 1(+), estimated to lie 1887 cm(-1) lower in energy than rac-1(+), which is calculated with a Class II mixed-valent situation Ru-III-(mu-L-0)-Ru-II. A three-spin arrangement Ru-III-(mu-L center dot-)-Ru-III with negative spin density at one metal site is suggested by DFT for rac-(2+) which is more stable by Delta E = 890 cm(-1) than rac-1(+). Reduction of 1 or 2 (Kc = 10(7)-10(8)) occurs mainly at the central bridging ligand with notable contributions (30%) from the metals in 1(-) and 2(-). The mixed-valent Ru-III(mu-L)Ru-II versus radical-bridged Ru-III(mu-L center dot-)Ru-III alternative is discussed comprehensively in comparison with related valence-ambiguous cases.

Reactions between the π-acidic cyclic trimetallic coinage metal(I) complexes {[Cu(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3, {[Ag(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3, and {[Au(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3 with TTF, DBTTF and BEDT-TTF give rise to a series of coinage metal(I)-based new binary donor-acceptor adducts {[Cu(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3DBTTF} (1), {[Ag(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3DBTTF} (2), {[Au(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3DBTTF} (3), {[Cu(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3TTF} (4), {[Ag(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3TTF} (5), {[Au(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3TTF} (6), {[Cu(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3BEDT-TTF} (7), {[Ag(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3BEDT-TTF} (8), and {[Au(μ-3,5-(CF3)2pz)]3BEDT-TTF} (9), where pz = pyrazolate, TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, DBTTF = dibenzotetrathiafulvalene, and BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene. This series of binary donor-acceptor adducts has been found to exhibit remarkable supramolecular structures in both the solid state and solution, whereby they exhibit supramolecular stacked chains and oligomers, respectively. The supramolecular solid-state and solution binary donor-acceptor adducts also exhibit superior shelf stability under ambient laboratory storage conditions. Structural and other electronic properties of solids and solutions of these adducts have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural analysis, 1H and 19F NMR, UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and computational investigations. The combined results of XRD structural data analysis, spectroscopic measurements, and theoretical studies suggest sustenance of the donor-acceptor stacked structure and electronic communication in both the solid state and solution. These properties are discussed in terms of potential applications for this new class of supramolecular binary donor-acceptor adducts in molecular electronic devices, including solar cells, magnetic switching devices, and field-effect transistors.

The control of molecular systems by electrical charge or light is a prerequisite for their application in nanoelectronics. Such potential has been uniquely exploited in quinone-based resorcin[4]arene cavitands that can act as molecular grippers, reversibly expanding and contracting in response to electrical or electromagnetic stimuli. The development of such redox- and photoredox-driven gripper systems required employing a set of electrochemical, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical techniques that have been applied to control and monitor the redox state and the geometry of grippers. Here, we provide a systematic overview of this spectro-electrochemical toolbox in the context of the quinone redox chemistry and molecular gripping, from cyclic and rotating disc voltammetry, through square-wave voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry, to NMR, EPR, and ENDOR spectroscopy. The understanding of the molecular gripping process revealed through the lens of these techniques paves the way for more advanced molecular design and sets the basis for extending the utility of molecular grippers in the future. A pentapeptide sequence was functionalized with an asymmetric arylated methyl-viologen (AVI3D2) and through controllable β-sheet self-assembly, conductive nanofibers were formed. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and conductive atomic force microscopy, we investigated the molecular conformation of the resultant AVI3D2 fibers and how their conductivity is affected by β-sheet self-assembly. Heterogenization of RuL3 complexes on a support with proper anchor points provides a route toward design of green catalysts. In this paper, Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes are investigated with the aim to unravel the influence on the photocatalytic properties of varying nitrogen content in the ligands and of embedding the complex in a triazine-based covalent organic framework. To provide fundamental insight into the electronic mechanisms underlying this behavior, a computational study is performed. Both the ground and excited state properties of isolated and anchored ruthenium complexes are theoretically investigated by means of density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Varying the ligands among 2,2′-bipyridine, 2,2′-bipyrimidine, and 2,2′-bipyrazine allows us to tune to a certain extent the optical gaps and the metal to ligand charge transfer excitations. Heterogenization of the complex within a CTF support has a significant effect on the nature and energy of the electronic transitions. The allowed transitions are significantly red-shifted toward the near IR region and involve transitions from states localized on the CTF toward ligands attached to the ruthenium. The study shows how variations in ligands and anchoring on proper supports allows us to increase the range of wavelengths that may be exploited for photocatalysis.

Carbonyl-carbonyl olefination, known as McMurry reaction, represents a powerful strategy for the construction of olefins. However, catalytic variants that directly couple two carbonyl groups in a single reaction are less explored. Here, we report a photoredox-catalysis that uses B2Pin2 as terminal reductant and oxygen trap allowing for deoxygenative olefination of aromatic aldehydes under mild conditions. This strategy provides access to a diverse range of symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkenes with moderate to high yield (up to 83%) and functional-group tolerance. To follow the reaction pathway, a series of experiments were conducted including radical inhibition, deuterium labelling, fluorescence quenching and cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, NMR studies and DFT calculations were combined to detect and analyze three active intermediates: A cyclic three-membered anionic species, an ��-oxyboryl carbanion and a 1,1-benzyldiboronate ester. A combination of photosynthetic biocatalysts with high surface area conductive materials mediated by an osmium-complex modified redox polymer (OsRP) holds promising features for the development of sustainable "green" systems for solar energy conversion. In this work we performed a comparative study of two types of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized by pyrolysis of polymeric precursors. Both CNTs were of similar morphology, but had a different surface C/O ratio. The CNTs were utilized as a support for immobilization of thylakoid membranes, electrochemically wired through the OsRP. The photobioanodes based on the CNTs with a higher C/O ratio exhibit a higher maximum photocurrent density of 97.1 +/- 8.3 mu A cm(-2) at a light intensity of 400 W m(-2) with reduced charge transfer resistance, but had lower operational stability. Our results demonstrate the significance of investigating of electrochemical communication between the photosynthetic component, the redox mediator and the support nano-material and may offer new opportunities for designing and optimization of mediated bioelectrochemical systems. A donor acceptor dyad composed of a BF2-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and a C-60 fullerene has been newly synthesized and characterized. The two moieties are linked by direct addition of an azido substituted BODIPY on the C-60, producing an imino fullerene BODIPY adduct. The photoinduced charge transfer process in this system was studied by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Electron transfer toward the fullerene was found to occur selectively exciting both the BODIPY chromophore at 475 nm and the C-60 unit at 266 nm on a time scale of a few picoseconds, but the dynamics of charge separation was different in the two cases. Eletrochemical studies provided information on the redox potentials of the involved species and spectroelectrochemical measurements allowed to unambiguously assign the absorption band of the oxidized BODIPY moiety, which helped in the interpretation of the transient absorption spectra. The experimental studies were complemented by a theoretical analysis based on DFT computations of the excited state energies of the two components and their electronic couplings, which allowed identification of the charge transfer mechanism and rationalization of the different kinetic behavior observed by changing the excitation conditions.

Oxidative transformations utilizing molecular oxygen (O2 ) as the stoichiometric oxidant are of paramount importance in organic synthesis from ecological and economical perspectives. Alcohol oxidation reactions that employ O2 are scarce in homogeneous catalysis and the efficacy of such systems has been constrained by limited substrate scope (most involve secondary alcohol oxidation) or practical factors, such as the need for an excess of base or an additive. Catalytic systems employing O2 as the "primary" oxidant, in the absence of any additive, are rare. A solution to this longstanding issue is offered by the development of an efficient ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation protocol, which enables smooth oxidation of a wide variety of primary, as well as secondary benzylic, allylic, heterocyclic, and aliphatic, alcohols with molecular oxygen as the primary oxidant and without any base or hydrogen- or electron-transfer agents. Most importantly, a high degree of selectivity during alcohol oxidation has been predicted for complex settings. Preliminary mechanistic studies including (18) O labeling established the in situ formation of an oxo-ruthenium intermediate as the active catalytic species in the cycle and involvement of a two-electron hydride transfer in the rate-limiting step.

Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations are employed to assign previously recorded experimental spectroscopic signatures of the intermediates occurring during the photo-induced repair of (6-4) photolesions by photolyases to specific molecular structures. Based on this close comparison of experiment and theory it is demonstrated that the acting repair mechanism involves proton transfer from the protonated His365 to the N3' nitrogen of the lesion, which proceeds simultaneously with intramolecular OH transfer along an oxetane-like transition state.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) oxidize guanosines in DNA to form 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG), a biomarker for oxidative stress. Herein we describe a novel 64-microwell electrochemiluminescent (ECL) array enabling sensitive multiplexed detection of 8-oxodG in dsDNA without hydrolysis. Films of Nafion and reduced graphene oxide containing ECL dye [Os(bpy)(2)(phen-benz-COOH)](2+) (OsNG, {bpy= 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-benz-COOH = (4-(1,10-phenanthrolin-6-yl)benzoic acid)}) were assembled into microwells on a pyrolytic graphite wafer to detect 8-oxodG in oligonucleotides by electrochemiluminescence (ECL). DNA oxidation by Fenton's reagent or by ROS formation during redox cycles involving NADPH, Cu-II, and model metabolites was monitored. UPLC-MS/MS of oxidized DNA samples were used for calibration. Detection limit for the fluidic arrays was one 8-oxodG per 670 intact nucleobases, or 0.15%. The method is sensitive enough to evaluate DNA oxidation from biologically relevant ROS-generating reactions of Cull, NADPH, and model metabolites.

With an excess of a strong acid, 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-quinone (DDQ) is shown to promote metal-free intermolecular oxidative dehydrogenative (ODH) 3,3'-coupling of 2-aryl-benzo[b]furans and 2-aryl-benzo[b]thiophenes up to 92% yield as demonstrated with 9 substrates. Based on the analysis of oxidation potentials and molecular orbitals combined with EPR, NMR and UV-Vis observations, the studied reaction is initiated by a DDQ-substrate charge transfer complex and presumably proceeds via oxidation of the substrate into an electrophilic radical cation that further reacts with another molecule of a neutral substrate. The coupling reactivity can easily be predicted from the oxidation potential of the substrate and the morphology of its frontier molecular orbitals. The intermolecular ODH coupling reaction allowed a concise total synthesis of the natural product shandougenine B.

Inverted quantum dot sensitized solar cells using non-toxic CuInSxSe2–x nanocrystals deposited on mesoporous NiO demonstrate high hole injection rates of 10–8 s–1 and record efficiencies of 1.25%.., Recent progress in quantum dot (QD) sensitized solar cells has demonstrated the possibility of low-cost and efficient photovoltaics. However, the standard device structure based on n-type materials often suffers from slow hole injection rate, which may lead to unbalanced charge transport. We have fabricated efficient p-type (inverted) QD sensitized cells, which combine the advantages of conventional QD cells with p-type dye sensitized configurations. Moreover, p-type QD sensitized cells can be used in highly promising tandem configurations with n-type ones. QDs without toxic Cd and Pb elements and with improved absorption and stability were successfully deposited onto mesoporous NiO electrode showing good coverage and penetration according to morphological analysis. Detailed photophysical charge transfer studies showed that high hole injection rates (108 s–1) observed in such systems are comparable with electron injection in conventional n-type QD assemblies. Inverted solar cells fabricated with various QDs demonstrate excellent power conversion efficiencies of up to 1.25%, which is 4 times higher than the best values for previous inverted QD sensitized cells. Attempts to passivate the surface of the QDs show that traditional methods of reduction of recombination in the QD sensitized cells are not applicable to the inverted architectures.

The addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) has been recently considered as a method to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 by favoring charge carrier separation. Here, we show that it is possible to improve the efficiency of GNP-TiO2 composites by controlling the shape, stability, and facets of TiO2 NPs grown on GNP functionalized with either COOH or NH2 groups, while adding ethylendiamine (EDA) and oleic acid (OA) during a hydrothermal synthesis. We studied the photocatalytic activity of all synthesized materials under UV-A light using phenol as a target molecule. GNP-TiO2 composites synthesized on COOH-functionalized GNP, exposing {101} facets, were more efficient at abating phenol than those synthesized on NH2-functionalized GNP, exposing {101} and {100} facets. However, neither of these composites was stable under irradiation. The addition of both OA and EDA stabilized the materials under irradiation; however, only the composite prepared on COOH-functionalized GNP in the presence of EDA showed a significant increase in phenol degradation rate, leading to results that were better than those obtained with TiO2 alone. This result can be attributed to Ti-OH complexation by EDA, which protects GNP from oxidation. The orientation of the most reducing {101} facets toward GNP and the most oxidizing {100} facets toward the solution induces faster phenol degradation owing to a better separation of the charge carriers.

Cascade polyene cyclization reactions are highly efficient and elegant bioinspired transformations that involve simultaneous multiple bond constructions to rapidly generate complex polycyclic molecules. The oxidation of the C-H and C=C bonds of hydrocarbons with H2O2 catalyzed by non-heme iron complexes with pentadentate ligands is widely accepted as involving a reactive Fe-IV=O species such as [(N4Py)Fe-IV=O](2+) formed by homolytic cleavage of the O-O bond of an Fe-III-OOH intermediate (where N4Py is 1,1-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine). We show here that at low H2O2 concentrations the Fe-IV=O species formed is detectable in methanol. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition of H2O2 to water and O-2 is an important competing pathway that limits efficiency in the terminal oxidant and indeed dominates reactivity except where only sub-/near-stoichiometric amounts of H2O2 are present. Although independently prepared [(N4Py)Fe-IV=O](2+) oxidizes stoichiometric H2O2 rapidly, the rate of formation of Fe-IV=O from the Fe-III-OOH intermediate is too low to account for the rate of H2O2 decomposition observed under catalytic conditions. Indeed, with excess H2O2, disproportionation to O-2 and H2O is due to reaction with the Fe-III-OOH intermediate and thereby prevents formation of the Fe-IV=O species. These data rationalize that the activity of these catalysts with respect to hydrocarbon/alkene oxidation is maximized by maintaining sub-/near-stoichiometric steady-state concentrations of H2O2, which ensure that the rate of the H2O2 oxidation by the Fe-III-OOH intermediate is less than the rate of the O-O bond homolysis and the subsequent reaction of the Fe-IV=O species with a substrate.

Significance Complex I is the primary energy-converting enzyme of aerobic respiratory chains. By reducing quinone to quinol, this gigantic enzyme pumps protons across its membrane domain, which in turn powers ATP synthesis and active transport. Despite the recently resolved molecular structures of complex I, the quinone dynamics and its coupling to the pumping function remains unclear. Here we show by large-scale molecular simulations that the quinone reduction leads to ejection of the quinol molecule from the active site into a second binding site near the proton-pumping membrane domain of complex I. The identified region has been linked with human mitochondrial disorders. Our work suggests that the quinone dynamics provides a key coupling element in complex I., Complex I couples the free energy released from quinone (Q) reduction to pump protons across the biological membrane in the respiratory chains of mitochondria and many bacteria. The Q reduction site is separated by a large distance from the proton-pumping membrane domain. To address the molecular mechanism of this long-range proton-electron coupling, we perform here full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, free energy calculations, and continuum electrostatics calculations on complex I from Thermus thermophilus. We show that the dynamics of Q is redox-state-dependent, and that quinol, QH2, moves out of its reduction site and into a site in the Q tunnel that is occupied by a Q analog in a crystal structure of Yarrowia lipolytica. We also identify a second Q-binding site near the opening of the Q tunnel in the membrane domain, where the Q headgroup forms strong interactions with a cluster of aromatic and charged residues, while the Q tail resides in the lipid membrane. We estimate the effective diffusion coefficient of Q in the tunnel, and in turn the characteristic time for Q to reach the active site and for QH2 to escape to the membrane. Our simulations show that Q moves along the Q tunnel in a redox-state-dependent manner, with distinct binding sites formed by conserved residue clusters. The motion of Q to these binding sites is proposed to be coupled to the proton-pumping machinery in complex I.

The performance of solar cells based on molecular electronic materials is limited by relatively high nonradiative voltage losses. The primary pathway for nonradiative recombination in organic donor-acceptor heterojunction devices is believed to be the decay of a charge-transfer (CT) excited state to the ground state via energy transfer to vibrational modes. Recently, nonradiative voltage losses have been related to properties of the charge-transfer state such as the Franck-Condon factor describing the overlap of the CT and ground-state vibrational states and, therefore, to the energy of the CT state. However, experimental data do not always follow the trends suggested by the simple model. Here, we extend this recombination model to include other factors that influence the nonradiative decay-rate constant, and therefore the open-circuit voltage, but have not yet been explored in detail. We use the extended model to understand the observed behavior of series of small molecules:fullerene blend devices, where open-circuit voltage appears insensitive to nonradiative loss. The trend could be explained only in terms of a microstructure-dependent CT-state oscillator strength, showing that parameters other than CT-state energy can control nonradiative recombination. We present design rules for improving open-circuit voltage via the control of material parameters and propose a realistic limit to the power-conversion efficiency of organic solar cells. CA extern

The design and synthesis of a set of supported azolium salt pre-catalysts is presented along with their utilization in the production of monoesters of glycerol and solketal by oxidative N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalysis through batch and continuous-flow approaches. After a propaedeutic study with soluble NHCs, the heterogeneous analogues (silica and polystyrene supports) were tested in a model monoesterification of glycerol using either the Kharasch oxidant or air (in the presence of electron transfer mediators) as the terminal oxidants. The best performing polystyrene-supported triazolium salt pre-catalyst afforded monoacylglycerols (MAGs) in high yields (up to 95%) and almost complete selectivity (monoester/diester >95 : 5) using air and the green solvent Me-THF. The synthesis of fully bio-based MAGs from furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), citronellal, and vanillin is also reported. Continuous-flow experiments have been finally performed by fabricating the corresponding packed-bed microreactor, which could be operated for ca. 120 hours with maintenance of conversion efficiency and selectivity.

A comprehensive understanding of the charge generation mechanism in organic solar cells is critical for further improvement of device performance. Currently, the origin and magnitude of the coulombic binding energy of the charge-transfer state (CTS), an intermediate state which is fundamental for the charge separation process, are still under debate. Here, we propose a new approach for determining the dissociation energy of localised CTSs for a range of devices with different alignments of molecular energy levels (tuned by chemical modifications of fullerene) and disorder (adjusted by the blend composition) using temperature-dependent pump-push photocurrent spectroscopy. We observe that the dissociation of localised CTSs from initial excitation is a temperature-dependent process, and we determined the binding energy of these CTSs by measuring a single activation energy over a wide temperature range. We propose a simple qualitative picture to explain the observation, based on the split between the bound CTSs and free charges. In all the material systems studied here, the activation energy falls within the range of 90 ± 50 meV (corresponding to ∼1 nm separation of an electron–hole pair). Surprisingly, the binding energy does not depend on the material composition or the driving energy (∼150 meV variation) for charge separation. In contrast, the number of formed bound states and their following recombination dynamics are material- and nanomorphology-sensitive. Such observations in the studied benchmark polymer:fullerene systems reveal unexpected similarities in the energetics of CTSs formed in different electronic environments. This makes our results of general importance for understanding the photophysics at the heterojunction interface and for further development of organic photovoltaics.

The role of relative concentrations of energy donors (fluorescein, D), acceptors (rhodamine, A) and silica on Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency and dynamics in dye silica conjugates has been studied, as a part of our initial attempts to ascertain the potential of dye-silica nanoconjugates as light harvesting nanoantennae. Two types of dye-silica nanoconjugates, prepared by the co-condensation method, have been examined. The first is based on silica nanoshells (SNS-dye) while the second is based on silica nanoparticles (SNP-dye). Both these nanostructures have a diameter of approximately 25 nm. Efficient energy transfer (91% and 97%, respectively) has been observed in both, for total fluorophore concentration upto 5-6 mmol, irrespective of the D : A ratio. The lower efficiency at dye concentrations greater than these has been rationalized by the competitive self-quenching of D. A risetime of approximately 500 fs is observed in the A emission in SNS-dye, but there is no such feature in SNP-dye. The shape and size dependence of the FRET efficiency and dynamics has been rationalized as follows: the initial step of dye rich core formation in nanoparticles results in high proximity of dye molecules to each other, leading to highly efficient FRET than in nanoshells. In larger SNP-dye nanoconjugates of 65 nm in diameter, the FRET efficiency decreases to 85%, while a risetime in D emission emerges. This provides support to the proposed correlation between efficiency and packing. Hence, it is inferred that total fluorophore concentration, rather than D : A ratios, governs the FRET dynamics and efficiency in these systems.

International audience; Solvent effects in beta-phosphorylated nitroxides show that nitrogen and phosphorus hyperfine coupling constants a(N) and a(p), increase and decrease with increasing polarity, polarizity, and Hydrogen Bond Donor effects of solvents, respectively. In a series of articles, it was shown that the driving interaction controlling the change in a(p) is the maximization of the N+center dot O-center dot center dot center dot center dot center dot center dot P+-O- dipole - dipole interaction. In this work, we show that the steric strain in Spiro beta-phosphotylated nitroxides affords the opposite trend for a(p) that is, a(p) increases with increasing solvent properties features. We demonstrate that efficient and nearly field-independent charge separation of electron hole pairs in organic planar heterojunction solar cells can be described by an incoherent hopping mechanism. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations that include the effect of on-chain delocalization as well as entropic contributions, we simulate the dissociation of the charge-transfer state in polymer fullerene bilayer solar cells. The model further explains experimental results of almost field independent charge separation in bilayers of molecular systems with fullerenes and provides important guidelines at the molecular level for maximizing the efficiencies of organic solar cells. Thus, utilizing coherent phenomena is not necessarily required for highly efficient charge separation in organic solar cells. Light-induced chemical reactions on bulk metal surfaces have been explored for more than 50 years. Light absorption at the metal surface plays a key role in inducing photochemical transformations of adsorbed molecules. Our current ability to control both the absorption cross-sections and the energy of absorbed light by metal plasmonic nanoparticles opens new pathways for the manipulation of photochemical reactions. Physical phenomena associated with the localized surface plasmon resonances, such as energetic surface states and intensified electric fields, force us to revisit our traditional understanding of photochemical reactions at metal surfaces. Long standing goals in the field – such as bond selectivity and increased efficiency of photocatalytic processes – might now be achievable, assisted by plasmonic nanoparticles. This Progress Report intends to examine some of the elementary concepts and mechanisms behind these processes in the context of the most recent advancements in the fields of plasmonic-assisted chemistry, charge transfer at the nanoscale, and surface photochemistry.

Small push pull molecules attract much attention as prospective donor materials for organic solar cells (OSCs). By chemical engineering, it is possible to combine a number of attractive properties such as broad absorption, efficient charge separation, and vacuum and solution processabilities in a single molecule. Here we report the synthesis and early time photophysics of such a molecule, TPA-2T-DCV-Me, based on the triphenylamine (TPA) donor core and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor end group connected by a thiophene bridge. Using time-resolved photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence, we demonstrate that in blends with [70]PCBM the molecule works both as an electron donor and hole acceptor, thereby allowing for two independent channels of charge generation. The charge-generation process is followed by the recombination of interfacial charge transfer states that takes place on the subnanosecond time scale as revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence and nongeminate recombination as follows from the OSC performance. Our findings demonstrate the potential of TPA-DCV-based molecules as donor materials for both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OSCs.

The reduction of an aryl iodide is generally believed to involve a clean-cut two-electron: reduction to produce an aryl anion and iodide. This is in contradiction to what is observed if a highly efficient grafting agent, such as an aryldiazonium salt, is employed. The difference in behavior is explained by the much more extreme potentials required for reducing an aryl iodide; which facilitates the further reduction of the aryl radical formed as an intermediate. However, in this study we disclose that electrografting of aryl iodides is indeed possible upon extended voltammetric cycling. This implies that even if the number of aryl radicals left unreduced at the electrode surface is exceedingly small, a functionalization of the surface may still be promoted. In fact,, the grafting efficiency is found to increase during the grafting process, which may be explained by the inhibiting effect the growing film exerts on the competing reduction of the aryl radical. The, slow buildup of the organic film results in a well-ordered structure as shown by the well-defined electrochemical response frond a grafted film containing ferrocenylmethyl groups. Hence, the reduction of aryl Iodides allows a precisely controlled, albeit slow, growth of thin organic films.

Access to fresh water and energy is ranked as one of the most severe challenges to humankind. The restricted availability of fossil fuels and clean water does not match the increasing energy demands and growing population needs, which, desirably, should be satisfied in the most sustainable, clean and inexpensive way. Here, we report clean and sustainable conversion of solar energy into electricity by photo-and bio-electrocatalytic recycling of the H2O/O-2 redox couple in a hybrid bio-photovoltaic (BPV) membraneless cell comprising a sunlight-illuminated water-oxidizing semiconductor anode (either Zn-doped hematite or TiO2) and an oxygen-reducing enzymatic biocathode, in such environmental media as seawater. Upon simulated solar light illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm(-2)), the maximum power density (P-max) generated by the cell was 236 and 21.4 mu W cm(-2) in 1 M Tris-HCl and seawater, both at pH 8, respectively. In seawater its ionic content inhibited mostly the activity of the photoanode, but not that of the biocathode. The obtained Pmax values were orders of magnitude higher than those of a photo-electrochemical cell with a Pt mesh cathode (0.32 mu W cm(-2) in seawater). The demonstrated thermodynamically feasible coupling of cost-effective photoactive materials such as TiO2 or hematite semiconductors and enzymatic counterparts in seawater media opens a prospective clean and sustainable way of transformation of the most abundant, clean and renewable source of energy - solar light - and the Earth's most massive water resource - seawater - into electricity, which can also be used for fresh water production.

This work addresses the development of a compact paper-based enzymatic microfluidic glucose/O2 fuel cell that can operate using a very limited sample volume (≈35 µl) and explores the energy generated by glucose at concentrations typically found in blood samples at physiological conditions (pH 7.4). Carbon paper electrodes combined with a paper sample absorption substrate all contained within a plastic microfluidic casing are used to construct the paper-based fuel cell. The anode catalysts consist of glucose dehydrogenase and [Os(4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-bipyridine)2(poly-vinylimidazole)10Cl]+ as mediator, while the cathode catalysts were bilirubin oxidase and [Os(2,2′-bipyridine)2(poly-vinylimidazole)10Cl]+ as mediator. The fuel cell delivered a linear power output response to glucose over the range of 2.5–30 mM, with power densities ranging from 20 to 90 µW cm−2. The quantification of the available electrical power as well as the energy density extracted from small synthetic samples allows planning potential uses of this energy to power different sensors and analysis devices in a wide variety of in-vitro applications., Peter Ó Conghaile is thanked for synthesis of the redox polymers. A mononuclear hexa-coordinated iron carbonyl complex [Fe(mu-bdt)(CO)(2)(PTA)(2)](1) (bdt = 1,2-benzenedithiolate; PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) with two bulky phosphine ligands in the trans position was synthesized and characterized by X-ray structural analysis coulometry data, FTIR, electrochemistry and electronic structure calculations. The complex undergoes a facilitated two-electron reduction 1/1(2-) and shows an inverted one-electron reduction for 1/1(-) at higher potentials. Electrochemical investigations of 1 are compared to the closely related [Fe(bdt)(CO)(2)(PMe3)(2)] compound. A mechanistic suggestion for the hydrogen evolution reaction upon proton reduction from acid media is derived. The stability of 1 in both weak and strong acids is monitored by cyclic voltammetry.
