Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising technology to extract sustainable salinity gradient energy. However, the RED technology has not reached its full potential due to membrane efficiency and fouling and the complex interplay between ionic flows and fluidic configurations. We investigate renewable power generation by harnessing salinity gradient energy during reverse electrodialysis using a lab-scaled fluidic cell, consisting of two reservoirs separated by a nanoporous ion exchange membrane, under various flow rates (qf) and salt-concentration difference (Δc). The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the single RED unit reveals a linear dependence, similar to an electrochemical cell. The experimental results show that the change of inflow velocity has an insignificant impact on the I-V data for a wide range of flow rates explored (0.01–1 mL/min), corresponding to a low-Peclet number regime. Both the maximum RED power density (Pc,m) and open-circuit voltage (ϕ0) increase with increasing Δc. On the one hand, the RED cell’s internal resistance (Rc) empirically reveals a power-law dependence of Rc∝Δc−α. On the other hand, the open-circuit voltage shows a logarithmic relationship of ϕ0=BlnΔc+β. These experimental results are consistent with those by a nonlinear numerical simulation considering a single charged nanochannel, suggesting that parallelization of charged nano-capillaries might be a good upscaling model for a nanoporous membrane for RED applications.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an electro-membrane process to harvest renewable energy from salinity gradients. RED process models have been developed in the past, but they mostly assume that only NaCl is present in the feedwaters, which results in unrealistically high predictions. In the present work, an existing simple model is extended to accommodate the presence of magnesium ions and sulfate in the feedwaters, and potentially even more complex mixtures. All power loss mechanisms deriving from the presence of multivalent ions are included in the new model: increased membrane electrical resistance, uphill transport of multivalent ions from the river to the seawater compartment, and membrane permselectivity loss. This new model is validated with experimental and literature data of membrane electrical resistance (at 10 mol. % MgCl2 for the CEMs and 25 mol. % Na2SO4 for the AEMs), RED stack performance (up to 50 mol. % MgCl2 or Na2SO4 in the feedwaters), and ion transport (at 10 mol. % MgCl2 or Na2SO4 in the feedwaters) showing very good agreement between model predictions and experimental data. Finally, we showed that the developed model not only describes experimental data but can also predict RED performances under a variety of conditions and cross-flow configurations (single-stage with and without electrode segmentation, multi-stage in co-current and counter-current mode) and feedwater compositions (only NaCl, with Na2SO4, with MgCl2, and with MgSO4). It thus provides a very valuable tool to design and evaluate RED process systems.

The increasing share of renewables in electric grids nowadays causes a growing daily and seasonal mismatch between electricity generation and demand. In this regard, novel energy storage systems need to be developed, to allow large-scale storage of the excess electricity during low-demand time, and its distribution during peak demand time. Acid–base flow battery (ABFB) is a novel and environmentally friendly technology based on the reversible water dissociation by bipolar membranes, and it stores electricity in the form of chemical energy in acid and base solutions. The technology has already been demonstrated at the laboratory scale, and the experimental testing of the first 1 kW pilot plant is currently ongoing. This work aims to describe the current development and the perspectives of the ABFB technology. In particular, we discuss the main technical challenges related to the development of battery components (membranes, electrolyte solutions, and stack design), as well as simulated scenarios, to demonstrate the technology at the kW–MW scale. Finally, we present an economic analysis for a first 100 kW commercial unit and suggest future directions for further technology scale-up and commercial deployment.

Although Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) is most commonly known as a selective separation technology used for the production of sustainable energy, it can also serve as a valuable pre-desalination tool. By coupling RED to Reverse Osmosis (RO) for seawater desalination: (1) sustainable energy is produced in the RED process and (2) seawater is partially desalinated prior to RO thus, decreasing the energy demand. In this study, secondary-treated wastewater is proposed as the low salinity source in RED and suitable pre-treatment techniques for this effluent are investigated. Although it is generally accepted that RED is less prone to fouling than typical pressure driven membrane processes, results showed that pre-treatment is a key to ensure efficient operation of the wastewater-seawater RED. Both 100 µm filtration and rapid sand filtration proved to be suitable, with an increase in pressure drop of only 0.09–0.18 bar and a permselectivity decrease of only approximately 20% during 40 days of continuous operation. Conversely, River bank filtration did not perform better than the non-pretreated sample. As such, 100 µm filtration and rapid sand filtration are considered suitable, robust, and cost efficient pre-treatment options for wastewater fed RED, enabling the improvement of the hybrid process of RED-RO seawater desalination.

The paper shows the possibility of using a microheterogeneous model to estimate the transport numbers of counterions through ion-exchange membranes. It is possible to calculate the open-circuit potential and power density of the reverse electrodialyzer using the data obtained. Eight samples of heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes were studied, two samples for each of the following types of membranes: Ralex CM, Ralex AMH, MK-40, and MA-41. Samples in each pair differed in the year of production and storage conditions. In the work, these samples were named “batch 1” and “batch 2”. According to the microheterogeneous model, to calculate the transport numbers of counterions, it is necessary to use the concentration dependence of the electrical conductivity and diffusion permeability. The electrolyte used was a sodium chloride solution with a concentration range corresponding to the conditional composition of river water and the salinity of the Black Sea. During the research, it was found that samples of Ralex membranes of different batches have similar characteristics over the entire range of investigated concentrations. The calculated values of the transfer numbers for membranes of different batches differ insignificantly: ±0.01 for Ralex AMH in 1 M NaCl. For MK-40 and MA-41 membranes, a significant scatter of characteristics was found, especially in concentrated solutions. As a result, in 1 M NaCl, the transport numbers differ by ±0.05 for MK-40 and ±0.1 for MA-41. The value of the open circuit potential for the Ralex membrane pair showed that the experimental values of the potential are slightly lower than the theoretical ones. At the same time, the maximum calculated power density is higher than the experimental values. The maximum power density achieved in the experiment on reverse electrodialysis was 0.22 W/m2, which is in good agreement with the known literature data for heterogeneous membranes. The discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical data may be the difference in the characteristics of the membranes used in the reverse electrodialysis process from the tested samples and does not consider the shadow effect of the spacer in the channels of the electrodialyzer.

As wearable technologies redefine the way people exchange information, receive entertainment, and monitor health, the development of sustainable power sources that capture energy from the user's everyday activities garners increasing interest. Electric fishes, such as the electric eel and the torpedo ray, provide inspiration for such a power source with their ability to generate massive discharges of electricity solely from the metabolic processes within their bodies. Inspired by their example, the device presented in this work harnesses electric power from ion gradients established by capturing the carbon dioxide (CO2) from human breath. Upon localized exposure to CO2, this novel adaptation of reverse electrodialysis chemically generates ion gradients from a single initial solution uniformly distributed throughout the device instead of requiring the active circulation of two different external solutions. A thorough analysis of the relationship between electrical output and the concentration of carbon capture agent (monoethanolamine, MEA), the amount of CO2 captured, and the device geometry informs device design. The prototype device presented here harvests enough energy from a breath‐generated ion gradient to power small electronic devices, such as a light‐emitting diode (LED)., Carbon capture technology is combined with reverse electrodialysis to harvest energy from an ion gradient generated by the reaction of monoethanolamine with carbon dioxide in human breath. Several factors are characterized that affect power output, and ultimately this work demonstrates the ability to power an light‐emitting diode with the ion gradient generated by breath.

Fouling is a pressing issue for harvesting salinity gradient energy with reverse electrodialysis (RED). In this work, antifouling membranes were fabricated by surface modification of a commercial anion exchange membrane with zwitterionic layers. Either zwitterionic monomers or zwitterionic brushes were applied on the surface. Zwitterionic monomers were grafted to the surface by deposition of a polydopamine layer followed by an aza-Michael reaction with sulfobetaine. Zwitterionic brushes were grafted on the surface by deposition of polydopamine modified with a surface initiator for subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization to obtain polysulfobetaine. As expected, the zwitterionic layers did increase the membrane hydrophilicity. The antifouling behavior of the membranes in RED was evaluated using artificial river and seawater and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate as the model foulant. The zwitterionic monomers are effective in delaying the fouling onset, but the further build-up of the fouling layer is hardly affected, resulting in similar power density losses as for the unmodified membranes. Membranes modified with zwitterionic brushes show a high potential for application in RED as they not only delay the onset of fouling but they also slow down the growth of the fouling layer, thus retaining higher power density outputs.

In this study, novel asymmetric integral cation exchange membranes were prepared by the wet phase inversion of sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) solutions. SPSf with different degrees of sulfonation (DS) was synthesized by variation in the amount of chlorosulfonic acid utilized as a sulfonating agent. The characterization of SPSf samples was performed using FTIR and 1H-NMR techniques. SPSf with a DS of 0.31 (0.67 meq/g corresponding ion exchange capacity) was chosen to prepare the membranes, as polymers with a higher DS resulted in poor mechanical properties and excessive swelling in water. By a systematic study, the opportunity to tune the properties of SPSf membranes by acting on the composition of the polymeric solution was demonstrated. The effect of two different phase inversion parameters, solvent type and co-solvent ratio, were investigated by morphological and electrochemical characterization. The best properties (permselectivity of 0.86 and electrical resistance of 6.3 Ω∙cm2) were obtained for the membrane prepared with 2-propanol (IPA):1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) in a 20:80 ratio. This membrane was further characterized in different solution concentrations to estimate its performance in a Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) operation. Water and energy are two intimately interconnected issues of strategic relevance for a sustainable industrial development. Herein, we integrated light-harvesting/self-heating membranes and salinity gradient technology with the aim to implement the innovative concept of light-to-heat-to-power conversion. Novel photothermal membranes, prepared by immobilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the top layer of microporous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix, were tested – for the first time – in a Sweep Gas Membrane Distillation (SGMD) unit applied to the desalination of synthetic seawater solution (0.5M NaCl). As a result of the ability of noble metal nanofillers to act as localized thermoplasmonic nano-heaters at membrane-feed interface for efficient water evaporation, an increase of transmembrane flux under UV radiation by about 10-fold with respect to unloaded PVDF membrane was observed. The SGMD retentate, consisting in hypersaline brine (progressively concentrated up to 4M NaCl and rejected at about 40°C) was fed to a Reverse Electrodialysis unit with the aim to harvest electrochemical energy. The maximum power density, measured for a retentate concentration increasing from 1M to 4M, raised from 0.13 to 0.9 W/m2MP (MP: RED membrane pair). Overall, the proposed integrated membrane system allowed to extract about 10% of the energy not employed for water evaporation.

Reverse electrodialysis harvests energy from salinity gradients establishing a renewable energy source. High energy efficiencies are fundamental to up-scale the process and to minimize feedwater pre-treatment and pumping costs. The present work investigates electrode segmentation to strategically optimize the output power density and energy efficiency. Electrode segmentation allows the current density to be tuned per electrode segment. Segmentation experiments were performed with a dedicated electrode configuration in a cross-flow stack using a wide range of residence times. Moreover, an experimentally validated model was extended and used to further compare single and segmented electrode configurations. While operating the electrode segments, the highest efficiencies were obtained when considering the overall power, i.e. not maximized by segment. Results show that at a given net power density (0.92 W·m−2), electrode segmentation increases the net energy efficiency from 17% to 25%, which is a relative increase of 43%. Plus, at 40% net energy efficiency the net power output for a segmented electrode configuration (0.67 W·m−2) is 39% higher than in a single electrode configuration. Higher power density reduces capital investment and higher energy efficiency reduces operating costs. Electrode segmentation increases these parameters compared to a single electrode and can be potentially applied for up-scaling.

Electrodialysis (ED) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) are enabling technologies which can facilitate renewable energy generation, dynamic energy storage, and hydrogen production from low-grade waste heat. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study for maximizing the net produced power density of RED by coupling the Navier&ndash, Stokes and Nernst&ndash, Planck equations, using the OpenFOAM software. The relative influences of several parameters, such as flow velocities, membrane topology (i.e., flat or spacer-filled channels with different surface corrugation geometries), and temperature, on the resistivity, electrical potential, and power density are addressed by applying a factorial design and a parametric study. The results demonstrate that temperature is the most influential parameter on the net produced power density, resulting in a 43% increase in the net peak power density compared to the base case, for cylindrical corrugated channels.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an electro-membrane process for the conversion of mixing energy into electricity. One important problem researchers&rsquo, face when modeling the RED process is the choice of the proper membrane transport equations. In this study, using experimental data that describe the membrane Nafion 120 in contact with NaCl aqueous solutions, the linear transport equation of irreversible thermodynamics was applied to calculate the power density of the RED system. Various simplifying assumptions about transport equation (i.e., four-, three-, and two-coefficients approaches) are proposed and discussed. We found that the two-coefficients approach, using the membrane conductivity and the apparent transport number of ions, describes the power density with good accuracy. In addition, the influence of the membrane thickness and the concentration polarization on the power density is also demonstrated.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies on electrodialysis (ED) applications in wastewater treatment, outlining the current status and the future prospect. ED is a membrane process of separation under the action of an electric field, where ions are selectively transported across ion-exchange membranes. ED of both conventional or unconventional fashion has been tested to treat several waste or spent aqueous solutions, including effluents from various industrial processes, municipal wastewater or salt water treatment plants, and animal farms. Properties such as selectivity, high separation efficiency, and chemical-free treatment make ED methods adequate for desalination and other treatments with significant environmental benefits. ED technologies can be used in operations of concentration, dilution, desalination, regeneration, and valorisation to reclaim wastewater and recover water and/or other products, e.g., heavy metal ions, salts, acids/bases, nutrients, and organics, or electrical energy. Intense research activity has been directed towards developing enhanced or novel systems, showing that zero or minimal liquid discharge approaches can be techno-economically affordable and competitive. Despite few real plants having been installed, recent developments are opening new routes for the large-scale use of ED techniques in a plethora of treatment processes for wastewater.

The performance of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) in Reverse Electrodialysis is hampered by both presence of multivalent ions and fouling phenomena, thus leading to reduced net power density. Therefore, we propose a monolayer surface modification procedure to functionalize Ralex-AEMs with poly(acrylic) acid (PAA) in order to (i) render a monovalent permselectivity, and (ii) minimize organic fouling. Membrane surface modification was carried out by putting heterogeneous AEMs in contact with a PAA-based aqueous solution for 24 h. The resulting modified membranes were firstly characterized by contact angle, water uptake, ion exchange capacity, fixed charge density, and swelling degree measurements, whereas their electrochemical responses were evaluated through cyclic voltammetry. Besides, their membrane electro-resistance was also studied via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses. Finally, membrane permselectivity and fouling behavior in the presence of humic acid were evaluated through mass transport experiments using model NaCl containing solutions. The use of modified PAA-AEMs resulted in a significantly enhanced monovalent permselectivity (sulfate rejection improved by &gt, 35%) and membrane hydrophilicity (contact angle decreased by &gt, 15%) in comparison with the behavior of unmodified Ralex-AEMs, without compromising the membrane electro-resistance after modification, thus demonstrating the technical feasibility of the proposed membrane modification procedure. This study may therefore provide a feasible way for achieving an improved Reverse Electrodialysis process efficiency.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a process to harvest renewable energy from salinity gradients. Under lab conditions with artificial salt solutions, promising results have been achieved in recent years. However, in large scale industrial applications, natural waters are used and that poses challenges such as fouling. Fouling of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) by organic matter (e.g. humic acids) has been identified as a possible cause that lowers RED performance with natural waters. In this work, natural river and seawater at the Afsluitdijk (The Netherlands) are used to study the RED performance of six different AEMs. These AEMs are characterized before and after RED experiments with natural waters. The effect of natural fouling is found to be specific for each AEM and highly dependent on their respective chemistries and associated membrane properties. Firstly, aromatic AEMs with a low swelling degree showed a permselectivity decrease as well as membrane resistance increase. Secondly, aliphatic AEMs with a medium swelling degree experienced only a membrane resistance increase. Finally, only a decrease in permselectivity was observed for aliphatic AEMs with large swelling degrees. Subsequently, the effect of AEM fouling is compared to the observed decrease in RED performance and this shows that AEM fouling can only explain a minor part of the losses in open circuit voltage (OCV). The RED power densities dropped by 15–20% over 12 days, independent of the AEMs selected, while the reduced AEM performance could only explain 2–4% of this reduction in power density. This demonstrates that next to AEM fouling, also other factors, such as spacer fouling, are expected to be the dominant fouling mechanism, reducing the performance to a much larger extent.

In this study, reverse electrodialysis power generation using an anisotropic anodic aluminum oxide membrane with nanopores of two different pore diameters is proposed and experimentally investigated for the first time. A number of experiments were carried out for various combinations of concentrations to show that the anisotropic anodic aluminum oxide membrane is superior to the conventional isotropic membrane. As a result, the highest power density that was measured from the anisotropic membrane was 15.0 mW/m2, and it was 7.2 times higher than that from the isotropic membrane. The reasons why the anisotropic membrane is superior to the isotropic membrane are explained in detail. The experiments on the anisotropic membranes with various active layer lengths and pore diameters were also conducted for exploring the effects of these engineering parameters on the power generation performance. As a result, it was shown that the length of the active layer is a more important engineering parameter than the pore diameter of the active layer. Additionally, it was also shown that a low concentration solution should be brought into contact with the active layer side of the membrane whenever an anisotropic membrane is used for reverse electrodialysis.

The benefits of wastewater (WW) reclamation to alleviate the stress of freshwater resources are counterbalanced by the required energy demand to drive the treatments. This handicap can be considerably minimized when renewable energy sources are integrated to perform this process, increasing the environmental and energy sustainability of the reclamation process. This work reports the assessment of a new strategy for WW reclamation in shoreline wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) through the conversion of the salinity gradient energy (SGE) generated in the contact between reclaimed water (RW) and seawater (SW) to electricity by the use of reverse electrodialysis (RED). Secondary effluents from the selected WWTP were further treated by a simple remediation process consisting of coagulation-flocculation and solids removal, ending with a filtration stage; the obtained RW contained 0.008 M NaCl and was used as low concentrated solution in the RED stack; besides, filtered SW with 0.5 M NaCl, was employed as high concentrated solution. The plant run for 480 h, reaching gross power up to 1.43 W/m2 without decay along the operation time indicating that no fouling issues appeared in this time period. This represents a great improvement in comparison to the results published in the literature so far; the slight increase in the salinity of RW still allowed for its further reuse. Thus, a novel and energy sustainable strategy to promote WW reclamation with simultaneous SGE recovery is presented. This work presents a novel approach combiningreverse electrodialysis(RED) and alkaline polymer electrolyte waterelectrolysis(APWEL) forrenewablehydrogen production. APWEL is fuelled bysalinitygradient power (SGP) extracted fromsulfate(SO42−)-richindustrial wastewater. The performance of a pilot-scale RED unit (200 cells, active area: 31.5 × 63.5 cm2), using salt solutions mimicking sulfate-rich waste streams (0.01–0.3 M Na2SO4), was evaluated. Anopen circuit voltage(OCV) of 12.3 V, amaximum power densityof 0.22 W/m2MP (MP: membrane pair) and internal area resistance of 43.2 Ωcm2/cell were recorded by using 0.01 M/0.3 M Na2SO4solutions at 35 °C. The APWEL stack (6 cells, active area: 5 × 5 cm2), equipped with Ni foamelectrodesand heterogeneous anion-selective membranes, was tested with varying concentrations of liquid electrolyte (0.85–2.5 M KOH) and varying temperatures (28–48 °C). The APWEL stack attained a maximumcurrent densityof 110 mA/m2at 1.85 V/cell (i.e. 11 V per stack), 2.5 M KOH and 48 °C. Under these conditions, theintegrated systemexhibited a maximum hydrogen production rate of 50 cm3/h·cm2. This study opens up a new perspective on renewable hydrogen production fuelled by non-intermittent SGP from SO42--richindustrial effluents.

Divalent cations in feedwater can cause significant decreases in efficiencies for membrane processes, such as reverse electrodialysis (RED). In RED, power is harvested from the mixing of river and seawater, and the obtainable voltage is reduced and the resistance is increased if divalent cations are present. The power density of the RED process can be improved by removing divalent cations from the fresh water. Here, we study divalent cation removal from fresh water using seawater as draw solution in a Donnan dialysis (DD) process. In this way, a membrane system with neither chemicals nor electrodes but only natural salinity gradients can be used to exchange divalent cations. For DD, the permselectivity of the cation exchange membrane is found to be crucial as it determines the ability to block salt leakage (also referred to as co-ion transport). Operating DD using a membrane stack achieved a 76% reduction in the divalent cation content in natural fresh water with residence times of just a few seconds. DD pretreated fresh water was then used in a RED process, which showed improved gross and net power densities of 9.0 and 6.3%, respectively. This improvement is caused by a lower fresh water resistance (at similar open circuit voltages), due to exchange of divalent for monovalent cations., This paper described a sustainable method of divalent cation exchange that avoids chemical and power usage to enhance renewable energy harvesting from natural salinity gradients.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a sustainable method to harvest energy using the salinity gradient between fresh and seawater. RED technology is developing but efficiencies are still limited when using natural feed water sources. One significant constraint is induced by the presence of multivalent ions in sea and river water (i.e. Mg2+, Ca2+, SO4 2-). Uphill transport and an increase in membrane resistance in the presence of magnesium ions significantly reduce the power density output obtainable. The choice of cation exchange membrane determines the magnesium transport and as such the power density. Here we investigate four cation exchange membrane types and relate their properties to the stack performance using three different magnesium concentrations on either river and/or seawater side: 1) a highly cross-linked styrene-divinyl benzene monovalent selective cation exchange membrane (Neosepta CMS); 2) a monovalent selective cation exchange membrane that contains a thin polyethyleneimine (PEI) anion exchange layer (Selemion CSO); 3) a multivalent ion (e.g. magnesium) permeable cation exchange membrane with an engineered molecularly open structure facilitating the transport of multivalent ions as recently developed (T1 Fujifilm); 4) a standard cation exchange membrane (Type I Fujifilm (reference)). The first two membranes both retain magnesium ions, while the other two membranes are considered permeable for magnesium ions. The results show that power density strongly depends on the composition of both river and seawater. Power density decreases in the presence of magnesium, an effect being strongest with magnesium at both river and seawater side, followed by the river water side and the seawater side. The negative effect of multivalent ion transport against the concentration gradient, so called uphill transport, in RED can be significantly minimized when monovalent selective membranes such as the highly cross-linked Neosepta CMS membrane or the AEM coated Selemion CSO membrane are used. However, the use of such membranes directly results in a strong increase in membrane resistance due to the lower ion mobility of magnesium ions inside these membranes. As a consequence, power densities in RED are not improved. Especially at high magnesium concentrations, this effect is very strong at higher concentrations, the membranes are no longer able to retain magnesium ions effectively. More beneficial is the application of multivalent permeable membranes with a more ‘open’ structure that allow the free movement of both sodium and magnesium ions through the membrane. Maybe somewhat counter intuitively, such membranes (especially the Fujifilm multivalent permeable T1 membrane) have low resistance values combined with reasonable OCV values leading to high power densities under almost all magnesium concentrations, especially at long term applications. Highest power densities well exceeding 0.3 W/m2 are still obtained when only sodium is present. However, when magnesium ions are present power densities in the order of 0.2–0.25 W/m2 can still be obtained for these membranes.

Growing requirements of freshwater and unsustainable nature of fossil fuels are driving the interest in using renewable energy for desalination applications. Due to their less energy-intensive nature and small footprint, membrane-based desalination operations are gaining significant interest in this regard. Substantial efforts have been observed in integrating traditional renewable and relatively green sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and nuclear) with membrane-based desalination operations, mainly reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED). Due to recent developments and progresses in membrane technology, interesting membrane operations including membrane distillation (MD), pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) have emerged. These operations are capable of generating clean and sustainable electricity from various waste streams including brine and impaired water which otherwise are considered environmental liabilities. PRO and RED require mixing of a high salinity solution (such as seawater or brine and wastewater, respectively) with a low salinity solution to generate electricity. MD has shown the potential to generate freshwater and electricity as standalone process. Integration of MD with PRO or RED enhances the performance of these processes and provides a clean and sustainable route to produce freshwater and energy. The current study reviews the recent progresses and developments in applying renewable energy sources in membrane-based desalination with special attention on emerging membrane operations with proven capability to generate energy from wastewater streams.

The impact of fouling on the performance of Reverse Electrodialysis operated with highly concentrated brine is a poorly investigated area. In this work, the fouling propensity and stability of Ion Exchange Membranes (IEMs), developed by Fujifilm Manufacturing Europe BV (The Netherlands), is investigated under the condition of seawater and brine. The fouling propensity of the IEMs was depicted by the determination of the Gibbs energy barrier of based-on the Classical Nucleation along with the Theoretical modeling of heterogeneous nucleation as a function of electrochemical (contact angle, permittivity, charge density) and morphological (roughness) membrane properties validated by CaCO3 precipitation. Results indicate that Cation Exchange Membranes (CEM) are more susceptible to the scaling due to the reduced energy barrier of heterogeneous nucleation. FTIR-ATR analysis on six months-aged membranes samples indicated a partial modification in the chemical structure of Anion Exchange Membranes (AEM) induced by the organic fouling associated with humic substances. The tensile tests demonstrated substantial mechanical stability of IEMs. Lab-scale RED tests operated with artificial brine over 30 days showed a significant increase in pressure drop through feed channels due to significant colloidal fouling along with a 23% reduction of maximum gross power density with consequent decrease of net power density.

When natural feed waters are used in the operation of a reverse electrodialysis (RED) stack, severe fouling on the ion exchange membranes and spacers occurs. Fouling of the RED stack has a strong influence on the gross power density output; which can decrease up to 50%. Moreover, an increase in the pressure loss occurs between the feed water inlet and outlet, increasing the pumping energy and thus decreasing the net power density that can be obtained. In this work, we extensively investigated the use of CO2 saturated water as two-phase flow cleaning for fouling mitigation in RED using natural feed waters. Experiments were performed in the REDstack research facility located at the Afsluitdijk (the Netherlands) using natural feed waters for a period of 60 days. Two different gas combinations were experimentally investigated, water/air sparging and water/CO2 (saturated) injection. Air is an inert gas mixture and induces air sparging in the stack. In the case of CO2, nucleation, i.e. the spontaneous formation of bubbles, occurs at the spacer filaments due to depressurization of CO2 saturated water, inducing cleaning. Results showed that stacks equipped with CO2 saturated water can produce an average net power density of 0.18 W/m2 under real fouling conditions with minimal pre-treatment and at a low outside temperature of only 8 °C, whereas the stacks equipped with air sparging could only produce an average net power density of 0.04 W/m2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements showed that the stacks equipped with air sparging increased in stack resistance due to the presence of stagnant bubbles remaining in the stack after every air injection. Furthermore, the introduction of CO2 gas in the feed water introduces a pH decrease in the system (carbonated solution) adding an additional cleaning effect in the system, thus avoiding the use of environmentally unwanted cleaning chemicals.

Spacer-less RED stacks using membranes with integrated spacer profiles have been investigated during the last years to eliminate the spacer shadow effect. The presence of spacers partially blocks the membrane surface and creates a tortuous and thus longer path for ions in the channel, meaning higher ohmic resistance. Consequently, power outputs are reduced. Profiled membranes may solve this problem as they provide flow channels for the feed streams, while the relief formed on their surfaces keeps the membranes separated. Although the geometry and arrangement of so far used profiles led to lower ohmic resistance, it did not grant an efficient fluid mixing. Recently, so-called chevron profiles, with enhanced mixing, were proposed based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In the present study, the performance of such chevron-profiled membranes, prepared by thermal pressing, was experimentally validated in a reverse electrodialysis (RED) stack. According to the obtained experimental values of non-ohmic resistance and total pressure drop across the RED stack, the chevron-profiled membranes assure efficient fluid mixing at comparatively low hydraulic losses. The net power density obtained with chevron-profiled membranes was the highest obtained for the present stack design. It outperformed the alternative RED stack configurations investigated in this study, such as channels with optimized spacers and channels formed by pillar-profiled membranes. To allow for an even more straightforward and efficient RED stack assembling with chevron-profiled membranes, recommendations for a further simplified design, consisting of diagonal ridges that are assembled perpendicularly, are provided.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a blue energy technology for clean and sustainable electricity harvesting from the mixing entropy of salinity gradients. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to improving the performance of RED units by developing new ion-exchange membranes and by reducing the detrimental phenomena affecting the process. Among these sources of “irreversibility”, the shortcut currents (or parasitic currents) flowing through alternative pathways may affect the process efficiency. Although such phenomena occur in several electrochemical processes (e.g. fuel cells, bipolar plate cells and vanadium redox flow batteries), they have received a poor attention in RED units. In this work, a process simulator with distributed parameters was developed and experimentally validated to characterize the shortcut currents and to assess their impact in RED stack performance under different designs and operating conditions. Results showed that shortcut currents can play a crucial role in stacks with a large number of cell pairs when the electrical resistance of the parasitic pathways is relatively low, e.g. configurations with concentrated brines, high resistance membranes, short channels or large manifolds. Future designs of efficient industrial-scale units cannot ignore these aspects. Finally, the model can be easily adapted for the simulation of electrodialysis and other electromembrane processes.

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) have consolidated applications in energy conversion and storage systems, like fuel cells and battery separators. Moreover, in the perspective to address the global need for non-carbon-based and renewable energies, salinity-gradient power (SGP) harvesting by reverse electrodialysis (RED) is attracting significant interest in recent years. In particular, brine solutions produced in desalination plants can be used as concentrated streams in a SGP-RED stack, providing a smart solution to the problem of brine disposal. Although Nafion is probably the most prominent commercial cation exchange membrane for electrochemical applications, no study has investigated yet its potential in RED. In this work, Nafion 117 and Nafion 115 membranes were tested for NaCl and NaCl + MgCl2 solutions, in order to measure the gross power density extracted under high salinity gradient and to evaluate the effect of Mg2+ (the most abundant divalent cation in natural feeds) on the efficiency in energy conversion. Moreover, performance of commercial CMX (Neosepta) and Fuji-CEM 80050 (Fujifilm) cation exchange membranes, already widely applied for RED applications, were used as a benchmark for Nafion membranes. In addition, complementary characterization (i.e., electrochemical impedance and membrane potential test) was carried out on the membranes with the aim to evaluate the predominance of electrochemical properties in different aqueous solutions. In all tests, Nafion 117 exhibited superior performance when 0.5/4.0 M NaCl fed through 500 &micro, m-thick compartments at a linear velocity 1.5 cm&middot, s&minus, 1. However, the gross power density of 1.38 W&middot, m&minus, 2 detected in the case of pure NaCl solutions decreased to 1.08 W&middot, 2 in the presence of magnesium chloride. In particular, the presence of magnesium resulted in a drastic effect on the electrochemical properties of Fuji-CEM-80050, while the impact on other membranes investigated was less severe.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) represents one of the most promising membrane-based technologies for clean and renewable energy production from mixing water solutions. However, the presence of multivalent ions in natural water drastically reduces system performance, in particular, the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and the output power. This effect is largely described by the “uphill transport” phenomenon, in which multivalent ions are transported against the concentration gradient. In this work, recent advances in the investigation of the impact of multivalent ions on power generation by RED are systematically reviewed along with possible strategies to overcome this challenge. In particular, the use of monovalent ion-selective membranes represents a promising alternative to reduce the negative impact of multivalent ions given the availability of low-cost materials and an easy route of membrane synthesis. A thorough assessment of the materials and methodologies used to prepare monovalent selective ion exchange membranes (both cation and anion exchange membranes) for applications in (reverse) electrodialysis is performed. Moreover, transport mechanisms under conditions of extreme salinity gradient are analyzed and compared for a better understanding of the design criteria. The ultimate goal of the present work is to propose a prospective research direction on the development of new membrane materials for effective implementation of RED under natural feed conditions.

The main objective of this study is to explore the influence of ion composition on the trans-membrane potential across the ion exchange membrane (IEM), and thus offers a reference for the deep insight of &ldquo, reverse electrodialysis heat engine&rdquo, running in the composite systems. In comparison to the natural system (river water | seawater), the performance of the reverse electrodialysis (RED) stack was examined using NaHCO3, Na2CO3, and NH4Cl as the supporting electrolyte in the corresponding compartment. The effect of flow rates and the concentration ratio in the high salt concentration compartment (HCC)/low salt concentration compartment (LCC) on energy generation was investigated in terms of the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and power density per membrane area. It was found that the new system (0.49 M NaCl + 0.01 M NaHCO3|0.01 M NaHCO3) output a relatively stable power density (0.174 W&middot, m&minus, 2), with the open-circuit voltage 2.95 V under the low flow rate of 0.22 cm/s. Meanwhile, the simulated natural system (0.5 M NaCl|0.01 M NaCl) output the power density 0.168 W&middot, 2, with the open-circuit voltage 2.86 V under the low flow rate of 0.22 cm/s. The findings in this work further confirm the excellent potential of RED for the recovery of salinity gradient energy (SGP) that is reserved in artificially-induced systems (wastewaters).

Although desalination market is today dominated by Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), important technological issues remain unaddressed, specifically: relatively low water recovery factor (around 50%) and consequent huge amount of brine discharged, and energy consumption (3–5 kWh/m3) still far from the minimum thermodynamic value (∼1 kWh/m3). Herein, the energy performance of an innovative systems combining SWRO, Membrane Distillation (MD) and Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) for simultaneous production of water and energy is investigated. The valorization of hypersaline waste brine by Salinity Gradient Power production via RED and the achievement of high recovery factors (since MD is not limited by osmotic phenomena) represent a step forward to the practical implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge and low-energy desalination. The analysis is supported by lab-scale experimental tests carried out on MD and RED over a broad set of operational conditions. Among the different case studies investigated, exergetic efficiency reached 49% for the best scenario, i.e. MD feed temperature of 60 °C, MD brine concentration of 5 M NaCl, RED power density of 2.2 W/m2MP (MP: membrane pair). Compared to the benchmark flowsheet (only SWRO), up to 23% reduction in electrical energy consumption and 16.6% decrease in specific energy consumption were achieved when including a RED unit. The analysis also indicates that optimization of thermal energy input at the MD stage is critical, although it can potentially be fulfilled by low-grade waste heat or solar-thermal renewable sources. Overall, the proposed integrated system is coherent with the emergent paradigm of Circular Economy and the logic of Process Intensification.

Topical and transdermal drug delivery has great potential in non-invasive and non-oral administration of poorly bioavailable therapeutic agents. However, due to the barrier function of the stratum corneum, the drugs that can be clinically feasible candidates for topical and transdermal delivery have been limited to small-sized lipophilic molecules. Previously, we fabricated a novel iontophoretic system using reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology (RED system). However, no study has demonstrated its utility in topical and/or transdermal delivery of poorly permeable therapeutic agents. In this study, we report the topical delivery of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)–hyaluronic acid (FITC–HA) and vitamin C and the transdermal delivery of lopinavir using our newly developed RED system in the in vitro hairless mouse skin and in vivo Sprague–Dawley rat models. The RED system significantly enhanced the efficiency of topical HA and vitamin C and transdermal lopinavir delivery. Moreover, the efficiency and safety of transdermal delivery using the RED system were comparable with those of a commercial ketoprofen patch formulation. Thus, the RED system can be a potential topical and transdermal delivery system for various poorly bioavailable pharmaceuticals including HA, vitamin C, and lopinavir.

Reverse Electrodialysis is today recognized as one of the most promising technology to harvest Salinity Gradient Power (SGP-RE). However, the effectiveness of SGP-RE in real practice is still not clearly defined due to the lack of specific studies in literature, being in large part limited to investigations on pure NaCl solutions. In this work we experimentally investigated the effect of Mg2+, the most abundant cation in natural water after Na+, on SGP-RE performance by power measurements on a lab-scale stack prototype. Maximum power density ranged from 1.06 W/m(Mp)(2) (MP: membrane pair) - generated when feeding SGP-RE prototype with 0.5 molal//4 molal NaCl, to 0.06 W/m(Mp)(2) - measured when using 0.5 molal//4 molal MgCl2 solutions. Likewise, open circuit voltage decreased from 1.70 to 0.72 V. Evidence of uphill transport in the range of 0-30% MgCl2 was confirmed by Ion Chromatography analysis carried out on inlet and outlet streams of SGP-RE stack. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy analysis revealed that cation exchange membrane resistance was critically affected by Mg2+ concentration: membrane resistance, from a value of 2.41 Omega cm(2) in pure NaCl solution, increased tenfold in pure MgCl2 solution. Unlike traditional fossil fuel plants, the wind and the sun provide power only when the renewable resource is available. To accommodate large scale use of renewable energy sources for efficient power production and utilization, energy storage systems are necessary. Here, we introduce a scalable energy storage system which operates by performing cycles during which energy generated from renewable resource is first used to produce highly concentrated brine and diluate, followed up mixing these two solutions in order to generate power. In this work, we present theoretical results of the attainable energy density as function of salt type and concentration. A linearized Nernst-Planck model is used to describe water, salt and charge transport. We validate our model with experiments over wide range of sodium chloride concentrations (0.025–3 m) and current densities (−49 to +33 A m −2 ). We find that depending on current density, charge and discharge steps have significantly different thermodynamic efficiency. In addition, we show that at optimal current densities, mechanisms of energy dissipation change with salt concentration. We find the highest thermodynamic efficiency at low concentrate concentrations. When using salt concentrations above 1 m, water and co-ion transport contribute to high energy dissipation due to irreversible mixing.

Positively charged (cetylpyridinium chloride), negatively charged (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and non-charged (polyethylene glycol) surfactants are used as potential foulant in reverse electrodialysis systems supplying seawater and river freshwater. Fouling tendency of the foulants to ion-exchange membranes is investigated in terms of the adsorption by electromigration, electrostatic attraction, and macromolecule interaction in reverse electrodialysis systems. According to theoretical prediction of fouling tendency, charged foulants in seawater streams could foul ion-exchange membranes significantly. However, the worst fouling behavior is observed when the charged foulants are present in river streams. As a result of zeta potential measurement, it is found that the Debye length of the charged foulants decreases due to the higher ionic strength of seawater streams and causes to lower net electrostatic effect. It finally results in less fouling tendency in reverse electrodialysis.

Profiled membranes (also known as corrugated membranes, micro-structured membranes, patterned membranes, membranes with designed topography or notched membranes) are gaining increasing academic and industrial attention and recognition as a viable alternative to flat membranes. So far, profiled ion exchange membranes have shown to significantly improve the performance of reverse electrodialysis (RED), and particularly, electrodialysis (ED) by eliminating the spacer shadow effect and by inducing hydrodynamic changes, leading to ion transport rate enhancement. The beneficial effects of profiled ion exchange membranes are strongly dependent on the shape of their profiles (corrugations/patterns) as well as on the flow rate and salts’ concentration in the feed streams. The enormous degree of freedom to create new profile geometries offers an exciting opportunity to improve even more their performance. Additionally, the advent of new manufacturing methods in the membrane field, such as 3D printing, is anticipated to allow a faster and an easier way to create profiled membranes with different and complex geometries.

The coupling of Reverse Electrodialysis with Membrane Distillation is a promising option for the conversion of waste heat into electricity. This study evaluates the performances of the integrated system under different operating conditions, employing validated model and correlations. This work provides a detailed description of the behaviour of a real RED-MD heat engine and indicates the set of inlet concentrations, velocities and equipment size which returns the highest cycle exergy efficiency. These operating conditions were selected for the pilot plant developed within the EU-funded project RED Heat to Power. For the first time, a perspective analysis was also included, considering highly performing RED membranes and future MD module. Relevant results indicate that technological improvements may lead to interesting system performance enhancement, up to an exergy efficiency of 16.5%, which is considerably higher than the values reported in literature so far.

When harvesting salinity gradient energy via reverse electrodialysis (RED), stack performance is monitored using DC characterizations, which does not provide information about the nature and mechanisms underlying fouling inside the stack. In order to assess the potential of natural salinity gradients as renewable energy source, progress in the fields of fouling monitoring and controlling is vital. To improve fouling and cleaning monitoring, experiments with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) were carried out while at the same time the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was measured at the RED stack level. EIS showed how SDBS affected the ohmic resistance of the stack, the non-ohmic resistance of the AEM and the non-ohmic resistance of the CEM on different time scales. Such detailed investigation into the effect of SDBS on different stack elements offered by EIS is not possible with traditional DC characterization. The results presented in this work illustrate the potential of EIS at the stack level for fouling monitoring. The knowledge presented shows the possibility to include EIS in up-scaled natural salinity gradient RED applications for fouling monitoring purposes.

This work presents an integrated hydrogen production system using reverse electrodialysis (RED) and waste heat, termed Heat to H 2 . The driving potential in RED is a concentration difference over alternating anion and cation exchange membranes, where the electrode potential can be used directly for water splitting at the RED electrodes. Low-grade waste heat is used to restore the concentration difference in RED. In this study we investigate two approaches: one water removal process by evaporation and one salt removal process. Salt is precipitated in the thermally driven salt removal, thus introducing the need for a substantial change in solubility with temperature, which KNO 3 fulfils. Experimental data of ion conductivity of K + and no in ion-exchange membranes is obtained. The ion conductivity of KNO 3 in the membranes was compared to NaCl and found to be equal in cation exchange membranes, but significantly lower in anion exchange membranes. The membrane resistance constitutes 98% of the total ohmic resistance using concentrations relevant for the precipitation process, while for the evaporation process, the membrane resistance constitutes over 70% of the total ohmic resistance at 40 ∘ . The modelled hydrogen production per cross-section area from RED using concentrations relevant for the precipitation process is 0.014 &plusmn, 0.009 m 3 h n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 (1.1 &plusmn, 0.7 g h n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 ) at 40 ∘ , while with concentrations relevant for evaporation, the hydrogen production per cross-section area was 0.034 &plusmn, 0.016 m 3 h n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 (2.6 &plusmn, 1.3 g h n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 ). The modelled energy needed per cubic meter of hydrogen produced is 55 &plusmn, 22 kWh (700 &plusmn, 300 kWh kg n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 ) for the evaporation process and 8.22 &plusmn, 0.05 kWh (104.8 &plusmn, 0.6 kWh kg n a m e d - c o n t e n t c o l o r t y p e r g b c o n t e n t - t y p e b l a c k - 1 ) for the precipitation process. In the membrane processes, a trans-membrane pressure (TMP) may arise due to design features or operating conditions. In most applications, stacks for electrodialysis (ED) or reverse electrodialysis (RED) operate at low TMP (&lt, 0.1 bar), however, large stacks with non-parallel flow patterns and/or asymmetric configurations can exhibit higher TMP values, causing membrane deformations and changes in fluid dynamics and transport phenomena. In this work, integrated mechanical and fluid dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the TMP effects on deformation, flow and mass transfer for a profiled membrane-fluid channel system with geometrical and mechanical features and fluid velocities representative of ED/RED conditions. First, a conservatively high value of TMP was assumed, and mechanical simulations were conducted to identify the geometry with the largest pitch to height ratio still able to bear this load without exhibiting a contact between opposite membranes. The selected geometry was then investigated under expansion and compression conditions in a TMP range encompassing most practical applications. Finally, friction and mass transfer coefficients in the deformed channel were predicted by computational fluid dynamics. Significant effects of membrane deformation were observed: friction and mass transfer coefficients increased in the compressed channel, while they decreased (though to a lesser extent) in the expanded channel.

Salinity Gradient Power - Reverse Electrodialysis (SGP-RED) is a promising membrane-based technology to harvest the energy of mixing from solutions of different ionic concentration. Unfortunately, currently available commercial ion exchange membranes – being not specifically designed for RED – are far from satisfying the requirements of this operation, especially when operated with hyper-concentrated brines. In this work, novel sulfonated polyethersulfone (sPES) cation exchange membranes (CEM) were prepared by phase inversion method and tested under high salinity gradients. Use of 5 M NaCl electrolyte for immersion precipitation coagulation bath facilitated the self-standing membrane formation as a result of the electrostatic interaction between the fixed charged groups and electrolyte solution. Microscopy results revealed that dense or asymmetric membranes with non-connected pores were formed by solvent evaporation or immersion precipitation, respectively. The membranes were characterized for ion exchange capacity, water uptake, charge density and thickness, and further studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The obtained properties of the newly developed membranes were subsequently compared to those of commercial CMX (Neosepta, Japan) and Fuji-CEM-Type 1 (Fujifilm, The Netherlands) membranes. The asymmetric membranes resulted in a very low resistance especially for high ionic gradients but relatively low permselectivity, while dense membranes still had a low resistance compared to commercial membranes and exhibited high permselectivity. Interestingly, in terms of power density, lab-made membranes outperformed the commercial benchmarks when tested for RED applications with brackish water (0.1 M NaCl)/hypersaline brine (4 M NaCl) feeds; power density of CMX and Fuji-CEM-Type 1 were 3.23 and 3.77 W/m2, respectively, while power density of asymmetric and dense sPES membranes were 3.64 and 3.92 W/m2, respectively.

A comprehensive scientometric approach was adopted to study the research on ion exchange membranes. The statistical analysis was conducted based on 21 123 publications which were related to the topic of ion exchange membranes. Specifically, from 2001 to 2016, over 18 000 articles were published on ion exchange membranes, indicating researchers' great interest in this topic. Especially, compared to 2001, the number of articles published in 2016 increased approximately six-fold. This trend continued in 2017 since over 2000 articles were published in the year of 2017. Also, these articles were spread across over 1000 different journals, near 100 countries/regions and over 5000 research institutes, revealing the importance of ion exchange membrane as well as the broad research interest in this field. Besides, the properties and applications of ion exchange membranes were also discussed statistically. Furthermore, keywords analysis indicated that fuel cell and proton exchange membrane had the highest cooccurrence frequency. Finally, research areas analysis revealed that ion exchange membranes had a close relation with chemistry, energy and materials.

Salinity gradient power (SGP) between fresh river water and sea water is a form of renewable energy with huge potential but not well explored. This paper presents a feasibility study on energy harvesting of SGP based on: 1) the use of reverse electrodialysis (RED) stack, and 2) the combined use of harmonics-boosted resonant inverter and multistage diode-capacitor step-up converter. The properties of an RED stack have been characterized into steady-state ac and dc equivalent circuit models for power converter design for the first time. The gains of the resonant inverter and diode-capacitor step-up converter are also optimized for maximizing the energy efficiency. An RED stack prototype comprising multiple alternating anion and cation exchange membranes with an area of 0.01 m $^{\text 2}$ each has been constructed. The dc output voltage of 2–3 V from the RED stack has been stepped up to be over 155 V. This study has confirmed that energy can be harvested with a membrane power density of at least 1.4 W/m2, a power converter's efficiency exceeding 85%, and a voltage gain of 67.3 times.

The effectiveness ofSalinity Gradient Power-Reverse Electrodialysis(SGP-RE) in real practice is still not clearly defined due to the lack of specific studies in literature, being investigations in large part limited to pure NaCl solutions or aqueous mixtures of two salts. In this work, we experimentally assessed the impact of natural feed streams (collected from Licetto river and Tyrrenian sea in Amantea - Italy) in terms of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and power density (Pd) measured on a lab-scale SGP-RE stack prototype; results have been compared to those obtained when using NaCl solutions having equivalentionic strength. Highest OCV (3.68 V and 4.09 V) and Pdvalues (0.46 and 1.41 W∙m−2) were observed at temperature of 60 °C for real and synthetic feeds, respectively. The extent of electrical resistances (ion exchange membrane/electrical double layer/diffusion boundary layer) was elucidated byelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS); in particular, a critical effect of real solution oncation exchange membrane(CEM) resistance was detected. Additionally, ioniccharacterizationof process effluents revealed the occurrence of uphill transport of multivalent ions Mg2+, Ca2+and SO42−.

Concentration polarization is one of the main challenges of membrane-based processes such as power generation by reverse electrodialysis. Spacers in the compartments can enhance mass transfer by reducing concentration polarization. Active spacers increase the available membrane surface area, thus avoiding the shadow effect introduced by inactive spacers. Optimizing the spacer-filled channels is crucial for improving mass transfer while maintaining reasonable pressure losses. The main objective of this work was to develop a numerical model based upon the Navier&ndash, Stokes and Nernst&ndash, Planck equations in OpenFOAM, for detailed investigation of mass transfer efficiency and pressure drop. The model is utilized in different spacer-filled geometries for varying Reynolds numbers, spacer conductivity and fluid temperature. Triangular corrugations are found to be the optimum geometry, particularly at low flow velocities. Cylindrical corrugations are better at high flow velocities due to lower pressure drop. Enhanced mass transfer and lower pressure drop by elevating temperature is demonstrated.

A novel process is presented to generate electricity from low-grade heat by combining a Reverse Electrodialysis membrane with an Adsorption desalinator in a closed-loop system. A Reverse Electrodialysis membrane generates electricity by controlled mixing of two salt solutions of different concentrations. An Adsorption desalinator restores the initial salt gradient by utilising low-grade heat for the separation. In this study the process is designed from optimising the salt and material selection to the development of the real system application. Energy and exergy efficiencies of the proposed system show the potential of this novel renewable energy technology. The efficiencies of 227 salts with a range of different valences and 10 adsorption materials have been investigated over a large number of system parameters. The results show that the optimised system can achieve an exergy efficiency of up to 30%. Moreover, high salt concentrations do not significantly increase the specific energy consumption of the Adsorption desalinator, which allows operating the Reverse Electrodialysis membrane at the optimal salt concentrations.

Salinity gradient energy is currently attracting growing attention among the scientific community as a renewable energy source. In particular, Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) is emerging as one of the most promising membrane-based technologies for renewable energy generation by mixing two solutions of different salinity. This work presents a critical review of the most significant achievements in RED, focusing on membrane development,stack design, fluid dynamics, process optimization, fouling and potential applications. Although RED technology is mainly investigated for energy generation from river water/seawater, the opportunities for the use of concentrated brine are considered as well, driven by benefits in terms of higher power density and mitigation of adverse environmental effects related to brine disposal. Interesting extensions of the applicability of RED for sustainable production of water and hydrogen when complemented by reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, bio-electrochemical systems and water electrolysis technologies are also discussed, along with the possibility to use it as an energy storage device. The main hurdles to market implementation, predominantly related to unavailability of high performance, stable and low-cost membrane materials, are outlined. A techno-economic analysis based on the available literature data is also performed and critical research directions to facilitate commercialization of RED are identified.

Reverse electrodialysis in closed loop configurations is a promising membrane technology in the energy conversion and storage fields. One of the main advantages of closed-loop reverse electrodialysis is the possibility of using a wide range of operating concentrations, flow rates and different salts for generating the salinity gradient. In this work, an original exergy analysis of the reverse electrodialysis process was carried out in order to investigate reverse electrodialysis performance in terms of energetic and exergetic efficiency parameters in a wide range of operating conditions. A mono-dimensional model of the reverse electrodialysis process was developed, in which all sources of irreversibility are considered, such as non-ideal membranes permselectivity, ohmic losses and uncontrolled mixing phenomena (salt and water diffusive flux across membranes). For each of them, the influence on the exergy efficiency is quantified and compared. Results also indicate how exergetic and energetic performance are largely dependent on solutions concentration: when high salinity gradient differences are used within the unit, membrane water permeability heavily affects process performance, thus reducing exergy efficiency, though a larger power output can be normally achieved. The more performing flow arrangement for the stack has been found to be the counter-current, though significant differences are observed only for long channels. Finally, performance is improved when short residence time within the stack is attained for the low-concentration solution.

Resumen Se presenta y resuelve un modelo para diseño de pilas de Electrodiálisis inversa. Se propuso una nueva función de optimización para RED, que tienen en cuenta el consumo de agua de río, la densidad de potencia neta y la eficiencia termodinámica del proceso. Los parámetros de tiempos de residencia y espesor de compartimientos fueron optimizados correctamente usando la nueva función propuesta. Los resultados sugieren pequeños tiempos de residencia, compartimientos de espesores delgados, poca área transversal y relaciones bajas de Longitud/ Ancho del compartimiento para máxima generación de energía. Abstract A model for design of Reverse Electrodialysis stacks for energy generation is presented and solved. A new optimization function is proposed for RED, which accounts for river water consume, net power density and thermodynamic efficiency of the process. The parameters of residence time and thickness of the compartments are successfully optimized using the new proposed function. Results suggest small residence time, compartments thickness, and transversal area and Long/Width ratio for maximum energy generation.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology generates energy from the salinity gradient by contacting waters with different salinity. Herein, we develop the disposable skin patch using this eco-friendly energy. The current density, which can be controlled easily without special circuit, is enough to iontophoretic drug delivery. In vitro study, this iontophoretic system enhanced the transdermal delivery of peptide, which is difficult to penetrate the skin barrier by simple diffusion. We design the disposable iontophoretic skin patch using RED system and suggest this patch can be apply on new cosmetic patch or disposable drug patch.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the most promising membrane-based processes for renewable energy generation from mixing two solutions of different salinity. However, the presence of Mg2+ in natural water has been shown to drastically reduce open circuit voltage (OCV) and output power of RED. To alleviate this challenge, commercial cation exchange membranes (CEM) supplied by Fujifilm Manufacturing Europe B.V. (The Netherlands) were chemically modified by polypyrrole (PPy)/chitosan (CS) composites under controlled Pyrrole (Py) concentration (0.025–1 M) and polymerization time (0–8 h). The modified membranes were physically characterized by FTIR, SEM and EDX along with the determination of key electrochemical properties like ion exchange capacity, ionic conductivity, monovalent selectivity and swelling degree. The monovalent selectivity (Na+ vs Mg2+) of the modified membranes, evaluated based on flux of ions by diffusion dialysis, indicated up to 3-fold improvement compared to pristine membranes inline with the enhanced OCV (up to 20%) during RED test in multi-ion solution. This was obtained without significant change in membrane and interface resistances as depicted by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified membranes displayed power densities in the range of 0.6–1.5 W/m2MP (MP: membrane pair) with more than 42% improvement compared to pristine membranes during RED test with multi-ion solutions. Although there is a gap for further improvement, these findings highlight a promising use of conducting polymers to design a highly selective and conductive membrane for RED.

Reverse electrodialysis (RE) is a promising technology for electric power generation from controlled mixing of two differently concentrated salt solutions, where ion-exchange membranes are adopted for the generation of ionic currents within the system. Channel geometry strongly influences fluid flow and thus crucial phenomena such as pressure drop and concentration polarization. Profiled membranes are an alternative to the more commonly adopted net spacers and offer a number of advantages: avoiding the use of non-conductive and relatively expensive materials, reducing hydraulic losses and increasing the active membrane area. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations were performed to predict the fluid flow and mass transfer behaviour in channels with profiled membranes for RE applications. In particular, channels equipped with pillars were simulated. The influence of channel geometry on fluid flow and concentration polarization was assessed by means of a parametric analysis for different profile geometries. The unit cell approach along with periodic boundary conditions was adopted to simulate fully developed boundary conditions. Transport equations, valid also for concentrated solutions, were obtained from the rigorous Stefan–Maxwell equation along with the assumptions of binary electrolyte and local electroneutrality. Simulation results show that, in the geometries investigated here, the pumping power consumption is much lower than in a conventional net spacer and very close to that of the empty channel, while calm zones are generated by the profiles, which may accentuate polarization phenomena.
