Chemotherapy is the most common treatment for all cancer patients but this treatment poses many side effects due to lack of drug’s selectivity. To overcome this problem, utilizing a better and more effective delivery agent is the solution. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) emerged as a promising platform in development of drug delivery agent. This is due to its desirable properties such as tunable pores, large surface area, good biocompatibility and easy functionalization. Furthermore, these properties can be tuned through the utilization of alternative template such as pyridinium ionic liquid. Besides, by employing surface functionalization, the effectiveness of MSNs as drug delivery agent may also increase. This work reported the usage of 1-hexadecylpyridinium bromide ionic liquid as template for MSNs production and the surface of MSNs was then further functionalized via post – grafting method in order to obtain MSN – NH2, MSN – SH and MSN – COOH as drug carrier, respectively. These functionalized MSNs were then used to study the drug loading and drug release of hydrophilic drug, gemcitabine and hydrophobic drug, quercetin. For quercetin, MSN-NH2 had the highest drug loading percentage (72%) and slowest release (14%) in 48 h while for gemcitabine, it was found that MSN-COOH had the highest drug loading percentage (45%) and slowest release (15%) in 48 h. Based on the results, it is suggested that mesoporous silica nanoparticle with surface functionalization has suitable properties for controlled drug release which gives constant release behavior over a period of time to avoid repeated administration of drug where the drug is administered at a fixed dosage and regular time interval. A plasticized solid polymer electrolyte system is prepared using polymer blend of methyl cellulose–potato starch with lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) as dopant salt and glycerol as plasticizer. Transport properties of the electrolytes are investigated using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). By applying a method proposed by Arof et al. which was found to be suitable for both Arrhenius and Vogel–Tammann–Fulcher (VTF) type of electrolytes, the number density (n), diffusion coefficient (D), and mobility (μ) of ions are found to be influenced by the concentration of glycerol. From ion and electron transference number analysis, it is verified that ions are the main charge carriers. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) verifies the suitability of the most conductive electrolyte to be employed in the carbon-based symmetric electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) fabrication. The EDLC has been tested using the galvanostatic charge–discharge and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The specific capacitance (Csp) of the electrode using CV at a sweep rate of 2 mV s−1 is found to be 61.58 F g−1. The EDLC has been tested for 1000 charge–discharge cycles with the highest Csp value of 28.04 F g−1.

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the form of crystalline solid are commonly produced in drug manufacturing industries. However, crystalline solid APIs have a low solubility and the ability to cause polymorphism transformation. In order to overcome these problems, a modification of APIs in the form of protic ionic liquids (PILs) has been proposed. In the present study, a series of five ferulate-based PILs were successfully synthesised and characterised by appropriate spectral analysis. The antioxidant activity of synthesised PILs was determined through the 2,2‑diphenyl‑1‑picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assays. The spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of PILs supported by the Density Function Theory (DFT) calculation. The synthesised ferulate-based PILs exhibited low EC50 ranging from 12.93 ± 0.05 to 17.40 ± 0.04 μM indicating a strong antioxidant activity compared to parent acid (EC50 of 21.40 ± 0.05 μM). Prediction of antioxidant activity of the PILs and their ionic interactions at the molecular level were studied by applying DFT calculation at B3-LYP/6-311G*** level and COSMO-RS. Based on the optimised geometry, the ion-pair of PILs formed a strong directional intermolecular hydrogen bond between the –NH group of the cation with the –COOH group of the anion with interaction energy of −111 to −120 kcal mol−1. Predicted antioxidant activity indicated that the PILs's cation has a weak interaction with an anion as observed from the σ-potential analysis.

The biggest challenge faced in oil refineries is the removal of sulfur compounds in fuel oil. The sulfur compounds which are found in fuel oil such as gasoline and diesel, react with oxygen in the atmosphere to produce sulfur oxide (SOx) gases when combusted. These sulfur compounds produced from the reaction with oxygen in the atmosphere may result in various health problems and environmental effects. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is the conventional process used to remove sulfur compounds from fuel oil. However, the high operating conditions required for this process and its inefficiency in removing the organosulfur compounds turn to be the major drawbacks of this system. Researchers have also studied several alternatives to remove sulfur from fuel oil. The use of ionic liquids (ILs) has also drawn the interest of researchers to incorporate them in the desulfurization process. The environmental effects resulting from the use of these ILs can be eliminated using eutectic-based ionic liquids (EILs), which are known as greener solvents. In this research, a combination of extractive desulfurization (EDS) and oxidative desulfurization (ODS) using a photocatalyst and EIL was studied. The photocatalyst used is a pre-reported catalyst, Cu-Fe/TiO2 and the EIL were synthesized by mixing choline chloride (ChCl) with organic acids. The acids used for the EILs were propionic acid (PA) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA). The EILs synthesized were characterized using thermogravimetry analyser (TGA) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis to determine the physical properties of the EILs. Based on the TGA analysis, ChCl (1): PA (3) obtained the highest thermal stability whereas, as for the DSC analysis, all synthesized EILs have a lower melting point than its pure component. Further evaluation on the best EIL for the desulfurization process was carried out in a photo-reactor under UV light in the presence of Cu-Fe/TiO2 photocatalyst and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Once the oxidation and extraction process were completed, the oil phase of the mixture was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure the sulfur removal efficiency. In terms of the desulfurization efficiency, the EIL of ChCl (1): TSA (2) showed a removal efficiency of about 99.07%.

Extractive catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) is the one of the recent methods used in fuel desulfurization which involved the use of catalyst in the oxidative desulfurization of diesel fuel. This study is aimed to test the effectiveness of synthesized choline chloride (ChCl) based deep eutectic solvent (DES) in fuel desulfurization via ECODS method, with the presence of graphene oxide (GO) as catalyst and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as oxidant. In this study, 16 DESs based on choline chloride were synthesized using glycerol (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), tetraethylene glycol (TEG) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The characterization of the synthesized DES was carried out via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, density, and viscosity determination. According to the screening result, ChCl-PEG (1:4) was found to be the most effective DES for desulfurization using ECODS method, with a removal of up to 47.4% of sulfur containing compounds in model oil in just 10 min per cycle after the optimization of the reaction parameters, and up to 95% desulfurization efficiency could be achieved by six cycles of desulfurization. It is found that the addition of GO as catalyst does not increase the desulfurization performance drastically, hence, future studies for the desulfurization performance of DESs made up from ChCl and PEG and its derivatives can be done simply by using extraction desulfurization (EDS) method instead of ECODS method, for cost reduction purpose and easier regulation of DES waste into environment.

An aluminium-based metal–organic framework ((MOF), MIL-53(Al)), was hydrothermally synthesized, characterized and applied for the remediation of the herbicides dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxy benzoic acid) and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) in aqueous medium. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to design, optimize and predict the non-linear relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The shared interaction of the effects of key response parameters on the adsorption capacity were assessed using the central composite design-RSM and ANN optimization models. The optimum adsorption capacities for dicamba and MCPA are 228.5 and 231.9 mg g−1, respectively. The RSM ANOVA results showed significant p-values, with coefficients of determination (R2) = 0.988 and 0.987 and R2 adjusted = 0.974 and 0.976 for dicamba and MCPA, respectively. The ANN prediction model gave R2 = 0.999 and 0.999, R2 adjusted = 0.997 and 0.995 and root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.001 and 0.004 for dicamba and MCPA, respectively. In each set of experimental conditions used for the study, the ANN gave better prediction than the RSM, with high accuracy and minimal error. The rapid removal (∼25 min), reusability (5 times) and good agreement between the experimental findings and simulation results suggest the great potential of MIL-53(Al) for the remediation of dicamba and MCPA from water matrices.

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) has been commercially employed for the production of ultra-low sulfur fuel oil. However, HDS is unable to remove sterically hindered sulfur-containing compounds such as dibenzothiophene (DBT) and benzothiophene (BT). An alternative way to remove sulfur is via extractive desulfurization system (EDS) using deep eutectic solvents (DES) as sustainable extractant. In this work, liquid polymer DES was synthesized using tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) and poly(ethylene glycol) 400 (PEG) with different molar ratios. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to study the effect of independent variables toward extraction efficiency (EE). Three significant operating parameters, temperature (25&ndash, 70 &deg, C), DES molar ratio (1&ndash, 3), and DES volume ratio (0.2&ndash, 2.0), were varied to study the EE of sulfur from model oil. A quadratic model was selected based on the fit summary test, revealing that the extraction efficiency was greatly influenced by the amount of DES used, followed by the extraction temperature and PEG ratio. Although molar ratio of DES was less sensitive towards EDS performance, the EE was much higher at lower PEG ratio. For the realization of an energy-efficient EDS system, optimization of EDS parameters and EE was carried out via a desirability tool. At 25 &deg, C, 1:1 molar ratio of TBAC to PEG, and DES-to-model-oil-volume ratio of 1, removal of DBT reached as high as 79.01%. The present findings could provide valuable insight into the development of practicable EDS technology as a substitute to previous HDS process.

The behavior of the inclusion behavior of guanosine (GU) with beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in the liquid, solid and virtual state were investigated. The absorption and fluorescence spectral were used to determine the inclusion behavior in liquid state. FT-IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, PXRD and FESEM techniques were used to investigate the inclusion behavior in solid-state, meanwhile the virtual state studies are done by molecular docking. The solid inclusion complex (GU: β-CD) was prepared by using the co-precipitation method. The binding constant (K) of (GU: β-CD) was calculated by using Benesi-Hildebrand. Besides that, the 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of inclusion complex was confirmed by using the Benesi-Hildebrand plot and Job's plot of continuous variation method. The most preferable model of GU: β-CD that suggested via molecular docking studies was in good agreement with experimental results. The inclusion complex of GU: β-CD exerted its toxicity effects towards HepG2 cell lines based on the reduced number of cell viability and lowest IC50 value compared to the GU and β-CD viability.

Three adsorbents based on the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), viz.; MIL-88(Fe), NH2-MIL-88(Fe), and mixed-MIL-88(Fe) were synthesized using a microwave-assisted solvothermal technique. The as-synthesized MOFs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The MOFs were shown to possess highly crystalline and porous structures with specific surface areas of 1240, 941, and 1025 m2 g−1 and pore volumes of 0.7, 0.6 and 0.6 m3 g−1 for MIL-88(Fe), NH2-MIL-88(Fe) and mixed-MIL-88(Fe), respectively. Faster removal of a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, anthracene (ANT) within 25 minutes, was achieved when these MOFs were used as adsorbents in water. The removal efficiency was 98.3, 92.4 and 95.8% for MIL-88(Fe), NH2-MIL-88(Fe) and mixed-MIL-88(Fe), respectively. The kinetics and isotherms of the process were best statistically described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively, while the thermodynamic studies revealed the exothermic and spontaneous nature of the process. Docking simulations were found to be consistent with the experimental results with MIL-88(Fe) showing the best binding capacity with the ANT molecule.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to study the structures and properties of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) synthesised from tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) paired with ethylene glycol (EG). Measurements were performed at different mol ratios of TBAB:EG (1:2 to 1:6) and temperatures (303 to 333 K). Upon validation, MD simulations of DES’s density confirmed results to be in good agreement with previously validated experimental density (Maximum Deviation = 3.91%). The effects of different ratios and temperatures on radial distribution function (RDF), spatial distribution function (SDF), hydrogen bonding, mean square displacement (MSD) and self-diffusion coefficient of the TBAB:EG system were investigated. From RDF analysis, it was observed that Br− moved further away from TBA+ and formed a hydrogen bond with the hydroxyl group (OH) on EG at the closest distance of 0.270 nm. The self-diffusion coefficient of TBA+, Br− and EG increased proportionately to EG. High numbers of hydrogen bonds were observed at a high EG ratio as more intermolecular bondings between EG-Br were established. Hence, the introduction of EG molecules significantly affected ionic interaction within the resulting DES and changed its properties. Experimental data from infrared (IR) spectra and NMR were used to show a correlation between the formation of hydrogen-bonded EG-Br as observed in RDF. Increasing temperatures also altered the RDF, MSD and hydrogen bonding properties of the DES. Meanwhile, the main factor determining ionic movement was found to be the presence of TBA, as the ability of its cation’s long alkyl side chain to form clustering ions dictated the behaviour of the liquid. Therefore, the changes in ratios and temperatures in DESs are essential in predicting their properties and subsequently, in ascertaining the industrial applicability of a particular DES. The presented results showed that the studied DES can be used for many applications and suit the requirement for DNA technology, especially for DNA solvating medium.

Oily wastewater from the oil and gas industry negatively affects the environment. Oily wastewater typically exists in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion. Conventional methods to treat oily wastewater have low separation efficiency and long separation time and use large equipment. Therefore, a simple but effective method must be developed to separate oil-in-water emulsions with high separation efficiency and short separation times. Magnetite–reduced graphene oxide (M–RGO) nanocomposites were used as a demulsifier in this work. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were coated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets via an in situ chemical synthesis method. The synthesized M–RGO nanocomposites are environmentally friendly and can be recovered after demulsification by an external magnetic field. M–RGO characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Demulsification performance was evaluated in terms of M–RGO dosage, effects of pH, and brine concentration. The demulsification capability of M–RGO was determined based on the residual oil content of the emulsion, which was measured with a UV-vis spectrometer. The response surface method was used to determine the optimum conditions of the input variables. The optimum demulsification efficiency achieved at pH 4 and M–RGO dosage of 29 g L−1 was approximately 96%. This finding demonstrates that M–RGO nanocomposites are potential magnetic demulsifiers for oily wastewater that contains oil-in-water emulsions. Also, the recyclability of this nanocomposite has been tested and the results shown that it is a good recyclable demulsifier.

The binding characteristics of DNA in deep eutectic solvents (DESs), particularly the binding energy and interaction mechanism, are not widely known. In this study, the binding of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) based DES of different hydrogen bond donors (HBD), including ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol (Gly), 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) and 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PD), to calf thymus DNA was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the shorter the alkyl chain length (2 carbons) and higher EG ratios of TBABr:EG (1:5) increased the binding constant (Kb) between DES and DNA up to 5.75 × 105 kJ mol−1 and decreased the binding of Gibbs energy (ΔGo) to 32.86 kJ mol−1. Through displacement studies, all synthesised DESs have been shown to displace DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) and were able to bind on the minor groove of Adenine-Thymine (AT)-rich DNA. A higher number of hydroxyl (OH) groups caused the TBABr:Gly to form more hydrogen bonds with DNA bases and had the highest ability to quench DAPI from DNA, with Stern-Volmer constants (Ksv) of 115.16 M−1. This study demonstrated that the synthesised DESs were strongly bound to DNA through a combination of electrostatic, hydrophobic, and groove binding. Hence, DES has the potential to solvate and stabilise nucleic acid structures.

The properties of DNA in ionic liquids (ILs) have been well studied. However, it is not widely known about the quantitative analysis of ILs such as the binding profile, which could offer a detailed insight of their binding characteristic. In this study, the binding energy of alkylimidazolium-based ILs ([Cnbim]Br where n = 2, 4 and 6) to calf thymus DNA was determined using fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the binding constant increased while the values of binding Gibbs energy decreased linearly with increase of alkyl chain length of the ILs. Based on these data, the contribution of each methylene group in the tail of ILs in IL-DNA complex was determined. Moreover, low quenching constant was observed from the competitive displacement of intercalation of ethidium bromide to DNA, hence confirming that ILs are not intercalator. The length of alkyl chain contributed to the increase in the thermal stability of DNA as observed from UV–visible spectra while the CD results indicated that DNA retained its B-form without significant change in the conformation of its base pairs. The findings show that although the stability of DNA is mainly due to the electrostatic attraction between cationic head charge group of imidazolium cation and the DNA phosphate groups, the contribution from the length of alkyl chains also plays a significant role in IL-DNA complex.

Ionic liquids (ILs) were used in the dissolution of oil palm biomass, primarily empty fruit bunches (EFB), oil palm fronds (OPF), and oil palm trunks (OPT). These ILs acted as alternative solvents that could dissolve biopolymer molecules up to 5 wt.%. The IL, [emim][OAc] was the best solvent, dissolving EFB, OPF, and OPT of 99%, 100%, and 97%, respectively, at 100 ⁰C and 16 h. The lignin content of the regenerated oil palm solids for all biomass was quantified and showed significant reduction up to 35%; fiber length was also reduced as the heating time increased after IL dissolution. Also, the effect of ILs on the different parts of oil palm biomass fibers was thoroughly studied. The lignin content was quantified.

Optimization studies was conducted for the pyrene (PYR) adsorption onto Zr-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66(Zr) and NH2-UiO-66(Zr) in aqueous medium. Central composite design (CCD) model has shown good fittings of the coefficient of determination (R2) with non-significant lack of fit for both UiO-66(Zr) and NH2-UiO-66(Zr) MOFs. The optimized adsorption efficiency achieved by the UiO-66(Zr) and NH2-UiO-66(Zr) were 99.22 and 95.67% respectively. Artificial neural network (ANN) model was able to predict the experimental findings with high precision at topographic node of 5-4-2 structural layer. The kinetics and isotherms of the process was best described by pseudo-second-order Langmuir models respectively. The process was exothermic and spontaneous with the good reusability of the MOFs.

Injection of alkaline (A), polymer (P), and surfactant (S) chemicals in enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) processes increases output by changing the properties of the injected fluid. In this work, micellar fluid interactions were studied via microemulsion rheological analysis. Crude oil and stimulated brine with ASP or SP was used for bottle testing. The results revealed that no microemulsion was produced when ASP (Alkaline, Surfactant, and Polymer) or SP (Surfactant and Polymer) was left out during the bottle testing phase. The addition of ASP and SP led to the formation of microemulsions&mdash, up to 29% for 50% water cut (WC) ASP, and 36% for 40% WC SP. This shows that the addition of ASP and SP can be applied to flooding applications. The results of the rheological analysis show that the microemulsions behaved as a shear-thinning micellar fluid by decreasing viscosity with increase in shear rate. As per the power-law equation, the ASP micellar fluid viscoelastic behavior shows better shear-thinning compared to SP, suggesting more efficiency in fluid mobility and sweep efficiency. Most of the microemulsions exhibited viscoelastic fluid behavior (G&rsquo, = G&rdquo, ) at angular frequency of 10 to 60 rad s&minus, 1, and stable elastic fluid behavior (G&rsquo, &gt, G&rsquo, &rsquo, ) below 10 rad s&minus, 1 angular frequency. The viscosity of microemulsion fluids decreases as temperature increases, this indicates that the crude oil (i.e., alkanes) was solubilized in core micelles, leading to radial growth in the cylindrical part of the wormlike micelles, and resulting in a drop in end-cap energy and micelle length. No significant difference was found in the analysis of viscoelasticity evaluation and viscosity analysis for both ASP and SP microemulsions. The microemulsion tendency test and rheology test show that the addition of ASP and SP in the oil-water interface yields excellent viscoelastic properties.

The removal of H2S and CH4 from natural gas is crucial as H2S causes environmental contamination, corrodes the gas stream pipelines, and decreases the feedstock for industrial productions. Many scientific researches have shown that the metal-organic framework (MOF)/ionic liquids (ILs) have great potential as alternative adsorbents to capture H2S. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was carried out to determine the stability of ILs/IRMOF-1 as well as to study the solubility of H2S and CH4 gases in this ILs/IRMOF-1 hybrid material. Three choline-based ILs were incorporated into IRMOF-1 with different ratios of 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2% w/w, respectively, in which the most stable choline-based ILs/IRMOF-1 composite was analysed for H2S/CH4 solubility selectivity. Among the three choline-based ILs/IRMOF-1, [Chl] [SCN]/IRMOF-1 shows the most stable incorporation. However, the increment of ILs loaded in the IRMOF-1 significantly reduced the stability of the hybrid due to the crowding effect. Solvation free energy was then computed to determine the solubility of H2S and CH4 in the [Chl] [SCN]/IRMOF-1. H2S showed higher solubility compared to CH4, where its solubility declined with the increase of choline-based IL loading.

This work presents a molecular level investigation on the nature and mode of binding between imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) ([Cnbim]Br where n = 2, 4, 6) with calf thymus DNA. This investigation offers valuable insight into the mechanisms of interactions that can affect the structural features of DNA and possibly cause the alteration or inhibition of DNA function. To expedite analysis, the study resorted to using molecular docking and COnductor like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) in conjunction with fluorescence spectroscopic data for confirmation and validation of computational results. Both the fluorescence and docking studies consistently revealed a weak interaction between the two molecules, which corresponded to the binding energy of a stable docking conformation in the range of &minus, 5.19 to &minus, 7.75 kcal mol&minus, 1. As predicted, the rod-like structure of imidazolium-based ILs prefers to bind to the double-helix DNA through a minor groove. Interestingly, the occurrence of T-shape &pi, &pi, stacking was observed between the amine group in adenine that faces the aromatic ring of imidazole. In addition, data of COSMO-RS for the interaction of individual nucleic acid bases to imidazolium-based ILs affirmed that ILs showed a propensity to bind to different bases, the highest being guanine followed by cytosine, thymine, uracil, and adenine.

Solvation free energy of H2S in five cholinium-based amino acid ILs was computed using Bennet Acceptance Ratio (BAR) method under molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. From the predicted free energy, degree of removal of acid gases in liquids system can be measured and quantified by looking at excess chemical potential (μex) and Henry's law constant (kH). In order to obtain accurate value of predicted free energy, the optimised potential for liquid simulation (OPLS) force field used was validated against experimental density. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) is an alternative solvent which has the basic characteristics as conventional ionic liquid. The uniqueness lies on its easy synthesis, less toxic and low-cost production. Three glycol-based DES (ethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and poly (ethylene glycol)) with tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) as the hydrogen bond acceptor were successfully prepared. Unusually, all DES was achieved their eutectic mixing as low as 50 °C within 60 min. Thermal analysis study revealed that the most stable DES was the one with higher ethoxy chains. Structure elucidation study via Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the formation of eutectic mixture based on the intermolecular interaction from decreasing hydroxy group stretching frequency. Modifying ethoxy repeating unit in hydrogen bond donor could tailor the design of DES for numerous applications.

A mono- and di-substituted ionic liquid-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-ILs) were synthesized and their host-guest inclusion complex with 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) were evaluated by electrochemical study. First, both β-CD-ILs which is β-CD-1-BIMOTs and β-CD-2-BIMOTs were fabricated on carbon paste electrode (CPE) for determination of 2,4-DCP. The cyclic voltammetry results indicate that both β-CD-IL/CPEs exhibit higher oxidation peak current compared to native β-CD/CPE. Both complexes possess high sensitivity, stability and reproducibility. However, as the degree of substitution of ionic liquid (IL) increases, the selectivity of β-CD-IL towards 2,4-DCP decreases. Thus, it can be deduced that the degree of substitution of IL is influencing the host-guest inclusion complex of β-CD-ILs with 2,4-DCP.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were successfully synthesized using different types of ionic liquids (ILs) with different length of side alkyl chain as the template. The formed MSN were characterised by FTIR, XRD and BET. In this study, ILs of long alkyl chains of cation was found to decrease the pore size of the MSNs thus, increasing the surface area. FTIR spectroscopy affirmed the formation of SiO2 while the broad peak in the X-ray diffractogram conveyed that the silica of MSNs is amorphous.

The solvation free energies of five nucleic acid bases in [Cnbim]Br (where n = 2, 4, 6) ionic liquids (ILs) were computed using the Bennett acceptance ratio (BAR) method employing molecular dynamics simulations. The computed free energies using BAR were in agreement with other methods. The large and negative predicted free energies of the bases in ILs indicated that the bases were better solvated in the ILs rather than in water. Hydrogen bonding interactions between polar sites of the bases and ILs’ ions significantly contributed to the solvation mechanism.
