The formation of surface multilayer structures, induced by the addition of multivalent counterions in dilute surfactant solutions, has been widely observed in a range of anionic surfactants. The phenomenon is associated with the ability to manipulate surface properties, especially in the promotion of enhanced surface wetting, and in the presence of an extensive near surface reservoir for rapid surface delivery of surfactant and other active components. Hypothesis. In the single alkyl chain anionic surfactants, such as sodium dodecysulfate, SDS, sodium alkylethoxylsulfate, SAES, and alkylestersulfonate, AES, surface multilayer formation is promoted by trivalent counterions such as Al3+, and is generally not observed with divalent counterions, such as Ca2+ or with monovalent counterions. In the di-alkyl chain anionic surfactant, dodecylbenzenesulfonate, LAS, surface multilayer formation now occurs in the presence of divalent counterions. It is attributed to the closer proximity of a bulk lamellar phase, resulting in a greater tendency for surface multilayer formation, and hence should occur in other di-alkyl chain anionic surfactants. Experiments. Aerosol-OT, AOT, is one of the most commonly used di-alkyl chain anionic surfactants, and is extensively used as an emulsifying, wetting and dispersing agent. This paper reports on predominantly neutron reflectivity, NR, measurements which explore the nature of surface multilayer formation of the sodium salt of AOT at the air-solution interface with the separate addition of Ca2+ and Al3+ counterions. Findings. In the AOT concentration range 0.5 to 2.0 mM surface multilayer formation occurs at the air-solution interface with the addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ counterions. Although the evolution in the surface structure with surfactant and counterion concentration is broadly similar to those reported for SDS, SAES and AES, some notable differences occur. In particular the surfactant and counterion concentration thresholds for surface multilayer formation are higher for Ca2+ than for Al3+. The differences encountered reflect the greater affinity of the di-alkyl chain structure for lamellar formation, and how the surface packing is controlled in part by the headgroup structure and the associated counterion binding affinity.

There is an increased interest in the use of natural surfactant as replacements for synthetic surfactants due to their biosustainable and biocompatible properties. A category of natural surfactants which are attracting much current interest is the triterpenoid saponins; surface active components found extensively in a wide range of plant species. A wide range of different saponin structures exist, depending upon the plant species they are extracted from; but regardless of the variation in structural details they are all highly surface active glycosides. Greater exploitation and application requires a characterisation and understanding of their basic adsorption and self-assembly properties.HypothesisGlycyrrhizic acid, extracted from Licorice root, is a monodesmosidic triterpenoid saponin. It is widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications due to its anti-inflammatory properties, and is an ingredient in foods as a sweetener additive. It has an additional attraction due to its gel forming properties at relatively low concentrations. Although it has attracted much recent attention, many of its basic surface active characteristics, adsorption and self-assembly, remain relatively unexplored. How the structure of the Glycyrrhizic acid saponin affects its surface active properties and the impact of gelation on these properties are important considerations, and to investigate these are the focus of the study.ExperimentsIn this paper the adsorption properties at the air-water interface and the self-assembly in solution have been investigated using by neutron reflectivity and small angle neutron scattering; in non-gelling and gelling conditions.FindingsThe adsorption isotherm is determined in water and in the presence of gelling additives, and compared with the adsorption behaviour of other saponins. Gelation has minimal impact on the adsorption; apart from producing a rougher surface with a surface texture on a macroscopic length scale. Globular micelles are formed in aqueous solution with modest anisotropy, and are compared with the structure of other saponin micelles. The addition of gelling agents results in only minimal micelle growth, and the solutions remain isotropic under applied shear flow.

Hypothesis l -carnitine plays a crucial role in the cellular production of energy by transporting fatty acids into mitochondria. Acylated l -carnitines are amphiphilic and if appropriate physical properties were demonstrated, they could replace many currently used surfactants with improved biocompatibility and health benefits. Experiments This work evaluated the surface adsorption of lauroyl- l -carnitine (C12LC) and its aggregation behavior. The size and shape of the aggregates of C12LC surfactant were studied at different temperatures, concentrations, pH and ionic strength by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Surface tension measurements were carried out to determine the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of C12LC. Combining with the Gibbs equation, the surface excess at different concentrations could be determined. Neutron reflection (NR) was used to determine the structure of the adsorbed layer at the air/water interface with the help of isotopic contrast variations. Findings At pH 7, the limiting area per molecule (ACMC) of the zwitterionic C12LC adsorbed layer at the air/water interface was found to be 46 A2 from surface tension and neutron reflection, smaller than the values of C12PC, C12E5, DTAB, C12C4betaine and C12C8betaine but close to that of SDS. A pronounced surface tension minimum at pH 2 at the low ionic strength was linked to a minimum value of area per molecule of about 30 A2, indicating the competitive adsorption from traces of lauric acid produced by hydrolysis of C12LC. As the concentration increased, area per molecule reached a plateau of 37–39 A2, indicating the dissolution of the more surface-active lauric acid into the micelles of C12LC. DLS and SANS showed that the size and shape of micelles had little response to temperature, concentration, ionic strength or pH. The SANS profiles measured under 3 isotopic contrasts could be well fitted by the core–shell model, giving a spherical core radius of 15.7 A and a shell thickness of 10.5 A. The decrease of pH led to more protonated carboxyl groups and more positively charged micelles, but the micellar structures remained unchanged, in spite of their stronger interaction. These features make C12LC potentially attractive as a solubilizing agent.

Antimicrobial peptides are promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics. A group of self-assembling lipopeptides was formed by attaching an acyl chain to the N-terminus of α-helix-forming peptides with the sequence Cx-G(IIKK)yI-NH2 (CxGy, x = 4–12 and y = 2). CxGy self-assemble into nanofibers above their critical aggregation concentrations (CACs). With increasing x, the CACs decrease and the hydrophobic interactions increase, promoting secondary structure transitions within the nanofibers. Antimicrobial activity, determined by the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), also decreases with increasing x, but the MICs are significantly smaller than the CACs, suggesting effective bacterial membrane-disrupting power. Unlike conventional antibiotics, both C8G2 and C12G2 can kill Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli after only minutes of exposure under the concentrations studied. C12G2 nanofibers have considerably faster killing dynamics and lower cytotoxicity than their nonaggregated monomers. Antimicrobial activity of peptide aggregates has, to date, been underexploited, and it is found to be a very promising mechanism for peptide design. Detailed evidence for the molecular mechanisms involved is provided, based on superresolution fluorescence microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic force microscopy, neutron scattering/reflectivity, circular dichroism, and Brewster angle microscopy.

Hypothesis: Surfactants are widely used in agri-sprays to improve pesticide efficiency, but the mechanism underlying their interactions with the surface wax film on plants remains poorly understood. To facilitate physical characterisations, we have reconstituted wheat cuticular wax films onto an optically flat silicon substrate with and without octadecyltrimethoxysilane modification to control surface hydrophobicity. Experiments: Imaging techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) unravelled morphological features of the reconstituted wax films similar to those on leaves, showing little impact from the different substrates used. Neutron reflection (NR) established that reconstituted wax films were comprised of an underlying wax film decorated with top surface wax protrusions, a common feature irrespective of substrate hydrophobicity and highly consistent with what was observed from natural wax films. NR measurements, with the help of isotopic H/D substitutions to modify the scattering contributions of the wax and solvent, revealed different wax regimes within the wax films, illustrating the impact of surface hydrophilicity on the nanostructures within the wax films. Findings: It was observed from both spectroscopic ellipsometry and NR measurements that wax films formed on the hydrophobic substrate were more robust and durable against attack by nonionic surfactant C 12E 6 solubilised with pesticide Cyprodinil (CP) than films coated on the bare hydrophilic silica. Thus, the former could be a more feasible model for studying the wax-surfactant-pesticide interactions.

The formation of surface multilayer structures, with the addition of multivalent electrolytes, has been observed in a range of different anionic surfactants; and notably the sodium oxyethylene glycol alkyl sulfate, SAES, and alkyl ester sulfonate, AES, surfactants. The addition of increasing amounts of AlCl3 results in increasing surface layering, with a transition from monolayer to bilayer to ultimately more extended multilayer structures at the interface. The headgroup structures of these SAES and AES surfactants and their hydrophilic / hydrophobic balance give a degree of tolerance to the precipitation induced by multivalent counterions. This was considered to be important factor associated with the multivalent counterion induced surface layering. In this paper the impact of sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, an anionic surfactant more susceptible to precipitation in the presence of multivalent counterions, on the surface multilayer formation and solution self-assembly of sodium diethylene glycol monododecyl sulfate, SLES, is explored using surface tension, neutron reflectivity and small angle neutron scattering. The results show that SDS exhibits a similar progressive evolution in surface structures with increasing AlCl3 concentrations, as observed in SLES and related SAES surfactants, and in MES, sodium methyl ester dodecyl sulfonate surfactant. However in the SLES / SDS mixtures the structural evolution is different, and more complex pattern with increasing AlCl3 concentration is observed. The initial transition from monolayer to bilayer / trilayer structures exists, but the surface at higher AlCl3 concentration reverts to monolayer adsorption before extended multilayer structures are formed. Complementary small angle neutron scattering measurements indicate a more complex evolution in the micelle structure which broadly correlates with the surface behaviour. The results illustrate how subtle changes in headgroup structure and packing affect relative counterion binding and hence the surface and solution structures. The results reinforce and extend the observations of related structures on different SAES and AES surfactants, and highlight the opportunity for manipulating surface adsorption behaviour with surfactant mixtures.

Hypothesis Current viscoelastic surfactant (VES) aqueous solutions quickly freeze and thus, lose their viscoelasticity and flowability at subzero temperatures, limiting their practical use in cold environments. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop cryo-VES fluids with freezing point far below 0 °C. Since addition of alcohol antifreeze greatly reduces the freezing point of water, cryo-VES fluids might be generated in the presence of alcohols. Experiments The self-assembly behavior of a C22-tailed surfactant, erucyl dimethyl amidopropyl betaine (EDAB), in eight alcohol/water cosolvents from 20 to −20 °C was studied by pyrene fluorescent probe, cryo-TEM imaging and cryo-SNAS characterization, and the solution properties of the mixtures were investigated by rheological test. Findings It is found that the alcohol molecular structure, content and temperature play crucial roles dominating EDAB self-assembly behavior. Monohydric alcohols are unfavorable for micelles formation and growth, thus VES fluids cannot be obtained in the presence of 50 vol% monohydric alcohols even at subfreezing temperatures. On the contrary, dihydric and trihydric alcohols with short alkyl chain show less negative effect on EDAB micellization. Thus, cryo-VES fluids can be formed in the presence of 50 vol% ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol or glycerol due to the formation of wormlike micelles. These cryo-VES fluids with different alcohols exhibit different temperature-sensitivity and rheological properties, furnishing them with potential applications in anti-freeze hydraulic fracking fluids and aircraft deicing/anti-icing fluids.

Nonionic surfactants have been widely used in agri-sprays to enhance the solubility and mobility of pesticides, but what happens when pesticides become solubilized into surfactant micelles remains poorly characterized. To facilitate physical characterisations, we used the nonionic surfactant hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6) as a model system to solubilize 4 pesticides including Cyprodinil (CP), Diuron (DN), Azoxystrobin (AZ) and Difenoconazole (DF). The investigation focused on the influence of solubilizate and temperature in driving changes to the micellar nanostructures. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements were used to reveal changes to the micellar structure before and after pesticide solubilisation. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was also applied to investigate the solubility and location of each pesticide in the micelles. Pesticides clearly altered the micellar structure, by increasing the aggregation number and micellar lengths, whilst shrinking and dehydrating the shells, leading to a consequent decrease in the dispersion cloud points. Increases in temperature affected micellar structures in a similar way. Thus, temperature increases and the solubilisation of pesticides can both make the surfactant effectively more hydrophobic, altering the micellar nanostructures and shifting the pesticide location within the micelles. These changes subsequently implicate how pesticides are delivered into plants through the natural wax films.

Hypothesis: The α-sulfo alkyl ester, AES, surfactants are a class of anionic surfactants which have potential for improved sustainable performance in a range of applications, and an important feature is their enhanced tolerance to precipitation in the presence of multivalent counterions. It is proposed that their adsorption properties can be adjusted substantially by changing the length of the shorter alkyl chain, that of the alkanol group in the ester. Experiments: Surface tension and neutron reflectivity have been used to investigate the variation in the adsorption properties with the shorter alkyl chain length (methyl, ethyl and propyl), the impact of NaCl on the adsorption, the tendency to form surface multilayer structures in the presence of AlCl3, and the effects of mixing the methyl ester sulfonate with the ethyl and propyl ester sulfonates on the adsorption. Findings: The variations in the critical micelle concentration, CMC, the adsorption isotherms, the saturation adsorption values, and the impact of NaCl illustrate the subtle influence of varying the shorter alkyl chain length of the surfactant. The non-ideal mixing of pairs of AES surfactants with different alkanol group lengths of the ester show that the extent of the non-ideality changes as the difference in the alkanol length increases. The surface multilayer formation observed in the presence of AlCl3 varies in a complex manner with the length of the short chain and for mixtures of surfactants with different chains lengths.

Surfactants are important components of oral care products. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is the most common because of its foaming properties, taste and low cost. However, the use of ionic surfactants, especially SDS, is related to several oral mucosa conditions. Thus, there is a high interest in using non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants as they are less irritant. To better understand the performance of these surfactants in oral care products, we investigated their interaction with salivary pellicles i.e., the proteinaceous films that cover surfaces exposed to saliva. Specifically, we focused on pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) as model nonionic and amphoteric surfactants respectively, and investigated their interaction with reconstituted salivary pellicles with various surface techniques: Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation, Ellipsometry, Force Spectroscopy and Neutron Reflectometry. Both C12E5 and CAPB were gentler on pellicles than SDS, removing a lower amount. However, their interaction with pellicles differed. Our work indicates that CAPB would mainly interact with the mucin components of pellicles, leading to collapse and dehydration. In contrast, exposure to C12E5 had a minimal effect on the pellicles, mainly resulting in the replacement/solubilisation of some of the components anchoring pellicles to their substrate.

HypothesisPolyoxometalates (POMs) are metal oxygen clusters with a range of interesting magnetic and catalytic properties. POMs with attached hydrocarbon chains show amphiphilic behaviour so we hypothesised that mixtures of a nonionic surfactant and anionic surfactants with a polyoxometalate cluster as headgroup would form mixed micelles, giving control of the POM density in the micelle, and which would differ in size and shape from micelles formed by the individual surfactants. Due to the high charge and large size of the POM, we suggested that these would be nonideal mixtures due to the complex interactions between the two types of surfactants. The nonideality and the micellar composition may be quantified using regular solution theory. With supplementary information provided by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), an understanding of this unusual binary surfactant system can be established.ExperimentsA systematic study was performed on mixed surfactant systems containing polyoxometalate-headed amphiphiles (K10[P2W17O61OSi2(CnH2n+1)2], abbreviated as P2W17-2Cn, where n = 12, 14 or 16) and hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12EO6). Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of these mixtures were measured and used to calculate the interaction parameters based on regular solution theory, enabling prediction of micellar composition. Predictions were compared to micelle structures obtained from SANS. A phase diagram was also established.FindingsThe CMCs of these mixtures suggest unusual unfavourable interactions between the two species, despite formation of mixed micelles. Micellar compositions obtained from SANS concurred with those calculated using the averaged interaction parameters for P2W17-2Cn/C12EO6 (n = 12 and 14). We attribute the unfavourable interactions to a combination of different phenomena: counterion-mediated interactions between P2W17 units and the unfolding of the ethylene oxide headgroups of the nonionic surfactant, yet micelles still form in these systems due to the hydrophobic interactions between surfactant tails.

Saponins are naturally occurring biosurfactants present in a wide range of plant species. They are highly surface active glycosides, and are used to stabilise foams and emulsions in foods, beverages and cosmetics. They have great potential for an even wider range of applications, especially when mixed with different synthetic surfactants. Understanding those mixing properties are key to the exploitation of saponins in that wider range of potential applications. The surface adsorption properties of the saponin, escin, with two conventional nonionic surfactants, polyethylene glycol surfactants, have been studied at the air-water interface using neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension, ST. Although the saponin and polyethylene glycol, CnEOm, surfactants are both nonionic the disparity in the relative surface activities and packing constraints result in non-ideal mixing. Comparison with the predictions of the pseudo phase approximation requires the inclusion of the quadratic, cubic and quartic terms in the expansion of the excess free energy of mixing to explain the variations in the surface composition. For escin/pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO5, the interaction is attractive and close to ideal. For escin/octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO8, it is repulsive and close to the criteria for demixing. The differences in mixing behaviour are attributed to greater packing constraints imposed by the larger ethylene oxide headgroup of the C12EO8 compared to C12EO5.

Saponins are highly surface active glycosides, derived from a wide range of plant species. Their ability to produce stable foams and emulsions has stimulated their applications in beverages, foods, and cosmetics. To explore a wider range of potential applications, their surface mixing properties with conventional surfactants have been investigated. The competitive adsorption of the triterpenoid saponin escin with an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, at the air-water interface has been studied by neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension. The NR measurements, at concentrations above the mixed critical micelle concentration, demonstrate the impact of the relative surface activities of the two components. The surface mixing is highly nonideal and can be described quantitatively by the pseudophase approximation with the inclusion of the quadratic and cubic terms in the excess free energy of mixing. Hence, the surface mixing is highly asymmetrical and reflects both the electrostatic and steric contributions to the intermolecular interactions. The relative importance of the steric contribution is reinforced by the observation that the micelle mixing is even more nonideal than the surface mixing. The mixing properties result in the surface adsorption being largely dominated by the SDS over the composition and concentration range explored. The results and their interpretation provide an important insight into the wider potential for mixing saponins with more conventional surfactants.

Hypothesis Biomimetic liquid crystalline systems are widely used in skin care cosmetics and topical pharmaceutical preparations. Our ability to rationally design such formulations, however, is hampered by our incomplete understanding of their structure on the nanoscale.ExperimentsUsing polarized light microscopy and small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering, the molecular architecture and properties of a barrier formulation prepared from distearoylphosphatidylcholine mixed with long-chained fatty acid and alcohols, with and without antimicrobial pentanediols are directly probed. The nature and composition of the phases identified are determined through small-angle neutron scattering studies using chain-deuterated components, and the detailed structure and dynamics of the gel network lamellae are determined through molecular dynamics simulations. FindingsThe formulations show molecular ordering with long and short periodicity lamellar phases and there is little change in these structures caused by changes in temperature, drying, or the application of shear stress. The diol-free formulation is demonstrated to be self-preserving, and the added pentanediols are shown to distribute within the interlamellar regions where they limit availability of water for microbial growth. In culmination of these studies, we develop a more complete picture of these complex biomimetic preparations, and thereby enable their structure-based design.

The structures of layers of three different dodecylcarboxybetaine surfactants adsorbed at the air-water interface have been determined by neutron reflection. The zwitterionic compounds differed in the length of the spacer separating the quaternary ammonium and carboxylate groups, which was (CH2)1, (CH2)4, or (CH2)8. The limiting area per molecule was found to be 45, 52, or 84 Å(2), respectively, and compared reasonably with results from surface tension showing that the Gibbs prefactor is 1 in each case. Isotopic labeling was used to distinguish between the position of the alkyl and spacer groups in the layer. The spacer was found to be well-immersed in water for the (CH2)1 and (CH2)4 spacers but significantly above water for the (CH2)8 spacer. The distribution of the (CH2)8 spacer along the surface normal was found to be similar to that of the dodecyl group; i.e., it projects out of the water, contrary to an earlier hypothesis that it forms a loop. Comparison of the overlap of water with dodecyl and spacer groups also indicates that the (CH2)8 spacer is well out of the water. This in turn suggests that the anionic carboxylic acid group, which is dissociated in solution, is not ionized in the adsorbed layer. A further observation is that the dodecylcarboxybetaine with the (CH2)8 spacer reaches surface saturation at one-tenth of the critical micelle concentration. This is highly unusual and is attributed to the long spacer destabilizing the micelle relative to the surface layer.

Creams are multi-component semi-solid emulsions that find widespread utility across a wide range of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and personal care products, and they also feature prominently in veterinary preparations and processed foodstuffs. The internal architectures of these systems, however, have to date been inferred largely through macroscopic and/or indirect experimental observations and so they are not well-characterized at the molecular level. Moreover, while their long-term stability and shelf-life, and their aesthetics and functional utility are critically dependent upon their molecular structure, there is no real understanding yet of the structural mechanisms that underlie the potential destabilizing effects of additives like drugs, anti-oxidants or preservatives, and no structure-based rationale to guide product formulation. In the research reported here we sought to address these deficiencies, making particular use of small-angle neutron scattering and exploiting the device of H/D contrast variation, with complementary studies also performed using bright-field and polarised light microscopy, small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and steady-state shear rheology measurements. Through the convolved findings from these studies we have secured a finely detailed picture of the molecular structure of creams based on Aqueous Cream BP, and our findings reveal that the structure is quite different from the generic picture of cream structure that is widely accepted and reproduced in textbooks.

The structure and occurrence of multilayered adsorption at the air-water interface of surfactants in combination with other oppositely charged species is reviewed. The main species that trigger multilayer formation are multiply charged metal, oligo- and polyions. The structures vary from the attachment of one or two more or less complete surfactant bilayers to the initial surfactant monolayer at the air-water interface to the attachment of a greater number of bilayers with a more defective structure. The majority of the wide range of observations of such structures have been made using neutron reflectometry. The possible mechanisms for the attraction of surfactant bilayers to an air-water interface are discussed and particular attention is given to the question of whether these structures are true equilibrium structures.

During the formulation of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), nonionic surfactants are commonly added to attenuate structural rearrangement caused by adsorption/desorption at interfaces during processing, shipping, and storage. We examined the adsorption of a mAb (COE-3) at the SiO2/water interface in the presence of pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5), polysorbate 80 (PS80-20EO), and a polysorbate 80 analogue with seven ethoxylates (PS80-7EO). Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to follow COE-3 dynamic adsorption, and neutron reflection was used to determine interfacial structure and composition. Neither PS80-20EO nor C12E5 had a notable affinity for COE-3 or the interface under the conditions studied and thus did not prevent COE-3 adsorption. In contrast, PS80-7EO did coadsorb but did not influence the dynamic process or the equilibrated amount of absorbed COE-3. Near equilibration, COE-3 underwent structural rearrangement and PS80-7EO started to bind the COE-3 interfacial layer and subsequently formed a well-defined surfactant bilayer via self-assembly. The resultant interfacial layer comprised an inner mAb layer of about 70 Å thickness and an outer surfactant layer of a further 70 Å, with distinct transitional regions across the mAb–surfactant and surfactant–bulk water boundaries. Once formed, such interfacial layers were very robust and worked to prevent further mAb adsorption, desorption, and structural rearrangement. Such robust interfacial layers could be anticipated to exist for formulated mAbs stored in type II glass vials; further research is required to understand the behavior of these layers for siliconized glass syringes.

The interaction of nonionic surfactant hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6) with a reconstituted cuticular wheat wax film has been investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry and neutron reflection (NR) to help understand the role of the leaf wax barrier during pesticide uptake, focusing on the mimicry of the actions adjuvants impose on the physical integrity and transport of the cuticular wax films against surfactant concentration. As the C12E6 concentration was increased up to the critical micelle concentration (CMC = 0.067 mM), an increasing amount of surfactant mass was deposited onto the wax film. Alongside surface adsorption, C12E6 was also observed to penetrate the wax film, which is evident from the NR measurements using fully protonated and chain-deuterated surfactants. Furthermore, surfactant action upon the model wax film was found to be physically reversible below the CMC, as water rinsing could readily remove the adsorbed surfactant, leaving the wax film in its original state. Above the CMC, the detergency action of the surfactant became dominant, and a significant proportion of the wax film was removed, causing structural damage. The results thus reveal that both water and C12E6 could easily penetrate the wax film throughout the concentration range measured, indicating a clear pathway for the transport of active ingredients while the removal of the wax components above the CMC must have enhanced the transport process. As the partial removal of the wax film could also expose the underlying cutaneous substrate to the environment and undermine the plant’s health, this study has a broad implication to the roles of surfactants in crop care.

Small-angle neutron scattering experiments, supported by molecular dynamics simulations, have been performed on a range of compositions of the [C2mim]1−x[C12mim]x[Tf2N] ionic liquid mixture system. Isotopic contrast variation, through selective deuteration of both cations, has been used to assist in fitting the data to different scattering models. These data, and subsequent fitting, show that the structure of the ionic liquid mixtures changes substantially as a function of composition. Mixtures where x < 0.32 are dominated by aggregates of amphiphilic [C12mim]+ ions in the relatively polar [C2mim][Tf2N] solvent. Compositions where x > 0.32 can be described as bicontinuous, containing networks of both polar and non-polar domains, where the C12 chains of the [C12mim]+ ions percolate through the system to form a continuous non-polar sub-phase. Temperature-dependent scattering experiments suggest that there is relatively little change in bulk structure in these liquids between 20 and 60 °C. The presence of water, however, does influence some aspects of the liquid structure in a composition that is rich in [C2mim][Tf2N] (where x = 0.24).

Saponins are a class of bio-surfactants obtained from a wide variety of plant species. They are surface active glycosides which are used in the stabilisation of foams and emulsions in many food, drink and cosmetic applications. Their wider utilisation and application will involve their mixture with different synthetic and bio-derived surfactants, proteins and polymers. Understanding the mixing properties of saponins with other surfactants at surfaces and in self-assembly is key to their wider exploitation; and the focus here is on triterpenoid saponin escin and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS. Previous analysis of the surface adsorption and critical micelle concentration, cmc, data using the pseudo phase approximation, PPA, indicate that the micelle mixing is more non-ideal than the surface mixing. The non-ideality is associated with the packing constraints arising from the quite different molecular structures and how this impacts upon the mixture self-assembly is probed here. To address specifically the self-assembly properties of saponin-surfactant mixtures, small angle neutron scattering, SANS, has been used to explore the nature of mixed micelles of escin and SDS. The SANS data for the escin / SDS mixtures are modelled as globular ellipsoidal micelles. The micelles exhibit an overall increase in size and aggregation number as the solution becomes richer in escin, and the evolution in micelle size goes through a minimum at relatively rich SDS solutions. The results illustrate the impact of the disparity in the molecular structures of escin and SDS on the self-assembly, and provides an insight into the factors affecting the departure from ideal mixing.

The ester sulfonate anionic surfactants are a potentially valuable class of sustainable surfactants. The micellar growth, associated rheological changes, and the onset of precipitation are important consequences of the addition of electrolyte and especially multi-valent electrolytes in anionic surfactants. Small angle neutron scattering, SANS, has been used to investigate the self-assembly and the impact of different valence electrolytes on the self-assembly of a range of ester sulfonate surfactants with subtly different molecular structures. The results show that in the absence of electrolyte small globular micelles form, and in the presence of NaCl, and AlCl3 relatively modest micellar growth occurs before the onset of precipitation. The micellar growth is more pronounced for the longer unbranched and branched alkyl chain lengths. Whereas changing the headgroup geometry from methyl ester to ethyl ester has in general a less profound impact. The study highlights the importance of relative counterion binding strengths and shows how the surfactant structure affects the counterion binding and hence the micelle structure. The results have important consequences for the response of such surfactants to different operational environments.

Surface tension (ST) and neutron reflection (NR) measurements have been made on a series of mixtures of two ionic surfactants, one anionic (SDS) and one cationic (C12TAB), with the two zwitterionic surfactants dodecyldimethylammonium propanesulfonate (C12SB) and dodecyldimethylammonium acetate C12CB. The anionic surfactant SDS interacts equally strongly with both zwitterionics and the C12TAB less strongly. For the SDS-C12SB mixtures simultaneous fitting of ST and NR data made it possible to use the pseudophase approximation with an expansion of the excess free energy, GE, up to and including the quartic term. GE is asymmetric for the adsorbed layer and the minimum occurs at a surface mole fraction, xSDS, of 0.38 with a depth of -2.8RT. NR was also used to follow the adsorption above the CMC, and the changes showed that the intramicellar interaction is more asymmetric, but weaker than the surface interaction with a depth of GE of -2.2RT at the minimum of xSDS = 0.23. A strong synergy in the total surface excess was observed above the mixed CMC with an enhancement over the adsorption of the pure components of about 45%, which appears to result from a sharp variation of the packing with surface composition coupled with the effects of the strongly asymmetric micellization. NR data on SDS-C12CB showed that GE for both surface and micelles was similarly asymmetric to those for SDS-C12SB, but there is no strong synergy in adsorption. This is attributed to the more rigid headgroup. C12TAB-C12SB has an asymmetric GE for both surface and micelle similar to those for SDS-C12SB but the depths are smaller at -0.6RT and -0.5RT, respectively, and there is no synergy in the total adsorption.

Hypothesis Nonionic surfactants are used as adjuvants in agri-sprays to stabilise pesticides, but what happens when pesticide-loaded micelles are brought into direct contact with plant leaves? As pesticide solubilisation dehydrates the micellar shell and increases the effective hydrophobicity of the surfactant, we hypothesise that these micelles would uptake plant waxes and alter the amount of pesticide solubilized as a result of the re-equilibrating process. Experiments The solubility of the pesticide cyprodinil (CP) and its effect on the shape of hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6) micelles were studied using changes in cloud point, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Similarly, the solubility of wheat leaf waxes was examined, as was the effect of adding leaf waxes to pre-dissolved cyprodinil in micellar C12E6. Findings Wax solubilisation caused pesticide release and shell hydration, and shortened the length of the cylindrical micelles of the CP loaded C12E6. Temperature increase led to a significant rise in the amount of the dissolved waxes, increased pesticide release, increased micellar length, and caused shrinkage and dehydration of the shell. This study indicates that agrochemical sprays are capable of dissolving leaf waxes, and may trigger pesticide release from surfactant micelles upon contact with plant surfaces.

Cryogenic wormlike micellar solutions which possess a freezing point far below 0 °C while retaining rheological properties similar to those of ordinary wormlike micellar solutions are fabricated from the self-assembly of a C22-tailed monounsaturated zwitterionic surfactant, erucyl dimethyl amidopropyl betaine, in an ethylene glycol/water co-solvent at subzero temperature. Such fluids may find potential applications in fields where viscoelasticity is highly desired at subfreezing temperatures.

The transition from monolayer to multilayer adsorption at the air-water interface in the presence of multivalent counterions has been demonstrated for a limited range of anionic surfactants which exhibit increased tolerance to precipitation in the presence of multivalent counterions. Understanding the role of molecular structure in determining the transition to surface ordering is an important aspect of the phenomenon. The focus of the paper is on the alkyl ester sulfonate, AES, surfactants; a promising group of anionic surfactants, with the potential for improved performance and biocompatibility. Neutron reflectivity measurements were made in aqueous solution and in the presence of NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and AlCl3, for a range of alkyl ester sulfonate surfactants, in which the headgroup and alkyl chain geometries were manipulated. In the regions of monolayer adsorption changing the AES headgroup and alkyl chain geometries results in an increased saturation adsorption and in a more gradual decrease in the adsorption at low concentrations, consistent with a greater adsorption efficiency. Changing the AES headgroup and alkyl chain geometries also results in changes in the transition from monolayer adsorption to more ordered surface structures with the addition of AlCl3 and mixed multivalent electrolytes. A more limited surface layering is observed for the ethyl ester sulfonate, EES, with a C14 alkyl chain. Replacing the C14 alkyl chain with a C18 isostearic chain results in only monolayer adsorption. The results demonstrate the role and importance of the surfactant molecular structure in determining the nature of the surface adsorption in the presence of different electrolytes, and in the tendency to form extended surface multilayer structures.

The strong binding of Al3+ trivalent counterions to the anionic surfactants sodium polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ether sulfate and α-methyl ester sulfonate results in surface multilayer formation at the air-water interface. In contrast the divalent and monovalent counterions Ca2+ and Na+ result only in monolayer adsorption. Competitive counterion adsorption has been extensively studied in the context of surfactant precipitation and re-dissolution, but remains an important feature in understanding this surface ordering and how it can be manipulated. The α-methyl ester sulfonate surfactants are a promising class of anionic surfactants which have much potential for improved performance in many applications, greater tolerance to extreme solvent conditions such as water hardness, biocompatibility and sustainable production. Hence in this study we have used neutron reflectivity to extend previous studies on the surface ordering of the α-methyl ester sulfonate surfactant, sodium tetradecanoic 2-sulfo 1-methyl ester, in the presence of electrolyte to investigate the role of binary mixtures of electrolytes, AlCl3/CaCl2, and AlCl3/MgCl2. In the mixed electrolytes the evolution of the surface structure, from monolayer to multilayer with increasing AlCl3 concentration, is observed. It is broadly similar to that reported for the addition of only AlCl3. However with increasing CaCl2 concentration the structural evolution is shifted progressively to higher AlCl3 concentrations. Similar observations occur for the AlCl3/MgCl2 mixtures. However the presence of the MgCl2 results in an additional phenomenon; the partial co-adsorption of a more compact lamellar structure which exists until the highest AlCl3 concentrations. The results demonstrate the importance of the competitive adsorption of different counterions in driving and controlling the formation of surface multilayer structures with anionic surfactants. Furthermore it offers a facile route to the manipulation of these surface structures.

Micellisation of surfactants in deep eutectic solvents has been recently demonstrated to provide a controllable way to modify micelle morphology. Ion-pair interactions between the solvent and the surfactant headgroup were identified as affecting the micellisation by modifying the charge density of the micelle. Here we explore the micellisation of dodecylsulfate surfactants with different counterions (Li+, Cs+, Mg2+, Bmim+, Emim+, cholinium+) dissolved in two deep eutectic solvents: choline chloride:urea and choline chloride:glycerol. Surface tension results show a solvent and counterion dependence of the CMC of the surfactants. Small-angle neutron scattering was subsequently used to investigate the morphology of the micelles formed. The results show that the elongation of the micelles is strongly dependent on the solvent, showing more elongated aggregates in choline chloride:urea than in choline chloride:glycerol. The morphology of micelles in DES was also found to depend on the counterion, where the affinity of binding showed similarities to that in water.

Π-conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) are under investigation as photoluminescent agents for diagnostics and bioimaging. To determine whether the choice of surfactant can improve CPN properties and prevent protein adsorption, five non-ionic polyethylene glycol alkyl ether surfactants were used to produce CPNs from three representative π-conjugated polymers. The surfactant structure did not influence size or yield, which were dependent on the nature of the conjugated polymer. Hydrophobic interaction chromatography, contact angle, quartz crystal microbalance and neutron reflectivity studies were used to assess the affinity of the surfactant to the conjugated polymer surface, and indicated that all surfactants were displaced by the addition of a model serum protein. In summary, CPN preparation methods which rely on surface coating of a conjugated polymer core with amphiphilic surfactants may produce systems with good yields and colloidal stability in vitro, but may be susceptible to significant surface alterations in physiological fluids.

Significantly enhanced adsorption at the air-water interface arises in polyelectrolyte/ionic surfactant mixtures, such as poly(ethylenimine)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (PEI/SDS), down to relatively low surfactant concentrations due to a strong surface interaction between the polyelectrolyte and surfactant. In the region of charge neutralization this can result in precipitation or coacervation and give rise to undesirable properties in many applications. Ethoxylation of the PEI can avoid precipitation, but can also considerably weaken the interaction. Localization of the ethoxylation can overcome these shortcomings. Further manipulation of the polyelectrolyte-surfactant interaction can be achieved by selective ethoxylation and propoxylation of the PEI amine groups. Neutron reflectivity and surface tension data are presented here which show how the polyelectrolyte-surfactant interaction can be manipulated by tuning the PEI structure. Using deuterium labeled surfactant and polymer the neutron reflectivity measurements provide details of the surface composition and structure of the adsorbed layer. The general pattern of behavior is that at low surfactant concentrations there is enhanced surfactant adsorption due to the strong surface interaction; whereas around the region of the SDS critical micellar concentration, cmc, the surface is partially depleted of surfactant in favor bulk aggregate structures. The results presented here show how these characteristic features of the adsorption are affected by the degree of ethoxylation and propoxylation. Increasing the degree of propoxylation enhances the surfactant adsorption, whereas varying the degree of ethoxylation has a less pronounced effect. In the region of surfactant surface depletion increasing both the degree of ethoxylation and propoxylation result in an increased surface depletion.

The blooming of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the influence of plasticizer (glycerol) on the surfactant distribution in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films have been explored by neutron reflectometry (NR) and ion beam analysis techniques. When in binary films with PVA, deuterated SDS (d25-SDS) forms a surface excess corresponding to a wetting layer of the surfactant molecules at the film surface. The magnitude of this surface excess increased significantly in the presence of the plasticizer, and the surfactant was largely excluded from the PVA subphase. NR revealed smectic nanostructures for both SDS and glycerol components within this surface excess in plasticized films. This combined layer comprises surfactant lamellae, separated by interstitial glycerol-rich layers, which is only formed in the plasticized films and persists throughout the surface excess. Atomic force microscopy micrographs of the film surfaces revealed platelike structures in the plasticized PVA, which were consistent with the rigid defects in the surfactant-rich lamellae. The formation of these structures arises from the synergistic surface segregation of SDS and glycerol, evidenced by surface tensiometry. Cloud point analysis of bulk samples indicates a transition at ∼55% water content, below which phase separation occurs in ternary films. This transition is likely to be necessary to form the thick wetting layer observed and therefore indicates that film components remain mobile beyond this point in the drying process.

This work studied gemini-like surfactants formed from anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic charged bola-type diamines with hydrophilic or hydrophobic spacers of different lengths using surface tension, small angle neutron scattering, isothermal titration microcalorimetry and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the surface tension at CMC (γCMC) for all the diamine/SDS mixtures are markedly lower than that of SDS. The shorter diamines reduce γCMC to a greater extent regardless of the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the diamines. Meanwhile, either the hydrophobic diamine with a longer spacer or the hydrophilic diamine with a shorter spacer is more beneficial to decrease CMC and leads to the transition from spherical micelles into rodlike or wormlike micelles. This is principally because of the formation of gemini-like surfactants by the electrostatic binding between SDS and the diamines, where the electrostatic repulsion between the adjacent headgroups of SDS becomes much weaker due to the electrostatic binding of oppositely charged diamine with SDS, and the longer hydrophobic spacer may also bend into the hydrophobic domain of micelles to promote micellar growth. However, the hydrophilic spacers are more compatible with the headgroup region, leading to micelles with a larger curvature. This work contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the properties of constructed gemini-like surfactants and the natures of connecting molecules, and provides guidance to efficiently improve the performance of surfactants.

The methyl ester sulfonates represent a promising group of anionic surfactants which have the potential for improved performance and biocompatibility in a range of applications. Their solution properties, in particular their tolerance to hard water, suggests that surface ordering may occur in the presence of multi-valent counterion. Understanding their adsorption properties in a range of different circumstances is key to the exploitation of their potential. Neutron reflectivity and surface tension have been used to characterise the adsorption at the air-aqueous solution interface of the anionic surfactant sodium tetradecanoic 2-sulfo 1-methyl ester, C14MES, in the absence of electrolyte and in the presence of mono, di, and tri-valent counterions, Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+. In particular the emphasis has been on exploring the tendency to form layered structures at the interface. In the absence of electrolyte and in the presence of NaCl and CaCl2 and AlCl3 at low concentrations monolayer adsorption is observed, and the addition of electrolyte results in enhanced adsorption. In the presence of NaCl and CaCl2 only monolayer adsorption is observed. However at higher AlCl3 concentrations surface multilayer formation is observed, in which the number of bilayers at the surface depends upon the surfactant and AlCl3 concentrations.

We describe a new laboratory synthesis of the α-methyl ester sulfonates based on direct sulfonation of the methyl ester by SO3 introduced from the vapor phase. This was used to synthesize a chain deuterated sample of αC14MES, which was then used to measure the surface excess of αC14MES directly at the air/water interface over a wide range of concentration using neutron reflection. The adsorption isotherm could be fitted to an empirical equation close to a Langmuir isotherm and gave a limiting surface excess of (3.4 ± 0.1) × 10-6 mol m-2 in the absence of added electrolyte. The neutron-measured surface excesses were combined with the integrated Gibbs equation to fit the variation in surface tension with concentration (σ-ln C curve). The fit was exact provided that we used a prefactor consistent with the counterion at the surface being an impurity divalent ion, as has previously been found for sodium diethylhexylsulfosuccinate (aerosol OT or AOT) and various perfluorooctanoates. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was determined from this fit to be 2.4 ± 0.3 mM in the absence of electrolyte. In the presence of 100 mM NaCl, this contamination was suppressed and the σ-ln C curve could be fitted using the integrated Gibbs equation with the expected prefactor of 1. The new data were used to reinterpret measurements by Danov et al. on an unpurified sample of αC14MES for which computer refinement was used to try to eliminate the effects of the impurities.

Ethoxylated polysorbate Tween nonionic surfactants are extensively used as foam and emulsion stabilizers and in aqueous solution form globular micelles. The ethoxylated polysorbate surfactants with higher degrees of ethoxylation than the Tween surfactants exhibit some interesting self-assembly properties. Small-angle neutron scattering, SANS, measurements have revealed intermicellar interactions which are more pronounced than the hard-sphere excluded volume interactions normally associated with nonionic surfactant micelles. The interactions are interpreted as arising from the partial charge on the ether oxygen of the ethylene oxide groups. This gives rise to an effective net negative charge on the micelles, which has been determined from the SANS data and zeta potential measurements. For degrees of ethoxylation of ⩽20, the effect is relatively small. The interaction increases with increasing ethoxylation such that for a degree of ethoxylation of 50 the interaction is comparable to that of ionic surfactant micelles. Unlike the intermicellar interaction in ionic surfactant micellar solutions, which results from the charge on the micelle arising from the partial binding of counterions, the interaction between ethoxthylated polysorbate surfactant micelles is unaffected by the addition of electrolyte.

Oligoamines and biogenic amines (naturally occurring oligoamines) are small flexible polycations. They interact strongly with anionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS. This results in enhanced adsorption and the formation of layered structures and the formation of layered structures at the air-water interface which depends on surfactant concentration and solution pH. The effect of changing the surfactant headgroup geometry on that interaction and subsequent adsorption is reported here. Neutron reflectivity, NR, results for the surface adsorption of the anionic surfactant sodium diethylene glycol monododecyl ether sulfate, SLES, with the biogenic amine, spermine, are presented, and contrasted with previous data for SDS/spermine mixtures. The enhancement in the adsorption of the surfactant at the air-water interface where monolayer adsorption occurs is similar for both surfactants. However the regions of surfactant concentration and solution pH where surface multilayer adsorption occurs is less extensive for the SLES/spermine mixtures, and occurs only at low pH. The results show how changing the headgroup geometry by the introduction of the ethylene oxide linker group between the alkyl chain and sulfate headgroup modifies the polyamine - surfactant interaction. The increased steric constraint from the polyethylene oxide group disrupts the conditions for surface multilayer formation at the higher pH values. This has important consequences for applications where the modification or manipulation of the surface properties are required.

The oligoamines, such as ethylenediamine to pentaethylenetetramine, and the aliphatic biogenic amines, such as putrescine, spermidine and spermine, strongly interact with anionic surfactants, such as sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS. It has been shown that this results in pronounced surfactant adsorption at the air-water interface and the transition from monolayer to multilayer adsorption which depends upon solution pH and oligoamine structure. In the neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension, ST, results presented here the role of the oligoamine structure on the adsorption of SDS is investigated more fully using a range of different biogenic amines. The effect of the extent of the intra-molecular spacing between amine groups on the adsorption has been extended by comparing results for cadavarine with putrescine and ethylenediamine. The impact of more complex biogenic amine structures on the adsorption has been investigated with the aromatic phenethylamine, and the heterocyclic amines histamine and melamine. The results provide an important insight into how surfactant adsorption at interfaces can be manipulated by the addition of biogenic amines, and into the role of solution pH and oligoamine structure in modifying the interaction between the surfactant and oligoamine. The results impact greatly upon potential applications and in understanding some of the important biological functions of biogenic amines.

Despite extensive studies with many experimental techniques, the morphology and structure of the self-assembled aggregates of quaternary alkyl ammonium bromides (CnTABs; where n denotes the number of hydrocarbons in the surfactant tail) at the solid-liquid interface remains controversial, with results from atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging pointing to a variety of surface aggregates such as cylinders and surface micelles, whilst surface force measurements and neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements reporting bilayer structures. Using a home-built liquid cell that employs the "bending mica" method, we have performed unprecedented synchrotron X-ray reflectometry (XRR) measurements to study the adsorption behaviour of a C nTAB series (n = 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18) at the mica-water interface at different surfactant concentrations. We find that our XRR data cannot be described by surface aggregates such as cylindrical and spherical structures reported by AFM studies. In addition we have observed that the bilayer thickness, surface coverage and the tilt angle all depend on the surfactant concentration and surfactant hydrocarbon chain length n, and that the bilayer thickness reaches a maximum value at approximately the critical micellisation concentration (∼1 cmc) for all the CnTABs investigated. We propose that CnTABs form disordered bilayer structures on mica at concentrations below cmc, whilst at ∼1 cmc they form more densely packed bilayers with the tails possibly tilted at an angle θt ranging from ∼40 to 60° with respect to the surface normal in order to satisfy the packing constraints due to the mica lattice charge, i.e. so that the cross-section area of the tilted chain would match that of the area of the lattice charge (As ≅ 46.8 Å2). As the surfactant concentration further increases, we find that the bilayer thickness decreases, and we ascribe this to the desorption of surfactant molecules, which recovers certain disorder and fluidity in the chain and thus leads to interdigitated bilayers again. In light of our XRR results, previously unattainable at the mica-water interface, we suggest that the surface aggregates observed by AFM could be induced by the interaction between the scanning probe and the surfactant layer, thus representing transient surface aggregation morphologies; whereas the CnTAB bilayers we observe with XRR are intrinsic structures under quiescent conditions. The suggestion of such quiescent bilayers will have fundamental implications to processes such as lubrication, self-assembly under confinement, detergency and wetting, where the morphology and structure of surfactant layers at the solid-liquid interface is an important consideration. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We describe here the design of a liquid cell specific for synchrotron X-ray reflectometry (XRR) characterisation of soft matter nanofilms at the mica-water interface. The feature of the cell is a "bending mica" method: by slightly bending the mica substrate over an underling cylinder the rigidity of the mica sheet along the bending axis is enhanced, providing sufficient flatness along the apex of the cylinder as required by XRR measurements. Using this cell, we have performed XRR measurements for a number of systems and in this article we show example results: (1) a cationic surfactant, C 16TAB; (2) a zwitterionic surfactant, C 12H 25PC; (3) a semi-fluorinated surfactant, F 4H 11(d)TAB; and (4) surface complex of an anionic fluorinated surfactant, CsPFN, and a positively charged polymer, PEI. For the data analysis we have taken into account the mica crystal truncation rod, i.e. the reflectivity from the mica substrate, and fitted the data with a custom Java™ based software package.
